- 0:17[SPEAKER_00]: He caught up with NFL.com, senior writer, Kevin Petra, prior to the proble games.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_00]: He said the Jack Wars and he, his representation, they have not had any talk yet.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_00]: So we're gonna dive into the Devon Lloyd contract and pending for agency, all that stuff right here.

- 0:57[SPEAKER_00]: So, Devin Lloyd, as I mentioned, he said that he has not had talks with the team yet.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_00]: This is what Kevin Patro wrote.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_00]: Lloyd said that while he prefers to stay in Jacksonville, he has had no talks with the team yet about the future opting to focus on Pro Bowl before frequency ramps up.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_00]: The fact that they have not had any talks and they would need to get a deal done before free agency, before the whole can of worms opens up that is allowing Devon Lloyd to hit free agency and allowing all the bidding wars to start and all that stuff because he's going to be the top free agent linebacker.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_00]: uh... he had an incredible year uh... he five interceptions led to a fc along with t-maid intonio johnson the huge pic sick against the king's city chiefs seven passes defended he was able to create a lot of pressure on the quarterback he was a great run defender
- 1:58[SPEAKER_00]: It was unbelievable what he did this year.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_00]: The improved consistency that Devin Lloyd had in 2025 was really, that was the crux of the Devin Lloyd situation heading into 2025.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_00]: He was a player that had incredible highs, but also some really disappointing, frustrating kind of like mental lapses throughout games.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_00]: that happened just too much during the first three years of his career.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_00]: You get into year four, Jaguar is don't pick up the 50-or-option, which of course they should not have picked up the 50-or-option, because likely franchise tag the 50-or-option, the number that is associated with that includes a lot of edge players.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_00]: So like, it makes no sense to pick up a 50-or-option for a off-ball linebacker when that number
- 2:52[SPEAKER_00]: But the option contract number is going to include players like Trayvon, what like Edge player, it makes no sense.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_00]: It makes sense plenty of sense for an Edge player, but when you look at the 50 option, it didn't make sense for Devin Lloyd.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_00]: When you look at the franchise tag, it makes no sense for Devin Lloyd.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_00]: The franchise tag for linebackers, whether you're an off-ball linebacker or an on-ball linebacker Edge player, is $28 million and that $28 million goes directly to the cap.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_00]: You don't get to, you know, pro-rate any of that money.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's directly to your cap in year one.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_00]: $28 million for a franchise tag, so anybody who's talking about using the franchise tag on Devin Lloyd to me, that doesn't make any sense.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_00]: It just straight up does not.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_00]: Really, I just don't think the Jaguars need to be a team that utilizes the franchise tag, because ultimately the franchise tag is a tool that does not help you from a cap standpoint.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_00]: It's a tool really that
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like teams that are cheap should utilize, teams that don't have the actual money, or the actual funds, or the willingness to use those funds to kind of circumvent having to dole out a mega contract, really.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: The Jaguars don't have that issue.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_00]: Shotcon, he has made sure they don't have that issue.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_00]: He is willing and able to spend as much as he can within the rules of the NFL to make sure the jackwars are basically utilizing every advantage that they can and every tool that they can that is at their disposal within the rules of the salary cap.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_00]: So that's one great thing about shotgun as an owner.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_00]: Again, the $28 million dollars.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_00]: It's not about the money, it's about the cap space.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_00]: It does not make sense to have $28 million on the cap for 2026 for an off-ball line backer.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_00]: I don't care who it is.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_00]: The thing here, though, is Devon Lloyd and the Jack Wars, according to Devon Lloyd, they have not had any talks yet, and you've got a little over a month before teams can start negotiating in the legal tampering period window.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's a month and a week, March 11th.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_00]: This is when the legal tampering period begins.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_00]: So if you don't have a deal done before that date, he's probably going somewhere else.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_00]: Even though he says he would like to be in Jacksonville, and we'll read this full quote from him.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_00]: He said, I take pride in being able to do what I did last year in any defense.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, new coaches came in and they understood that I have a skill set, and you know, as the weeks progress, they really started allowing me to utilize that skill set more and more and play at the level that I'm playing.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_00]: So it's always great whenever a defense of coordinator believes in you.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, that's the case with any player.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_00]: You know, all these guys, you know, the coaches,
- 5:58[SPEAKER_00]: do put them in the best position.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_00]: So lots of you know, I was definitely a product of that.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_00]: And then me and then just me being right for myself as far as being at my best every week, it really just comes down to every day, ready to attack practice, ready to attack the game and that's nutrition, sleep, and all the above.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, he's talking about being a professional.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_00]: He's talking about how the Jaguar is coaching staff, including Anthony Camponele, Jaguar's defensive coordinator, and Tim Lu Cabu, Jaguar's linebackers coach.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_00]: We're able to put him in positions to succeed, which is attacking downhill, having simplified coverage assignments, and really blitzing a lot more as well.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_00]: making plays on the ball.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_00]: If you're able to simplify things in coverage for him, if you're able to allow him to attack downhill, he's going to play really well.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_00]: And he's going to do that better than most players in the league because his skill set is so aligned with that type of strategy, right?
- 6:59[SPEAKER_00]: And Patrick talked about how the franchise tag is 28.2 million, which is absolutely crazy.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_00]: This is what Devon Lloyd continued on to say.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_00]: I want to be where God wants me to be.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_00]: For me, being back in Jacksonville, my mom lives out there, you know, obviously my lady is out there.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: There are a lot of pros to being out there.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_00]: And so for me, it's just about being in the right spot.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_00]: Ultimately, that's the number one most important thing being in the right spot.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_00]: So,
- 7:24[SPEAKER_00]: I think in his heart of hearts, he would like to stay in Jacksonville, but I also think that he knows he's probably about to get paid $20 million a year.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_00]: You look at NFL linebacker contracts.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_00]: And he's going to be up there, man.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_00]: On the low end, I think you're talking about a Zack bond type contract.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_00]: Zack Bon after having an insane year in 2024, he signed with the Eagles in 2024 as a one year deal.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_00]: Had a crazy year for them as an off-ball linebacker.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_00]: He signed a $17 million per year deal over three years.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_00]: He was a little bit older than Devon Lloydas, certainly.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_00]: but he had an incredible season.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_00]: So I think the low end number for Devon Lloyd is probably around that $17 million mark.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_00]: I think the high end number, above Zach Bond right now, you've got Tremaine Edmonds at 18 million.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_00]: You've got Rokwandsmith at 20 million.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_00]: You've got Fred Warner at 21.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think he eclipse his Fred Warner, but I do think Devon Lloyd could very much be in that $18 to 20 million range.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_00]: And for the Jack Wars, I just don't know that that's worth it.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_00]: when you've got for agent at running back who played really well if region corner back who played really well multiple other free agents who are kind of like smaller role players and and deven Lloyd uh... certainly it's a lot to figure out and it seems like the jackwars are i wouldn't say they're content to let him walk certainly but when when they have to come down to brass tax and figure this thing out within the rules of the salary cap
- 9:17[SPEAKER_00]: Paying an off-ball linebacker might just not be in the cards, paying them that much.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_00]: Like they're paying for a look, but his contract is way down the list when you talk about he's making $10 million per year right now.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_00]: If they could pay Devin Lloyd 10 million dollars per year, they would probably do that.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_00]: But that's just probably not realistic, unfortunately.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_00]: And I would love to see Devin Lloyd, Monterey, plus or Brown, and Travis ET and all back for the Jaguars.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_00]: And Dennis Gardeck and a couple other guys too.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_00]: But I just don't know how realistic that is.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_00]: And when you look at the way the Rams, where James Latzon, Liam Cohen, cut their teeth in the NFL, the way they've handled things, they've been more willing to pay running backs.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_00]: then linebackers.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_00]: It will be more willing to pay cornerbacks than linebackers.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_00]: Now, you can also talk about the specific player, like it's not just like this position versus this position.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_00]: It's also, well, how much do we value this player at this position?
- 10:16[SPEAKER_00]: I think the Jaguars are going to believe with Anthony Campanylei being a linebackers guy in Tim Lukobu being a great linebackers coach.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_00]: that they can find production at linebacker with FOIA LUICAN, they have Jack Kaiser and Ventura Miller in the fold.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_00]: There's going to be a ton of free agent linebackers that don't get paid that much, and there's actually a very good linebacker class of coming in this 2026 NFL draft.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_00]: So my best guess is that Devon Lloyd goes and gets paid somewhere else.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_00]: I think that this report does nothing but kind of bolster that opinion.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_00]: The fact that they have not negotiated at all yet, they have not had talks about a new contract here in Jacksonville between the front office and Devin Lloyd's camp.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_00]: Again, no guarantee.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_00]: You don't want to go in and say, oh, Devin Lloyd's definitely gone.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_00]: But everything prior to this report led me to believe that he probably would be gone.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_00]: And this report.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_00]: Unfortunately, does not make you feel any different.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_00]: So, Devin Lloyd, in my opinion, most likely to hit for agency get $18 to $20 million per year.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_00]: And whether or not he's able to play at the level he played this year will depend on how his next team, if he does move on, decides that they're going to deploy him.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_00]: If they follow anything, he can't but he lays lead and let Devin Lloyd play a simplified coverage role.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_00]: and attack down hill, both against the run in the past, they're gonna do very well.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_00]: When it comes to the Jaguar's potentially replacing Devon Lloyd, we mentioned the guys they have on the roster, they also like to run a lot of three safety coverages.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you could see a lot of Antonio Johnson, Eric Murray, and Caleb Ransal on the field next year.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_00]: You could see Ray Omlaine in that mix too.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_00]: And again,
- 12:15[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of free agent linebackers upcoming, a lot of talented, off-ball linebackers in the draft.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll see how it ends up.
