• 0:45
Speaker 3: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, this is Carale with Let's Talk.
• 0:48
Speaker 3: And I have I have in the building. I have
• 0:51
Speaker 3: Hollis Lewis here's and I have another. I'm not gonna
• 0:56
Speaker 3: say he's a guest. I'm gonna say he we and
• 0:59
Speaker 3: he is out. Yeah, we in his house. And today
• 1:05
Speaker 3: I think we're going to have a very very interesting conversation.
• 1:08
Speaker 3: And I'm gonna let him introduce himself and jump right
• 1:12
Speaker 3: into the story and we'll go from there.
• 1:13
Speaker 4: Well, all right, I'm what I mean that you'll miss Yeah,
• 1:19
  Speaker 4: we missed.
• 1:20
Speaker 3: Lisa's not here. She she wasnable to make it the
• 1:23
  Speaker 3: day came.
• 1:24
Speaker 5: I so you ain't come from no way, no way.
• 1:29
Speaker 4: I thought we were better than that. I love it. So,
• 1:33
Speaker 4: so holl's go ahead.
• 1:34
Speaker 3: We're here to talk about the Capitol High basketball situation. So,
• 1:37
Speaker 3: if you don't know, Capitol High was seventeen and four
• 1:40
Speaker 3: ending the regular season. They were perennial number one, number
• 1:43
Speaker 3: two team and Triple A ball.
• 1:45
  Speaker 4: Again.
• 1:46
Speaker 3: They were Quad A last year. They moved a Triple
• 1:48
Speaker 3: A this year or whatever. It's so confusing now. So
• 1:52
Speaker 3: they entered a regional sectional tournament. I think is it
• 1:55
Speaker 3: reasonably regional? Okay, so regional turn sectional? Yeah, no more sectional.
• 1:59
Speaker 3: So they entered a regional tournament. Again, this is the
• 2:01
Speaker 3: like number one, number two team in the nation, excuse me,
• 2:03
Speaker 3: the state, and somehow they get ranked six. So the
• 2:07
Speaker 3: coaches from a couple of schools in that particular conference,
• 2:12
Speaker 3: you know, they vote on the you know, the rankings
• 2:15
Speaker 3: as far as going into the regional. So a Capitol High,
• 2:18
Speaker 3: which was seventeen and four, they're supposed to go off
• 2:21
Speaker 3: your overall record and accomplishment, not necessarily conference records. Getting
• 2:25
Speaker 3: vote voted six, they go to Greenbrier East Travel two
• 2:28
Speaker 3: hours and unfortunately loss. So that's that's the backstory. So
• 2:33
Speaker 3: go ahead with you.
• 2:33
Speaker 5: First of all, I want to shout out to the kids,
• 2:35
Speaker 5: the ball ors at Greenbrier East. They have nothing to
• 2:38
Speaker 5: do with this. It's just a flawed system. And when
• 2:41
Speaker 5: I say that, coaches should never be able to vote
• 2:44
Speaker 5: on seating. If we can do this, all right, what
• 2:46
Speaker 5: if we do this in football? Me call you the
• 2:49
Speaker 5: coach of South Charles. I'm at Capitol Hollers, you at
• 2:52
Speaker 5: GW and we need one more coach to make sure
• 2:55
Speaker 5: Martinsburg go on the road every time.
• 2:58
Speaker 4: And we just vote that. We just voted like we
• 3:01
Speaker 4: can vote for that.
• 3:03
Speaker 5: Me, you and you can change the seedings of the
• 3:07
Speaker 5: body of work. I think it should be looked at
• 3:09
Speaker 5: as the body of work. So now you're gonna say, well,
• 3:11
Speaker 5: they didn't play any regional games. The schedule was put
• 3:14
Speaker 5: out before they did this new region set up then, and.
• 3:17
Speaker 3: Remember they were going from four A to three AS.
• 3:19
Speaker 3: So that's what it got messed up at yes and
• 3:22
Speaker 3: now and let me I'm gonna say this and you
• 3:27
Speaker 3: can correct me if I'm wrong. At some point, this
• 3:33
Speaker 3: is an issue that isn't really like me on the outside.
• 3:39
Speaker 3: I got nothing in this, right, this is all about
• 3:43
Speaker 3: a particular positions coaches.
• 3:49
Speaker 5: Somebody has done this. We're thinking about this is something wrong. Yeah,
• 3:54
Speaker 5: four coaches did it. They're voted them last. Like, how
• 3:57
Speaker 5: can you vote a team that got seventeen wins under
• 4:01
Speaker 5: a team that got three?
• 4:02
Speaker 4: I don't care if they played bitty league basketball, I
• 4:05
Speaker 4: don't care. How was that?
• 4:06
Speaker 5: How was that even right? You're gonna say because they
• 4:08
Speaker 5: didn't play a team in the region. But they played
• 4:11
Speaker 5: South Charleston twice, they played Parkersburg South, they beat Bridgeport
• 4:16
Speaker 5: at home. Yeah, they played g W they played Chapmanville,
• 4:20
Speaker 5: they played Riverside, they played two teams out in Ohio
• 4:24
Speaker 5: like six eight teams. It's a flawed system and they
• 4:28
  Speaker 5: got exposed.
• 4:30
Speaker 3: And let's be clear, like, this wasn't like when we're
• 4:32
Speaker 3: saying those four coaches were colluding. This isn't our conjecture.
• 4:36
Speaker 3: This isn't something like we're guessing they told it in
• 4:40
Speaker 3: the media, like, yeah, we did this. They didn't try
• 4:42
Speaker 3: to hide their hands, and that's what makes it even
• 4:44
  Speaker 3: more egregious.
• 4:45
Speaker 4: Well, do we have a why, Like, is the why?
• 4:50
Speaker 3: The the excuse they gave is because Capitol didn't play
• 4:55
Speaker 3: enough regional games or conference games.
• 4:59
Speaker 4: It's regional. Yeah, I'm getting it. This all confusing, But
• 5:05
Speaker 4: what's the record Capitol seven seventeen and four.
• 5:11
Speaker 3: How many people are better? How many people record is
• 5:13
Speaker 3: better than that? But I mean that's kind of not
• 5:16
Speaker 3: That's not really the issue. The issue is that again
• 5:18
Speaker 3: they got what they wanted. They sent Capitol on the
• 5:20
Speaker 3: road in Capitol lost. They didn't want to have to
• 5:22
  Speaker 3: play a Capitol.
• 5:23
Speaker 5: And let's be honest, Carl, Greenbrier East is not an
• 5:26
Speaker 5: easy place to play. The gym is small, their their
• 5:29
Speaker 5: fans is spectacular, Like, I can't knock that they fans,
• 5:34
Speaker 5: I know, yeah, I know, you got senator the senators there,
• 5:39
Speaker 5: it's his cord, he got a big chair. And it's
• 5:42
Speaker 5: just a hard place to play. And I heard from
• 5:45
Speaker 5: an administrator at Capital that our cheerleaders, in our mascot,
• 5:49
Speaker 5: they even had no room.
• 5:50
Speaker 4: To do what they did.
• 5:52
Speaker 5: Now we can put this in Capital at Capitol, which
• 5:55
Speaker 5: were supposed to be they shouldn't even played each other.
• 5:57
Speaker 5: First of all, because they shouldn't played each other. Capital
• 6:01
Speaker 5: should have played a start like a WAT team. But
• 6:04
Speaker 5: if you because of their rank before they're ranking. But
• 6:06
Speaker 5: if you're trying to get a good team out put
• 6:09
Speaker 5: them on the road against another good team, that's a
• 6:11
Speaker 5: hostile environment. We ain't gonna talk about the files thirty
• 6:14
  Speaker 5: to eight. I can't make it up, but I ain't
• 6:15
Speaker 5: gonna bring that up. We ain't gonna talk about that.
• 6:17
Speaker 5: But it's a hostile environment. You got to travel two
• 6:19
Speaker 5: and a half hours. If home court at home field
• 6:22
Speaker 5: don't have an advantage, it wouldn't be a word. You
• 6:25
Speaker 5: wouldn't have say home court advantage or home field advantage.
• 6:29
Speaker 5: We know it's advantage. Both of you guys play sports.
• 6:32
Speaker 5: The kids gotta get up early, they got to go
• 6:34
Speaker 5: to Greenbrier, they got to go.
• 6:35
Speaker 4: To school that day.
• 6:36
Speaker 5: If you if we at home, I think it's a
• 6:39
Speaker 5: different story, I promise you.
• 6:41
Speaker 3: I think it goes back and again within this the
• 6:44
Speaker 3: wv SSA C they actually sent recommendations to them to
• 6:49
Speaker 3: what they thought should be you know, the rankings. And
• 6:52
Speaker 3: again just going back to like the premise of the conversation,
• 6:57
Speaker 3: you in that circumstances, you never need to.
• 6:59
Speaker 4: Have of coaches voting.
• 7:02
Speaker 3: Unfortunately, I think you have to take the human element
• 7:05
Speaker 3: out of it is strictly go to a metrics or
• 7:08
Speaker 3: you have to have a third party, a non interested,
• 7:12
Speaker 3: a non affiliated party that actually is going to set
• 7:15
Speaker 3: the rankings. I mean, the easiest thing is just to
• 7:17
Speaker 3: have the metrics. You go by record first, you go
• 7:20
Speaker 3: by head to head matchups, and then you go by
• 7:22
Speaker 3: the teams you want and lost agains.
• 7:24
Speaker 5: Why are we not in that space? Why are we
• 7:28
Speaker 5: not in that space?
• 7:30
Speaker 3: I don't know why they do it like this for
• 7:33
Speaker 3: regional setups, I have no idea. It's a very very
• 7:36
  Speaker 3: flaw system.
• 7:37
Speaker 5: I think you need to bring us by in a
• 7:38
Speaker 5: show that's smarter than me and ask them why that's
• 7:41
Speaker 5: that's the question. Why and how how are we letting
• 7:45
Speaker 5: coaches vote on seating? That blows your mind? I mean
• 7:50
Speaker 5: it's gonna be hard. I'd be hard pressed to think that. Like,
• 7:56
Speaker 5: if I got to vote, I may have played trust,
• 7:59
Speaker 5: I may have seen or capital. I may have seen
• 8:02
Speaker 5: them right, And maybe I'm thinking to myself, I don't
• 8:06
Speaker 5: I don't really want them in the in the first bingle.
• 8:10
Speaker 3: But but I think the issue is like what messages
• 8:13
Speaker 3: that sending to kids, Like if I'm a coach and
• 8:16
Speaker 3: I know my team's not very good, I'm gonna rank
• 8:19
Speaker 3: myself accordingly. I'm not going to try to like buck
• 8:23
Speaker 3: the system like we're we are. We are the record
• 8:25
Speaker 3: that we are, and we're going to get ranked how
• 8:27
Speaker 3: we're supposed to go. And if we win, we win.
• 8:29
Speaker 3: If we lose, we lose. But it's not like you
• 8:31
Speaker 3: can't look back and say, you know what, I what
• 8:35
Speaker 3: I'll say to that. As bad as this may sound,
• 8:39
Speaker 3: some of this ain't about the kids. I mean, it ain't,
• 8:41
Speaker 3: you know. Some of that's just ain't about the kids.
• 8:44
Speaker 3: It's about me. I'm the coach, and I want to
• 8:47
Speaker 3: win at and at all costs. And if I can
• 8:53
Speaker 3: get you where I can, where it works better for me,
• 8:58
  Speaker 3: why wouldn't.
• 8:59
Speaker 4: I do it? Nah? I don't think you do that.
• 9:02
  Speaker 4: I don't see me do. I don't see honest I will,
• 9:05
  Speaker 4: I won't. You're better guy in me.
• 9:07
Speaker 5: If I if I can make this thing look like
• 9:11
Speaker 5: the way I want to look, I'm gonna say, Oh yeah,
• 9:13
  Speaker 5: bro y'all seven, that's.
• 9:14
Speaker 4: Why it shouldn't be there. It shouldn't be there.
• 9:17
Speaker 5: How can you vote a team higher than a team
• 9:20
Speaker 5: won three games and a team won seventeen that it
• 9:23
  Speaker 5: shouldn't be there?
• 9:24
Speaker 4: Yeah, because I'm going to Martinsburg last every time. If
• 9:26
Speaker 4: it was football car.
• 9:29
Speaker 3: Exactly, I mean, that would be that would be the
• 9:32
Speaker 3: best play. That'll keep them, that'll make them have to
• 9:37
Speaker 3: go road, go on the road. But why would you
• 9:40
Speaker 3: want to taint it? Like even if you won the
• 9:42
Speaker 3: regional championships, so you made it to the tournament at whatever,
• 9:45
Speaker 3: why would you want I just wouldn't want to taint
• 9:47
Speaker 3: it to that degree. And I'm just saying, as an adult,
• 9:50
Speaker 3: you got four coaches that's doing that.
• 9:52
  Speaker 4: That's that's crazy to me.
• 9:54
Speaker 3: And again, shout out to Ripley, shout out to I
• 9:57
Speaker 3: forget the other schools, but it was other schools that
• 9:59
Speaker 3: actually voted accordingly and they voted right. So shout out
• 10:02
Speaker 3: to those school just Hoover Ripley. I know those two
• 10:06
Speaker 3: for sure. I'm just saying, like, if I'm in that
• 10:08
Speaker 3: position and I'm a coach, of course we want to win,
• 10:11
Speaker 3: but I'm not willing to like go that far with it.
• 10:14
  Speaker 3: I just think that's just greasy. And I don't necessarily
• 10:17
Speaker 3: know who the four teams are. I don't know who
• 10:21
Speaker 3: the coaches are on that team, but I'm I'm inviting
• 10:27
Speaker 3: you to the show call in or whatever. At some
• 10:33
Speaker 3: point in time, you are welcome to come on the
• 10:35
Speaker 3: show to discuss this, to defend yourself because for me
• 10:41
Speaker 3: as an athlete, I want the smoke.
• 10:45
Speaker 4: I want it. Yeah, I'm not gonna I want my
• 10:48
Speaker 4: kids to have the smoke.
• 10:50
Speaker 3: And if you win, great, If you don't, hey, who
• 10:53
Speaker 3: did you face? You face the smoke? And that's we
• 10:56
Speaker 3: expected that to happen. You can't duck it.
• 11:01
Speaker 5: And if you're ducking it, you're doing a disservice for
• 11:03
Speaker 5: your kid and probably probably you doing it for yourself.
• 11:08
Speaker 4: Yeah I don't know. It's just you know what I'm saying.
• 11:11
Speaker 5: You're doing that because you want to be a notable
• 11:14
Speaker 5: coach who's won a championship or whatever, and and and
• 11:19
Speaker 5: keep moving up the ranks in some form of fashion.
• 11:22
Speaker 5: But here's the thing, guys, next year, whoever wins that
• 11:27
Speaker 5: region were gonna forget about this. They got the regional championship,
• 11:30
Speaker 5: they couldn't down the next we go, we go. We
• 11:33
Speaker 5: can talk about it now because it's hot, But next year,
• 11:35
Speaker 5: when they the regional champs, they're the one going to
• 11:38
Speaker 5: the Civic Center and they're not asking how they got there.
• 11:41
Speaker 3: Nobody's gonna I think. No, we live in social media,
• 11:45
Speaker 3: a's they gonna remember how you got there.
• 11:47
Speaker 4: But they still getting the schirch to say, I.
• 11:51
Speaker 3: Because you're gonna get you're gonna have it, just like
• 11:53
Speaker 3: South Charleston when we want to stay championship during COVID,
• 11:56
Speaker 3: I like to bring it up again, so about so
• 12:01
Speaker 3: so so one of those teams end up making and
• 12:03
Speaker 3: the winning, it's gonna be a big asterisk and you're
• 12:06
Speaker 3: not going to live it down.
• 12:07
  Speaker 4: A look different, a little different. It's a little different.
• 12:10
Speaker 4: But played four games that year, you can't say it
• 12:14
Speaker 4: six you didn't play. We were the best. That was
• 12:17
  Speaker 4: pretty good.
• 12:17
Speaker 5: Y'all want to beating martins Burg, we was beating. We
• 12:22
  Speaker 5: was loaded, y'all have y'all pretty good. But I didn't
• 12:25
Speaker 5: play anybody we had like we had like ten guys
• 12:27
Speaker 5: win d one year.
• 12:28
Speaker 4: I can bring up y'all schedule, But but to you
• 12:31
  Speaker 4: all's debate.
• 12:33
Speaker 3: See, I think that's the debate that a lot of
• 12:35
Speaker 3: folks will will want to have.
• 12:39
Speaker 5: About this situation to try to nullify it. And and
• 12:45
Speaker 5: how do you like, how do you how do you like?
• 12:48
Speaker 5: How do you how do you make how do you
• 12:49
Speaker 5: get past that point system like college SI. I think
• 12:52
  Speaker 5: it's a system that's metric. It's it's a straight up metric.
• 12:56
  Speaker 5: It's just it's record.
• 12:58
Speaker 3: It's head to head matchup, and you get a certain
• 13:00
Speaker 3: allocation of points for teams that you beat, teams that
• 13:03
Speaker 3: you lost to, different things of that nature. So guess what, No, No,
• 13:06
Speaker 3: I was gonna ask the question like, so what do
• 13:08
Speaker 3: you so what should the because again the WV S
• 13:11
  Speaker 3: A S A C. Shout out to them, they did
• 13:12
Speaker 3: send the recommendation on what they thought should happen in
• 13:15
Speaker 3: that regional set up. So do you think they just
• 13:18
Speaker 3: need to have the authority to say, Okay, this is
• 13:21
Speaker 3: the this is the ranking or final say listen, I.
• 13:25
Speaker 4: Think they have to.
• 13:26
Speaker 5: I think they they can't sit on the sideline and
• 13:30
  Speaker 5: not do something.
• 13:31
  Speaker 4: They got it.
• 13:32
Speaker 3: They gotta be aggressive and step out, say something, do something,
• 13:37
Speaker 3: because you can't let this go and you can't like
• 13:41
Speaker 3: you can't let this go and think and and it
• 13:43
Speaker 3: be okay, do those four coaches go ahead.
• 13:45
  Speaker 4: I'm talking.
• 13:45
Speaker 5: I'm about to tell you that teams who voted capital seventh,
• 13:47
Speaker 5: that's last because they can't vote for theirself, right, it's
• 13:50
Speaker 5: eight teams there. Greenbrier East voted them seven, Pipe View
• 13:55
Speaker 5: voting them seven, Princeton voting them seven, and Shady Springs
• 13:59
  Speaker 5: voted them seven.
• 14:00
Speaker 3: So should those coaches, Should those schools face some sort
• 14:04
Speaker 3: of penalty for that?
• 14:05
Speaker 5: I think so, because then here comes the rabbit hole,
• 14:08
Speaker 5: And I know Cookie won't do it, but I'm if
• 14:11
Speaker 5: you go low, I'm going to hell next year. I'm
• 14:14
Speaker 5: voting the best team seven. I don't care who it is. Now,
• 14:17
Speaker 5: I'm all right, okay, I see how y'all playing, and
• 14:20
Speaker 5: I'm gonnaet some potners in the in the in the
• 14:22
Speaker 5: in the region to vote at seven to Now it
• 14:25
Speaker 5: just becomes a rabbit hole when it's not fair, because
• 14:27
Speaker 5: now I'm gonna do the same thing you did to me.
• 14:29
Speaker 4: If it's a better team and I'm the head coaching,
• 14:32
  Speaker 4: I gonna vote.
• 14:32
Speaker 3: Right because I just don't understand collusion in any sort
• 14:39
  Speaker 3: of business.
• 14:40
Speaker 4: We see it in sports.
• 14:41
Speaker 3: We see coaches that in the NFL college we seen
• 14:45
Speaker 3: them get fine, we seen them get suspended. We've seen
• 14:47
Speaker 3: administrators get suspended and fine when you have collusion. We've
• 14:51
Speaker 3: seen owners of NFL NBA teams get fine when there's
• 14:56
Speaker 3: evidence of collusion. So this is clear evidence of collusion.
• 15:00
Speaker 3: Something has to happen from them.
• 15:01
Speaker 4: Do you think they think that they got away with it?
• 15:05
Speaker 5: No, he came out to say the Springs coach and
• 15:07
Speaker 5: I hope I'm messing up. He came out and said, oh,
• 15:10
Speaker 5: I'm going Capitol last, I ain't play no regional games,
• 15:12
Speaker 5: and this, this and that.
• 15:13
Speaker 3: He but he's just but he coming out. That's not
• 15:18
Speaker 3: coming out. That's justifying. He came and justified. Now he
• 15:22
Speaker 3: said this before though, okay before.
• 15:24
Speaker 5: But my thing is, if I'm sitting back and I'm
• 15:28
Speaker 5: hearing this conversation, I could I could make the case.
• 15:33
Speaker 4: You know what, they're right. I was wrong. I made,
• 15:37
Speaker 4: I made I made a mistaken say that. Well, and
• 15:45
Speaker 4: here's the thing. If if we know, if if people.
• 15:50
Speaker 5: Are listening and they say that this is that that's wrong,
• 15:52
Speaker 5: what they did was wrong, it don't really matter what
• 15:56
  Speaker 5: what they think.
• 15:59
Speaker 4: They're wrong. I mean, the general public is gonna take
• 16:02
Speaker 4: it's gonna look at this and think that that's wrong.
• 16:05
Speaker 4: But to this point, it seems like they have got
• 16:07
  Speaker 4: away with it.
• 16:07
Speaker 3: Capitol went to head to go to greenbrier Es and lost,
• 16:10
Speaker 3: so they got what they were so the result that
• 16:13
Speaker 3: they were fishing for they got.
• 16:14
Speaker 4: They got it, you know what I mean.
• 16:15
Speaker 3: And like I said, to this point, I guess my
• 16:18
Speaker 3: question would be, like, if there is going to be
• 16:21
Speaker 3: some sort of penalty after the fact, who is going
• 16:24
Speaker 3: to implement that penalty? Should it be the WVS SAC,
• 16:29
Speaker 3: Should it be the conference that there is, should be
• 16:31
Speaker 3: the regional Like somebody to me has to do something,
• 16:33
Speaker 3: because you cannot collude at anything, even if insider tradee.
• 16:38
Speaker 3: Martha Stewart went to prison for a year for somebody
• 16:42
Speaker 3: telling her some colluding to tell her some information. You
• 16:45
Speaker 3: cannot do this on any level. And I just don't
• 16:47
Speaker 3: know how you're so brazen enough to just hey, yeah
• 16:50
Speaker 3: we did it and that's it and nothing's gonna happen.
• 16:53
Speaker 4: It has to be something, I agree.
• 16:55
Speaker 5: So what do you think their justification gonna say because
• 16:57
Speaker 5: they didn't play any regional games?
• 16:59
  Speaker 4: I mean, they.
• 16:59
Speaker 3: Already say the justification, which again that doesn't even matter
• 17:03
Speaker 3: because from what I and this is coming from Principal
• 17:05
Speaker 3: Anderson and capitol High that above anything, in all things,
• 17:10
Speaker 3: your record is what stands.
• 17:12
Speaker 4: Body will work. Yeah, your body will work.
• 17:14
Speaker 3: And because of the flip flopping of all the changing
• 17:17
Speaker 3: of the rankings in the in the classifications.
• 17:21
Speaker 4: Your schedules already set.
• 17:24
Speaker 3: So I can't change my schedule in the middle of
• 17:27
Speaker 3: the season to accommodate you. I can maybe add a
• 17:30
Speaker 3: game or two, but I can't change my schedule because
• 17:33
Speaker 3: it's already set. You know how the schedules go a year, two, three, four,
• 17:36
Speaker 3: sometime five years in advance. And you can't say Capitol
• 17:40
Speaker 3: On playing the hardest conference in the state, the ms SAC.
• 17:44
Speaker 4: What ms SAC, that's the hardest conference in the state.
• 17:48
Speaker 5: There's not a better conference than GW and South Charleston
• 17:52
Speaker 5: and Capitol and Riverside and and it's just it's just
• 17:56
Speaker 5: it's sad because we let adults mess up things again. Yeah,
• 18:01
Speaker 5: when are we gonna stop talking about adults messing up?
• 18:04
Speaker 5: And it's and it and it's and it's sports, yes, yeah,
• 18:08
  Speaker 5: it's it's sports man. And it's a shame because if
• 18:15
Speaker 5: sports does what people have always said that it will
• 18:19
Speaker 5: do for young men and young women, it will help them,
• 18:23
Speaker 5: it will teach them discipline, all of those kinds of things,
• 18:26
Speaker 5: all those positive things. And you as a coach, you
• 18:33
Speaker 5: as an administrator, you as a fan, you as a dad,
• 18:41
Speaker 5: all of those positions. When you start to do something negative,
• 18:47
Speaker 5: you interrupt the growth of those young men and those
• 18:52
Speaker 5: young women who are trying to learn structure.
• 18:57
Speaker 3: Man, I just think you let them off the hook. Man,
• 19:00
Speaker 3: don't go to Capitol win or lose. You're gonna be
• 19:03
Speaker 3: stronger for it. You can't try to hire kids from adversity,
• 19:06
Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying, Like, go ahead, throw them
• 19:08
  Speaker 3: in their fire.
• 19:09
Speaker 4: The LBR, you'll take that. L's cool.
• 19:11
Speaker 3: And just speaking of that, and again I know and
• 19:14
Speaker 3: y'all ain't trying to go here, but it's the same
• 19:15
Speaker 3: thing that happens. I'm looking at like the little league
• 19:18
Speaker 3: football situations around here.
• 19:19
Speaker 4: It's the same thing.
• 19:20
Speaker 3: Just not letting certain teams in leagues and stuff like that.
• 19:23
  Speaker 3: It's just, man, I don't know. I'm just for like
• 19:27
Speaker 3: taking the human element out of all of it. At
• 19:29
  Speaker 3: this point, how.
• 19:30
Speaker 5: Do we how do we get how do we how
• 19:32
Speaker 5: do we get it out of the hands of individuals,
• 19:36
Speaker 5: Like let's take let's let's go to youth sports. All
• 19:40
Speaker 5: the youth sports needs would be bylaws and who plays
• 19:46
Speaker 5: who to set a schedule each year. So if there
• 19:50
Speaker 5: was somebody who was in charge of that that organization,
• 19:56
Speaker 5: not a board, member of a team or president of
• 19:59
Speaker 5: a team, somebody that's individual by themselves make this decision.
• 20:06
Speaker 4: Let's just say, like a Hollis Lewis, I don't want this.
• 20:09
Speaker 3: You know, talking to itself right now, but but I
• 20:16
Speaker 3: think to your point, you need a board. You have
• 20:19
Speaker 3: to have a third in any of these situations. You
• 20:21
Speaker 3: need a third party, non interested, non affiliated entity, whether
• 20:26
  Speaker 3: that's a board, whether that's a group of individuals, to
• 20:29
Speaker 3: make these decisions, that's going to be held accountable, that's
• 20:33
Speaker 3: going to have the record reflected in the public.
• 20:36
Speaker 4: Because here's the thing.
• 20:37
Speaker 3: It's a reason why again we could we can go
• 20:39
Speaker 3: down a number of rabbit holes, probably, but it's a
• 20:43
Speaker 3: reason why we're not producing no more Randy Mosses, no
• 20:46
Speaker 3: more Carawle's, no more Kurt Warners, no more Jason Williams,
• 20:49
Speaker 3: because we are ducking the smoke at every level.
• 20:53
Speaker 4: Think about that. It's a reason why we don't have
• 20:55
Speaker 4: those guys no more.
• 20:57
Speaker 3: We used to have a consistent group of guys who
• 20:59
Speaker 3: were not just good for the state, but also like
• 21:03
  Speaker 3: nationally elite athletes.
• 21:05
Speaker 4: Again, we population decline. It.
• 21:06
Speaker 3: It's a lot of factors into it, but abba you
• 21:09
Speaker 3: have to throw that we're ducking smoke. We're seeing it
• 21:11
Speaker 3: at the little league levels. We seeing it at the
• 21:14
Speaker 3: high school levels where we're not pushing our kids to
• 21:17
Speaker 3: compete against the best. Randy Moss in them is great
• 21:20
Speaker 3: as that team. Those teams were. They didn't win the
• 21:22
  Speaker 3: championship every year.
• 21:23
  Speaker 4: Jr.
• 21:23
Speaker 3: House, they didn't win those championships every single year. Quincy Wilson,
• 21:26
Speaker 3: they didn't win championships every single year because they faced
• 21:30
Speaker 3: the stiffest, toughest competition and wasn't no smoke.
• 21:33
  Speaker 4: Ducked.
• 21:34
Speaker 3: And that's the problem when you start to set up
• 21:36
Speaker 3: your kids at a situation where you don't put them
• 21:39
Speaker 3: in a verse situations, particularly when it comes to sports.
• 21:42
Speaker 3: You're not making them play against the best. It hurts them,
• 21:45
Speaker 3: it don't hurt you. Your days is over.
• 21:48
Speaker 5: And to your point, and I probably have said this
• 21:53
Speaker 5: before when Kurt Warner was at Pine Bow.
• 21:59
Speaker 4: And I think it.
• 22:00
Speaker 5: Was double A or whatever, Single A, and you know
• 22:05
Speaker 5: everybody's hearing about him, you know, so he gets selected.
• 22:08
Speaker 5: You know, he won all the all the awards and
• 22:11
Speaker 5: he was gonna be the North South. He was getting
• 22:14
Speaker 5: the best back in the nation.
• 22:16
  Speaker 4: Award.
• 22:17
Speaker 3: So he was coming in a couple of days late
• 22:21
Speaker 3: for the North South game.
• 22:22
Speaker 4: So me and my buddy Eddie ray Dies, we were like, man,
• 22:27
Speaker 4: let's go, let's go meet him and see what he's like.
• 22:30
Speaker 4: We wanted to size him up. Bro. I'm looking at
• 22:33
Speaker 4: him and I'm like, well, he ain't all that big,
• 22:35
Speaker 4: you know, he ain't all that But he put his
• 22:39
  Speaker 4: uniform on.
• 22:41
Speaker 3: And the first time he took off in the backfield,
• 22:47
Speaker 3: I don't think I had ever in my life at
• 22:51
Speaker 3: that point in time, had ever seen anybody like that.
• 22:57
Speaker 3: What that did for me was the understand there's still
• 23:01
Speaker 3: another level. You know, you in the North South game.
• 23:05
Speaker 3: But Kurt Warner no wonder he was. He was he
• 23:10
Speaker 3: was going to Penn State because he and I'm going
• 23:12
Speaker 3: to Marshall. Marshall ain't winning no games and the Penn
• 23:15
Speaker 3: State winning national championship. There was a clear difference between that,
• 23:21
Speaker 3: and I think kids need to see that you got it.
• 23:24
  Speaker 4: You can't.
• 23:24
Speaker 3: You can't run from that because it's because if you
• 23:29
Speaker 3: run from it, you will never get to even see it.
• 23:31
Speaker 3: Probably because you're not going to be in an All
• 23:33
Speaker 3: Star game, You're not going to be at a school
• 23:36
Speaker 3: that that's going to be like that.
• 23:38
Speaker 5: It's just not gonna happen. So so what you guys saying,
• 23:40
Speaker 5: and we see this a lot. All the superstars are
• 23:43
Speaker 5: teaming up together and not playing against each other, and
• 23:46
Speaker 5: that's hurting. It's hurting our state pretty much. And speaking
• 23:50
Speaker 5: of that, we can go into the transfer. I know
• 23:52
Speaker 5: there's a lot of CONTROVERSI the House Bill full four,
• 23:56
Speaker 5: I think it's forty four to twenty five, and let
• 23:58
Speaker 5: me just explain what it is and what it isn't.
• 24:01
Speaker 5: So basically, it basically repeals legislative authority over the transfer
• 24:08
Speaker 5: rule of high school sports. So it passed the House
• 24:11
Speaker 5: and basically it just gets us out the way as
• 24:14
Speaker 5: far as the legislative body. Now it's going to the Senate,
• 24:16
Speaker 5: and if it passes the Senate there's no conflicts. Then
• 24:19
Speaker 5: then to go to the governor to be signed.
• 24:21
Speaker 3: So if it is signed into law, basically all it
• 24:25
Speaker 3: will do it will pit the authority back with the
• 24:28
Speaker 3: wv SSAC. So they could keep the rule as it is,
• 24:32
Speaker 3: they could go back to the previous rule.
• 24:34
Speaker 4: Or they can make up a whole new rule.
• 24:36
Speaker 3: Now the wv SSAC is the enforcement mechanism they enforce
• 24:42
Speaker 3: the rules of high school sports. Generally, when it comes
• 24:45
Speaker 3: to something like that, from what I understand, administrators at
• 24:49
Speaker 3: the various high schools, they will vote on the rule.
• 24:53
Speaker 3: So if you want to see the rule reflect it
• 24:56
Speaker 3: a certain way, you need to get with your high
• 24:58
Speaker 3: school principal and the ads and coaches and all that,
• 25:02
Speaker 3: and you need to express those feelings about how you
• 25:05
Speaker 3: want to see the rule, implement it, and play it out.
• 25:09
  Speaker 3: I I that's I'm glad you said that, just the
• 25:14
Speaker 3: way that you said it, because that that's actually.
• 25:16
Speaker 5: Perfect for me to say. If I'm a coach, I want,
• 25:23
Speaker 5: I want to smoke like I want. I want to
• 25:27
Speaker 5: represent my community. I don't want the best player out
• 25:32
Speaker 5: of Charleston. I don't want the best player out of Hurricane.
• 25:35
Speaker 5: I don't want the best player out of South Hills.
• 25:37
  Speaker 5: I don't want I don't want that. I want my
• 25:41
Speaker 5: kids in my community. And let's go to work. And
• 25:45
Speaker 5: I just and and and for you to.
• 25:51
Speaker 3: Man, I spent four years at Marshall Lowson, four years
• 25:55
Speaker 3: with never a winning season. If you know we need
• 26:00
Speaker 3: thing about me and my career, it don't what is
• 26:04
  Speaker 3: that matter?
• 26:05
Speaker 4: But that's all that matters. Is what you do.
• 26:08
Speaker 3: But I'll give the other side of that, because there
• 26:10
Speaker 3: is another side of it. When you have a school
• 26:12
Speaker 3: like GW we got one feeder school, so at some
• 26:16
Speaker 3: point we need other athletes to come in, Okay, to
• 26:21
Speaker 3: fill out those rosters. Wait a minute, we got one
• 26:22
Speaker 3: feeder school, all right, but wait a minute, Wait a minute.
• 26:24
Speaker 3: How long have y'all had one feeder school. We had
• 26:27
Speaker 3: just since the inception of the school, and we've always
• 26:31
Speaker 3: had a few transfers come in.
• 26:33
Speaker 4: So you need a.
• 26:34
Speaker 3: School recruiting or people coming. Oh not recruiting far God,
• 26:38
Speaker 3: I know, Okay, so the kids kids coming. But what
• 26:41
Speaker 3: I'm saying is like you can't like when you when
• 26:44
Speaker 3: it comes to that transfer rule. It's not a one
• 26:46
Speaker 3: size fits all model, right because when you have schools
• 26:50
Speaker 3: like South Charles, when you have schools like Capital, you
• 26:52
Speaker 3: have a multitude of a feeder schools. So if you
• 26:54
Speaker 3: had a smaller community that's still playing at a really
• 26:58
Speaker 3: high level, there needs to be some flexibility. And again
• 27:01
Speaker 3: I would say it needs to be flexibility for kids
• 27:03
Speaker 3: because every situation ain't gonna fit every kid.
• 27:06
Speaker 5: So I can't work with you on that. You need
• 27:08
Speaker 5: to be you need to be double A or single.
• 27:11
Speaker 3: I mean, I'm just saying our numbers don't indicate that,
• 27:13
Speaker 3: so we can't be. What I'm saying though, the other
• 27:16
Speaker 3: side of that, too is that every situation don't fit
• 27:18
Speaker 3: every kid. So if I'm in a situation where maybe
• 27:21
Speaker 3: I'm just not getting along with a coach, or I'm
• 27:24
Speaker 3: not in a situation that's gonna be best for my
• 27:27
Speaker 3: sort of talent, it may be right for me to
• 27:29
Speaker 3: move now. Again, No, you don't just be moving any
• 27:34
Speaker 3: any rules around you. I can't make the case that
• 27:39
Speaker 3: South Charleston fit me like like, because you elite athlete,
• 27:46
  Speaker 3: you're different.
• 27:46
Speaker 4: You're not You're not everybody else.
• 27:48
Speaker 5: You can't just use you didn't nobody call me no
• 27:50
Speaker 5: elite athlete in high school.
• 27:52
Speaker 3: You had an elite athlete and mentality nobody was doing
• 27:57
Speaker 3: with you waking up in the five in the morning,
• 27:59
Speaker 3: working out, going crazy. Nobody they wasn't doing that. That's
• 28:03
Speaker 3: the issue that the gaming is not.
• 28:06
Speaker 5: The gaming is not the problems you not getting up
• 28:08
Speaker 5: at five o'clock in the morning.
• 28:10
Speaker 3: But what I'm saying is, perhaps you gotta have some flexibility.
• 28:14
Speaker 3: No whatxibility good, It's gonna be real good.
• 28:21
Speaker 5: If you can change this rule, how would you make
• 28:25
Speaker 5: it look? And I'm ask both of you guys, if
• 28:27
Speaker 5: you can, if you can make this transfer rule, how
• 28:29
  Speaker 5: would you make.
• 28:30
Speaker 4: It look all? Right?
• 28:31
Speaker 3: So I would say, you get the transfer going out
• 28:34
Speaker 3: of middle school to high school. So if you you like,
• 28:37
Speaker 3: you're not mandated to go to your theater school essentially,
• 28:42
Speaker 3: So I would say that that's one. And then I
• 28:45
Speaker 3: would say you get one other opportunity and if you
• 28:48
Speaker 3: trans and it's no, and it has to be done
• 28:51
Speaker 3: by a certain time, so it's no like middle of
• 28:52
Speaker 3: the year, none of that stuff. You get one opportunity
• 28:55
Speaker 3: if you transfer anywhere else.
• 28:57
Speaker 4: Beyond that, you got.
• 28:57
Speaker 3: To sit out to transfers in one dance. That's what
• 29:01
Speaker 3: I mean. That went and one in high school. And
• 29:04
Speaker 3: I would almost want to say, like like I said,
• 29:06
Speaker 3: I just I want to say maybe even the one
• 29:10
Speaker 3: out of I don't know, you know now that I
• 29:13
Speaker 3: rethink that maybe I would even say you don't get
• 29:16
Speaker 3: the trans I would I couldn't say that you definitely
• 29:18
Speaker 3: get the transfer coming out of middle school. And then
• 29:20
Speaker 3: maybe you have to have a legitimate reason or you
• 29:23
Speaker 3: have to go before the board to say this is
• 29:25
Speaker 3: why I need to transfer once I'm in high school,
• 29:27
Speaker 3: because you just don't want to create a situation where
• 29:29
Speaker 3: kids is just moving fluently, just just moving from school
• 29:32
Speaker 3: to school to school. But I would also say this too,
• 29:34
Speaker 3: and I said this on the house floor. We have
• 29:36
Speaker 3: school choice in West Virginia, and you can't tell me that.
• 29:40
Speaker 3: And it just seems hypocritical that I can go to
• 29:43
Speaker 3: all these schools and get charter schools, homes school, dada da,
• 29:46
Speaker 3: but now I can't play extracurricular activities in those school
• 29:49
Speaker 3: when I have school choice. So I'm just saying it's
• 29:52
Speaker 3: not as streamline as a linear as what people think.
• 29:56
Speaker 3: But but it can't be off the rails. There has
• 30:00
Speaker 3: to be some sort of well guidelines around the guideline.
• 30:04
Speaker 3: Call already they're shaking.
• 30:07
Speaker 4: The guideline is if you transfer, you got to sit out.
• 30:11
Speaker 5: You still get the transfer, Yeah, you still get the goal,
• 30:14
Speaker 5: but you got to sit out of here.
• 30:17
  Speaker 3: I think there's there's insinuating circumstances. So I mean, you're
• 30:20
Speaker 3: help with that. That just means like there's a there's
• 30:23
Speaker 3: a legitimate reason why I need to transfer.
• 30:25
Speaker 4: Okay, what what could what possibly could that be? I mean, well,
• 30:29
Speaker 4: what if your coach left? What if? What if you
• 30:30
Speaker 4: in high school your coach get fired? What if your boss?
• 30:35
Speaker 3: We'll teach you how what happens when your boss leaves
• 30:37
Speaker 3: and you get a new boss. You learn you've got
• 30:41
  Speaker 3: to stay.
• 30:41
  Speaker 4: At a job.
• 30:41
Speaker 3: You can quit your job, you can quit your you
• 30:43
Speaker 3: can quit the game. Nah man, Yeah, I'm just saying
• 30:47
  Speaker 3: that's legitimate.
• 30:48
Speaker 4: No it is not.
• 30:50
Speaker 3: What if what if there's accusation of sexism or racism
• 30:53
Speaker 3: or bully, it does a whole host.
• 30:55
Speaker 4: Is a coach issue. Now we get the coach, kids
• 30:57
Speaker 4: still stay, we get rid of the coach, we bring
• 30:59
Speaker 4: another coach in. Now that's that promise is what if?
• 31:02
Speaker 3: Again, the accusation doesn't mean there's gonna be a conviction.
• 31:06
Speaker 3: So if I if I have an active I'm saying, look,
• 31:08
Speaker 3: this coach is racist to me, this coach is sexist,
• 31:10
Speaker 3: taught me whatever, And it's in and for the investigation,
• 31:14
Speaker 3: the criminal part of it, that's unfound. But I still
• 31:17
Speaker 3: have these claims. And I'm saying extreme situations. I'm saying
• 31:23
  Speaker 3: I'm not saying I give you, I give you, I
• 31:25
Speaker 3: give you something like that, I give you something like that.
• 31:30
Speaker 3: But there is there is something that's called community. Okay,
• 31:36
Speaker 3: you you know this. You know as a politician, you
• 31:39
  Speaker 3: know this.
• 31:40
Speaker 4: So to me, the community in which I grew up in,
• 31:44
Speaker 4: that I live in, that's where I'm supposed to go.
• 31:50
Speaker 3: Now, I might want to know that. Are kids making
• 31:56
Speaker 3: a decision or is it us? I think what I'm
• 31:58
Speaker 3: saying is like even I think adults is making these
• 32:00
Speaker 3: bad decisions. I'm glad you said they were bad because
• 32:04
Speaker 3: because here's the thing. Once you are in the community,
• 32:09
Speaker 3: you live in the community, you you play in your community,
• 32:14
Speaker 3: you go to school in your community, you play in
• 32:15
Speaker 3: your community. That is what you That's how you understand
• 32:19
Speaker 3: loyalty to that that community.
• 32:21
Speaker 4: And I'm with you on that.
• 32:22
Speaker 3: But what I'm saying is that those sort of that
• 32:25
Speaker 3: sort of characterization is not what it is now. No,
• 32:29
Speaker 3: because because that that top athlete in the community.
• 32:35
Speaker 4: Believes he can go she can.
• 32:36
Speaker 5: Go wherever they want because they want the best quote,
• 32:41
Speaker 5: the best opportunity in their in a in anybody's commun
• 32:46
Speaker 5: don't think kids look at it like that. No more,
• 32:48
Speaker 5: don't go you know here's what I went to. But no, no,
• 32:53
Speaker 5: you didn't transfer to it. You didn't say that.
• 32:55
Speaker 3: I want to trans transfer to a losing school. But
• 32:57
Speaker 3: that's that's different. What I'm saying, though, is that at
• 33:00
Speaker 3: a young at a young age, we're seeing now and
• 33:03
Speaker 3: we and your part of this as far as you
• 33:05
Speaker 3: know all about this. Kids can't even play in the
• 33:08
Speaker 3: local leagues no more so. Kids are not looking at
• 33:11
Speaker 3: these things through the lens and the eyes in which
• 33:13
Speaker 3: we looked at them. If you're an adult's telling a
• 33:17
Speaker 3: local team that they can't play in local leagues or
• 33:20
Speaker 3: they can't play in this league, that these are adults
• 33:22
Speaker 3: making this decisions. Right, we got teams, we got individuals
• 33:26
Speaker 3: with the perliferation of like au basketball, different things of
• 33:30
Speaker 3: that nature. So the guys in which these kids are
• 33:32
Speaker 3: looking at it, they're not looking at it from a
• 33:34
Speaker 3: community standpoint. They're looking at it from like what what
• 33:38
Speaker 3: best fits me? Or what's the situation that I want
• 33:41
Speaker 3: to be put myself in? And a lot of that
• 33:42
Speaker 3: I'm not saying some of that is selfish, and some
• 33:45
Speaker 3: of that has been dictated by bad behavior of adults.
• 33:49
Speaker 4: But how many times can a kid go to another school?
• 33:52
Speaker 4: I mean that's I know some young in three schools.
• 33:55
Speaker 5: I'm like man and and two and to the adults
• 34:01
Speaker 5: that are listening, who who are fixing, promoting opportunity to
• 34:10
Speaker 5: go somewhere else, do something else, play for another.
• 34:13
Speaker 4: Team, get one good team, and then we dominate all that.
• 34:18
Speaker 4: You're wrong. You're not helping the structure, You're not helping
• 34:21
Speaker 4: the system, You're not helping the kids. Like yes, because.
• 34:26
Speaker 5: At the end of the day, the structure and the
• 34:30
Speaker 5: system that sports presents to a child is to work
• 34:36
Speaker 5: hard and find some piece not greatness, some piece of achievement,
• 34:43
Speaker 5: some growth, something that just lets you know that you
• 34:46
Speaker 5: just got a little bit better.
• 34:47
Speaker 3: But kids will look at you and say, well, I
• 34:49
Speaker 3: can do that going to five different schools. I mean
• 34:51
Speaker 3: even if you look at the heroes that kids look
• 34:53
Speaker 3: up to now at the college level, Man, we know
• 34:56
Speaker 3: college athletes and been like five different schools. The whole
• 34:59
Speaker 3: Indiana Championship football team, they had been the average I
• 35:04
Speaker 3: think it's two to three schools because we're thirty years old.
• 35:08
Speaker 3: But so kids is looking up to that up they
• 35:11
Speaker 3: was now. But what I'm saying though, is with you, Okay,
• 35:18
Speaker 3: adults have made bad structural decisions, systematic decisions at the
• 35:22
Speaker 3: youth level, the middle school level.
• 35:24
Speaker 4: And then if I'm a kid.
• 35:25
Speaker 3: I'm looking up to college athletes, and all these college athletes,
• 35:28
Speaker 3: they ain't been the ones who the ain't like the
• 35:30
Speaker 3: major hairs is of Carley Well. We we romanticized that
• 35:34
Speaker 3: they was at one school. So everything around the kid
• 35:36
Speaker 3: is telling you do what's best for you. It ain't
• 35:40
Speaker 3: just the kid, but we know they're thinking that. But
• 35:43
Speaker 3: we all been through that system.
• 35:45
Speaker 5: Why are we not turning around and telling them, hey,
• 35:47
Speaker 5: that's not really the right system.
• 35:50
Speaker 4: Do you think it's.
• 35:50
Speaker 5: Fair that South Charleston's girls don't have a girls basketball team?
• 35:54
Speaker 4: Awful? It was terrible, Like come from where it came from? Who?
• 35:59
Speaker 4: And do you think any of the teams that the
• 36:02
Speaker 4: girls went to that was recruited there went there or whatever?
• 36:08
Speaker 4: Do you think they care? I don't know.
• 36:11
Speaker 3: I mean I would probably not. I mean, they just
• 36:12
Speaker 3: handle their own business because I know them wanted to
• 36:16
Speaker 3: stay there. They wanted to play for South Charleston but couldn't,
• 36:18
Speaker 3: so they had to go.
• 36:19
  Speaker 4: I'm saying.
• 36:20
Speaker 3: So I'm saying someone saying situations like that too. We
• 36:22
Speaker 3: could add that like if you maybe your team don't
• 36:26
Speaker 3: get filled that year, then you could should be able
• 36:28
Speaker 3: to go somewhere else.
• 36:29
Speaker 4: To place. I'm like, I'm one hundred percent with that,
• 36:33
Speaker 4: but we stopped it on the front end.
• 36:36
Speaker 3: So what would be your rule change? How would you
• 36:38
Speaker 3: fix it? What would be your the rule that you
• 36:39
Speaker 3: would impl play where you live? So you're saying, no
• 36:42
Speaker 3: transfer from middle school to high school. Why, I'm just asking.
• 36:46
Speaker 3: I ain't trying to I'm just saying, what would be
• 36:47
  Speaker 3: your rule?
• 36:48
  Speaker 5: I don't see, I don't I don't see. I don't
• 36:50
Speaker 5: see a reason. And and the reasons that comes to
• 36:54
Speaker 5: my mind is, well, when I go from I leave
• 36:56
Speaker 5: middle school, I'm gonna go to the high school. Well
• 36:58
Speaker 5: the high school they they're not very good, so I'm
• 37:01
Speaker 5: gonna go somewhere. So what would be your rule?
• 37:03
Speaker 4: So I think that you you are when you're in
• 37:06
Speaker 4: the structure, when you're in the system, you're in the
• 37:08
Speaker 4: South Charleston system. You go to you go to elementary,
• 37:12
Speaker 4: middle school, high school.
• 37:14
Speaker 3: So you're saying the only transfer is to like emergency
• 37:16
Speaker 3: singuating circus if you move or if you move, if
• 37:19
Speaker 3: you no, just if you I'm saying, if there's like
• 37:22
Speaker 3: we just said it's emergency, there's an emergency situation, then
• 37:25
Speaker 3: I'm okay with that. And and people are gonna say, oh,
• 37:28
  Speaker 3: that's old school, that's old.
• 37:30
Speaker 4: That's that's too strict. Why is that what you went through?
• 37:38
  Speaker 3: It?
• 37:39
  Speaker 4: It wasn't.
• 37:39
Speaker 3: You didn't feel like you were being suffocated and you
• 37:43
  Speaker 3: were stuck.
• 37:44
Speaker 4: I didn't ever think I was stuck at South Charleston.
• 37:46
Speaker 3: But you didn't have the eyes that was you can
• 37:48
Speaker 3: see everything. That's another thing we got in factory with
• 37:51
Speaker 3: this value. You can see the world things I'm seeing
• 37:54
  Speaker 3: with everybody.
• 37:55
Speaker 4: Two things. Hold on, let me what would be your rule?
• 38:00
Speaker 5: You get one transfer, but you gotta go to the
• 38:02
Speaker 5: high school. You've gotta go to half Yeah, you gotta
• 38:05
Speaker 5: check it out if you like, so you gotta go
• 38:07
Speaker 5: to your feeder. Yes, you get one. Then you're done.
• 38:09
Speaker 5: You can't move because here's the thing. South Charlest is
• 38:13
Speaker 5: lower than the middle school level. The boys but undefeated.
• 38:19
  Speaker 4: Ball.
• 38:21
Speaker 5: But I asked around are they going to the high
• 38:24
Speaker 5: school and most of them said no.
• 38:26
  Speaker 4: That crushes me.
• 38:27
Speaker 5: Same thing with with with Dupop Dupop boys basketball team
• 38:34
Speaker 5: last year, undefeated, heck of a team. They went different ways,
• 38:38
Speaker 5: not saying this is right or wrong. It just crushed me.
• 38:41
Speaker 5: As like carl say, the community of it that you
• 38:44
Speaker 5: do all this work in middle school, you go undefeeded.
• 38:47
Speaker 4: Then these girls just go or these young men just
• 38:49
  Speaker 4: go different ways.
• 38:50
Speaker 5: I just think you gotta try out the school, because
• 38:53
Speaker 5: if you don't try it out, you can anybody can
• 38:56
  Speaker 5: say whatever, if I don't, if I don't want you
• 38:58
Speaker 5: to go to South Charles, I'm saying such such, such,
• 39:00
Speaker 5: such a terrible come over here with me. But if
• 39:02
Speaker 5: you go there and like it, Actually the school, I'm
• 39:03
Speaker 5: not saying this call because he's sitting there. Actually South
• 39:05
Speaker 5: Charlest is pretty dope school. So people will argue. So
• 39:10
Speaker 5: people will argue on the other side of that and
• 39:11
Speaker 5: say to your point. If you're saying, well, you can
• 39:14
Speaker 5: transfer if you move, people will argue, well, that's that's
• 39:16
Speaker 5: a socioeconomic issue, because if dad and mom got a
• 39:19
Speaker 5: little paper then they could just if we want to
• 39:22
Speaker 5: go to GW, we want the West Side, we could
• 39:24
Speaker 5: just go rent an apartment up here, and that happened,
• 39:27
Speaker 5: And so people will say that's socioeconomic. So now if
• 39:30
  Speaker 5: I'm if i'm if I don't have the resources, then
• 39:33
Speaker 5: I'm stuck with where I'm at. But I think that
• 39:35
Speaker 5: I think there's also the opportunity too, if you wanted
• 39:39
Speaker 5: to justify what that move was for.
• 39:43
Speaker 4: Did you get another job? Did you do like the people.
• 39:46
Speaker 3: I ain't saying people just buy they got the house,
• 39:49
Speaker 3: So there is no justification other than you just want
• 39:51
Speaker 3: your kid to go to the Yes, I totally understand that,
• 39:54
Speaker 3: but I'm saying that there there still is opportunity to
• 39:57
Speaker 3: verify what the move was, why the move was.
• 40:01
  Speaker 4: And again.
• 40:04
Speaker 3: I and I probably have never really said this, but man,
• 40:09
Speaker 3: I loved South Charleston.
• 40:12
Speaker 4: And we didn't win. We didn't win, we didn't win
• 40:15
Speaker 4: the championship, but I loved it.
• 40:18
Speaker 5: You know why because me and about five six, seven
• 40:21
Speaker 5: eight other people walked to school every single day.
• 40:26
Speaker 4: Together. And I remember that.
• 40:31
Speaker 5: These kids don't have that, and they don't and and
• 40:34
Speaker 5: and that value, that importance to me, those are things
• 40:40
Speaker 5: that are important. Those guys that I played with at
• 40:43
Speaker 5: Marshall at South Charleston, man, I like I'm talking to
• 40:47
Speaker 5: some of these dudes, like I'm still talking to these guys.
• 40:50
Speaker 4: You go to a place you ain't.
• 40:52
Speaker 5: Really making a whole lot of friends, and brother Charleston
• 40:54
Speaker 5: didn't want me. Charleston would have never taken me. Stonewall
• 40:58
Speaker 5: would have never taken me. No, they would not have,
• 41:02
Speaker 5: but they wanted you, bro.
• 41:03
  Speaker 4: I don't want it.
• 41:04
  Speaker 5: I didn't want none of them to play. I don't
• 41:06
Speaker 5: want none of them to play on my team. I
• 41:08
Speaker 5: want to play against you.
• 41:10
Speaker 4: I want that, I want I want to test that.
• 41:13
Speaker 3: But I but again, it goes back to what I'm saying.
• 41:15
Speaker 3: It's like if you're starting at the youth level and
• 41:18
Speaker 3: all of a sudden, we've seen it in the youth
• 41:21
Speaker 3: basketball where they don't want certain teams playing all star games.
• 41:25
Speaker 3: We definitely see it in youth football. It's been the
• 41:27
Speaker 3: worst ever. It's like the competition element is sucked, dried
• 41:30
Speaker 3: up because it's starting with adults. So it's like, until
• 41:33
Speaker 3: we took in my conjecture, until we fix structural problems
• 41:38
Speaker 3: here and I don't know how it is nowhere else.
• 41:40
Speaker 3: I'm saying, just here in the valley. Until we fix
• 41:43
Speaker 3: those structural problems, these other problems is gonna manifest later.
• 41:48
Speaker 3: Until we until we start to fix the youth sports
• 41:51
Speaker 3: and just the mentality around that, the middle school and
• 41:55
Speaker 3: all that stuff, these other problems gonna gonna come to
• 41:58
Speaker 3: the surf. You got to get the kick, you got
• 42:00
Speaker 3: to get the coaches out of the room.
• 42:02
Speaker 4: I think the parents too.
• 42:04
Speaker 3: Yes, you need the coaches out of the room, and
• 42:06
Speaker 3: you need the and and the parents out of the room.
• 42:09
Speaker 3: And you need someone a group of folks who can
• 42:13
Speaker 3: understand the reality of what we're trying to create with
• 42:17
Speaker 3: these with the sport, with football, with basketball, with baseball,
• 42:23
Speaker 3: what do what do we want for our young kids
• 42:26
Speaker 3: to get from the sport? And I think to shout
• 42:29
Speaker 3: out to west Side Soccer. And I'm not just saying
• 42:31
Speaker 3: because our kids play, but I just to me, that's
• 42:34
Speaker 3: the model. They they got the best system in my opinion.
• 42:38
Speaker 3: I second, I've seen like it's one hundred percent about
• 42:42
Speaker 3: the kids. It's not about adults. You don't have parents
• 42:45
Speaker 3: that are yelling, going crazy or trying to you know,
• 42:47
Speaker 3: go off at the games. It's it's one hundred percent
• 42:50
Speaker 3: about development and about the kids. And I think we
• 42:55
Speaker 3: got to get even to to to to some level,
• 42:59
Speaker 3: particularly at the youth level.
• 43:00
Speaker 4: I think we even got to get winning kind of
• 43:02
Speaker 4: out the way. I think. So you know what I'm saying,
• 43:03
Speaker 4: it's just about development, you know what I mean. I
• 43:06
  Speaker 4: think that I.
• 43:06
Speaker 3: Think in youth sports, the youngest and the next level
• 43:11
  Speaker 3: should just play.
• 43:13
Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, so many plays, so many plays.
• 43:18
Speaker 3: You can get touchdowns, you know, but you ain't gotta
• 43:20
Speaker 3: it don't matter about winning and losing. But what you're
• 43:22
Speaker 3: doing is you're trying to develop the lineman. You're trying
• 43:24
Speaker 3: to develop the receivers and the running backs and quarterbacks getting.
• 43:28
Speaker 4: Good handoffs and and all those kind of things. Your
• 43:30
Speaker 4: defensive players. You're you're just trying to do that. Then
• 43:33
Speaker 4: when you go to quote the B team, you give
• 43:36
Speaker 4: him a little bit more. And then when you go
• 43:39
Speaker 4: to the A team, let's go because you getting ready
• 43:41
  Speaker 4: for middle school.
• 43:42
Speaker 5: Now, yeah, now let me ask you a question. You
• 43:44
Speaker 5: played at the highest level, oh pro, will you let
• 43:47
Speaker 5: your grandson play football?
• 43:48
Speaker 4: Right now? Under like the situation, I would, I would
• 43:52
Speaker 4: let him. I would let him play.
• 43:54
Speaker 3: And but I'll say this, Fortunately, he doesn't want to play.
• 44:00
Speaker 4: And I'm happy with that. So you're not you're not
• 44:02
Speaker 4: like the not all, not at all.
• 44:10
Speaker 3: I don't even care if he watches it. I don't care,
• 44:13
Speaker 3: Like he don't need you know, I have no I
• 44:18
Speaker 3: have no interest in my my grandson playing any sports.
• 44:22
Speaker 3: My son didn't play, and he played a little bit
• 44:26
Speaker 3: in Minnesota, but he didn't play long and and he
• 44:29
Speaker 3: only got one quite quit that was and that was it.
• 44:34
Speaker 3: Ain't no come back, No, ain't no comeback. But my
• 44:37
Speaker 3: grandson is so good in academics. I can't there would
• 44:45
Speaker 3: be I'd be stupid. I slapped myself to worry about
• 44:48
Speaker 3: what what else he's gonna do?
• 44:51
Speaker 4: You get? You get a's all the time. Go go
• 44:55
  Speaker 4: do that.
• 44:55
Speaker 5: That's my neighbor. I got a question for you before
• 44:59
Speaker 5: I know, Delegate. With the NIL deals now in middle
• 45:03
Speaker 5: school and high school? How do that work with the
• 45:06
  Speaker 5: transferring thing?
• 45:08
Speaker 4: With the bill? How do that?
• 45:10
Speaker 5: Just say, all right, I'm doing the extreme. This school
• 45:14
Speaker 5: got ten thousand dollars for Payton and I need that
• 45:17
  Speaker 5: ten bands.
• 45:18
Speaker 4: I need. You know what I'm saying. I'm struggling over here.
• 45:21
Speaker 4: And how do that work with the bill? Where now
• 45:24
Speaker 4: you can pay kids to go to middle school and
• 45:26
  Speaker 4: high school?
• 45:27
Speaker 3: The thing is the payments aren't coming from the school,
• 45:30
Speaker 3: so the schools aren't affiliated with the NIL deals. So
• 45:35
Speaker 3: the NIL deals is third party deal. So if you're
• 45:38
Speaker 3: like a good athlete, you know, you good soccer player
• 45:40
Speaker 3: or something to that effect, and some car company wants
• 45:43
Speaker 3: you to do a commercial, you would be able to
• 45:44
Speaker 3: do it. And in fact, you couldn't even have the
• 45:47
Speaker 3: bill stands now, which kind of nullifies to me the
• 45:51
Speaker 3: whole purpose of it. Has the bill bill stands now,
• 45:55
Speaker 3: you couldn't even have like paraphernalia of the school and
• 45:58
Speaker 3: what you go to. So if you go to GDP,
• 46:00
Speaker 3: you can't have like the Patriot or nothing like that,
• 46:02
Speaker 3: So it can't be a fear. You can't use like
• 46:04
Speaker 3: your like your clips from you know, your highlight film.
• 46:08
Speaker 3: It's part of that promotion. So it's really just the
• 46:11
Speaker 3: way it's tru it's not it's not affiliated with the
• 46:16
Speaker 3: school on what you're going to because and and again
• 46:19
Speaker 3: I brought up the argument, well, you know, the point
• 46:21
Speaker 3: of me being able to like, the reason why I
• 46:25
Speaker 3: would even get that sort of attention where somebody would
• 46:27
Speaker 3: want to pay me is based off of my performance
• 46:30
  Speaker 3: on the.
• 46:32
  Speaker 4: Now.
• 46:32
Speaker 3: Again, that's one part of it. The other part of
• 46:36
Speaker 3: it is that I may be liking shout out to
• 46:38
Speaker 3: him and this is his name, so this ain't me
• 46:40
Speaker 3: saying that white boy m just for you. He went
• 46:43
Speaker 3: to South Charleston High School, he played sports at one time.
• 46:46
Speaker 3: So somebody like that, who is really social media star
• 46:51
Speaker 3: but just but just so happened to play sports, he
• 46:55
Speaker 3: would be right no matter how good he good he
• 46:57
Speaker 3: is on the on the football field, he was a
• 46:59
Speaker 3: person that probably would be right to get a bunch
• 47:02
Speaker 3: of in io deal because he has a big social
• 47:04
Speaker 3: media follow So I say all that to say that
• 47:07
Speaker 3: I think the way in which is set up is
• 47:09
Speaker 3: almost like you have to have like the social media
• 47:12
Speaker 3: part of you gotta have another part and you just
• 47:15
Speaker 3: so happen to play sports, gotcha. So that's the way
• 47:17
Speaker 3: the West Virginia system is set up. It's not something
• 47:19
Speaker 3: where you're gonna get directly paid from the school itself. Now, again,
• 47:24
Speaker 3: the third part of that is that you could end
• 47:27
Speaker 3: up in a situation if let's say the transfer you
• 47:30
Speaker 3: have freedom to transfer wherever. You could end up in
• 47:34
Speaker 3: a situation where maybe you got some guy who just
• 47:37
Speaker 3: loves his high school. Maybe he owned a car dealership,
• 47:39
Speaker 3: or maybe he got housing or something like that. You
• 47:41
Speaker 3: could say, yea, I'm gonna give you an n idea
• 47:43
Speaker 3: in io deal. You get this car when you come
• 47:46
Speaker 3: to this school. Essentially, you know what I'm saying. So
• 47:50
Speaker 3: it could so it could get tricky, you know what
• 47:53
  Speaker 3: I mean?
• 47:53
Speaker 4: They used to call it a green handshake.
• 47:59
Speaker 5: Isn't that gonna have to be a whole lot of
• 48:01
Speaker 5: like policing, policing, but in that structure.
• 48:05
Speaker 3: But if you think about it, for I would say
• 48:08
Speaker 3: ninety percent of them who's probably not doing anything shady.
• 48:11
Speaker 3: Your ROI, your return on investment for giving some kid
• 48:15
Speaker 3: some you know, money for your T shirt company, it
• 48:18
Speaker 3: probably ain't going. It would have to be a hell
• 48:20
Speaker 3: of a return investment for me to pay you fifteen
• 48:23
Speaker 3: twenty grand to do some promotion for me.
• 48:25
  Speaker 4: I need I need.
• 48:26
Speaker 3: If I'm going to invest twenty I probably need one
• 48:28
Speaker 3: hundred and fifty back off then, right, you know what
• 48:30
Speaker 3: I'm saying. So for most companies and for most people,
• 48:33
Speaker 3: if you're not doing anything shady, you probably ain't gonna
• 48:35
Speaker 3: get no nil deal at least not to that, not
• 48:38
Speaker 3: to that grandiose level. You might get a couple dollars
• 48:40
Speaker 3: here and there, but you're not gonna get anything huge
• 48:43
Speaker 3: because it's no ROI.
• 48:46
Speaker 4: All right, you got anything? Yes?
• 48:47
Speaker 5: Okay, go ahead, I got the coach's name that that
• 48:50
Speaker 5: we want to bring on the shews y'all show. I
• 48:52
Speaker 5: just want to ask them or all right, Jared pardon
• 48:55
Speaker 5: or pattern for Greenbrier East, Ronnie Olsen Shady Springs, Matt
• 49:00
Speaker 5: Smith Princeton, and Brett Tolliver pike View.
• 49:04
Speaker 4: If y'all listening, please call call her Hollis and come
• 49:07
Speaker 4: up here because I got a question. How can you
• 49:10
  Speaker 4: vote a.
• 49:10
Speaker 5: Team that won three games over a team that won seventeen?
• 49:15
Speaker 4: Got that question? I can? I can.
• 49:16
Speaker 3: Probably my wife's from green Brier East, so I might
• 49:21
Speaker 3: be able to try to get.
• 49:24
Speaker 4: Big Gym on the show, Big Sener the Gym with
• 49:28
  Speaker 4: baby Dog.
• 49:31
Speaker 3: All. I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna close out by
• 49:35
Speaker 3: by for for everybody who's gonna listen to this show
• 49:40
Speaker 3: and gonna hear all of the things that they that
• 49:43
Speaker 3: we've said today. Trust me when I tell you that
• 49:49
Speaker 3: mine comes from a passion that love sports, and I
• 49:55
Speaker 3: look at it in its in its best way, and
• 50:00
Speaker 3: I don't want to lose the game for the sake
• 50:04
Speaker 3: of money, for the sake of fame or any of that.
• 50:10
Speaker 3: And I just think that when we when we start
• 50:12
Speaker 3: looking and starting trying to put laws bylaws in for
• 50:18
Speaker 3: young kids and all of that.
• 50:21
Speaker 4: Don't forget the game.
• 50:23
Speaker 5: Don't forget the game, because the game is bigger than
• 50:29
Speaker 5: your child. It's the it's the path. It's the path
• 50:34
Speaker 5: that took me to where I am.
• 50:37
Speaker 4: So don't don't just be about your kids. Understand that
• 50:43
Speaker 4: there has to be some regulations, there have to be rules,
• 50:46
Speaker 4: there have to be things that they have to follow,
• 50:48
Speaker 4: because in professional sports, one of the key components is
• 50:54
  Speaker 4: following direction, doing.
• 50:58
Speaker 5: What they tell you to do. That's Hollis. I'm going
• 51:04
Speaker 5: to assume your job is about doing what is right.
• 51:08
Speaker 3: Yeah, we got structure. You got structure at a couple
• 51:10
Speaker 3: of different levels. Yes, what he would structure. I got
• 51:16
Speaker 3: in trouble last week. Follow the structure about what's up?
• 51:21
Speaker 5: I mean, so understand, please just understand that you can't
• 51:27
Speaker 5: erase the structure in sports for the benefit of the
• 51:31
Speaker 5: money and the benefit of your household or any of that.
• 51:35
Speaker 4: Let sports be sports and get in it. Just join
• 51:38
Speaker 4: it and be part of it. Don't try to change it,
• 51:41
Speaker 4: don't make it anything. Just take your journey through the
• 51:45
Speaker 4: sport that your child is in and do the best
• 51:48
  Speaker 4: you can.
• 51:49
Speaker 5: Hollis, I think you said something on the floor about that,
• 51:51
Speaker 5: like sports saved you.
• 51:53
Speaker 3: Definitely, man, sports, I mean, that's indicative. That's why Again,
• 51:57
Speaker 3: people may not like this point, but I'm not when
• 52:01
Speaker 3: it comes to like, I know, when I went to
• 52:03
Speaker 3: high school, academics was like second. It was socialization, it
• 52:08
Speaker 3: was academics, and it was sports. And to me, it's
• 52:12
Speaker 3: not always just about academics because some people, you may
• 52:15
Speaker 3: go to school just to play in the band. You
• 52:17
Speaker 3: may go to school just to be a major at
• 52:20
Speaker 3: that may be the activity. Or you may go to
• 52:22
Speaker 3: school just to be on the chess team that you
• 52:25
Speaker 3: may go to school just to get a free lunch.
• 52:27
Speaker 3: That may be the thing that carries you on, and
• 52:31
Speaker 3: then you start to manipulate and pick up the other
• 52:34
Speaker 3: stuff later. I knew my sophomore year in college. I
• 52:36
Speaker 3: was like, man, I ain't going to the NFL. I
• 52:37
Speaker 3: don't really want to do this too much longer.
• 52:40
Speaker 4: Yeah, let me go.
• 52:42
Speaker 3: I still play, but I'm like, let me go, just
• 52:43
Speaker 3: focus on these academics. And I went from just being
• 52:46
Speaker 3: an average student to be on the Deeds list. Every
• 52:49
Speaker 3: semester after that, Literally every semester after that, I was
• 52:52
Speaker 3: on the Dean's list because I just made that decision.
• 52:54
Speaker 4: I was the college coach, high school coach. I was
• 52:58
  Speaker 4: their worst athlete.
• 53:02
Speaker 5: Why because bride didn't want nothing but football school. I
• 53:06
Speaker 5: just tried to get through it because I wanted to
• 53:09
  Speaker 5: play football.
• 53:11
Speaker 4: And it took me.
• 53:12
Speaker 3: It took me midway through college to understand, well, what
• 53:16
Speaker 3: if I don't make it, what am I gonna do?
• 53:19
Speaker 3: Then Sonny Randall, Bob Pruitty, they got me through. They
• 53:26
Speaker 3: got into my head and made me get through. Mom
• 53:29
Speaker 3: was going crazy. Mom was going crazy.
• 53:32
Speaker 5: And so I am the epitome of understanding exactly the
• 53:38
Speaker 5: opposite of what you're saying.
• 53:40
Speaker 3: I'm that dude. I'm that dude, and I'm telling you
• 53:44
Speaker 3: it ain't the right way. But I'm saying I disagree
• 53:48
Speaker 3: with that. I say, like it's your way. Not everybody's
• 53:51
Speaker 3: path is going to be the same, and it's important
• 53:54
Speaker 3: that we provide our kids a bunch of different paths
• 53:57
Speaker 3: because again, somebody may not be math, English and signs,
• 54:00
Speaker 3: but you go take them to carve it and they
• 54:01
  Speaker 3: all start.
• 54:02
Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying.
• 54:03
Speaker 3: Somebody may not be, you know, nothing, on any quarter field,
• 54:07
Speaker 3: but in that science and that geometry class, they going nuts.
• 54:10
Speaker 3: So we education is not this this piggy hole like
• 54:14
Speaker 3: we try to fit it into. Education is on the
• 54:17
Speaker 3: football field, because I say this, as far as my
• 54:20
Speaker 3: education in high school, I learned the most on the
• 54:22
Speaker 3: football field. That was the primary that was that was
• 54:26
Speaker 3: the most. I'm not talking about just you know, the
• 54:28
Speaker 3: x's and those of it. I mean just the lessons
• 54:30
Speaker 3: that are around it. Right, So that was the primary
• 54:33
Speaker 3: source of my education during that time. So we can't
• 54:36
Speaker 3: necessarily just say those things important. We have those structures
• 54:39
Speaker 3: in place for a reason, and we have to give
• 54:40
Speaker 3: our kids every single outlet opportunity possible for them to
• 54:45
Speaker 3: you know, matriculate into the future.
• 54:48
Speaker 4: I'll give you that. All right.
• 54:51
Speaker 3: Well, ladies and gentlemen, we're gonna get out of here
• 54:52
Speaker 3: today and thank you whatddy. We appreciate what you in here.
• 54:56
Speaker 3: Hope them coaches call. I don't know about that. We'll
• 55:01
Speaker 3: be talking a long time. All right, We're out of here.
