Transcript
- 0:25Right, good afternoon. Welcome to Miller and Condon on
- 0:29a Friday. The Iowa Sports Radio Network
- 0:31Trent Condon and Kendaller for the next couple of hours to talk
- 0:34sports with you. Thanks for starting your
- 0:36afternoon with us. Whether you're on the Iowa
- 0:39Sports Radio Network, one of the affiliates throughout the state
- 0:42of Iowa on the iheart app or listening on the flagship Des
- 0:45Moines sports station One O 6.3 KX, and we're glad that you are
- 0:49here. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:50program. At the bottom of the hour, Tom
- 0:53Keikert will join U.S. Open football practice.
- 0:55The media saw about 30 minutes of it yesterday, so we'll talk
- 0:58about that with Tom. Fulgaris has decided to enter
- 1:02the transfer portal. We'll talk that with Tom and
- 1:05some women's hoops as well. Tom Keikert at the bottom of our
- 1:09number one, our number 2. We'll start with Eugene Repay,
- 1:12who writes for the Des Moines Register, where he covers Iowa
- 1:15State, some Iowa State news, some Big 12 news as the football
- 1:18program has been assigned 2 Friday night games coming up
- 1:22this year. Both of those games taking place
- 1:25on the road, which should at least make it a little bit
- 1:28easier to swallow. You got to play on Friday night,
- 1:31but you don't have to lose one of your Saturday home games.
- 1:34BYU on the 9th of October and then way into October or way
- 1:38into November rather. The Friday before Thanksgiving,
- 1:42Iowa State will travel to Orlando to play Central Florida
- 1:45and Texas Tech. They've got a night game against
- 1:50Houston on September the 18th. Well done.
- 1:53Absolutely. Shut up, Cody Campbell.
- 1:55Well done, your mark, hold your ground.
- 1:57And he did screw. You're part of the Big 12.
- 2:00You took the money, you signed the contract.
- 2:02Live up to it. Would you please?
- 2:04Is that too much to ask? Masters is underway.
- 2:07We'll get into those topics. Really good hockey game last
- 2:09night with the Wild and the Stars.
- 2:11It goes to Dallas. So Minnesota likely has to begin
- 2:14the playoff round against that outfit and begin in Dallas for
- 2:18game one. And it is going to be nasty.
- 2:21Yeah. And I'm all for that.
- 2:22So how are you? I'm doing well.
- 2:24How are your Masters play plays doing?
- 2:26All right. Yeah.
- 2:27We're in good shape. Well, the good news for me and I
- 2:29think for both of us is, is apparently the Masters has a
- 2:33change to the Stableford scoring system.
- 2:36So when it comes to the case of Bobby McIntyre.
- 2:38Robert McIntyre. Actually a a high score is
- 2:41better for us. He's he blew a gasket yesterday.
- 2:45He did. Yeah, it wasn't good.
- 2:47Cussing and swearing and throwing the bird around.
- 2:51Just a complete meltdown by like not only us thought he had a
- 2:54chance. A of course very beneficial to
- 2:58lefties, except for that one. But anyways, I don't have one
- 3:02guy under par. Oh really?
- 3:04Not one played four guys. I've been I've been better shape
- 3:06than you. Yeah, apparently so.
- 3:08Got Justin Rose, got Shafley, they're up at the top 10, so.
- 3:10The the Rose thing, I hope he, I hope he hangs around, hope he
- 3:13improves on it. Zach doesn't look as though he's
- 3:15going to make the cut, although the cut continues to change.
- 3:18It does. It's now 4 over the projected
- 3:20cut. Line, but he's at six and looks.
- 3:23Like no shot, I'm with you. So what about your better?
- 3:25Are there any 50 pluses that are going to make the cut?
- 3:29Nothing that's defending at this point would be the guy.
- 3:34I have not seen what he's done today.
- 3:35OK, he's not Freddie Couples. No, no, no, no.
- 3:38After you were singing his praises yesterday and.
- 3:40Down the stretch he came and it was awful.
- 3:42He had a quad, Yeah. So that one's still with a shot
- 3:47as Zach Johnson's in the clubhouse at six over.
- 3:49Oh, his round's over. I didn't realize that.
- 3:51Yes, I'm OK. So, all right.
- 3:53And he's tied for 65th. Yeah, he's finished up for the
- 3:55day. Three over today, six over for
- 3:57the. Tournament a pair of 70 fives.
- 3:59So the Iowan looks like he is not going to make the weekend.
- 4:04Olathava right now is five over, so well, maybe he's coming back
- 4:08to the pack. Three over today, so maybe
- 4:10coming back and we could still catch that bet which.
- 4:12Fingers crossed. Biggest disappointment so far
- 4:15after 18 holes or whatever they're at in their second.
- 4:17Round Well, definitely Robert McIntyre has to be part of that
- 4:20conversation. John ROM maybe as well.
- 4:22Ohh, yes, Rob was the second betting choice.
- 4:25Yeah. And I told you I did not get
- 4:26involved in that market at all with him.
- 4:27Wish I was with you. A couple of young guys that
- 4:32people maybe were poking around at JJ spawn coming off the win a
- 4:35week ago and that's not going to happen.
- 4:38He's not going to make the. Cut No, he is 6 over for the
- 4:40tournament. Nikolai Hogard, another young
- 4:43guy that potentially was being talked about, but probably ROM.
- 4:47I mean, when you're the second betting choice and you are not
- 4:50going to make the cut or it looks like currently not going
- 4:52to make the cut, that has to be definitely up there at this
- 4:55point. And does it go back to that
- 4:56conversation again about Liv? Yes, I think it does.
- 4:58And the preparation for it. Look at Bill, look at the de
- 5:01Shambo same way. Yes, Liv has not done well.
- 5:06Rory McIlroy has and, and the, you know, the back-to-back
- 5:10winners and the fact that it's been so long since it's
- 5:12happened, you know, I bought into that theory.
- 5:14I bought into that. He's got his Masters, you know
- 5:17that Maybe he's playing Footloose and fancy free.
- 5:20It kind of feels that way. Been watching him yesterday he
- 5:22was not good off the tee. He was.
- 5:24He did say that he didn't. Have the he was glad he had some
- 5:27nerves, he, you know, but that he just wasn't, you know, going
- 5:31to show up and put a tee in the ground.
- 5:32He's still at at some point realized, boy, this is the
- 5:35Masters, you know, 16 of the most is he, what do you call it?
- 5:38Sixteen of the most important or the 16 most important rounds of
- 5:42the season for, you know, for the four majors, right?
- 5:46Anyway, so we'll keep you updated on that.
- 5:48The leaders, McElroy and Burns, have yet to tee off Wyndham
- 5:52Clark's the guy that's having the round today.
- 5:54He's 4 under. Tyra Hat and another guy 5
- 5:57under. He's having perhaps the best go
- 5:59of it so far. Speaking of guys that seem to
- 6:01lose their cool from time to. Time.
- 6:02He's a cycle back. He is, but you know, there's
- 6:04been time. Both of us have been him over
- 6:06the past. Oh yeah, not this time anyways.
- 6:09But well, other than your bets, do you have a now rooting
- 6:13interest if your bets aren't going to get there?
- 6:15Is there somebody on the? Is it rose because by default?
- 6:18Rose is definitely up there. So close.
- 6:21Sam Burns, I've just always liked him.
- 6:23You like him? Yeah.
- 6:24Like the personality, like the guy, kind of like the story.
- 6:27He's, you know, somebody that feels like everybody likes and
- 6:30came onto the scene. This is going to be one of these
- 6:32next great stars. It certainly is not turned into
- 6:35that, but now and getting into his 30s and re evaluating life,
- 6:39I think he's married now. You know, those kind of things
- 6:41that suddenly change his perspective and just an easy guy
- 6:44to root for. He'd be one guy towards the top
- 6:46that I'd certainly be rooting for.
- 6:48Boy, but by the way, just a beautiful day at a.
- 6:50Cost, yes, the whole week just set up that way, Jason Day, I
- 6:54mean, speak another. I like Jason Day.
- 6:55Yes. What did he have in one in one
- 6:57of the majors? A British.
- 6:58Was it Vertigo that struck him? Yeah.
- 7:01Was it the? PGA or the British.
- 7:04But it was it was a major. It was, and I think it was
- 7:09Vertigo and it's probably, God, 10 years plus by now.
- 7:12Yeah, I, I anyways, but yeah, he's having a good tournament.
- 7:16He's one of those guys that's somewhat easy to root for.
- 7:19He's 300. He just began his round I
- 7:21believe. It was at the US Open in 2015.
- 7:23So we knew it wasn't the Masters.
- 7:25We guess two out of the other 3 and swung and missed.
- 7:28So what kind of day we're off? To second round at Chambers Bay.
- 7:31Is that where it was? Where do they go next?
- 7:33Shinnecock for the US Open. Is that where it is this year?
- 7:36I can't even remember offhand. I think so.
- 7:39I've seen some of the spots that have popped up for the golf's
- 7:42now third major, as the PGA is rightly been.
- 7:46Shinnecock. And taken its place in May.
- 7:50Entries are open if you want to get out the sticks and see how
- 7:53you can do. Really.
- 7:54Yeah, I don't think. You're going to be where, where,
- 7:57where's the, where's the PGA at this year?
- 7:59Good question. PGA 2026 is PGA Tour.
- 8:07No, we're looking for PGA Championship.
- 8:13PGA Championship. You don't even look at your
- 8:14keyboard when you type. It's incredible, isn't it?
- 8:19Scheduled for 2026? PGA scheduled May 14th through
- 8:25the 17th in Philadelphia at Aronomic.
- 8:28Never heard of it. Me neither.
- 8:29Adirondack. No ARONIMINK.
- 8:34Never heard of it. Aronimink, I'll take your word.
- 8:37So do one for me. Yeah, do.
- 8:39You recall it an event being held there.
- 8:41I do not. I do, but it'd be, it would kind
- 8:43of be surprised if all of a sudden they just showed up
- 8:46there. I mean they they believe in
- 8:47rotations, don't. They they played a PGA
- 8:49Championship there in 1960. 2 That's why I don't recall.
- 8:52Yes, don't remember that. One.
- 8:54No, I was three at the time, so yeah, I'm going to cut myself
- 8:57some. Slack absolutely on that one.
- 8:59A new one as Philly will get a major.
- 9:01I'm sure most fans will just be calm, cool, collected, Yeah.
- 9:05Let's let's go to Fulgaris. Certainly not a surprise that
- 9:09he's entered the portal, made it official.
- 9:12I saw the news today. I'm not sure if it happened last
- 9:14night or today that today is when I saw it.
- 9:16What what does this mean? Does and, and whose idea was
- 9:20this or was it a mutual parting, do you think?
- 9:23If you heard anything, we'll get more on Cakered in 20 minutes.
- 9:25Yeah, what? Connecting dots here.
- 9:29I think everything we've heard there was going to be a pay cut.
- 9:32He was not going to get the same amount that he got this season.
- 9:34And that was rumored to be won 1.5.
- 9:36Did you say yesterday? Something like that, yeah.
- 9:39He was not going to get that amount.
- 9:41They need to spend. They need a center, they need a
- 9:43rim protector. That's the most expensive
- 9:44position in the portal. And certainly for the high end
- 9:47guys, they need a point guard, which is the second most
- 9:49important and expensive position there.
- 9:51So when you're talking about funds, I would anticipate took a
- 9:55whole lot more money for Tate Sage this year.
- 9:57Sure. Certainly you look kind of
- 9:59around that roster, Cooper Koch, what he could have got after his
- 10:02performance over the final month of the season.
- 10:05So those guys become more expensive.
- 10:06And when you're building the roster, does it make sense to
- 10:09bring back Alville Frugaris at a price that's a premium price?
- 10:15When you have Cooper, Koch is a power forward.
- 10:18When you have Trey Thompson, who we've heard nothing but great
- 10:21things as he registered this year coming off the illness, you
- 10:24have Ethan Harris coming in the top 100 kid from Washington that
- 10:27you beat Gonzaga for. Well, all power from Washington
- 10:31to beat Gonzaga. If you do get that rim
- 10:33protecting center, that means potentially Cam Maniao is
- 10:37playing more minutes at the four.
- 10:38Which is where he belongs in my opinion.
- 10:39Absolutely, yes. He's probably the backup center,
- 10:41but all sure there's going to be times he go big and you can play
- 10:44him. There's a crunch because
- 10:46Alvaro's best position is power forward.
- 10:48And when you're building a roster, these are the things
- 10:50that you have to look at. It's like free agency.
- 10:52It's like everything else is you have to look at what you have.
- 10:54And Iowa has a plethora of power forwards coupled with the price
- 10:59and on his perspective now, one thing that I think it was Sean
- 11:02Bach that put it, you know, if all things were equal, the money
- 11:04was equal, Alvaro and Iowa would have preferred him to stay
- 11:08there. But that's not the case.
- 11:10This is business. And that's the different part
- 11:12about this than what we were dealing with even a couple of
- 11:14years ago, how different this is.
- 11:17I think it's going to be good for Alvaro, for his family.
- 11:20We heard the story of his dad passing away when he's 9, his
- 11:23mom having to work to make ends meet.
- 11:25He's going to get paid. Somebody's going to pay a
- 11:28premium for Alvaro, a guy that's going to get big time money,
- 11:32which is great for him. Hawkeye notoriety, obviously.
- 11:35Yes. And what this program now is and
- 11:37where the living rooms that Ben Mccullum's going to be able to
- 11:40get in because of elder of Fool Garrison goes hand in.
- 11:42Hand, Yeah, yeah. Mutual party.
- 11:45I think that's a fairway to phrase it and I think it's going
- 11:48to be a good thing for both both parties going forward.
- 11:50Could they have signed him at the time to a two year deal?
- 11:53Was that something? Because I think that's where
- 11:55we're heading, by the way. But especially then they just
- 11:58get bought out. I mean, we've already seen.
- 11:59That, but can you do that? Yeah, if you sign.
- 12:01The the Mensa situation, right? Oh yeah, that was a two year
- 12:06deal. They just bought out of it,
- 12:08right? So I mean, you could get out of
- 12:11it, right? Yeah.
- 12:13But if Iowa would have decided to wanted to want to
- 12:15renegotiate, there was nothing that had that.
- 12:18And this is all hypothetical obviously, because if they're
- 12:21all if, if, if they do get a law passed or changed or it's put in
- 12:25place that you get 1 transfer, you get 5 years, one transfer
- 12:28and that's it. Does that lead to multi year
- 12:32contracts? Probably.
- 12:34But you also said contracts and until these guys are employees,
- 12:38that's not going to change and we're going to get into this
- 12:40wishy washy kind of situation that we're in and nobody knows
- 12:43anything when we get. To that point, you think, well,
- 12:45you'll get to five years, one transfer or do you think that
- 12:49there's going to be too many court challenges, it'll never
- 12:51fly? Yes, if they become employees
- 12:54and they have an opportunity to collectively bargain, that's the
- 12:57way that'll happen. That's what will end.
- 12:59All this charade, all this lying, all this garbage that is
- 13:02out there. How long?
- 13:03How far down the road does it ever happen in your mind?
- 13:07Ever's a long time. In your career?
- 13:10Yeah, 10 years. Five years. 10 years I think
- 13:13maybe is a more realistic one, I mean.
- 13:15What's it going to be like in 10 years?
- 13:17When was? I'm trying to think back of the
- 13:19O'bannon case when that first came to fruition.
- 13:21He was long past playing for. Useful.
- 13:23Oh God. Long gone, Yeah. 10 years
- 13:24probably after probably, but that was 20 years ago when this
- 13:27came up. 2005 six. He's like, hey, that's, that's.
- 13:29Me. That's me in this video game,
- 13:31right? That is, yeah.
- 13:33And I don't get a dime out of that, right?
- 13:35That left-handed quarterback from Boise?
- 13:37That's not Kellen Moore, no. No, no.
- 13:38No, no, don't be thinking that. And that's how the wheels this
- 13:42that was 20 years ago. It was a long time ago.
- 13:44Now here we are today in this. So yeah, certainly not five
- 13:48years, 10 years. You know, potentially they
- 13:50wanted to say it happened pretty fast.
- 13:51I mean, it wasn't too long ago they were finally able to go
- 13:53back for seconds. Absolutely get cream cheese on
- 13:56that bagel. It's asking a lot.
- 13:59It's a meal then. My God.
- 14:01So Tom Caker, we'll get to that. Eugene Repay kicks off our
- 14:04number two, then we'll head to Vegas.
- 14:06Mike Pom, VP of operations at Circa sports, find out where
- 14:10Circa is as far as what kind of liability they have seen.
- 14:13I know that they were pretty pumped about this event because
- 14:16this is the this is the major that by far because the the
- 14:19boards, the the betting's been open for what 10 months, maybe
- 14:24longer, maybe maybe 12, maybe 12.
- 14:27They they put the green jacket on the dude.
- 14:29Somebody's posted numbers for next year's right off the bat,
- 14:32I'm guessing. So there's this is by far the
- 14:35the highest handled major of the four.
- 14:38So we'll talk to Mike Palm about that at some point.
- 14:41We'll do chicken coop probably at about two, I don't know, 1250
- 14:46in that area sometime this hour. We'll give you a opportunity to
- 14:50call in. If you I haven't played in the
- 14:52last 30 days, you are eligible to do so.
- 14:55Got a couple of college football things.
- 14:57First, you mentioned the five for 5 college football, and this
- 15:00will go across the board. Five years to play, five years
- 15:05and that's it. No red shirt years, no medical
- 15:09red shirts, no waivers, none of that.
- 15:13I love it. It's something that I've been
- 15:15yelling about for 20 years, but I think it just to simplify the
- 15:19process and I've heard some pushback.
- 15:22Well, what if a guy's hurt a couple years, OK, they're hurt a
- 15:25couple years. It happens.
- 15:27Yes, we had Jeff Settles play for a six year.
- 15:29Evan Eshmeyer back in the day played seven years because of
- 15:32injuries. But just to simplify this in
- 15:35this wild, crazy sport to make it as we have, Speaking of
- 15:38charades, this four-game rule in college football, it's asinine.
- 15:43Just get rid of it. You know, one of the underlying
- 15:45factors, that is also why some of the coaches are pushing for
- 15:49that. Some of the same coaches that
- 15:50were against it for years and years and years.
- 15:52It's because of that four-game rule, because now you have guys
- 15:55shutting it down. Now you have guys that you're.
- 15:57Shutting down. Absolutely.
- 15:59Or they're shutting down on their own because they want to
- 16:01keep that eligibility. Deserve that red shirt You know
- 16:04what it's it's the fifth game of the year and I got.
- 16:07Four games on tape that I can show these prospective schools
- 16:10where I might end up. Or one in three.
- 16:12We're not going anywhere. I'm maybe not going to be an NFL
- 16:15player, but I can get another. Payday.
- 16:17Oh yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:18Let's get away from that. It's not about really the young
- 16:21guys, it's more even about the old guys and staying away from
- 16:23that part of it too. So there's so many things that
- 16:25just make it so easy, so simple, and I'm fine with it.
- 16:28And yes, it would suck for that individual if you're injured 2-3
- 16:32different years, but in today's environment too, that happens so
- 16:35rarely that it's going to be something that is that
- 16:38debilitating and you're still kind of an opportunity.
- 16:40You get hurt, you get hurt a couple years, you still got
- 16:42three years to play. You still have three years to
- 16:44get tape down. So I I just can't go down that
- 16:47avenue. I absolutely love that idea of
- 16:50what they're having set up and the potential, again, to
- 16:52simplify college athletics when we need it most.
- 16:55Well, we've needed it for a while, but we're certainly still
- 16:57at that point. I I do want to mention this
- 16:59because we wondered how Bill Fennelly was going to get
- 17:01players and players that he got a pretty good one by all the
- 17:04cows. Maya Babbitt.
- 17:06I don't didn't, I'm not saying I've seen her play.
- 17:08I haven't, but she's from Kent State, sophomore and she was
- 17:11leading scorer on the team or freshman.
- 17:13I think she might have three years left.
- 17:15But regardless, or you know what, I could be dead wrong.
- 17:18She might have one year left, OK, but regardless, she's the
- 17:22leading scorer and she's a cyclone.
- 17:24Maya Babbitt is her name. Kent State transfer, so good for
- 17:28you. That's one as they tried to
- 17:30rebuild that roster there but did so pretty early in the
- 17:35transfer portal window that is open now.
- 17:37But Maya Babbitt leaves Kent State leading scorer on last
- 17:40year's squad to come and play for Bill Fenley.
- 17:43And she will be a seeker. That's what I thought one year.
- 17:45Left, Yep, three years with with Kent State.
- 17:47She's from Nebraska, so you got the local.
- 17:49Connection there, yeah, yeah. So she'll be coming back there a
- 17:52lot of spots to fill, a lot of roster spots.
- 17:54Obviously for coach Fenley, Same thing we kind of pondered
- 17:57yesterday. Anything more on Audie Crooks?
- 17:59Nothing. Nothing weird as far as visits.
- 18:02Yeah, nothing. Is it a lack of interest from
- 18:05the top end people you know, I don't know or expectations and
- 18:09IL wise out of whack. I because she's all over the
- 18:12place here in the state of Iowa. I mean, she's fairway
- 18:15commercials, you know, and that's not all I mean have.
- 18:17You seen her do a fairway commercial since the
- 18:19announcement? I have not.
- 18:20I have not. Well, I no wonder if that
- 18:22campaign also ended. Maybe, perhaps that could have
- 18:25been. Yeah, just just timing.
- 18:26Just a coincidence. Yep.
- 18:27But when do you go to a Texas? Well, she's not a Texan.
- 18:33You go to Oklahoma, you're not in Oklahoma.
- 18:36You are a national face. People know you, but then you
- 18:39couple it with the basketball side and we know it's an
- 18:41incredible offensive. Threat.
- 18:43Yeah. Scoring machine.
- 18:44Inside, yes, obviously, but the soft touch and the ability to
- 18:48step out and and extend the range out all the way to the
- 18:50three-point line. We have to go through her.
- 18:52Absolutely how skilled she is offensively, but the defensive
- 18:56end is not good. And with that our programs
- 18:59looking at it with the price tag that goes along with it and
- 19:02maybe people are pulling back. So I don't know it's again
- 19:04speculation is just kind of interesting that I figured at
- 19:07this point somebody as we're seeing.
- 19:09We would know where she's going at, at the very least, visiting,
- 19:12I mean. Yes, visit, set up, that kind of
- 19:14thing and it's been pretty quiet.
- 19:16Maybe that's the way she wants it to.
- 19:17That's another part that we just don't know.
- 19:19Did she enter with the do not contact?
- 19:21I don't think she did. No, I didn't think so.
- 19:26Did Addie Brown. She did, yes.
- 19:29And she's got Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, and I want to say Oklahoma
- 19:32is her third visit. I'm positive Vandy in Notre Dame
- 19:35are 203. We speculated yesterday when Sia
- 19:38Suzuki comes back into the Cubs lineup, which sounds like it's
- 19:41going to be today, that Dylan Carlson might be the odd man
- 19:44out. And he is.
- 19:45He is in the lineup today, is he?
- 19:485th playing right field or DH ING.
- 19:50Don't know, just know that he's batting 5th because he's on a
- 19:53fantasy team and I see a pop up here with #5 next to his name.
- 19:56So I do know that he is in the lineup and he will be in the
- 19:59middle of the order. They can use that pop.
- 20:01Yeah, they absolutely could. No doubt about.
- 20:04By the way, Speaking of the Cubs, have you seen, and I
- 20:07haven't listened to the podcast? This might be one of the maybe
- 20:09the first podcast I actually seek out.
- 20:12Have you seen any of the clips on X about the Cubs 2016 World
- 20:16Series with Rizzo and Jon Lester?
- 20:19They're and David Ross and some of the stories that they're now
- 20:23telling. I did, but I have not watched.
- 20:26Any it's really good. It's really good.
- 20:28I mean some of the it's, it kind of takes you inside that team
- 20:32and some of the goings on and I'm sure most teams are like
- 20:35this, but we don't know. But just the fact that obviously
- 20:38the historic nature of that franchise and never to be
- 20:40forgotten, it looks pretty darn good.
- 20:43I'm I was wondering if any if you'd seen it or heard it or I
- 20:47know a bunch. Of I'm not a Cubs fan, so yeah,
- 20:48probably. Probably Cubs fans have
- 20:51downloaded, but your your squad won again.
- 20:53Though they did four in a row. Now they go to Toronto this
- 20:56week. They do absolutely a big series.
- 20:59For both teams. For both teams.
- 21:01Keep it going for the Twinkies. It's April 10th, it's not that
- 21:04big of a series. Well, it kind of is, because I
- 21:06like the way your team's gone. They still count.
- 21:08They're still 1 of 162. That's true.
- 21:11They are. You can't get them back.
- 21:13You know what's crazy? We talked yesterday about the
- 21:15lack of above 500 teams. Right in the American.
- 21:17League In the American League, there are only 5 teams that have
- 21:20a positive run differential at this point in.
- 21:23Time in the American. League in the all of baseball?
- 21:25No, in the whole American League, which seems
- 21:27mathematically almost impossible, right?
- 21:29You got 15 teams. You figure 7 or 8 of them are
- 21:32above the the plus minus in the run differential.
- 21:35Of course the Yankees leading the way, they're plus 25 and
- 21:38then the other ones are tight. Second on the list, my Minnesota
- 21:41Twins. There you go. +5 Also the
- 21:44Rangers are +5 on the year, +3 for the Guardians and plus one
- 21:48for the Astros. Everybody else.
- 21:50The other ten teams with a negative run differential in the
- 21:53early portions of the season. Good stuff.
- 21:55Tom Kaker coming up. We'll talk to Tom on the other
- 21:58side. Look forward to doing that.
- 22:00Hawkeye related topics on deck chicken coop still to come
- 22:03Eugene repay on Iowa State. Mike Palm from Vegas circus
- 22:07sports. Miller and Condon underway on
- 22:10our Friday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 22:11Network. Hi Miller Condon, welcome back.
- 22:29Approaching 12/30 as we take you until 2O clock.
- 22:33Saya Suzuki is indeed batting 5th, Trent Condon and he will
- 22:37start in right field, so no DH as he comes back from the
- 22:42injured list right into right field.
- 22:44Matt Shaw goes to the bench. The DH today will be Moises by
- 22:48Esteros as they get set to take on the Pirates 121st pitch.
- 22:52Let's talk to Tom Keikart hawkeyereport.com part of the on
- 22:56three media enterprise. Hello, Tom Trenton, Ken, how are
- 22:59you? Doing well guys, the portal is
- 23:02active. Indeed.
- 23:04Let's start. Do you want to save some time
- 23:06for football as the meeting was allowed, what, 30 minutes
- 23:09yesterday? I think, Tom, you guys were.
- 23:11Yeah, that was great. Good for them.
- 23:12They should do that periodically.
- 23:15Let's get to the portal. Let's get to Fulgaris.
- 23:18By all accounts, mutual decision based off from both Iowa and
- 23:23Fulgaris. Do you see it that way, Tom?
- 23:27Yeah, I do. I think it was, I know people
- 23:30are surprised maybe today to see it, but I mean, this thing's
- 23:34been rumoured for a week. He was going to head for greener
- 23:40pastures. A green maybe being the
- 23:43operative word. But, you know, I if you were
- 23:50reading some of the stuff that a lot of us were producing on the
- 23:54on the the NCAA path, it was pretty apparent that that Ben
- 24:02McCollum and Alvaro Foggers did not really see the world the
- 24:05same way when it comes to basketball sometimes.
- 24:08And and it was probably not a great situation for them.
- 24:14So I asked Alvaro one day, said I said, how would you term your
- 24:19relationship with Ben McCollum? And would you call it
- 24:23interesting? He goes, that's a good word,
- 24:24interesting. Like.
- 24:26OK, yeah. So anyway, he's he's moving on,
- 24:31I'm sure he'll get a nice payday.
- 24:33I don't know that it will equal up with what he had rumored to
- 24:36got from Iowa, but I'm sure he's going to get something very nice
- 24:40and hope he does well. He's an enjoyable guy to cover.
- 24:43And made a huge. Shot yes he did, and played
- 24:45really well in three games yeah, with.
- 24:47The exception. Not so much.
- 24:48He'll play turn. Yeah, he's he.
- 24:51He was worth every penny. Thanks.
- 24:53Thanks to that shot. Without a doubt.
- 24:55Yeah, totally agree. Getting them to the Sweet 16,
- 24:58getting them to an Elite 8. He was, we do good Al.
- 25:01We also knew bad Al. And I think that's maybe the
- 25:03sticking point here. You know that inconsistency,
- 25:06but. By the way, do you coined that?
- 25:07Because that was really good throughout the year.
- 25:08Good Al and bad Al, I know, remember.
- 25:10We had Bobby Hanson on. He left when you.
- 25:12Asked yes, we definitely saw both angles of that one.
- 25:16But that now means that Iowa has more muddy freed up to go out
- 25:20there and do some work in the transfer portal.
- 25:21So let's go that direction. A lot of names that are out
- 25:24there looking for a center, looking for a lead guard.
- 25:27Those are the two positions. What is the latest on that
- 25:29front? Any visit set up, any
- 25:31interviews, anything like that? What's happening for Iowa
- 25:34getting players now in from the portal?
- 25:36Well, like every school right now, they're doing a lot of
- 25:39Zooms is what they're just like touching base with people.
- 25:44And I've heard this from various different people that like
- 25:49trying to nail down some of these visits is like trying to
- 25:52nail jello to a wall. That was just like, it's
- 25:56impossible to kind of get kids to, you know, commit to coming
- 26:01on visits. And it's just, it's, it's a
- 26:05really weird situation that they have because it's just like,
- 26:09it's not like you're going to visit with them in their homes.
- 26:11You're doing these Zooms and it's, and then you're trying to
- 26:14get them on campus and trying to get them to commit.
- 26:16And it's, it's. And meanwhile, the agent is
- 26:20probably talking to the coach about how much money they can
- 26:22get, and that's determining whether they're going to visit.
- 26:28And then you've got people complaining about, well, they're
- 26:30not getting enough. You know, money is getting lied
- 26:34to about how much money these kids are really worth.
- 26:36And it is, it's not great, but yeah, they're looking for a
- 26:40centre and a point guard. Andrew McKeever is one of the
- 26:42guys. I know they've been after guy
- 26:45from Saint Mary's Big 73 kid. They they want to get A7 footer
- 26:49who can who can kind of rebound and.
- 26:52He's got three years of eligibility, Tom.
- 26:55I think he's got 2. Two OK I.
- 26:58Think it's two OK the the fruit kid from Louisville.
- 27:02I know they've been in touch with him and he's a good block
- 27:05shot guy. He's 23.
- 27:07He's from Germany. Yeah, they've, I think the guard
- 27:12thing's really kind of interesting because there's a
- 27:14lot of names that get her getting floated around out
- 27:17there. And, you know, one of them is
- 27:21Cayenne Evans, the kid from North Carolina who's at Colorado
- 27:24State. And I know the Minnesota people
- 27:28feel like he's going there. And I know that about a week
- 27:32ago, Iowa felt really good about potentially getting him if and
- 27:36when he went in the Portland. He eventually did, so we'll see
- 27:40what happens with him. I, I don't know, they're,
- 27:44they're picking phone calls with, with one of my favorite
- 27:48names that I didn't know until last night.
- 27:50Ace Glass? Yeah, that's a point guard,
- 27:52right? That's the That's Nil screaming
- 27:55at you. Any glass companies in the
- 27:57greater Cedar Rapids, IA city area?
- 27:59There's your guy, right? There.
- 28:01What's his story, Tom? He's a, he's a younger guy.
- 28:05So he's I think first year at Washington State and really
- 28:09good, good season. They were playing in the WCC.
- 28:12So it's not PAC 12, Washington State, but the BCC.
- 28:16And he had a really nice year, entered the portal and you know,
- 28:21he's garnered some interest. Iowa's been in touch.
- 28:24So we'll see if anything comes to that.
- 28:28Brett Decker, kid from Liberty, they've been in in touch with.
- 28:32So it's, it's all over the place.
- 28:35And I know they're they're hoping to get some things firmed
- 28:40up for guys to come in early next week.
- 28:42That's all I've been able to gather so far.
- 28:45Let's jump over to the women's side of things. 3 visits set up
- 28:48this week, including an absolute monster top ten player in the
- 28:52portal, as they're going to get a visit on that front from the
- 28:55Georgia transfer. Danny Carnegie I, I believe is
- 28:58the name, played with chitchat right at Georgia Tech two years
- 29:01ago, a all SEC first teamer averaged 18 points per game.
- 29:07Somebody that's incredibly good off the bounce.
- 29:09You talk about a great elixir, could shoot a little bit from
- 29:11the outside. They need that against top level
- 29:13talent, somebody that can beat players off the dribble and
- 29:17definitely feels like that's the kind of 1.
- 29:18So we're feeling good about this one and two other visitors this
- 29:21weekend too, right? Well, it's down to 1 now because
- 29:24the girl from Lynnwood, Ellie Bergerman, has cancelled her
- 29:28visit and she is likely headed to Oklahoma State where she is,
- 29:34you know, she's from Oklahoma. So I think that's that would
- 29:38have been a good one though, because she shot 44% from behind
- 29:42the arcs. But Carnegie would be a really
- 29:46good one. Also.
- 29:47One other note for her is that her lead recruiter to Georgia
- 29:51Tech was Lasonda Barrett, who's on the Iowa staff now.
- 29:53So they've got that. They've got the chit chat
- 29:56factor. So I think they feel like
- 29:59they've got a pretty decent chance that getting her to come
- 30:03north. And that would be a big deal
- 30:05because they could plug her in the backcourt with chit chat.
- 30:08And I think that would be a pretty dynamic backcourt to go
- 30:13with what they have up front. And so we'll see.
- 30:16Kenzie hair. Does that make sense for Iowa?
- 30:19It does. It does.
- 30:22Also, there's a Reagan McCown who's from Western Illinois
- 30:25who's going to set up a visit to Iowa.
- 30:29So they've got, they've got some options.
- 30:31They need to get probably 3 guards.
- 30:34Honestly, they probably got to get 3 guards because of just
- 30:37what they lost with, with, you know, Kylie leaving and then and
- 30:41then Kylie, Kelly Levin and and Eddie Deal.
- 30:46So I think they want to try and get 3 guards, maybe get a four
- 30:52if they can, who can, who can kind of maybe split some time
- 30:56with Journey Houston there. So that's that's kind of the
- 31:00latest with Jan. But yeah, they've got a couple
- 31:03coming in here in the next few days.
- 31:05We heard the reports and I believe was it Nikos that had it
- 31:08over at on three. I win that range, about $10
- 31:10million for the men's side. Are there any of those estimates
- 31:13out there for women's basketball because I haven't seen them.
- 31:17I have not seen any and I really couldn't tell you what they have
- 31:21for for a range. I know they're getting some of
- 31:26the house money, but I don't know how much and I know they've
- 31:32got access to some other money from from NIL stuff, the the
- 31:37traditional NIL, but poison, yeah.
- 31:41Just when you think maybe things will calm down a little bit with
- 31:44some of the stuff, especially on the men's side, it's like things
- 31:48have skyrocketed, especially for the higher end guys.
- 31:52You know the Floyd Badunga from Kansas getting 5 million crazy.
- 31:59It's it's not healthy or sustainable for the sport.
- 32:03It's just not. Biggest system is so broken
- 32:05right now. No doubt.
- 32:06Did you see either one of you, that Wisconsin, apparently the
- 32:10the state of Wisconsin is going to kick in north of 14,000,000 a
- 32:14year towards nil. Did I read that right, Tom?
- 32:18I saw something about that, but I didn't dive into it yet to see
- 32:21what the whole story was or if it was to kind of maybe it's
- 32:25kind of to offset that the 20.5 or 21 point that they're that
- 32:31they keep having to spend every year.
- 32:33I think maybe that's where they're doing stuff right now.
- 32:36Yeah, kind of the thought process behind it is how much
- 32:39money is brought into the state because of that and what's
- 32:42brought in for football games and basketball games and and the
- 32:45economic impact that specifically Badger Sports
- 32:48brings. Well, all right, we're going to
- 32:49give a kick back there. Don't think that's going to be
- 32:52happening at our state anytime soon.
- 32:54Top football. You were there at practice
- 32:57bright and early in the morning. Dennis was taking pictures for
- 32:59you as well. Really enjoyed that also and
- 33:01getting a look at some of the guys and, you know, top of the
- 33:04fold, it's quarterback and Hank Brown was the first one taking
- 33:08snap. So that leads to free take out
- 33:09factors on message boards at Hawkeye Report.
- 33:12No, you would think, huh, it does.
- 33:15And it was just and it's because they're they are literally
- 33:18flipping this every day from what I've been told.
- 33:21Like one day it's it's Ekolinski, the next day it's
- 33:23Hank Brown. They just, they're trying to be
- 33:25fair and equal and giving them both the same amount of time.
- 33:28Like when they went to another drill, Ekolinski was the first
- 33:31one out there. So it's just, you know, but it
- 33:33was wow, they're doing a walkthrough and Hank was the
- 33:36first one out there. So let's make a big deal about
- 33:39it because I, I think the fans have made-up their mind who they
- 33:42want to quarterback. I think they've without without
- 33:46much evidence or without seeing a whole lot, just decided and I
- 33:51think that that that third down pass is going to live without.
- 33:55A doubt? Yep, without a doubt.
- 33:56What could he complete? That pass and they score a
- 33:58touchdown. Yep, Brown is probably the the
- 34:00bell of the ball. Right.
- 34:01The anointed one, no question. Yeah, it's just, it's just how
- 34:05quickly we can judge on on things.
- 34:08But it's, you know, somebody suggested to me this and and I
- 34:12think you guys will get a kick out of this, that that Hank
- 34:16Brown is probably the guy that Kirk's parents would prefer and
- 34:19Tim Lunster would prefer Peklinski.
- 34:24And we know exactly why. You know, Hank is probably the
- 34:28the less risky when you're talking about the other guy
- 34:30who's a gunslinger. He's a gunslinger, by the way,
- 34:34the other guy that gathering a lot of fan praise is the
- 34:40boogeyman, Tony Diaz. So that's.
- 34:43Trent's guy. We're losing you, Tom, You
- 34:49there? I think we just lost Tom Caker.
- 34:52We'll try him back. Yeah, let's try him back.
- 34:54I want to talk to him a little bit more as well.
- 34:56Tom, we're going to drop you and call you right back.
- 34:57We all this for whatever reason lost your signal.
- 35:01So we'll reconnect with Tom Caker.
- 35:03A couple more things on the hot guys, couple more guys on the
- 35:05roster. Want to pick Tom's brain about
- 35:08before we let him go and then give four of you an opportunity
- 35:11to jump aboard here, not now in 5 minutes or so and get in line.
- 35:16If you want to play for the weekly chicken coop giveaway, we
- 35:19do it each and every week. A gift for you, an opportunity
- 35:22to win some grub from the chicken coop.
- 35:24That contest coming up and that queue to call coming up in about
- 35:275 minutes. We will get to that.
- 35:30Let's get Tom Kicker back in here.
- 35:33Tom, you were you were talking about DES first when you're
- 35:36whatever reason your phone cut out.
- 35:40It's weird, could hear you guys couldn't hear me here.
- 35:43Now you're cutting out again, too.
- 35:46Thank goodness. Yeah, let's, let's try.
- 35:51Still choppy. It's really choppy.
- 35:53Tom, take a step to your right. Well, let me.
- 35:56There you go. Yeah.
- 35:58No, it's still bad. Is that better?
- 36:01There it is. That sounds for now.
- 36:02Is that better? Yep.
- 36:03So I'm going to get this in really quick, OK, LJ Phillips,
- 36:07he's the guy that caught my attention of Ference's press
- 36:10conference. We brought him up the running
- 36:11back in a in a position it seems to have some depth there.
- 36:14Sounds like they got a little more depth there with Phillips
- 36:17is that is that might be the case.
- 36:19Hey, we got a Norm Granger comparison at the press
- 36:21conference, which just made me so happy because anytime he can
- 36:25roll 1 back to the 80s and you know, that's, that's Kirk's,
- 36:29Kirk's wheelhouse. So yeah, he's, I, I saw him
- 36:32carry a couple times and, well, he's quick, he's low center
- 36:37gravity guy runs really hard. So I'm interested to see him
- 36:42some more. Yeah, they're, they've got some,
- 36:46some different little weapons and Vanderzee looks great.
- 36:50Diaz looks really good. We saw Jared Bowie I.
- 36:54Forgot he was on the team. Tom.
- 36:56Honest to God I forgot he was on the team.
- 36:59Well, he hadn't played in a year, so it was easy to forget
- 37:02about him and he was out there catching some passes and looking
- 37:06pretty good. So yeah, he's got some some
- 37:10weapons now if they can get the pass game moving, we'll see if
- 37:14they can do that then if we've got an interesting offense this
- 37:18year. That would be fun to see.
- 37:20Now the question, and I think the biggest question is that
- 37:23defensive tackle and when Bryce Hawthorne had what, a a boot on
- 37:29of what, an injury, no. He was a he knee he it was a
- 37:33knee thing. He had a big sleeve on his knee.
- 37:35Big sleeve on the knee. OK, Eddie, more about that.
- 37:38And secondly, it's thin. I mean, you got two walk ONS
- 37:42right now that were out there with the first team reps
- 37:43according to a report yesterday. Tom, that's scary.
- 37:47Yeah, and they had Gaffney and and Hubert were out there and
- 37:53and that was the the starters and the Bryce Stephen kid that
- 37:58they brought in from Holy Cross. Boy, he sought off.
- 38:01He's he's a short guy. He's not very big.
- 38:04He's just not very big. And the kid from North Dakota
- 38:06was in there too, and he's not very big.
- 38:10You know, keep waiting for Devin Kennedy.
- 38:12He looks the part, but he hasn't really emerged.
- 38:15So, yeah, they've got a, they've got to find some answers, that
- 38:21empty tackle because Calvin Bell is going to have his work cut
- 38:24out. I'll let him see if they can
- 38:27develop something there. But boy, that's it.
- 38:30It is a little frightening now. I like the the end position a
- 38:33little bit that, you know, up in FA.
- 38:36He looks like he's ready to go. Kenny Merryweather looks like
- 38:40he's ready to go. Drew Campbell was out there, you
- 38:44know, it's one of the backup ends.
- 38:46So I think they've got enough guys at end, but it's that
- 38:51tackle position is a mega concern right now.
- 38:55Tom, when will you get another opportunity to watch?
- 38:57Is the the last opportunity? Will that come up that open
- 39:01practice? Is there another?
- 39:02One yeah, yeah, 25th this one we'll get we'll get another look
- 39:07at practice. Other than that, we're going to
- 39:09talk to some players again next week and I think the and then
- 39:12the week of the the final spring practice, we'll get the
- 39:15coordinators good, get to talk to Tim Lester and Phil and and
- 39:20Chris Pelisi. Good stuff, Tom Keikart,

- 43:57They're not the favorites. No Denver.
- 43:59I thought they were no denver's -175 on the puck.
- 44:01Line Jesus. Yeah, What about that?
- 44:04Everybody's going with the dog I jumped aboard last night on.
- 44:07I was watching it. You really were, yeah.
- 44:10That trapped a live line of plus 1/15 on on The Pioneers.
- 44:14Was was base, was there a late game in baseball last night or
- 44:17was the Mets the last game in baseball last night?
- 44:19There was something later on, but.

- 44:58nasty rivalry. I am all for it.
- 45:01Two of the best five teams. Yes, maybe Sport I2 of the best
- 45:055. Colorado, Dallas, Minnesota,
- 45:09Tampa Bay from the east and I think Carolina's the other team.
- 45:13To show you my lack of hockey knowledge, I just saw something
- 45:16I saw highlighted on Sports Center last night.
- 45:18Guy for an American, for the Canadians, You know what I'm?
- 45:21Talking about yeah, yeah, Cole Caulfield.
- 45:22Yeah, scored his 50th goal, I'd say.
- 45:24Yeah, I don't know who he is. He didn't make the US Olympic
- 45:27team, which was kind of a a topic back in the day even.
- 45:31If you would have made it, I'd probably still wouldn't know no
- 45:32problem unless he did something important.
- 45:34He did. He scored 50 games.
- 45:36Fifty goals for the Montreal Canadiens.
- 45:38I used to know hockey well. There was a Draper on the ice
- 45:41for Michigan last night. I'm like, oh, this got to be
- 45:42Chris Draper's kid. And everybody's like, I, I don't
- 45:46know if it is, but my baby. Look, you flaunt, to your
- 45:48knowledge, I'm like, my hockey is like 89 to like 94 that
- 45:52that's kind of my range when hockey was a big part of my.
- 45:54There is a Des Moines Buccaneer on the Minnesota Wild, did you
- 45:58know that? I did not.
- 45:59Jeff Petrie, His dad, Dan Petrie, pitched on the 84
