- 0:01Waiting is not doing nothing if you're doing it on purpose.
- 0:04There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:08Chad #12119 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:11yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:14you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:16This message is dedicated to Karen A Barbonell.
- 0:19Here's the upgrade. You may think waiting is
- 0:22weakness, but upgraded thinking knows patience is power.
- 0:26Here's the story. In the summer of 1812, Napoleon
- 0:31marched into Russia with nearly half a million men.
- 0:34He wanted one thing a big, decisive battle.
- 0:37That's how he won. Find the enemy.
- 0:39Crush the enemy. Dictate the terms.
- 0:41The Russians saw him coming. Months before the invasion, an
- 0:44officer named Peter Djokovic wrote the plan down in a memo.
- 0:48Fight a war exactly contrary to what the enemy wants.
- 0:51Don't give him his battle. Trade space for time.
- 0:55The man who had to hold to that plan was Mikhail Kutuzov.
- 0:59He was in his late 60s, heavy and half blind from an old head
- 1:02wound. The court and the public wanted
- 1:04Moscow defended, so we gave them one fight at Burradino.
- 1:08It was one of the bloodiest days in history, and it settled
- 1:10nothing. And then he did what nobody
- 1:12could stand. He retreated and gave up Moscow.
- 1:16Napoleon rode into the ancient capital and waited for the czar
- 1:19to surrender. He sent envoys asking for terms.
- 1:23The Tsar refused to negotiate while French troops remained on
- 1:26Russian soil. The city burned.
- 1:28Supplies ran short. 5 weeks went by, and Kutuzov waited too.
- 1:32Napoleon was waiting for something.
- 1:35Kutuzov was waiting on purpose. In October, Napoleon finally
- 1:40retreated. Kutuzov didn't sit still.
- 1:43He followed. He harassed the retreat mile
- 1:45after mile, kept up pressure with rearguard actions, raids
- 1:48and battles, never letting the French regroup.
- 1:51The Grand Army came apart under hunger, cold, disease, and
- 1:54relentless Russian pressure. Napoleon had written the warning
- 1:58himself. Retreats, he said, cost more
- 2:01than the bloodiest of battles. In a battle, the enemy loses
- 2:04about as much as you do. In a retreat, you lose and he
- 2:08doesn't. He knew it.
- 2:09He walked into it anyway because he couldn't stand to wait.
- 2:14The better story to tell yourself is I'm not stuck, I'm
- 2:18waiting on purpose. Patience isn't doing nothing.
- 2:22Patience is refusing to play the other person's game.
- 2:25It's going slow now so you can move fast later.
- 2:29The plan was the easy part. The hard part for Kutuzov was
- 2:32holding to it while everyone else called him a coward.
- 2:34His patience paid off though, and he saved the country.
- 2:38Maybe you're waiting right now on a job, an answer, a child to
- 2:43come around. You've done the work and nothing
- 2:46has moved. You haven't lost though.
- 2:48Hold the plan, be patient. Patience is power.
