- 2:08Speaker 3: before we do that, folks, some exciting news obviously, Just
- 2:11Speaker 3: first off, had a great weekend at the college football
- 2:14Speaker 3: game last weekend in Dublin, but one of the main
- 2:16Speaker 3: things I was asked was just a lot of frankly
- 2:19Speaker 3: Steelers fans NFL fans just weren't secured yet with a
- 2:23Speaker 3: ticket for the first ever NFL doublin game, and excited
- 2:26Speaker 3: to announce that there is another chance to secure tickets

- 3:23Speaker 3: we'd love to see you there.
- 3:24Speaker 2: This week we have a.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Great guest on the Irish Sais podcast presented by Erling
- 3:28Speaker 3: is one of the most well known Hurland players across Ireland.
- 3:31Speaker 3: If you're a Cork fan or if you live around Cork,
- 3:33Speaker 3: you'll definitely know who this guy is. Patrick Horgan joins
- 3:36Speaker 3: us on Irish Steelers podcast as we get.
- 3:42Speaker 4: Closer to the season.
- 3:43Speaker 2: One week away from.
- 3:44Speaker 3: The NFL season starting now, this podcast is kicking back
- 3:47Speaker 3: into gear. Delighted to walk him in. A very well
- 3:50Speaker 3: known man run Cork. I know a lot of people
- 3:52Speaker 3: will have seen him throughout the last few months and
- 3:54Speaker 3: throughout the last few years. Patrick Horgan on the Irish
- 3:56Speaker 3: Saiers podcast. Hogy as anomber of my Cork made call you, sir?
- 4:00Speaker 3: What's the crack Patrick Fischer coming on?
- 4:03Speaker 5: No? Not bad, No, just tipping away. We're playing the wrong
- 4:06Speaker 5: games now at a minute.
- 4:07Speaker 4: But I just heard you there.
- 4:08Speaker 5: The the NFL season starting is it next week or
- 4:12Speaker 5: the week after? And yeah, every Sunda night from six
- 4:15Speaker 5: to twelve is gonna be taken up anyway?
- 4:17Speaker 3: Do you stay up past twelve or is it very
- 4:19Speaker 3: much like bad time red zone or what? What like?
- 4:22Speaker 2: Would you ever stay up late late?
- 4:23Speaker 5: As the question, I know I truggled past the twelve.
- 4:28Speaker 5: I go six to twelve the two games, like you
- 4:30Speaker 5: get the six o'clock in the nines. But after that
- 4:33Speaker 5: it's I'd like that sometimes because usually they put the
- 4:36Speaker 5: best games on it after that. Again, so they're kind
- 4:40Speaker 5: of enticing into watching it, but not it's it's almost
- 4:43Speaker 5: impossible offering among the morns.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Have you have you many mates that are into it?
- 4:48Speaker 3: So for example, what's like, what's the super Bowl night
- 4:51Speaker 3: like in the Horgan household?
- 4:53Speaker 5: Uh No, I just I sit down about quarter to
- 4:56Speaker 5: six and throwing the red zone and I'm a way
- 4:59Speaker 5: into twelve like but oh my buddies doing the same.
- 5:01Speaker 5: So we're always texting back and forward. One or two
- 5:04Speaker 5: fellers have a docket done, and we're looking at that
- 5:06Speaker 5: and looking at the farm. And it never the fawn
- 5:08Speaker 5: never works out because there's always upsets, and that's good
- 5:11Speaker 5: to follow.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Look, anybody that knows you and knows what you do.
- 5:17Speaker 3: We're not gonna goin to the herland talk here, but
- 5:19Speaker 3: to cut around it, Steelers are playing in Croke Park
- 5:22Speaker 3: four or five weeks time. Historic for any on the
- 5:25Speaker 3: fence NFL fan, For any NFL fan, it's been a
- 5:27Speaker 3: religious fan for years.
- 5:29Speaker 4: Yep.
- 5:30Speaker 3: I think a lot of people know how special Crouk
- 5:32Speaker 3: Park is, and I know we can jump on it.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Patrick can say, like, you know, Parky Quews special as well,
- 5:37Speaker 3: if only we could have a game there. But it'll
- 5:39Speaker 3: be pretty cool to see an NFL team or an
- 5:43Speaker 3: NFL game happened in that stadium in a few weeks time.
- 5:46Speaker 4: Yeah, it's going to be It's going to be crazy.
- 5:49Speaker 4: I suppose.
- 5:51Speaker 5: Like those boys are used to playing in like mega
- 5:53Speaker 5: stadiums and all that. But I'm pretty sure that when
- 5:56Speaker 5: even day walk around to crow Park, they'll definitely have
- 5:59Speaker 5: a look around and be like, do.
- 6:00Speaker 4: You know whoa this is? This is the real leal here.
- 6:04Speaker 5: It's it's that it's that kind of big and that
- 6:06Speaker 5: kind of you just get that feedlom and you walk
- 6:08Speaker 5: in and they'll get out of a no doubt.
- 6:11Speaker 3: I can imagine what they're going to be like, not
- 6:13Speaker 3: just the players, but like even the media, the people
- 6:15Speaker 3: in America around the world watching when they see the
- 6:18Speaker 3: hell hell is going to be seated. Just to remind
- 6:20Speaker 3: people listening right now that there is a ballot going
- 6:23Speaker 3: on at the moment. I mean, the hell is pretty special.
- 6:27Speaker 3: What's it like walking past that before a game when
- 6:29Speaker 3: you see everybody going mad?
- 6:30Speaker 4: Oh savage, Like the whole thing is like.
- 6:32Speaker 5: But just as we're on about, like you know, the
- 6:35Speaker 5: NFL being different than obviously seating everybody in the kind
- 6:39Speaker 5: of atmosphere that their own NFL games, Like, I think
- 6:42Speaker 5: it'll open a lot of people's eyes, like you know
- 6:44Speaker 5: around the GA like that, do you know this kind
- 6:46Speaker 5: of an atmosphere can be brought to GA matches as well, Like,
- 6:50Speaker 5: no matter who's playing, doesn't have to be the biggest
- 6:52Speaker 5: game of the year. It doesn't have to be. But
- 6:54Speaker 5: in general, like it's a it's a sport kind of
- 6:58Speaker 5: made for like fun and people to have fun out in.
- 7:01Speaker 5: Its kind of a part of the atmosphere and everybody's
- 7:03Speaker 5: having a great time. And yeah, something that the GA
- 7:07Speaker 5: probably could learn a bit from.
- 7:09Speaker 3: I think that's definitely a convert it's gonna be. It's
- 7:11Speaker 3: it's genuinely gonna be interesting to see what the NFL
- 7:14Speaker 3: does around the city of the Steers, but that'll be
- 7:16Speaker 3: something we'll see in the next few weeks. And yeah,
- 7:18Speaker 3: imagine a big party they got on all Arn and
- 7:19Speaker 3: final Day. It's one of those things. And we were
- 7:23Speaker 3: talking I guess briefly over the last couple of days,
- 7:26Speaker 3: and one thing I didn't mention, Patrick, but I know
- 7:28Speaker 3: you've probably seen in the news is a lot of
- 7:31Speaker 3: these different Irish athletes are starting to kick in the NFL.
- 7:37Speaker 3: I know it's a bit different to you know, hurling
- 7:40Speaker 3: in the sense of you know, you're not kicking as
- 7:43Speaker 3: a sliver all the time in that sense, but when
- 7:46Speaker 3: you see guys like from different parts of the island,
- 7:49Speaker 3: it's really interesting because we've seen guys go to like
- 7:51Speaker 3: Ousie Whels before, but this is completely different.
- 7:54Speaker 4: Yeah, and.
- 7:56Speaker 5: It's probably the hardest thing to do, Like as you
- 7:59Speaker 5: see probably a lot of the Irish lads as kickers
- 8:03Speaker 5: because it's so specialized. I suppose I've been to I've
- 8:07Speaker 5: been to five or six games in America and I
- 8:10Speaker 5: go like say tours before the match to see like
- 8:13Speaker 5: what they're doing there and the kicker is there for
- 8:15Speaker 5: as long as the field, as I suppose, as long
- 8:17Speaker 5: as they're there, they're on the field. Kicking just never
- 8:19Speaker 5: seems to stop. So it's obviously like a really high
- 8:23Speaker 5: level to get that. And even though the other positions
- 8:26Speaker 5: like the snapper, like, yeah, I watched I watched the
- 8:30Speaker 5: snapper like for an hour and a half doing the
- 8:32Speaker 5: same move one night in a warm up to know
- 8:34Speaker 5: before a game, and I'm being on.
- 8:36Speaker 4: It looks easy, but obviously there's there's levels all that.
- 8:39Speaker 4: So and the kicker is the same.
- 8:40Speaker 5: And we've a load of fellas gone over and chance
- 8:43Speaker 5: and drama and they've been like their boomers and legs like,
- 8:46Speaker 5: but obviously there's fellows over there and they can they
- 8:49Speaker 5: can kick it as well leg So it's it's it's
- 8:52Speaker 5: it's uneasy to see it.
- 8:53Speaker 4: And it's only staffed they know.
- 8:54Speaker 5: So I can imagine in a couple of years that
- 8:56Speaker 5: it'll it'll open up even more.
- 8:59Speaker 3: I don't worry. I'll I'll ask what I asked Dean
- 9:01Speaker 3: Rock about doing it whenever he retires. I'm joking we'll
- 9:04Speaker 3: not even get in that conversation. But yeah, there we go.
- 9:10Speaker 3: In terms of stem. Just on the topic of Ireland,
- 9:13Speaker 3: is to Wee Sack and Patrick. Steelers obviously have a
- 9:15Speaker 3: lot of links to the island. They left newly in
- 9:18Speaker 3: eighteen forty and I'm nearly sure. So when I was
- 9:21Speaker 3: talking to young Dan Rooney he went to the epic
- 9:25Speaker 3: Immigration Museum in Dublin and actually seeing Cork pop up
- 9:28Speaker 3: on the map. I mean, look, that story is massive
- 9:31Speaker 3: in the fact that there's only one team now with
- 9:33Speaker 3: the original ownership, which is the Rooney family, regardless of
- 9:37Speaker 3: who anybody supports fan wise in Ireland. For a lot
- 9:41Speaker 3: of people like there's no relationship that a team has
- 9:45Speaker 3: with another country, then the Steelers have to Ireland. That's
- 9:48Speaker 3: that's pretty cool.
- 9:50Speaker 5: Yeah, that's something I didn't know as of but yeah,
- 9:53Speaker 5: it's it's it's crazy to think that there's do you
- 9:57Speaker 5: know at the NFL is such a big thing in
- 9:58Speaker 5: America that did you sails the it's they've.
- 10:02Speaker 4: Only had one owner. The Steelers only had one owner as.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Ever, consistently being the Rooney family, So they're almost like
- 10:08Speaker 3: they're almost like the original, like the original family in
- 10:12Speaker 3: that sense.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Yeah, that's crazy. I didn't know that.
- 10:14Speaker 5: I definitely thought there'd be not a few that that
- 10:18Speaker 5: we're never sold or whatever like that. But yeah, that's
- 10:20Speaker 5: a bit crazy, and yeah, it's it's like the last
- 10:23Speaker 5: couple of years especially, there's been big ties with the
- 10:27Speaker 5: Steelers in Ireland's every look and social media know, like
- 10:31Speaker 5: they're in Crowth Park for all different things, like they're
- 10:35Speaker 5: lunches or there's dinners up there and all that.
- 10:37Speaker 4: I see them all happening. But yeah, it's it's it's crazy.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Yeah, one thing that has come up to my head
- 10:43Speaker 3: and it will be a real amiss of me not
- 10:45Speaker 3: to mention it. Obviously, get yourself on the podcast. The
- 10:48Speaker 3: man in charge of American Football Ireland is a quirkman
- 10:51Speaker 3: Alan and Maseny and I'm saying that because they have
- 10:54Speaker 3: been down to I think it's MTU. The Steelers have
- 10:57Speaker 3: been down to do a camp down in Cork as well.
- 11:00Speaker 3: The thing I'd say Patrick is for people listening, I'm
- 11:03Speaker 3: yet to me the bad court person. Everyone is just
- 11:05Speaker 3: lovely when he would die and it's good cracks. So
- 11:07Speaker 3: I'll definitely get on bad of trying to get some
- 11:09Speaker 3: of the party quep. At some point we were talking
- 11:11Speaker 3: off camera about Aaron Rodgers and I think sometimes when
- 11:15Speaker 3: people are following the NFL, they come in, they come
- 11:18Speaker 3: out in the off season. The biggest move of the
- 11:20Speaker 3: offseason for the Steelers has been to bring this guy in.
- 11:24Speaker 3: Even though he's entering his forties. I still think he
- 11:26Speaker 3: could do something. It's going to be really exciting. The
- 11:28Speaker 3: same playing in Dublin Man.
- 11:29Speaker 4: Yeah, it's funny. He's like we're talking a go about
- 11:33Speaker 4: like you know what, who's who be?
- 11:35Speaker 5: Mike kind of sided players, but he'd be definitely one
- 11:37Speaker 5: of them.
- 11:39Speaker 4: Like they never seem to get older. Fellas the boys.
- 11:44Speaker 5: Who throw the ball more than more than run, like
- 11:46Speaker 5: you know, there they could stay there forever.
- 11:48Speaker 4: You see Rogers big Ben.
- 11:50Speaker 5: Big Ben couldn't move yard like, but he he lasted
- 11:53Speaker 5: long enough, didn't he. Yeah, yeah, you would breeze doing
- 11:56Speaker 5: the same like they all seem to last. There's a
- 12:02Speaker 5: few running quarterbacks in the league. I just I don't
- 12:04Speaker 5: know the last year. It might last two, but they
- 12:07Speaker 5: kind of get found out really in the end. With
- 12:09Speaker 5: these boys just keep finding and Rogers.
- 12:10Speaker 4: Is one of them.
- 12:11Speaker 5: And you see there people that kind of you know,
- 12:14Speaker 5: write them off as regards being over the league and
- 12:16Speaker 5: stuff like that. But he definitely still has the arm
- 12:20Speaker 5: for it. But yeah, I have a few buddies know
- 12:24Speaker 5: who are real Rogers Rogers fans.
- 12:28Speaker 3: I'll talk about Big Ben and Louis sac And you
- 12:30Speaker 3: said you went to a number of games, or you've
- 12:31Speaker 3: been to a few games in the States or in
- 12:33Speaker 3: London or whatever. Have you ever been able to see
- 12:35Speaker 3: the Steelers or is that something on the bucket list
- 12:36Speaker 3: for next month.
- 12:37Speaker 5: I have to do it. I have to do Hopefully
- 12:39Speaker 5: it'll be in the next couple of weeks, but it's
- 12:42Speaker 5: something I have to do. I would have went to
- 12:45Speaker 5: just Boston for you know, a week trip or whatever
- 12:50Speaker 5: that the Patriots were saying all the time, so I
- 12:52Speaker 5: would just go to whatever.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Game it's on there. And yeah, there were they will
- 12:56Speaker 4: go games, but they were I actually was lock.
- 13:00Speaker 5: I got to play, I got to I got to
- 13:02Speaker 5: see Peyton Manning Rogers actually with Green Bear the Falcons.
- 13:09Speaker 5: The year after the Super Bowl the Dolphins was the
- 13:15Speaker 5: first one. Wasn't great, uh Tannehill was.
- 13:18Speaker 4: Qby for them then, but yeah, it was, It's good.
- 13:22Speaker 5: And I just everybody says like, oh, the game was
- 13:25Speaker 5: on for four I was like, what do you do?
- 13:26Speaker 5: But when you're actually there, it's so fast as so
- 13:29Speaker 5: much going on there's people on the field and all
- 13:33Speaker 5: different things. There's two minus ad breaks and there's someone
- 13:37Speaker 5: at some fello pulls from the crow kicking balls and
- 13:40Speaker 5: just non stop like and it doesn't feel like four.
- 13:42Speaker 4: It was like, it's.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Actually great, Well, if Brady's.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Your number one hog, you like Rogers is your number
- 13:48Speaker 3: one now because he's still going. Just just finally on
- 13:50Speaker 3: that we're chatting off Cameron managed a big ben.
- 13:53Speaker 4: Is that is that guy?
- 13:54Speaker 3: Is that a guy that maybe was playing whenever you
- 13:56Speaker 3: first watched the sport and his longevity was something else.
- 13:59Speaker 3: I watching his final game in Pittsburgh and the crowd,
- 14:05Speaker 3: you know that the emotion was was was was amazing
- 14:07Speaker 3: on that Monday night. Is he a guy that you
- 14:09Speaker 3: got to see much of and your time watching.
- 14:12Speaker 5: Every Sunday night, like you could see like for years
- 14:15Speaker 5: for a good few years there he was kind of
- 14:16Speaker 5: like banged up and he was like taking hard hits
- 14:20Speaker 5: and it was like, oh how long was he gonna go?
- 14:22Speaker 4: And this and that?
- 14:23Speaker 5: But he always like all those tough flers like they
- 14:26Speaker 5: Ubays found away and they always just I suppose a
- 14:29Speaker 5: winners like mentality I suppose or whatever, and just kept
- 14:33Speaker 5: going through it like and up until the very end
- 14:35Speaker 5: like he he was producing, like wasn't he? But as
- 14:38Speaker 5: he said, like there was, there's a gang of about five.
- 14:40Speaker 5: There's a gang of about five of them who every
- 14:43Speaker 5: year like they were all they always done well. They
- 14:45Speaker 5: were never there was never something let them down.
- 14:47Speaker 4: They always they always found the way. There's about fives there.
- 14:51Speaker 3: Just finally, you're still a young man. Okay, I'm not
- 14:55Speaker 3: putting you on the spot. Don't worry. I'm thirty four,
- 14:57Speaker 3: so I'm not gonna get in trouble. You're thirty six.
- 15:00Speaker 3: Very saving at the minute. You're talking with some of
- 15:02Speaker 3: these guys going into there lately at the thirties early forties,
- 15:04Speaker 3: you mentioned guys like Big Ben arn Rogers, Tom Braley.
- 15:08Speaker 3: For you as an athlete, because the awsome number of
- 15:11Speaker 3: g players is how do you know, control that and
- 15:14Speaker 3: just you know, continue to you know, ensure fitness every season,
- 15:18Speaker 3: especially when you're in such a fast piece game and
- 15:20Speaker 3: you're talking about a four our game with the NFL,
- 15:23Speaker 3: your game never stops.
- 15:26Speaker 5: I suppose the first part of it is like you
- 15:29Speaker 5: have to like, you have to like what you're doing.
- 15:31Speaker 5: You have to you have to love what you're doing
- 15:33Speaker 5: really because there's so much that has to go into
- 15:37Speaker 5: and if you're committed to putting in the time, that's
- 15:38Speaker 5: a that's required. I suppose anybody can do it, but
- 15:42Speaker 5: that's that's what's the hardest part. I suppose the the
- 15:45Speaker 5: gym every every second night and on the field every
- 15:48Speaker 5: other night, and they die it and making sure the
- 15:51Speaker 5: sleep and this is so much to it, I suppose,
- 15:54Speaker 5: and I suppose if you want it enough, you will
- 15:58Speaker 5: make it happen. Like you know, you put into work
- 15:59Speaker 5: and uh yeah, that's why I just find. I just
- 16:03Speaker 5: find training and stuff, like you know, go on the
- 16:04Speaker 5: training easy because you know you have a good team
- 16:07Speaker 5: and you've good teammates like that, you enjoy spending time with.
- 16:12Speaker 4: Everything just becomes a lot easier.
- 16:15Speaker 3: Would you enjoy a five week training camp one and
- 16:17Speaker 3: a half hours away from home? I out your family
- 16:19Speaker 3: and friends like the NFL.
- 16:22Speaker 4: Yeah one and a half where one and a half hours.
- 16:25Speaker 3: So imagine like the Steelers had a training camp. They
- 16:27Speaker 3: don't get me wrong, The families and friends came up,
- 16:29Speaker 3: you know, every few days. But it's like an artists
- 16:32Speaker 3: like an ur and a half in Pittsburgh. They're staying
- 16:33Speaker 3: in the student halls. Is that something that you would
- 16:36Speaker 3: like yourself or or do you like being able to
- 16:38Speaker 3: go into home?
- 16:40Speaker 5: Well, if if we were getting the checks there we're
- 16:42Speaker 5: getting every month or every week. Yeah, no, obviously it's
- 16:48Speaker 5: not an easy thing to do for them either. They
- 16:51Speaker 5: obviously love what they're doing. And you know what, like
- 16:53Speaker 5: I would say NFL players are the best that leads
- 16:55Speaker 5: in the world.
- 16:57Speaker 4: You know, you look at you look at.
- 16:59Speaker 5: Some of their body tie like and there's big men
- 17:01Speaker 5: on the line, and like everybody thinks they're just big men,
- 17:04Speaker 5: but they can move as well there they can move like.
- 17:06Speaker 5: So then you have the boys on the outside, do
- 17:10Speaker 5: you know, who are so agile and you know we
- 17:13Speaker 5: can probably take something from from somebody on the pitch,
- 17:17Speaker 5: like you know, from a horror point of view. And yeah,
- 17:20Speaker 5: you see those move with the boys on the outside
- 17:22Speaker 5: moving and sprinting and you know, avoiding tackles and challenges.
- 17:26Speaker 5: And I suppose there are letticism like something that you
- 17:30Speaker 5: know we look at I suppose and be.
- 17:31Speaker 4: Like, you know, that's like that's the dream.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Like so yeah, like the first man pops in the mind,
- 17:38Speaker 3: there is TJ wat J J Wats rather like for
- 17:39Speaker 3: the Steaders. The guy is huge, but.
- 17:41Speaker 5: He can move.
- 17:41Speaker 3: I've seen him run theself and it was terrified. I
- 17:44Speaker 3: couldn't imagine un I couldn't imagine running at me.
- 17:47Speaker 4: Patrick looked.
- 17:48Speaker 3: Appreciate your time and obviously this this games coming up
- 17:51Speaker 3: in cook Park and I think it's fitting to somebody
- 17:53Speaker 3: like yourself to come on. Somebody's obviously played in cook
- 17:55Speaker 3: Park many times. We obviously play around Ireland and you're
