- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The Propers of the Day According to the Roman Missal before 1955. The Feast of Saint Praxades, July 21 in the year of our Lord 2026.
- 0:21The feast of Saint Pius the first on July 11 recalled to our mind Saint Prudenciana and her sister Saint Praxades who both placed their house at the disposal of this holy pontiff. The first appears in the cycle on May 19 under the reign of the risen Lord, and the second on this day under the reign of the Holy Ghost. On the Tuesday of the third week of Lent, this station is held at Rome in the titular church of Saint Prudensiana and on the Monday in Holy Week at the titular church of Saint Praxades.
- 1:07This saint, a daughter of the Roman senator Prudens, consecrated her virginity to God and renounced her great wealth in favor of the poor and of the church. She thereby acquired the treasure and precious pearl of the heavenly kingdom. The religious ceremonies which took place in her mansion attracted the attention of the pagans. Many Christians were arrested there and led away to death. She died under Antoninus in the second century after having besought God to deliver her from the sight of such woeful scenes.
- 1:50Her body was laid by that of her father and sister in the cemetery of her grandmother, Priscilla. Let us celebrate joyfully the feast of the Blessed Virgin Praxades in order to obtain thereby sentiments of loving devotion. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. The Introit.
- 2:22I spoke of thy testimonies before kings, and I was not ashamed. I meditated also on thy commandments, which I love exceedingly. Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 2:58I spoke of thy testimonies before kings, and I was not ashamed. I meditated also on thy commandments, which I love exceedingly. The Collect. Let us pray. Graciously hear us, O God our Savior, that as we rejoice in the festival of blessed Praxades, Thy Virgin, so we may be taught by the spirit of pious devotion through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 3:44Amen. A lesson from the first letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians. Brethren, about virgins I have no command from the Lord, but I give you my opinion as one who is, under the Lord's mercy, a true counselor. This then I hold to be the best counsel in such times of stress, that this is the best condition for man to be in. Art thou yoked to a wife?
- 4:22Then do not go about to free thyself. Art thou free of wedlock? Then do not go about to find a wife. Not that thou dost commit sin if thou marriest, nor if she marries, has the virgin committed sin. It is only that those who do so will meet with outward distress.
- 4:48But I leave you your freedom. Only, brethren, I would say this, the time is drawing to an end. Nothing remains but for those who have wives to behave as though they had done. Those who weep must forget their tears. And those who rejoice, they're rejoicing.
- 5:17And those who buy must renounce possession. And those who take advantage of what the world offers must not take full advantage of it. The fashion of this world is soon to pass away, and I would have you free from concern. He who is unmarried is concerned with God's claim, asking how he is to please God, Whereas the married man is concerned with the world's claim asking how he is to please his wife and thus he is at issue with himself. So a woman who is free of wedlock or a virgin is concerned with the Lord's claim intent on holiness bodily and spiritual in Christ Jesus our Lord.
- 6:20The gradual, thou hast loved justice and hated iniquity. Therefore, God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness. Alleluia. Alleluia. With thy comeliness and thy beauty, set out, proceed prosperously and reign.
- 6:45Alleluia. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. At that time Jesus told his disciples this parable. The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field. A man has found it and hidden it again.
- 7:09And now for the joy it gives him is going home to sell all that he has and buy that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is as if a trader were looking for rare pearls. And now he has found one pearl of great price and has sold all that he had and bought it. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was cast into the sea and enclosed fish of every kind at once. When it was full, the fishermen drew it up and sat down on the beach where they stored all that was worth keeping in their buckets and threw the useless kind away.
- 7:58So it will be when the world is brought to an end. The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the just and will cast them into the furnace of fire where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Have you grasped all this? Yes, Lord, they said to him. And he said to them, every scholar then, whose learning is of the kingdom of heaven, must be like a rich man who brings forth out of his treasure things new and old.
- 8:42The offertory. Grace is poured abroad in thy lips. Therefore hath God blessed thee for ever. The secret. May the offering of thy consecrated people be accepted by thee, O Lord, in honour of thy saints, by whose merits it knoweth that it hath received aid in time of trouble.
- 9:11Through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface: Just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the powers stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven, together with the blessed Seraphim, joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts.
- 10:20The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion.
- 10:41The kingdom of heaven is like to a merchant seeking good pearls who, when he had found one pearl of great price, gave all that he had and bought it. The post communion. Let us pray. Thou hast filled thy household, o Lord, with sacred gifts. Ever comfort us, we beseech thee through her intercession whose festival we celebrate through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages.
- 11:29Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. Saint Praxades, pray for us.
