- 2:47Wright, start as a famous inspector Peter Black of Scotland Yard, we bring
- 2:52you to Night's story Pursuit on the night Ferry. You that, mister,
- 3:35my actually past man, I'm sure we'll do that one, but yeah,
- 3:42I'm shy. It's on three. Yeah, said try what lace? She
- 3:49knew you like buisine, s carb, like vis Oh my boy, it's
- 3:53not that did a vita near goos? You didn't you have this? I
- 3:55give us the mother because it all, but you do much more? THO?
- 4:01What was that all about? Once a restaurant car? Is that all
- 4:06the expression? I thought it was something else? No, just a Frenchman
- 4:10unhappy with English trains and English cookie? No was she telling him all?
- 4:15No? Literally, she said, my Darling. It is that you will
- 4:18destroy your stomach with the goal from nervousness before the food enters revolting. What's
- 4:25the time, Black, ten o'clock. I wouldn't mind avite to eat myself.
- 4:29Oh, you'll have to wait until Dover for that only forty minutes.
- 4:31Well, something's going to happen. I hope it's before the channel. Hi,
- 4:35you get sea sick Hudson violently, don't talk about it. I want
- 4:41look hang on here, will you. I'm going to see how mup it's
- 4:43getting on. We had boarded the Night Ferry Express at nine o'clock Victoria station.
- 4:54There would be no halts until Dover, at which point the train would
- 4:57be run aboard the ferry and transported across the English Channel to Dunkat. From
- 5:00there it would continue through to Paris. Somewhere then between our present point and
- 5:05our final destination, we were expecting trouble. Scotland Yard had received word from
- 5:12an informer to the effect that the Knight Ferry was to be held up on
- 5:15its run at what time and exactly where was not known, and so our
- 5:18Railway Police Inspector George Hobson, Marfa and I, as well as ten other
- 5:23men were making the journey in the hope of intercepting any attack. Allow,
- 5:35sir, no, everything quiet, nothing, I've been doing our fears,
- 5:39sir right, well, unless they're planning to stop the train when we get
- 5:43over to France. I don't think that that look. I'm well, I'll
- 5:47be dunet dummy. There a light on the head, something on the rails.
- 5:53I think all right. You jumped for at the second she stops pop
- 5:56it and had your gun ready. Your own doctor can tell you that blood
- 6:13deficient in iron cannot do the job it must do if you are to act
- 6:16and feel your best. Blood deficient in iron causes that youthful blush of color
- 6:21to fade from your cheeks. It puts an added burden on your heart,
- 6:26makes it work harder to keep you going, and it robs your body of
- 6:30energy and vigor. So if your blood is deficient in iron, if it's
- 6:33making you pale, tired, and blistless, use an iron tomic ironized yeast
- 6:39daily. Regular use of ironized yeast tablets provides you with iron in such abundance
- 6:44that your faded, anemic blood is transformed into a rich red bloodstream that restores
- 6:49the vital energy and vigor that once were yours. Pallor tiredness and blistlessness may
- 6:56be due to other causes. So to be sure of your condition, see
- 6:59your doctor. But if your blood is simply deficient and iron and if you
- 7:02water again your old time color and energy, try ironized yeaste tablets now available
- 7:09in a half month, one month and two month packages were as little as
- 7:13four cents a day. It was ten minutes past ten when the Night Ferry
- 7:27Express pulled to a halt somewhere between Maidstone and Ashford. The countryside which stretched
- 7:31away beyond the rails was lost in darkness. As pre arranged, our men
- 7:35took up their posts to protect the fourteen cars of the train. To additional
- 7:39armed guards attached to the British Railway Service were in the baggage car. I
- 7:43ran down the cinder bed toward the level crossing upon which a lorry was standing.
- 7:46Inspector Hobson joined me a moment later. Did anybody see anything? Oh
- 7:53not yet? The conductors over there looking. I don't like it. For
- 7:57where's the lorry driver? It doesn't look as if there is one funny there
- 8:01might be an accident, flat tire there lights on driver could have gone off
- 8:05to get help. Pretty coincidental. Yes, I know. Alright here,
- 8:09it's all clear, sir, if we can give that single shovel off the
- 8:13rail. No sign of anybody, Oh not a soul. Can't hear anything
- 8:18down the other way? False alarm, Thank goodness, just a moment.
- 8:22M up it. You got another man there with you? Yes, all
- 8:24right, you send him up here to give us a hand and keep your
- 8:28eyes open. We moved the lorry off the rails and over to the side
- 8:35of the road, and then we went over it thoroughly. Apart from a
- 8:39few empty fruit baskets, there was no indication the thing was any more than
- 8:43it appeared. A stall lorry with a flat tire, but it was flat
- 8:48because the bow had been removed. It remained to determine exactly why. We
- 8:54boarded the train again, and I made a careful check of each car,
- 8:56including the baggage. It was absolutely certain that no one had got on the
- 9:01train during the five minutes. Hal Muppett, Hobson and I went to the
- 9:05restaurant car to took it over. Well, they're going to be in for
- 9:09it, all right, I know what the devil reason would they have to
- 9:13stop the train, but not try anything. Ah, I guess like canned
- 9:16into dovers it. Well, it wouldn't be much point to that muppett.
- 9:18The station's too well lighted. Five minutes one where the other wouldn't have picked
- 9:22that. Look here, Hubson, you had any other big robberies in the
- 9:26past? Yeah? Oh, nine months ago the Golden Arrow. It happened
- 9:30on the French side though she was stopped about twenty miles out of Calais.
- 9:33Oh, they knocked out the baggage car men and made off with quite a
- 9:37bit. Will I get them? No, that's worrying me. It sounds
- 9:41as though it could be the same gang. You any idea who they are?
- 9:45French? English? Oh? Didn't leave a crew, didn't speak Five
- 9:48men, all masked. They were on and off in less than five minutes,
- 9:50and it might be the same luck. Then you think we got to
- 9:54put another man in the baggage car A good idea? Hello, Look the
- 9:58frenchman that doesn't like are cooking looking for somebody? Yes you are? I
- 10:03think you? Please? You please? Which of you has the pleasure of
- 10:07being inspect? My name is black? Then I speak English? So very
- 10:15bad? Is it not? The onontsi, I also beg a lot that
- 10:20you donate to me an explanation, an explanation. We have this stop made
- 10:24in this plan. If he for why it is not schedule, Oh,
- 10:28that's nothing to worry about that this the conductor also has told me. But
- 10:33you should sep I satisfied? How you say I am dangerous? I beg
- 10:41of it a point. My person is carried with all formality jewels of great
- 10:46wealth at just a moment. Perhaps it would be simple if you explained in
- 10:50French. If you don't want to protiction, maybe a presciuse you have funn
- 10:58Pari. If you pulled a Voler upon a voyage, sir, train supposit
- 11:03the un arrezo Doug raid at kirk if your part issue Kilo Pierre Paris,
- 11:13if you Hudson, you got the passenger list, handy, Yes, what's
- 11:20up? This gentleman says he's a jeweler. Evidently he's carrying quite a bit
- 11:22with him. Now he's worried. You think somebody might have got wind of
- 11:26it and wants a robin Well, what's his name? Renounce roberrig compact,
- 11:31Martin Mars Roudier, Robert Rudier and wife Martin Rudier, Rudi, Rudi,
- 11:46all right, Robert Rudier Jeweler twenty three rules is a frank Paris, looks
- 11:52all right? He has a permit to transport the stuff in and out of
- 11:54England. Have you neutrons or comparctly? Mom monsieur, you should told me
- 12:01right, Bob, I won't give me a pet miss the paragrams game?
- 12:07So well, A little round Frenchman waddled back, swaying a bit to the
- 12:16movement of the train, and disappeared at the end of the car. Twenty
- 12:20five minutes later we pulled into Over. To that moment there had been no
- 12:24alarm. The twelve sleeping cars were shunted on to the ferry, and at
- 12:28ten minutes to twelve we moved out from the dock and the channel crossing was
- 12:31begun. It was an unusually calm night, but rather foggy. I took
- 12:37the opportunity to go to the upper deck for a minute or two to get
- 12:39a breath of sea air. Oh you sir, sorry right, for fog
- 12:50really closes in out here, doesn't he. Yes, Rana cigarette, Oh
- 12:58thank you favoring on the train. Yes, I look forward to this part
- 13:05of the trip. It's relief. I say, I was on my way
- 13:09to the lounge. Would you join me for a whiskey? And so oh?
- 13:13I should love to, but I'm afraid I can't just now, no
- 13:16shame. Well, I hope we bump into each other again. Bade ayd
- 13:20bye. I remember as I came to that my thought was one of annoyance.
- 13:54I was lying in the lounge. Several faces hovered about me. Stranger
- 13:58on deck, Marvet Hobson and two other of the railway police. I say,
- 14:07all right, yes, yes quite thanks muve Ittt. What are you
- 14:11doing up here? We heard a row, someone shouting had been in trouble
- 14:15on me? Oh, blessed, That's probably why I was conked. You
- 14:18wanted to get a few of you out of the way. You too,
- 14:20man, go down below. I'm just coming into the lounge when I heard
- 14:24something, I ran back and line, yeah that's all they good it is?
- 14:28Did you see anyone? No? Afraid? Not? Well, come
- 14:31on, Hudson, move it you sure you're all right? No, I've
- 14:41got a beastly headache. Feel better if I knew what was going on.
- 14:45If anything's happened on the train, I will feel worse. Sorry, black
- 14:48was my fault? Was that chap who found me in the lounge when you
- 14:52got there? Yes, all sympathy and flutters. Well, I'll tell you
- 14:58this much before this verry reaches Dunkirk, I'm going to go through every compartment
- 15:03on the train, check every passenger. This thing's gone far enough now.
- 15:07I got a nasty feeling that the people were looking for got on a Victoria
- 15:11when we did. Why did they stop the train? Then, sir,
- 15:13and you created a version h Hobson, you on our work inside. Start
- 15:18at the first calm of it. You'll take one man and check the other
- 15:22passengers on the boat, those with cars, passports, identity cards, everything
- 15:28project If something looks clear, you detain them. Yes, oh lord,
- 15:33what have you got an aspirin? We managed to arouse the hour of a
- 15:43number of British and assorted subjects who objected to so rude an awakening, but
- 15:46we didn't find a solitary thing a miss on the train. Hobson and I
- 15:50covered it from one end to the other. Muppett returned with the same news.
- 15:54It seemed to be a disgustingly law abiding ship. But my aching head
- 16:00told me otherwise. At half past three in the morning British time at half
- 16:04past four French time. We docked at Dunkirk. At five minutes to five.
- 16:08The sleeping cars were pulled out of the ferry and the journey to Paris
- 16:11was begun. Hi, I'm sorry, sir, I don't blame you.
- 16:25It wis Hudson went back to the baggage cart. It just having a look
- 16:29about. Be on the safe side. We'd better believe that man posted outside
- 16:33the Duelist confivement, send him back a cup of tea and sam with I'll
- 16:37get you suping yo. I don't think so it And let's see. It's
- 16:40a quarter past six. We arrive at the garden, not at half past
- 16:45nine. Didn't light outside it? Yes, well another three hours and then
- 16:49inspector. Yes, once up. It's been trouble to two cars forward.
- 16:53One of our men's been cashed. A little frenchman's screaming has been robbed.
- 16:56A right, come on, three or four mass men with guns. They've
- 17:00rubbed everyone in the car. And the sound of it, women screaming,
- 17:02fainting all over the ruddy place about the robbers. I don't know, sir,
- 17:04But on the train somewhere a couple of our boys been after them.
- 17:07I don't know what happened after that. It's really a pity that so many
- 17:30people who would ordinarily make fine impressions neglect one very important thing, a sparkling,
- 17:37winning smile. And many people who've changed their way of cleaning their teeth
- 17:41in an effort to prevent tooth decay have found that their once winning smiles have
- 17:45faded gradually over a period of time. Now this is hard for you to
- 17:48notice, but your friends can tell. So try using a datipris that does
- 17:52more than help prevent tooth decay. A datipris that also whitens and brightens your
- 17:57teeth beautifully, makes them really clean, and no dantaprius cleansed teeth like powder.
- 18:04So try Doctor Lyons toothpowder, and if you don't agree that it gets
- 18:08your teeth cleaner than your present dantiprie, that it whitens and brightens your teeth
- 18:14in a way that restores to your smile all of its old time sparkle and
- 18:17brigance. Return the package and your money will be refundant. You can buy
- 18:21regular Doctor Lions toothpowder, or if you want the best of the emmoniated toothpowders,
- 18:26buy ammoniated doctor lions. No matter which you prefer, be sure you
- 18:30get doctor lyons and get back your winning smile. Now. The second act
- 18:37of pursuit on the night ferry sleeping car number eight was a bedlam. The
- 18:55railway police detective had not exaggerated the condition. It took ten minutes to to
- 19:00establish exactly what had happened, and this only when one of the pursuing officers
- 19:03returned from the chase empty handed. He gave me his report in the vestibule
- 19:07at the end of the car. First, IOVI so was when I wanted
- 19:11a number eight car. I saw a Detective Parnhill lying unconscious outside one of
- 19:15the compartments the jewelers. Rudier, Yes, Sir Roja came out and stood
- 19:19in the passage way, screaming bloody murder. His wife did likewise inside.
- 19:23Did you see the bandits? No, sir, but Rogge said they'd gone
- 19:26forward toward the engine. I ran that way. Another man joined me in
- 19:29the car seven. Hadn't he seen the men run past him? He must
- 19:32have done it been no, sir Rich stepped into the vestibule there for a
- 19:34glass of water. Oh, blast. Well, I couldn't find a trace
- 19:38of them, sir, went right up to the first car. Everything was
- 19:41quiet as you like. They couldn't have got off, Rudio says, they
- 19:45went forward. All right, We've only got seven cars on the engine to
- 19:48worry about it. You stand guard here, don't let anyone throw to the
- 19:52back, no one, do you understand, Yes, sir, oh Mavid
- 19:59has bano, he's coming around her. Where is he in, Rudy eyes
- 20:02can park good pubs? And there he's further back. Question in some of
- 20:06the other passengers. Yes, right, Well you tell him to give me
- 20:08a list of all the passengers who've been robbed. Yes, sir. Now,
- 20:11I want you to telegraph a head to Paris Gardner have a detail of
- 20:15police there. No one is getting off this train until we get those men
- 20:18straight away, so we should expect civil blamers. You Parnell. I'm feeling
- 20:29better. I'm all right here. Hey Dick, Yes, I know what
- 20:33you mean. Did you get a look at any of them? No,
- 20:36I was just outside to compart with looking at the window when it happened.
- 20:38It's all I remember, oh police, it is that. I am full
- 20:42of mortification. I am robbed by three large men. My wife loses her
- 20:47sense and hear you you ministrate to the ills of a man who has let
- 20:51this because they can't get off the trains. Now will you give me their
- 20:55descriptions? Gaze this I have done with the other policeman's see moment? Are
- 21:00you my fortune? Your grammar? Please tell your wife, monsieur, that
- 21:11we will recover her locket as well as your own belongings. Now you feel
- 21:14up to it, fine, yeah, yeah, come along, inn.
- 21:21We left the roudiers in their compartment, exchanging valuable criticisms of the efficiency of
- 21:26British police in the passageway. I stood a moment at the window looking out.
- 21:30There was something odd about it, a little to the life, chef,
- 21:38and you were standing here. Huh take my place for a moment.
- 21:44Ye, Now, then as you look out, can you see me?
- 21:48Yeah? What about now? I can still see your chef. A look,
- 21:55Inspector Hobson's just coming down from the other end. Can you see him?
- 21:57No, no, no, no, don't turn your head, just
- 22:00keep looking straight out. Now you tell me when you see him, Nash,
- 22:07that's twenty feet away. At least somebody cushed you from behind Parnell any
- 22:12one of those three compartments I did a producer of job Black seemed to know
- 22:17which compartments to go to. What must have made a whole of at least
- 22:21one hundred sounds, And I'm not going to get off with it. Who
- 22:23occupies compartment eleven? Just a sick James, not all salesman. Let's see
- 22:30compartment ten is the Rudiers? What about nine nine nine? Empty? Have
- 22:36you seen not all yet? Oh no, that was my next stop.
- 22:38We'll have a look empty panel. Did you see him go on? No
- 23:00share, unless unless he was the one who hit you, that would be
- 23:03the second time. Then, But why would he have done that on the
- 23:07ferry? Perhaps for the same reason they stopped the train on the other side,
- 23:11keep us off balance, always wondering when it's going to happen, but
- 23:14then when it does, and it did, we don't expect it. Well,
- 23:17not all is only one? The frenchman stated there were three masked men,
- 23:19Yes, so he did. What about the other passengers? What did
- 23:22they say? Well, they could only see the one man who entered the
- 23:26compartment. Huh might have been another outside though keeping watch, or the whole
- 23:30thing couldn't have taken more than three minutes. I we'll see about that later.
- 23:33Now we're going to search every car from seven forward, two men at
- 23:37each exit as we move up. No shooting and it can be helped.
- 23:40I don't think they'll risk pulling the emergency cord. It's too light out now,
- 23:42but be careful again. We searched every compartment, every passenger cars seven,
- 24:00five, four, three two. We made our way to the first
- 24:04car, and when we finished with it, we had nothing. The criminals
- 24:08had vanished. That's when I thought of the man who had sent Detective Kwie
- 24:12to the four of the train in pursuit of the robbers. We doubled back
- 24:15to the rear again. I left a man outside Roudier's compartment and continued on
- 24:19to the restaurant car, which up to them had not been searched. Well,
- 24:25how do they think they could get off? Though? When we reached
- 24:26Paris and when they got on, we haven't got any proof, no positive
- 24:30identification. We have to catch them with the goods. Oh by gum,
- 24:44look at that having breakfast cruiser q coub mister Nuttle, m oh, good
- 24:51morning, Davis. Have your head much better? Thank you, mister Nuttle.
- 24:56Would you mind standing up, sir, we'd like to search you.
- 25:00Oh not at all at robbery business. M I heard about it from the
- 25:04waiter, yes all. They said, all right, you'll stay here with
- 25:11him, will you please? Muff it? I say, you tell bo,
- 25:14but I do. Come on, have some phool just grateful business.
- 25:18Somebody's going to hear about this. Never heard of such a thing. What's
- 25:22the idea? Black? I think he came here after the hold up,
- 25:26gave the swag to someone and sat down for breakfast. If I'm right,
- 25:29the second man should be in the kitchen. It was still early. The
- 25:37two chefs and a scullery boy were smoking in a corner. Three waiters were
- 25:41lounging about idly folding serviantes. It was one of the waiters who gave away
- 25:45the show. As he saw us, his eyes darted to a rubbish bin.
- 25:49One of these chaps should thinker, you will keep an eye on the
- 25:52waiter, that one, won't you? Ah? Got it? Look up
- 26:07black diama knee. She was all right, he's only out amplique. You
- 26:22have a couple of pack you. Oh, he says, he's Innis and
- 26:26Hobson. Bring him along, will you? And I think he'll talk unless
- 26:41your we've recovered your duel. You have, I'm delighted. Are you really
- 26:51well? Then? Perhaps you don't mind explaining one or two points to us
- 26:55explained? Yes, for example, why you sent the detective the wrong way
- 26:59after the attack. But it is the way? Oh no, sir,
- 27:02it is not. If your story of the robbery were true, you couldn't
- 27:06possibly have been robbed and stood there outside your compartment without noticing in which direction
- 27:10the men ran. I am suggesting that you designed the robbery. You posed
- 27:15as a victim and then watched as mister Nuttall and a waiter held up the
- 27:18other passengers, that you handed your jewels to the waiter as he ran back
- 27:23to the restaurant car in order to verify your story. Why why should I
- 27:27do all this? Because there was no other way for you to get the
- 27:30stolen property off the train. The customs search luggage at the garden. Now
- 27:36it's doubtful that a rubbish ben would be investigated. Bring in the waiter it,
- 27:41yes, sir, Well here you are so, yeah, was identifier?
- 27:51Sit on away? Come on, I shall use pistol foot. I
- 27:56think that will be all, Monsieur Roudier for the hand, have some mup
- 28:00it. We later learned that Roudier had spent two months planning the robbery.
- 28:12The halting of the train, and the attack made upon me was as we
- 28:15had suspected. At the trial, evidence was brought to light linking the same
- 28:21gang with the earlier Golden Arrow train robbery. Strangely enough, Madame Rudier was
- 28:26exonerated of any part in the crime. As a true continental wife, she
- 28:30had been completely oblivious of her husband's business transactions. Pursuit and the Pursuit Is
- 28:37Ended. Pursuit is produced and directed by Elliott Lewis and is written by Anthony
- 29:03Ellis. Music was composed and presented by Eddie Dunstetter. Ben Wright stars as
- 29:07Inspector Peter Black, with Raymond Lawrence's sergeant Mutt. Featured in Delight's cast were
- 29:12John Dayner, Lou Krugman, Jane Nevello, Ann Bartman, Joseph Kerns,
- 29:17and William Johnstone. If your face hurts and burns and stings because of the
- 29:30scrape and pull, scrape and pull, the continuous scrape and pull of your
- 29:34razor over the same place as time and time again, cry Moullay. Brushless
- 29:40shaving cream. You'll find that Moulay does two important jobs. Because Molly is
- 29:45a cream with real body, it sets your whiskers up in a way no
- 29:48skimpy, watery cream can match, and takes the painful scrape and pull right
- 29:52out of shaving. And because Molly contains an abundance of soothing lanoline, it
- 29:59actually can sositions your skin while you shave, leaves your face feeling refreshed and
- 30:03supple without a trace of burner sting. When you shave with Molley, your
- 30:08face feels so fit, so clean, and so vibrantly alive that you don't
- 30:12need an after shave lotion. So for the greatest shaving comfort you've ever known,
- 30:18buy a tuber jar of the brushless shaving cream that combines real body with
- 30:22abundant lanolin and takes the scrape and pull right out of shaving. Ask for
- 30:29m O. L E. Molay. We invite you to join us next
- 30:41week at the same time when pursuit, we'll bring you another dramatic story of
- 30:45the famous inspector Peter Black of Scotland Yard relentlessly hunting down those whose disordered passions
- 30:52breed violence and murder. Another story of man hunting man when we bring you
- 30:57Pursue. Bob Stevenson speaking, this is the CBS Radio Network. Welcome back.
- 31:18Well kind of intriguing a different sort of case here for Inspector Black,
- 31:25as they're working to prevent a theft and to catch the thief before they get
- 31:30away. Typical thing is investigating, usually murder after it's already happened. I
- 31:37should also mention here that we had quite a few lost episodes between last weeks
- 31:42and this week's. The ones that we missed pursuit of the Soviet Embassy killer,
- 31:49pursuit of the parcels of death, pursuit of the thief who had a
- 31:52conscious suit of the Swandon killer pursuit, and the portrait of the young Lady
- 31:59and pursuit in the Woman who Died Alone. So definitely quite a few missing.
- 32:08But in another solid episode of this lesser known series, we turned a
- 32:15listener comments and feedback with an email from Laurie, who writes, I just
- 32:21recently discovered this app and I really enjoy it. I've been listening to a
- 32:24different old time radio app, but I found that I enjoy the detective shows
- 32:29most so I was glad to find your app and website. I was especially
- 32:32glad to see you're broadcasting the patent up Novak shows, which is one of
- 32:37my favorites. On a side note, I heard you mentioned that some people
- 32:39were not happy with the music, but I think it's a great touch.
- 32:43Don't change it. Well, Thanks so much, Laurie. I do appreciate
- 32:46you listening there. That will actually do it for today. We will be
- 32:52back tomorrow with pat Novak for Hire, and join us back here next Monday
- 32:57for another episode of Pursuit in the Time. Send your comments to Box thirteen
