- 0:01Speaker 1: The fourth of December twenty twenty began as a quiet
- 0:05Speaker 1: morning at the Payne family home in Columbus, Ohio. The
- 0:09Speaker 1: regular calm of the household was interrupted when twenty three
- 0:12Speaker 1: year old Casey returned home from his dentist appointment. Casey
- 0:16Speaker 1: was shot to death just inside the doorway of his
- 0:19Speaker 1: grandmother's house, the sandwiches he had purchased for lunch falling
- 0:24Speaker 1: to the ground next to him. The following moments were
- 0:28Speaker 1: traumatic and chaotic. In the confusion, a few things became clear.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Casey had been killed by a sheriff's deputy. He had
- 0:37Speaker 1: no criminal history or associations, and had been trying to
- 0:41Speaker 1: enter the house where he lived. But Casey also carried
- 0:46Speaker 1: a gun. Hi there, I'm Kevin, and welcome to Just
- 0:54Speaker 1: Thought Lounge. Today. We're tackling a case years in the making.
- 0:58Speaker 1: It's a controversial one, and it's easy to see why.
- 1:02Speaker 1: This is a story about perception. Depending on how you
- 1:05Speaker 1: view the events, you'll come to very different conclusions. Let's
- 1:10Speaker 1: take a look. Sharon Payne had lived in her house
- 1:29Speaker 1: on a state's place in Columbus, Ohio for twenty three years.
- 1:34Speaker 1: By December twenty twenty, she had retired from decades working
- 1:38Speaker 1: in customer service at a local bank. Sharon was a widow,
- 1:42Speaker 1: but the house that she and her husband had purchased
- 1:45Speaker 1: so many years ago was now full of the family
- 1:48Speaker 1: that they had built together. On the morning of December fourth,
- 1:52Speaker 1: her daughter Tamila dropped her five year old son at
- 1:55Speaker 1: the house before going to work. He was unwell and
- 1:58Speaker 1: unable to attend school that day. Sharon was also caring
- 2:02Speaker 1: for her ten year old granddaughter and four year old
- 2:05Speaker 1: great granddaughter that morning. As it approached noon, she prepared
- 2:10Speaker 1: bowls of oatmeal for the children, bringing two of the
- 2:12Speaker 1: little ones to her room at the back of the house.
- 2:16Speaker 1: The youngest, four year old Leah, sat at the kitchen table.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Off of the kitchen is a side door to the house,
- 2:24Speaker 1: the one commonly used by the family while the children ate.
- 2:28Speaker 1: This side door was unlocked and opened almost simultaneously, a
- 2:33Speaker 1: series of loud, popping noises rang out. Debris from gunfire
- 2:37Speaker 1: flew into the small kitchen. Sharon's grandson, Casey Goodson, or
- 2:43Speaker 1: c J, as his family affectionately knew him, fell face
- 2:46Speaker 1: first from the doorway on to the kitchen. Floor nine
- 2:51Speaker 1: one one.
- 2:51Speaker 2: What is the address of your emergency.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Goes, thanks, Ye, what's the emergency?
- 2:58Speaker 4: My grandfather just got that in the back.
- 3:00Speaker 2: He come in the house or I don't know if
- 3:01Speaker 2: he's still up.
- 3:03Speaker 1: I'm sorry, what just happened?
- 3:05Speaker 2: My grandfather just got sawed? Okay?
- 3:08Speaker 5: Where did this happen?
- 3:10Speaker 6: Oft my house?
- 3:11Speaker 2: Who lives awaiting?
- 3:12Speaker 7: So?
- 3:13Speaker 8: Who shot him?
- 3:15Speaker 9: I don't know.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I just heard the gunshocking, not what got up? And
- 3:18Speaker 2: he's rating in the door, okay.
- 3:21Speaker 5: And nobody saw anything prior to this.
- 3:24Speaker 2: No, he went through the demist somewhere and came home.
- 3:27Speaker 2: And I find that has a bunch of gunfire.
- 3:29Speaker 5: He's got a big kit.
- 3:30Speaker 2: He's don't have a free record, he works.
- 3:32Speaker 7: I don't the house.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Is there anybody in the house that can tell you
- 3:36Speaker 1: who shot him?
- 3:37Speaker 10: No, they don't know.
- 3:38Speaker 2: They were stretting and everybody in the house.
- 3:40Speaker 1: I go on, that's okay, we've got help headed that way.
- 3:44Speaker 11: Did they say if anybody was outside arguing with him
- 3:46Speaker 11: or anything? Part of me? Did he breathing?
- 3:52Speaker 2: I don't know. They want a man to get him mine.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Sharon's son, Ernest, had been in the living room when
- 3:58Speaker 1: Casey fell through the doorway. Casey's younger sister, seventeen year
- 4:02Speaker 1: old Janey, was in her room just down the hallway.
- 4:06Speaker 1: They collected the children and insisted that Sharon keep her
- 4:09Speaker 1: distance from the kitchen. From the back of the house,
- 4:12Speaker 1: the grandmother tried to explain to the operator what had occurred.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Did he say if he had like any disuse with anybody?
- 4:19Speaker 7: No, not so, I know.
- 4:21Speaker 2: I'm not aware anything.
- 4:22Speaker 11: Okay, what's your name and telephone number, ma'am Sharon time.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Do you know if he was dropped off by anyone.
- 4:30Speaker 2: No, he went to the damist in some way, he
- 4:32Speaker 2: dropping Mac. I don't know what happened. Okay, I don't
- 4:35Speaker 2: know What'll it off all right.
- 4:38Speaker 1: After emergency responders reached the house, Sharon Payne, overwhelmed and distressed,
- 4:44Speaker 1: fainted on the front steps. She was hospitalized for two days.
- 4:49Speaker 1: When Sharon awoke from her treatment, the first thing she
- 4:51Speaker 1: remembered was seeing her grandson gunned down and no longer conscious,
- 4:56Speaker 1: collapsed on her kitchen floor.
- 4:58Speaker 2: I heard the gunshot, but I didn't put together right
- 5:02Speaker 2: away that it was gunshots because I was so shocked.
- 5:05Speaker 2: This is the door he was coming in. Death beat
- 5:08Speaker 2: took the screen that he was shot when I saw
- 5:11Speaker 2: him he was laying here with three bulletholes in his back,
- 5:15Speaker 2: a big one in the middle of his shoulder blade.
- 5:19Speaker 2: I'll never forget what happened because I saw him on
- 5:21Speaker 2: the floor, and I saw the bulletholes in his back,
- 5:24Speaker 2: and that's something that I can't get out of my hand.
- 5:30Speaker 1: The Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Straight Team, known as so FAST,
- 5:35Speaker 1: is a law enforcement unit operated and supervised by the
- 5:38Speaker 1: US Marshall Service. It is made up of federal, state,
- 5:42Speaker 1: and local law enforcement officers. The purpose of the unit
- 5:46Speaker 1: is to locate and apprehend fugitives with active warrants for
- 5:50Speaker 1: their arrest. On the morning of December fourth, the US
- 5:54Speaker 1: Marshall's team had a warrant for the arrest of an
- 5:57Speaker 1: individual who lived on a State's Place just down the
- 6:00Speaker 1: road from Sharon Payne's house. The team was unsuccessful in
- 6:04Speaker 1: apprehending the fugitive they sought that morning he wasn't at home.
- 6:09Speaker 1: At around noon, the task force leader instructed the deputies
- 6:12Speaker 1: back to the office where they could regroup. So FAST
- 6:16Speaker 1: Officer Ryan Rosser was driving his unmarked US Marshall's truck
- 6:21Speaker 1: from a State's Place, turning left onto Ferris Road. He
- 6:25Speaker 1: followed the truck driven by another member of the task Force,
- 6:28Speaker 1: Franklin County Sheriff's Deputy Jason Mead, a full time member
- 6:32Speaker 1: of so FAST. Deputy Mead also drove an unmarked Marshall's truck.
- 6:38Speaker 1: The two vehicles proceeded down a short stretch on Ferris
- 6:41Speaker 1: Road before approaching the intersection with Carrol Road, where they
- 6:45Speaker 1: both slowed to a stop on a red light. When
- 6:49Speaker 1: it was time to proceed through the intersection, Rosser watched
- 6:52Speaker 1: as the truck ahead of him made his turn, only
- 6:55Speaker 1: to do a U turn and come straight back towards him.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Deputy Mead slowed as he past his teammate's truck with
- 7:01Speaker 1: the windows rolled down. He stated to Rosser in a panic,
- 7:05Speaker 1: We've got to go. He's got a gun. He's got
- 7:08Speaker 1: a gun, Ryan Rosser, You turned as well and followed
- 7:12Speaker 1: Deputy Mead back to a state's place in the direction
- 7:15Speaker 1: they had just come. But when they arrived, Mead did
- 7:19Speaker 1: not return to the house where they had executed the
- 7:22Speaker 1: warrant that morning. Instead, Rosser watched as his teammate parked,
- 7:29Speaker 1: jumped out of the cap of his truck, and ran
- 7:31Speaker 1: towards the tailgate. Jason Mead rapidly retrieved his gear. He
- 7:35Speaker 1: put on his bulletproof vest and grabbed his rifle. Jason
- 7:39Speaker 1: then indicated towards a man who had just gotten out
- 7:41Speaker 1: of a small black car up the street, the same
- 7:45Speaker 1: car that he had followed from the intersection. That's him,
- 7:49Speaker 1: Mead said. Before Rosser could gather his gear, Deputy Mead
- 7:53Speaker 1: had jumped back into his truck and driven further down
- 7:56Speaker 1: the road towards the man who was moving towards what
- 7:59Speaker 1: appeared to be the back of one of the houses.
- 8:02Speaker 1: The small car he drove, a Nissan Versa, was parked
- 8:05Speaker 1: on the wrong side of the road, and now, according
- 8:08Speaker 1: to Rosser, the suspect had picked up speed on foot
- 8:12Speaker 1: while he moved closer to the back of the house.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Officer Rosser, as well as neighbors on the road, heard
- 8:18Speaker 1: Jason Meade call out, show me your hands, show me
- 8:21Speaker 1: your hands. Then just moments later, shots were fired.
- 8:30Speaker 12: Came out, Yeah, Julie, as first go to the charger.
- 8:41Speaker 12: I was wandering.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Bodycam footage from responding local police caught the moments after
- 8:48Speaker 1: the shooting. At that time, the US Marshal Service were
- 8:52Speaker 1: in the early stages of rolling out a body warn
- 8:55Speaker 1: camera program to their task force units across the country.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Officer Rosser nor Deputy Mead wore a camera that day.
- 9:06Speaker 1: In the house, Casey's grandmother Sharon and sister Janey both
- 9:10Speaker 1: caught a glimpse of the aftermath in the kitchen before
- 9:13Speaker 1: they were ushered from the room and ultimately out of
- 9:15Speaker 1: the house by law enforcement. They saw CIJ face down
- 9:21Speaker 1: on the floor. When responding officers turned him over, seeking
- 9:25Speaker 1: to provide medical aid, they found Casey's handgun on the
- 9:29Speaker 1: floor under him. It was out of its holster, but
- 9:32Speaker 1: the safety remained on. CJ owned the gun legally, and
- 9:36Speaker 1: he had a concealed carried permit. Next to Casey was
- 9:40Speaker 1: a bag of subway sandwiches collected on his trip home
- 9:43Speaker 1: from the dentist, and his ears were an AirPod headset
- 9:47Speaker 1: borrowed from his younger sister, and the main door were
- 9:51Speaker 1: his set of keys. The secondary external storm door, with
- 9:55Speaker 1: a glass and metal mesh covering the top half, had
- 9:58Speaker 1: been shattered. Three gunshot holes were made through this external door.
- 10:04Speaker 1: There were six shell casings located next to the gate
- 10:07Speaker 1: leading to the side door. It was from this location
- 10:10Speaker 1: that Jason Meade had fired his rifle. The deputy, having
- 10:15Speaker 1: his weapon set to automatic, had pulled the trigger only once,
- 10:18Speaker 1: but that had the effect of firing six bullets. All
- 10:22Speaker 1: of these had found their target. C J sustained six
- 10:26Speaker 1: gunshot wounds, five to the torso and one in the buttocks.
- 10:30Speaker 1: All six entered from the back. Casey had not been
- 10:34Speaker 1: facing Jason Meade when the deputy fired. The shots had
- 10:39Speaker 1: been fatal. Despite US Marshall's rendering aid rapidly, it was
- 10:44Speaker 1: too late. An investigation into the shooting was launched. Casey
- 10:55Speaker 1: Goodson Junior was twenty three years old when he died.
- 10:59Speaker 1: After graduate was waiting from high school. CJ studied and
- 11:02Speaker 1: obtained his commercial driving license, and for a time he
- 11:06Speaker 1: took on a truck driving job, doing long haul trips
- 11:09Speaker 1: for a Walmart supplier. Casey loved it. It took him
- 11:13Speaker 1: from Ohio to California, but it also took him away
- 11:17Speaker 1: from his family. Earlier in the year, CJ's mother, Tamala,
- 11:21Speaker 1: gave birth prematurely to twins. After this, CJ moved back
- 11:26Speaker 1: home to Columbus and took a job working in a
- 11:28Speaker 1: warehouse to help contribute financially. He also lent a hand
- 11:32Speaker 1: with the new arrivals. Casey thought he would eventually return
- 11:36Speaker 1: to driving trucks, maybe even start his own company one day.
- 11:42Speaker 7: It's a Sidney, you know. He didn't live the hyper
- 11:45Speaker 7: lifestyle that you would even worry about him being shot
- 11:48Speaker 7: by anybody, let alone the police. He's never been in trouble.
- 11:52Speaker 7: Casey was a great kid every aspect. So from the beginning,
- 11:56Speaker 7: it's been my goal to show the world exactly who
- 11:59Speaker 7: case He.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Was, because he didn't do it. He didn't deserve to
- 12:02Speaker 2: be shop period, let alone killed. He's not that kind
- 12:05Speaker 2: of kid, and I'm sure they've found that out by now.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Deputy Jason Mead was a seventeen year veteran of the
- 12:14Speaker 1: Franklin County Sheriff's Department. In December twenty twenty, he was
- 12:18Speaker 1: a full time member of the so Fast Unit as
- 12:22Speaker 1: a reserved Marine. In two thousand and five, Jason was
- 12:25Speaker 1: deployed for a seven month tour of duty with Lima
- 12:28Speaker 1: Company in Iraq. After several years in the reserves, he
- 12:32Speaker 1: was honorably discharged from the US Marine Corps. Personally, Jason
- 12:37Speaker 1: is known as a man of faith and family. He
- 12:40Speaker 1: has been married for over twenty years to his high
- 12:42Speaker 1: school sweetheart, and they have two children together. Since twenty fourteen,
- 12:48Speaker 1: Jason Mead has also been pastor at Rosedale Freewill Baptist
- 12:52Speaker 1: Church in the community of Erwin in Madison County. It
- 12:56Speaker 1: has been described by his associate pastor as a little
- 12:59Speaker 1: country rechurch with about eighty congregants. It seems that for
- 13:04Speaker 1: many years Jason Meade had merged his religious beliefs with
- 13:08Speaker 1: his work in law enforcement. In a video series produced
- 13:11Speaker 1: by the Franklin County Sheriff's Office in twenty eighteen called
- 13:15Speaker 1: Connecting with the Community, Jason spoke of his service to
- 13:19Speaker 1: the public as Jesus was a servant to God.
- 13:23Speaker 4: You know, being a reverend and doing the police work.
- 13:30Speaker 4: How do you balance that right because of the work
- 13:33Speaker 4: that you have to do.
- 13:35Speaker 13: I can see where you would ask that question, because
- 13:37Speaker 13: I've dealt with this with a lot of believers on
- 13:40Speaker 13: this line of work, and there was this common thought
- 13:43Speaker 13: that was always presented to me that I leave my
- 13:45Speaker 13: Christianity at the door. I leave my Christianity at the door,
- 13:48Speaker 13: and I go, why the greatest servant that will ever
- 13:53Speaker 13: know of ever in the history of this world is
- 13:56Speaker 13: Jesus Christ, God's only son. He was the servant of
- 13:59Speaker 13: all servants.
- 14:00Speaker 14: What are we serve the public?
- 14:03Speaker 1: He also explained his understanding of the use of force
- 14:06Speaker 1: in his work. He calls it righteous release.
- 14:11Speaker 13: There is times for righteous release. That's what I call
- 14:14Speaker 13: it when we have a use of force, because every
- 14:17Speaker 13: now and then you have to actually use force. We
- 14:19Speaker 13: don't go around looking for it because we don't have to.
- 14:22Speaker 13: Plenty of people out there will give you that opportunity,
- 14:25Speaker 13: so we don't have to be boys going looking for it.
- 14:27Speaker 13: That's why I say it's a righteous release. There is
- 14:29Speaker 13: release in our job that righteously we can actually have
- 14:33Speaker 13: a use of force. And I've had people say, how
- 14:35Speaker 13: can you how can you heard some Jesus said to
- 14:37Speaker 13: turn the other check and I say, read your Bible.
- 14:39Speaker 13: He ain't talking about physically getting slapped in the side
- 14:42Speaker 13: of the face.
- 14:42Speaker 4: And you know, with this being in you, is that
- 14:45Speaker 4: you know when you do have to wrest somebody or
- 14:48Speaker 4: it is it is it is not something that's that
- 14:51Speaker 4: that you would go overboard or you know. The thing
- 14:55Speaker 4: is is that you want to take care of this
- 14:57Speaker 4: but also to be as compassion as possible. Yes, empathy
- 15:01Speaker 4: for what wow. Faith, family and service. Now that's what
- 15:05Speaker 4: it's all about. So we appreciate you, the viewing audience,
- 15:08Speaker 4: for being a part of this great conversation.
- 15:13Speaker 1: In the same year, Jason spoke at the convention for
- 15:16Speaker 1: Ohio Free Will Baptists. Here he spoke about the story
- 15:20Speaker 1: of David and Goliath and how he was justified in
- 15:24Speaker 1: throwing the first punch.
- 15:31Speaker 13: You know David did, he threw the first punch. He
- 15:34Speaker 13: threw the first punch. Didn't I all this to throw
- 15:36Speaker 13: the first punch? You say what, I don't know. Let
- 15:39Speaker 13: me tell you something I meant. I worked for the
- 15:41Speaker 13: Sheriff's office down Franklin County, Columbus. I'm working on a
- 15:43Speaker 13: tactle swat team and I also worked for US Marshall's
- 15:46Speaker 13: task Force.
- 15:47Speaker 14: I hunt people. It's a great job. I love it.
- 15:51Speaker 13: I've worked as job fourteen years and now I never
- 15:53Speaker 13: been hit clean in the face one time.
- 15:55Speaker 7: It's a fact.
- 15:55Speaker 13: And because I'm so good, I ain't bad. But I
- 15:57Speaker 13: ain't because I'm so good. You know why, Because I
- 16:01Speaker 13: learned long ago I gotta throw the first punch. And
- 16:04Speaker 13: I learned a long ago. Why I'm justified and throwing
- 16:06Speaker 13: the first punch. Don't look up here like oh. Police
- 16:08Speaker 13: were telling people I hit you wish you could hit
- 16:10Speaker 13: trust me, right, Yeah, you throw a punch and the
- 16:22Speaker 13: pursuit will follow.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Jason continued to explain how the use of force and
- 16:30Speaker 1: law enforcement is a reminder that there is a God
- 16:33Speaker 1: in heaven. He describes the emotions as contagious and references
- 16:38Speaker 1: the unity it brings the team.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Unity.
- 16:43Speaker 15: They arose, this is gonna bother some of you and shouted.
- 16:51Speaker 13: And pursued the philistines. Anybody will put the devil on
- 16:57Speaker 13: a run. My favorite part is when the devil gets
- 17:02Speaker 13: put on the run. And let me tell you why.
- 17:05Speaker 13: Look what keeps going. They pursued.
- 17:10Speaker 15: The punch was thrown, the damage was dealt, the champion fell,
- 17:16Speaker 15: the enemy ran. Now this army is full of courage.
- 17:20Speaker 15: They're reminded of the promise. They're reminded of the anointing.
- 17:24Speaker 15: They're reminded there's a God in heaven. They're reminded that
- 17:28Speaker 15: there is victory in Jesus. They run after them, and
- 17:33Speaker 15: they chased them off.
- 17:36Speaker 13: Today, somebody needs to throw the first punch. David was
- 17:39Speaker 13: the first one to do it, and then will happen.
- 17:40Speaker 14: Everybody follows.
- 17:41Speaker 15: I tell you it's contagious.
- 17:44Speaker 13: One of my swat guys throws a punch. I gotta
- 17:46Speaker 13: throw win in two.
- 17:48Speaker 6: It's the truth.
- 17:49Speaker 13: We have this little saying, Hey, if you're wanna get trouble,
- 17:51Speaker 13: I'm gonna get in trouble too. You get days off,
- 17:53Speaker 13: I get days off.
- 17:54Speaker 15: Two We'll make a vacation out of it.
- 18:01Speaker 1: On June thirteen, twenty eighteen, shortly before the video was
- 18:04Speaker 1: posted by the Sheriff's Office, Deputy Mead was among seven
- 18:08Speaker 1: officers who fired their weapons during a standoff in Pike
- 18:12Speaker 1: County that ended with two men dead. In that case,
- 18:16Speaker 1: Deputy Mead was part of a SWAT team called in
- 18:19Speaker 1: to execute a warrant for a forty four year old
- 18:21Speaker 1: man named David Arthur. David was wanted for drug possession
- 18:25Speaker 1: and was thought to be armed. He was located at
- 18:28Speaker 1: his friend's home, a man named Barry Leith in Pike County.
- 18:33Speaker 1: A negotiator tried unsuccessfully to lure David from the home
- 18:37Speaker 1: for hours. Eventually, the Franklin County swat team was called in.
- 18:42Speaker 1: They used a hydraulic ram attached to one of two
- 18:45Speaker 1: bear Cat armored vehicles to begin tearing holes in the house.
- 18:50Speaker 1: The team spent two hours ramming the building and estimated
- 18:53Speaker 1: twenty times before finally, seeing no movement inside, decided to enter.
- 19:00Speaker 1: The suspect was found on the living room floor, sitting
- 19:03Speaker 1: with his back against the sofa. The deputy said that
- 19:06Speaker 1: he appeared uninjured. Those in the room all stated that
- 19:11Speaker 1: he had raised his gun towards them. Then at least
- 19:14Speaker 1: three SWAP members opened fire, including Deputy Mead, striking him
- 19:18Speaker 1: in the chest, head and neck. David's friend Larry was
- 19:23Speaker 1: later found deceased under the rubble in the living room.
- 19:26Speaker 1: He had been shot by Arthur hours earlier. An investigation
- 19:30Speaker 1: of the shooting, which included at least five detectives from
- 19:34Speaker 1: Franklin County, found none of the shooters to be at
- 19:37Speaker 1: fault for David's death. However, an autopsy on David Arthur
- 19:42Speaker 1: found that he was likely dead for hours before the
- 19:45Speaker 1: SWAT team even entered the house. The medical examiner found
- 19:50Speaker 1: that a single self inflicted gunshot to the head, delivered
- 19:54Speaker 1: roughly two hours earlier, when shots were heard from their
- 19:57Speaker 1: position outside, would have been fatal. Nonetheless, in the immediate
- 20:02Speaker 1: aftermath of the shooting, the deputies stated that after firing
- 20:05Speaker 1: several rounds at David, all of a sudden, the suspect
- 20:09Speaker 1: gasped for air, opened his eyes, and instantly leveled his
- 20:13Speaker 1: pistol and pointed it directly at Deputy Mead. At that point, Jason,
- 20:19Speaker 1: Mead and two other deputies again opened fire, even though
- 20:24Speaker 1: it was later determined that it was extremely unlikely that
- 20:27Speaker 1: David was alive incapable of pointing his weapon at the deputies.
- 20:32Speaker 1: The investigation reasoned that under the circumstances, the involved deputies
- 20:37Speaker 1: acted appropriately to stop the threat posed by David Arthur.
- 20:44Speaker 1: The twenty eighteen incident was not the only time that
- 20:47Speaker 1: Deputy Mead found himself in hot water due to his
- 20:50Speaker 1: actions on the job. In twenty nineteen, a year after
- 20:54Speaker 1: the death of David Arthur, Jason was issued a reprimand
- 20:57Speaker 1: for inappropriate use of his taser on Assie Aspect and
- 21:01Speaker 1: failure to report using it. As the deputy's history was
- 21:05Speaker 1: slowly uncovered and it leaked to the media, the pressure
- 21:08Speaker 1: and controversy surrounding Casey Goodson's death reached new heights in
- 21:14Speaker 1: the days, weeks and months after the shooting, with an
- 21:17Speaker 1: investigation ongoing protesters attended the Sunday service at Jason Mead's church,
- 21:23Speaker 1: calling the pastor a killer. The associate pastor, Paul Moore
- 21:27Speaker 1: told them that they were welcome, but not if they
- 21:30Speaker 1: were going to be disruptive.
- 21:41Speaker 8: But I can't, adding that now.
- 21:52Speaker 3: There's two sides to every story.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Jason Meade was not giving the sermon that week, concerned
- 22:03Speaker 1: for his own safety. The deputy was at home. He
- 22:06Speaker 1: had left his work as well, initially being released unpaid leave,
- 22:10Speaker 1: and then eventually as the investigation dragged on over several months,
- 22:14Speaker 1: taking an early retirement from the Sheriff's office and so
- 22:18Speaker 1: fast faced with an officer involved shooting and a potential
- 22:24Speaker 1: conflict of interest, the Columbus Police had requested that the
- 22:27Speaker 1: Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation take over the case. They refused.
- 22:33Speaker 1: The BCI released a statement explaining that a full three
- 22:36Speaker 1: days had passed before the request was made to them
- 22:40Speaker 1: to take over and no explanation had been provided that
- 22:43Speaker 1: would account for this delay. Due to this ambiguity, they
- 22:47Speaker 1: declined the case. It was eventually given to the Department
- 22:51Speaker 1: of Justice. That investigation has been praised even by Casey's mother,
- 22:57Speaker 1: Tamla as thorough and thoughtful, but the investigative process was
- 23:02Speaker 1: a slow one. As the criminal case was built against
- 23:08Speaker 1: Deputy Mead. Two special prosecutors, both formerly state attorneys, were
- 23:13Speaker 1: given the task of presenting an indictment. Roughly one year
- 23:18Speaker 1: after the shooting, Deputy Mead was charged with murder. In
- 23:22Speaker 1: December twenty twenty one, Jason Mead was released on a
- 23:26Speaker 1: two hundred and fifty thousand dollars bond as he awaited trial.
- 23:32Speaker 2: This was an.
- 23:32Speaker 7: Amazing investigation down by the dj This was hours to
- 23:38Speaker 7: put in spent in.
- 23:39Speaker 5: Jason me will be held accountable and Casey's death, and
- 23:43Speaker 5: that accountability will lead to justice, brothers. In addition to
- 23:47Speaker 5: the criminal indictment that has been handed down today, we've
- 23:51Speaker 5: also filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Jason Mead
- 23:56Speaker 5: in Franklin County. Obviously, we know what Jason meads liability
- 24:00Speaker 5: is here. He was an individual that targeted, pursued, and
- 24:07Speaker 5: shot and killed Casey from behind walking into his own home,
- 24:12Speaker 5: but Franklin County is also liable for Jason Mean's actions.
- 24:20Speaker 1: The civil suit alleged that Jason Mead's behavior and prior
- 24:23Speaker 1: documented incidents made him a ticking time bomb. The lawsuit
- 24:28Speaker 1: asserts that Franklin County failed to sufficiently supervise, investigate, discipline, counsel,
- 24:34Speaker 1: and or train the deputy. It refers to his views
- 24:38Speaker 1: on religion and the use of force, referring to Jason
- 24:41Speaker 1: as seemingly a religious zealot and holding viewpoints that county
- 24:46Speaker 1: law enforcement were aware of and that are problematic. In addition,
- 24:51Speaker 1: the lack of training provided to Jason in any area
- 24:54Speaker 1: outside of firearms is a key point in the filing.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Year after year, eighty to ninety hours of courses were
- 25:02Speaker 1: provided to Deputy Mead, covering topics such as active shooters, marksmanship,
- 25:07Speaker 1: and rifle pistol training, but none that focused on ethics.
- 25:12Speaker 1: The last training on de escalation that Jason received was
- 25:16Speaker 1: in twenty fourteen, when he reported completing the course in
- 25:20Speaker 1: under four minutes. Another course, listed as a full day
- 25:25Speaker 1: program stretching from eight a m. To four pm, entitled
- 25:28Speaker 1: Victims with Special Needs, was completed online in one minute
- 25:33Speaker 1: and sixteen seconds. Jason Meade could not be deposed for
- 25:39Speaker 1: the civil suit until after the criminal trial. Nonetheless, Jason's
- 25:44Speaker 1: version of events and the basis of his defense emerged
- 25:48Speaker 1: through his lawyer. The deputy said that he witnessed c J.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Goodman aiming his gun towards another car on the road
- 25:54Speaker 1: as the twenty three year old waited to take a
- 25:57Speaker 1: left through the intersection at Ferris and Hurl Road on
- 26:00Speaker 1: December fourth. Then, after making his turn, CJ. Pointed his
- 26:05Speaker 1: gun directly at Deputy Mead as their vehicles past each
- 26:09Speaker 1: other performing a U turn. The deputy pursued Casey back
- 26:13Speaker 1: to his house. Once parked on the wrong side of
- 26:16Speaker 1: the road, Casey ran for Mead towards the back of
- 26:19Speaker 1: a house at the threshold of the door and with
- 26:23Speaker 1: his back still turned. Jason said that he raised his
- 26:26Speaker 1: gun at the deputy once more. Upon seeing that threat,
- 26:30Speaker 1: he fired, and as.
- 26:33Speaker 14: He was heading back to their headquarters, witnessed a young
- 26:37Speaker 14: man waving a gun at an intersection. The gun was
- 26:40Speaker 14: tracking people that were coming across that individual's direction. Saw
- 26:45Speaker 14: the young man get out of the car. He had
- 26:47Speaker 14: a plastic bag in his left hand and he had
- 26:49Speaker 14: the gun in his right hand. The young man turned
- 26:51Speaker 14: and looked at Jason Mead. At that point in time,
- 26:54Speaker 14: two other US Marshal's task force pulled up. Jason indicated
- 26:57Speaker 14: that's the guy that's the guy. At that point, I'm
- 27:00Speaker 14: the gentleman. Mister Goodson turned and the gun was pointed
- 27:03Speaker 14: to my client. My client jumped to the left and
- 27:05Speaker 14: fired at mister Goodson. It's a proper use of force,
- 27:09Speaker 14: and he had to make a split second decision, and
- 27:11Speaker 14: based on the non compliance and based on the gun
- 27:13Speaker 14: pointing back to him, he thought that there was no
- 27:17Speaker 14: other option. He had to use lethal force.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Jason Meads to trial in early twenty twenty four. He
- 27:23Speaker 1: faced two counts of murder and one of reckless homicide.
- 27:28Speaker 1: In a case where an officer's use of force is questionable,
- 27:31Speaker 1: the law says that jurors are only meant to evaluate
- 27:34Speaker 1: what that officer knew or could have reasonably believed in
- 27:38Speaker 1: making their decision to act. This effectively means that the
- 27:41Speaker 1: reality of the situation, whether Casey Goodson intended to evade arrest,
- 27:47Speaker 1: shoot another driver, or fire his gun at the deputy,
- 27:50Speaker 1: is second to what Jason Mead perceived was likely at
- 27:54Speaker 1: the time.
- 27:57Speaker 9: On December fourth, twenty twenty, a person was seen waving
- 28:01Speaker 9: a firearm in a Nissan Versa. He pointed that same
- 28:05Speaker 9: firearm at Jason Mead, an on duty police officer while
- 28:09Speaker 9: Jason was in his unmarked vehicle. Jason has a duty
- 28:14Speaker 9: to investigate.
- 28:15Speaker 2: This type of behavior.
- 28:17Speaker 9: This man has a weapon, he ran away from him,
- 28:21Speaker 9: and he's trying to get into a house. He's screaming,
- 28:27Speaker 9: drop the weapon, drop the weapon. The gunman never drops
- 28:31Speaker 9: the weapon. Instead, as that gunman is trying to get
- 28:36Speaker 9: into this house, he turns and points a weapon at Jason,
- 28:40Speaker 9: and in that split second, Jason.
- 28:42Speaker 11: Believes he's going to be shot.
- 28:44Speaker 9: Because he sees the gunpoint at him for a second time,
- 28:49Speaker 9: and Jason shoots.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Sharon Payne told the jury that Casey often carried his
- 28:57Speaker 1: handgun with him. He held it in a holster in
- 28:59Speaker 1: the of his waistband. This was an uncomfortable location when driving,
- 29:04Speaker 1: she assumed, and so she observed that when Casey drove
- 29:07Speaker 1: her anywhere, he would remove the gun and place it
- 29:10Speaker 1: in the front center console of the car. Jason's defense
- 29:14Speaker 1: team presented a photo of CJ posed with his handgun
- 29:17Speaker 1: pointing it at the camera. It was taken in the
- 29:21Speaker 1: driver's seat of the Nissan Versa. Jason Meade took the
- 29:28Speaker 1: stand to tell his version of events that day. Jason
- 29:31Speaker 1: had previously signed a statement which alleged that CIJ had
- 29:35Speaker 1: tracked another vehicle through the intersection with a gun pointing
- 29:39Speaker 1: it at the car while he waited to make his turn.
- 29:43Speaker 1: Once confronted with the video, which showed Casey making a
- 29:46Speaker 1: continuous left turn without pausing, the deputy altered this testimony.
- 29:52Speaker 1: He said instead that CJ was pointing the gun around erratically.
- 29:56Speaker 1: He pointed it at another vehicle after completing his turn.
- 30:01Speaker 8: Uh.
- 30:01Speaker 13: As soon as I pulled up to the intersection, it's
- 30:04Speaker 13: a red light, and I happen to looked to the right,
- 30:06Speaker 13: and I seen a vehicle approaching from the north. There
- 30:09Speaker 13: was a dark colored Uh look what looked like maybe
- 30:11Speaker 13: a hatchback. And as it was approaching, what caught my
- 30:14Speaker 13: eye As I saw movement in the window as it
- 30:18Speaker 13: was approaching, as it got closer, I realized, somebody's who
- 30:22Speaker 13: the document who's driving the car is got a gun
- 30:25Speaker 13: in his hand.
- 30:26Speaker 12: And how did you describe a gentleman for what you said? Movement?
- 30:30Speaker 12: How was what movement? Did you do you remember saying?
- 30:33Speaker 13: I saw a movement almost like it was pumping like
- 30:36Speaker 13: this toward the front to the windshield. I aired on
- 30:40Speaker 13: the radio immediately to my team on the US Marshall's channel,
- 30:43Speaker 13: exactly what I.
- 30:44Speaker 12: Had seen, ladies and Nola drew what what do you
- 30:47Speaker 12: remember saying?
- 30:48Speaker 13: Uh, where's the effect of? Hey, guys, I'm at the
- 30:50Speaker 13: intersection here at Carl and Ferris, and I've got a
- 30:52Speaker 13: guy waving a gun.
- 30:54Speaker 12: Is a criminal offence to be waving a gun and
- 30:56Speaker 12: pointing at somebody?
- 30:57Speaker 13: Yes, where are you going to pursue him? Because I
- 31:01Speaker 13: don't know what his intentions are at this point. He
- 31:03Speaker 13: just pointed a gun at me. I have no idea
- 31:05Speaker 13: where he came from or what he's going to and
- 31:07Speaker 13: it's my lawful duty to investigate.
- 31:09Speaker 12: In terms of a threat. Is a person with a
- 31:11Speaker 12: gun waving it and pointing a threat? Is it something
- 31:14Speaker 12: that you're obligated so that you have to go forward
- 31:17Speaker 12: and investigate?
- 31:18Speaker 5: Yes, it is.
- 31:19Speaker 13: When he got out of the car, I saw him
- 31:21Speaker 13: get out of the car. He had a plastic bag
- 31:23Speaker 13: in one hand, and I believe it was in his
- 31:24Speaker 13: left hand, and then in his right hand he still
- 31:26Speaker 13: had the gun.
- 31:27Speaker 12: Did he see you?
- 31:28Speaker 11: Yes?
- 31:30Speaker 13: Yeah, So I'm facing him in between my truck and
- 31:33Speaker 13: Roster's truck, and I had already got my best on
- 31:36Speaker 13: and I actually point and I say, hey, there he is.
- 31:40Speaker 13: And through the discourse, I said, the guy with the gun,
- 31:42Speaker 13: and he has the gun in his hand right now,
- 31:45Speaker 13: he saw me and he turned and he took off
- 31:48Speaker 13: the other direction, right.
- 31:51Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 31:52Speaker 12: What does that mean to you at that point in time?
- 31:54Speaker 12: What goes through your mind based on your training and experience.
- 31:58Speaker 13: That the suspect is trying to flee in the loud
- 32:01Speaker 13: and police officers side of him. So by the time
- 32:04Speaker 13: I get I jumped in the truck because I grabbed
- 32:05Speaker 13: my rifle, which was in the back seat. I grabbed
- 32:08Speaker 13: my rifle and pulled the sling over my head and
- 32:11Speaker 13: I jumped into the driver's seat of the truck, closed
- 32:14Speaker 13: the door, and I took off. By that time, I'd
- 32:15Speaker 13: already lost sight of him, and I saw was he
- 32:18Speaker 13: I lost sight of him because I saw him duck
- 32:20Speaker 13: in behind a house behind the house a house, yeah,
- 32:24Speaker 13: the house.
- 32:25Speaker 14: No.
- 32:26Speaker 13: So when he took off from this house, he bypassed
- 32:28Speaker 13: all front doors and then cut in behind a fence.
- 32:32Speaker 12: So you get up to the area where the exhibit
- 32:35Speaker 12: was with your car, what do you see?
- 32:36Speaker 13: So once I pulled up to where my you saw
- 32:38Speaker 13: in the picture where.
- 32:39Speaker 14: My truck stopped.
- 32:40Speaker 13: I stopped because I could actually see the suspect opening
- 32:43Speaker 13: the store door and getting in, looking like going into
- 32:46Speaker 13: a side door of a house.
- 32:47Speaker 12: Why is that? Why is that a thrut chase?
- 32:50Speaker 13: Uh, he's an armed suspect. I don't know where he's
- 32:54Speaker 13: come from. I don't know who's home this is. I
- 32:56Speaker 13: don't know what he's going to do. All I know
- 32:57Speaker 13: is he just pointed a gun at me, and now
- 32:59Speaker 13: he's running from me. After he had stopped, I give
- 33:03Speaker 13: him more commands again, at which point he made a
- 33:05Speaker 13: turn and pointed a gun back toward me.
- 33:07Speaker 12: What did you do?
- 33:09Speaker 13: I stepped to the left and I shot him. Wow,
- 33:13Speaker 13: Because he pointed his gun at me, I thought I
- 33:14Speaker 13: was going to die, back towards back to me, and
- 33:17Speaker 13: then he made a turn like this, bringing the gun up.
- 33:19Speaker 16: And pointed it back to me.
- 33:21Speaker 12: What went through your mind when you saw that gun?
- 33:26Speaker 13: I thought I thought he was going to shoot me.
- 33:29Speaker 13: I'm thinking I don't want to die, no very reason
- 33:32Speaker 13: I thought. I never thought I was going to have
- 33:34Speaker 13: to shoot him. I thought he was going to give up,
- 33:40Speaker 13: and he didn't.
- 33:44Speaker 1: There was some confusion as to how far away the
- 33:46Speaker 1: deputy was standing from Casey on a state's place when
- 33:50Speaker 1: they looked at each other, As Adjason testified, at first,
- 33:54Speaker 1: he estimated it was maybe two houses away. Later he
- 33:57Speaker 1: said it could have been closer to six house links
- 34:00Speaker 1: between them. Prosecutors also grilled Adjason over the alternative steps
- 34:05Speaker 1: that he could have taken to identify himself, particularly given
- 34:08Speaker 1: the fact that CJ was found with air pods in
- 34:11Speaker 1: his ears when he died. Was it possible that he
- 34:14Speaker 1: was unaware that the deputy was there and yelling commands
- 34:18Speaker 1: at him.
- 34:19Speaker 11: Another conclusion, But he didn't hear you, and that's why
- 34:25Speaker 11: he did.
- 34:27Speaker 13: Fur No, catcher, you're asking me in this case, not
- 34:31Speaker 13: in this case.
- 34:32Speaker 11: No, sir, there's not two conclusions you can draw on this.
- 34:36Speaker 12: For him not to turn around.
- 34:37Speaker 13: No, because I know he knew I was there.
- 34:41Speaker 3: If you're aware he got in his court room that
- 34:45Speaker 3: he had air pods in correct, I never saw Okay,
- 34:50Speaker 3: I didn't ask you that you're aware that he had
- 34:53Speaker 3: air pods?
- 34:53Speaker 12: In correct?
- 34:55Speaker 13: Yes, Well, I'm sorry.
- 34:59Speaker 12: You want to identify who you are?
- 35:00Speaker 11: Once't you put your lights on?
- 35:03Speaker 12: No, I wouldn't put your lights on. You're a law
- 35:06Speaker 12: enforcement officer. You don't use your lights.
- 35:08Speaker 13: He turned and he ran away from me. I jumped
- 35:11Speaker 13: in my truck and I followed after him to check
- 35:13Speaker 13: upus the other.
- 35:13Speaker 12: Tools that you got.
- 35:14Speaker 11: How about a siren? Did you turn the siren on.
- 35:19Speaker 13: Mister me No, I did not turn my siren on.
- 35:21Speaker 11: That would certainly identify you.
- 35:23Speaker 13: Would I don't know how I could identify myself any
- 35:28Speaker 13: better than what I had done. It happened so fast
- 35:31Speaker 13: that I responded as fast as I could to the
- 35:33Speaker 13: actions that he was doing.
- 35:35Speaker 1: That CJ parked improperly with suspicious to Deputy Mead. Family
- 35:40Speaker 1: members testified that due to a fire hydrant on the
- 35:43Speaker 1: other side of the street, they had parked on the
- 35:45Speaker 1: opposite side for years without issue. Similarly, the front door
- 35:50Speaker 1: was slightly broken, so they never used it, preferring the
- 35:54Speaker 1: side entrance as their regular way in and out of
- 35:56Speaker 1: the house. Of course, there was no way that W. D.
- 36:00Speaker 1: Mead could have known these facts.
- 36:03Speaker 13: He had actually park in front of it, or not
- 36:05Speaker 13: in front of it, But Caddy Corner took it the
- 36:07Speaker 13: wrong way, which gave me I don't understand why he
- 36:10Speaker 13: parked the wrong way, and then he bypassed the entire
- 36:13Speaker 13: front of the house. And then cut in an open gate. Okay, well,
- 36:18Speaker 13: that made me believe that this wasn't his.
- 36:20Speaker 14: Place at all.
- 36:26Speaker 1: After both the state and the defense closed their case,
- 36:30Speaker 1: the trial had an unusual development. The prosecution asked to
- 36:34Speaker 1: call upon a newly discovered surprise witness. This witness, a
- 36:40Speaker 1: man named Christopher Corn worked in heating and cooling. He
- 36:44Speaker 1: was watching the coverage of the trial at home on
- 36:46Speaker 1: the local news when he realized that the video of
- 36:49Speaker 1: the intersection showed his van. On December fourth, the HVAC
- 36:54Speaker 1: employee was on his lunch break between jobs. He recalled
- 36:57Speaker 1: the events of the day clearly. In the video of
- 37:01Speaker 1: the US Marshall's trucks approaching the intersection. A white work
- 37:05Speaker 1: van drives past a state's place where Officer Ryan Rosser
- 37:08Speaker 1: waited to pull out. The van then takes a position
- 37:12Speaker 1: behind Jason Meads truck when they reached the red light.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Rosser then makes his turn and is directly behind Christopher
- 37:19Speaker 1: in the white van. Christopher's position in that left turning lane,
- 37:23Speaker 1: as well as the height of his van, gave him
- 37:25Speaker 1: a view directly into CJ's car at the exact time
- 37:29Speaker 1: that the deputy alleged that he was aiming his gun
- 37:32Speaker 1: around at traffic. Christopher took the stand for the prosecution.
- 37:38Speaker 1: He testified that the only thing that concerned him about
- 37:41Speaker 1: passing Casey Goodson on the road that day was his driving.
- 37:45Speaker 1: He did not see a gun.
- 37:48Speaker 8: So I was sitting at the intersection of Carl and Ferris.
- 37:53Speaker 8: I noticed a car come around the corner and the
- 37:55Speaker 8: person was driving a little erratic. What appeared to be
- 37:59Speaker 8: dancing in his car and singing with music. I just
- 38:04Speaker 8: noticed a driver moving around pretty erratic, and at one
- 38:08Speaker 8: point in time he took both hands off the wheel
- 38:10Speaker 8: and was dancing and moving, and it looked like he
- 38:14Speaker 8: was going to come into my vehicle.
- 38:17Speaker 1: How could you see his hands?
- 38:19Speaker 8: Pretty good?
- 38:20Speaker 1: Could you see anything in his hands at all?
- 38:22Speaker 8: No, nothing at all? Was anything about this car and
- 38:27Speaker 8: the individual driving the car?
- 38:28Speaker 1: Did anything about that cause you concern?
- 38:32Speaker 5: Yes?
- 38:32Speaker 8: I thought he was driving recklessly.
- 38:35Speaker 12: Were there any other vehicles that caught your attention at
- 38:37Speaker 12: the intersection?
- 38:38Speaker 8: There was a pickup truck in front of me when
- 38:42Speaker 8: I noticed, you know, after the car had passed and
- 38:44Speaker 8: made its way down the road, he started making a
- 38:48Speaker 8: U turn in the intersection.
- 38:51Speaker 1: Christopher's testimony was called into question by the defense attorneys.
- 38:55Speaker 1: Not only had he waited years to come forward, but
- 38:58Speaker 1: he had also watched portions of the trial on the
- 39:01Speaker 1: news before testifying, something that could influence his recollection of
- 39:05Speaker 1: the day. It turns out that Christopher had also not
- 39:09Speaker 1: reached out to the special prosecutors or law enforcement in
- 39:13Speaker 1: an appropriate, unbiased way. He at first attempted to contact
- 39:18Speaker 1: Tamla Paine, directly friending her on Facebook and sending a
- 39:22Speaker 1: private message. When she did not respond, he contacted Sean Walton,
- 39:28Speaker 1: their family attorney. Christopher testified that neither responded to him,
- 39:33Speaker 1: but that after writing to mister Walton, he heard directly
- 39:36Speaker 1: from the special prosecutors. This cannot be verified, however, because
- 39:41Speaker 1: only two days after coming forward his name was leaked
- 39:44Speaker 1: to the press. Christopher found himself overwhelmed with messages on Facebook,
- 39:49Speaker 1: and so he deleted his entire account. What messages were
- 39:54Speaker 1: sent or exchanged about his testimony is therefore unclear. To
- 39:59Speaker 1: Jason Mead's defense team, these actions were suspicious and worthy
- 40:03Speaker 1: of discrediting him as a witness.
- 40:07Speaker 16: Well, he was unique because you got an instruction before
- 40:11Speaker 16: he testified that doesn't normally happen. There's a separational witnesses.
- 40:16Speaker 16: You got an instruction because he's watched the trial.
- 40:18Speaker 12: He's watched sel Stedberg, he's watched our client, he's watched
- 40:21Speaker 12: the news, he's watched everything. It would be like taking
- 40:23Speaker 12: someone in the back of the courtroom and plucking them
- 40:25Speaker 12: and say, hey, what'd you see that day? That's how
- 40:28Speaker 12: desperate they are.
- 40:29Speaker 14: That's their witness someone with Jason meets training, someone who's
- 40:34Speaker 14: honorable discharged from the Marines, who you.
- 40:37Speaker 6: Don't get honorable discharts and Marines. If you delete stuff,
- 40:39Speaker 6: you don't get it. You don't get honorable distarts if
- 40:42Speaker 6: you lie. But he airs and says it. But their
- 40:45Speaker 6: theory is he didn't see it.
- 40:47Speaker 12: It's a cover up.
- 40:49Speaker 14: Jason Mead puts you inside of his shoes and his
- 40:52Speaker 14: testimony lass home. Nothing in the jury instructions will say
- 40:57Speaker 14: here to do it. From Casey Goodson's perspect what was
- 41:00Speaker 14: his intent?
- 41:01Speaker 12: What was this? What was this?
- 41:03Speaker 11: There's not a single witness to corroborate the defendant's assertion
- 41:08Speaker 11: that Casey pointed a gun at him at the intersection,
- 41:12Speaker 11: nor at the house, neither place. It's just his work.
- 41:20Speaker 1: The trial went over the estimated time allotted for witness testimony.
- 41:24Speaker 1: Lasting eleven full days over three weeks, the jury heard
- 41:28Speaker 1: from over twenty witnesses. Three times. After deliberations began, the
- 41:33Speaker 1: jury was required to restart after the judge dismissed a
- 41:37Speaker 1: juror and replace them with an alternate, in an exceptional
- 41:41Speaker 1: move that is rarely necessary. All four alternate jurors were
- 41:46Speaker 1: eventually used, as others were dismissed for undisclosed reasons. At
- 41:51Speaker 1: one point, the judge declared a mistrial after the jury
- 41:54Speaker 1: continued to pose questions that demonstrated confusion over how to
- 41:59Speaker 1: apply the law. They queried whether Jason Meade could be
- 42:02Speaker 1: justified in using force on one count of murder but
- 42:05Speaker 1: not another, which the judge deemed a logical If the
- 42:10Speaker 1: deputy was found to be justified in firing his weapon,
- 42:14Speaker 1: he must be found not guilty on all charges. After
- 42:19Speaker 1: speaking with prosecutors in defense, Judge Young reversed the mistrial
- 42:23Speaker 1: only minutes after he declared it and instead ordered the
- 42:27Speaker 1: jury to continue deliberations. They did so, but it was
- 42:32Speaker 1: hopeless they could not reach an agreement.
- 42:36Speaker 17: Minutes later, Judge Young retracted the mistrial, commending the jurors
- 42:40Speaker 17: for their hard work, on the case and told them
- 42:42Speaker 17: to keep deliberating.
- 42:43Speaker 1: Two hours later, jurors.
- 42:45Speaker 17: Then came back saying they couldn't agree, at which point
- 42:48Speaker 17: the judge invoked the Howard charge, asking them to keep
- 42:51Speaker 17: trying to come to a unanimous decision, But fifteen minutes later,
- 42:55Speaker 17: the final mistrial was declared due to a hung jury.
- 42:59Speaker 1: Journalists the courtroom reported that jurors returned with tears in
- 43:03Speaker 1: their eyes, many agonizing over the decision and frustrated that
- 43:07Speaker 1: they could not reach a verdict.
- 43:12Speaker 5: Jason Me was the only person that accused Casey of
- 43:15Speaker 5: rondoing he took his life and here we are. But
- 43:18Speaker 5: again I stressed that he was not acquitted. There were
- 43:20Speaker 5: jurors back there that did not believe him, and we're
- 43:22Speaker 5: not sure you know why it was hung. It could
- 43:25Speaker 5: be that they didn't think that there was enough to convict.
- 43:27Speaker 5: But I don't think anybody here in this courthouse, aside
- 43:31Speaker 5: from Jason Me, thinks that he's in this. I think
- 43:33Speaker 5: the prosecutor a great job showing that Jason me state
- 43:36Speaker 5: of mind was that he throws the first punch, he
- 43:39Speaker 5: hunts people, and that he is justified in doing that,
- 43:42Speaker 5: that he has a righteous release. You know when he does,
- 43:46Speaker 5: you know, commit an active force while he is on
- 43:48Speaker 5: the job. So I'm thankful that he's no longer a
- 43:51Speaker 5: SHARE's deputy, but he needs to be behind bars.
- 43:54Speaker 1: Jason did not make a statement following the mistrial. His
- 43:58Speaker 1: attorney stated only that he was extremely appreciative of the
- 44:01Speaker 1: hard work done by the jury, who did exactly what
- 44:04Speaker 1: was required of them. They had tried their best. The
- 44:09Speaker 1: civil lawsuit is still pending and will now move forward.
- 44:13Speaker 1: The special prosecutors have also stated their intention to retry
- 44:16Speaker 1: the deputy for murder. As of publication, the retrial is
- 44:22Speaker 1: set to begin on October thirty first, twenty twenty four.
- 44:27Speaker 1: Jury selection and testimony is scheduled to start November fourth.
- 44:34Speaker 1: And that was the tragic case of Casey Goodson, Junior
- 44:38Speaker 1: in Deputy Jason Meade. Thanks for watching, and a special
- 44:42Speaker 1: thanks to our newest Lounge members Hitchcock Hitchcock, Karen Cook,
- 44:47Speaker 1: and Jason Coward. I'm Kevin. This is just thought Lounge
- 44:52Speaker 1: and I'll see in the next one.
- 44:53Speaker 10: Please tell me I can hit the crist repeat. Gotta
- 44:56Speaker 10: take my time because these crimes get deep, but these
- 44:58Speaker 10: stories can't hid find my seat Kevin, go ahead and
- 45:01Speaker 10: settle in. Gotta be selective, doing all the research, keeping
- 45:04Speaker 10: it objective, always being effective. Can say he got a neck.
- 45:07Speaker 12: Pick it of the litter.
- 45:08Speaker 10: You see how Newton got his back. Yeah, the content
- 45:11Speaker 10: that you need. This could be a new sign. Talking
