Speaker 1: Chapter twenty five, Pinocchio promises the fairy to be good
• 0:04
Speaker 1: and to study, as he is growing tired of being
• 0:07
Speaker 1: a marionette and wishes to become a real boy. If
• 0:12
Speaker 1: Pinocchio cried much longer, the little woman thought he would
• 0:15
Speaker 1: melt away, so she finally admitted that she was the
• 0:18
Speaker 1: little fairy with azure hair. You are a rascal of
• 0:22
Speaker 1: a marionette. How did you know it was I? She asked,
• 0:25
Speaker 1: laughing my love, for you told me who you were.
• 0:28
Speaker 1: Do you remember you left me when I was a
• 0:31
Speaker 1: little girl, and now you find me a grown woman.
• 0:34
Speaker 1: I am so old I could almost be your mother.
• 0:37
Speaker 1: I am very glad of that, for then I can
• 0:40
Speaker 1: call you mother instead of sister. For a long time
• 0:43
Speaker 1: I have wanted a mother, just like other boys. But
• 0:46
Speaker 1: how did you grow so quickly? That is a secret.
• 0:49
Speaker 1: Tell it to me. I want to grow a little.
• 0:52
Speaker 1: Look at me. I have never grown higher than a
• 0:54
Speaker 1: penny's worth of cheese. But you cannot grow, answered the fairy.
• 0:58
Speaker 1: Why not, cause marionettes never grow. They are born marionettes,
• 1:03
Speaker 1: they live marionettes, and they die marionettes. Oh, I am
• 1:08
Speaker 1: tired of always being a marionette, cried Pinocchio disgustedly. It's
• 1:12
Speaker 1: about time for me to grow into a man as
• 1:14
Speaker 1: everyone else does, and you will if you deserve it. Really,
• 1:19
Speaker 1: what can I do to deserve it? It's a very
• 1:21
Speaker 1: simple matter. Try to act like a well behaved child.
• 1:25
Speaker 1: Don't you think I do? Far from it. Good boys
• 1:28
Speaker 1: are obedient, and you on the contrary, and I never obey.
• 1:33
Speaker 1: Good boys love study and work, but you, I, on
• 1:36
Speaker 1: the contrary, am a lazy fellow and tramp all year round.
• 1:40
Speaker 1: Good boys always tell the truth, and I always tell lies.
• 1:44
Speaker 1: Good boys go gladly to school, and I get sick.
• 1:47
Speaker 1: If I go to school from now on, I will
• 1:50
Speaker 1: be different. Do you promise? I promise. I want to
• 1:54
Speaker 1: become a good boy and be a comfort to my father.
• 1:57
Speaker 1: Where is my poor father? Now? I do not know.
• 2:01
Speaker 1: Will I ever be lucky enough to find him and
• 2:02
Speaker 1: embrace him once more? I think so? Indeed, I am
• 2:06
Speaker 1: sure of it. At this answer, Pinocchio's happiness was very great.
• 2:11
Speaker 1: He grasped the fairy's hands and kissed them so hard
• 2:14
Speaker 1: that it looked as if he had lost his head. Then,
• 2:17
Speaker 1: lifting his face, he looked at her lovingly and asked,
• 2:20
Speaker 1: tell me, little mother, It isn't true that you are dead,
• 2:24
Speaker 1: is it. It doesn't seem so, answered the fairy, smiling.
• 2:28
Speaker 1: If you only knew how I suffered, and how I
• 2:30
Speaker 1: wept when I read here lies I know, and for
• 2:34
Speaker 1: that I have forgiven you. The depth of your sorrow
• 2:38
Speaker 1: made me see that you have a kind heart. There
• 2:41
Speaker 1: is always hope for boys with hearts such as yours,
• 2:44
Speaker 1: though they may often be very mischievous. This is the
• 2:47
Speaker 1: reason why I have come so far to look for you.
• 2:51
Speaker 1: From now on, I'll be your own little mother. Oh
• 2:54
Speaker 1: how lovely, cried Pinocchio, jumping with joy. You will obey
• 2:58
Speaker 1: me always and do as I wish, gladly, very gladly,
• 3:02
Speaker 1: more than gladly, beginning tomorrow, said the fairy. You'll go
• 3:06
Speaker 1: to school every day. Pinocchio's face fell a little. Then
• 3:11
Speaker 1: you will choose the trade you like best. Pinocchio became
• 3:15
Speaker 1: more serious. What are you mumbling to yourself, asked the fairy.
• 3:20
Speaker 1: I was just saying, whined the marionette in a whisper,
• 3:22
Speaker 1: that it seems too late for me to go to
• 3:24
Speaker 1: school now. No, indeed, remember it is never too late
• 3:29
Speaker 1: to learn. But I don't want either trade or profession.
• 3:33
Speaker 1: Why because work wearies me, my dear boy, said the fairy.
• 3:38
Speaker 1: People who speak as you do usually in their days,
• 3:42
Speaker 1: either in a prison or in a hospital. A man remember,
• 3:46
Speaker 1: whether rich or poor, should do something. In this world,
• 3:50
Speaker 1: no one can find happiness without work. Woe betide the
• 3:53
Speaker 1: lazy fellow. Laziness is a serious illness, and one must
• 3:58
Speaker 1: cure it immediately, yes, even from early childhood. If not,
• 4:03
Speaker 1: it will kill you in the end. These words touched
• 4:06
Speaker 1: Pinocchio's heart. He lifted his eyes to his fairy and said, seriously,
• 4:11
Speaker 1: I'll work, I'll study, I'll do all you tell me.
• 4:14
Speaker 1: After all, the life of a marionette has grown very
• 4:18
Speaker 1: tiresome to me, and I want to become a boy,
• 4:20
Speaker 1: no matter how hard it is. You promise that, do
• 4:23
Speaker 1: you not, Yes, I promise, and now it is up
• 4:28
Speaker 1: to you. End of Chapter twenty five.
