- 0:00Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 0:14Speaker 2: This is Bolivar's Sinatra Showcase.
- 0:18Speaker 3: I have discovered a young man whom I think is
- 0:20Speaker 3: going to be a superstar. He's got a good stage presence,
- 0:23Speaker 3: great set of pipes.
- 0:25Speaker 4: He's Italian.
- 0:27Speaker 3: And he has a unique way with a phrase. But
- 0:29Speaker 3: more than that, there's just something I like about the guy.
- 0:32Speaker 3: You see what I think. You'll know what I think.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Here's my new discovery, Joe Piscopo.
- 0:42Speaker 4: Hey, Joe on the radio.
- 0:44Speaker 5: Good evening. You got me, boys?
- 0:46Speaker 6: You all right?
- 0:47Speaker 4: All right? Come on, boys. We got a show to do.
- 0:49Speaker 4: Here we go.
- 0:50Speaker 5: I'll tell you, it's a crazy night. Live as live
- 0:53Speaker 5: can be. Piscopo live on the radio. And it's such
- 0:57Speaker 5: a wild night, and I'll tell you all about it
- 0:58Speaker 5: as we go along. But I got to tell you,
- 1:00Speaker 5: first and foremost, we are featuring... Sinatra at the Sands.
- 1:04Speaker 5: This is a classic re-release that was just released yesterday, okay?
- 1:09Speaker 5: And so it's like this comes from the Sinatra family,
- 1:12Speaker 5: and Charlie Pignon is going to join us in about
- 1:15Speaker 5: a half an hour, all right? Charles Pignon is the
- 1:16Speaker 5: president of Frank Sinatra Enterprises, and he, along with Tina,
- 1:20Speaker 5: of course, and Mr. Finkelstein, and the whole Sinatra team,
- 1:23Speaker 5: they put together this beautiful compilation. You can get it
- 1:28Speaker 5: at sinatra.com. Not a commercial. I got to tell you something.
- 1:31Speaker 5: This is unbelievable. They took the Sands album, our favorite album, right?
- 1:35Speaker 5: Sinatra at the Sands. And they put different shows, like
- 1:40Speaker 5: almost five different shows lined up, lined up, and one
- 1:44Speaker 5: right after another. And each show, if you're a Frank
- 1:46Speaker 5: Sinatra aficionado like I am, you'll know every song that
- 1:50Speaker 5: he sings, if it's at a live event, venue then
- 1:52Speaker 5: it's different every single time like a brand new song
- 1:55Speaker 5: that's what this this uh whole sinatra at the stands
- 1:59Speaker 5: a re-release 60th anniversary by the way they have a
- 2:02Speaker 5: five cd package you can get cds i don't know
- 2:05Speaker 5: what you're playing on but they got the cds i
- 2:08Speaker 5: actually have my cd player at home so let me
- 2:11Speaker 5: tell you we're gonna go into it we're gonna have
- 2:13Speaker 5: a great time i'm gonna play uh things that you
- 2:16Speaker 5: haven't heard before all right uh on this uh on
- 2:19Speaker 5: this re-release And, you know, when he takes the break,
- 2:22Speaker 5: he takes that tea break. It's a whole different stand-up.
- 2:25Speaker 5: You and I have memorized. Admit it. You got memorized
- 2:29Speaker 5: every time he goes into something at Sinatra. You and
- 2:31Speaker 5: I know what he's going to say, right? And you
- 2:34Speaker 5: look forward to it, right? And this man here is
- 2:36Speaker 5: going to lead me down the path to righteousness and
- 2:39Speaker 5: all that other mother jazz, you know? That's like Frank Sinatra.
- 2:42Speaker 5: So it's different each time as we play it. In
- 2:45Speaker 5: the meantime. I'm here with you live. And if you
- 2:48Speaker 5: want to give us a call, it's 800-848-9222, 800-848-9222. And
- 2:54Speaker 5: we're putting it together, following Cousin Brucie. Had a great
- 2:57Speaker 5: time with the legendary Cousin Brucie and Vinny Maduno. We
- 3:00Speaker 5: were Tuesday. We were at the Wingfoot Country Club. What
- 3:02Speaker 5: were we doing at such a fancy place? I have
- 3:04Speaker 5: no idea, but we ripped it up and we had
- 3:06Speaker 5: a ball. Always an honor to follow the great Bruce Morrow.
- 3:09Speaker 5: Elias Raff running the board. And we got Ricky at
- 3:12Speaker 5: the board now. And he's new, so he's going to
- 3:16Speaker 5: get acclimated to what we're doing. So it's live and
- 3:19Speaker 5: anything can happen. But in the meantime, let's go back
- 3:23Speaker 5: to January 27th, 1966, the first show of Frank Sinatra
- 3:30Speaker 5: with Count Basie, Quincy Jones, arranging and conducting. And this
- 3:34Speaker 5: is Come Fly With Me.
- 4:03Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 4:23Speaker 8: Thank you. Come fly with me, we'll fly, we'll fly away.
- 4:37Speaker 8: If you can use some exotic booze, there's a bar
- 4:41Speaker 8: in far Bombay. Come on, fly with me, we'll fly,
- 4:46Speaker 8: we'll fly away.
- 4:49Speaker 4: Come fly with me, we'll float down to Peru. In
- 4:55Speaker 4: Llama Land, there's a.
- 4:57Speaker 8: One-man band And he'll toot his flute for you Come on,
- 5:01Speaker 8: fly with me We'll float down in the blue.
- 5:06Speaker 4: Once I get.
- 5:07Speaker 8: You up there Where the air is rare and fine.
- 5:14Speaker 4: We'll just fly, sorry I Once I get you.
- 5:20Speaker 9: Up there.
- 5:21Speaker 8: I'll be holding you so near.
- 5:26Speaker 4: You might hear all the.
- 5:29Speaker 8: Angels cheer Because we're together weather-wise It's such a lovely
- 5:34Speaker 8: day Just say those words, we'll beat those birds down
- 5:40Speaker 8: to Acapulco Bay. It is perfect for a flying honeymoon,
- 5:48Speaker 8: they say. Come on, fly with me, we'll fly, we'll fly.
- 5:54Speaker 10: We'll fly and fly. Once I get you up there Where.
- 6:16Speaker 11: The air is so rarefied We will start to glide
- 6:22Speaker 11: Absolutely petrified Once I get you up there I'll be
- 6:28Speaker 11: holding you so very near ¶ You might even.
- 6:34Speaker 8: Hear a gang of angels cheer ¶ ¶ Because we're
- 6:38Speaker 8: together weather-wise ¶ ¶ It's such a groovy day ¶ ¶.
- 6:44Speaker 4: You just say that word and.
- 6:46Speaker 8: I'll whip your bird ¶ ¶ Down to Acapulco Bay
- 6:50Speaker 8: ¶ ¶ It is perfect for a flying honeymoon, they
- 6:55Speaker 8: say ¶ ¶ Come on, fly with me, we'll fly,
- 6:59Speaker 8: we'll fly ¶.
- 7:02Speaker 4: Pack up, let's fly away. And don't tell your papa.
- 7:13Speaker 5: Don't tell your papa. We're listening to Sinatra at the Sands,
- 7:17Speaker 5: the re-release. And this is from Capital UME and Frank
- 7:21Speaker 5: Sinatra Enterprises. And they have announced the 60th anniversary 5-CD
- 7:26Speaker 5: box set. A two LP vinyl file of Frank Sinatra's
- 7:30Speaker 5: Sinatra at the Sands with Count Basie and the orchestra.
- 7:33Speaker 5: And that came out yesterday. And I'm still waiting for
- 7:37Speaker 5: my album. I got the double album. I ordered the CDs.
- 7:40Speaker 5: I ordered everything. But what we did, what Elias and
- 7:42Speaker 5: I did this week. We downloaded everything, and we have
- 7:47Speaker 5: it ready to go for you on the air. So
- 7:49Speaker 5: you're going to hear, especially if you love Frank Sinatra
- 7:52Speaker 5: like most of us do, you can hear and get
- 7:55Speaker 5: the little ins and outs going into what we call
- 7:57Speaker 5: the weeds about Francis Albert Sinatra. and you'll hear it.
- 8:01Speaker 5: For example, on this next song, I Got a Crush
- 8:03Speaker 5: on You, you know, so he would go back and
- 8:06Speaker 5: forth with, I believe it was Eddie Lockjaw Davis, the
- 8:09Speaker 5: premier sax player for, one of the premier sax players
- 8:11Speaker 5: for the Basie Orchestra. Remember, he would go back and forth.
- 8:14Speaker 5: He doesn't go back and forth here, but he has
- 8:16Speaker 5: fun with this. Also, oh, I gotta tell you this.
- 8:18Speaker 5: I forgot to tell you this. These are like, I mean,
- 8:21Speaker 5: I have a poster, and it goes like the show,
- 8:24Speaker 5: when Sinatra at the Sands, It says the shows are like,
- 8:26Speaker 5: I think it started at 9. I think Basie did
- 8:30Speaker 5: a warm-up, like almost a 45-minute hour warm-up. I'm going
- 8:33Speaker 5: to ask Charlie Pignon about it. And then Mr. S
- 8:35Speaker 5: went on like an hour and a half later. So
- 8:37Speaker 5: he's on stage like 10. And then his second show
- 8:40Speaker 5: was like 1, 2 in the morning. And what I
- 8:42Speaker 5: love about this and what Charlie found, Mr. Pignon found,
- 8:46Speaker 5: is that you could hear it in Mr. Sinatra's voice.
- 8:48Speaker 5: I love it. So here it is. January 27, 1966.
- 8:49Speaker 5: I was young like you at that age. You know,
- 8:55Speaker 5: back in those days. Yes, sir. This is Mr. Sinatra.
- 8:58Speaker 5: Check it out. I've got a crush on you.
- 9:04Speaker 4: Thank you. Thank you.
- 9:09Speaker 8: How glad the many millions of Annabelles and Lillians would
- 9:13Speaker 8: be To capture me But you had such persistence You
- 9:20Speaker 8: wore down my resistance I fell And it was swell.
- 9:27Speaker 8: I'm your big and brave and handsome Romy.
- 9:31Speaker 4: What a ridiculous line.
- 9:34Speaker 8: How I won you, I shall never, never know. It's
- 9:40Speaker 8: not that I'm attractive. It's not that I'm attractive. It's
- 9:43Speaker 8: not that I'm attractive. I know this goddamn song. It's
- 9:47Speaker 8: not that I'm attractive, but oh.
- 9:49Speaker 4: My heart grew active when you.
- 9:53Speaker 4: I became a Jew, I came into view.
- 9:59Speaker 8: I've got a crush on you Sweetie pie All the
- 10:10Speaker 8: day and night time.
- 10:14Speaker 4: Hear me sigh.
- 10:18Speaker 8: I never had the least notion That I could fall
- 10:24Speaker 8: with so much emotion.
- 10:32Speaker 4: Could you cool, could you care For a lovely cottage
- 10:42Speaker 4: that we could.
- 10:43Speaker 8: Share The world will pardon my mush.
- 10:52Speaker 4: But I have got to.
- 10:56Speaker 9: Crush my baby on you.
- 11:09Speaker 8: Could you cool? Could you care? For a lovely cottage
- 11:19Speaker 8: That we might share The whole world will pardon my
- 11:27Speaker 8: mush But I have got a.
- 11:34Speaker 12: Crush My baby on you.
- 11:38Speaker 7: Oh yeah.
- 11:50Speaker 13: Oh, yeah.
- 11:50Speaker 5: Well, let me apologize. I thought we censored something. So Mr.
- 11:54Speaker 5: Sinatra may be a little loose. It's two o'clock in
- 11:57Speaker 5: the morning. And I apologize for that, especially since I
- 12:01Speaker 5: just came from I was supposed to run into New York,
- 12:03Speaker 5: if I may, for an aside. I apologize for that.
- 12:06Speaker 5: using the Lord's name in vain. I do apologize. I
- 12:08Speaker 5: didn't know that. I was not supposed to be on.
- 12:10Speaker 5: And that's my fault. I'll take the hit. I should
- 12:11Speaker 5: have edited it. I should have put a big red
- 12:13Speaker 5: flag on that. Because you know what? What do you
- 12:15Speaker 5: think I was? I was going to run into New York.
- 12:17Speaker 5: I wanted to be in the studio. I'm broadcasting from
- 12:20Speaker 5: La Casa di Fiscopo. And we welcome you to the house.
- 12:22Speaker 5: I appreciate it. It is an honor to be in
- 12:25Speaker 5: your car, in your home, wherever you are. And we're
- 12:27Speaker 5: broadcasting live. And by the way, you may be listening
- 12:29Speaker 5: on Sunday morning. But right now, for us, as I read...
- 12:32Speaker 5: As I hit the microphone here, it's live, Saturday night live,
- 12:36Speaker 5: you know, live as live can be. So I was
- 12:39Speaker 5: supposed to go to New York, so I go. But
- 12:41Speaker 5: then I had a friend who said, oh, you can
- 12:42Speaker 5: stop by and say hi to my church. And so
- 12:46Speaker 5: I went to a little beautiful church with a beautiful community.
- 12:50Speaker 5: And I guess I could say St. Bridget. And I
- 12:53Speaker 5: went over there and I stayed and I got so
- 12:56Speaker 5: taken aback by how beautiful the people were. Nicest people
- 12:59Speaker 5: in the world. I get a microphone, and then I
- 13:01Speaker 5: see a piano, and then I start singing. And then
- 13:04Speaker 5: Stacey's there. She's looking at the clock like, Joe, you
- 13:06Speaker 5: got to make New York. You got to make New York, kid.
- 13:09Speaker 5: And the crowd was so great. Father John, we love you.
- 13:12Speaker 5: My brother Peter and Mia, we love you. And it
- 13:15Speaker 5: was great. And so I was closer to my house
- 13:17Speaker 5: than I was to New York. I put the Waze in,
- 13:19Speaker 5: and New York, no way I was making New York.
- 13:21Speaker 5: So I'm broadcasting from the house. But again, hopefully that
- 13:26Speaker 5: made up for the little slip we had here. showing
- 13:29Speaker 5: up at the church and doing my good deed. All right. Hey,
- 13:32Speaker 5: I'll tell you what. It's Piscopo live as live could be, baby.
- 13:35Speaker 5: This ain't no podcast, you know, unless you're listening on
- 13:38Speaker 5: Sunday morning, and we appreciate you listening on Sunday morning,
- 13:41Speaker 5: and we appreciate you listening right now. Let's go back
- 13:43Speaker 5: to the sands. 1966, Mr. Sinatra's staple song, I've Got
- 13:48Speaker 5: You Under My Skin.
- 13:49Speaker 4: Alan Morris. I've got you under my skin I've got you.
- 14:10Speaker 8: Deep in the heart of me So deep in my
- 14:16Speaker 8: heart that you're really a part of me I've got
- 14:23Speaker 8: you under my skin I've tried so not to give
- 14:33Speaker 8: in I have said to myself this affair.
- 14:39Speaker 4: It never will move so well.
- 14:44Speaker 8: But why should I try to resist when baby I
- 14:48Speaker 8: know damn well That.
- 14:51Speaker 4: I've got you under my skin.
- 14:58Speaker 8: I'd sacrifice anything come what might for the sake Having
- 15:04Speaker 8: you near in spite of a warning voice.
- 15:07Speaker 4: That comes in the night, it repeats, it repeats in my.
- 15:11Speaker 8: Ear Don't you know you fool ain't never gonna win
- 15:19Speaker 8: Use your mentality, wake up to reality And each time
- 15:28Speaker 8: I do, just the thought of you makes me stop
- 15:32Speaker 8: before I begin. Because I've got you under my skin.
- 15:46Speaker 4: Everybody's got to go somewhere.
- 16:27Speaker 8: I would sacrifice anything, come what might For the sake
- 16:32Speaker 8: of having you near In spite of a warning voice
- 16:37Speaker 8: Comes in the night, it repeats how it yells in
- 16:40Speaker 8: my ear Don't you know, you fool, you ain't never
- 16:45Speaker 8: gonna win Why not choose your mentality Wake up, step
- 16:51Speaker 8: up to reality And each time I do Just the
- 16:57Speaker 8: thought of you Makes me stop just before I.
- 17:00Speaker 4: Begin Because I've got you Under my skin Yeah, you
- 17:10Speaker 4: grab me Under the skin.
- 17:20Speaker 2: This is both of us. Sinatra Showcase.
- 17:33Speaker 4: Oh, oh, oh.
- 17:46Speaker 2: This is Bolivar's Sinatra Showcase with your host, Joe Piscopo
- 17:52Speaker 2: on Music Radio. Music This is Bolivar's Sinatra Showcase, with
- 18:13Speaker 2: your host, Joe Piscopo, on Music Radio.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 18:30Speaker 8: One day you turn around And it's summer Next day
- 18:38Speaker 8: you turn around and it's fall And all the winters
- 18:45Speaker 8: and the springs of a lifetime Whatever happened to them all?
- 19:01Speaker 8: As a man who has always had the wandering ways
- 19:12Speaker 8: Now I'm looking back to yesterdays Till a long forgotten
- 19:21Speaker 8: love appears.
- 19:29Speaker 4: And I find.
- 19:31Speaker 8: That I'm sighing softly.
- 19:37Speaker 4: As I near.
- 19:40Speaker 8: September The warm September.
- 19:50Speaker 4: Of my year.
- 19:57Speaker 8: As a man Who has never paused.
- 20:04Speaker 4: At carousels.
- 20:08Speaker 8: Now I'm stopping by at Wishing Wells And the laughter's
- 20:16Speaker 8: music to my ears And I find That I'm sighing
- 20:30Speaker 8: softly as I near September The warm September of my years.
- 20:48Speaker 4: The golden warm.
- 20:51Speaker 8: September of my years.
- 21:12Speaker 9: Mr.
- 21:12Speaker 5: Sinatra, live from Vegas on this re-release of Sinatra at
- 21:15Speaker 5: the Sands. Before we continue, let me go to Janet
- 21:18Speaker 5: real quick, calling in.
- 21:19Speaker 9: Hi, Janet.
- 21:19Speaker 5: Good evening to you. How are you doing tonight?
- 21:21Speaker 2: Hi, Joe.
- 21:22Speaker 1: How are you doing?
- 21:23Speaker 9: Good.
- 21:23Speaker 5: I'm excited about this. Wild to hear different, even though
- 21:26Speaker 5: some things may slip through, we don't really want to
- 21:29Speaker 5: slip through. It makes it exciting. You know, you never
- 21:31Speaker 5: know where Mr. Sinatra is going, but it's a blast
- 21:34Speaker 5: to celebrate the re-release of the Sands, you know?
- 21:37Speaker 1: It is, and you know what, Joe? It's amazing how you,
- 21:41Speaker 1: on the road, in the studio, in the house, wherever
- 21:44Speaker 1: you are, you never leave us alone.
- 21:47Speaker 5: I'm trying to stay with you, and I think you
- 21:49Speaker 5: know the saying, anything we can play for you as
- 21:51Speaker 5: we go down the road?
- 21:52Speaker 1: Joe, you know, I was going through some research this week,
- 21:54Speaker 1: and I came across something we haven't heard in a
- 21:56Speaker 1: while called Almost Like Being in Love, and I noticed
- 22:00Speaker 1: the tuba in that song was amazing.
- 22:03Speaker 5: Yeah, almost. But you know what? That's Billy. Billy May
- 22:06Speaker 5: would use a tuba in the background and he used
- 22:09Speaker 5: the actual tuba. It's unbelievable. Not a marathon sax, not
- 22:12Speaker 5: a bass trombone or anything like that. It was a tuba.
- 22:14Speaker 5: Only you would notice that. Janet, thank you for listening.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Can I say one more thing? I'm so happy you're
- 22:20Speaker 1: going to have Charlie Pignone on tonight. I always learn
- 22:22Speaker 1: something when he's on and I'm so happy when you do.
- 22:25Speaker 13: Yes.
- 22:26Speaker 5: Listen, we're going to have some fun. Charlie's coming up
- 22:28Speaker 5: in about a couple of minutes. He's going to come up.
- 22:30Speaker 5: You listen up. And Janet, thank you. And we send
- 22:32Speaker 5: our love to you, okay?
- 22:34Speaker 14: Thanks.

- 26:49Speaker 5: This is, congratulations, this 60th anniversary 5CD box set. Two LPs,
- 26:55Speaker 5: the vinyl file of Frank Sinatra, Sinatra at the Sands. Charlie,
- 26:59Speaker 5: what was the impetus? Because you know it's everybody's favorite album.
- 27:02Speaker 5: I listened to the whole thing. I love it. Every album,
- 27:06Speaker 5: every cut, every CD, it's like a whole different show.
- 27:11Speaker 15: Yeah, well, you realize.
- 27:13Speaker 5: Yeah, congratulations on that.
- 27:16Speaker 15: Frank, I appreciate it, Joe, and I appreciate what you
- 27:19Speaker 15: guys do at the station, you, John, and Margo promoting Frank. But,
- 27:23Speaker 15: you know, it is probably the greatest live album ever.
- 27:25Speaker 15: And when you listen to them in total, you'll see
- 27:28Speaker 15: that Frank never sang this song the same way once.
- 27:32Speaker 15: I mean, the tempos are a little different. And the
- 27:35Speaker 15: most revealing things when I was going through the tapes
- 27:37Speaker 15: were the monologues. And I love the last– when you
- 27:41Speaker 15: listen to the last monologue– He introduces Johnny Mandel. He
- 27:45Speaker 15: introduces Don Costa, even talks to Don in Italian. And
- 27:48Speaker 15: it was just it's just the way Larry Walsh makes this.
- 27:53Speaker 15: I know when it was originally mixed, it sounded great.
- 27:55Speaker 15: Sonny Burke, you know, all plaudits to the great producer
- 27:59Speaker 15: Sonny Burke, the greatest live album ever. But Larry makes
- 28:02Speaker 15: this and you have Atmos. man, it sounds like you're
- 28:06Speaker 15: in the Copa room. Even Steve Wynn, I had sent
- 28:08Speaker 15: it ahead to Steve Wynn, who probably has the greatest
- 28:11Speaker 15: sound system in the world. And he said, it just
- 28:13Speaker 15: took me back to the sands. And it just takes
- 28:17Speaker 15: you back. And you realize how great this man was.
- 28:22Speaker 15: My only concern was when we started going through these
- 28:25Speaker 15: tapes years ago, because I released a couple of shows
- 28:28Speaker 15: on the Vegas box set and on a Jack Daniels thing.
- 28:31Speaker 15: The one thing that I would criticize Sonny Burke for
- 28:34Speaker 15: was they were there for four weeks. Why wait till
- 28:37Speaker 15: the last week to tape Frank knowing? And you hear
- 28:41Speaker 15: in the monologues that he went out to see Sarah Vaughn.
- 28:43Speaker 15: He was out till seven in the morning every night.
- 28:46Speaker 15: I know their mindset was probably he'll know it, you know,
- 28:50Speaker 15: like the back of his hand. But I would have
- 28:52Speaker 15: done it the third week if it were me.
- 28:55Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 28:56Speaker 5: I love his voice. I love his voice, his second
- 28:59Speaker 5: show voice. I love the register of his voice, Charlie,
- 29:02Speaker 5: you know? And you're right. He talks about Sarah Vaughan.
- 29:05Speaker 5: He goes, oh, my gosh, I bring tears to my eyes.
- 29:07Speaker 5: You have to listen to this. I was talking with
- 29:09Speaker 5: Charles Pignon with Joe Piscopo in Boulevard Sinatra Showcase about
- 29:13Speaker 5: the re-release, the 60th anniversary re-release. You got to get this.
- 29:16Speaker 5: You go to FrankSinatra.com and listen to it. You could
- 29:19Speaker 5: go in the car, Charlie. I tell you, thank you. Treasures,
- 29:23Speaker 5: what you did was genius. Everything you bring. Listen, we
- 29:27Speaker 5: know each other too long.
- 29:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 29:29Speaker 5: Patronize 40 plus years.
- 29:30Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 29:31Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 29:31Speaker 5: And God bless you for what you're doing, man, because
- 29:34Speaker 5: this is like you're right there and your point is
- 29:37Speaker 5: so well taken. And let me stay on this for
- 29:38Speaker 5: a second. When Mr. Sinatra would do a song, if
- 29:41Speaker 5: I could play Comply With Me, if it's at different venues,
- 29:44Speaker 5: if it's in Japan, if it's in Australia, wherever, it's
- 29:46Speaker 5: a different song. It's like a complete different song. And
- 29:49Speaker 5: this is what the album is. It's like it's like
- 29:52Speaker 5: it's like a five CD box set of different songs
- 29:55Speaker 5: from Mr. S. Was that a concerted effort? Was it
- 29:59Speaker 5: just he wanted to just change it.
- 30:00Speaker 15: Up a little bit? Yeah, I think it was just
- 30:03Speaker 15: the mood he was in. The one great thing about
- 30:05Speaker 15: it for me being there. So being around these people
- 30:08Speaker 15: so long is I know I knew Quincy and loved
- 30:11Speaker 15: him and Bill Miller.
- 30:12Speaker 5: So yeah.
- 30:13Speaker 15: I had probably 60 hours with Bill Miller and Al
- 30:16Speaker 15: Viola and the musicians on tape. And Quincy, I had
- 30:18Speaker 15: 10 hours. I went up to his house over the years.
- 30:21Speaker 15: And I remember Quincy saying to me that one, and
- 30:25Speaker 15: I think I put it in the booklet, and when
- 30:27Speaker 15: I heard Frank mention Sarah Vaughan, Quincy said one night
- 30:30Speaker 15: him and Basie came back in at three in the
- 30:32Speaker 15: morning and Frank was standing in the lounge saying, where
- 30:36Speaker 15: the hell were you two guys? And they're like, we
- 30:37Speaker 15: went to see Sarah Vaughan. He's like, why didn't you
- 30:39Speaker 15: ask me? And they took him the next night and
- 30:42Speaker 15: you can hear him in the monologue say, and then
- 30:44Speaker 15: I even had, then when I was going through the
- 30:46Speaker 15: Bill Miller tapes, Bill said, oh yeah, Frank was so,
- 30:49Speaker 15: could not believe Sarah Vaughn. In fact, he was so
- 30:52Speaker 15: blown away that when about a decade later, he started
- 30:56Speaker 15: in the 74 and 75, he would do a tour
- 30:59Speaker 15: with Ella. He'd do some dates and Ella could not
- 31:01Speaker 15: do the London Palladium. And Frank said to Bill, get
- 31:05Speaker 15: Sarah Vaughn. And Sarah Vaughn, Basie and Frank did everything.
- 31:08Speaker 15: a week at the Palladium in 75 because Ella couldn't
- 31:10Speaker 15: do it. So, and you hear him talk about, you know,
- 31:14Speaker 15: the righteous brothers, he's the one that hired there. He
- 31:17Speaker 15: would actually hire the righteous brothers. And I was just
- 31:19Speaker 15: lucky to find that I put in the booklet where they,
- 31:23Speaker 15: they did. I scanned newspapers from Vegas back then. And
- 31:27Speaker 15: they said, this is an honor. Frank Sinatra picked us
- 31:29Speaker 15: and we're playing in the lounge. And Frank mentions it.
- 31:32Speaker 15: And it, it's almost like you were there listening to them,
- 31:35Speaker 15: you know, to these shows. It's just great.
- 31:37Speaker 5: Beautifully produced, by the way, Sarah Vaughan. She is, you know,
- 31:41Speaker 5: one of the great Jersey girls from Newark, New Jersey.
- 31:44Speaker 5: We're very, very proud of Sarah Vaughan. I mean, honestly, Charlie,
- 31:47Speaker 5: where did you find the tapes, man? How did you
- 31:49Speaker 5: find them?
- 31:50Speaker 15: Oh, the tapes have been there. I knew there were
- 31:53Speaker 15: 10 nights. And like I said, when we did the
- 31:55Speaker 15: Vegas box set, I specifically found a show that was not,
- 31:59Speaker 15: you know, Sonny did not make a roadmap of where
- 32:04Speaker 15: he took each song from. So if you listen to
- 32:06Speaker 15: the first show on this, that that's where a lot
- 32:10Speaker 15: of the I would say 40 percent of the original
- 32:13Speaker 15: album came from. In fact, the monologue, he trimmed it.
- 32:16Speaker 15: But the monologue is is mostly from that show. And
- 32:20Speaker 15: then because Frank was really loose on those second show monologues. And,
- 32:24Speaker 15: you know, he even says, I'll leave a wake up
- 32:27Speaker 15: call for three in the morning. It's just it's just infectious.
- 32:31Speaker 15: The thing that I'm hearing from people is they listen
- 32:33Speaker 15: to one and then they can't stop listening to the others.
- 32:35Speaker 5: It's exactly right, man. Give me the timeline. Basie warbs
- 32:40Speaker 5: up the crowd. They started at like 9 p.m. But
- 32:43Speaker 5: they all Mr. S was Mr. S was on like
- 32:46Speaker 5: his second show was like two in the morning, was
- 32:48Speaker 5: it not?
- 32:49Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 32:49Speaker 15: And and I was very lucky because our mutual friend,
- 32:52Speaker 15: Johnny Pizza, I had known Pat Cooper. but I didn't
- 32:55Speaker 15: know Pat's widow and Johnny connected me with Pat's widow.
- 32:58Speaker 15: And I called her about a year ago because Pat
- 33:00Speaker 15: was the comedian. It was Basie would come out and
- 33:03Speaker 15: do four or five tracks. In fact, about 20 years ago,
- 33:07Speaker 15: we gave reprise the tapes because they did tape Basie.
- 33:13Speaker 15: And there's a CD that came out before Frank, the Basie,
- 33:17Speaker 15: you know, one of the Basie show, but I, I
- 33:19Speaker 15: had to break the news to Emily, Pat's widow. I said,
- 33:22Speaker 15: They stopped the tape when they announced Pat Cooper. They
- 33:25Speaker 15: didn't take the comedian, and then it comes back on.
- 33:28Speaker 15: And then what they did was Wally Heider and United
- 33:32Speaker 15: Recorders were there recording Frank and the shows. They were
- 33:35Speaker 15: not patched into the PA system of the Sands. So
- 33:38Speaker 15: when you hear our shows, you're hearing Doug Cody, who
- 33:41Speaker 15: was the announcer at the Sands, but he's not present
- 33:45Speaker 15: because he wasn't patched into Wally. What Sonny Burke did was,
- 33:49Speaker 15: was when they put this album out and he realized
- 33:51Speaker 15: that he hired William Conrad, who was a great radio voice,
- 33:55Speaker 15: later became Canon. He hired William Conrad to do the voiceover,
- 34:00Speaker 15: and that's what you hear on the original Sands album.
- 34:03Speaker 15: That's not from the show. William Conrad went in a
- 34:06Speaker 15: month before this album was released, Sinatra at the Sands,
- 34:09Speaker 15: and did a voiceover because they had not patched in
- 34:13Speaker 15: to the Sands PA while he had his four-track machine going.
- 34:17Speaker 15: But Pat, yeah, Pat did a show. And then basically
- 34:20Speaker 15: and I was so lucky because Emily went through her files.
- 34:24Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 34:24Speaker 15: And I knew that Dean and you can hear Frank
- 34:26Speaker 15: say on the show that, you know, the day go
- 34:29Speaker 15: came in and did Monday nights for me. Dean actually
- 34:32Speaker 15: did a show with Basie every Monday night for those
- 34:35Speaker 15: four weeks. And Pat took a wonderful picture of Dean
- 34:38Speaker 15: Martin that we put in the booklet. And if you
- 34:40Speaker 15: look behind Dean, you can see the times of the
- 34:42Speaker 15: two shows. It's a count Basie, Pat Cooper, Dean Martin.
- 34:46Speaker 15: I think it says 8 and 12 a.m. And Dean
- 34:51Speaker 15: took a great picture that we have in there of
- 34:53Speaker 15: Basie with Pat Cooper. And I've got Pat's recollections in there.
- 34:58Speaker 15: So I've got everybody in there that I could still find,
- 35:02Speaker 15: even people that were passed away like Pat. I was
- 35:04Speaker 15: lucky that Emily shared what he had. And it's just
- 35:08Speaker 15: a wonderful package.
- 35:09Speaker 5: Pat was the best. They were a blast. I can't
- 35:12Speaker 5: even imagine the Cooper room, not only with Basie, with Cooper.
- 35:15Speaker 5: And then, of course, can you imagine, Pat?
- 35:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 35:18Speaker 15: Well, there was a great there's a great story. If
- 35:20Speaker 15: you have time that Pat, please. And Pat did his
- 35:24Speaker 15: first show and it ran a little long. And Frank
- 35:27Speaker 15: or somebody sent Jilly to go talk to Pat and say,
- 35:31Speaker 15: you got to cut one joke. And why don't you
- 35:34Speaker 15: cut this specific joke, which was the longest joke, which
- 35:38Speaker 15: Pat said to Jilly, that's my best joke. He said, well,
- 35:40Speaker 15: that's what the old man said. So he went back
- 35:42Speaker 15: and he said to Frank, you want me to cut
- 35:45Speaker 15: that joke?
- 35:46Speaker 13: Cut.
- 35:46Speaker 4: Cut.
- 35:46Speaker 15: I've got you under my skin out of your set.
- 35:50Speaker 15: He never worked with Frank again.
- 35:57Speaker 4: We wondered.
- 35:58Speaker 5: I'm not surprised because I listen. I know I knew Pat.
- 36:02Speaker 4: Well, I love it.
- 36:04Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 36:04Speaker 15: If you knew that we love them, but he could be. And,
- 36:06Speaker 15: you know, he just rubbed Frank because you would think
- 36:09Speaker 15: what a great combination that Pat with the Italian humor
- 36:12Speaker 15: should have been opening for Frank in those years. You know,
- 36:16Speaker 15: we all love and miss Tom Dreesen. But in the
- 36:19Speaker 15: 60s and 70s, you wondered why Pat wasn't in the
- 36:23Speaker 15: Pat Henry spot, you know, with the Italian humor.
- 36:25Speaker 5: Now we know, thanks to Charles Fignon. Charlie, we love, listen,
- 36:30Speaker 5: please stay with me a couple more seconds. Charlie, on
- 36:32Speaker 5: disc four. Mr. S, and as you listen, we invite
- 36:37Speaker 5: everybody to check out this new re-release of Sinatra at
- 36:40Speaker 5: the Sands. It's got pictures. It's got notes. It's got
- 36:43Speaker 5: Charlie Pignone really brought forth. Like, as he says, you'll
- 36:46Speaker 5: feel like you're right back there. First show, second show,
- 36:49Speaker 5: back in the 60s. And a lot of us were
- 36:51Speaker 5: like kids in junior high school and in high school.
- 36:54Speaker 5: Disc 4, a little spicy at the end of those...
- 36:58Speaker 5: Those tea breaks there with Elizabeth Taylor jokes.
- 37:01Speaker 4: Hysterical.
- 37:02Speaker 13: Oh, yeah.
- 37:03Speaker 15: And yeah, because she was on Sammy's special. The other
- 37:06Speaker 15: interesting thing about this, and I'm sure Sinatra fans and
- 37:09Speaker 15: you pick up on it. So he he never recorded
- 37:11Speaker 15: the shadow of your smile. But when I saw Quincy's
- 37:15Speaker 15: arrangement and I looked in our in their book, we
- 37:17Speaker 15: have six or eight months before this engagement. Nelson Riddle
- 37:22Speaker 15: did an arrangement of the shadow of your smile. Frank
- 37:24Speaker 15: did it several times live, but when they went to
- 37:27Speaker 15: the sands, he had Quincy revise the arrangements for the
- 37:32Speaker 15: Basie orchestra. So there was never a recording of it.
- 37:36Speaker 15: I'm hoping I co-produced an album about two years ago,
- 37:39Speaker 15: Seth MacFarlane of the lost Sinatra arrangements. And on number two,
- 37:44Speaker 15: when I told him there's a Nelson Riddle arrangement of
- 37:47Speaker 15: the shadow of your smile, he said, Oh, We got
- 37:49Speaker 15: to save that for this, too, because it's that, you know,
- 37:52Speaker 15: I got to have some great stuff on this, too.
- 37:53Speaker 15: But there is a Nelson Riddle arrangement of The Shadow
- 37:56Speaker 15: of Your Smile. Frank was going to do that originally
- 37:59Speaker 15: on one of the albums and then took it off.
- 38:01Speaker 15: And then, you know, Quincy tells a great story. He's
- 38:04Speaker 15: told it many times when they were flying up to Vegas.
- 38:08Speaker 15: Frank said, let's put The Shadow of Your Smile. I
- 38:12Speaker 15: think Johnny Mandel is coming up.
- 38:14Speaker 13: Let's put that.
- 38:14Speaker 15: Can you write an arrangement? So we have it when
- 38:17Speaker 15: we open there. And Quincy said, I can, but do
- 38:19Speaker 15: you know the song? And Frank said, don't worry about it.
- 38:22Speaker 15: Quincy said, Frank took out a lined pad, yellow pad
- 38:28Speaker 15: and started writing the lyrics down. And Quincy said he
- 38:31Speaker 15: fell asleep for a half hour. And when he woke up,
- 38:33Speaker 15: Frank was still writing those lyrics. So subconsciously he kept
- 38:38Speaker 15: writing and writing them. They would be in his mind.
- 38:41Speaker 15: And he, and Quincy would tell that story to me
- 38:43Speaker 15: all the time, how the old man just was so
- 38:45Speaker 15: dedicated and, you know, Quincy used to love to say
- 38:48Speaker 15: it's like people would say they'd see Fred Astaire dance
- 38:51Speaker 15: and you think you could dance like that because you
- 38:53Speaker 15: made it look so effortlessly. And if the people don't know,
- 38:56Speaker 15: you know, the time Astaire put into dance, but also
- 38:59Speaker 15: what Frank into his craft, you know, he really worked
- 39:03Speaker 15: at it.
- 39:03Speaker 5: Yeah, it's incredible. Charles Pignon. Charlie, before we let you go,
- 39:07Speaker 5: walk us through, if you'd be so kind, Charlie, the
- 39:11Speaker 5: Copa room, 600 seats, band to the left, band to
- 39:14Speaker 5: the left was.
- 39:15Speaker 15: A, And for this one, yes, the band was to
- 39:19Speaker 15: the left. There's some great pictures in there of Frank
- 39:22Speaker 15: and he would walk around and and he would actually
- 39:26Speaker 15: with Marshall Royal on some of those things, he would
- 39:29Speaker 15: actually go up. right to the horn section and Larry
- 39:31Speaker 15: Walsh did a great job because Frank would put his mic,
- 39:34Speaker 15: even though Wally Heider had miked the band, Frank would
- 39:37Speaker 15: put his mic right near whoever was doing a solo.
- 39:41Speaker 15: And Bill Miller is back behind Basie in the back
- 39:46Speaker 15: of it because he, Frank wanted Bill to play some
- 39:49Speaker 15: fills because as Frank said, Basie would only use a
- 39:52Speaker 15: couple notes and do this and that. So like on,
- 39:55Speaker 15: on some of those songs, like a crush on you.
- 39:57Speaker 15: And we did bring up the piano a little so
- 39:59Speaker 15: you can hear, you can now hear a bill and
- 40:02Speaker 15: Basie and you can different styles of playing. And I
- 40:05Speaker 15: think it just sounds fantastic.
- 40:08Speaker 5: It is extraordinary, and I want to applaud you on
- 40:10Speaker 5: this because you get hooked on it as well, especially
- 40:13Speaker 5: if you go for a ride, Charlie. Like I was
- 40:15Speaker 5: in the car. I had to go see my daughter.
- 40:17Speaker 5: I was an hour in the car. Put this on.
- 40:20Speaker 5: It goes from one to the other. It's kind of
- 40:21Speaker 5: like watching when you binge watch something. You can't stop
- 40:24Speaker 5: listening to this. So walk us through. It's at FrankSinatra.com.
- 40:29Speaker 5: It's got the five CDs. He said, what was it
- 40:31Speaker 5: if I made Charles Pignon? What made you put it
- 40:33Speaker 5: in CD? That's making a big comeback, apparently, huh?
- 40:37Speaker 13: Oh, yeah.
- 40:37Speaker 15: Well, I always like to do physical, and we also...
- 40:40Speaker 15: Larry remixed the original album because we wanted to put
- 40:44Speaker 15: the original album. That's out on Vinylphile, and you can
- 40:46Speaker 15: go to the Sinatra site or probably get it quicker
- 40:49Speaker 15: from Amazon.com. But yeah, we put out the original album
- 40:53Speaker 15: as Sonny Burke cut it on LP Vinylphile, and I'm hoping...
- 40:57Speaker 15: that next year we've been asked by record store day
- 41:01Speaker 15: to pick one of the shows and maybe put out
- 41:04Speaker 15: a LP to LP set of one of these shows
- 41:07Speaker 15: that are on this album. I mean, universal is depending
- 41:10Speaker 15: on the cells because LPs are selling well, we might
- 41:13Speaker 15: put out a five LP set or it would be
- 41:16Speaker 15: 10 discs of mirror this, uh, what's on the CDs,
- 41:21Speaker 15: but CDs are just, I just love CDs and, you know, I.
- 41:26Speaker 5: You always say, yeah. I'm sorry.
- 41:29Speaker 15: I just love CDs. Go ahead.
- 41:31Speaker 5: You say, even the digital, the digital is great, but
- 41:33Speaker 5: you say on a CD, sometimes you can hear it
- 41:35Speaker 5: with more clarity than vinyl. I prefer the vinyl, but
- 41:38Speaker 5: you could hear it clear as day on the CD
- 41:41Speaker 5: or digital download, Charles, right?
- 41:43Speaker 15: Yeah, and I'll tell you why on this set I
- 41:45Speaker 15: prefer the CD. You don't break the mood because you
- 41:49Speaker 15: have to go internal. Now, if you're listening to Moonlight
- 41:51Speaker 15: Sinatra or one of the concepts albums, it's okay to
- 41:54Speaker 15: turn around, but here you can hear the whole– hour
- 41:58Speaker 15: show without getting up and taking a break so it's
- 42:00Speaker 15: like you're hearing the whole.
- 42:01Speaker 5: Thing charlie pinon i love you man and i'm sure

- 46:02Speaker 5: I love that version. Live at the Sands. That was
- 46:04Speaker 5: the first show in January 27th, 1966. I love the
- 46:09Speaker 5: baritone bass, the baritone saxophone, you know. That bass sound
- 46:13Speaker 5: that came up at the end of the song. Joe Piscopo,
- 46:16Speaker 5: Boulevard Sinatra Showcase. I always get inspired talking to Charles Pignol,
- 46:21Speaker 5: and we appreciate him putting up so much effort, getting
- 46:24Speaker 5: the tapes from the 1960s and making sure it sounds
- 46:27Speaker 5: good on CD, making sure it sounds good on vinyl.
- 46:31Speaker 5: And that's why we're grateful, you know, to Elias Rapp,
- 46:33Speaker 5: putting this together and making sure it sounds good to

- 49:35Speaker 5: John in Oklahoma. John, we love you listening in Oklahoma.
- 49:38Speaker 5: Thank you so much. And everybody, I know you're listening
- 49:41Speaker 5: down in Australia as well. We're streaming live, by the way.
- 49:44Speaker 5: You know, we broadcast out of the mothership. Thanks to Mr.
- 49:47Speaker 5: Katimatidis and Margo on WABC Radio out of New York,

- 50:03Speaker 5: take that for granted. We love you for listening, you know.
- 50:06Speaker 5: And if you're listening on a Sunday morning on the,

- 50:11Speaker 5: for listening then as well. Joe Piscopo, Bull of a
- 50:13Speaker 5: Sinatra Showcase, coming right.
- 50:17Speaker 4: Back.
- 50:27Speaker 2: The chairman of the board, Old Blue Eyes, the Sultan
- 50:30Speaker 2: of Swoon. Ladies and gentlemen, Frank Sinatra! This is Bulova's
- 50:36Speaker 2: Sinatra Showcase, with your host, Joe Piscopo, on Music Radio.
- 50:44Speaker 2: Music This is Bolivar's Sinatra Showcase.
- 51:02Speaker 3: I have discovered a young man whom I think is
- 51:04Speaker 3: going to be a superstar. He's got good stage presence,
- 51:07Speaker 3: great set of pipes.
- 51:09Speaker 4: He's Italian.
- 51:11Speaker 3: And he has a unique way with a phrase. But
- 51:13Speaker 3: more than that, there's just something I like about the guy.
- 51:16Speaker 3: You see what I think. You'll know what I think.
- 51:18Speaker 3: Here's my new discovery, Joe Piscopo.
- 51:23Speaker 5: Hey, Joe on the radio. It's full of a Sinatra showcase.
- 51:27Speaker 5: Live as live can be, baby. Love to have you
- 51:29Speaker 5: with us. And thanks to Mr. Charles Pignon for joining
- 51:32Speaker 5: us last hour. My goodness gracious, so much fun. And
- 51:35Speaker 5: Charlie was there when Frank Sinatra did that introduction. It
- 51:39Speaker 5: was 1986. It was solid gold. It was with Dionne Warwick.
- 51:43Speaker 5: And Mr. S asked me to be there. I've told
- 51:44Speaker 5: you this story many times. And there I was in makeup.
- 51:47Speaker 5: I was in makeup and Frank Sinatra makeup.
- 51:49Speaker 4: And he was right there.
- 51:50Speaker 5: And he gave me the most glorious introduction. And it
- 51:53Speaker 5: was really like a love affair. Ironically enough, a very
- 51:56Speaker 5: young Joe Piscopo was there. And a very young Charles
- 52:00Speaker 5: Pignon was right there with Mr. Sinatra. And we love that. Tina,
- 52:04Speaker 5: of course, Tina is the gatekeeper of everything. Mr. Sinatra
- 52:07Speaker 5: and Bob Finkelstein. But Charlie just puts these beautiful, beautiful
- 52:11Speaker 5: presentations together. So we're celebrating Sinatra at the Sands. Really
- 52:15Speaker 5: our favorite album. Everybody's favorite album, you know. But now
- 52:19Speaker 5: we grab different cuts from different shows. And this is
- 52:22Speaker 5: disc two that we're featuring tonight. And then I'm going
- 52:25Speaker 5: to take, I think in the second half hour, Ricky
- 52:27Speaker 5: doing a great job at the board. Thank you. Elias
- 52:29Speaker 5: Raff is with us. Ricky is with us. We appreciate
- 52:31Speaker 5: Chris Libertini helping to produce the show. We appreciate that.
- 52:34Speaker 5: I'm thinking second half hour. We play the tea break.
- 52:38Speaker 5: The tea break is almost 15 minutes. Should we do it?
- 52:40Speaker 5: Should we do it? Give us a call. Let us know.
- 52:42Speaker 5: Cause I may play that. It's really Frank Sinatra. It's
- 52:45Speaker 5: so early in the morning. Like Charlie said, it was
- 52:48Speaker 5: like the last four weeks, man. of the show, and
- 52:52Speaker 5: we may very well do that, you know, on Boulevard
- 52:54Speaker 5: Sinatra Showcase. 800-848-9222, 800-848-9222. Joe Piscopo, Boulevard Sinatra Showcase. Let's
- 53:02Speaker 5: kick it back in gear. Live at the Sands, Las Vegas, Nevada.
- 53:05Speaker 5: The first show at the Copa Room, January 27th, 1966.
- 53:08Speaker 5: You make me feel so young. I mean, 29, seriously.
- 53:20Speaker 8: You make me feel so young You make me feel
- 53:24Speaker 8: like spring has spun Every time I see you grin
- 53:30Speaker 8: I'm such a happy individual The moment that you speak
- 53:38Speaker 8: I want to run, play, hide and seek I want
- 53:42Speaker 8: to go and bounce to moon Just like a toy balloon.
- 53:50Speaker 4: You and I Just like a couple of tots.
- 53:57Speaker 8: Running around at home Picking up all those forget-me-nots You
- 54:08Speaker 8: make me feel there are songs to be sung Bells
- 54:12Speaker 8: to be rung and a wonderful fling to be flung.
- 54:17Speaker 4: And even when I'm old and.
- 54:19Speaker 8: Grey I'm gonna feel the way I do today Because
- 54:26Speaker 8: you make me feel so young You make me young
- 54:37Speaker 8: You make me think that spring has sprung Every time
- 54:43Speaker 8: I see you grin I'm such a cuckoo individual The
- 54:49Speaker 8: moment that you speak I like to run and play
- 54:54Speaker 8: hide and seek I'd like to go and bounce at
- 54:59Speaker 8: the moon just like a big balloon because you and
- 55:05Speaker 8: I we are just like a couple of tots who
- 55:11Speaker 8: are running around the meadow snatching up all those forget-me-nots
- 55:18Speaker 8: you You make me young You make me feel.
- 55:23Speaker 4: There are songs to be sung Lots of bells to
- 55:26Speaker 4: be rung And a wonderful fling to be.
- 55:29Speaker 6: Flung And even when I'm old and gray I'm gonna
- 55:36Speaker 6: feel the way I do today Because you make me.
- 55:42Speaker 18: Feel so Man, I just feel.
- 55:47Speaker 8: So You make me feel so young, so young.
- 56:04Speaker 5: Frank Sinatra at the Sands, Joe Piscopo featuring the 60th
- 56:08Speaker 5: anniversary of Sinatra at the Sands. Hey, we got Hoboken
- 56:12Speaker 5: Mary on the phone. We got, I'll tell you, she
- 56:15Speaker 5: is so always welcome to call anytime. Mary, were you
- 56:18Speaker 5: at the Knights of Columbus tonight, my dear?
- 56:21Speaker 13: Yes, it was really nice, Joe. It started at 6.30.
- 56:25Speaker 13: By 8.30, it was over and out. But anyway, all
- 56:29Speaker 13: we did, Joe, all we did was eat, and it
- 56:32Speaker 13: was very nice. And there was a lot of different
- 56:35Speaker 13: people there, so I didn't know too many. But I
- 56:38Speaker 13: had a table of 10. I did. I had a
- 56:40Speaker 13: table of 10, and everybody there was very, very nice.
- 56:44Speaker 13: We had about four priests hanging around. eating and uh
- 56:48Speaker 13: but it was very nice joe but as i said
- 56:51Speaker 13: and maybe another time you know what i mean.
- 56:53Speaker 5: Well you know what we didn't know what was was
- 56:56Speaker 5: it at the saint hands or was it another.
- 56:58Speaker 13: Parish no no saint francis my church uh they this
- 57:02Speaker 13: the knights of columbus did their october fest and my
- 57:05Speaker 13: priest said yes they could do that in my in
- 57:08Speaker 13: my center here It was the Knights of Columbus.
- 57:11Speaker 5: Well done. Because this is what we did. So I
- 57:14Speaker 5: said to Stacey, I said, you know, Mary's going to
- 57:16Speaker 5: be at the Knights of Columbus in Hoboken. I said,
- 57:18Speaker 5: what better way to celebrate the re-release of Sinatra at
- 57:22Speaker 5: the Sands than in Hoboken, New Jersey? So now, but
- 57:25Speaker 5: then I needed, I needed engineers and we needed to
- 57:27Speaker 5: play back. By time we would have got on the air.
- 57:30Speaker 5: Like now I think people would have been sleeping, Mary,
- 57:32Speaker 5: you know? Oh yeah, they.
- 57:33Speaker 13: Would have left three hours ago, Joe. Yeah, no, that wasn't.
- 57:38Speaker 13: But Joe, guess who? That's from Blue Eyes. He said, Mary,
- 57:43Speaker 13: Joe could come here anytime he wants.
- 57:46Speaker 4: You're on.
- 57:47Speaker 13: And you know who else said something? I want to
- 57:52Speaker 13: tell Stacey, but I haven't heard from her. The thing is,
- 57:55Speaker 13: even Reds in Karlstad, if you ever want to do
- 57:59Speaker 13: anything there, you're welcome, Joe. As I said, you know, Joe,
- 58:04Speaker 13: your name around Hoboken or around the neighborhood, you would
- 58:08Speaker 13: get unbelievable, you know? But anyway.
- 58:12Speaker 5: I got to mention Hoboken Mary. I'll get a freebie.
- 58:16Speaker 5: Maybe I'll get a free dinner. I'm just saying. Come
- 58:18Speaker 5: on now.
- 58:19Speaker 4: Mary, wait, wait, wait.
- 58:20Speaker 5: While we have you, hold on. Mary, so did you
- 58:23Speaker 5: play Reds already? You played Red, right?
- 58:25Speaker 13: Oh, I played there four times already, Joe.
- 58:28Speaker 5: Oh, well, excuse me. Look at you.
- 58:30Speaker 4: Look at you.
- 58:32Speaker 13: But, Joe, what happened when I started there, I was
- 58:36Speaker 13: in competition. So, you know, I had to keep winning
- 58:39Speaker 13: and winning and winning. Finally, I won. Like, you know
- 58:42Speaker 13: what I mean?
- 58:42Speaker 5: Yeah, girl, you're doing so good.
- 58:45Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 58:45Speaker 5: And then you're going to open for Sal Valentinetti at
- 58:48Speaker 5: the Basie Theater. You got to let us know when
- 58:50Speaker 5: you do that. I was just at the Basie last
- 58:52Speaker 5: week with Brian Kilmeade. What a beautiful theater. Great. And
- 58:56Speaker 5: you love the guys backstage. It was great. And you're
- 58:59Speaker 5: doing that in November, you said?
- 59:01Speaker 13: November 29th, but Joe, it's next door to the Basie Theater.
- 59:05Speaker 13: It's called the Vogel, V-O-G-E-L.
- 59:07Speaker 5: Oh, I love that place. It's a little small. no
- 59:11Speaker 5: it's perfect it's perfect it's beautiful yeah it's the hip
- 59:14Speaker 5: it's the Vogel everybody's playing the Vogel now that is
- 59:17Speaker 5: that's going to be so great Mary we love you
- 59:19Speaker 5: and I love that you support the community like I
- 59:21Speaker 5: went I stopped at uh my my friend's church St.
- 59:24Speaker 5: Bridget and PPAC Gladstone with Father John there before the
- 59:27Speaker 5: show And then I stopped, and I saw those nice
- 59:30Speaker 5: people there, man. And it's like you with the Knights
- 59:32Speaker 5: of Columbus tonight. And I tell you, just good people
- 59:35Speaker 5: like yourself that really make this country a great place
- 59:37Speaker 5: to be. So we appreciate all that you do, Mary,
- 59:40Speaker 5: you know? And we send our love to you.
- 59:42Speaker 13: Thank you, John. And boy, oh boy, John, Joe, I
- 59:45Speaker 13: called Winnie's. I said, is Joe Piscopo going to be
- 59:48Speaker 13: there tomorrow night? Because, Joe, I would have came to Winnie's,
- 59:51Speaker 13: believe me. But you know what they said? We're so
- 59:54Speaker 13: booked up. He won't be here this weekend. So, you know,
- 1:00:00Speaker 13: my son said he made a joke. He goes, he
- 1:00:03Speaker 13: could come up to your apartment.
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: You're all alone.
- 1:00:07Speaker 5: We'll bring the bed. We'll bring the bed. Mary, we
- 1:00:10Speaker 5: love you. Go ahead.
- 1:00:12Speaker 13: All right, Jay. Stay well.
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: You take care of yourself. Hoboken Mary, the one and only,
- 1:00:18Speaker 5: the best. And we will be back at Winnie's. And
- 1:00:20Speaker 5: then we're going to bring George Robinson in, in January.
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: The tentative date is January. I think the end of January,
- 1:00:27Speaker 5: George Robinson is from England. He's going to make his
- 1:00:29Speaker 5: American debut at Winnie's. This kid is 16 years old.
- 1:00:33Speaker 5: He sounds exactly whoever he wants to sound like. Frank Sinatra.
- 1:00:37Speaker 5: He does beautiful Frank Sinatra music.
- 1:00:39Speaker 9: 16!
- 1:00:40Speaker 5: English kid. Just a nice kid. A very, very nice
- 1:00:42Speaker 5: young man. And then he's got Dean Martin. And you
- 1:00:45Speaker 5: know what? Tony Bennett. And he knows all the standards.
- 1:00:47Speaker 5: And he's going to keep them alive. And we'll let
- 1:00:49Speaker 5: you know all about that as we get closer. Hey,
- 1:00:51Speaker 5: we got time. We got time.
- 1:00:52Speaker 7: All right.
- 1:00:53Speaker 5: Ricky's at the board, baby. Let's go back to the sands. 1966. Oh,
- 1:00:59Speaker 5: I was a little baby. Hey, this is Frank Sinatra
- 1:01:01Speaker 5: ripping it up with luck. Be a lady.
- 1:01:12Speaker 8: They call you Lady Luck, but there is room for doubt.
- 1:01:21Speaker 8: At times you have a very unladylike way of running out.
- 1:01:30Speaker 8: You're on this date with me. The pickings have been lush.
- 1:01:39Speaker 8: And yet before this evening is over, you might give
- 1:01:44Speaker 8: me the brush.
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: You might forget your manners. You might refuse to stay.
- 1:01:53Speaker 8: And so the best that I can do is pray.
- 1:02:10Speaker 8: Luck be a lady tonight Luck be a lady tonight
- 1:02:20Speaker 8: Luck if you've ever been a lady.
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: To begin with Luck be a lady tonight.
- 1:02:33Speaker 8: Luck, let a gentleman see Just how nice A dame.
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: You can be.
- 1:02:43Speaker 8: I know the way you've treated Other guys you've been
- 1:02:47Speaker 8: with How about you being.
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: A lady with me?
- 1:02:55Speaker 8: A lady doesn't leave her escort.
- 1:03:00Speaker 4: It isn't fair And it's not nice.
- 1:03:06Speaker 8: A lady doesn't wander All over the room And then
- 1:03:11Speaker 8: blow on another guy's dice How about we keep this
- 1:03:18Speaker 8: party polite Never move out of my sight Stick with me,
- 1:03:28Speaker 8: baby I'm the guy that you came in with.
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: Hey, let's be a.

- 1:04:02Speaker 8: nice a pretty dame you can be I know the
- 1:04:09Speaker 8: way you treat it Other guys you've been with How

- 1:04:25Speaker 4: Fair And it's not nice A lady doesn't.
- 1:04:32Speaker 8: Wander All over the room And then blow on another

- 1:05:02Speaker 4: a lady tonight.
- 1:05:03Speaker 7: Tonight.
- 1:05:05Speaker 4: 11.
- 1:05:24Speaker 5: Frank Sinatra, we're just celebrating the 60th anniversary of the
- 1:05:28Speaker 5: Sands album. It's something that I guess you can get
- 1:05:32Speaker 5: on Amazon, like Charlie Pignon said, and you can go
- 1:05:35Speaker 5: to FrankSinatra.com, but you want to see it. There's a
- 1:05:37Speaker 5: litany and a plethora of information. Cousin Paulie, thank you
- 1:05:40Speaker 5: for listening. My cousin Paulie listened, and God bless him.
- 1:05:43Speaker 5: One of the great guys on the planet, you know,
- 1:05:45Speaker 5: making us proud. You know what I got to do
- 1:05:47Speaker 5: before we're going to break in a second, but I
- 1:05:49Speaker 5: want you to listen to When you think about the
- 1:05:50Speaker 5: Basie band, don't forget at the Sands, 1966, when Mr.
- 1:05:54Speaker 5: S went there and he had this beautiful synergy with
- 1:05:58Speaker 5: Count Basie and the orchestra. I don't know that there
- 1:06:00Speaker 5: was a band better than that since or before. I'm
- 1:06:04Speaker 5: telling you. Listen to the synergy of this song. After Mr. S,
- 1:06:08Speaker 5: he would step away for a second and they would
- 1:06:10Speaker 5: go into One O'Clock Jump. Ricky, give me One O'Clock
- 1:06:12Speaker 5: Jump if you will. One O'Clock Jump. That is probably
- 1:07:07Speaker 5: the greatest big band ever. And you know me. I
- 1:07:09Speaker 5: love Krupa. I love Benny Goodman. I know Glenn Miller,
- 1:07:12Speaker 5: Tommy Dorsey, the greatest big band. And to this day,
- 1:07:16Speaker 5: I've never heard anything like it. I'm telling you what,
- 1:07:17Speaker 5: it was a synergy and the genius of the Count
- 1:07:20Speaker 5: Basie Orchestra under the direction of Quincy Jones. Just incredible.
- 1:07:25Speaker 5: I'll tell you what, we're going to take a little
- 1:07:26Speaker 5: bit of break and then we're going to come back.
- 1:07:27Speaker 5: We're going to go back to Vegas. 1966, I was
- 1:07:30Speaker 5: a baby! But oh man, Frank Sinatra was swinging on stage.
- 1:07:36Speaker 5: And we're going to celebrate it right here on both
- 1:07:38Speaker 5: of us, Sinatra's Showcase with Piscopo, live on the radio.
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: This is Bolivar's Sinatra Showcase. This is Bolivar's Sinatra Showcase
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: with your host, Joe Piscopo on Music Radio. Music This
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: is Bolivar's Sinatra Showcase with your host, Joe Piscopo, on
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: music radio. Here's an awfully pretty folk song.
- 1:08:39Speaker 9: When I.
- 1:08:42Speaker 4: Was 17 It was a very good year It was
- 1:08:43Speaker 4: a very good year.
- 1:08:53Speaker 8: It was a very good year It was a very
- 1:08:59Speaker 8: good year For small town girls And soft summer nights
- 1:09:08Speaker 8: We'd hide from the lights.
- 1:09:13Speaker 4: Under the village green.
- 1:09:17Speaker 8: When I was 17.
- 1:09:24Speaker 7: When I was 21 It was a very good year
- 1:09:26Speaker 7: It was a very good year For city girls Who
- 1:09:29Speaker 7: lived up.
- 1:09:29Speaker 6: The stairs With.
- 1:09:32Speaker 17: All that.
- 1:09:53Speaker 4: Her fumed hair.
- 1:09:57Speaker 8: And it came undone when I was 21. Then I
- 1:10:23Speaker 8: was 35 It.
- 1:10:28Speaker 12: Was a very.
- 1:10:30Speaker 4: Good year It.
- 1:10:33Speaker 8: Was a very good year For blue-blooded girls Of independent
- 1:10:40Speaker 8: means We'd ride in limousines Their chauffeurs would drive When
- 1:10:54Speaker 8: I was thirty-five.
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: But now the days grow short I'm in the autumn
- 1:11:21Speaker 4: of the year.
- 1:11:25Speaker 8: And now I think of my life As vintage wine
- 1:11:32Speaker 8: from fine old kegs From the brim to the drakes.
- 1:11:43Speaker 4: And it pours sweet and clear.
- 1:11:49Speaker 12: It was a very good year.
- 1:12:08Speaker 4: It was a mess of good years.
- 1:12:27Speaker 5: Frank Sinatra, Urban Drake wrote that song and Mr. Sinatra,
- 1:12:31Speaker 5: of course, that was a folk song. You know the story.
- 1:12:34Speaker 5: And he said, I love this. And he did it
- 1:12:35Speaker 5: and he owned it. And he's recording this. You know,
- 1:12:38Speaker 5: he's doing his first show back in January 66, man,
- 1:12:41Speaker 5: doing two shows a night. You could hear it in
- 1:12:43Speaker 5: his voice. I love it. I love it when you
- 1:12:44Speaker 5: could hear the Vegas and Frank Sinatra's voice. You know what?
- 1:12:47Speaker 5: Let's go. Let's go back swinging. And then, yeah, listen,
- 1:12:50Speaker 5: we got time before we break. This is a swinging,
- 1:12:53Speaker 5: swinging song that Mr. Sinatra totally nails. And don't forget,
- 1:12:56Speaker 5: two shows a night. He just ran the whole month
- 1:12:58Speaker 5: with two shows a night. God bless him. Frank Sinatra, Vegas, 1966, baby.
- 1:13:04Speaker 5: My kind of town.
- 1:13:12Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 1:13:13Speaker 6: Very kind.
- 1:13:15Speaker 8: Now this could only happen to a guy like me.
- 1:13:22Speaker 4: And only happen in a town like.
- 1:13:25Speaker 8: This And so I say to each of you most
- 1:13:32Speaker 8: gratefully As I throw each one of you a kiss
- 1:13:41Speaker 8: This is my kind of town Chicago is My kind
- 1:13:53Speaker 8: of town Chicago is My kind of.
- 1:13:59Speaker 4: People too.
- 1:14:02Speaker 8: People who smile at you And each time I roam
- 1:14:11Speaker 8: Chicago is It's calling me home Chicago is It makes
- 1:14:21Speaker 8: me grin like a clown It's my, my kind of
- 1:14:27Speaker 8: town This.
- 1:14:30Speaker 19: Here is my kind of town.
- 1:14:44Speaker 8: My kind of town Chicago is.
- 1:14:51Speaker 4: My kind of razzmatazz And it has.
- 1:14:59Speaker 18: All that jazz And each time I leave Chicago is
- 1:15:07Speaker 18: It's grabbing my sleeve Chicago.
- 1:15:11Speaker 20: Is The Wrigley Building Chicago is The Jumpin' Pump Room,
- 1:15:21Speaker 20: Chicago is.
- 1:15:24Speaker 8: One town that won't let you down.
- 1:15:28Speaker 4: It's my kind.
- 1:15:33Speaker 7: Of town.
- 1:15:36Speaker 18: Chicago, Chicago, Chicago, my kind of town.
- 1:15:45Speaker 9: Chicago.
- 1:16:01Speaker 5: Hey, celebrating the Sands. Thank you, Ricky.
- 1:16:04Speaker 9: Beautiful, baby. You know what?
- 1:16:05Speaker 5: I got to tell you something. This was, as my
- 1:16:08Speaker 5: buddy Bill in Philly just said, our favorite album's got
- 1:16:11Speaker 5: to be this.
- 1:16:11Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:16:12Speaker 5: The main event. The main event, you know, with Howard
- 1:16:14Speaker 5: Cosell doing that intro. Was that a great album? Come on. Also,
- 1:16:17Speaker 5: a lot of people like some of the, you know,
- 1:16:20Speaker 5: We Small Hours, you know, some of the concept albums.
- 1:16:23Speaker 5: But this album at the Sands, we always are drawn
- 1:16:25Speaker 5: back to. So we applaud Charles Pignon and Sinatra Enterprises
- 1:16:30Speaker 5: with Tina... putting this out because it is just a joy,
- 1:16:34Speaker 5: absolute joy to listen to. And we're going to get
- 1:16:37Speaker 5: back to it now. I think what we're going to
- 1:16:39Speaker 5: do when we come back, we're going to play Tea Break.
- 1:16:41Speaker 5: And it's a different Tea Break that you have not
- 1:16:44Speaker 5: heard before. that Mr. Pignon had found on tapes from
- 1:16:48Speaker 5: the Sands back in the 60s. Oh, baby, it's Boulevard
- 1:16:52Speaker 5: Sinatra Showcase with Joe Piscopo, in my glory. By the way,
- 1:16:55Speaker 5: we're live as live can be, and we love having
- 1:16:58Speaker 5: you with us. And you know what? Stay tuned, because
- 1:16:59Speaker 5: we're coming right back with more from the Sands on
- 1:17:01Speaker 5: Boulevard Sinatra Showcase.
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: This is Bolivar's Sinatra Showcase on Music Radio. Music The
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: chairman of the board, Old Blue Eyes, the Sultan of Swoon.
- 1:17:40Speaker 16: Ladies and gentlemen, Greg Sinatra!
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: This is Bulova's Sinatra Showcase, with your host, Joe Piscopo,
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: on Music Radio. Hey, Joe on the radio, Bulova Sinatra Showcase,
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: celebrating the re-release, the 60th anniversary, 60 years, of Sinatra
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: at the Sands with Count Basie and the orchestra. It
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: came out, actually yesterday it came out, and now it's out,
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: and you're going to be able to get it at Amazon,
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: and you can download it. And I listened to all,
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: there's like four plus hours of Frank Sinatra. To me,
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: you can't get enough. It's like, I always say, it's
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: like binge watching something. You know, if you watch something
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: on Netflix or something, this is what you're going to
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: feel when you listen to Sinatra at the Sands. It's
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: quite extraordinary. But now, you heard Charles Pignon on the show.
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: Each tea break that he called the tea break, and
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: he would come out with tea, Mr. S would, and
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: he would have the tea with the, you know, and
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: he would sip the tea. It wasn't booze.
- 1:18:41Speaker 5: And he would do a little riff, a little. And
- 1:18:43Speaker 5: you know that from the original Sands album. You know
- 1:18:47Speaker 5: the tea break. Each one on these is outstanding. absolutely different.
- 1:18:51Speaker 5: So if you would, with your kind permission, Boulevard Sinatra
- 1:18:55Speaker 5: Showcase with Joe Piscopo, sit back, relax, all right? And
- 1:19:00Speaker 5: we want you to enjoy the monologue live from the Sands.
- 1:19:04Speaker 5: This is from the show January 1966, The Tea Break
- 1:19:09Speaker 5: with Francis Albert.
- 1:19:12Speaker 4: Nothing to it, folks. Good evening. Salud. Chin down.
- 1:19:25Speaker 8: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to Jilly's West. Where
- 1:19:34Speaker 8: do you eat meat to eat? And if I rhyme that,
- 1:19:37Speaker 8: this will be a barn in the morning. I hope
- 1:19:42Speaker 8: that you're having an enjoyable stay here in Las Vegas,
- 1:19:45Speaker 8: and I understand and also hope that you have been fortunate.
- 1:19:50Speaker 4: I do hope you that constantly. Wish that for you.
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: I can't say the same for Mr.
- 1:19:54Speaker 8: Basie and myself, because we run into a streak of
- 1:19:59Speaker 8: bad luck.
- 1:20:02Speaker 4: Sunday, we went up to the Grand Canyon and it
- 1:20:04Speaker 4: was closed.
- 1:20:13Speaker 8: And last year, we invested a bundle of money in
- 1:20:18Speaker 8: a pumpkin farm and then they called off Halloween.
- 1:20:25Speaker 4: And when I told that to Sapphire, she said, you're.
- 1:20:28Speaker 8: Going around with that bum again.
- 1:20:30Speaker 4: That's what's the matter with.
- 1:20:36Speaker 9: You.
- 1:20:36Speaker 5: Ooh.
- 1:20:41Speaker 8: Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to explain or at
- 1:20:45Speaker 8: least beg your forgiveness for any inconveniences about the hotel
- 1:20:48Speaker 8: if you're staying here because of the rebuilding that's going on.
- 1:20:51Speaker 8: Some of the corridors are not complete and they've been
- 1:20:53Speaker 8: a little... pipes leaking here and there, but that's the
- 1:20:56Speaker 8: way it goes when you rebuild, and every hotel has
- 1:20:58Speaker 8: had to do that. Consequently, we joined the group, and
- 1:21:02Speaker 8: we built... How about that round thing out there? Not
- 1:21:05Speaker 8: Jack and Trotter, the building I'm talking about. And that's
- 1:21:08Speaker 8: just the scaffold you see out there. Wait till you
- 1:21:10Speaker 8: see when it's finished.
- 1:21:11Speaker 4: It'll be the worst piece of architecture you've ever seen.
- 1:21:17Speaker 8: It's very expensive, obviously, you know, to build today. Per
- 1:21:20Speaker 8: square foot, it's like 25 bucks or 30 bucks per
- 1:21:22Speaker 8: square foot.
- 1:21:23Speaker 4: Consequently, this whole.
- 1:21:25Speaker 8: A changeover we had was about $ 11, $ 12 million. We
- 1:21:28Speaker 8: got $ 3 million from the local bank and $ 8 million
- 1:21:30Speaker 8: from the cocktail waitresses who work around outside.
- 1:21:37Speaker 4: Oh, don't joke.
- 1:21:37Speaker 8: One of these kids is named Shearson Hamill. That's a
- 1:21:42Speaker 8: brokerage house, Smitty. You know, stocks and bonds, a lot
- 1:21:46Speaker 8: of money. From North Nevada, right?
- 1:21:48Speaker 4: Make you feel at home. Moo!
- 1:21:51Speaker 13: Bah!
- 1:21:52Speaker 4: All right, everybody stand up. I want to see many
- 1:21:54Speaker 4: pairs of brown shoes in the house.
- 1:22:04Speaker 8: Now, they get back to the building, and at the moment,
- 1:22:10Speaker 8: there ain't no place else to go. They've developed, I understand,
- 1:22:16Speaker 8: some marvelous decor in the suites up there, and now
- 1:22:19Speaker 8: Jack tells me they're going to have plaques put on
- 1:22:21Speaker 8: some of the doors. For instance, the Danny Thomas suite,
- 1:22:23Speaker 8: just to kind of glamorize a little bit, red skelter suite.
- 1:22:26Speaker 4: And the one for Dean, he decorated himself. It's just
- 1:22:28Speaker 4: gutter to gutter. There's no furniture. Just straight across the room.
- 1:22:31Speaker 4: He likes it that way, folks. You see, Mr. Martin
- 1:22:34Speaker 4: falls in the street a lot.
- 1:22:38Speaker 8: You'll notice that because, I mean, you'll know that he
- 1:22:41Speaker 8: does that because he doesn't wear cufflinks like we do.
- 1:22:42Speaker 8: He has curb feelers on his shirt so that he
- 1:22:46Speaker 8: won't hit his head when he goes to the street.
- 1:22:48Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:22:52Speaker 8: You know, the people ask me, you're not too sure,
- 1:22:55Speaker 8: so don't get mixed up in it. People, the question
- 1:23:00Speaker 8: most asked of me is, does Dean Martin really drink?
- 1:23:03Speaker 4: Well, I can attest to that fact. He's a drunk.
- 1:23:07Speaker 4: He is an absolutely unqualified drunk.
- 1:23:12Speaker 8: And if we ever develop an Olympic drinking team, he's
- 1:23:15Speaker 8: going to be the coach. With Tootshaw and Jackie Gleason
- 1:23:20Speaker 8: involved and me bringing up the rear end. I would say, roughly,
- 1:23:25Speaker 8: that Dean Martin has been stoned more often than the
- 1:23:27Speaker 8: United States embassies. I'm not too sure whether you applauded
- 1:23:39Speaker 8: for Dean or if we should stone some more embassies.
- 1:23:41Speaker 4: I don't know about this group here, you know. I say,
- 1:23:45Speaker 4: once you've seen one, you've seen them all, you know.
- 1:23:46Speaker 4: You never know about that.
- 1:23:48Speaker 8: And.
- 1:23:53Speaker 4: Oh, I've got to find my key and use my room.
- 1:23:55Speaker 4: This is terrible.
- 1:23:56Speaker 8: I think I swallowed a shot glass. So dark in
- 1:24:01Speaker 8: the Regency room, I never know what the hell I
- 1:24:02Speaker 8: was eating or.
- 1:24:03Speaker 4: Drinking in there.
- 1:24:07Speaker 8: And let me see about Dean. Oh, yes, I would
- 1:24:09Speaker 8: like to continue about him. I'll tell you one thing
- 1:24:11Speaker 8: about Dean Martin. When you go to his home in
- 1:24:13Speaker 8: Beverly Hills for an evening's fun, he holds real steadfast
- 1:24:17Speaker 8: to one rule.
- 1:24:18Speaker 4: There's no drinking after dinner.
- 1:24:19Speaker 8: Of course, you don't eat until 3.30 a.m., but there's
- 1:24:22Speaker 8: no drinking after dinner. How the hell can you drink
- 1:24:26Speaker 8: when you're laying flat on your back in the gym,
- 1:24:28Speaker 8: you know? Then his mother-in-law Peggy picks you up and
- 1:24:31Speaker 8: rolls you into the dining room. They also have a
- 1:24:33Speaker 8: big dog who does that. And Dean is very, very
- 1:24:39Speaker 8: wonderful about his family, particularly, let's say, you know, everybody
- 1:24:42Speaker 8: makes jokes about their mother-in-law. Not Dean, he loves Peggy.
- 1:24:44Speaker 8: He gave her for Christmas a two-story, six-bedroom house. But
- 1:24:47Speaker 8: the sheriff keeps closing it down every Saturday. He walks
- 1:24:51Speaker 8: up and closes it down. This guy just ain't broad-minded,
- 1:24:55Speaker 8: that's all. And I picked the cast myself. Belle Barthes,
- 1:25:05Speaker 8: Sophie Tucker, all those good-looking broads. Some of the world's
- 1:25:09Speaker 8: great baritones we got in there. You know, the dean
- 1:25:15Speaker 8: also for Christmas bought his wife Jeannie a Jaguar and
- 1:25:17Speaker 8: it ate her.
- 1:25:23Speaker 4: You see, folks, I'd like to explain something to you
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: right now. See all these microphones? We're taping this.
- 1:25:31Speaker 8: It's going to be an album. See, you're going to
- 1:25:32Speaker 8: buy this in a few months and hear yourself laughing.
- 1:25:35Speaker 4: But I'm betting $ 6, 000.
- 1:25:36Speaker 8: To $ 1 that they don't use all this stuff. When
- 1:25:42Speaker 8: we finish the first phase of the year, which is
- 1:25:44Speaker 8: damn near complete now, the second phase is redoing this
- 1:25:47Speaker 8: Copa room here.
- 1:25:48Speaker 4: Larger stage, more capacity. And Mr.
- 1:25:50Speaker 8: And Trotter, to show you the class of the thinking
- 1:25:52Speaker 8: of this hotel, they're closing Golden Boy in May to
- 1:25:55Speaker 8: bring Sammy Davis in here for four solid weeks just
- 1:25:58Speaker 8: to clean. I saw Sammy's first television show. I'd like
- 1:26:10Speaker 8: to make one comment on that show. There's a lot
- 1:26:14Speaker 8: I can make, but I want to make one comment
- 1:26:16Speaker 8: on this show. If Elizabeth Taylor keeps making TV appearances
- 1:26:21Speaker 8: in that manner, I'm gonna have to get a bigger
- 1:26:23Speaker 8: screen in my house. You know, she's liable to bring
- 1:26:33Speaker 8: back mothers one of these days, I'll tell you that.
- 1:26:38Speaker 8: Seems I gotta get my kids some balloons, that reminds me.
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: She ain't never gonna drown, baby. Ain't no way.
- 1:26:54Speaker 8: Sammy Davis wrote a book called Yes I Can and
- 1:26:57Speaker 8: when I saw that show I sent him a wire
- 1:26:58Speaker 8: and said no you can't.
- 1:27:07Speaker 4: Now I guess that you folks have heard or read
- 1:27:10Speaker 4: or been told somewhere in your daily life that.
- 1:27:13Speaker 8: Recently I became 50 years old and I'm here to
- 1:27:16Speaker 8: tell you right now it's a dirty communist lie.
- 1:27:20Speaker 4: Direct from Hanoi it came right out of there My
- 1:27:24Speaker 4: body may be 50, but I'm 28. And I.
- 1:27:35Speaker 8: Would further like to say that I'd be 22 if
- 1:27:37Speaker 8: I hadn't spent all those years drinking with Joey Lewis,
- 1:27:40Speaker 8: who nearly wrecked me. Remember the words of Joey Lewis
- 1:27:44Speaker 8: who said, a friend in need is a pest. And
- 1:27:50Speaker 8: you think about that when you go to bed and
- 1:27:52Speaker 8: they break you up later on. And if you do
- 1:27:56Speaker 8: think about that when you go to bed, you shouldn't
- 1:27:57Speaker 8: be allowed to go to bed.
- 1:28:04Speaker 4: However, folk, I'm a Sagittarian.
- 1:28:09Speaker 8: I was born on December 12, 1915, and I was
- 1:28:12Speaker 8: born a very skinny kid. Little kid, skinny. So skinny,
- 1:28:17Speaker 8: my eyes were single file. Between those two and my
- 1:28:21Speaker 8: belly button, my old man thought I was a clarinet.
- 1:28:25Speaker 8: You see Charlie McLaren that you put your finger on
- 1:28:28Speaker 8: the holes like this, you see.
- 1:28:30Speaker 13: Oh, geez.
- 1:28:30Speaker 4: Where'd you come from? The Yellow Pages or Cesar Roebuck?
- 1:28:39Speaker 8: And I was born in a tenement house in Hoboken,
- 1:28:42Speaker 8: New Jersey, and it was a walk-up, eight floors. And
- 1:28:45Speaker 8: it was one of those places, no, they're going to
- 1:28:47Speaker 8: have elevators in 1915. Otis wasn't even born yet, I think,
- 1:28:50Speaker 8: when I had this house. And we never knew whether
- 1:28:54Speaker 8: we were going to have any lights, any food. Any
- 1:28:56Speaker 8: heat of any type? Mice running around?
- 1:28:58Speaker 4: Funny part of it is my folks were very wealthy.
- 1:29:00Speaker 4: They just hated me, that's all. They gave me the
- 1:29:03Speaker 4: loyalty test immediately.
- 1:29:06Speaker 8: And eventually I managed to fight my way through the
- 1:29:09Speaker 8: qualms and traumas of life, and I got to grow
- 1:29:11Speaker 8: up to be 16 or so. And I was about
- 1:29:14Speaker 8: ready to get out of high school about a few
- 1:29:16Speaker 8: months before. My father was called into the school by
- 1:29:18Speaker 8: the principal for about the 700th time. And he said
- 1:29:22Speaker 8: to my dad, here's the diploma, get him out. That's
- 1:29:27Speaker 8: what he do say.
- 1:29:29Speaker 4: Get him out.
- 1:29:31Speaker 8: I must explain to you that when we walked out
- 1:29:33Speaker 8: and stood on the steps of the high school, my
- 1:29:35Speaker 8: father said to me, and I must first mention the
- 1:29:38Speaker 8: fact that my father is a Rutger graduate and he
- 1:29:41Speaker 8: majored in English.
- 1:29:42Speaker 4: And he said to me, what the hell is the
- 1:29:45Speaker 4: matter with you? What's the matter? You don't want to
- 1:29:48Speaker 4: learn nothing?
- 1:29:51Speaker 8: He was great with English. He spoke beautifully. He also
- 1:29:54Speaker 8: had an ear like this, a chungam ear. That was
- 1:29:58Speaker 8: my mother who gave him that from yelling at him
- 1:30:00Speaker 8: all the time. So he said to me, he knew
- 1:30:05Speaker 8: I wanted to get in show business, and he gave
- 1:30:07Speaker 8: me the alternative, as all parents did in those days.
- 1:30:09Speaker 8: You want to be a bum in show business, you
- 1:30:10Speaker 8: want to get a real job. So I figured, well,
- 1:30:12Speaker 8: what the heck, he's my dad, I love him, and
- 1:30:14Speaker 8: I'll go along with his ideas. So he got me
- 1:30:16Speaker 8: a job. You know what a thrill it is to
- 1:30:18Speaker 8: get a hernia for $ 62. 50 a week, lifting crates of
- 1:30:21Speaker 8: 600 pounds with another little guy smaller than me with
- 1:30:24Speaker 8: a hand truck?
- 1:30:26Speaker 4: Well, he got me another job in a shipyard. Todd's Shipyards.
- 1:30:30Speaker 4: You ever hear that, Joy? I worked there.
- 1:30:33Speaker 8: And I was a rivet catcher in the hold of
- 1:30:35Speaker 8: a ship. But the guy throwing them was a real jigad.
- 1:30:38Speaker 8: He was a cockeyed like this. He couldn't hit a
- 1:30:45Speaker 8: bull in a fanny with a bag of rice, this Benny.
- 1:30:49Speaker 4: And I cleaned that up. Yeah, corn cob!
- 1:30:58Speaker 8: But no sense in trying to explain it. It hurried
- 1:31:01Speaker 8: my career into show business. I quit right away. Gave
- 1:31:04Speaker 8: in my union button with the pea cap and the
- 1:31:06Speaker 8: leather jacket, and I walked out right away.
- 1:31:08Speaker 4: That's exactly what I had.
- 1:31:11Speaker 8: And I packed my little straw case and went to
- 1:31:13Speaker 8: New York, and that was it. I even bummed a
- 1:31:15Speaker 8: ride on a ferry.
- 1:31:17Speaker 5: And, uh.
- 1:31:22Speaker 4: You're not listening too well, folks.
- 1:31:27Speaker 8: Would you like me to make some remarks about my
- 1:31:29Speaker 8: Mary Janes with the bows on them?
- 1:31:30Speaker 4: Aren't they sweet? Patent leather with the bows.
- 1:31:34Speaker 8: Before I wore these, I went out and took eight
- 1:31:35Speaker 8: weeks of karate lessons. I didn't take no chances, you know.
- 1:31:41Speaker 8: I even took a postgraduate course in judo. Anyway, I
- 1:31:45Speaker 8: got together a quartet, see, and we were called the
- 1:31:49Speaker 8: Hoboken Four, and in those days there was a very
- 1:31:51Speaker 8: big radio program on called Major Bows, Major Edward Bows.
- 1:31:54Speaker 8: Now Ted Mack today on television is a spinoff of
- 1:31:57Speaker 8: the original radio show because he used to work for
- 1:31:59Speaker 8: Bose and Bose used to come on the air and
- 1:32:01Speaker 8: he'd say the wheel of fortune spins round and round
- 1:32:05Speaker 8: she goes where she stops nobody knows that was the
- 1:32:08Speaker 8: dullest god.
- 1:32:09Speaker 4: Damn opening I ever heard on any radio show wait
- 1:32:11Speaker 4: a minute now.
- 1:32:16Speaker 8: He was a pompous bum with a bulbous nose he
- 1:32:18Speaker 8: used to drink Green River he was a big drunk
- 1:32:20Speaker 8: this time.
- 1:32:22Speaker 4: I don't know if you ever heard of Green River
- 1:32:24Speaker 4: but it takes the paint over your deck if you
- 1:32:25Speaker 4: got a boat 59 cents a gallon, baby.
- 1:32:34Speaker 8: Three shots of that and they gave you the dog
- 1:32:36Speaker 8: and the cane. You played games with Shearing and Hibbler
- 1:32:41Speaker 8: and the rest of those guys. Anyway, we were a
- 1:32:51Speaker 8: big hit on the show, the Hoboken Four, and he
- 1:32:52Speaker 8: kept bringing us back, but he had to change the name, obviously,
- 1:32:55Speaker 8: because it was a legitimate amateur show, except it wasn't.
- 1:32:58Speaker 8: So he brought us back as the Newark Nightingales, the
- 1:33:00Speaker 8: Teaneck Teen Tones, the Secaucus Cockamamies. Touching name, isn't it?
- 1:33:07Speaker 8: The Bayonne Bacalaz was the one that killed me. I'm
- 1:33:16Speaker 8: drinking tea and honey, pal. That's what I'm supposed to.
- 1:33:18Speaker 8: I'm on a diet of this stuff. I quit drinking,
- 1:33:21Speaker 8: but I think it's over. Because it ain't helped me
- 1:33:24Speaker 8: at all. I've been climbing walls since three weeks ago.
- 1:33:27Speaker 8: And on top of that, I stopped smoking with the
- 1:33:29Speaker 8: same thing. I must be nuts or something. Listen, I'll
- 1:33:33Speaker 8: hold it up till you get back if you want, buddy.
- 1:33:34Speaker 8: I'll just, I'll kind of linger a little bit. The
- 1:33:40Speaker 8: way you're walking, eight to five, you don't get there
- 1:33:42Speaker 8: in time. He's walking sideways like this.
- 1:33:49Speaker 5: That's Frank Sinatra. You know what? And that is really
- 1:33:52Speaker 5: from one of the early shows. And you heard a
- 1:33:55Speaker 5: lot of that from the album. It's full of a
- 1:33:57Speaker 5: Sinatra showcase and I wanted to do the tea break,
- 1:33:59Speaker 5: you know, but I got to tell you, that was
- 1:34:01Speaker 5: from when Charlie Pignon added some things on. And there's
- 1:34:05Speaker 5: some other things that are really kind of fun and
- 1:34:09Speaker 5: that we'll get to in ensuing weeks from Sinatra and Sands.
- 1:34:12Speaker 5: But we've got to take a break right now. When
- 1:34:14Speaker 5: we come back, we're going to close out this great,
- 1:34:16Speaker 5: great album. You know, the 60th anniversary of Sinatra at
- 1:34:20Speaker 5: the Sands. Joe Biscopo, live on the radio. Love having
- 1:34:23Speaker 5: you with.
- 1:34:24Speaker 9: Us, man.
- 1:34:25Speaker 5: Thank you, Mr. Sinatra, man. Just the best of the best.
- 1:34:27Speaker 5: We're coming right back. Don't go away.
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: This is Bolivar's Sinatra Showcase. This is Boulevard's Sinatra Showcase
- 1:34:53Speaker 2: with your host, Joe Piscopo, on Music Radio. Music This
- 1:35:10Speaker 2: is both of us. Sinatra showcase with your host Joe
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: Piscopo on music radio.
- 1:35:18Speaker 5: Hey, Joe on the radio, Boulevard Sinatra Showcase. Thanks so
- 1:35:21Speaker 5: much for tuning in. Man, I tell you, love this album.
- 1:35:25Speaker 5: Love revisiting this album, hearing different cuts in different ways.
- 1:35:29Speaker 5: We'll play it, you know, as we listen. We've been
- 1:35:32Speaker 5: on the air almost six years. You believe that already?
- 1:35:34Speaker 5: Someone said to me when we were at the event
- 1:35:36Speaker 5: with at the beautiful Wingfoot Country Club with Vinnie Madunia,
- 1:35:40Speaker 5: my buddy and my son, Michael, ripped it up. God
- 1:35:43Speaker 5: bless him. And And the Mark Barron band was great.
- 1:35:47Speaker 5: Ivan and the guys were there. And Bruce, cousin Bruce,
- 1:35:50Speaker 5: he was there. How cool was that? But one lady
- 1:35:52Speaker 5: stopped and she said, we love you with the Frank
- 1:35:54Speaker 5: Sinatra show, Joe. We listen. We love it. We appreciate it.
- 1:35:57Speaker 5: And that meant so much to me, you know. And
- 1:36:00Speaker 5: then when I go back and I look back at
- 1:36:01Speaker 5: some of these albums, and then they re-release these albums,
- 1:36:04Speaker 5: and the quality is better. There's something new that you heard.
- 1:36:08Speaker 5: Like in the tea break, there was always something new
- 1:36:10Speaker 5: that was there. It's just a lot of fun. We
- 1:36:13Speaker 5: will be playing it in ensuing weeks. I'll get to
- 1:36:15Speaker 5: your requests. I have them right here in front of
- 1:36:17Speaker 5: me that we didn't get to tonight. We'll do that
- 1:36:19Speaker 5: next week, all right? And also, going into Halloween, I guess, Ricky,
- 1:36:23Speaker 5: great job. Thank you so much. And Elias Raft, thank
- 1:36:26Speaker 5: you so much for putting it together. And Ricky Hubert,
- 1:36:28Speaker 5: thank you. The kid's 12 years old. He works with
- 1:36:31Speaker 5: Cousin Brucey, and we love you, man. Thank you so
- 1:36:33Speaker 5: much for doing that. Shout out to John and Margo
- 1:36:35Speaker 5: Gazzamatidis for allowing us. And Chad Lopez, my dear buddy,
- 1:36:38Speaker 5: was there as well at Wingfoot. So it's a love fest,
- 1:36:41Speaker 5: but we can't do it without you. So you know what?
- 1:36:43Speaker 5: Let's close out with some last words from Mr. Francis
- 1:36:46Speaker 5: Albert Sinatra.
- 1:36:49Speaker 4: You're a delightful audience, ladies and gentlemen. I thank you.
- 1:36:52Speaker 8: And I hope this doesn't come as a severe shock,
- 1:36:54Speaker 8: but I'm through. oh yeah oh it's boozing time hey
- 1:37:02Speaker 8: wait a minute when I'm on the stage I'm the
- 1:37:04Speaker 8: boss you know what I mean you know Rocky and
- 1:37:06Speaker 8: them guys please don't holler there's a gangster sleeping upstairs
- 1:37:12Speaker 8: don't holler you know he's one of them guys he
- 1:37:14Speaker 8: gets mad ladies and gentlemen I'd like to have you
- 1:37:24Speaker 8: meet a young man who is a dynamic entertainer. He's
- 1:37:28Speaker 8: a great piano player, fine singer, and a marvelous friend
- 1:37:31Speaker 8: of mine who opens here very soon, Mr.
- 1:37:33Speaker 4: Buddy Greco. Stand up, bud, take a bow. There he is.
- 1:37:38Speaker 4: There he is. Yeah, Dave. And please, if you will, for.
- 1:37:49Speaker 8: A rising star in the composing field and the orchestrating field, Mr.
- 1:37:52Speaker 4: Quincy Jones. I do mean to say.
- 1:38:03Speaker 8: There are no adjectives, ladies and gentlemen, so I say
- 1:38:05Speaker 8: simply the magnificent Count Basie and his great organization. If
- 1:38:21Speaker 8: you will, my pianist, Mr. Bill Miller, who's behind the
- 1:38:24Speaker 8: second piano up there.
- 1:38:29Speaker 4: See, he can't. along with me.
- 1:38:30Speaker 8: He doesn't do anything. I just brought him along to
- 1:38:32Speaker 8: break up the color scheme. Of course, I don't want
- 1:38:35Speaker 8: anybody to say that we ain't segregated here. And ladies
- 1:38:41Speaker 8: and gentlemen, I would like to leave you with a very,
- 1:38:44Speaker 8: very important kind of thought that I'd like you to remember.
- 1:38:48Speaker 8: I feel very badly for anybody who doesn't drink because
- 1:38:50Speaker 8: when you get up in the morning, that's as good
- 1:38:52Speaker 8: as you're gonna feel all day.
- 1:38:56Speaker 17: The Wrigley Building, Chicago is The Chicago Cubbies, Chicago.
- 1:39:07Speaker 4: Is One town that won't let you down.
- 1:39:13Speaker 6: It's my kind of town. Averillo, Toledo, Greenberg, Goodman.
- 1:39:51Speaker 5: You got to love it, man. And you do, like
- 1:39:53Speaker 5: Charles Pignon said, you feel like you're right back there
- 1:39:56Speaker 5: in 1966. I can't believe I was a kid. You
- 1:39:59Speaker 5: know what I always regret is that I wish that
- 1:40:02Speaker 5: I had said to my dad, because he would understand, Pop,
- 1:40:05Speaker 5: can we go to Vegas and see Frank Sinatra at
- 1:40:08Speaker 5: the Saints? I think I know what he would have said.
- 1:40:11Speaker 5: Are you kidding me? Study, do your homework. But the
- 1:40:14Speaker 5: fact that I was alive during this time. But a very,
- 1:40:17Speaker 5: you know, the young junior high schooler. And I would
- 1:40:20Speaker 5: love to have gone back and saw Mr. Sinatra at
- 1:40:23Speaker 5: the Sands. But you can get it. I'll tell you what.
- 1:40:24Speaker 5: If you go to Amazon or if you go to
- 1:40:27Speaker 5: Frank Sinatra dot com, you'll see Sinatra at the Sands.
- 1:40:30Speaker 5: And this is a release from Capital, UME and Frank
- 1:40:33Speaker 5: Sinatra Enterprises. Now, don't forget, like Charles Pignon said. He goes,
- 1:40:37Speaker 5: you got a five CD box set. I ain't selling this.
- 1:40:40Speaker 5: I'm just telling you, you really might want to listen
- 1:40:43Speaker 5: to this if you're like I am, a complete Frank
- 1:40:47Speaker 5: Sinatra aficionado. There's a five CD box set, right? And
- 1:40:51Speaker 5: then you got a two LP vinyl file. So it's
- 1:40:54Speaker 5: on vinyl. I got mine coming in. Have not gotten
- 1:40:56Speaker 5: them yet. And when we get them, you know, we'll
- 1:40:59Speaker 5: be playing these albums, you know, throughout the weeks that
- 1:41:04Speaker 5: we unfold because I like to kind of get vinyl.
- 1:41:07Speaker 5: If we can get a turntable sound on that, that
- 1:41:09Speaker 5: would be awesome. So it's Biscopo on the radio. We
- 1:41:12Speaker 5: love having you with us. Thank you so much. What
- 1:41:14Speaker 5: a great time to have you with us on Bill
- 1:41:16Speaker 5: of a Sinatra Showcase. Mr. Charles Pignon, thank you.
- 1:41:19Speaker 7: And you know what?
- 1:41:19Speaker 5: Good night, Mr. Sinatra, wherever you are. God bless. And
- 1:41:23Speaker 5: I'll see you next week.
- 1:41:28Speaker 2: This is both of us. Sinatra showcase.
