- 0:00Speaker 1: Well here. He is a member of the fifth es State.
- 0:03Sean Patrick means he's a an editor at the Salt
- 0:07Lake Reerbune.
- 0:08Speaker 2: He's a writer. He's uh, you're all over that paper.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Sean is also a movie reviewer and you can find
- 0:16his movie reviews at movie cricket dot nat, yep and
- 0:20uh Salt Lacribune of course sl trip dot com.
- 0:23Speaker 2: All right, what's going on the press? Is the fourthest
- 0:25oh it's the FOURTH'SI.
- 0:27Speaker 3: That was the joke about that. That was the title
- 0:29of the movie because it was like wiki leaks and
- 0:31the new media.
- 0:32Speaker 2: I got it. Okay, that's right, thank you.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Okay, we got a couple of art house movies and
- 0:37a couple of mainstream movies to talk about. We will
- 0:40start with Queer. This is Luca Guanino. It's the late
- 0:44newest movie he's He did Challengers earlier this year and
- 0:47he did Call Me by your Name a few years ago,
- 0:49so it will be a sexy movie. We have Daniel Craig,
- 0:53so he's sexy. But this is not James Bond. Daniel Craig.
- 0:57He plays William, an expatriot American in Mexico City in
- 1:00the nineteen fifties.
- 1:01Speaker 4: He's very lonely, middle aged.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Kind of you know, looking for the right guy to
- 1:05take the bed. He finds an American student, Eugene, played
- 1:09by Drew Starkey, and a relationship begins. Part of the
- 1:12movie centers on William taking Eugene around South America because
- 1:15William is in search of a powerful drug the locals use,
- 1:18which he thinks will give him telepathic powers. There's a
- 1:23local name for the drug, but most people call it ayahuasca. Yes,
- 1:26this is surreal in parts, sometimes a little too much so,
- 1:29and it doesn't always pay off in the best ways.
- 1:32It is fascinating though, to watch Daniel Craig in his
- 1:34post James Bond fase is long hair he has. It's
- 1:40a great character portrait of loneliness and longing.
- 1:44Speaker 4: So if that's what.
- 1:44Speaker 3: You're in for, and he has long hair, and he
- 1:46has long hair, three stars for queer and it's opening.
- 1:50Speaker 2: It a few places, and it's pretty pretty explicit.
- 1:53Speaker 3: It's based on a William S Burrow's novel, so the
- 1:56sexuality is fairly explicit. I was joking that in Two
- 1:59Nights Running, I got to see Daniel Craig having sex
- 2:04with a younger hot guy, and the next and the
- 2:07night before that Nicole Kevin having sex with a younger
- 2:09hot guy in Baby Ground.
- 2:12Speaker 4: Which we'll talk about it yet next week.
- 2:13Speaker 1: It's based on William Burrows, I mean loosely based on
- 2:17his own life and stuff that he did.
- 2:19Speaker 4: As many Williams.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Burrow's books were yes, all right, three stars stars.
- 2:26Speaker 4: So next we have the end.
- 2:28Speaker 3: This starts with a super rich family and what looks
- 2:30like their mansion, fancy furniture, lots of expensive paintings on
- 2:33the walls. We find out shortly that the family is
- 2:36actually an assault mine, hiding out from the apocalypse.
- 2:40Speaker 1: This is how the chill the Swinton movie. I thought
- 2:42that the other one was okay.
- 2:45Speaker 4: And they've been down there for like twenty years.
- 2:46Speaker 1: You know.
- 2:46Speaker 4: Mom is Tillda Swinton. She spends her day.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Hanging up art and taking it down and putting it
- 2:50up again. Dad is Michael Shannon. He's working on his
- 2:53memoir about life as an energy company CEO. And the
- 2:58book has nothing at all about whether their dad's company
- 3:00might have caused all this.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Oh, leave that part out.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Yeah, so so, and they have a son who was
- 3:08born in the salt mine. So he's twenty played by
- 3:10George McKay uh. He sees the first other human he's
- 3:13ever seen in his life outside of his family and
- 3:15friends and the servants that they brought down with him.
- 3:18She's played by Moses Moses Ingram, and she knows what
- 3:21the son doesn't know, which is what's happening up on
- 3:23the ground, which is why she wants to stay down
- 3:25there with them.
- 3:27Speaker 4: I should mention this is a musical. Why does everything
- 3:31have to be a musical?
- 3:33Speaker 1: Why?
- 3:33Speaker 2: Why? Why?
- 3:34Speaker 1: Why?
- 3:35Speaker 4: No? No, the proper question is why isn't everything?
- 3:38Speaker 5: Why is everything?
- 3:39Speaker 4: You go?
- 3:40Speaker 2: He forgot to mention Queer as a musical.
- 3:44Speaker 3: The song well, I mean there's some Kirkirka bait songs
- 3:47in Queer. Yeah, which, considering all the heroin being used,
- 3:50makes perfect sense. Yeah so yeah, so so the end
- 3:54is a musical. It's very downbeat musical that since it's
- 3:57you know, the apocalypse and all, but it's a fascinating
- 3:59way to get into the characters and their emotions and
- 4:01performances are really great, especially Tilda and Michael Shannon as
- 4:05the parents who are just oblivious to what got.
- 4:08Speaker 4: Them down in the coal mine and in the salt mine.
- 4:10Speaker 3: To begin with three and a half stars for the end,
- 4:13and it's at the Broadway and maybe a couple of
- 4:15other places, so.
- 4:17Speaker 4: The mainstream stuff.
- 4:19Speaker 3: They did not screen Craven the Hunter for Salt Lake
- 4:21City critics. And I didn't have the energy last night
- 4:24to do a double feature because I had to see
- 4:26Lord of the Rings last night. So good luck, good
- 4:29luck to daylor Aaron Taylor Johnson and his abs.
- 4:32Speaker 5: Well, I'm just gonna wait to see him in twenty
- 4:34eight years later.
- 4:35Speaker 2: I'll just wait for or.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Just wait for whichever streaming service picks it up in
- 4:39about a month. You know, it's just and you can
- 4:42watch it. You can watch his abs in the play
- 4:44in the in the privacy of your own home.
- 4:47Speaker 4: I did see. I did see Lord of the Rings, War,
- 4:49The War of the ro Hi him.
- 4:52Speaker 5: Why do I feel like they haven't advertised this a lot.
- 4:55Speaker 4: You're not watching the right channels.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Yeah, meant for you. This is an animated musical geno.
- 5:01Speaker 3: This is this is This is an animated If it's not,
- 5:04if it's a non musical, it's animated, and if it's Disney,
- 5:06it's both. This is an animated movie based on the
- 5:10Tolkien books. Happens in Rohan, the central kingdom of Middle Earth.
- 5:14This is about two hundred years before, as they refer
- 5:17to the War of the Ring. I didn't realize it
- 5:19had a name, but that's what it is.
- 5:22Speaker 4: It starts with Harah, the headstrong princess.
- 5:24Speaker 3: He can, who can ride faster and shoot a narrow
- 5:26farther than her older brothers.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Uh.
- 5:29Speaker 3: She She arrives in court where when a riot, when
- 5:33the king, her father Helm, is being confronted by a
- 5:36rival king.
- 5:39Speaker 4: And because the rival.
- 5:39Speaker 3: King wants his son to marry Harah, as his son
- 5:42is a wolf, well, to marry Harau, to to to
- 5:46unite the to unite the kingdoms. But but Helm knows
- 5:49that it's because the rival king wants to just take over.
- 5:53Speaker 4: And they have they have.
- 5:54Speaker 3: A fist fight outside, and Helm is Helm. Helm's full
- 5:57name is Helm Hammerhand. Of course, well, don't want to
- 6:00get into a fist fight with Helm hammer Hill, because
- 6:02you know, you get a name like that, you earn
- 6:05a name like.
- 6:06Speaker 4: That, exactly.
- 6:07Speaker 3: And and so in one punch, boom, guy's dead. And
- 6:10so the son of Wolf vows revenge, and.
- 6:14Speaker 4: He disappears for a while.
- 6:15Speaker 3: He comes back and he's still he still wants revenge.
- 6:17He's he mounts an attack with his private army and
- 6:20King and and King Helm and Harris's brothers defend the city.
- 6:25King Helm doesn't want Harra to be out there, you know,
- 6:27he's protecting his daughter and all.
- 6:29Speaker 2: That she can take care of herself.
- 6:31Speaker 3: I think that's what she keeps saying. And he's not
- 6:34gonna buy it, so Harra. So so while that's going on,
- 6:37Harry evacuates the city with all the villagers.
- 6:40Speaker 4: And they go to the fortress called Hornberg.
- 6:43Speaker 3: That's and that's where Wolf mounts the siege to starve
- 6:46the townsfolks out, and it's up to har to save everybody.
- 6:50This is done the director kenji U kami Yama, very big,
- 6:57very He's a veteran of of Japanese anime. He his
- 7:00first one of his first jobs was as a background
- 7:02artist on a Kira Well, so he's been he's been
- 7:05at this for a while, and he worked on Key's
- 7:08Deliverery Service and you know in his younger but and
- 7:10he's and he does a lot of Japanese TV and
- 7:12Japanese goes from the Shell, Redos and so on. Really good,
- 7:18uh subtle Japanese style anime. Uh, you know when when
- 7:24some of the some of the some of the background stuff,
- 7:25it's difficult to deletermen story. The back between live action
- 7:28and animation is just beautifully done. And then and the
- 7:31animation I think makes the movie. The look of the
- 7:33movie is the real reasons. See the story is uh,
- 7:37it's it's okay, it's fine, it's serviceable.
- 7:40Speaker 4: Harah harah haarah.
- 7:42Speaker 3: You know, I wish it was a little more rousing
- 7:44and that Harra didn't remind me of Mereti from Brave
- 7:47So but yeah, it's stunning. Look three stars for the
- 7:52Lord of the Rings, the.
- 7:54Speaker 4: War of the Role hero right and get all that
- 7:56on a marquee.
- 7:57Speaker 2: And is that was that from the original books or
- 7:59was it from like the I think it isn't.
- 8:01Speaker 4: I think it is more sort of loosely inspired by
- 8:04it all.
- 8:06Speaker 3: And there is you know, in the last five minutes
- 8:08you get like bits of fan service to tie you
- 8:10back to the to what you know, and it's it.
- 8:13Speaker 4: It's a little annoying really.
- 8:15Speaker 3: Because like these guys, these guys took all the trouble
- 8:17to do their own story. They don't need they don't
- 8:19need to tie back to what.
- 8:20Speaker 5: You know, all right, three stars for them, Okay, well,
- 8:24then three stars for queer, three stars for the end,
- 8:26three and a half for three and a half for
- 8:28the end. Craven, you're on your You're on your I
- 8:34have yet to read anything positive. Lord of the Rings
- 8:37War three stars?
- 8:39Speaker 2: What have we got?
- 8:40Speaker 4: Next Friday, we have Mufasa the Lion King.
- 8:44Speaker 2: And now what so we already had the Lion King?
- 8:47Speaker 4: Yes, this is another. This is this is another. This
- 8:51is another computer animated to look real the way.
- 8:55Speaker 2: It's the James Earl Jones Lion.
- 8:58Speaker 3: It is the origin story of Okay, yes, but it's
- 9:01but it's like real lions move.
- 9:03Speaker 4: Fast and scart while they look like real liance. But
- 9:05it's all c G. Yeah.
- 9:06Speaker 3: You also have, speaking of CG looking things, Sonic the
- 9:10Hedgehog three.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Jim Carrey said he did that because I bought a
- 9:15lot of stuff and I needed some money.
- 9:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Yeah, So those are the ones next week, and then
- 9:19Christmas just.
- 9:21Speaker 4: A few days after that, we have a complete unknown Okay.
- 9:25Speaker 2: That's everybody who's seen it is just little.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Little Timothy Shallome as as Bob Dylan is on Christmas
- 9:32on Christmas Day.
- 9:33Speaker 4: And then also a baby Girl with Nicole Keivin and.
- 9:38Speaker 5: Which apparently people are raving about as well.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Apparently the people that work with Timothy Shallomey everybody calls
- 9:45him Timmy.
- 9:46Speaker 3: Yes, it's Jimmy, Little Timmy shallam Well, when you're, when you're,
- 9:50when you're, when you're in that.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Travel size packaging, you know that's what you did.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you, Sean
