- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Have you ever tried to hold your breath for too long?
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: My family each year would travel to Virginia Beach.
- 0:10And anyone who has ever gone to Virginia Beach from this area
- 0:15knows that you have
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: to go through a very long tunnel.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: All right, getting some nods.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: And the game that you play
- 0:24if you're a kid,
- 0:24when you go through that tunnel,
- 0:26is hold your breath all the way through.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Anybody ever do that?
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Oh yes, thank you very much.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: So you know that feeling as you're getting about halfway,
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: three quarters of the way through that Virginia beach tunnel.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Eventually,
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: your chest begins to tighten,
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: your head starts to spin,
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: and every fiber in your body longs to exhale.
- 0:58The feeling of relief when your air finally escapes reminds us
- 1:04that release is not
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: only good,
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: but it is necessary in our lives.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: We live in a culture that rewards holding on.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Hang in there, baby.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Holding on to our possessions, our opinions, our grudges, and our fears.
- 1:27But the gospel calls us to a different rhythm,
- 1:33and it is the rhythm of release.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Harmut Rosa says,
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: wrote a book called The Uncontrollability of the World.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: And in it,
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: he observes that the modern life that we live,
- 1:47and I would argue it seems like it's kind of always been like
- 1:51this because we see
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: references to it in the gospel this morning,
- 1:56that people are obsessed with making everything in their lives
- 2:01controllable,
- 2:02predictable and efficient we try to control our time we try to
- 2:08control outcomes and
- 2:10we try to control our relationships there is an algorithm these
- 2:16days for everything
- 2:19including ovens believe it or not just bought a new oven it has
- 2:24an algorithm in it
- 2:25and it hooks to the wi-fi don't know why that's necessary but i
- 2:29don't know we'll
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: figure it out as we go along
- 2:32In his book,
- 2:33he writes this,
- 2:34the world becomes mute when we try to make it controllable.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: In other words,
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: when everything is managed,
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: we lose our capacity for wonder,
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: surprise,
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: amazement,
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: and what he calls resonance with the world,
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: creation,
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: and others in it.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: And I would add, we lose resonance with the divine.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Jesus invites us to recover that resonance,
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: that oneness with God,
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: creation,
- 3:16and humanity to loosen our grip so that we can once again hear
- 3:23the living voice of
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: God in our lives.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: So as we continue this journey through our money story,
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: which is the series that we're engaged in right now,
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: we move from remembering last week to releasing this week.
- 3:46The first scripture for this morning is found in Deuteronomy
- 3:50chapter 15,
- 3:51one through 11.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: And in those verses,
- 3:55we learn that every seven years that the people of Israel were
- 3:59commanded to cancel
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: all debts in their culture.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: It was called the year of release.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Can you imagine that?
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: No bank foreclosures.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: No debt collector.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: No relentless interest payments on credit cards.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: And most importantly, no systemic poverty.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: This was not an economic loophole.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: It was a spiritual practice for the people of Israel.
- 4:43God knew how quickly human beings can forget that everything in
- 4:48our lives and in
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: our world is a gift.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: So God built release into the rhythm of community life.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: So that neither wealth nor poverty...
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: would harden into permanent systems of abuse and lack.
- 5:12When the Israelites left Egypt,
- 5:14they carried the memory of slavery in their bones.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Pharaoh's economy had defined them.
- 5:24It was an economy of endless production,
- 5:28hoarding,
- 5:30exploitation,
- 5:31extraction,
- 5:33and fear.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: There we go.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: But now,
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: as the Israelites move into the wilderness,
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: God is inviting them to live into a new story.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: A story of enough.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Systemic release was God's antidote to Egypt's anxiety.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: What would it look like
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: If our world practiced that kind of release,
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: imagine student loan forgiven,
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: medical debts erased,
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: predatory lending dismantled.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: Imagine rest for exhausted people and land.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: that's allowed to breathe.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: That is not fantasy.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: It's God's dream of jubilee.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: In Matthew chapter 19,
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: verses 16 through 22,
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: we meet a wealthy man who comes to Jesus asking,
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: what must I do to have eternal life?
- 7:06He comes knowing he's moral,
- 7:08he's successful,
- 7:10he's religious,
- 7:11he's wealthy.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: But we also learn that he is restless.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: And Jesus names the commandments about relationships,
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: honor your parents,
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: love your neighbor,
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: and then he adds one more thing.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Sell your possessions, give to the poor, and follow me.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: And in the story, we learn that the man goes away grieving.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: He just can't let go.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: And the strategy of this story is not that he is rich.
- 7:50It is that his wealth and the control of his life and his
- 7:55environment that it
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: provided had captured his heart.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: He had confused possessions with purpose,
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: security with salvation,
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: and personal piety with true discipleship.
- 8:15He had built a fortress so tight around his life that not even
- 8:20joy could get in.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: We read this and we shake our heads.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: But if we are honest, we know that feeling, right?
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: We clutch at our calendars,
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: our savings account,
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: our habits of control,
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: and we tell ourselves that we are just being responsible.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: But many times, it's really that we are being afraid.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: When we try to make life controllable,
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: when we measure worth by productivity or possessions,
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: we become alienated from life itself.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: The rich man's sorrow is the ache of disconnection.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: His abundance had become armor.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: His grasping had silenced the divine song.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: But Jesus does not shame the man.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: He loves him.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: In Mark's version of this story,
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: Jesus says,
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: the scripture says that Jesus looked at him and loved him.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Love invites us to release.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: Not because God wants to take from us, but because God wants to free us.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: The Hebrew word for release literally means to open the hand.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: Think about that image right there.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: The difference between a clenched fist and an open palm.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: A clenched fist cannot receive a gift, nor can it give one.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: Only an open hand can.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: In her poem, Sarah Eyre writes this.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: I want to practice release.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: Removing the stones that weigh down my wing.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: Stones of fear, shame, and grief.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: Stones that build walls between you and me.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: That is the invitation of this week, to practice release.
- 10:49Because releasing isn't a one-time event,
- 10:52it is a rhythm that we learn by repetition.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: We practice releasing our fear of not having enough.
- 11:03We practice releasing our guilt when we've made mistakes with
- 11:08money or in our relationships.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: We practice relief of our need to control how God will use what we have
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: and what we give.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: Now, release doesn't mean carelessness.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: It means trust.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: Many of us have played this game before.
- 11:34It means loosening our grip so that God's spirit can move
- 11:39through our lives like
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: breath moves through our lungs.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: Both Deuteronomy and Matthew confront the same lie,
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: that security and salvation come from control.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: God's economy says otherwise.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: Freedom comes from trust and from release.
- 12:07imagine what would happen if our congregation practiced relief
- 12:12together and i
- 12:13believe frankly we do a lot of these things if we release shame
- 12:18about our finances
- 12:19and started honest conversations that's what we're doing with
- 12:23these study journals
- 12:25and the conversations that we are having here in worship if we
- 12:29released fear
- 12:31about the church's future that's a big fear right now and
- 12:35instead embraced faith in
- 12:38god's provision what if we released the myth that generosity is
- 12:45only for those who
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: have extra the truth is everyone has something to release some of us
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: have possessions to release.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: But some of us need to release resentment.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: Some of us need to release the belief that our worth depends on our work.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: When we release, we make room for grace.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: And when grace moves in, we find peace.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: Remember the man who walked away sad?
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: I like to think that was not the end of his story.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: I like to think that maybe grief became the doorway to change,
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: that maybe later he found the courage to let go and to come home.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: We know he left thinking, and sometimes that's all one can hope for.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: Our stories can change too.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: When we practice relief.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: When we move from control to trust.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: When we begin to live in tune with God's melody in the world.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: Rosa goes on to write this.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: Resonance cannot be produced at will.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: It can only be received.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: And the same is true for grace.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: We can't force it.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: We can only make space for it in our lives by releasing things.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: God invites us to breathe easier,
- 14:36to be relieved from what burdens us and to join in releasing
- 14:44others from what
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: burdens them.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: Release is that space, the unclenching where grace can breathe.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: This is not just a financial sermon.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: It's a freedom sermon.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: Because when we release, we are released.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: When we forgive, we are forgiven.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: And when we give, we discover abundance.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: So let's just return one more time to that image of breath.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: I invite you, inhale deeply.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: Feel your lungs expand with God's goodness.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: And now exhale.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: Let go of fear, guilt, and the need to prove yourselves.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: This is holy work.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: Breathing in God's love and breathing out release.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: Jesus said, where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
- 15:53So today,
- 15:54may our hearts be found not in clenched fists,
- 15:59but in open hands.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: May we practice release until generosity becomes our second nature.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: And may our lives tell the story God is writing.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: A story of liberation, joy, and peace.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: Amen.
