- 0:00Speaker 1: Ah, guys, it's Cram here from Spider Bight. It's great
- 0:04Speaker 1: to be.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Here in the heavy Land and the Heavy mag and
- 0:09Speaker 2: looking forward very much to playing the tenth anniversary of
- 0:13Speaker 2: the Croxton Bound Room for the Croxton Block Party coming
- 0:16Speaker 2: up in November in Melbourne.
- 0:17Speaker 1: It's going to be.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Sick fantastic, Cram, thanks for joining us today, brother.
- 0:21Speaker 1: No worries.
- 0:22Speaker 3: So as you say, Spider Baby will be on hand
- 0:24Speaker 3: to help celebrate the tenth birthday of legendary Melbourne live
- 0:27Speaker 3: music venue, the Crosston Bandroom, which would be held at
- 0:30Speaker 3: the venue over the weekend in November one and two.
- 0:32Speaker 3: So it's not long now, mate, Have you got your
- 0:34Speaker 3: best birthday suit picked out yet?
- 0:37Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Yeah, No, it's going to be great. Like I think
- 0:44Speaker 2: we've played the Croxton I can't remember when we played
- 0:48Speaker 2: it last.
- 0:50Speaker 1: I know King Gibbson played there.
- 0:55Speaker 2: I got up with g Clip once or twice, and
- 0:58Speaker 2: I remember getting up with wolf Mother as well. And yeah,
- 1:03Speaker 2: it's just going to be great for us to actually
- 1:04Speaker 2: play there and and be part of this this great show.
- 1:08Speaker 3: And there's a great lineup of backs over the two days.
- 1:11Speaker 3: You got yourselves, there's Tropical, Fuckstorm, Catch Savage in the
- 1:14Speaker 3: Last Dreams, Rat Pat and Heat for local talent Mates.
- 1:16Speaker 3: So you guys the headline of the Sunday But are
- 1:19Speaker 3: you going to be their partying for both days?
- 1:21Speaker 2: I hope so, I'd really like to be, but I
- 1:23Speaker 2: haven't been able to to work it out yet. I've
- 1:26Speaker 2: sort of got I've got a bit of other stuff on,
- 1:27Speaker 2: so hopefully we'll get down for both days.
- 1:30Speaker 1: But we'll definitely be there for Sunday for sure.
- 1:33Speaker 3: And everyone knows what Spider Break brings live, mate, But
- 1:36Speaker 3: do you have any special birthday surprises playing for this one?
- 1:40Speaker 1: Well, it's, uh, we're just about to release the reissue
- 1:46Speaker 1: of uh Spanish Galleon and.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Uh we're pressed it on vinyl because I think it's
- 1:54Speaker 2: I think it's the it's the anniversary of that that
- 1:58Speaker 2: record's release, so we might try and do a fair
- 2:01Speaker 2: few songs off that record for this show as the
- 2:05Speaker 2: record was made in Melbourne and it was a long
- 2:07Speaker 2: time ago. So yeah, it's it's going to be sick.
- 2:10Speaker 2: But yeah, yeah, I can't wait to play.
- 2:13Speaker 1: It's gonna be awesome.
- 2:14Speaker 3: No, The Cross and Band Room has been a great
- 2:16Speaker 3: live music vendue, for the last ten years. You just
- 2:18Speaker 3: said before you can't remember the last time you played there,
- 2:20Speaker 3: but do you remember the first time you played there?
- 2:24Speaker 1: No, it's just going way back, man, Sorry, but it's
- 2:29Speaker 1: such an iconic room.
- 2:31Speaker 2: But I'm happy that they're doing the show outdoors to
- 2:36Speaker 2: make it like a block party, which obviously it is called.
- 2:38Speaker 2: So yeah, it's it's also I think about, you know,
- 2:44Speaker 2: celebrating that part of Melbourne, the North Side. So many
- 2:50Speaker 2: bands have come from there, including us, So it's a
- 2:55Speaker 2: bit of a Melbourne celebration as much as a boundary
- 2:58Speaker 2: one man and across to my two for me.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Yeah, there's a little bit off topic, bro, But you've
- 3:03Speaker 3: been around for a while and played a lot of
- 3:04Speaker 3: live music venues and sadly these days a lot of
- 3:07Speaker 3: them are having to close down for various reasons. But
- 3:10Speaker 3: from someone inside the music industry, what can other people
- 3:13Speaker 3: do to help sustain these venues and make sure they
- 3:15Speaker 3: keep going?
- 3:17Speaker 2: I would say attendance is a huge one, yeah, and
- 3:22Speaker 2: not just going to see necessarily the big bands that
- 3:28Speaker 2: you know, they're obviously the really big successful ones that's
- 3:30Speaker 2: hard to get a ticket for. Like you know, I
- 3:34Speaker 2: know when we were coming up me and in particularly
- 3:37Speaker 2: would go out and see anything. We just go to everything,
- 3:40Speaker 2: whether it was jazz or metal, or punk or or
- 3:43Speaker 2: folk or whatever. Just we just love going out and
- 3:45Speaker 2: seeing live performance. I think Melbourne is a really probably
- 3:50Speaker 2: the greatest place of that in Australia, if not one
- 3:53Speaker 2: of the greatest in the world for that, and so
- 3:58Speaker 2: I guess it also it's a cultural significance. So you know,
- 4:02Speaker 2: I personally think that things that are culturally significant should
- 4:06Speaker 2: be given some more sort of incentives by whether it
- 4:11Speaker 2: be local or state government or even federal government, to
- 4:15Speaker 2: help make them more profitable by maybe giving them tax
- 4:19Speaker 2: incentives certain things, like they would if it was a
- 4:22Speaker 2: heritage listed building. There's got to be options to make
- 4:26Speaker 2: certain venues heritage listed. I know we did a benefit
- 4:30Speaker 2: for the Tope with US and the Drones years ago
- 4:33Speaker 2: because that was going to go under. Unfortunately it was saved.
- 4:36Speaker 2: But the difficult thing is once something is gone, it's
- 4:40Speaker 2: really hard to replace it. If you can build new venues, great,
- 4:44Speaker 2: but that doesn't mean you've got to replace the old ones.
- 4:47Speaker 2: And you know, you want to be able to have
- 4:50Speaker 2: iconic venues as much as iconic bands to represent iconic cities,
- 4:56Speaker 2: and that's where people get to take their music to
- 5:01Speaker 2: the world by starting out in places like that, and
- 5:03Speaker 2: then the next generation gets to come through as well.
- 5:06Speaker 2: So I think just being supportive of the whole scene
- 5:09Speaker 2: is one of the best things you can do. And
- 5:11Speaker 2: you know, agitate if you need to put pen to
- 5:15Speaker 2: paper to signed petition to try to help a venue survive,
- 5:19Speaker 2: or contact your local MP.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Just I guess get involved in the process.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Yeah, well said brother Well said, Now, speaking of iconic,
- 5:26Speaker 3: you've great to see Ratcat with you on the stage
- 5:29Speaker 3: on a Sunday. They're celebrating thirty five years of their
- 5:31Speaker 3: EP tingles.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Yeah, that's amazing, what a record.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Yeah, that's I remember when that Aint Bad came out,
- 5:41Speaker 2: and that's one of the real big moments. I think
- 5:44Speaker 2: of that period where that sound not just sort of
- 5:51Speaker 2: became popular, but became kind of commercially viable, Like they
- 5:54Speaker 2: got that period where bands like us and I guess
- 5:58Speaker 2: about Cap before Us would suddenly get radio play on
- 6:01Speaker 2: places that they wouldn't have normally got, and that that
- 6:05Speaker 2: era is representative of that transition from I guess the
- 6:08Speaker 2: underground to a more mainstream popularity. But with the music,
- 6:16Speaker 2: This is not necessarily changing. I mean, if you look
- 6:18Speaker 2: at music now and now, we did we did good
- 6:22Speaker 2: things a couple of years ago, and like we played
- 6:24Speaker 2: with I think Sepulture on and some really epic heavy
- 6:28Speaker 2: metal bands. But then Diva were on as well in
- 6:30Speaker 2: US and so it was a it was a really
- 6:32Speaker 2: interesting mixture of styles of music. They were all equally
- 6:36Speaker 2: as as attended and loved, and I think the variation
- 6:42Speaker 2: we see in the music now, I guess as a
- 6:44Speaker 2: result of that that change that happened, you know, so
- 6:47Speaker 2: many years ago.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Yeah, and that there's so many Australian bands from that
- 6:52Speaker 3: period and your period when you started still going. Mate,
- 6:54Speaker 3: Like do you put that down to the things like
- 6:56Speaker 3: familiarity or the quality of music or consistently quality live
- 7:00Speaker 3: shows or there's got to be something because there's so
- 7:02Speaker 3: many still going.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I know, I mean we did it. We played
- 7:08Speaker 1: at the Grand Prix this year with Living End and
- 7:11Speaker 1: it was epic.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Like it's sort of like I guess, like what you're saying,
- 7:16Speaker 2: a lot of bands of area, it's like that, you know,
- 7:20Speaker 2: when you have a comeback or whatever and you do
- 7:23Speaker 2: really well, but it's not always the case that the
- 7:25Speaker 2: band will keep going, they might come back and then
- 7:28Speaker 2: you know, keep it playing intermittently. But I think all
- 7:32Speaker 2: the bands of that era that you mentioned are still
- 7:35Speaker 2: doing really big tours, playing big festivals, in some ways
- 7:40Speaker 2: more popular than ever. Maybe it's something about that era
- 7:43Speaker 2: of group bands. It's pretty hard one to, you know,
- 7:49Speaker 2: question to answer. I don't know particularly why, but there
- 7:52Speaker 2: must be something about that particular era that that really
- 7:55Speaker 2: has an effect on people.
- 7:58Speaker 3: And out of all of those bands from that era,
- 8:00Speaker 3: who do you reckon it will be the last one standing?
- 8:03Speaker 1: Jeez, I don't know.
- 8:05Speaker 2: No, I've got no idea. It really comes down to
- 8:07Speaker 2: a bunch of things. One is obviously chersonal relationships. We're
- 8:15Speaker 2: really lucky in that respect that we're very we're very
- 8:18Speaker 2: close and really enjoy each other's company and playing. And
- 8:23Speaker 2: also I think, you know, it has to be worth
- 8:25Speaker 2: your while. You want to do great, good shows, and
- 8:27Speaker 2: it'd be awesome. But yeah, I couldn't tell you the
- 8:31Speaker 2: answer that question.
- 8:32Speaker 1: I don't know. I almost don't want to answer it.
- 8:34Speaker 3: I wanted one. We touched on this before rough but
- 8:37Speaker 3: on October twenty fourth year releasing the thirtieth anniversary vinyl edition,
- 8:42Speaker 3: of the unfinished Spanish Gallion of Bindley Lake. That's the
- 8:45Speaker 3: great achievement. Rollo, what are your memories from that particular record.
- 8:52Speaker 2: It's been it's been great. We've got the vinylin in
- 8:55Speaker 2: the mail this week and it's love the artwork. It's
- 9:00Speaker 2: kind of our I guess, our first major label record too,
- 9:03Speaker 2: where we made that, Like I just said that transition
- 9:05Speaker 2: from being more of an underground band to being mainstream
- 9:08Speaker 2: and in terms of the radio play and the sales
- 9:12Speaker 2: and discuss the scope. But it's actually quite low fire
- 9:16Speaker 2: and I remember recording it with Lindsay Gravina at Berdland
- 9:21Speaker 2: and I think Lindsay had done the first Magic Dirt
- 9:25Speaker 2: record as well, which we love, and yeah, just all
- 9:30Speaker 2: sort of came together.
- 9:32Speaker 1: It was a bit of a.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Haze as well, like we've never really made a record
- 9:36Speaker 2: quite like that. And it's also I think with Finley
- 9:40Speaker 2: and the title, it does make us feel think about
- 9:43Speaker 2: our hometown and how we all came from essentially nowhere
- 9:46Speaker 2: or the middle of nowhere in a way, and just
- 9:50Speaker 2: I guess it makes us kind of look back on
- 9:53Speaker 2: our career in a way fondly. But yeah, it's a
- 9:57Speaker 2: really nice celebration to have, and we're thinking about maybe
- 10:00Speaker 2: doing into next year doing some Spanish galleon shows, which
- 10:03Speaker 2: I think would be a really good thing to do.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Then is the vinyl going to be just reproduced as
- 10:08Speaker 3: it was or you're going to have some special editions,
- 10:10Speaker 3: limited editions on there.
- 10:12Speaker 1: I think. So we did that with the.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Vinyl for IVY because we found another version of Tonight
- 10:20Speaker 2: that Janet sang on, and maybe a couple of other things,
- 10:24Speaker 2: but we thought we'd just leave this one classic as
- 10:27Speaker 2: it was because it actually never was released on vinyl,
- 10:29Speaker 2: So in a way, you know, sometimes you don't you
- 10:34Speaker 2: don't always want to do change it up. Sometimes you
- 10:37Speaker 2: just want to almost imagine that it was coming out
- 10:39Speaker 2: back in when it was released first released in ninety four,
- 10:43Speaker 2: and almost have it as a window back in time. So, yeah,
- 10:47Speaker 2: it looks really good. I we're so happy with that.
- 10:51Speaker 2: We've changed the artwork around a little bit in a
- 10:53Speaker 2: few spots, but it's all pretty much the original artwork
- 10:57Speaker 2: with some extra photos and stuff which are very funny
- 11:00Speaker 2: they take us back.
- 11:01Speaker 1: So yeah, we're really happy with it.
- 11:03Speaker 3: No, and pre sales of that start on September twenty fifth,
- 11:06Speaker 3: which is pretty surely. So where can people go to
- 11:08Speaker 3: sign up? One?
- 11:10Speaker 2: I think our label is re releasing the record Universal,
- 11:15Speaker 2: so you can go to Universal dot com and as
- 11:18Speaker 2: check out our instagram for that information as well.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Fantasy Gram, well, thanks very much for your time. Bro
- 11:25Speaker 3: Spider By playing the Croxton Rock Party November the second,
- 11:28Speaker 3: November the first, there's a party going on to two
- 11:31Speaker 3: Day is a great band's, great venue, great music. What
- 11:33Speaker 3: else could you want?
- 11:35Speaker 1: Thanks alle Man, I really appreciate it. Can't wait
