- 0:07The San Diego Chargers faced the Buffalo Bills for the American Football League Championship game on Saturday, December 26th, 1964.
- 0:16The Chargers were AFL champions in 1963 and finished 1964 in first place in the Western Division with an 8-5-1 record under head coach Sid Gilman.
- 0:27The Bills dominated the AFL landscape in 1964, finishing with a 12-2 record including two victories over the Chargers in the regular season.
- 0:36They were led by head coach Lou Saban.
- 0:39This audio recording is not a complete broadcast of the game, but does include several key plays, commentary, commercials, and locker room interviews after the game.
- 0:48The audio is from the Buffalo Radio broadcast featuring announcers Van Miller, Dick Riffenberg, and Ralph Hubbell.
- 0:56The field is in good condition. The top was removed. There is solid footing. We walked across about half of it, and it's ready to play this game this afternoon.
- 1:05And ready to set the stage for the kickoff in just a moment will be my colleague on the Bills broadcast, Ralph Hubbell.
- 1:11But before we rejoin Ralph, let's take a minute out for this message on the Buffalo Bills football network.
- 1:18Dad and mother, sister, brother, all good neighbors, kind of gather. Western is the place, he says.
- 1:26Deposits made today, earn top interest right away.
- 1:30Fave it, Western, friend, and don't be late.
- 1:33For the better things in life you've always wanted.
- 1:37Save the dollars each week, just bank a few.
- 1:41Stop in at Western, baby.
- 1:44Western's the friendly bank for you.
- 1:49Come in and open your 1965 Christmas Club account at any one of Western's savings banks, three convenient offices.
- 1:56And while you're in the bank, be sure to pick up your free copy of the Farmer's Almanac.
- 2:01... here in the city of Buffalo, New York, where the American Football League overall championship game will be played starting in about three or four minutes.
- 2:10We're still waiting for the players to be introduced down on the field.
- 2:14If you have time, we'd like very much to thank all of the fans along our Buffalo Bills football network for their fine loyalty through the years.
- 2:24And we just hope that you will continue to play on our side and that Buffalo will be able to send great football your way.
- 2:32The Buffalo team is going to receive on the opening kickoff, although the official formality of deciding that has not taken place in the center of the field.
- 2:42We're waiting now for the officials who are getting a little bit anxious and champing it a bit, a bit, to get these fellows introduced and get the game on its way.
- 2:53The fog is beginning to settle in and the lights are penetrating, are dimming just a little bit.
- 3:01The official today's referee will be Bob Finley.
- 3:05The umpire will be Walt Parker, now the official introduction is taking place.
- 3:11The headlinesman will be Al Sabato, the backfield judge Hugh Gamber, and the field judge Frank Rustage.
- 3:20One by one, these players are being brought on the field. It's been five years since the American Football League started its first organizing.
- 3:32And through the lane years, the Buffalo fans, Western New York fans have all stayed right with the club.
- 3:38This year they have set every attendance record for War Memorial Stadium.
- 3:43And there's no question about it that whereas the Sandies are not quite as colorful as they were for the Boston game a month or so ago,
- 3:51they're still standing down there on the right and the stands themselves are being packed to capacity.
- 3:58Right now with a faint applause, the San Diego team is being introduced.
- 4:03However, in comparison to what we saw a week ago at snowbound Boston, the booing by Buffalo fans is not in evidence at all.
- 4:13The Boston fans seem to take great delight in booing every single member of the Buffalo team and especially Cookie Gilgrips.
- 4:23The last title game that the Buffalo Bills played in, but not as these Bills, was in 1948 when Cleveland won by a score of 49-7 in Cleveland.
- 4:32And I remember that game but too well.
- 4:35Four years of the All-American Conference for the Buffalo Bills and now five years for the Bills here
- 4:41and they get another crack at the overall championship of the league.
- 4:46And now the Buffalo Bills are about to be introduced and I rather imagine you'll hear some cheering and they tell us
- 4:52that Lou Saban, who has not been taking any bows this year, is going to be introduced before the game starts.
- 4:59Right here we have the champs.
- 5:04As these fellows are introduced, we'll call them off for you.
- 5:08Rolly McDowell is just introduced. Here's Jim Dunaway, the tackle.
- 5:13And that great big man, Tom Sestak from McNeese State, coming out now.
- 5:21He'll be followed by the right end, Tommy Day.
- 5:31The left linebacker is John Tracy, number 51, coming out now.
- 5:42These are all great ball players, integrated into a great system of football.
- 5:49The middle linebacker is number 64, Harry Jacobs.
- 5:54The right linebacker is the blonde, Mike Stratton, number 58.
- 6:06Here comes number 22, left halfback, left Tracy.
- 6:15Will be Dean Sykes, number 23.
- 6:20And I cross this up. They did the right halfback, George Byrd, number 42, not Dean Sykes.
- 6:29And the next one, and the last one to be introduced, will be George Mane, who will play right safety.
- 6:36So it's a defensive lineup.
- 6:41Mane gets a tremendous hand.
- 6:47Patrick Roeder, one of the officials of the Lambo Hill, is giving Lou an oil painting of himself.
- 6:57And we'll try to catch some of the words.
- 7:02And this next one, we would like to present to the players, we're going to go to the ring to the Lambo Hill family, going to go to the rim.
- 7:13Thank you Ralph, and Merry Christmas everybody.
- 7:18And here we go, for the American Football League Championship of 1964.
- 7:22Jim Warren and Leslie Duncan are standing beneath the upright as Gogolak gets ready to side foot this ball and start the championship game.
- 7:33Today's crowd will set a championship game record in the American Football League.
- 7:37It will be in the neighborhood of 40,000. The lights are on, the temperature is 47, Gogolak sets the ball on the tee.
- 7:44And wherever you are, we hope you'll enjoy our broadcast this afternoon.
- 7:49Warren and Duncan of the Chargers are waiting, and here is Gogolak approaching the ball and he kicks it off.
- 7:55It is high and deep at the goal line and behind it, it has fumbled there and fallen on by Leslie Duncan.
- 8:03There will be no run back and the Chargers will start at the 20-yard line.
- 8:07Heygood Clark was the first man down the field for the Bills.
- 8:11Their backfield will be road at quarterback, low and Lincoln the halfback, Robinson the flanker, and Norton the split end.
- 8:19The center is Don Rogers. The tackles are right and mixed, the guards Weenie and Shea.
- 8:25Here we go, wide to the left is Norton, Robinson is out to the right.
- 8:29In the tee, with the back set in a divide behind the tackles, the first play of the game.
- 8:34Tobin Roque calls it, goes back to pass, gets good protection and gives up the middle to Lincoln, who breaks through to the midfield stripe and is tackled at the Buffalo 41-yard line.
- 8:45Keith Lincoln, a beautiful fake by Roque.
- 8:48Charlie Warner made the tackle at the Bills 42 as Lincoln broke through for a 58-yard gain at the Bills 42-yard line.
- 8:57Wide to the left is Norton, to the right is Robinson.
- 9:00The back set to the weak side, Roque calling his play with Lincoln and Lowe behind him.
- 9:05He gives off again to Lincoln and Lincoln gets about five yards, off right tackle.
- 9:11He is stopped by Susak and McDowell at the Bills 37-yard line.
- 9:16Right goes Robinson, Kasuric is out there too as double flankers.
- 9:20They have a slot back to the left in Lincoln and a wing back to the right.
- 9:25Here's the pass, it is good to Lincoln and he is upended at about the 26-yard line in a spread formation, double wing and double flankers.
- 9:37Sames made the stop at the Bills 26 and the Chargers are on the move.
- 9:42Got a first down.
- 9:45Well, you can expect Sid Gilman to use everything in the book this afternoon, the same formation.
- 9:52A wing back wide to the right this time, double flankers to the right and a split left end.
- 9:57Here's Roque faking back the pass.
- 9:59He drove long and it is caught for the touchdown by Dave Kasuric.
- 10:05And the Chargers lead 6-0 as they drove 80 yards in about five plays.
- 10:13And there's the San Diego Cannon.
- 10:17As the Chargers go out in front with 12.49 left in the first quarter, they have scored in four plays, moving 80 yards.
- 10:30Lincoln is coming in to try the point, keep Lincoln with road holding.
- 10:36The Bills stunned on this drive and they trail 6-0.
- 10:39Here's the try for point, it is good.
- 10:41The score is 7-0.
- 10:43San Diego leads and we'll be back in one minute.
- 10:53Once again, friends, we greet you from War Memorial Stadium where in electrifying fashion the San Diego Chargers have taken a 7-0 lead over the Buffalo Bills in this championship AFL game.
- 11:04Dave Kasuric scored on a pass from Tobin Roach, a 26 yarder, and Lincoln kicked the extra point.
- 11:11So it's San Diego 7 and Buffalo nothing as the kickoff comes up and here again is Van Miller.
- 11:16Warner is deep with Rutkowski, Lincoln kicks off, it is high and short.
- 11:20Coming up on the ball, Rutkowski at the 15 to the 20, the 25, the 30, the 35, out to the 40 yard line and down he goes.
- 11:30We're in the first quarter with 12.31 to play and the clock is running.
- 11:34Jack Kemp was the quarterback.
- 11:36Carleton and Gilchrist are the running backs.
- 11:38DuVernay is flanked to the right.
- 11:40Here's Kemp giving off to Carleton.
- 11:42He finds a good hole and roars up to the 48 or 9 yard line.
- 11:46Off right tackle.
- 11:49He was stopped by Bud Whitehead, the safety man, and Dick Westmoreland and Bass is the split right end.
- 11:56Here is the call by Jack Kemp, the quarterback.
- 11:58He has Gilchrist behind him.
- 12:00He moves him over now behind the tackle, gives the cookie and he fights through for a first down on the plate of the San Diego 49 over right tackle.
- 12:09Ernie Ladd made the stop.
- 12:11George Grote, the left tackle, helped out.
- 12:14It will be first down for the Bills and 10 to go.
- 12:16Gilchrist and Carleton in a divide out behind the tackles as Kemp calls the play.
- 12:21He gives off to Gilchrist again and the big guy Ladd hits him at the line of scrimmage and stops him for no gain.
- 12:28Ernie Ladd was there to great cookie Gilchrist at the line of scrimmage, which is the San Diego 49 yard line and he stopped him right there.
- 12:37It will be second down and 10 to go for Buffalo at the Charger 49.
- 12:41San Diego moved 80 yards in four plays.
- 12:44They lead 7-0 with 10-43 remaining.
- 12:47Westmoreland is playing off him about seven yards.
- 12:50Bass is split right, single coverage as Kemp calls the play on second and 10.
- 12:55He goes back to throw, looks downfield, passes and it is incomplete at the 40 yard line.
- 13:01Defending on the play was the middle linebacker Allen.
- 13:06And they're flip-flopping their safety men now, interchanging them.
- 13:10Here is the call by Kemp on third and 10.
- 13:13He is going to pass.
- 13:15It is good to Gilchrist and then he drops the ball and it goes as an incomplete pass.
- 13:20Dropping back in safety for San Diego Leslie Duncan and Jim Warren or Jerry Robinson.
- 13:27McGuire will punt standing at the Bills 35.
- 13:30Gets a good pass from center.
- 13:32Kicks it high for the right sideline and it goes out of bounds inside the pass.
- 13:38And above the seven and a half yard line.
- 13:41To the right is Robinson.
- 13:43Norton is split left.
- 13:45Back to pass goes Tobin Rowe.
- 13:47He throws long for Robinson and it is no good at midfield.
- 13:52But I'll tell you this, that pass was right on the button.
- 13:57And Robinson who has great speed, glide to the left, Robinson to the right.
- 14:03Tobin Rowe calling the play.
- 14:06On a trap.
- 14:08Into the clear momentarily out over the 20 yard line goes Paul Lowe.
- 14:12George Sames finally cut him down.
- 14:15It will be a first down for San Diego at the 24.
- 14:18They have Lowe and Lincoln out his wing backs in this spread formation.
- 14:23Here is Rowe on a quarterback draw.
- 14:26And he pulls away from one man and then is cut down at the 30 yard line.
- 14:30Falls forward to about the 31.
- 14:33Here is Rowe calling the play on second and three.
- 14:36He's going to pass.
- 14:38He throws over the middle.
- 14:39Lowe cannot hold the ball at midfield.
- 14:42He was down there and the pass was thrown a little bit high.
- 14:46Wide to the right is Robinson.
- 14:48Norton is split to the left.
- 14:49Lowe and Lincoln are the setbacks.
- 14:52Here's the draw to Lincoln trying to get outside and they've got him over there.
- 14:57And they roll him out of bounds I believe short of a first down.
- 15:01McDowell and Tracy made the stop.
- 15:03Guy of the San Diego 34.
- 15:06First down and 10.
- 15:08828 to play in the first quarter.
- 15:10The AFL championship game from War Memorial Stadium in Buffalo.
- 15:14San Diego 7, the bill's nothing.
- 15:17The Chargers break their huddle.
- 15:19Don Rogers the center drops over the ball.
- 15:21Again that spread with a double wingback.
- 15:23Double flankers to the left and the split right end.
- 15:26Rowe back to throw.
- 15:27They blitz him.
- 15:28He throws long and it is almost intercepted by Stratton who was out with Paul Lowe on the play.
- 15:36Stratton had a hand on the ball at the Buffalo 38 but couldn't hold it.
- 15:41It is second and 10.
- 15:42Here is Rowe calling the play.
- 15:44The bills drop off a linebacker.
- 15:46Rowe is back to pass.
- 15:47The swing pass and boy oh boy.
- 15:50The man was hit hard inside the 30 by Stratton and he is hurt.
- 15:56It is Lincoln and he was really hit by Mike Stratton just as the ball came into his arms
- 16:03and he was really shaken up on the play.
- 16:06And Ralph you don't see any tackles harder than that.
- 16:10The hardest tackle that I saw all year was one that Booker Edgerton put on here.
- 16:16That was on cold call about six or eight weeks ago but this lad down here right now is really suffering.
- 16:23He was hit so hard by Mike Stratton that he almost came out the other side.
- 16:29He is still on his back down there on the field.
- 16:32We are at War Memorial Stadium here in Buffalo.
- 16:35The score is San Diego 7, Buffalo nothing.
- 16:39The injured player is Keith Lincoln and he is stunned.
- 16:44There is no question of it.
- 16:47We are going to pause 10 seconds for station identification.
- 16:51Chargers at their 34.
- 16:52Here we go.
- 16:54Rowe rolling out a reverse.
- 16:56Norton, one man misses him and now they get him for a loss inside the 30 yard line.
- 17:03McDole made the tackle on the play.
- 17:06Tracy missed him but McDole got him on the split end reverse.
- 17:11Waiting for the snap from center on this punt, a good pass from center.
- 17:15The kick is high, a beauty.
- 17:17Waiting for it is Haygood Clark at the 30.
- 17:20Up to the 35 spun around and then hit there and dropped at the 35 yard line.
- 17:27721 to play in the first quarter.
- 17:30Don Rogers made the tackle.
- 17:32That was a 43 yard punt and a five yard return.
- 17:36Dubenian is flanked to the right.
- 17:37Double coverage on Dubenian as Kemp calls the play.
- 17:42The linebackers have moved out of the picture.
- 17:45Let's see if he goes up the middle.
- 17:47Gilchrist trying to sweep left end.
- 17:50Gets away from one man and then is hit down at the 40 yard line.
- 17:53A flag goes down.
- 17:57Maybe grabbing the face mask.
- 18:00Great block by Bass.
- 18:03I thought maybe that Gilchrist might cut in.
- 18:05They're going to penalize San Diego 15 yards.
- 18:08Ernie Ladd grabbed the face mask.
- 18:11That pulls the ball into Charger territory to the San Diego 46 yard line.
- 18:17A personal foul for grabbing the face mask on Ernie Ladd.
- 18:216'9", 295 pounds.
- 18:25Bass wide to the right, Dubenian flanked to the left.
- 18:28He goes back to pass, looks downfield, knocked up into the air and incomplete.
- 18:34It was blocked out there by alignment, Earl Faza on the left end.
- 18:38Five men up on the line for the Chargers.
- 18:41Kemp back to throw.
- 18:43Good to Bass.
- 18:45And he is hit there and dropped inside the 30 yard line at about the 26th.
- 18:51A 20 yard pass.
- 18:53A first down for the Bills.
- 18:56First down and 10 for Buffalo.
- 18:59The Buffalo backfield is Kemp, Carlton, Gilchrist and Dubenian.
- 19:03Bass split left, Dubenian flanked right.
- 19:08Six men up on the line for the Chargers.
- 19:11Gilchrist moves over behind Kemp.
- 19:13He goes back to pass again, looks, runs out to the right, now throws.
- 19:17It is good to Warlick.
- 19:19And he is shoved out of bounds by number 89 Ron Carpenter, the linebacker at the 11 yard line.
- 19:26A 15 yard pass and a first down for Buffalo.
- 19:29Kemp asks the crowd to quiet down.
- 19:32The backs to divide.
- 19:33Gilchrist to the left and Kemp to the right behind quarterback Kemp.
- 19:38Calls his play.
- 19:40Gives to Carlton.
- 19:41Over left tackle.
- 19:42Inside the 10 and down to about the 6 yard line.
- 19:47Good blocking out in front of him.
- 19:49Gross made the stop.
- 19:50The left tackle.
- 19:54Bass is split to the right.
- 19:58Let's see what Kemp will do.
- 19:59Will he roll out or give it straight ahead?
- 20:01He calls the play.
- 20:02On the same play Carlton cuts in and is stopped at about the 4 yard line.
- 20:08Ladd and Gross made the tackle.
- 20:12Here is Kemp on that big third down play at the San Diego 5.
- 20:16Third and about three and a half.
- 20:19He gives to Carlton.
- 20:21No fake.
- 20:22He passes.
- 20:23Touchdown.
- 20:24No!
- 20:25No good.
- 20:26They say DuVenon was out of the end zone.
- 20:29DuVenon was out of the end zone.
- 20:32It is not a touchdown.
- 20:33His feet did not come down.
- 20:37Inside the end zone with 4.21 remaining in the first period.
- 20:42The Bills trailing 7 to nothing.
- 20:46LaMonica will hold at the 12 yard line right in a little patch of sand out there on the
- 20:51only wet part of this field where the tarps come together around the center of the field
- 20:57waiting for the snap on this field goal attempt from the 12.
- 21:00The kick is up and the kick is good.
- 21:03And the Chargers lead 7 to 3 after Gogolak's 12 yard field goal and we'll be back in 10
- 21:10seconds on the Buffalo Bills football network.
- 21:13That was brilliantly executed and has brilliantly caught but the feet were in the air and you
- 21:20can't carry a ball that way into the out of bounds area and still have it count for points.
- 21:26So Buffalo has shaved the point lead to 4 now trailed by 3 to 7 and here's Pete Gogolak
- 21:35putting that ball on its tippy toes and he's all ready to boot it.
- 21:40Here's Matt Miller.
- 21:41The deep man are Jim Warren and Leslie Duncan.
- 21:43Here's Gogolak approaching the ball.
- 21:45He kicks it off high and long.
- 21:47In the end zone it is taken there and going to be run out by Duncan.
- 21:515, 10, 15, 20, outside 25, 30, two men to the midfield, down to the 40.
- 21:59One man gets them from behind.
- 22:01A great tackle by McGuire at the 35 yard line of the Bills.
- 22:08McGuire made a diving tackle.
- 22:11Paul Low carried to the Bills 32 yard line stopped by McDowell.
- 22:153 yards, 2nd and 7.
- 22:17Well Duncan almost had it all on that kickoff return.
- 22:2270 yards, he got to the outside running to the right and had just two men to beat until
- 22:27McGuire cut him down from behind.
- 22:30Out of the huddle come the San Diego Chargers leading 7 to 3 late in the first quarter in
- 22:35that double wing spread formation.
- 22:38Back to pass goes Tobin Rowe.
- 22:40They rush him out of the pocket.
- 22:42He looks, he passes, interception!
- 22:47Charlie Warner has the ball at the 28 yard line of the Bills.
- 22:53Sustak hit him and the Bills take over on the interception by Charlie Warner.
- 23:00First down for the Bills at the Buffalo 28 yard line.
- 23:04The pass was intended for Robinson.
- 23:07Out of bounds and about the 40 yard line of San Diego.
- 23:14A beautiful block by Glenn Bass as Gilchrist ran outside right in.
- 23:20Bass, the split in, cut the corner man down on the play.
- 23:24Rowe made the tackle outside the San Diego 40.
- 23:28The Bills got 32 yards on the play.
- 23:30Kemp rubbing his hand in this 47 degree weather to warm them up a little bit.
- 23:35Back to pass, good protection.
- 23:37He fakes, he throws, and it is good to Dominion at the 14 yard line.
- 23:43Wait a minute, Warlick, it was Ernie Warlick at the 14 yard line.
- 23:48A first down Buffalo.
- 23:5127 yards, Bass to Warlick.
- 23:54That's Buffalo, 6th first down of the game.
- 23:57The Chargers have 4.
- 23:59The Bills trail 7 to 3.
- 24:02Kemp is now 3 of 7 for 62 yards.
- 24:06Gilchrist has gained 38 and 4 rushes, Carlton 15 and 3.
- 24:13First down Buffalo at the San Diego 14, and here we go.
- 24:18Bass flips out to the left.
- 24:20Dominion is the flanker back to the right.
- 24:22They have a four man front where their defense stats 3D.
- 24:27Here is Kemp calling the play.
- 24:29Outside, cut back in, fights down there to about the 11 yard line.
- 24:35Petrich, the right end, and Allen, the middle linebacker, made the tackle.
- 24:39They spotted at the San Diego 11.
- 24:42He rolls out to the right, gets a good block.
- 24:45He's going to run, and he has tackled beautifully at the 8 yard line by Faison.
- 24:50What a tackle by Faison right around the ankle.
- 24:55They have blocked out the left corner linebacker nicely on the play.
- 25:00It is third down and 5 for the Bills at the San Diego 8.
- 25:05And you have to believe that Kemp will throw the ball in this situation
- 25:09on a third down and 5 from the San Diego 8 yard line.
- 25:15The Bills out of the huddle.
- 25:16Dominion flanks left.
- 25:18Bass is the split right end.
- 25:20Four seconds left in the quarter.
- 25:23Are they going to get the play off?
- 25:25They are not.
- 25:26And that is the end of the first quarter.
- 25:28And we'll be back in one minute on the Buffalo Bills football network.
- 25:35Has come to a close with the San Diego team,
- 25:38the short of the first four plays of the game, leading by a score of 7 to 3.
- 25:43And as we look down there now, Buffalo is in scoring position.
- 25:47And here's Van Miller to call the play.
- 25:51San Diego 8 yard line.
- 25:53The last time they had a third down inside the 10.
- 25:56Dominion caught the ball but was over the sideline in the end zone.
- 26:00And they had to settle for 3.
- 26:02The Bills trailing 7 to 3.
- 26:04And here is the play with Kemp calling it.
- 26:06He goes back to pass, looks toward the end zone, fires there.
- 26:10It is almost intercepted, dropped by a San Diego linebacker,
- 26:15number 55 Frank Buncombe.
- 26:18And again the Bills field goal unit goes on the field.
- 26:21And Gogolak will try this one from around the 15 yard line.
- 26:25And so again the Bills have been boarded in their touchdown attempt.
- 26:30Now the first time they passed to Dominion they had just one man on him.
- 26:33But that time the cornerback and the linebacker were covering.
- 26:37Buncombe had gone over to help Westmoreland.
- 26:40This will be a 16 yard field goal attempt by Gogolak from the hash mark at the far side of the field
- 26:46with LaMonica holding.
- 26:48There's the buffet. LaMonica's going to run.
- 26:51And he is hit at the 5 yard line.
- 26:54And he does not get it and the Chargers take over.
- 26:57Diego leading 7 to 3.
- 26:59It was not an option pass or run.
- 27:01It was an obvious attempt to run right end.
- 27:05Their backfield is Rote, Low, Kinderman I believe, and Robinson is the flanker.
- 27:11First down at the 6 yard line.
- 27:14Buffalo has driven after Warner's interception from about the 28 or 9.
- 27:19Here's that spread formation with Rote in the middle as the quarterback.
- 27:25At the 6 yard line he gives off on an inside reverse to Kinderman.
- 27:30And they second up Sestak leading the charge at about the 8 yard line.
- 27:35Pass at the 5, the Low to the 10.
- 27:37And he tackled and knocked down at about the 16.
- 27:40And that will be I believe enough for the first down.
- 27:42With 13.29 to play in the first half.
- 27:45And the clock activated once again.
- 27:47The Chargers leading 7 to 3.
- 27:51Keith Lincoln was injured when he was tackled on a swing fast play by Mike Stratton.
- 27:56And has been replaced by Kinderman.
- 27:58Double wing, double flanker.
- 28:00And here is Rote back to pass.
- 28:03Over the middle it is good to Kinderman at the 20.
- 28:06And he is hit down hard.
- 28:08But first by Tracy.
- 28:10And McDowell was in to help finish him off.
- 28:14And Rote on one knee in that huddle.
- 28:16Playing his last game today.
- 28:18Sends the Chargers up to the line.
- 28:20Rodgers to center, drops over the ball.
- 28:22Again that spread off the double wing and double flanker.
- 28:26Back to pass goes Rote.
- 28:27The quick one is no good.
- 28:29It was intended for Paul Low at the 27 yard line.
- 28:33It was thrown behind him and out of bounds.
- 28:36Again that double wing and spread formation.
- 28:39And here is Rote back to pass.
- 28:41Gets good protection.
- 28:43Throws over the middle.
- 28:44It is caught beautifully.
- 28:46No, wait a minute, no good.
- 28:48Robinson had it at the 39 but couldn't hold it.
- 28:50Warner was on his back.
- 28:54Robinson was facing away from us and we thought he had the ball.
- 28:57But when he fell he did not have it.
- 28:59And so the Chargers will have to punt on fourth and five from their 21 yard line.
- 29:05The Bills have Clark and Rakowski upfield.
- 29:09Low pass from center.
- 29:10He scoops it up and gets it away.
- 29:13It is taken at the 45.
- 29:14Fumbled by Rakowski.
- 29:16I think the Bills have it.
- 29:19Clark rather fumbled it and fell on the ball at the 44 yard line of Buffalo.
- 29:24And the Bills have a first and tenth.
- 29:27That was a 35 yard punt.
- 29:29And Hadal did a good job of scooping the ball up.
- 29:32He trapped it off the skin part of the infield.
- 29:35Here is tenth.
- 29:36First down.
- 29:38Back the throw.
- 29:40Good to do, Banyan, at the 40.
- 29:42Tackled at the 37.
- 29:46Jim Warren stopped him at the Chargers 37 and a half yard line.
- 29:51We're in the second period here at War Memorial Stadium in Buffalo.
- 29:55We have 11 minutes and 12 seconds to go.
- 29:58And the fog is settling in.
- 30:01You can even feel some moisture from it as umbrellas are beginning to go up around the stadium.
- 30:08Now the signal is to start the clock once again.
- 30:11And that's the signal to charge Van Miller.
- 30:13It's first and tenth for the Bills.
- 30:15Outside the Chargers 37.
- 30:16Lincoln has come back out along the sideline.
- 30:19Dirk Kemp on his first down play.
- 30:21Back the path.
- 30:22The draw to Gilchrist outside.
- 30:24And he has hit and stopped at about the 33 yard line.
- 30:28That was an outside draw.
- 30:30Instead of running up the middle, he tried to get to the outside.
- 30:33He won the second quarter with 10.25 left.
- 30:36Jabenya is flanked to the left.
- 30:38Bass is the split right end.
- 30:40Five men on the line for San Diego.
- 30:43Kemp gives to Kemp and tries to tackle and it's hit there beautifully on a driving tackle by Gross.
- 30:53Number 33, Graham in there too.
- 30:57The gain of a couple of yards to the 29.
- 31:00It will be third down and about two to go.
- 31:04Gilchrist and Carlton are in behind Kemp.
- 31:07Bass is split right.
- 31:08Jabenya is flanked left.
- 31:10And here's the call by Kemp.
- 31:13To Gilchrist, he drives in there and I don't know whether he's got it or not.
- 31:17It will be close.
- 31:19In there around the 22 and a half yard line.
- 31:23He may be a little bit short.
- 31:26Are they going to measure?
- 31:28They're going to take the chain in and stretch it out.
- 31:31It's a first down.
- 31:37Nine twenty-eighths of play in the first half.
- 31:41In just a moment we'll give our stations around the network an opportunity to identify themselves.
- 31:47Here's the play, second down, Buffalo at the San Diego 27.
- 31:52Kemp the quarterback with Bass to the left and Jabenya to the right.
- 31:55He fakes the deep reverse to Jabenya at the 30, the 25, the 20, and down he goes at about the 19 yard line.
- 32:05Bud Whitehead hit him there.
- 32:08They ran that play to the closed side of the field.
- 32:14You would think that they would try to run that reverse to the open side of the field, but they didn't.
- 32:19They came back to the short side, an eight yard gain at third down and two for Buffalo.
- 32:25Kemp rolls out.
- 32:29He passes.
- 32:31It is good to Gilchrist at the five.
- 32:34And he's got a first down.
- 32:36What a play by Kemp.
- 32:38Buncombe made the tackle at the four.
- 32:42Kemp threw the ball with Allen around his ankle.
- 32:45Fifteen yards at first and goal.
- 32:48Well, I'll tell you, Kemp did a job that time.
- 32:53And Gilchrist made the catch.
- 32:55It's awfully tough against that big front four.
- 32:59Maybe it's just an illusion, but San Diego looks so much bigger in those white jerseys.
- 33:04Kemp, long count.
- 33:06Carlton fighting in for the touchdown.
- 33:11Off right tackle.
- 33:13And the Bills lead by a score of nine to seven.
- 33:16And listen to this crowd.
- 33:18Daryl LaMonica will come in and hold for Pete Gogolak.
- 33:36Extra point try at the ten yard line.
- 33:40The Bills have gone out in front nine to seven.
- 33:44San Diego led seven-three at the end of the first quarter.
- 33:47The kick is up and good.
- 33:49And Buffalo lead ten to seven.
- 33:52And we'll be back in one minute on the Buffalo Bills football network.
- 33:57Warren and Duncan are deep.
- 33:59Here's the kickoff.
- 34:00It is high.
- 34:01And again it goes into the end zone.
- 34:03Three yards.
- 34:04Warren is going to run it out to the ten to fifteen.
- 34:07And he has hit it about the twenty-three straight on.
- 34:13And he's got Clark within there.
- 34:14Duncan carried the ball.
- 34:16Meredith felt it in hard.
- 34:18And San Diego has the first down.
- 34:21It was Duncan who returned that kickoff to the twenty-four yard line of the Chargers.
- 34:26Twenty-six yard return.
- 34:28Over the middle, almost intercepted at the twenty-five.
- 34:32Zestak made a dive at the ball.
- 34:35Norton's split to the left.
- 34:36Again a pass play.
- 34:37Rope throwing.
- 34:39It is batted down by Bird at the forty yard line.
- 34:42Intended for Norton.
- 34:44Bird made a great play.
- 34:47Third down and ten for San Diego at the Charger twenty-four.
- 34:51Butch Bird, the rookie from Boston University.
- 34:56The linebackers up the blitz.
- 34:57Good blocking.
- 34:59A pass out here.
- 35:00A flag on the play.
- 35:02It is incomplete.
- 35:04Intended for Robinson out of the right flat.
- 35:07But now let's see what the call is going to be.
- 35:09Thirty-nine yard line of the Bills.
- 35:12And Buffalo will take over there after that thirty-seven yard punt.
- 35:17First and ten for the Bills at the Buffalo thirty-nine yard line.
- 35:22Jack Kemp, who again this afternoon has played brilliantly so far in this game.
- 35:29Throwing under tackle to Gilchrist at the four yard line to set up the Bills first touchdown of the afternoon.
- 35:38It's first down at the Bills thirty-nine.
- 35:42Jabenian is flanked to the right.
- 35:44Bass to the left.
- 35:45The give is to Carlton.
- 35:46And he is hit after about a yard gain at the forty yard line by George Gross.
- 35:51They are trying to run over Gross, the defensive left tackle.
- 35:55Carlton has run that same play now four times.
- 35:58That time it gained a little better than a yard.
- 36:01Bass is the split right end.
- 36:04Kemp calling his play for Buffalo.
- 36:06Back to pass a four man pattern.
- 36:08He runs at the forty, forty-five midfield and dives in to the San Diego forty-seven yard line for a first down.
- 36:18Whitehead and Allen hit him.
- 36:20And I'll tell you, Mr. Kemp just put his head down and tore into him.
- 36:26That is ten first downs for the Bills.
- 36:30Thirteen yard gain for Kemp.
- 36:33First down in San Diego territory at the forty-seven.
- 36:37Bass is split to the left.
- 36:38Four forty-seven left in the first half.
- 36:40The Bills lead ten to seven.
- 36:42They have a first down and ten at the San Diego forty-seven.
- 36:45Here is Gilchrist finding a hole inside the forty, thirty, twenty-five, twenty, fifteen, ten, and out of bounds at the eight yard line.
- 36:55What a job Gilchrist did on that run.
- 36:58Really ripped on that play.
- 37:01First and goal at the eight.
- 37:03DeVinion planks to the right.
- 37:05Bass splits to the left.
- 37:07Kemp with those sleeves rolled up above the elbows calls the play.
- 37:12Gives the carton a good hole inside the five and down to about the two or three.
- 37:18On that off tackle shot over Groats, the left defensive tackle.
- 37:23He gained about five on the play.
- 37:26Barber blocking beautifully in there.
- 37:28DeVinion made the stop and here we go.
- 37:31Wide to the left is Bass.
- 37:33DeVinion is flanked to the right.
- 37:35The backs are to the weak side.
- 37:37And here is Kemp giving again to carton.
- 37:40He has hit right at the line and scrimmaged there.
- 37:42Might have fallen forward for about a half a yard.
- 37:46A good tackle by Graham, the safety man.
- 37:49They've got him back at the ten yard line.
- 37:51He slipped and fell just as he was ready to throw.
- 37:54And Carpenter, the linebacker who was flitzing, stopped the play at the San Diego 10.
- 38:00And the field goal unit is coming on.
- 38:05Two-fifty to play in the first half.
- 38:07And so the Bills have had the ball now four times inside San Diego's ten yard line.
- 38:14And the total points on the scoreboard, a field goal and a touchdown so far.
- 38:20And now Gokalak is going to try a 17 yarder from the hash marks across the field.
- 38:26The kick is up and the kick is good and the Bills lead 13 to 7.
- 38:32And the 15, the 20, the 25 and he has hit outside the 30 and spun around
- 38:37and dropped at about the 32 or 3 by McGuire.
- 38:43Dudley Meredith also helped out on that tackle.
- 38:4628 yard return. Warren and Duncan have great speed.
- 38:50And they have displayed it here, running back those kickoffs this afternoon.
- 38:55First down San Diego, the Bills lead 13 to 7 as we approach the two minute mark in the second period.
- 39:03Here's Rowe the quarterback, back to pass, gets good protection.
- 39:08Fake swats now throws. Intercepted beautifully by Stratton.
- 39:13He laterals the ball to Bird at the 35 and he retreats to the 30.
- 39:18And then comes upfield to the 35, the 40, the 40.
- 39:22At the 45 a flag on the play, midfield and down he goes.
- 39:28Dykes with a block, there's a flag on the play at the 42 yard line of Buffalo.
- 39:35I think they are going to allow the interception and probably call a penalty
- 39:39for clipping on the attempted return.
- 39:43That's the preliminary indication now, although we'll just wait.
- 39:49They're going to give San Diego the ball. Wait a minute.
- 39:52At the 42 yard line of the Bills, the official pointed San Diego downfield.
- 40:00There's a discussion out there at the 43 yard line.
- 40:03It is a first down San Diego. Apparently pass interference was the call.
- 40:08It would have to be pass interference.
- 40:12Pass interference is the call.
- 40:17All right, he threw the flag later, we didn't see it.
- 40:22But it has to be pass interference.
- 40:24The first down Chargers at the Bills 43 yard line.
- 40:27They have the double flankers and a spread, wrote back to throw.
- 40:32In short, it is caught inside the 40 at the 37 yard line by Kinderman,
- 40:38who was tackled by Jacobs, the middle linebacker,
- 40:40and the Chargers are asking for a timeout.
- 40:44And we'll turn it back to Ralph Hubbell.
- 40:46Well, that was the strangest one I've seen in a long time, Van.
- 40:50It didn't seem to be any immediate call of the interference penalty,
- 40:53but of course there was so much scrambling going on that nobody was looking for flags at that time.
- 40:59And we did, there it was.
- 41:02And so Buffalo had a good break, what looked to be a good break.
- 41:06They have Robinson wind to the right, Norton split to the left,
- 41:10wrote the quarterback, pitches out to the halfback, low at the 35,
- 41:14and inside the 30 on a good run, tackled by McDolan Day.
- 41:23Now was there a flag drop there? No.
- 41:25They've got the ball at the 28 yard line of the San Diego Chargers,
- 41:29and again the Chargers call timeout to stop the clock.
- 41:32Now they move it back to the 29.
- 41:34It's in Buffalo territory, outside the 28, between the 28 and 9,
- 41:40a first down for San Diego at that point.
- 41:43And again, Ralph, they have called timeout to stop the clock.
- 41:46A desperate charge to get into that scoring column again before the end of the second quarter,
- 41:511.27 to go, and here's Van.
- 41:53The ball at the Bills 28 and a half yard line, a first down for the Chargers.
- 41:57They have used up all but one of their timeouts now.
- 42:00They have one more coming to them in this first half.
- 42:03Norton is split to the left, and again they have the spread formation, as wrote,
- 42:09against the three-man rush goes back to pass Long, and oh, almost intercepted by Warner at the 5.
- 42:17He had the ball all alone at the 5 yard line and could have done the Bills some good there,
- 42:231.21 to play in the first half, and Warner, in his anxiety to run with the ball,
- 42:30did not have possession of it at the 5.
- 42:33The Bills had Robinson covered well on the play, the split end,
- 42:37and so at a second down and 10 for San Diego at the Buffalo, 29 yard line.
- 42:43For some reason they moved it upfield about a foot after that incomplete pass.
- 42:48All right, here come the Chargers.
- 42:50Off the spread again, it's wrote, three-man line for the Bills.
- 42:55He looks, he throws, it is good to Norton, and he is down.
- 42:59He gets up to run again, but the play has been blown dead at about the 16 yard line.
- 43:05The clock is running now.
- 43:06San Diego will not huddle on this play with 1.06 remaining.
- 43:11Here is wrote, the quick pass, intercepted by the Bills.
- 43:17Stratton has the ball at the 18 yard line, and the Bills take over.
- 43:23Wrote, instead of throwing over the sideline, threw the ball to his receiver,
- 43:31and Stratton picked it off.
- 43:33It was intended for Norton.
- 43:34The Bills have it, and the clock is running with less than a minute remaining.
- 43:38In the first half, it is first down Buffalo at the Buffalo 18 yard line.
- 43:44The Bills huddling back at the 10.
- 43:47The clock ticking off the seconds, that's the third interception.
- 43:52Of course, one was nullified, so give him two officially.
- 43:57Jabenian wide to the left against double coverage, 33 seconds left.
- 44:01Here is Kemp giving to Gilchrist outside, finds a bit of a hole,
- 44:06and then is spun around and dropped at the 24 yard line of the Bills.
- 44:1121 seconds, 20.
- 44:14The Bills are going to be content not to try anything here that would lose them the ball,
- 44:19and I believe they are going to let the clock run time out in the first half.
- 44:23Nine seconds, eight, seven, six, five.
- 44:27The Bills leading 13 to seven.
- 44:30San Diego led seven to three at the end of the first quarter.
- 44:33There is the gun ending the half with Buffalo leading San Diego 13 to seven.
- 44:39The Chargers scored seven in the first period, nothing in the second.
- 44:43The Bills a field goal in the first by Gogolak and 10 points in the second.
- 44:48And that's the half of it, and Ralph Hubbell will be back with our intermission show
- 44:53after this one minute pause on the Buffalo Bills football network.
- 44:57You see a lot of yellow flickers around here today, sort of sparkled throughout the stadium.
- 45:03The lights have been on since the start of the game at War Memorial Stadium.
- 45:07Duvenion is flanked to the left, and Bass is the split right end.
- 45:11Kemp is the quarterback, Carlton and Gilchrist are the running backs.
- 45:15And here is the call by Kemp.
- 45:17He calls on Gilchrist and he dives through the pile and squirts forward for a couple of yards.
- 45:24He picked up about two on the play, and then he was stopped by George Gross, the left tackle.
- 45:29Spot the ball up around the Bills 37-yard line.
- 45:33It will be second down and about eight to go.
- 45:35Passes, it is no good to Bass.
- 45:39He trapped the ball at the 46-yard line, made a good move to get around Allen the linebacker,
- 45:44but he had picked the ball off the ground.
- 45:48It's a close ball game in the third quarter with 11 minutes and 11 seconds remaining.
- 45:52Second down and 10 for San Diego at the Charger 43-yard line.
- 45:56The Bills are leading 13-7 in the game that will decide the American Football League champion.
- 46:03Again the spread, wrote all alone.
- 46:06Back to Bass.
- 46:08The quick one is, oh Tracy almost had it picked off at the San Diego 45,
- 46:15and Tracy would have gone for the TD.
- 46:18It was again intended for Robinson, and Kucerich was over there with him.
- 46:24Oh, that was close.
- 46:28Tracy, the left linebacker, had broken through and got his fingertips on the ball,
- 46:34and they've got him short of the first down, up around the 48- or 9-yard line.
- 46:44Bird slowed him down and Day made the tackle on him, and now San Diego will send John Hadel into punt
- 46:50on fourth down and about four.
- 46:53It is high and short.
- 46:56It bounces inside the 20, rolls inside the 15, and is going to be surrounded and down
- 47:03just at the 10-yard line of San Diego or a Buffalo.
- 47:09A 41-yard punt, rolling dead at the 10-yard line, 10 minutes and 13 seconds to go.
- 47:18The rain is still lasing down. It's a cold, misty rain.
- 47:23First down Buffalo at the 10-yard line, kept the quarterback, sends Bass to the left,
- 47:28Dubenny to the right.
- 47:30They'll be looking for Gilchrist and Carlton now, the setbacks, to give us to Carlton,
- 47:34and he hits a stone wall but manages to get out to the 14-yard line.
- 47:40Again on that crossfire play from left to right, he picked up four on the play.
- 47:45Allen, the middle linebacker, made the stop.
- 47:48It is second down and now sets team along the line, and second and six at the Bills 14.
- 47:55It is Gilchrist, and he looks for a hole, but it does not open.
- 47:59Ernie Ladd smothered him along with Bob Petrich.
- 48:02Right at the line of scrimmage, he might have gotten a yard to the 15 on the play
- 48:07as he ran outside left tackle.
- 48:12It is third down and five, tackled by Chuck Allen, the deep diagonal to Albert Dubennyan.
- 48:20First down for the Bills, 20 yards on the play, closer to 21.
- 48:28Calls his play, waits for the snap, has it, here's Carlton again, fighting for yardage,
- 48:33and Ladd rode him down from behind after about a two-yard pickup
- 48:37somewhere in the neighborhood of the 38-yard line.
- 48:41It will be a second down play for the Bills, and they'll need about seven yards for the first down,
- 48:47seven to seven and a half yards, make it second and seven.
- 48:52Ball spotted at the Bills 38-yard line.
- 48:56Seven minutes and 30 seconds left in the third quarter.
- 48:59The Bills 13, the Chargers 7.
- 49:03Now he waits for the snap of the ball, goes back to pass, looks downfield,
- 49:10throws a good catch at the 45 by Gilchrist.
- 49:13He tries to get up and run, but is written down by Allen, the middle linebacker,
- 49:19and Carpenter set it down and they decide it is not a first down, it will be third down.
- 49:27Six-fifty-seven remaining in the third quarter, Buffalo leading 13 to seven.
- 49:36Running backs Carlton and Gilchrist, who are set in a divide.
- 49:42The tackles Gross and Ladd are right in there tight.
- 49:45Will Kemp go straight ahead? Let's see if he does.
- 49:48He gives instead to Gilchrist off the pile for the first down.
- 49:51What a play he made.
- 49:53And they shove him out of bounds at the 49-yard line.
- 49:58Bass to the left, Duvenion flanked to the right.
- 50:02Kemp calls the play, takes the snap, goes back to pass.
- 50:08Duvenion at the 40, down he goes.
- 50:10And San Diego Territory, the San Diego 39, first down.
- 50:14Up the middle goes Carlton and a flag is going down on the play.
- 50:19He gained a couple of yards to about the 38-yard line.
- 50:24Now wait a minute, let's see what the call is here.
- 50:28The official is pointing at the bill, so we must assume that this penalty will be assessed against Buffalo.
- 50:34Gross made the tackle with Ernie Ladd and it may be a major penalty,
- 50:39because the Buffalo offensive unit, except for the captain, has retreated back into Buffalo Territory.
- 50:47And they're going to march off a 15-yarder against the Bills.
- 50:52And that takes the ball back into Buffalo Territory to the 46-yard line.
- 50:57Offensive holding is the call.
- 51:00So they will run the first down play over again.
- 51:04And the Bills will need 25 yards now.
- 51:08Kemp, ready to direct the ball club, as Duvenion flanked to the left.
- 51:14The quarterback comes up.
- 51:15Kemp goes back to throw. They've got him from behind.
- 51:18Petrich at the 35 blindsided him and dumped him for the loss.
- 51:24Bob Petrich from the 35-yard line of Buffalo.
- 51:29They lost 15 on the penalty, 11 on the blitz.
- 51:33Here is Kemp looking to throw again, runs out to the right.
- 51:37Now throws. It is fumbled there, incomplete.
- 51:42The ball at the 49-yard line of San Diego was intended for Duvenion, but he couldn't hold onto it.
- 51:50And the Bills now have a third down and 36.
- 51:56The swing pass to Gilchrist is no good at the 37-yard line.
- 52:01And the Bills will have to punt on fourth down and 36 from their own 35, 20-yard line.
- 52:09We'll see if Lowe or Lincoln come back into the ball game here.
- 52:12Here's the punt.
- 52:14It bounces at the 30 and is picked up there and returned by Robinson.
- 52:19They miss him at the 40, 45, midfield. One man to beat.
- 52:23And they've got him there in Buffalo territory at the 47-yard line.
- 52:29McGuire again made the tackle.
- 52:31And the Chargers on a good play by Robinson, a dangerous play, nonetheless have a first down in Buffalo territory.
- 52:39Sends Robinson to the right, pitches out to Lowe, and they stack him up there and drop him close to the line of strippage.
- 52:47Tracy and McDull were there to hit Paul Lowe as he took the pitch out and ran to the right sideline,
- 52:55trying to get around the corner, a yard gain on the play, second down and nine for the Chargers at the Bills 41-yard line.
- 53:04Three minutes and 56 seconds left.
- 53:06Four times in the first half, the Bills were inside San Diego's 10.
- 53:11They scored three of those times, a touchdown and two field goals, a fake field goal on a fourth down play misfired.
- 53:18Throat goes back to pass, runs out to the right, fake throws, knocked into the air, intercepted and dropped.
- 53:26Knocked into the air by Tracy, and Day almost had it picked off.
- 53:31Well, that was another near interception by the Bills.
- 53:35Earlier Tracy almost had one.
- 53:38John Hadel is coming in for San Diego.
- 53:42Hadel is coming into the backfield and Rhodes is going out.
- 53:46Looked downfield, throws.
- 53:49Is it intercepted? Yes, it is at the 20-yard line by Byrd, and the Bills have the ball.
- 53:58George Byrd caught the ball at the far side of the field, just got it before it went over the sideline,
- 54:06and the Bills take over at the 21-yard line, the Buffalo 21, 322 to play in the third quarter.
- 54:15Back to the huddle now with Gilchrist, Carlton and Dubenion, his backfield.
- 54:20Bass and Warlick the end, Barber and Hudson the tackle, Shaw and B. Miller the guard, Kudzik the center.
- 54:27First down, Buffalo at the Bills 21.
- 54:30Wide to the left, Dubenion to the right, Bass, the backs to the weak side,
- 54:36and it is Gilchrist finding a hole, ripping out to about the 30-yard line.
- 54:44And how that cookie is running today, I'll tell you.
- 54:50After a doggedly fought and scoreless third period, the Bills strike again early in the fourth.
- 54:55Kemp hits Glen Bass on a look-in and the speedy end streaks to the one, setting up an easy TD by Kemp.
- 55:03Paul McGuire puts the icing on the championship cake with this gorgeous 64-yard punt to the Chargers 2 near game's end.
- 55:13The scoreboard shows us 56 seconds remaining and Buffalo with a 20-7 lead.
- 55:22It'll be a long trip home for San Diego after this game today,
- 55:28just as it was probably a shorter trip than we ever took when we came from Boston last Sunday night.
- 55:35Funny how victory makes the trip lose its miles almost immediately.
- 55:41Yes, the crowd is really gathering right now from all sections of the area.
- 55:47We see their signs. I notice Oakfield is represented down there.
- 55:51And the players themselves are standing in front of the bench.
- 55:56The lone person to be sitting down is Jack Kemp, who is sitting on the bench down to the right of our broadcasting equipment.
- 56:05And the fellows are coming around, ladies are coming around, shaking his hands.
- 56:10Jack must be a happy man. There was one period there about three weeks ago when he was very unhappy
- 56:16and lost his starting quarterbacking job to Darrell LaMonica.
- 56:21Here is Haydl up on his feet. He wouldn't use the stretcher. And look at that crowd.
- 56:31He's not only up on his feet, but he's going to stay in the game.
- 56:37He tried to get that ball out there on a run out, but he was knocked down,
- 56:43although he did manage to get it out for a first down.
- 56:46So it will be first and 10. And the ball is on the 15-yard line of the San Diego Chargers.
- 56:53And now the man who has called them all for five years is ready to step back in
- 56:58and call off the championship second for the Buffalo Bills, Van Billing.
- 57:04Thank you, Ralph. 56 of those seconds remain, and it is 20-7 Buffalo.
- 57:09Tobin Rhoade has replaced John Haydl as quarterback.
- 57:14Well, the Bills have waited a long time for this victory, and it is just 56 seconds away.
- 57:21Spread formation, double wings, double flankers, wrote the pass.
- 57:25They rush him, stratton hits him, but the pass is good to Kinderman.
- 57:2915, 20, 25, 30, still on his feet and down to the 37-yard line.
- 57:3745 seconds left, and San Diego steps the clock.
- 57:41A 22-yard pass, Day making the tackle from behind.
- 57:46San Diego 37-yard line, Paul McGuire is going into the game, and Day is coming out.
- 57:53We'll talk with Thurlow McCready on the postgame show, and Bob Gallagher, the voice of the Patriots.
- 58:01Tobin Rhoade, playing his final, the final seconds of his career, is back to pass, off the spread,
- 58:08over the middle, no good, intended for McKinnon.
- 58:13At midfield, it is incomplete.
- 58:16McGuire and Jacobs were there with him.
- 58:1941 seconds to play, Dick Reifenberg will have a rundown of today's championship game
- 58:25on today's 6.15 sports on WBEN, and of course, will be on with a postgame show
- 58:31over many of our network stations following the broadcast.
- 58:3541 seconds left, second and 10 for the Chargers at the San Diego 37-yard line.
- 58:42Out of the huddle they come.
- 58:44Tobin Rhoade, wait for the snap from center, goes back to pass, three-man rush,
- 58:51a little swing pass is good to McKinnon, and nice wraps him up at the 44-yard line.
- 58:56Helped out on the tackle by McGuire.
- 58:5933 seconds to play, and again they stop the clock.
- 59:04We would like to thank our spotters, Tony Vacanti, Dr. Ed Gosevich, Jim Georgison,
- 59:11Herman Brunati, Dr. Bob Werner for their splendid assistance on the broadcast this afternoon,
- 59:18and Messrs. Vacanti, Georgison, Gosevich, and Brunati for their splendid help all season long.
- 59:27We couldn't have done it without them.
- 59:3033 seconds left.
- 59:33Tobin Rhoade with a third down and three from the 44-yard line is back to pass.
- 59:39Suss-Dack has him at the 30-yard line.
- 59:44The clock is running now and they cannot stop it.
- 59:47Wait a minute, yes they do.
- 59:49The goal post in the East End Zone is tottering now, and down it comes.
- 1:00:00And there is a search.
- 1:00:02The crowd is out on the field and they're going to have to suspend play, Ralph, with 26 seconds remaining.
- 1:00:10A mob at each goal post.
- 1:00:15Well, Ralph, we'll turn it back to you.
- 1:00:18Yes, 26 seconds of the years left.
- 1:00:23And these fans have gone absolutely crazy.
- 1:00:2821 seconds, 20 seconds, play is in on the field and the fans are all over the field.
- 1:00:34They better look out.
- 1:00:35Go ahead, fans. Here's the Charger huddle.
- 1:00:38Now there's the line of Strimmage.
- 1:00:40Back to pass goes Rhoade. The little spring pass is good.
- 1:00:4330, 35, 40, 45, midfield, three seconds, two, one.
- 1:00:49The Mills are champions.
- 1:00:52The Mills are champions.
- 1:00:53They beat the Chargers 20 to 7 with three points in the first quarter, 10 in the second,
- 1:00:59none in the third, and the final seven in the fourth.
- 1:01:02San Diego scored only in the first quarter, and we'll be back in one minute.
- 1:01:06The Razor from Duke, the guy they thought was washed up, he came back this year.
- 1:01:10He played like an All-American.
- 1:01:12Ray, they thought you over, but you came back. What a bargain. They had a touchdown of you. It was tremendous.
- 1:01:16Thank you very much, Ray.
- 1:01:17Ray, this has got to be one of the biggest fills of your eyes.
- 1:01:19Sure is.
- 1:01:20I had a feeling we were going to beat them. We should have beat them worse than we did, but it was a tough ballgame.
- 1:01:25It was hard to run out there because of the weather conditions.
- 1:01:29It was a good, hard-hitting ballgame, and we just thankfully win.
- 1:01:32Ray, are you going to play next year for us?
- 1:01:34I sure am.
- 1:01:35What a season, Razor. What a season.
- 1:01:37Thank you.
- 1:01:43Mike Stratton. Mike. Mike.
- 1:01:49Mike Stratton, the all-A grindback from Tennessee. Mike, a great ballgame today.
- 1:01:52The most finest hour you've ever had.
- 1:01:54Thank you very much, Ray. Thank you.
- 1:01:56We won tremendous ballgames.
- 1:01:59What happened when you hit Lincoln?
- 1:02:01What happened when you hit Lincoln there?
- 1:02:03I don't really know. I didn't stay around to find out. I don't know what happened.
- 1:02:06I just wanted to win a ballgame, so glad I couldn't say. I didn't care what happened.
- 1:02:09Why did we win? Why did we win?
- 1:02:11We do anything different on defense?
- 1:02:12Pardon?
- 1:02:13We do anything different on defense?
- 1:02:14We do anything different. I need to say.
- 1:02:16I was just about to say. I was just a little bit better today, it seems like.
- 1:02:19Harvey Johnson, the director of player personnel.
- 1:02:24Harvey Johnson, the guy who put this team together was fine dress, he's great.
- 1:02:27Harvey, what a ballclub.
- 1:02:29That was a wonderful game for us. I'm so happy for the boys. They played like champions.
- 1:02:33Thank you very much, Harvey.
- 1:02:35Concept tackle, a wrong world tackle.
- 1:02:38The time you played against Twinny, you didn't do a thing. You had a great ballgame today, Tom.
- 1:02:42Thank you very much, Barry.
- 1:02:44He's a much improved ballplayer. He's done a tremendous job today.
- 1:02:49I know a well-coached ballclub there. Got time to push it out.
- 1:02:52Is it the greatest thrill you ever had?
- 1:02:54Definitely, it sure is. I tell you, it's something else. It's something once in a lifetime, you know.
- 1:03:00And it's really great. Beautiful thrill.
- 1:03:02Our defense do anything different today, Seth?
- 1:03:04No, we didn't do anything. We just kept doing the same things we did all year.
- 1:03:08We just got a little confused out there at first.
- 1:03:11But we settled down and started playing ball as we really want.
- 1:03:14Tom, a great season. You can't add any much more to this. All world, all pro. And now everything else.
- 1:03:20Thank you very much, Barry.
- 1:03:22I want to say thank you to the school.
- 1:03:46We're going to give the sisters a game of our own, too.
- 1:04:06Harry Jacobs. Harry Jacobs. After the defense, the middle line back there. Harry, what a job you've been today.
- 1:04:12Thank you, Barry. It's been wonderful to be the world champion, Barry.
- 1:04:14Harry, do we do anything different defensively against them?
- 1:04:16It's all we do is play a solid defense like we did all year.
- 1:04:18We didn't do as much defensively as we've done in the past games.
- 1:04:20Didn't need to. Didn't need to.
- 1:04:22We've got guys like Mike Stratton and John Tracy doing the job. You don't have to.
- 1:04:25Well, I guess not. And all the rest of the guys out there are just trying to get the job done.
- 1:04:28John Tracy. John Tracy, the All-American Texas A&M. You sit at the beginning of the year.
- 1:04:33The first time we came in here, no one's going to touch us.
- 1:04:36That was another team effort, Barry. That's what I've been saying all year.
- 1:04:39As long as we keep the team effort going, nobody's going to beat it.
- 1:04:41We're all a bunch of individual players. We just get to play as a team and help.
- 1:04:45You can't beat team spirit.
- 1:04:46Our defense was tremendous today. We could have had nine, ten interceptions if the guys could have held onto the ball.
- 1:04:51Well, that's where you had no hands. You know, same old thing. Got steel boards for hands, Barry.
- 1:04:55Great job. What about next year, Johnny? You're going to play next year for us.
- 1:04:58Are you kidding me? You're kidding me?
- 1:05:00I want more of that champion's money, Barry.
- 1:05:01Have a great winter.
- 1:05:03Billy Shaw, the captain of the Buffalo Bills. Billy, we've spoken so many times during the course of the year.
- 1:05:08You said this is a bar code that could go all the way.
- 1:05:11You said we take things from the proper perspective, we're going to go all the way.
- 1:05:14Billy, you're a prophet.
- 1:05:15Thank you very much, Barry. Of course, a lot of things entered into our championship.
- 1:05:20Of course, the great teamwork that we had and the closeness that was created by our coaching staff.
- 1:05:26And I think that went a long way for our championship.
- 1:05:28What about the team itself? Well, you played together as a unit.
- 1:05:31Fiennuals, Shaw, Barber, such that. All the guys played together as a unit.
- 1:05:35Was this the key to it?
- 1:05:36I think so, Barry. We have no stars on this team. Everyone is equal.
- 1:05:40And I think this is the reason.
- 1:05:42And what about Billy Shaw? What can you do more for this field, Billy?
- 1:05:46You're all pro, all world, and you're all the captain of the world champions.
- 1:05:49This is the greatest thrill for me in my life. It certainly is.
- 1:05:52Billy, thanks very much.
- 1:05:53Oh, Tudzik! You're out in the center.
- 1:05:55Well, you played last year. 51-10, you lost 20 playing for Boston.
- 1:05:59We got even with him this year.
- 1:06:00We got even.
- 1:06:01Yeah, we had a ball club. Everyone was playing hard.
- 1:06:03I just wanted to say our offensive line, all the guys that work hard, work together.
- 1:06:09And we try to give our players the protection that they need today.
- 1:06:12Thanks very much. Jerry Smith, the coach of the offensive line.
- 1:06:16Joe, your coach of defense last year.
- 1:06:18This year, your coach of the offensive.
- 1:06:19Last week at Noh Henry, he had a perfect game. No one touched their quarterback.
- 1:06:22This week, Saison, all the big studs we kept in mind.
- 1:06:26But you can give all the credit to that offensive line. They're great. That's all. They're just great.
- 1:06:30They really did a job. They can't single anybody out because they were a unit.
- 1:06:33That's right. That's the way we've been playing, and that's the way I know we'll continue to play next year.
- 1:06:37Do we do anything different on our offensive assignments?
- 1:06:40No, we just ran a lot of our standard stuff against their different defensive staff.
- 1:06:45Okay, thanks very much.
- 1:06:47Ronnie McTorrell, the corner-husker from Nebraska.
- 1:06:50Ronnie, you came to camp at the beginning of the year. No one thought you had a chance to turn out to be one of the best defensive players in the league.
- 1:06:55Ronnie, my hat is off to you.
- 1:06:57Thank you, but it's been a great year for me and everybody.
- 1:07:00And today we proved that we were champions.
- 1:07:02How is it playing against Ron Nish?
- 1:07:04It's always tough. It's always tough.
- 1:07:06No matter, all three times I've played against him here, he's just a fine football player.
- 1:07:09You've had a great team victory, Ronnie.
- 1:07:11Oh, great.
- 1:07:12George East Flint, our swing guard for the last four years.
- 1:07:15Everyone comes and tries to take away his job. No one can do it because George is a fine ballplayer.
- 1:07:20George, what a ballgame.
- 1:07:21Thank you, Barry. It was a truly ballgame.
- 1:07:23Those guys really did have a beating, though.
- 1:07:26I swear I'm going to have to rest through the week.
- 1:07:28I'm going to come back next year in July and we're going to have to do another World Championship.
- 1:07:32I'll tell you, I'm going to start lifting weights Monday.
- 1:07:34Lifting weights and training.
- 1:07:36Al B. Miller! Al B. Miller!
- 1:07:39Big B smoking on the cigar that Pamela Gorter gave him.
- 1:07:42B said last week that it was just the biggest blow as you had when you were playing for Syracuse.
- 1:07:46He said no because now you're getting paid for it.
- 1:07:48What can you do now as the champions of the World, B?
- 1:07:51All I can do now, Barry, is just keep playing football and win it again next year because that money is awful nice.
- 1:07:56It was a great team effort. How was it to switch the guy this year?
- 1:07:59Well, it was sort of rough. It's a lot different from center, but I hope I did a good job for him.
- 1:08:04Thanks very much. One of the real gentlemen in sports, one of the finest defense offensive professional football,
- 1:08:10one of the captains of the San Diego Chargers, Earl Faison.
- 1:08:13Earl, your boys played a great ballgame. You had a tough break when Keith Lincoln got here,
- 1:08:16and then when Lance Alvarez got here.
- 1:08:18That was just some of the breaks of the game, you might say.
- 1:08:21Buffalo played ahead of the game and they deserved to win it.
- 1:08:25Thanks very much, you all. Have a nice winter.
- 1:08:29Dick Hudson. Dick Hudson, this must be three three veins.
- 1:08:33The San Diego Chargers let you go on a trade.
- 1:08:35Now you came back to Haunum. You had a great ballgame with them, Dick.
- 1:08:38Thank you very much, Barry. This is the greatest thing that ever happened.
- 1:08:41We really appreciate it. Paul McGuire! Paul McGuire!
- 1:08:45The second-lead, the third-lead, the real spirit man behind the Buffalo Bills.
- 1:08:48Paul, we didn't speak to you much last week.
- 1:08:50So, what a revenge. You said you could beat them, you said they couldn't match us. You were right.
- 1:08:55Well, the things that were in the paper, I didn't say, but I knew we could beat them and we did.
- 1:08:59I got the greatest football team that I've been saying all year long, that I've ever seen in my life,
- 1:09:03and they proved it today. Even the San Diego Chargers told me the same thing on the field.
- 1:09:07They said, you guys really deserved this ballgame because you fought for it.
- 1:09:10And they played fine football. They did. They really did. They never let down.
- 1:09:13And neither did the Chargers, but we just out-hit them. We out-out everything.
- 1:09:18Is this the biggest thrill in playing with the Chargers when he won, Paul?
- 1:09:21This is what I've been looking for. This, to me, just made my whole year.
- 1:09:24Anything can happen now. I could care less.
- 1:09:26Two championship checks in one year.
- 1:09:28That helps.
- 1:09:29It's a really good...
- 1:09:30Third one next year, Paul.
- 1:09:31I hope so.
- 1:09:32We got Larry Stelz in the fine sports commons for the Buff Weaving News.
- 1:09:48Larry, you said at the beginning of the year that if the girls don't get hurt and play as a team,
- 1:09:51they can go all the way. Larry, your profit.
- 1:09:53Well, I'm very happy about that. They deserve to win. They outplay these people all the way.
- 1:09:58They probably should have won by a bigger score.
- 1:10:00A great team effort, Larry.
- 1:10:02Thanks very much, Larry.
- 1:10:04Eddie Abramowski!
- 1:10:06The trainer of the Buff War, Bill.
- 1:10:08Billy Bates popped off his mouth at training the Patriots.
- 1:10:12Who are they going to beat us by? Two touchdowns?
- 1:10:14You said we were going to be sent by two.
- 1:10:16Tell me confidently before the week, said Bill, we're going to beat these guys by at least 10 points.
- 1:10:20You were right.
- 1:10:21We were lucky, Bill. We went after them. We saw them at touchdown and we went after them.
- 1:10:24Just like I knew we would.
- 1:10:25The market is a great barcode.
- 1:10:26Right. We held them when we had to.
- 1:10:27A bigger score than we were in the trainer of Kentucky and of the Detroit Lions.
- 1:10:31Yes, sir. This is the best. We never won it when I was with Detroit.
- 1:10:34We won the division, but never the...
- 1:10:36We did win the division. I take it back.
- 1:10:38We did win the thing, but we lost to the All-Stars.
- 1:10:40It was a little edge off it.
- 1:10:41And we really did a job today that came back from behind.
- 1:10:43Yes, they did. Like I said, Barry, they come to the spot at the touchdown and went after them.
- 1:10:47And we certainly came back from...
- 1:10:48Ernie Wallack!
- 1:10:49With five hands in the Buff War, Bill, is a big horse.
- 1:10:51Ernie has some real big catches today.
- 1:10:53Great. A wonderful feeling.
- 1:10:55Do you realize that this is the first championship game I've ever been on?
- 1:10:58In all your years?
- 1:10:59Confessional, Ernie.
- 1:11:00A great game today and a great season, Ernie.
- 1:11:03You played like a kid today.
- 1:11:04I can't believe it. I can't believe we won it.
- 1:11:06I can't believe it.
- 1:11:07What about next year? Are you going to play for us again next year?
- 1:11:09Definitely.
- 1:11:10The old guy goes on.
- 1:11:11I have to say that if he was going to retire next year, he's going to...
- 1:11:14Not unless I wanted to. I guess I'll be around.
- 1:11:16Fine. Thank you.
- 1:11:17Johnny Mazer, the offensive coach, the former greater Notre Dame.
- 1:11:20Johnny, who was quarterback in the 1949 team to finish, was undefeated.
- 1:11:24Was that a bigger thrill as this one is today?
- 1:11:26Well, I was younger then and I didn't know the value of the dollar as much as I know now
- 1:11:30and I didn't have a family, Barry.
- 1:11:32So I think this one is a little bigger thrill because it means a few more dollars in the bank account.
- 1:11:37Johnny, did we do anything different offensively?
- 1:11:39No, the last two weeks we said we thought we could take advantage of
- 1:11:42and we were proven right that we could take advantage of them
- 1:11:45and the kids played a heck of a ball game.
- 1:11:47It's a great team effort, John. Beautiful team effort.
- 1:11:50All year long, Barry, all year long.
- 1:11:52And you couldn't single out any one guy because it was a team effort?
- 1:11:55No, I wouldn't try to single out anybody.
- 1:11:57It was just a great year for a great bunch of football players.
- 1:12:00Okay, thanks very much.
- 1:12:01And my brother, the man who brought pro football to Buffalo, New York,
- 1:12:05had all those years when he was the head of the Chamber of Commerce in the past.
- 1:12:08He finally brought it here and now we've got a winner.
- 1:12:10We've got the champion.
- 1:12:11That's the man, Barry.
- 1:12:12The champion.
- 1:12:13We've got it. Thanks very much.
- 1:12:15Nick Gallagher, the general manager of the Buffalo football,
- 1:12:17professional football addict, you were with the Cleveland Browns,
- 1:12:20anything like this, nothing like this.
- 1:12:22We've waited five years for this and, boy, I'm telling you,
- 1:12:25these guys have overlapped a lot of things.
- 1:12:27We were hung in there with the greatest honor of professional football.
- 1:12:30You know what this was today? This was the World Champions Cup.
- 1:12:32And we certainly did it.
- 1:12:34Tiffy Day.
- 1:12:35How you doing there?
- 1:12:36Tiffy Day, all year long, Tiffy, you played a great job with the defense.
- 1:12:39What a ball game, Tiffy.
- 1:12:41I'm telling you, with that one, I got the strawberry to prove it.
- 1:12:45You played against Bernie White today, you really handled him.
- 1:12:47Right.
- 1:12:49I got Bernie White pretty well set now, but he's still top.
- 1:12:52He's still one of the best in the league.
- 1:12:54It was a great ball game.
- 1:12:55Terrific. How you doing, Barry?
- 1:12:57Okay, okay, Tiffy.
- 1:12:58Darryl O'Monica. Darryl O'Monica.
- 1:13:0118, 19, 20.
- 1:13:0418, 19, 20.
- 1:13:07Darryl O'Monica, the greatest,
- 1:13:09the least quarterback of professional football,
- 1:13:11the second year man from Notre Dame.
- 1:13:12Darryl, you came off the bench so many times this year
- 1:13:14and did a job for us.
- 1:13:15The last two ball games, you didn't play it all,
- 1:13:17but Jack went all the way. I know you were on the sidelines
- 1:13:19helping him out with his calls.
- 1:13:20I was ready just in case, but very fortunate, Jack had a real
- 1:13:24two terrific games.
- 1:13:25We came out on top, but this has been a winning combination
- 1:13:28all year long.
- 1:13:29If Jack was cold, I could come in and I hope that I was hot.
- 1:13:33If I was cold, it was vice versa.
- 1:13:35It was a great season all the way.
- 1:13:37What happened with that reverse that takes you over?
- 1:13:40I had an audible eye, and no one heard my audible eye.
- 1:13:42It was automatic number seven, and no one heard it.
- 1:13:45I didn't have any receivers, so I was kind of out there all by myself.
- 1:13:48A great season, Darryl.
- 1:13:49Thank you, man.
- 1:13:50Sue Barber! Sue Barber!
- 1:13:56Sue Barber, the only Jack off from Michigan for Penn State,
- 1:14:00so you were all back to Penn State and all through now,
- 1:14:02what a thrill, Sue.
- 1:14:03Greatest thrill of my life.
- 1:14:05You didn't really handle them today, Sue.
- 1:14:07Well, we all did a good job, I think, proven by the score,
- 1:14:10and I think that this team really deserves a lot of credit.
- 1:14:13They stuck together through the whole year, through second thin,
- 1:14:15and I think this was a difference.
- 1:14:16It's a real team battle.
- 1:14:17Did you do anything different today, personally?
- 1:14:19No, no, we all played the hardest football we could,
- 1:14:23and eventually we were good enough to win.
- 1:14:26You said before the ball game that we need 100 and 7 percent
- 1:14:29effort in order to win the ball game.
- 1:14:30That's what we got.
- 1:14:31I think so, Barry, definitely.
- 1:14:33Okay, thank you.
- 1:14:34Chuck Spurs, Assistant General Manager of the Colton's Director of Publicity.
- 1:14:37My name's Chuck.
- 1:14:38What a thrill.
- 1:14:39Oh, this is my...
- 1:14:40I know last week I'd never seen another thrill like it,
- 1:14:43but this tops it.
- 1:14:44We're the champs all the way, and this is a great ball club, Barry, great.
- 1:14:48This is a great trick.
- 1:14:49I'm so proud of them.
- 1:14:50Guys like Glenn Bass, playing ball for us, catch us fast,
- 1:14:54there's Devinian, what a team effort.
- 1:14:56Suddenly Meredith.
- 1:14:57Come here, big star.
- 1:14:58What a game.
- 1:14:59Oh, man, it's lovely to be a champ, I tell you.
- 1:15:02You started off with Houston and you ended up here.
- 1:15:04You ever think that could happen?
- 1:15:06Never thought it'd be possible.
- 1:15:08Pretty sweet, isn't it?
- 1:15:09It's the most wonderful feeling I've ever had in my life, baby.
- 1:15:12Okay, Dudley.
- 1:15:13Very fine, baby.
- 1:15:14Okay.
- 1:15:16Glenn Bass, a fine sport, and Glenn, what a day today, what a day.
- 1:15:19Oh, thank you very much.
- 1:15:20Glenn, you almost went all the way in that touchdown.
- 1:15:22You missed by about an inch.
- 1:15:23No, I think I got it.
- 1:15:24Let's say I got it, huh?
- 1:15:25We'll give it to you then, Glenn, a fine ball game.
- 1:15:27Thank you very much, Barry.
- 1:15:29Mr. Bob Rustig.
- 1:15:31Mr. Bob Rustig, one of the men on the board of directors for Ralph Wilson,
- 1:15:35one of his business assistants.
- 1:15:36What a ball game, Barry.
- 1:15:37Well, the game is right.
- 1:15:39That's two in a row that we won so convincingly,
- 1:15:41the two that we won, Boston and this one, no doubt about it.
- 1:15:44No doubt about it.
- 1:15:46Now one of the greatest quarterbacks in pro football,
- 1:15:49a fine gentleman, George Redham, and George is back in Buffalo,
- 1:15:52this time with a winner.
- 1:15:53It's time to return the shoes.
- 1:15:54I brought them from the Bills today.
- 1:15:56There must have been good luck for the Bills.
- 1:15:57A great ball game, wasn't it, George?
- 1:15:59Tremendous ball game, two good football teams out there today.
- 1:16:01George, you played in both leagues.
- 1:16:03How does this league compare to the others the way we played?
- 1:16:05The Bills and the Chargers can play in the national league as well as anybody.
- 1:16:08Okay, George, thanks very much.
- 1:16:10Eddie Rutkowski, the goal is almost no today.
- 1:16:13What a ball game, Eddie.
- 1:16:14What a heck of a ball game.
- 1:16:16This is the greatest one we've ever had, the greatest one that I've ever had.
- 1:16:19I'm telling you, this is great.
- 1:16:20I'm telling you, this is a great bunch of guys.
- 1:16:22Thank you, Barry.
- 1:16:23Willie Ross, cookie-joker, a thunder study for Nebraska.
- 1:16:26Last week he said he was going to come back, we're going to take him.
- 1:16:28We did it, Willie.
- 1:16:29Really, we did.
- 1:16:30I'm telling you, it felt real good, I'll tell you.
- 1:16:33It was a tight game, but we stuck in and everybody was blocking real well
- 1:16:38and cookie was playing real well, and we didn't have too much trouble after.
- 1:16:44Thanks very much.
- 1:16:46Gene Sykes, former Tiger from LSU.
- 1:16:48Gene, you started this season on the taxi slide.
- 1:16:50You came in to play the last nine ball games.
- 1:16:52You did a great job as a tight end safety.
- 1:16:54Thanks a lot.
- 1:16:55I really appreciate it.
- 1:16:56It's a good opportunity to play with a bunch of guys like this and win the championship.
- 1:16:59Everyone here in Brooklyn has been waiting a long time for it.
- 1:17:01It means a lot to us, too.
- 1:17:03You ever have a throw like this when you're playing for LSU?
- 1:17:05I don't think I like this, no.
- 1:17:07Nothing could stop you?
- 1:17:08No, nothing.
- 1:17:09Thanks very much, you know.
- 1:17:11We're trying to get for you Commissioner Joe Foss, the commissioner of the American Football League.
- 1:17:16He's making his way over.
- 1:17:18Commissioner Joe Foss, five years ago we started the American Football League.
- 1:17:22Look who we are now, we could play anybody.
- 1:17:24Well, the way they looked out there today, they were ready.
- 1:17:26It was a good hard-fought game all the way and a clean game.
- 1:17:30It was a great ball game and it shows the overall balance of our league.
- 1:17:33Well, that's the thing that we've been very fortunate with all since we started,
- 1:17:38is to have balance in the league and we've shown up every year with different faces in the championship game,
- 1:17:45which is a good indication of it.
- 1:17:47It must be quite a thrill for Joe Foss, the commissioner of the American Football League,
- 1:17:50to walk around here and see 40,000 streaming fans.
- 1:17:53No more to get in, we could have sold 100,000 more tickets.
- 1:17:56Well, it's a good thing and speaks to all of the fans in the Buffalo area, that's for certain.
- 1:18:02Commissioner Foss, you've done an excellent job and thanks very much for this interview.
- 1:18:05Thank you.
- 1:18:06The greatest shoulder professional football, Mr. Ralph C. Wilson Jr. of Detroit.
- 1:18:09Mr. Wilson, a great moment for you.
- 1:18:11Yes, it is. It's a great moment for Lou and the assistant coaches and particularly the team, everybody, and the fans of Buffalo.
- 1:18:20I'm very happy. It's a happy New Year for everybody.
- 1:18:22Five years ago you bought the Buffalo Bills and it was a little frustrating the first three years.
- 1:18:25And now you stuck with the team. Now the city got behind the Bills and stuck with them.
- 1:18:29Mr. Wilson, my hat is off to you and cheerleaders for the amount of devotion you put into the city of Buffalo and renewing this fine football city.
- 1:18:36Well, thank you very much. You know, we always figured it was going to be about a five-year build-up.
- 1:18:41Of course, the team came along a little faster this year than anybody expected.
- 1:18:44And we certainly had two great football teams playing for the championship today.
- 1:18:49And I'm very happy the both came out on top.
- 1:18:51Mr. Wilson, I'm proud to be associated with your organization of class all the way from the top to the bottom.
- 1:18:56Mr. Wilson, once again, thanks very much. Finest owner of professional football, Mr. Ralph C. Wilson Jr.
- 1:19:00Well, I don't know about that finest owner, but thanks for your kind comments.
- 1:19:03Okay, Mr. Wilson, thank you.
- 1:19:05Tommy Saban, the son of Lou Saban, the Buffalo Bills head coach. Tommy, this must be quite a thrill for you.
- 1:19:10You know, your dad had a tough first couple of years. I know you and your mother Lorraine and the rest of the family stuck by him.
- 1:19:16And now we got a championship.
- 1:19:17You said before the ballgame you wanted a Christmas present from your dad at the World Championships. We got it now, Tommy.
- 1:19:22Yeah, he's going to be real happy and so is the rest of the family. Everybody's happy now.
- 1:19:27This will be a happy year for everybody.
- 1:19:30It must be tremendous, Tommy.
- 1:19:32Yeah. My children may get home, my mother will probably be dancing around the whole house.
- 1:19:37I don't blame her at all. I don't blame her.
- 1:19:39Charlie Young, the sports editor of the Bucsweving News.
- 1:19:41Charlie, you said last week this was the greatest football show we've ever had in Buffalo.
- 1:19:44We want one better, Charlie.
- 1:19:46Well, I said it was last week and certainly two now. More than ever.
- 1:19:51They did a real good job, Roger. It was a real fun time for you for the first two minutes. I had to scramble for that.
- 1:19:56They certainly did. Thank you very much.
- 1:19:57That's fine.
- 1:19:58Dr. Stone Van Miller, the vice for the Buffalo Bills, man. Five years ago.
- 1:20:01We finally got a great win, wasn't it? Very wonderful.
- 1:20:04And I know how close you've been to this team and you're a real part of it. And we rejoice with you in this wonderful victory.
- 1:20:10A great victory.
- 1:20:11All the players and coaches and Mr. Wilson.
- 1:20:13And a lot of my friends up there. We'll do that, man. Thanks very much.
- 1:20:16How are you, man?
- 1:20:18Shelley Warner from 32 A&M, the boy who came in this year from the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 1:20:23And he came in. He did a great job playing at the corner spot.
- 1:20:26Yeah, great. Thank you, Warner.
- 1:20:28I'm glad I could be a part of this wonderful machine that Buffalo Bill has.
- 1:20:31And I'm looking forward to coming back next year and trying to do a good job.
- 1:20:34You did a great job, Shelley.
- 1:20:35Thank you.
- 1:20:37Maylon Kent, quarterback of the Buffalo Bill's taxi squad.
- 1:20:40You're a great deal above. You played down in the Southeastern Conference for Auburn.
- 1:20:43Anything that's real like this, Maylon?
- 1:20:45No, it's about as cool as beating Alabama, I believe. It's been a great thrill.
- 1:20:48You were on the phones all day today talking to Johnny Mayson. What were you talking about, Maylon?
- 1:20:52We were just figuring out what players would do best and what he wants the quarterback to do.
- 1:20:56And then he talks to them back and forth.
- 1:20:58Did you do anything different, Maylon?
- 1:21:00Nothing different. We just stuck with the game plan and it worked.
- 1:21:03Best of luck next year, Maylon.
- 1:21:04Thank you, man.
- 1:21:05George Steen is a great free safety, an all-fool free safety.
- 1:21:08George, you could have had a dozen interceptions today if it wasn't for money.
- 1:21:11You weren't throwing my weight, Barry.
- 1:21:13But, you know, like I said before, it's a unit.
- 1:21:16You pick up a slack or something else in the habit and defense, offense, everyone did a hell of a job.
- 1:21:21During the course of the week, you were confident that we would beat them.
- 1:21:23Yeah, I was. I'm not excited as I wasn't after the one game. I just thought we had it.
- 1:21:27You went out and did a job today, George.
- 1:21:29We did the job.
- 1:21:30Great job you did.
- 1:21:31They played the ball, too.
- 1:21:34Jerry, once again we got it grabbed. What a thrill.
- 1:21:38Oh, it really is. It really is.
- 1:21:40I see you've got the game ball, Jerry. You deserved it all year long. You worked for it. We finally got it.
- 1:21:44Well, thank you. Thank you very much.
- 1:21:46Glad to have it. You gave it to all the assistants.
- 1:21:48Everyone. You got one.
- 1:21:50What a job, Jerry.
- 1:21:51Thank you.
- 1:21:52Jack Kemp, what a ball game it is. All during the course of the year, we said that you could do it.
- 1:21:55We talked about it at the editorial and also our WZOA listeners.
- 1:21:58I had the faith in you and a more important coach, Ruth Saban did.
- 1:22:01Really, you could do it all and what you thought was the most important thing. You certainly did.
- 1:22:05Thank you very, very much. Appreciate your help and your confidence and it means a lot to me.
- 1:22:09Jack, would you do anything different today?
- 1:22:11Well, we ran more basically because he's one of his own defense and forces into more of a running game and control the football and that's the big thing.
- 1:22:19That one pass to Cookie when you were trapped behind the line in the scrimmage or set up a field goal, was that an auto or was it a gamble?
- 1:22:25It was a roll out with an option and I thought about running it but then I thought I wouldn't make it so I thought Cookie would stand in there and flip it over and the big horse got in.
- 1:22:35You finally beat the San Diego Chargers going all the way.
- 1:22:37Yeah, you know, give me a time.
- 1:22:39Jack, are you going to stay in Buffalo during the offseason?
- 1:22:42Well, Coach Saban wants to chat with me and I want to stay around and ski for a while and we're just going to kind of play it by ear today.
- 1:22:48Jack, a great season. I really want to thank you for all the conversation you've given me.
- 1:22:52Thank you.
- 1:22:53Joe Collier, the brilliant defensive strategist for the Buffalo Drolls.
- 1:22:56Joe, what a broad game. What a broad game. Your defense was superb.
- 1:23:00Oh, it was tremendous, very tremendous. We certainly appreciate the way the defense has played for us this year.
- 1:23:04We've got some outstanding individuals but I think our defensive club is one that is outstanding as a unit.
- 1:23:10We may not have the best personnel in the league but the team that stays together is the one that's going to win and we had a fine defensive unity this year and we certainly appreciate the way they played for us.
- 1:23:19Joe, you started out this year and they started running the traps up the middle for their first score.
- 1:23:23After that, what do we do to readjust and keep them from scoring?
- 1:23:27Well, we tightened our line down to trying to cut their splits down. They were trying to split us out wide and we thought if we tightened up our defensive line they would have more trouble getting through there, which they did.
- 1:23:36And our outside linebackers played good balls to maintain their outside game and the corner men played a particularly good game. Bush Bird, actually his man didn't catch one ball, which was outstanding.
- 1:23:46Joe, thanks very much.
- 1:23:47Thank you.
- 1:23:48Albert, you've been in the Greatest Point in Quebec in professional football. We've spoken to you so many times before about your confidence, about the way you could come back. This is a big thing that you and John Mays have worked on.
- 1:23:59It's brought fruit today. What a ballgame.
- 1:24:01Thanks Barry, thank you very much.
- 1:24:02Did you double team any out there at all today?
- 1:24:04Well, a couple times today but we ran the, what we call, the square end pattern and I lost the face of the man.
- 1:24:11The second ballgame, the second time we played the Chargers this year on Thanksgiving Day, you've played but you certainly weren't at your maximum effectiveness because of your knee injury. Now you're 100% effective and you certainly showed it today dude.
- 1:24:22Thank you Larry.
- 1:24:23I feel real good today.
- 1:24:24What about next year? Will you be going to play for us again?
- 1:24:27Well I hope I don't get to cut a tree. I'm planning on coming back again.
- 1:24:31You're the only original Bill Refs in the first day of training camp when Buster Ramsey came. It's been a long hard road and we finally made it. You must feel great.
- 1:24:39I feel like a million dollars man. After five years, finally a dream came true.
- 1:24:46What about Grandma? She must be pretty happy too.
- 1:24:48Hey let me close with my Grandma's video for all old girls. My Grandma, she's the best grandma in the world.
- 1:24:56She's really good.
- 1:24:57Jimmy B, you had a great year. Thanks for everything. A great winner.
- 1:25:01Thanks Barry, thank you very much.
- 1:25:02Butch Bird, our stellar all-star cornerback from Boston University. Butch, many times you've hit the Buffalo Bulls and you've played for Boston. You came up here and you've torn every team in the league apart. No team has been able to pick on you. Last week you said we didn't beat Boston. We stomped them. What do we do today Butch?
- 1:25:19Well we played a real hell of a game against San Diego. They've got a real fine team and I think we just outplayed them. We just got a better team.
- 1:25:26Butch, I've seen you play all during the course of the year and although you don't return a touchdown, return one for touchdown, like you did the last game against San Diego, you played a fantastic game. They couldn't do a thing against you.
- 1:25:36Thank you. This is one of my better days. The receiver I have, did Norton. He didn't get to pass all day. I was quite pleased about that. Overall I think I had a pretty good game today and I'm happy about it.
- 1:25:49Butch, it's been a long way since that August 21st practice game against Kansas City. You went to Abner Haynes at a real good day. You showed him the spirit of a great champion. You bounced back when you were down. You're a real champion all the way Butch.
- 1:26:00Thank you very much.
- 1:26:01This is Billy Shaw, the captain of the Bills. Billy, we've set everything. A great team, a great fist, a great hat. It must be fantastic.
- 1:26:08Yes, there it is. I'm glad the end is here because we've all worked hard. We're tired and ready to go home and rest until July comes again.
- 1:26:18Well, you know, maybe it's my imagination, but I think there wasn't as much enthusiasm, raw, uncanned enthusiasm in the dressing room this week as there was last week simply because we knew we had to go out and do a job. We went out and we did the job and now we're the champions. Am I right?
- 1:26:32Yes, I think so, Barry. Of course, our intergame was a little anticlimactic for us. Our real big game was last week and of course we got up for the game and did a wonderful job as far as scoring points and playing a good game. But I think the, well, I can't say that the enthusiasm was greater for the Boston game than it was for this one, but personally, I think I enjoyed the victory over Boston more than I did this one.
- 1:26:58Billy, thanks very much for everything. Have a great game in the Pro Bowl game and we'll see you next July. Thank you a lot, Barry.
- 1:27:03Jim Dunnway, the former All-American from Ole Miss, and now our second year at Tackley. You did a great job this year, Jim. You were hurt at the beginning of the year. You came through and now the big one, we certainly did the job.
- 1:27:13Thank you, sir. I'm just proud that I could come through after a little ending.
- 1:27:17Jim, was this as big a thrill as when you played for those great teams down at Ole Miss? Oh, this is a much bigger thrill here. This is for all the marbles. All the marbles we went out and we did it.
- 1:27:27That's right. I'm glad we did, too. I don't know though, I felt, I don't know, I feel more elated about the Boston game than how most of us do this one.
- 1:27:36We were just speaking about that with Billy Shaw. We won out, we played this game, we played the last one. Now with a chance, no one can take anything away from it.
- 1:27:43And I'm proud of that because it's been a long season and the whole team has held it real good and real lucky.
- 1:27:50Okay, Jim, thanks very much. We're trying to get Lou Saban, the head coach of the Buffalo Bills. He's making his way over now, being congratulated by the many, many well-wishers that are in the Buffalo dressing room.
- 1:28:03Hello. We said at the beginning of the year that Lou Saban was the type of guy that was going to stand by the courage of his convictions, that wanted to get the fans of Buffalo New York, nothing to do with the best professional football team.
- 1:28:14Whatever you did, whatever decision you had, you had this in mind. You went out there, you know, you didn't care about what people thought about Lou Saban. You thought about what you could give to the people of Buffalo.
- 1:28:23And Lou, I want to tell you how proud I am to be part of, one, as a sports cash and secondly, as the city of Buffalo and call you now a great coach. I know you don't like that word, but I don't know.
- 1:28:32I don't think that I'm a great coach. I'm perhaps a very fortunate coach. Fortunate from the point of view that Mr. Wilson's allowed me to do what I think is necessary to do.
- 1:28:41I've got a very capable staff, a trainer, equipment man, and a doctor. And these are the things that are far more important to me than a lot of the other stuff that I've heard.
- 1:28:52Plus the fact that with this young squad, this squad has done such a tremendous job, they certainly are entitled to all the benefits that go along with it.
- 1:29:02I hope that we can continue to be a top club. I think we can.
- 1:29:07Well, they said it before the year began that the Buffalo Bill could never win the big one. It seemed that week after week we always had the big one. We went out and won the ball game. This must have been hard for you to coach all these pressure ball games.
- 1:29:17Well, they had to win 13 big ones. Without, for the loss anywhere along the line, we would have been in serious trouble. And we went out and we did it.
- 1:29:24Lou, I know that during the year you chastised me a few times for using the word great. Can I now call this Buffalo Bill Club the World Champions a great club just so that the fine football came?
- 1:29:34Well, once again, thanks for everything and I want to tell you how happy I am to be associated with you and your staff.
- 1:29:40Okay, fine. Thank you, Barry. You've been fine.
- 1:29:43Thanks again, Lou.
- 1:29:44Cookie Gilchrist, the premier running back in the American football league. Cookie, you've had better days than this. You've picked up 122 yards there. That one 243 yard day.
- 1:29:52Never though have I seen you run with such reckless abandon and just run with the intent to get that championship the way you did today. A great ball game.
- 1:30:00Thanks a lot, Barry. Well, my running ability as well as any other back running ability depends greatly on the line.
- 1:30:09The line did a tremendous job of blocking today and the result, we won and I had a good day myself and everybody's happy.
- 1:30:17Cookie, your blocking today was superb. Were they boycoting you out? You had to pick up a lot of guys?
- 1:30:21Well, they didn't, but not like Boston, which my blocking, I don't think my blocking was as good as it was last week because last week I had a specific man, but today I filled in a lot, you know, on a lot of occasions.
- 1:30:34What happened? I noticed that you got injured. You came off and lost play the rest of the ball game. What actually happened?
- 1:30:40It was rib. I got a rib, I don't know, a rib separation or muscle or something and it's quite painful right now, but I think it'll be okay. I hope so.
- 1:30:49We'll keep you out of the All-Star game, won't we? I doubt it very much. If it does, I'll be down there anyway. We have a vacation well deserved.
- 1:30:57Cookie, you had a real rough year this year, the heavy incident way back after the Boston game where you were fired and then came back. Now you're back and played like a champion for the championship. What does the future hold? Do you want to play here next year, Cook?
- 1:31:09Well, I'm flexible. I feel I have a bright future whether I'm here or wherever I go, but I would like to play in Buffalo, but there's a lot of things that happened that I think we're going to have to sit down and talk about and discuss, so there won't be any reoccurrence of these things on my part as well as the management part.
- 1:31:33So I feel that the next couple of days I'm going to sit down with Mr. Wilkins and find out what their intentions are and just see.
- 1:31:43Cookie, putting things in proper perspective, how does this picture over the Chargers rank as your sports drill?
- 1:31:48Well, I didn't get a bigger drill last week when we beat Boston. You know, it was up for Boston and the momentum sort of carried on to this game, but it's a great thrill to be a champion for the AFL and all the fellows are quite as enthused as well as I am.
- 1:32:07You know, but with me, I've been playing 11 years and I just don't get as enthused as I used to get. You know, it's a sport as well as it's a job.
- 1:32:18Cookie, you did a tremendous job, not only today but for the entire season. I want to tell you one thing, I'm really proud to be associated with you. You've been very, very good to me and I want to wish you nothing but the best whether it's in Buffalo, Oakland, New York or wherever you're going to be.
- 1:32:28Thanks a lot, Barry. I'm thrilled to hear about you too.
- 1:32:30Thank you, Cook.
- 1:32:31He's a great pro innovator, a great pro innovation with his new method of kicking field goals and kicking off. Pete, your point production today topped out the entire San Diego Chargers team. You know that?
- 1:32:44Thank you, Barry. I had a pretty good day. This was an important game and we won the championship and I feel great.
- 1:32:55Greatest thrill, Pete, in your life?
- 1:32:56Just a buzz. I should say, yes, tremendous.
- 1:32:59You came a long way, Pete, not only coming from Hungary but from the Ivy League. We always kill it on a ballad, the Ivy League ballplayers couldn't play football. You kind of just proved that, didn't you?
- 1:33:07Well, I guess I did. Professional football is different than Ivy League football, I have to admit, but I guess I was lucky enough to get into pro ball and I enjoyed it all the way.
- 1:33:17How do you feel now, Pete, after this great win?
- 1:33:19Tremendous. And I tell you, Barry, this is a young club and this team has a long ways to go. I see the average age of the football team is about 25 years old and the future looks pretty good.
- 1:33:32Next year we're going to cut the rookie's hair.
- 1:33:37The American Football League Championship Game. The Bills of Luce Saban, Pro Football's Coach of the Year versus the Western Division winning San Diego Chargers.
- 1:33:5740,242 slightly apoplectic Buffalo fans turn out in standing room numbers for their first championship game and what a battle it is.
- 1:34:07The Chargers strike early. The brilliant Keith Lincoln draws up the middle for 38 yards.
- 1:34:13Quarterback Tobin Rhoade passes to end Dave Kasuric for 26 yards and the Chargers lead after 3 minutes and 11 seconds of play.
- 1:34:23The Bills can't get moving and the Chargers are on the attack again, but here's the tackle heard around the world.
- 1:34:30Keith Lincoln is hit by Mike Stratton and Lincoln is through for the day.
- 1:34:35The Chargers are shaken. Quarterback Tobin Rhoade throws right into Charlie Warner's waiting arms.
- 1:34:44The AFL's leading ground gainer, Cookie Gilchrist, cranks up. Behind Billy Shaw, Cookie turns Earl Faison's end for 32 yards.
- 1:34:54Kemp throws to Warlick to the San Diego 14.
- 1:34:58Second period, Kemp is trapped, but he spots Gilchrist on the San Diego 4.
- 1:35:06Carlton puts the Bills in front for Keith.
- 1:35:12Late in the second period, Gilchrist streaks off tackle to the Chargers 8.
- 1:35:21Pete Gogolak adds to the Bills margin with a field goal from the 17 before the half.
- 1:35:28After a doggedly fought and scoreless third period, the Bills strike again early in the fourth.
- 1:35:33Kemp hits Glen Bass on a look-in and the speedy end streaks to the 1, setting up an easy TD by Kemp.
- 1:35:41Paul McGuire puts the icing on the championship cake with this gorgeous 64-yard punt to the Chargers 2 near game's end.
- 1:35:51It's an impatient crowd that waits the final whistle to congratulate their heroes, the Buffalo Bills, champions of the American Football League for 1964.
- 1:36:03Hi, I'm Darrell Lamonica. M&T and I hope you have enjoyed the highlights of the 1964 championship season.
- 1:36:10I'm confident 1965 will be another fine year for the Bills.
- 1:36:14I think our club will be even better and that we'll defend our championship in an exciting manner.
- 1:36:19The best way to see the Bills play, and the only way when we're at home, is to be at War Memorial Stadium in person.
- 1:36:26And the easiest way to be sure of getting the best seats for every home game is by purchasing season tickets.
- 1:36:337,700 brand new seats located between the goal line will be ready in 1965.
- 1:36:40And thousands of additional choice seats will be available to new season ticket holders as well.
- 1:36:46So if you are not already a season ticket holder, there is no time like the present to join friends and neighbors who are.
- 1:36:54All you have to do is send a $10 deposit for each seat requested in a price range of your choice.
- 1:36:59$42, $31.50, $21, and the Bills will invoice you for the remainder in May.
- 1:37:07Of course, you can pay in full at the time you make application, if you so desire.
- 1:37:12Why not pick up a season ticket application form tonight before you leave?
- 1:37:17Fill it out and mail it to the Buffalo Bills ticket office, 69 West Mohawk Street.
- 1:37:23And close your $10 check or money order for each seat ordered. And you'll have no more worries about good seats in 1965.
- 1:37:31Be glad if you do.
