Transcript
- 0:22Yeah, Hey, what's up man, Thanks for having us on the show.
- 0:26This is Skinny for mushroom Head, and we are currently about to release
- 0:31album number nine, just short of thirty one years, coming up on thirty
- 0:36one years and August ninth. The new album's title is it called the Devil,
- 0:45and it should be available pretty much everywhere. We start touring to support
- 0:49it early August over in the UK and Europe, and so I'm really looking
- 0:54forward to that, and in the early fall. We'll be doing some touring
- 1:00in the States in October. So really looking forward to getting out and playing
- 1:04some of this new music. Fantastic Skinny, thanks for joining us thirty one
- 1:10years probably like you don't look at day over twenty one. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:15the mask helps keep us you on. It's actually gonna be difficult.
- 1:19I've been getting used to zoom interviews since COVID, where I can see people's
- 1:22faces and I can tell what I'm giving them the shit, so if they're
- 1:25starting to get bored, but with you, you're gonna be really hard to
- 1:26read. Yeah, it comes with the territory. I think that's part of
- 1:32our longevity. No, got a hell of a We all have a hell
- 1:34of a poker face as you'd say, ray much you've had releasing Night Studio
- 1:41album Pulled the Devil on August and ninth. So how are you feeling about
- 1:45it at this stage of the cycle. Oh? Man, really really excited,
- 1:49Like you know, an album eight was a wonderful life and we had
- 1:53released it in June or twenty twenty and COVID came in and just had,
- 1:57you know, its way with the world and definitely had its way with all
- 2:00the entertainers. You know. I I definitely felt it firsthand. How you
- 2:07know, non essential heavy metal drums were at the time, so we all
- 2:12had to kind of buckle down and you know, dig down in our spirits
- 2:15and say, hey man, we want to do this. You know,
- 2:16of course we're going to keep doing this, and you know, it's our
- 2:20livelihood, it's who we are create music, no matter if there's you know,
- 2:23a world you know to create it for left or not, We're gonna
- 2:27just do it until we die. So it feels really good to have an
- 2:30opportunity to release an album and then get out there and perform and support it
- 2:36on stage. And can you tell us a bit about the album from a
- 2:40musical point of view? And what do you're actual be going for with it?
- 2:45And this one, you know again, album number nine, it was
- 2:47very much another let's just let the music take us where it, you know,
- 2:53take it where it may, you know, let it lead. And
- 2:57the album is very diverse. There's a lot of doom gloom. There's some
- 3:00super aggressive, heavy heavy stuff, and you know there's a lot of stuff
- 3:04in between, super creepy dark, you know, typical stuff that you know
- 3:09ends up coming out of us, whether we intended or not. Everything ends
- 3:13up with a creepy, heavy, dark vibe, but just what ended up
- 3:16being the mushroom Head sound. So yeah, there's plenty of that, and
- 3:20then you know, like we we definitely stayed out of our comfort zone.
- 3:24I don't know really if there is one with mushroom Head, but we try
- 3:27to stay out of our own comfort zones and play with tempos and play with
- 3:30different keys, and play with non traditional arrangements and just let the music kind
- 3:38of guide us. And some songs for a little more straightforward and you know,
- 3:44put together specifically for you know, like this is a heavy metal song,
- 3:46and then some of it's just straight art and then it turns into dark
- 3:51art, which we love. I love the way you started the album saying
- 3:54with the track ey to why like and I f this is an almost funky
- 3:58sort of guitarr for them. He just kicks in with the gut wrenching scream
- 4:01and it's typical mush we made. But what was that meant to be a
- 4:04little bit misleading or you just having a bit of fun with it? Yeah,
- 4:08that's definitely a little bit of fun. So that's you know, my
- 4:11older brother Gravy that that song was one of the first ones that actually that
- 4:18song was the first time he and I got in the studio and we recorded
- 4:23anything. That was the first The vibe of that song was the first session.
- 4:28Yeah. Wow, we hadn't recorded together in over ten years, and
- 4:31we didn't have any material or nothing. We just got together and we talked
- 4:34and laughed more than we recorded. But when we went back and listened,
- 4:39we were like, man, check that out because we didn't you know,
- 4:41there was no click track and we just sat down and just started jamming.
- 4:45So we recorded and listened to sections of it and said, man, that
- 4:47right there could make a badass song. And Gravy, man, you know,
- 4:51he's got a hell of a lot of guitar playing background, and he's
- 4:55just a fun guy. You know. He likes you know, picking and
- 4:59playing all kinds of different stuff, like banjo style shit, and you know,
- 5:01he really really enjoys playing any string instrument really. But he was just
- 5:09kind of having fun, and I was like, man, that's just got
- 5:11a good vibe to it. And if we came into something just blazing heavy,
- 5:15you know, I was like, do that again, you know,
- 5:15and it just kind of started. So, yeah, we were just having
- 5:19fun. Man. Well it's a great guitar riff. I was put it
- 5:23on and I was just like just getting in the funk and then it's just
- 5:26coming and smashed me in the faces. That's pretty cool. Yeah, that
- 5:30one. That one definitely it rose above. As we worked on a little
- 5:33bit, We're like, man, doesn't matter what else is on the record,
- 5:36this one just has to be first. You know, We're just that's
- 5:41kind of the attitude we had. Like I said, this album comes across
- 5:45a little heavier, probably a little more aggressive, just because of post COVID
- 5:50or it started writing during COVID. You know, the world was still very
- 5:55uncertain, it wasn't turned back on yet, and we were like, well,
- 5:58let's just keep you know, doing what we do, make music,
- 6:00you know, hope the world turns back on. So this album definitely has
- 6:03more of a sinister, more of aggressive tone, just because you know,
- 6:06we weren't so hopeful anymore. We're like, everything's fucked. You've released a
- 6:15single to date, anyway, you've released a single fall in line. I
- 6:18was gonna ask you if it's a good sonic representation of the album, but
- 6:21then I thought it can't be, because there's so much going on there that
- 6:25it must be difficult for you to actually choose songs to represent the album,
- 6:29because nothing definitively does, does it. No, No, it really doesn't.
- 6:33If you were to pick another song and anyone you know heard that,
- 6:36they'd think, oh, well, they sound like it's more like a faith
- 6:40no more a Kink Floyd almost, Like you know, it is so diverse
- 6:44that it's hard to put a label on even mushroom Head in and of itself.
- 6:48But you know, once the label had heard the whole album and thinking,
- 6:54you know, a little bit more straightforward, have you metal that doesn't
- 6:58you know, necessarily offend or creep anyone out, so to speak. Yeah,
- 7:04but you know, maybe a little more accessible. That song was as
- 7:08far as like I said, it's just a straightforward heavy metal tune, catchy,
- 7:13nothing over the top like, and it wasn't supposed to be. It
- 7:15just had a lot of energy, and to be honest with you, it
- 7:18was the last song that we wrote for the album, so it was kind
- 7:23of like, you know, it came out of kind of nowhere and it
- 7:26was still kind of fresh. So when the label said they liked it,
- 7:29we were like, all right, cool, let's go with that one.
- 7:30Then We're very We've been doing this a long time, so we're not picky,
- 7:34you know, anyone. If the label wants to support something, then
- 7:39we're gonna absolutely let's let's take their lead. And Napal's been absolutely great to
- 7:44us. You know, I've been doing this a long time and they've really
- 7:48got their finger on the pulse of you know, not just modern metal.
- 7:51They get what's happening, you know, and they understand the whole oh just
- 7:57how an artist feels. You know, they care product and they make cool
- 8:01vinyl and they just they really, they really are. They're a good,
- 8:05good camp to be with, so real real honored to be working with them.
- 8:09Hell yeah, I'm gonna veer off track a little bit here, right
- 8:11because and this is going to be a really difficult one for you to answer.
- 8:15Sorry, but just say someone stumbled across this interview and they've never heard
- 8:18of Mushroom Head before, Like, isn't your whole catalog? Give me five
- 8:22songs that they should listen to to get the vibe of the band. Well,
- 8:26boy, that that's kind of tough. I don't even know if I
- 8:28know the real names of the songs as we are working titled, but no,
- 8:31I could. I could definitely play some ball here to some degree.
- 8:37You know, I think a lot of people need like a kind of lead
- 8:39in they never really heard it or seen it, and it's kind of heavy
- 8:45metal or you know, Moral Combat meets heavy metal Blue Man Group, if
- 8:48you will. Uh, we tell that to a lot of people just so
- 8:52they get a basic understanding. But you know, if you went through the
- 8:56albums, you know, I think there's some some songs off of thirteen that
- 9:00are really really heavy and just kind of poignant as far as like songs that
- 9:07you know, shroom was kind of shining in those moments. Well, you
- 9:13know, there's a few off of that album. One is called destroy the
- 9:16world around me. It's a little more doomy and epic, but it definitely
- 9:20captured the vibe and just the feeling very creative in certain spots too. Go
- 9:26back to uh what it is? A buick so and double X. Probably
- 9:31a lot of people know that one better, but BOMP is a definitely a
- 9:35favorite, fun to play. It's really really high energy. Still captures that
- 9:41vibe when we do it. Of the last album, the heresy just just
- 9:48really epic and doomy, and you know, I got that haunting vocal from
- 9:54Miss Jackie, which you know always shines this this new album, there's some
- 10:00there's some man contenders on it. We're gonna drop another single here. It's
- 10:03called oh what is the real title of? Uh that? Oh? Prepackaged
- 10:09and uh that one is pretty heavy and dark. So was that four?
- 10:16We need one more? Yet? You need one more? Okay, you
- 10:20said five? So we can go all the way back to nineteen ninety three,
- 10:26the first album. The song would be slow Thing, first song,
- 10:28first album. It just captured the vibe, uh, the creativity of the
- 10:33time, and you know it was powerful back then to use just samples,
- 10:37to use just a straight piano and heavy guitars, no vocals, and to
- 10:43wear a costumes and mask and open up with that song every night. And
- 10:48uh, it's still is one of my favorite songs to play. So there's
- 10:50there's five. I think you asked for five. I did that probably throws
- 10:54sun dozen rising there as well, bright because I every song that song comes
- 10:58on, I get fucking chills. Yeah, there's a lot of energy on
- 11:01that man thirteenth fold and so doesn't rise Nowhere to Go? Nowhere to Go?
- 11:05That's a really really deep one. I really always enjoyed that song.
- 11:09And I mean, you know that thirteenth and thirteenth a monster record. There's
- 11:13some other really really cool stuff too, but yeah, those are those are
- 11:16some contenders. In my book called the Devil also sees long time guitarist Dave
- 11:22Felton returned to the fold Way. So how did it feel having him back
- 11:24in and how did it impact the overall sound on this album? You know,
- 11:28he contributed to just two on this album just because of time and scheduling
- 11:35and logistics and just how things ended up being. But it was more about
- 11:39just kicking it and hanging out with him again. You know, it had
- 11:41been ten years and like I said that that first track I was that track
- 11:46was a result of the very first recording session that he and I did together
- 11:50in over ten years. So man, it definitely led to the vibe of
- 11:56the entire album being just kind of fun again and just like anything's possible.
- 12:01So yeah, man, it was just really really good to you know,
- 12:05share the stage and the recording studio again with him and once again you utilize
- 12:11the dull male female vical attack with Jacque Lafonzo and Scott back on there.
- 12:16So how difficult is it to get the dynamics or like with metal, you
- 12:18don't often get the male female dynamics, But so how often is it?
- 12:22Sorry, how hard is it to get that riot? It wouldn't be easy.
- 12:26Well, you know, there is a lot of experimenting, for sure.
- 12:30Just just see where they contrast or compliment each other in the best way.
- 12:35Sometimes they're kind of in the same range, so one needs to take
- 12:41the lead and one should sit back. And sometimes that's just a little bit
- 12:45of experimenting and saying who actually just sounds better? Who do we like,
- 12:48who's more pleasant to the ear, And not that any of them are wrong,
- 12:52but that's why you hear like kind of complex blends of vocals going on
- 12:56sometimes with us where there's harmonies up underneath, but they're not very not in
- 13:01the lead whatsoever. It's just because some of those parts and some of the
- 13:05texture once we removed it after experiment and playing with it, once we removed
- 13:09it, it just became very plain. So we just kind of tuck some
- 13:11of that stuff back in there. And it's just a result of the sound
- 13:16because of the experiment and trying to layer so much. But yeah, it
- 13:18is difficult sometimes because everyone's really fucking good, and how do you say,
- 13:22oh, yeah, this part's not so good, you know, so there's
- 13:26a little better and you're better for this, you're better for that. Everyone's
- 13:28really great, so I think a lot of times they even know the vibe
- 13:35of the part that oh man, that's that's totally a Scotty part. Oh
- 13:37and that's totally a Jackie part. So you know, everyone's really comfortable working
- 13:43with each other. And and that would, I think lent itself to a
- 13:46lot more opportunity for this this album to kind of shine because there's a lot
- 13:52of lead vocal moments all over this album. Man, all three of the
- 13:54vocalists literally I think did an amazing job this time. Absolutely so you probably
- 14:01would wouldn't get this because you produce the album and you live with it every
- 14:03day. But from my point of view, like as a listener, the
- 14:07one thing that struck me was like, listen along and you sort it in
- 14:09you ahead, you're trying to trying to guess what vocals coming next, And
- 14:15when I was listening to your album, I had no idea. Like I've
- 14:16been listening to one part, I'd be thinking, yet, my voice has
- 14:18got to come in here and do this, and then Jackie'd come in and
- 14:22be beautiful, and that that effect works really well, Like it's not what
- 14:26you'd expect. I guess I'm trying to say, yeah, And sometimes that's
- 14:30it. We find that, like a formula just does not work for us.
- 14:33We have to let the music kind of tell us where it needs to
- 14:37go. And you know, again, that's part of the I think the
- 14:41beauty of producing your own music and having you know, other artists that are
- 14:45open to experimenting and really seeing it through instead of Hey, I just have
- 14:50my one idea and that's what I want. Sometimes that's perfect and we get
- 14:54that. But watchmand really likes to experiment recently, like you personally took on
- 15:01keyboards, samples, and water drums live and on this you shared the studio
- 15:05drums and percussion with Aiden and Robbie, So I know from experience how hard
- 15:11it is working with one drum. How the fuck did you make it work
- 15:13with three? You know, it's it's fun because like certain sections, it's
- 15:18like, all right, well let's you know, here's the basic beat and
- 15:20here's the groove and here's the riff. But you know, maybe your take
- 15:26on it could inspire a different drum pattern or a different guitar pattern, you
- 15:31know, because of the way they did their kick, you know, accents
- 15:33or whatever. So sometimes you'll end up with something completely different that was based
- 15:39off of the drum beat from another guy. So it doesn't always just you
- 15:43know, work just for drums. Yeah, and sometimes you know, you
- 15:48can just mute it all out and take that beat and turn it into almost
- 15:52electronic beat that's going on underneath and turns into a layer. So it's not
- 15:56just all right, you played this part, you played this part, or
- 15:58you played this song, and you know, I'll play this song. A
- 16:02lot of it was hey, you know, kind of hit a wall here,
- 16:04I keep playing the same beat on this wall. What are you here?
- 16:07You know? Here to take the sticks go at it? So again,
- 16:11it was very, very fun this time, and very It was one
- 16:14of the faster drum albums. Usually drums take forever, but between the three
- 16:18of us kind of fastening it back and forth and just you know, all
- 16:22of us listening going, ah, that that'll be. That's more fun.
- 16:25It's easier to play, it's more fun. It bounces, Yeah, let's
- 16:27do that, you know, or sometimes it's like, oh that think that
- 16:30that beat just doesn't work. So it was really fun to have three guys
- 16:36just go at it and have their approach. And some songs actually have about
- 16:38three of us on it. It's a conglomeration of it. Well, very
- 16:41cool, very cool. Now we sort of touched on this before, but
- 16:45your previous album, A Wonderful Life is universally lauded by people loved it.
- 16:51So was it temping in a way to rehash that winning formula on this next
- 16:55album or was it important for you to sort of step away and continue growing.
- 17:00You know, It's funny because there are some songs that are on this
- 17:03album that feel like they just stepped right off the last page of A Wonderful
- 17:07Life, without a doubt it just because it's you know, the current lineups,
- 17:15you know, influences or whatever. Not much has changed in four years
- 17:18in certain aspects, but you know, I don't know. And then you
- 17:25know, on the on the flip side, quite a bit changed. Like
- 17:26I said, this album is a little more aggressive, it's a little more
- 17:30it's a little darker, and some of it's some of it's very again,
- 17:34very experimental. There's a song I think hall hallucination and uh, we just
- 17:40ended up calling it. It was labeled dark art for a while, one
- 17:42of the working titles, just because it's it's very artsy and you just kind
- 17:47of don't know where. It's very non traditional as far as a structure.
- 17:52Yeah. Again, you know it's not not always easy sweet. So much
- 17:59of your head formed back in nineteen ninety three, mates, So what was
- 18:02the musical climate like that gave birth to the band? And where did you
- 18:04fit in? Initially we didn't fit in. I don't think. I think
- 18:10maybe now we're starting to fit in finally after thirty years, it's like,
- 18:12oh, maybe maybe I'm under something. I don't know. Yeah, right,
- 18:21this mass heavy metal thing might catch on one day. See who knew,
- 18:26right? I mean, God Blessed Liipnot Man one of the biggest heavy
- 18:30metal bands in the world. You know, holy shit. So you know
- 18:33that that shows me I wasn't that far off back in ninety three that you
- 18:37know, this type of entertainment you know, not only you know could be
- 18:44popular, but here it is proof, you know. I mean, it's
- 18:48beyond popular. It's part of subculture at this point. Horror movies, comics,
- 18:52you know, cosplay, all that stuff. It wasn't that stuff wasn't
- 18:55around in ninety three. So for us to stay are a theatrical kind of
- 19:02heavy metal thing. We didn't really fit in in many places at all with
- 19:07metal bands rock bands. The places that we kind of fit were more festival
- 19:12style, like we would actually get to play like raves, So that kind
- 19:18of opened our eyes to shit, we're gonna just have to do our own
- 19:21thing, so we didn't. We hit the street and just started playing as
- 19:26much as we could. Yeah. I can edit this question out to you,
- 19:29Bri if you don't want to answer it, because I didn't have it
- 19:30any initially. But when you mentioned Slipknot, like, do you think,
- 19:34because I know a lot of it was media generated, that supposed war between
- 19:37you guys back then. But do you think that that had a negative effect
- 19:41on you guys at all in terms of moving forward as a band? Uh?
- 19:45You know, I mean how could it not in the reality of things,
- 19:49you know, any negative everything, Oh, you know, negative process,
- 19:52you know, still press, Yeah, it's still negative. I've been
- 19:56doing this a really long time, and people tend to remember your downfalls.
- 20:03They tend to pick on your downfalls. They tend to pick on any like
- 20:06me, a politician or another band member or another band. People tend to
- 20:10remember the shitty moments or just how it was, whether you had something to
- 20:14do with it or not. And that's unfortunate for people that really believe in
- 20:18what they do and they move on or you know whatever. You know,
- 20:22I just in hindsight, I wish, you know, a lot of that
- 20:26shit wouldn't have ever happened or had been said. But you know whatever,
- 20:30here we are again. They're one of the biggest bands in the world.
- 20:33God bless them. I can only imagine how much shit they had to go
- 20:37through and have to go through just to create music and art. You know,
- 20:41I'm really happy for them in so many fucking ways. Like I said,
- 20:47it's proof positive that you know, people like this kind of entertainment.
- 20:49Yeah, so yeah, you know, like I got a lot of compassion
- 20:55for him. Like I said, I can only imagine how much shit they've
- 20:56had to deal with. A nice pool bosses too, sagine how big they'd
- 21:00be if they didn't get drop brought up in all that bullshit? Right right?
- 21:07So back up to you egos, like you sound it draws pretty much
- 21:11from every form of metal even made made, but you also got elements of
- 21:15hip hop, punkd as electronics. You got so much going on, bro,
- 21:18Like, how do you how do you find the balance in the writing
- 21:19and recording process? It must be a fucking nightmare it again, Sometimes you
- 21:26just have to let the music take the lead and not get lost into you
- 21:30know, what it could be, because sometimes if it takes it away from
- 21:33the original idea or that original just it can be a vibe, you know,
- 21:37or a balance, or a lyrical phrase or something. Once you start
- 21:41layering things in and making things as we say proper or how it should be
- 21:45like organized or arranged, I think it starts to lose its actual genuineness.
- 21:52So that's why we leave it. And you know, maybe we're a little
- 21:56add as well. You know we one style just doesn't sit with us.
- 22:00Well, you know, we want to try a little bit of all of
- 22:02it, you know, in everything, So you know, it's it's part
- 22:06of it. Part of it is capturing the uh, just a vibe of
- 22:12how we feel. For whether it lasts for a month or a week,
- 22:17it's really important to try to get some of that stuff out and get it
- 22:18recorded and then watch it grow. Or sometimes you're like, well, how's
- 22:22this in a shitty mood? And that song's really going to be that that
- 22:26whole idea is way too slow and depressing. Move it on, move on,
- 22:27don't drink it, bag out. You know, I can imagine that
- 22:32beats. It'll be quite a few songs where the band's speeding. I like
- 22:36half of it, likes a song half does it with all that extra stuff
- 22:38going on to say, you do like a vote and majority rules on something
- 22:41like that, or has produced do you get final? Say? Well,
- 22:45yeah, I always end up final. Say somebody's got to you know,
- 22:48make the call. But in the in the long run, the strong stuff
- 22:53just floats to the top man just rises above everything else, and we don't
- 22:57really have to, you know, talk about the turd in the punch bowl,
- 23:00so to speak, or just move along man, that that's not a
- 23:06good idea. You know. It's like, you know, I know it
- 23:07was your inspiration for the day, but did they capture any of us the
- 23:11next day or yourself? We say it a lot, man, We go
- 23:15home Picasso and we come back the next day. Is the Dutch Boy's kind
- 23:22of painting? We do right? Adopt the right albums right, Like would
- 23:29you say that mushroom Head has bound as sound or are you still experimenting growing?
- 23:34I think that is part of finding our sound, or at least identifying
- 23:37what it is that we do. Is that experimenting. We are constantly looking
- 23:42for new textures and tones to amplify how we actually feel, to bring our
- 23:49emotions to life, to capture some of that stuff. You know. It's
- 23:55we're not a one size fits all band, and I'm actually proud to say
- 23:57it. Very cool. So let's do the figures before Matt and I actually
- 24:03can't remember the last time you guys came to Australia, So where are you
- 24:07going to rectify that? As soon as possible, and the last time we
- 24:11were there, I had one of the best times ever. It was a
- 24:12sound wave twenty fourteen. Yeah, and we got to do all of it.
- 24:17And our off days were shows. Yeah. Our side shows were with
- 24:22Zombie and corn I believe and it was a bit of a blurb, but
- 24:26man, what a hell of a time, what a hell of a country.
- 24:29I would love to come back as soon as possible. The album Cold
- 24:33the Devil comes out on August the ninth. Might say, what's next for
- 24:36Mushroomhead after that? What do you got planned? Actually we started European and
- 24:42UK tours is a small run a couple of weeks, but it actually we
- 24:47started I think on the seventh or the eighth, So we're on tour the
- 24:51day the album comes out, and when we come back, we're going to
- 24:56do a month, almost a month in the States for the month of our
- 25:00so we got you know, a good six seven, eight weeks of touring
- 25:03coming to support the album. I'm really looking forward to it. Can you
- 25:07just move your right arm for me, mate, so I know you're a
- 25:10real person. You haven't moved the whole interview. I just need to know
- 25:14if I'm talking to someone. If I'm talking to a robot, it's animatronic,
- 25:21all right. Skin has been a pleasure speak with. You may call
- 25:22the Devil is out August night. I think it's probably the best thing you
- 25:26guys have done in a long time. It's fucking great, so I can't
- 25:29wait for people around it. Thank you, man, I appreciate it operates
