- 0:07Coming up from Yankee Stadium, the Yankees and Indians are win by the Yankees, and they are once again the American League champions.
- 0:14Right now, this is Pat Somerall inviting you to stay tuned for Yankee baseball.
- 0:19This is WCBS and WCBS-FM, New York.
- 0:24And right now, as we're ready to go, the next to the last day of the season, our national anthem.
- 0:30The Yankee National Anthem.
- 1:00The Yankee National Anthem.
- 1:29In pregame festivities at the stadium today, Yogi Berra was presented the National Sports Award by the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
- 1:40That ceremony has been concluded on the field. Downing warming up.
- 1:45Getting ready to face Chico Simone, the first baseman, and the leadoff batter.
- 1:50Al Downing has a record of 13-8 on the air. He's 1-0 against the Indians.
- 1:56He's 4-0 lifetime against Cleveland. He's never lost to this ball club.
- 2:07Howard catching. Pepitone at first. Richardson at second. Lins at short.
- 2:11Boyer at third. In the outfield and left, it's Trash. Maris in center. Mantle in right.
- 2:18Now the throw to Bobby Richardson at second.
- 2:20And we're ready to go. Chico Simone stepping in. The leadoff batter.
- 2:29Simone batting at 3-0-5. He has four home runs. 24 RBIs.
- 2:34This can be the big one for the Yankees today. They can wrap it up with a victory this afternoon against the Indians.
- 2:44All right, Al Downing into the windup. The first pitch is low and it's ball one.
- 2:541-0 the count to Simone. Downing ready again. The pitch is outside 2-0 the count.
- 3:02An absolutely clear, cloudless day here at Yankee Stadium.
- 3:07The shadow is about 10 feet past the home plate area heading toward the third base side.
- 3:14And cuts in between the batter and the pitcher. Now the pitch again is in there and it's strike one.
- 3:20This makes it hard for the hitter at this point. He's looking into a bright background.
- 3:25Sort of like you're in a tunnel looking out into the bright of the day.
- 3:30Now the 2-1 pitch is outside 3-1. Today is the kind of a day where the famous Yankee field, left field rather, the Yankee left field, runs into a lot of problems.
- 3:45Here's a 3-1 pitch. It's a strike call, 3-2.
- 3:51It's on days like this that the left fielder has most of the trouble that he may run into as far as the brightness is concerned and the sun problem.
- 4:06First batter of the ball game, the 3-2 pitch to Simone is a drive to right field. Mantle breaking back toward the barrier.
- 4:13He's got it under it and takes it. One away. Ball was not hit too far. Mantle had to run about 30 feet for it.
- 4:23Now here's Dick Hauser, the shortstop, who's batting a.252.
- 4:28Hauser with three home runs, 51 RBIs.
- 4:34Hauser leads the, oh he doesn't, I was going to say he leads the Indians and stolen bases. He has 20, D'Avilio has 21.
- 4:42The 1-0 pitch is low and it's ball one to Dick Hauser.
- 4:49Now the next pitch by Downing is in there, 1-1.
- 4:54Ed Cranepool has homered in the third inning for the Mets with two on, so it's now an 8-4 ball game at St. Louis.
- 5:02The 1-1 pitch is high, two balls and a strike.
- 5:08Boy, they've had it out there. The Mets have scored in every inning, four in the first, one in the second, now three in the third.
- 5:14They lead 8-4. Still batting in the top of the third.
- 5:20Now the 2-1 pitch to Hauser is low, 3-1. Three balls, one strike.
- 5:35One out, nobody on, just getting underway here, top of the first.
- 5:39Indians and the Yankees.
- 5:42Downing ready again, the 3-1 pitch is in there and it's strike two.
- 5:47So Downing runs a count to three and two on the second batter.
- 5:52Dick Hauser, right hand batter.
- 5:583-2 pitch is outside and he walked him.
- 6:01Hauser draws a base on ball.
- 6:05So the first baserunner of this ball game goes down to first and that will bring up Leon Wagner, the left fielder.
- 6:13Wagner, the big power man for the Indians, has 31 homers, 99 RBIs, one short of the Magic 100 mark in the RBI department.
- 6:22He's batting at 2-57.
- 6:27He sets the pitch to, wag is strike right in there.
- 6:31Old daddy wags as they call them.
- 6:35He was acquired from the Los Angeles Angels, a good trade for the Indians.
- 6:40Joe Adcock and Barry Lattman went to the Angels for Wagner.
- 6:45Here's the one strike pitch. It's swung on a miss, strike two.
- 6:51Nothing and two, one out.
- 6:53Hauser at first base, top of the first inning.
- 6:59The Yankees have this one and one more tomorrow.
- 7:03And that's all there is for the 1964 pennant race.
- 7:07And the Yankees can wrap it up by winning one of these two games or by having Chicago lose one of their two with the Kansas City A's.
- 7:20All right, Downing sets the two strike pitch, it's swung on a miss, strike three.
- 7:24A blazing fastball around the letters.
- 7:28Oh, Downing strikes out his first batter.
- 7:37Downing, with the exception of Jack Chesborough, of the Yankees going way back, has struck out more batters than any other Yankee pitcher.
- 7:48He's got 212 right now. Jack Chesborough struck out 240.
- 7:54There's a hopper over Downing's head, Lins to his left, up with a flip to Richardson in time for the force.
- 8:00So Alves, get a high hopper over Downing's head to Lins, forcing Hauser at second.
- 8:07And the side is retired.
- 8:10After half-ending of play, the Indians nothing, the Yankees coming to the plate.
- 8:21What's all this about tigers?
- 8:30Well, it all started when research people of Humble Oil and Refining Company found out how to put a tiger in SO extra gasoline.
- 8:37Of course, they call it the new power formula, but between you and me, it's a tiger.
- 8:46New power formula SO extra lets you take off like a cat, keeps your engine purring smooth because it keeps it running clean.
- 8:53Actually cleans the carburetor, helps restore lost power.
- 8:57New cars stay new longer. Older cars can get a new lease on life with new power formula SO extra from Humble Oil and Refining Company.
- 9:06So ask your SO dealer to one-cage that tiger for you. Just say, fill her up with SO extra.
- 9:15Happy motoring.
- 9:37Last half of the first inning, it'll be Phil Lins leading off for the Yankees. Lins batting a 2.47, five homers, 24 RBIs.
- 9:47Mets lead the Cardinals, 8-4 after 2.5. St. Louis batting in the bottom of the third.
- 9:53Keep you posted on that ballgame. It's a big one.
- 9:59Cincinnati and the Phillies are idle today.
- 10:02Now the pitch to Lins. It's in there. Strike one, Lee Stang, the right-hander.
- 10:12Stang has a record of 7-13 this year, acquired from the Twins for Jim Mudcat Grant.
- 10:20Curve ball, it's low, it's one-and-one.
- 10:24Johnny Romano doing the catching. Chico Simone at first, Billy Moran at second, Dick Hauser at short, Max Alves at third.
- 10:31In the outfield and left, it's Leon Wagner, Vic D'Avilio in center, Woody Held in right.
- 10:37Lee Stang on the mound, he's into the windup. Here's the one-one pitch to Phil. Foul, pass Frank Crisetti down the third base side.
- 10:44One ball, two strikes.
- 10:48Jimmy Gleason coaching at first for the Yankees, Frank Crisetti at third.
- 10:54Beautiful day, gee, it is a picture day here for baseball. About 70 degrees, not a cloud in the sky.
- 11:02The one-two pitch to Phil is hit in the right center. That ball's going to be in there.
- 11:06D'Avilio, nice backhand to staff. Lins going for second and he's in there.
- 11:14Phil Lins getting things underway with a double to right center.
- 11:21The first batter to face Lee Stang gets on. Now that'll bring up Bobby Richardson.
- 11:30D'Avilio had a little trouble breaking after he caught the ball.
- 11:35And Lins, sensing this, took off for second base and slid in well ahead of the throw.
- 11:41Alright, here's Richardson batting a 265, four homers, 49 RBI.
- 11:47Bobby has been one of the Yankees who has been doing extremely well the last six weeks during their surge.
- 11:53And he bunched one toward first. Stang has it, starts to go to third, changes his mind.
- 11:58And he's safe at first base as Chico Simone was off the bat.
- 12:03Bobby Richardson, with a burst of speed, got there ahead of Simone, although Simone had the ball.
- 12:10But just didn't get a foot on the bag in time. He had to look to see where it was.
- 12:16Now this can be excusable because Simone is normally an infielder by trade at second and short.
- 12:22And he's played some outfield. He's not too used to first base.
- 12:26Richardson is being credited with a base hit.
- 12:31Bobby gets a hit, infield single. Lins has it third, nobody out. Roger Maris the batter.
- 12:39Maris batting a 282. Swings and misses at a big curveball, strike one.
- 12:48Simone had that ball and had to reach for that bag and couldn't find it.
- 12:53Then by the time he looked and picked it up, Bobby had scampered across.
- 12:57That could be a big play.
- 13:01Stang ready again. He sets pitches. It's low in the dirt this time, one and one.
- 13:08Phil Lins with a leadoff double is now at third. Bobby Richardson with an infield single at first base.
- 13:17Last of the first inning, no score.
- 13:23Stang gets a sign, checks the runners. The pitch is outside.
- 13:29Two balls, one strike.
- 13:36Max Alves playing very shallow for Maris at third base.
- 13:47Stang sets the pitch to Roger, is in the dirt and gets by Romano, but only by about three feet.
- 13:53Lins couldn't come in, so it's three and one.
- 13:57Lee Stang falling behind Roger Maris, count three balls, one strike with Maddell on deck.
- 14:19Stang gets a sign from Romano. Richardson off first, Lins off third. The pitch to Maris is a half swing that's called ball four.
- 14:27Johnny Rice said that Roger didn't go around, so the bases are loaded and here comes Maddell.
- 14:43Mickey Maddell batting from the left side. He's hitting a 3-0-3, 35 home runs, 108 RBIs. Nobody out. Lins at third, Richardson at second, Maris at first.
- 14:57Oh, the Yankees forcing the opportunities here. The runners are leading off, Stang into the windup. The pitch to Maddell is swung on and missed and it's strike one.
- 15:12Lee Stang firing a fastball on the inside corner, right around the letters to Maddell.
- 15:25Now the pitch to Maddell is popped up down the left field line. Digging for it is Leon Wagner. That ball dropped in there for a ground rule double.
- 15:50Mickey Maddell hitting a high pop fly down the left field line, landing about five feet fair and spinning off into the stands.
- 16:01Scores Phil Lins and Bobby Richardson and the Yankees take a 2-0 lead. And that is RBI number 109 and 110 for Mickey Maddell.
- 16:13Mickey having a great year with the RBIs.
- 16:22Still nobody out. Elston Howard, the fifth batter for the Yankees, coming to the plate, Maris at third, Maddell at second.
- 16:34Ted Abernathy is warming up for the Indians in the bullpen.
- 16:46Lee Stang and they're going to put Howard on and load him up to pitch to Joe Pepitone and that's an unusual thing.
- 16:53Howard, a right-hand batter, facing the right-handed Lee Stang, they're going to pitch to the left-handed hitting Joe Pepitone.
- 17:00Howard leads the Yankees in batting with 3-12. And last night, with a base loaded and the Indians leading 2-0, Howard doubled down the left field line to tie the score.
- 17:12Bertie Tebis decides he's had enough of Mr. Howard. He's going to try for Joe Pepitone.
- 17:19Ellie, it's 3-0 now. He's batting a 3-12 with 15 homers, 81 RBIs. And ball for, and Howard is intentionally passed and still there's nobody out with the bases loaded.
- 17:40Joe Pepitone, the sixth Yankee to come to the plate. He's hitting a 2-49. 28 home runs, 99 RBIs, and here's a spot.
- 17:49How much better can it be to come up with that 100th RBI? Bases loaded, nobody out. The first pitch to Pepe is high and it's ball one.
- 18:05A fly ball, a base on balls, or a base hit, and Joe's got his 100th RBI.
- 18:12Alright, the 1-0 pitch to Pepe. Swings and misses, strike one, 1-1.
- 18:21Lee Stang, through the first five batters, walked two, gave up three hits, he's allowed two runs. Yankees lead 2-0.
- 18:30Last of the first inning. Stang ready again, the runner's leading off. The pitch to Pepitone is hopped up into the infield and it's an automatic out.
- 18:41The infield fly rule is called, and Pepitone is out of there, the runner's hold.
- 18:48That one was caught by the second baseman, Billy Moran.
- 18:56Oh, there's one out, now here's Tommy Tresh batting left-handed.
- 19:04Tresh batting at 2-49, 16 home runs, and 73 RBIs.
- 19:09Tom got the big three-run homer, gave the Yankees the ball game last night. It was 2-2 tie when he hit it.
- 19:16The Yankees got all their runs, and the third to win the game.
- 19:21First pitch is high to Tresh, it's ball one.
- 19:28Marissa third, Mantle at second, Howard at first. Two runs in.
- 19:35Stang into the windup, the pitch to Tresh is just outside 2-0.
- 19:42So Stang has now fallen behind Tresh, he's got to come in there.
- 19:47The bases are loaded, one away.
- 19:58Stang into the windup again, the runner's lead off. The pitch to Tresh is fouled off, strike one.
- 20:04Two balls and a strike to Tommy.
- 20:13Sign on the board, the American League standings. The Yankees, percentage of 613.
- 20:19The White Sox, a percentage of 600, and the Orioles, who are out of it, have a percentage of 596.
- 20:24The magic number is one.
- 20:26Pitch to Tresh is popped up into short left field, digging over as the shortstop edge of the grass takes it, and there are two out.
- 20:38So, with the bases loaded and nobody out of here, Lee Stang has muscled up.
- 20:44He has forced Pepitone to pop up, and now Tommy Tresh, and that'll bring up Cleet Boyer.
- 20:55Boyer hitting a 2-16, eight homers, 51 RBIs.
- 20:59Two out, bags loaded, Yanks lead 2-0.
- 21:06This is the eighth Yankee batter, as Stang goes into the windup. The pitch to Cleet, in there, strike one.
- 21:16After three full innings, the Mets lead the Cardinals, 8-4. They're playing in St. Louis.
- 21:23Stang ready again. The one-strike pitch to Boyer, swung on a miss, strike two.
- 21:30Tigers lead the Orioles, 2-1. After one, they're playing in Baltimore.
- 21:40Boyer, digging in there, has that straightaway stance. Chokes up about an inch and a half on the end of the bat.
- 21:48Okay, Stang ready. The two-strike pitch to Boyer, high fly ball, going back into short right center.
- 21:54Billy Moran backing up for it, gets under it, and takes it.
- 21:58So Lee Stang, really, bore down there to get Pepitone, Treschen, and Boyer.
- 22:04The side is retired. The Yankees came up with two runs on three hits, and the score after one inning of play, the Yanks two and the Indians nothing.
- 22:19Let's see if there's anything else happening on the scoreboard between the Mets and the Cardinals. No, it's still an 8-4 ball game after three.
- 22:28We mentioned the Tigers lead the Orioles 2-1 after one.
- 22:32Don't forget, tomorrow, the final game of the season will be getting underway at 1-30.
- 22:38This will be your last chance to take a look at the 1964 Yankees in action at the stadium during regular season play, I should say.
- 22:48Right now, as we've been mentioning, the Yankees, with the magic number at one, need only one victory or one White Sox loss to wrap up the fly.
- 22:59The Yankees were in good spirits before they came into the ball game.
- 23:03A host of them were huddled around the TV set, watching the Mets and the Cardinals out in St. Louis before the game got underway.
- 23:13Not too much preference among the players as to who should they get in, or would they like to play, Cincinnati or St. Louis.
- 23:22Don't forget, the Philadelphia Phillies are not out of it yet. They still have an outside chance.
- 23:28And the Giants. So, there are four teams in the National League. Giants, Phillies, Cincinnati, and St. Louis, who are still in contention.
- 23:35And this is next to the last day of the season.
- 23:43Last night, the Orioles were eliminated, and now it's between the White Sox and the Yanks.
- 23:48Now, here's John Romano, the catcher, takes a strike in there from Al Downing. Yankees leading 2-0.
- 23:57Downing with a lifetime mark of 26-14.
- 24:03Into the windup, the pitch to Romano, check swing foul, strike two.
- 24:13Joe Askew caught the game for the Indians last night. Today, it's Johnny Romano.
- 24:18Romano batting a 2-44, 19 homers, 47 RBIs. Swings and misses, and it's strike three.
- 24:27Al Downing continues to strike him out. That's his second strikeout on this ball game, and number 213 on the year.
- 24:41Now, here's Woody Held, the right fielder coming on. Held batting a 2-38. He's got 18 homeruns and 49 RBIs.
- 24:50One out, nobody on. The pitch by Downing to Held is fouled back, strike one.
- 24:59Right now, Al Downing and Camilo Pasquale are tied for the homerun lead in the American League with strikeouts, right?
- 25:13Home run? Wow, well, let's start over again. What day is it? A one-on-one to count to Woody Held.
- 25:21I'll get to that one in a moment. Held takes outside from Downing, a 2-1.
- 25:26Pasquale and Downing are tied for the strikeout lead with 213 apiece.
- 25:33That'd be quite a year if you hit 213 homers. They retire you.
- 25:40All right, the 2-1 pitch to Woody Held. Check swing, bouncer down to third base side foul to Salihimas in the coaching box.
- 25:50Elmer Velo coaching at first for the Indians. Two balls, two strikes, one away.
- 26:06Downing ready again. Here's the 2-2 pitch. It's a curveball, it's high, and it's 3-2.
- 26:13Downing has run the count to 3-2. That's the third batter in this ball game. He's done it too.
- 26:20Here's the payoff pitch. It's strike three, a swinging strike. And that is strikeout number three for Al Downing.
- 26:29214 on the season, and he now officially takes over the American League lead for strikeouts.
- 26:42Here's Vic D'Avalio, small center fielder. D'Avalio batting at 272. Six homers, 51 RBIs.
- 26:50Takes a strike in there, breaking ball. D'Avalio leads the Indians in stolen bases with 21.
- 27:03Downing ready again. Swung on and missed, and it's strike two.
- 27:08From here it looks as though the batters are really having trouble picking up Downing's fastball.
- 27:13That ball's on them as they start to go at it.
- 27:17Alright, the two-strike pitch to D'Avalio. He fouls this one into the upper deck down the left side, and it's nothing and two. The count holds.
- 27:30Red Sox lead the Senators one to nothing after one.
- 27:38Downing delivers to D'Avalio, and what is it? Ball.
- 27:44One and two to count. John Rice did not make a move. Howard dropped the ball and dashed out to tag D'Avalio.
- 27:52We thought it might have been a called third strike with Howard dropping the ball, but that was not the case.
- 28:00Alright, one ball, two strikes. Two out, nobody on. Yanks lead two to nothing, top of the second.
- 28:06Downing ready again. The pitch to D'Avalio. Hopper right back to Downing. He takes it over to Pepitone to retire the side.
- 28:14So it's three up and three down for the Indians to score. After one and a half, the Yankees two, the Indians nothing.
- 28:21Talk about high octane.
- 28:26Talk about smooth, clean performance.
- 28:34You're talking about new Power Formula SOXtra gasoline from Humble Oil and Refining Company. Puts a tiger in your tank.
- 28:47Yes, the Humble Scientists have caged up a tiger in new Power Formula SOXtra. This is the gasoline that actually helps restore lost power.
- 28:56It keeps your engine purring smooth because it keeps it running clean. Actually cleans the carburetor, neutralizes harmful engine deposits, gives your car a new lease on life.
- 29:07So see your SO dealer today and let him uncage that tiger for you. Just say, fill her up with SOXtra. Puts a tiger in your tank.
- 29:19Happy motoring.
- 29:27Let's pause right now for station identification.
- 29:31Here a double header on music of Broadway tomorrow morning, starting at 915 here on WCBS and WCBS-FM New York.
- 29:45Well, as Al Downing comes to the plate, we've got our first football score. This could be a big upset in the making.
- 29:50Holy Cross leads Syracuse 8 to nothing and Syracuse was favored by 24.
- 29:57So here's Al Downing though at the bottom of the second inning batting from the right side to face Lee Stang. He takes a strike right in there. Yankees are leading 2 to nothing.
- 30:11Mets failed to score on the top of the fourth. They lead the Cardinals 8 to 4 with St. Louis batting in the bottom of the fourth.
- 30:17Downing hits a pitch into center field, a base hit.
- 30:23He caught that one right on the end of the bat. Aligned it, not too hard, into dead center field. So Downing is on with a base hit, the lead off the bottom of the second.
- 30:36That's the fourth hit given up by Lee Stang. Now here's Phil Lenz who started the ballgame with a double to right center, later scored.
- 30:52Ted Abernathy is up again for the Indians as Stang sets checks Downing the pitch to Lenz. He bunches it behind the plate and bounces back over Romano's head.
- 31:03Strike one. Yogi with a 2 to nothing lead and wants to move another man into scoring position.
- 31:16Nice to be able to pick up a run in an inning.
- 31:21That happened this year and it's unusual. Some team in the National League, I forgot, got a run in every inning.
- 31:27Phil bunched this one up in the air way back on the screen. That one came back and hit the screen. No chance for Romano to get to it. It's nothing and 2.
- 31:44Army plays last year's number one team, Texas tonight, and Navy plays Michigan. So the two service academies from the East got a lot of football on their hands today.
- 31:59Alright, here's a two strike pitch to Lenz. It's outside. Ball one, one and two. Lenz was swinging away. Now he takes a look at Frank Crissetti to see whether or not he wants them to bun him all the way.
- 32:09Yankees leading by two, not much likelihood that he will.
- 32:16Downing leading off first.
- 32:19Stang sets the pitch to Lenz. The ground ball to the shortstop, Hauser, up with it, flips to second for one, throw to first, not in time as Lenz put on a burst of speed to beat the relay by Billy Moran.
- 32:31Downing forced at second. Lenz stays alive at first on the field, or on the force play, and that will bring up Bobby Richardson.
- 32:48Richardson had an infield single in the first inning and later scored.
- 32:53One out, Phil Lenz at first base. Last of the second.
- 33:02Stang gets the sign from Johnny Romano. Phil takes the lead. The pitch to Bobby is a curve that doesn't make the inside corner and it's ball one.
- 33:31Throw over to first base and Lenz is back.
- 33:37Lee Stang acquired from the twins for Jim Mudcat Grant.
- 33:45Here's the 1-0 pitch to Bobby, strike called, one and one.
- 33:50We've got quite an interesting setup coming along in the National League. If the Giants should win today
- 33:57and St. Louis lose, four teams in the National League will be separated by one game.
- 34:12Bobby takes a strike right in there, one and two. How do you like that?
- 34:19The Giants and the Phillies would be one out. St. Louis and Cincinnati tied for the lead.
- 34:28And it ends tomorrow.
- 34:32Of course, that's supposition right now. Here's the 1-2 pitch to Richardson.
- 34:36Drops one into left center, digging for Wagner, can't get it. Lenz around second holds as Wagner fires the ball into Max Alvarez.
- 34:45Bobby just stuck out his bat and dropped one. It was like a chip shot really.
- 34:50Looping it over the shortstop's head into left center. So that's Bobby's second hit.
- 34:55The Yankees have runners at first and second and here's Roger Maris who walked in the first inning.
- 35:07That's the fifth hit off Stang.
- 35:11Stang has been in trouble in both innings. Pitched to eight batters in the first, gave up two runs.
- 35:17Now he's got runners at first and second with one out. Maris the batter, mantle on deck.
- 35:26Outfield plays Maris deep and the pull. Infield shaded to the right side.
- 35:31Roger fouls this one back on the screen and it's strike one.
- 35:54Stang gets a sign, he sets, checks the runners. A pitch to Maris is way inside. It's one and one.
- 36:09Well from August 22nd the Yankees hitched up their britches and took off.
- 36:14And right now they're one victory away from the 1964 Pennant.
- 36:21A real team effort in the last six and a half weeks. Pitch to Maris, swung on and missed strike two. One and two.
- 36:39Kind of a bubbly crowd out here today. Sort of a soft murmur. Things moving right along.
- 36:46Feel the excitement. Alright, Stang ready. The one, two, pitch to Roger is swung on and missed and it's strike three.
- 36:55Lee Stang striking out Roger Maris for the second out in this inning.
- 37:03That's his first strike out of the ball game and that'll bring out Mickey Mantle.
- 37:08Mantle with an opposite field double in the first has driven in the only two runs for the Yankees thus far. They lead two to nothing.
- 37:22Lins at second, Richardson at first. Two of the fastest Yankees on the base as Mantle takes low and inside, ball one.
- 37:34Mickey with 110 RBIs on the air batting at 305.
- 37:49Two out, runners leading off again.
- 37:52Stang, a double look at Lins at second, pitches to Mantle, a high hopper to the mound. Stang has it. Flips in time to Simone and the Yankees are out of there.
- 38:02No runs on two hits and the score after two full innings of play, the Yankees two and the Indians nothing.
- 38:09Camel time. It's camel time, camel time. It's pleasure time for you. Camel time is any time when nothing less will do. Things all seem to brighten up every time you light one up.
- 38:33Right now make it camel time. Have a camel cigarette.
- 38:40The best tobacco makes the best smoke. Camel gives you easy going taste, honest enjoyment, choice quality tobaccos. The exclusive camel blend of costly tobaccos has never been equal. The best tobacco makes the best smoke.
- 38:56Right now make it camel time. Have a camel cigarette.
- 39:14Here's Billy Moran, the second baseman for the Indians leading off here in the top of the third with the Yankees leading two to nothing. Al Downing in there all the way for the Yankees. Lee Stang for the Indians.
- 39:29Billy Moran, right hand batter. He was acquired from the Los Angeles Angels earlier this year.
- 39:36First pitch is a strike right in there.
- 39:39Downing with that good fastball has been giving the Indian batters a lot of trouble. Got that shadow about at the mound right now. There's a curve ball that's down one and one.
- 39:55We mention this because it is a factor. Pitchers with good stuff can give batters a lot of trouble here with the shadows as they are right now. They're about at the mound halfway between home and third.
- 40:07Two balls and a strike.
- 40:18Al Downing into the wind up the 2-1 pitch is low and it's three and one in St. Louis with the Cardinals batting. In the last of the fourth they've got the bases loaded and two out.
- 40:29They're right to four right now. They are really having a Donny Brook out there. All right the 3-1 pitch to Moran. It's strike two.
- 40:42Full count to Billy Moran.
- 40:48Al Downing 13 and eight on the air. Gets the side from Ellie Howard into the wind up. The pitch is just outside and he walked him.
- 40:57So that's the second walk given up by Downing. Lee Stang is the scheduled batter and is he going to come up? Yep.
- 41:07Yanks lead the Indians two to nothing. They've got five hits. The Indians hit us at this point. We're in the top of the third.
- 41:26All right Downing sets the pitch to Stang. A beautiful bunt out by the mound. Downing has to go to first. Oh almost threw it away.
- 41:36Bobby Richardson had to jump as high as he could go to come up with that one.
- 41:41A beautiful sacrifice by Stang.
- 41:45Downing throwing a high one to Bobby. Richardson came up with it on the play. Moran goes to second.
- 41:53Now this will bring up Chico Simone the leadoff batter who fly to right field in the first.
- 42:03Downing with the sign. Moran leading off second. The pitch to Simone. A hopper. Lins to his left. Can't get it.
- 42:08And here comes Moran. A round third base and it's a two to one ball game. And there was a strange bounce on that ball.
- 42:16Was going at a bounding point where Lins was going to catch up with it. And at the last bounce before Lins could field it, it kicked back toward the right field side and went straight into center.
- 42:29So Simone gets himself a base hit and an RBI. And it's now the Yankees two and the Indians one. We were directly behind the plate and we could see that ball take that odd kick away from Lins's glove.
- 42:43Here's Hauser. Takes a strike right in there. Simone at first base. Chico a fast man. Got himself ten stolen bases in 84 games.
- 42:58That was the first base hit off Al Downing. And Downing throws over to first base to keep Simone honest.
- 43:08Downing has developed a pretty good move with the help of Whitey Ford who's got them all.
- 43:14All right. The one strike pitch is hit hard to left field. That ball's in there.
- 43:18Fresh gets it on the first hop. Simone digging for third and he is out of there.
- 43:26The plate umpire made the call as Larry Knapp was behind the play. He was down the line.
- 43:34And coming out from the plate was John Rice. Rice was about 30 feet from the play and called it at a distance.
- 43:42But he had the good look at it. And Bertie Tebbits is out talking to John Rice.
- 43:48So that's a big break for the Yankees. Now they've got two outs with a runner at second instead of one out and runners at second and third.
- 43:56That ball went from Tresh to Lins to Boyer. They're giving Hauser credit for a double.
- 44:07Simone out on the relay from Tresh to Lins to Boyer. Seven six five.
- 44:16Hauser is at second base with two out. That's the second hit off Downing. Two to one ball game.
- 44:23Yankees lead. Now here is Leon Wagner who's struck out in the first.
- 44:30Swings at the first pitch and he tried to stop but couldn't. Strike one to Wagner.
- 44:39Well the Cardinals failed to score. Parsons came on in relief and retired the Cardinals.
- 44:45There were the bases loaded and two out so it's still eight to four after four.
- 44:48Wagner hopper to Pepitone at first. He's got it. Races to the bag and the side is retired.
- 44:56One run on two hits. No Yankee errors. One man left the score after two and a half.
- 45:02Yanks two and the Indians one.
- 45:05Valentine's beer, Valentine's beer.
- 45:09You wrap your hand around an icy cold glass of it. Valentine's beer, Valentine's beer.
- 45:16You taste it crisp, clean, refreshing. Valentine's beer, Valentine's beer.
- 45:22Won't fill you up, won't let you down.
- 45:27You get a smile every time with a Valentine. Won't fill you up, won't let you down.
- 45:37The crisp, clean taste of a Valentine. Won't fill you up, won't let you down.
- 45:50So get a smile every time with a Valentine. Won't fill you up, won't let you down.
- 46:00Wow, what a beer. That Valentine.
- 46:13Okay, here comes Ellie Howard and we've got a change from the official score.
- 46:17Dick Hauser is now credited with a single and not a double as we originally announced.
- 46:23All right, Howard, who was passed intentionally in the first inning, comes to the plate.
- 46:32Lee Stang into the windup. The pitch to Ellie is low and it's ball one.
- 46:36Yankees two and the Indians one. We're in the last of the third.
- 46:40Howard batting at 3-12.
- 46:48Stang ready again to pitch to Ellie. Shot up the middle base hit.
- 46:55Line drive right past the shoulder of Lee Stang.
- 46:59So the Yankees get the leadoff batter on again for the third inning in a row.
- 47:04The first lens doubled and the second downing single to lead it off.
- 47:08And now here's Ellie Howard in the bottom of the third with a single to center.
- 47:12That is hit number six off Stang and that'll bring up Joe Pepitone,
- 47:16who popped to the second baseman in the first inning.
- 47:24Dick Donovan and Ted Abernathy warming up for the Indians.
- 47:28Stang sets the pitch to Pepitone, is swung on and missed and it's strike one.
- 47:36There's one thing about Lee Stang, he has put in a long day right now and we're only in the bottom of the third.
- 47:43Eight men in the first inning, five in the second and the leadoff batter on here in the third.
- 47:51Stang delivers, the ball gets by the catcher. Johnny Romano down to second is Howard.
- 47:57The big sweep around second but he holds.
- 48:07The wild pitch is charged to Lee Stang.
- 48:14So with nobody out, Howard is now at second base.
- 48:18A 1-1 count to Pepitone.
- 48:21The Yankees two, Indians one, last to the third.
- 48:28After three, Detroit two and the Orioles two, they're playing a Baltimore.
- 48:34Now Stang sets the pitch to Pepitone fouled off.
- 48:39One ball, two strikes. Kansas City and Chicago playing at Chicago are scoreless after one.
- 48:49O'Donoghue and Horlan, John O'Donoghue the left-hander and Joel Horlan the right-hander are opposing each other in that Kansas City Chicago game.
- 49:01Alright, Stang sets the one-two pitch to Pepitone. Up the middle, nice stop by Hauser but he can't throw anybody out.
- 49:09That ball went right through Stang's legs.
- 49:12Hauser darting behind second base, caught the ball and then fell down.
- 49:16And that'll go as a base hit for Pepitone.
- 49:20So the Yankees have two men on and no one out. Howard stayed at second base.
- 49:24That'll bring up Tommy Trash.
- 49:38Alright, Tom Trash. Popped to the shortstop in the first inning. He's 0-1.
- 49:45Yankees with runners at first and second.
- 49:48Stang sets this time. The pitch to Trash is swung on and missed and it's strike one.
- 49:58Well, Charlie Smith is homered for the Mets in the top of the fifth and now it's 9-4 at least with the Mets batting in the top of the fifth inning.
- 50:12Stang ready. The pitch to Tom is low in the dirt, one-and-one. Nice block by John Romano.
- 50:22The way that situation is developing in St. Louis, the Mets will have to become the most unpopular team of all time as far as the Cardinals are concerned.
- 50:33Beat them last night 1-0 in a thriller. They lead 9-4 in the fifth inning today.
- 50:43Stang sets the one-one pitch to Trash. It's swung on and missed and it's strike two. One ball, two strikes.
- 50:50Boyer on deck, nobody out. Howard at second, Pepitone at first. Yankees leading 2-1. We're in the bottom of the third.
- 51:03Stang stretches, checks Howard at second. The pitch to Tommy is foul down the left field side, out of play. Count remains one ball, two strikes.
- 51:25Final game of the season tomorrow between these two ball clubs here at the stadium. Game time 1-30.
- 51:33Now I'll wrap up the 1964 pennant race.
- 51:39All right, Stang gets the sign from Romano. The pitch on the way to Trash is outside, a high fastball, two and two.
- 52:03Stang once again. Here's the 2-2 pitch to Trash, just outside a full count.
- 52:12Well, the Cardinals in the fifth inning have already used five pitchers. The Mets have used four and it looks like a battle for manpower right now.
- 52:21Whoever has the most men at the end will win.
- 52:25That's going to be a big ball game for the Cardinals. Boy, that could change the entire complexion of this National League race.
- 52:34Pay off pitch, the runners are going. There's a drive to straightaway center, D'Avalio. Plenty of room and he can move his back.
- 52:40He gets it. Howard goes back to tag up and will go on to third base. That ball was hit 410 feet in dead center field.
- 52:49Howard and Pepitone were going on the pitch and then Howard stopped and went all the way back and tagged and then moved over to third.
- 52:58So Trash, the long fly to center, he's out of there. There's one away. Howard is at third, Pepitone at first.
- 53:04The batter is Cleet Boyer. Yankees leading 2-1, last of the third inning.
- 53:10And now Romano is out to talk to Lee Stang.
- 53:15Stang is pitching one of those games. He's been in hot water in every inning.
- 53:23Yeah, the base is loaded.
- 53:27In the first inning, Mantle doubled. Then they walked Howard, he had him loaded again with nobody out all through this.
- 53:32And finally, he got Pepitone, Trash and Boyer on pop-ups to retire the side. But he was in a jam then. He gave up only two runs.
- 53:40Pitched to five batters in the second inning. He got runners at first and third with one out here in the third.
- 53:52Boyer the batter. Stang gets the sign. He sets the pitch. It's a ground ball to third. Into left field, base hit.
- 54:00Howard in to score. Pepitone stops at second and it's a 3-1 ball game.
- 54:07We thought Max Alves might have had a shot at that ball, but it just tipped his glove and sneaked into left field.
- 54:15So Boyer gets credit for a single and an RBI. And the Yankees lead 3-1. And that will bring up Al Downing.
- 54:22Downing had a leadoff single in the second inning. That is hit number eight off Stang.
- 54:32Yanks three, Indians one, bottom of the third, one out. Pepitone at second, Boyer at first.
- 54:38They're looking for the sacrifice, but Downing swings and it's strike one.
- 54:44Alves was creeping in. Simone at first, playing away in.
- 54:51So Downing took a swipe at the ball. Now let's see what happens this time.
- 54:58Indian in field still playing shallow, looking for a possible bunt. Downing swings at this one and it's strike two.
- 55:04Nothing and two to count. Now Al takes a look at Frank Presetti. Steps back in the box.
- 55:24Stang sets the two-strike pitch. Strike three, call. Hit that outside corner.
- 55:29That is strikeout number two for Stang. Now to bring up Phil Linds, who doubled in the first inning.
- 55:37Bounced the short in the second. He's one for two. Linds scored a run in the first.
- 55:55Two out, runners at first and second. Lee Stang, fairly compact right-hander on the mound for the Indians.
- 56:04Delivers and Phil swings and misses and it's strike one.
- 56:15Kansas City failed to score on the top of the second. Chicago batting in the bottom of the second.
- 56:20No score in that ballgame. Linds fouls this one off and it is nothing and two.
- 56:27No balls, two strikes to Phil Linds. Bobby Richardson on deck.
- 56:37With the Cardinals batting in the bottom of the fifth, the Mets came up with one in the top of the fifth.
- 56:43It's the Mets nine and the Cardinals four.
- 56:48Charlie Smith hit a home run in the fifth inning to give the Mets another one.
- 56:56All right, Pepitone off second. Boyer off first.
- 57:00Stang sets a two-strike pitch to Linds and that ball was thrown over Linds' head,
- 57:05past the catcher and hit the bat stop on a fly.
- 57:09That had to be one of the best wild pitches you'll ever see.
- 57:13That ball was two and a half feet over Linds' head and really got away from Lee Stang.
- 57:21It hit the backstop, which is 75 to 80 feet behind home plate on a fly.
- 57:28So it's one ball, two strikes and the runners move up.
- 57:31Pepitone goes to third. Boyer to second.
- 57:36That was rather startling because of how far off the target it was.
- 57:42Now we're ready. Here's the one-two pitch. Swung on and missed. Strike three.
- 57:46That one, a letter high fastball. That takes care of the Yankees.
- 57:50But not before they came up with one run on three hits.
- 57:55And the score after three full innings of play, it's the Yankees three and the Indians one.
- 58:01The next portion of this ball game will be brought to you by the makers of Camel Cigarettes.
- 58:06Camel gives you easygoing taste, honest enjoyment, choice quality tobaccos.
- 58:12The best tobacco makes the best smoke. Make it Camel time, right now.
- 58:19Okay, as we get ready for the fourth inning with the Yankees leading three to one,
- 58:32here's the old redhead, Red Barber, to take you along for a while.
- 58:35Now Jerry, just what have you told them so I won't repeat?
- 58:38Well, I've tried to tell them just about everything.
- 58:40I've stayed on top of that National League action and of course the action in Chicago
- 58:44with the Kansas City A's and the White Sox going at it.
- 58:47So we've tried to keep abreast of the two pennant races.
- 58:50We did mention one thing that's startling.
- 58:52If the Mets win and the Giants win, four teams will be separated by one game
- 58:57going into the final game tomorrow in the National League.
- 59:00You think there's any chance of a four-way playoff?
- 59:03No, not there because Cincinnati and Philadelphia, somebody's got to fall.
- 59:06They play each other.
- 59:10All right, Jerry.
- 59:14Well, we've got a mighty pretty day for this big ball game here at the Big Ball Park.
- 59:18Al Downing for the second time has a two-run lead.
- 59:22He is ready to pitch now in the fourth inning to Max Alves, the third baseman,
- 59:26hitting number four and Tebbit's batting order, then Romano and then Harold.
- 59:32Young left-hander going after his 14th win.
- 59:35This is the third time he's tried for it.
- 59:38He's won an O over Cleveland this year.
- 59:40He's never lost to him in his short career.
- 59:42He has four in a lifetime.
- 59:44First pitch is over to Alves for a called strike.
- 59:47Max hit into a force at second base in the first inning.
- 59:513-1.
- 59:52Think of the Yankees.
- 59:53Think and win it.
- 59:54It's all theirs.
- 59:56Change of pace, grounded foul between third base and the coaches, Salahimas.
- 1:00:00Kicking down into the left-field corner where Tresh has to run it down.
- 1:00:04Ball even kicked past him.
- 1:00:07Two strikes.
- 1:00:13We really got the wheels turning today.
- 1:00:32We're going to be busy from now on.
- 1:00:33You know, the football score is coming in.
- 1:00:34End of the quarter, Purdue 7, Notre Dame nothing.
- 1:00:39Pitch is low for a ball.
- 1:00:41At the end of the quarter, Northwestern and Illinois, no score.
- 1:00:51Detroit has just come up with four runs down at Baltimore.
- 1:00:55One-two pitch.
- 1:00:56High outside ball two.
- 1:00:58Baltimore's problem is a hope to take second place from the White Sox.
- 1:01:02They were eliminated by the Yankees when last evening.
- 1:01:09It is Detroit 6 and Baltimore 2 and a three and a half and they got Papas out of there.
- 1:01:15Strike three, low curve ball.
- 1:01:19And now Downing strikes out his fourth.
- 1:01:21He's the top man in the league in strikeouts.
- 1:01:23He has 215 to Pasquale's 213.
- 1:01:27And Downing may wind up as the strikeout leader this year in the American League because Pasquale pitched Thursday.
- 1:01:34And I would think that he wouldn't be pitching anymore this season.
- 1:01:42Now we have Romano who struck out in the second inning.
- 1:01:47I mean, you have to watch Pasquale's arm for one thing.
- 1:01:51He likes his full cop with a rest.
- 1:01:53So Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
- 1:01:54In other words, it's not like they're fighting for a penalty or something.
- 1:01:58Bringing back on two days rest.
- 1:02:02End of three innings of the Boston 1 Washington nothing.
- 1:02:05And the new manager Billy Herman is running the Red Sox.
- 1:02:09He has a two-year contract.
- 1:02:11This is his second shot at managing.
- 1:02:13He waited 17 years for it.
- 1:02:15A curve ball in there.
- 1:02:18Strike two, one and two.
- 1:02:20Romano right hander badger.
- 1:02:22Across the river.
- 1:02:24Herman right after he finished his active career as a play on managed the power for a season.
- 1:02:29And he said in his interview at Boston yesterday that he was young then and experienced.
- 1:02:34But he's been learning about his mistakes for the waiting 17 years.
- 1:02:38Strike three swinging on a curve ball.
- 1:02:40So Downing now strikes out the first two and the fourth inning holding his three one lead.
- 1:02:47Five for the day to 16 for the season.
- 1:02:52Pete Ward just hit a home run for the White Sox.
- 1:02:55And they lead one to nothing at the end of two innings in their battle with Kansas City.
- 1:02:58Or Donahue for the A's and Haaland for the White Sox.
- 1:03:04LA at Minnesota later.
- 1:03:10The Mets are really making life miserable.
- 1:03:14Got a run in the fifth inning.
- 1:03:16And they're leading now nine to four.
- 1:03:20What a hell fouls a pitch back and it is one and one one ball one strike.
- 1:03:25Smith of the Mets hit that home run in the fifth.
- 1:03:28Altman hit one in the second Crane Bowl with two on hit one in the third.
- 1:03:34White and Boyer have hit home runs for the Cardinals.
- 1:03:40Change up his other for a strike two.
- 1:03:43In the Mets St. Louis game Fisher began for New York.
- 1:03:47Right but in the second and Parsons in the fourth.
- 1:03:51Sadecki who had one 20 began for St. Louis Craig in the second inning Richardson in the third.
- 1:03:56Hope was in the fourth.
- 1:03:57Strike three swinging and I'm Mr. Downing just simply sets down the side.
- 1:04:03Strikes it out.
- 1:04:05That's all I want to that three case the book and for the Yankees driving to nail it down themselves.
- 1:04:12The end of three and a half New York three and Cleveland one.
- 1:04:17While the teams exchange positions on the field let's take time out and declare a time for a camel the best tasting cigarette of them all.
- 1:04:26Yes sir the exclusive camel blend of costly tobaccos has never been equal.
- 1:04:32Camel gives you easy going taste honest enjoyment choice quality tobaccos.
- 1:04:38The best tobacco makes the best smoke.
- 1:04:41So make it camel time for you camel time is any time when nothing less than a camel will do.
- 1:04:48So light up lean back and smile things all seem to brighten up every time you light one up.
- 1:04:56Discover what we mean when we say camel time is pleasure time.
- 1:05:02Make it camel time right now.
- 1:05:06Right now make it camel time.
- 1:05:10Now the camel cigarette.
- 1:05:23We are at this juncture we will pause for station identification.
- 1:05:27You're a Broadway doubleheader during music of Broadway starting tomorrow morning at 915 here on WCBS and WCBS FM New York.
- 1:05:37Lee Stang makes his first pitch a high lead up to Bobby Richardson as we move into the last of the fourth inning.
- 1:05:43Stanger right hander has won seven and 13 this season.
- 1:05:47He was dealt up to the curtain lifted you know from the twins to the Indians.
- 1:05:53All back.
- 1:05:55Boom.
- 1:05:57Right over there and Jerry Coleman's Bellavick he moved over there on TV.
- 1:06:07Richardson is a ground ball short.
- 1:06:13How's that.
- 1:06:14Oh what a first to some on and Richardson is out.
- 1:06:18Bobby had gone up there too.
- 1:06:20Now I have one out last in the fourth.
- 1:06:22Yankee leading three to one.
- 1:06:27There is Maris was walking fan.
- 1:06:36They're defending well around at the right.
- 1:06:42The first pitch is at a coaching at third Jimmy Gleason at first Roger hits a ground ball slowly to the pitcher who runs over the first base he intercepted the ball halfway between the mound and first base.
- 1:06:55Marissa down to down and here is battle with the base is loaded.
- 1:07:04Lens open with a double the right center.
- 1:07:06He's got a lot of space to get out of a base hit.
- 1:07:12Actually he didn't beat it out so much.
- 1:07:14He's hustling all the time as someone who is an inexperienced first baseman got his feet crossed out.
- 1:07:20In other words he tried to do the buck and wing and he didn't get the wing on it.
- 1:07:25Mannequin.
- 1:07:27He just missed touching first base with his foot and Richardson didn't.
- 1:07:34He's got a double down inside the left field line ground rule double and the Yankees got their first two in the third inning a single by Howard a wild pitch and a single ground foul by Boya got the third run in two strikes to Mickey
- 1:07:54Madeline batting in those two kicked his RBI is up to 110 which is a good year's work.
- 1:08:05Lee Stang
- 1:08:09pitches inside close to the handball.
- 1:08:13Three to one favor New York Yankee number is one.
- 1:08:21The Yankees themselves eliminated Baltimore last night.
- 1:08:24They're out to eliminate Chicago today.
- 1:08:27Pitches wide out of this to and to
- 1:08:34at the end of five innings.
- 1:08:36It is still the Mets nine and the Cardinals for
- 1:08:41manager Kane isn't holding anybody back except the starting pitcher for tomorrow.
- 1:08:47The Yankees are in the fourth inning and the Cuts in strikes out without a slider.
- 1:08:53So for strikeouts for staying nothing across to New York.
- 1:08:59And at the end of form they totals for the Yankees three runs eight hits and no errors for the Indians one run to his nowhere.
- 1:09:06Now let's give you a little bit more detail on the battle of the Mets out at St. Louis.
- 1:09:15The Yankees are in the second and Parsons in the fourth and he's still going and for the Mets all in a home run on the second
- 1:09:21Crane for one of the third with two on and Smith one in the fifth with nobody on
- 1:09:27so that gave the 20 game winner for St. Louis fully rested went out there and bang Roger Craig replaced him in the second
- 1:09:34Richardson in the third Humphreys in the fourth Taylor in the fifth and Sierra in the sixth.
- 1:09:40That's what I mean when I say that Kane is holding nobody back when you get to this stage you can't hold anybody back.
- 1:09:46I would say there's only one ballplayer in the park at the stadium today who is not going to get in the ballgame.
- 1:09:55And that's why before it was last night and they're counting on it for Wednesday.
- 1:09:59Otherwise Yogi would use them all.
- 1:10:02And of course Tevitz has got nobody to hold back.
- 1:10:14Chicago San Francisco will be quite late.
- 1:10:17It's an afternoon game three hours difference in time.
- 1:10:21It is Detroit six Baltimore two at the end of form.
- 1:10:27And the three the Red Sox under their new manager Billy Herman for Washington nothing.
- 1:10:33And it to the White Sox one the athletics.
- 1:10:37The first pitch is a move into the fifth inning.
- 1:10:40Vic D'Avalillo up the very small left hand hitting center fielder.
- 1:10:45Stand right up on top of the plate especially forward foot's foul ball strike one.
- 1:10:54A fly ball out to left center field Maris is going sunglasses down he's going in one hand.
- 1:11:06He's a pretty competent customer out there you know.
- 1:11:15Now we have Billy Moran.
- 1:11:21At least Lang gets out on deck whether he hits or not remains to be seen.
- 1:11:24I mean Tevitz went to his bench early last night.
- 1:11:34Al Downing pitching for the Yankees.
- 1:11:40He's had a hit today and that means he's two up on bouton in the battle to see who's going to have the most hits for Yankee pitcher.
- 1:11:47There is a looper that Richardson's coming in makes the catch.
- 1:11:51To put out a second by.
- 1:11:55Now let's see is it going to be a pitcher staying.
- 1:11:59Yes sacrifice in the third inning.
- 1:12:04But we'll have a chance.
- 1:12:07He pitches tomorrow.
- 1:12:09Mara ball game which brings down the curtain at 130.
- 1:12:24They want pets in their first strike.
- 1:12:27That was very interesting last night.
- 1:12:33White Sox of course playing a double header and nobody here at the stadium knew.
- 1:12:40When the Yankee game was over they'd won and the White Sox won the first what the second game was going to be.
- 1:12:45In fact the athletics even got it tied for four if you recall.
- 1:12:50They sang up swings and fouled it.
- 1:12:53And they were the first to take two. So we checked with the writers and if you think you've got bad hours the newspaper man had to stay here and wait until the second game in Chicago was over before they could write their story.
- 1:13:10There's a ground ball down the short lens over to Pemmetone.
- 1:13:15That is the third out second straight inning down and put them down in order.
- 1:13:22But at the end of four and a half it's an official ballgame.
- 1:13:26The Yankees three and the Indians one.
- 1:13:31Camel time.
- 1:13:36It's camel time camel time it's pleasure time for you.
- 1:13:42Camel time is any time when nothing less will do.
- 1:13:47Things all seem to brighten up.
- 1:13:50Every time you like one up right now.
- 1:13:58The best tobacco makes the best smoke.
- 1:14:01Camel gives you easy going taste honest enjoyment choice quality tobacco.
- 1:14:06The exclusive camel blend of costly tobacco has never been equal.
- 1:14:10The best tobacco makes the best smoke.
- 1:14:13Right now.
- 1:14:18Right now they get camel time.
- 1:14:22Have a camel cigarette.
- 1:14:35Least thing is getting all set to pitch to Howard.
- 1:14:38Elston is one for one today. He was deliberately walked in the first inning.
- 1:14:42The Yankees on top three to one.
- 1:14:44When Howard single in the third he was later brought into the Yankees third run which is a big one.
- 1:14:52The defense is straight away on Ellie.
- 1:14:57Pitch it outside ball one.
- 1:15:02Here are some of the writers who had to wait until that second game in Chicago was over.
- 1:15:06And the loneliness of a press room here at the stadium.
- 1:15:12In first strike.
- 1:15:14And you know a lonely place in a major league ballpark with all the lights out at two three o'clock in the morning.
- 1:15:22And the kitchen is closed.
- 1:15:24Everything else is closed except the facility the Western Union and the telephone company.
- 1:15:28Howard cuts on the curve.
- 1:15:30Tommy Holmes of the Herald Tribune read his story this morning.
- 1:15:34He got to bed later than you did.
- 1:15:36Then a copy to the Times Joe Trimble of the News Jack hand to the AP.
- 1:15:42Kim Moriarty of the UPI.
- 1:15:44Tilber Denzi of the Journal American.
- 1:15:46Larry Fox of the World Telegram.
- 1:15:48Maury Allen of the Post.
- 1:15:50Howard McWide ball two.
- 1:15:55Bob Curlin of the Beacon Record.
- 1:15:58Bill Quinn of the Newark News.
- 1:16:00Jim Ogle of the Newark Star Legend.
- 1:16:03John Drebbinger of the Yankees remained.
- 1:16:05You know just to see that everything was quiet and peaceful.
- 1:16:08Howard strikes out on a curve strike three.
- 1:16:12Five strikeouts for staying.
- 1:16:14Also there were three Western Union operators who had to remain down in the press room.
- 1:16:19So while you are having a cup of coffee this morning and reading your paper.
- 1:16:26Some fellows had to prop their eyelids up.
- 1:16:34Now I have Joe Puppetoe one for two.
- 1:16:42Joe takes a pitch curve in for a strike.
- 1:16:48Bam around in the right.
- 1:16:50The standard batter swings and grounds a foul back in the first base coach Jimmy Gleason.
- 1:17:01Speaking of our fellow stand up late last night.
- 1:17:05What I heard on the radio this morning.
- 1:17:08There was some fellows that were getting up at the time these riders were going to bed.
- 1:17:12Around three three thirty.
- 1:17:14They must have been.
- 1:17:20Pitches high inside.
- 1:17:21Pepperdome hung up there a little late.
- 1:17:22They might be a curve and it was a fastball and he had to drop.
- 1:17:25Well I'm saying that I heard on the radio before seven o'clock this morning.
- 1:17:31A fellow was given a rundown on the waiting time on a public golf courses around New York City.
- 1:17:40Hi outside.
- 1:17:42And he said.
- 1:17:44And this is just before seven o'clock this morning.
- 1:17:47And what I'm doing listening to the radio at seven o'clock.
- 1:17:49I don't know.
- 1:17:50I'm not interested in this kind of race or anything else.
- 1:17:52He said anywhere from an hour and a quarter to two hours waiting time then.
- 1:18:01To do a pitch swung on to the ground ball down to second.
- 1:18:05Ran over the first to someone and Pepperdome is out.
- 1:18:09And I came to the firm conviction and I've had it all day long.
- 1:18:14And if it's seven o'clock in the morning fellows were already having to wait two hours to play golf.
- 1:18:20There must be something to the enterprise.
- 1:18:27Now we've got Tommy Tresh who is over to thank you for getting three to one.
- 1:18:34Tres running.
- 1:18:36I've had it takes on the outside ball one.
- 1:18:40The Yankees had a chance to get a croaker sack full of runs in the first inning.
- 1:18:43They had to end.
- 1:18:48Had the bases loaded and nobody out and then staying got three infield pop ups.
- 1:18:54Brown foul by the first base.
- 1:18:58John Stevens down there and umpire makes the stop ball kicked out.
- 1:19:02Rice at the plate. Stevens at first.
- 1:19:04Valentine at second and map at third base.
- 1:19:16I outside just think about these umpires are off season.
- 1:19:19Stevens is a tough basketball official in the winter.
- 1:19:22And Larry Mapp used to be a tough fight referee.
- 1:19:28Championship fights at the garden he did.
- 1:19:33Fall back.
- 1:19:35You've all to strike.
- 1:19:42And the four and a half innings it is Detroit six Baltimore two.
- 1:19:47And the three and a half Boston for Washington nothing.
- 1:19:51And the two Chicago one nothing over Kansas City.
- 1:19:54But the A's have been about a long time in the third inning.
- 1:20:00Fresh checks on our low inside curve ball three.
- 1:20:04And the five and a half.
- 1:20:05The Mets nine and the Cardinals four.
- 1:20:10The Mets are going to play later Milwaukee.
- 1:20:12Chicago San Francisco.
- 1:20:14Houston LA.
- 1:20:16Philadelphia Cincinnati is not scheduled.
- 1:20:20Strike three swinging he went after the curve ball and slangs at the Yankees down.
- 1:20:24In order for the second straight round.
- 1:20:26Total at the end of five.
- 1:20:29Three runs.
- 1:20:30Eight hits no arrows for New York.
- 1:20:32One run two hits and no arrows for Cleveland.
- 1:21:02Reserved seats.
- 1:21:07And after today's game.
- 1:21:10At the stadium.
- 1:21:12Dallas.
- 1:21:42Now a moment ending six and we have the top of the other Chico Samon one hit single to
- 1:21:51The middle in the third and that's not in Cleveland's tally.
- 1:21:55Downing had walked Moran Richard sacrificed him over and Samon picked him up.
- 1:22:02Yankees on top three to one.
- 1:22:06Outside first pitch ball one.
- 1:22:08The Yankees have beaten the Indians 14 out of 16 games this year.
- 1:22:13Bertie Tabot says it's indecent.
- 1:22:16That's his exact quote.
- 1:22:17Pitch is high outside ball two.
- 1:22:19I'll say this that the Cleveland club can blame the Yankees for this year.
- 1:22:25Every time Cleveland got going it was the Yankees that killed him.
- 1:22:31Curve is in.
- 1:22:32Thank you.
- 1:22:33Cleveland was trying to have a very respectable finish.
- 1:22:37They were playing about the best ball in the league till the Yankees went out there last
- 1:22:40week and won four ballgames in two nights.
- 1:22:54Chico Samon.
- 1:22:55They're trying him at first base now.
- 1:22:58They've had him at second.
- 1:22:59They've had him in right field.
- 1:23:01They know he's got the bat.
- 1:23:02They know he can run.
- 1:23:05Where are they playing.
- 1:23:09Ground ball to third pass for you down the left field line.
- 1:23:11Simone is on his way to second base.
- 1:23:13Valo has sent him.
- 1:23:14He's coming in easily.
- 1:23:15Trash throws in the third and it's a double.
- 1:23:20So you keep hitting like he's been hitting.
- 1:23:21They're gonna play you someplace.
- 1:23:24As you hit number three off downing.
- 1:23:30Simone has two of them now have how so who has the other one.
- 1:23:38He single to left in the third.
- 1:23:41Had there been nobody on base how they would have gotten a double in the third inning.
- 1:23:46That was the time when someone was cut down at third trying to go around there.
- 1:23:50That was the relay trash to men.
- 1:23:55The boy at first pitch is in for a strike.
- 1:24:00Nobody down.
- 1:24:01How's our right hand hitter.
- 1:24:06Thanks all for the strike strike to.
- 1:24:11Well look at that at the end of five Detroit and Baltimore six and six.
- 1:24:19Oreo still hoping to do something about second place.
- 1:24:22This is their last game of the season.
- 1:24:23They don't play tomorrow.
- 1:24:29A drive along the right field line is fair and it's gonna get the run in and Pepperton
- 1:24:35is kicking now to Stevens and Steven just trying to walk away from him.
- 1:24:39Pepper Tom is demonstrating rather forcefully where the ball hit and Stevens I think is
- 1:24:44warning him saying you better get away from me.
- 1:24:47John was saying before the game that in a ball game in which you're playing for the
- 1:24:51stakes that they're playing for he would try to be a little bit more patient.
- 1:24:54But I'd say that Pepper Tom is trying his patience.
- 1:25:02Is there a double right on the right field line as I saw it it kicked up the white.
- 1:25:05But Pepper Tom was trying to claim it hit outside.
- 1:25:12So we've got the tying run at second base if you go away don't go away very far because
- 1:25:23this thing ain't over yet.
- 1:25:24That's a three two ball game a line double right on the line to house it right.
- 1:25:32This gets some on in and we have the tying run at second and no man retired here in the
- 1:25:36sixth inning.
- 1:25:37The batter is Leon Wagner and he popped it up at the short fly ball that trashed the
- 1:25:41left fielders under.
- 1:25:42He has a ball that pretty high.
- 1:25:51Now the run that Howard scored the third inning is the difference.
- 1:25:57And Austin is out there now talking to Downing.
- 1:26:00Yogi has his bullpen going.
- 1:26:02As we said earlier the only guy who won't be down there if he needs him is Whitey.
- 1:26:07He did his job last night and he really did it.
- 1:26:14Max Alves the third baseman who can hurt you right handed batter doubles by Simone and
- 1:26:21housing three to New York.
- 1:26:30There's a ball hit high back in the left center just going back.
- 1:26:33He can't get it.
- 1:26:34Alves is hit for an extra base hitters off the scoreboard.
- 1:26:37There's a tying run coming in and Alves is coming into third base for a triple.
- 1:26:44All tied three and three.
- 1:26:54He hit that one and this gets Yogi out of the dugout.
- 1:26:58Nicholson and Ramon surrender both hand Yogi is marching out to the mound.
- 1:27:17Pepper Don is there at the mound.
- 1:27:18Howard is there also.
- 1:27:19Yogi has his arms folded now.
- 1:27:22He hasn't made a move for the bullpen yet.
- 1:27:24We don't know whether he will or not.
- 1:27:32Nope he's walking away.
- 1:27:33He's leaving at the downing.
- 1:27:34A triple by Alves and a big one.
- 1:27:40Trash went back as far as he could and left center and the ball simply sailed on past
- 1:27:44him and bounced off the left center field auxiliary scoreboard.
- 1:27:48That's a big blow here at this ballpark.
- 1:27:56Now I have Johnny Romano who has been up twice and struck out the Yankees draw the infield
- 1:27:59in and they are ruling very much the fact that they didn't harvest the crop that was
- 1:28:06there in the first inning.
- 1:28:08They had that chance.
- 1:28:09He might say to put it away.
- 1:28:12Wait a minute now Howard is talking with umpire Rice.
- 1:28:21Just a moment Rice is most thing Pepper Don to go back to first base.
- 1:28:24Pepper Don has started over to the mound.
- 1:28:26What the umpire is trying to do is get the ballgame going.
- 1:28:29Now wait here comes Yogi and apparently the stall was on and that's what the umpire now
- 1:28:34Pepper Don says something to Rice and Rice is warning him.
- 1:28:38Don't say anymore.
- 1:28:41Yogi apparently wanted a few more pitches in the bullpen.
- 1:28:44Of course the umpires are not at all aware of what clubs do at a time like this.
- 1:28:51It's all a complete surprise to them.
- 1:28:57Well Yogi has got to take him out now because he's not there for the second time.
- 1:29:00He's got the ball.
- 1:29:03This is all for downing and Yogi sends him and give him a pat on the backside and downing
- 1:29:08and then he walks away.
- 1:29:12Okay Al is out after five and a third innings.
- 1:29:26The Indians caught up with him in the sixth.
- 1:29:29No two ways about that.
- 1:29:31A double by Samoan a line double by Hauser and a big triple by Alves running down to
- 1:29:37The bullpen for Cleveland is Tion.
- 1:29:40I told you nobody's holding anything back.
- 1:29:45I mean Tevitz is simply infuriated that the way this season is going with the Yankees.
- 1:29:51This is Louis Tion.
- 1:29:52We're just his top pitcher right now.
- 1:29:55He's going to the bullpen right now that they're not the Indians have got the ballgame even
- 1:30:01have it said before the game he said people ask me who's my pitcher for tomorrow.
- 1:30:05He said look you tell me what I've got to do today.
- 1:30:07I know I've got the user and I'll tell you who it fits tomorrow.
- 1:30:10Now you may have had in mind Tion tomorrow to start or you may not but he has gone to
- 1:30:15The bullpen right now.
- 1:30:19The Yankees had their chance in the first inning when they had two runs in and the base
- 1:30:24is loaded and nobody out.
- 1:30:25Pepper tone hit an infield.
- 1:30:26I was automatically out.
- 1:30:27Trish hit an infield five was automatically out and boy a pop to the second base and there
- 1:30:33went the should we say the opportunity.
- 1:30:36Pete Mickelson has gone on to all right hander a rookie who's had a sound year three three
- 1:30:46ball game runner at third base one out.
- 1:30:49Otherwise, Mickelson has nothing to think over and while he is warming up we will pause
- 1:30:56for station identification.
- 1:30:59Here a Broadway doubleheader during music of Broadway starting at 915 tomorrow morning
- 1:31:03here on WCBS and WCBS FM New York.
- 1:31:17Here in the sixth inning Mickelson will be pitching first of all to John Romano a boy
- 1:31:21from across the river over in New Jersey.
- 1:31:25Then what he held.
- 1:31:26We have the runner at third and a three three ball game and the Indians are just simply
- 1:31:34anguished at their fate with the Yankees this year and want to do something about it while
- 1:31:41they still have a chance.
- 1:31:43You can understand that aside from the fact that a ballclub always wants to win and we
- 1:31:50understand that the Mets are really tearing up the P pass down at St. Louis.
- 1:32:02KC Stengel assigned his contract for next year and the way he's going he may see to
- 1:32:06it that Johnny King doesn't get a chance to sign one.
- 1:32:10Now Romano's up swings at a sinker like one.
- 1:32:14Mickelson on the mound.
- 1:32:18He's been a busy boy.
- 1:32:19This is game number 50.
- 1:32:22He has won six and lost four.
- 1:32:26He has been strictly a bullpen man.
- 1:32:33Infield up runner at third one down the right hander pitches low outside and it is a ball.
- 1:32:39Mickelson wearing glasses.
- 1:32:46The throw side on his ball has a pronounced tendency to sink.
- 1:32:50Actually he hurt his arm.
- 1:32:51He originally was an overhand pitcher.
- 1:32:53He couldn't throw overhand anymore.
- 1:32:55Had to throw a side arm and the sinker just came with a new pitching motion.
- 1:32:59So he regards the injury as a blessing.
- 1:33:03After straight away the right hander delivers and as a ground ball foul softened to the
- 1:33:15third base coach solid image.
- 1:33:16He must look at it.
- 1:33:17Throw it out to the mound.
- 1:33:18Elm of our coaching at first.
- 1:33:19They drawn in Yankee and field is Puppet on and I'll say that Stevens was very patient
- 1:33:28with him just now.
- 1:33:32Richardson lens who is doing magnificently.
- 1:33:36Go back right.
- 1:33:39And Boya trash Maris Madeline the out.
- 1:33:43Howard giving the side back of the plate.
- 1:33:45Relief pitcher Mickelson in position.
- 1:33:50One two pitch swung on a ground ball a short and then knocked it all down.
- 1:33:53Recovered throws over the first and time to get Romano and hold the runner at third base.
- 1:34:00The ball bounced up and hit lens in the chest.
- 1:34:03Had it had there been a swifter runner he couldn't have made the play but he did make
- 1:34:07it on John.
- 1:34:08He was trying to discourage his running speed but nevertheless there was a situation and
- 1:34:17a rather important one.
- 1:34:21Woody hell went up there and now I think he's going to be called back for a hitter.
- 1:34:25This looks like a big Bob chance.
- 1:34:31Big strong left handed batter.
- 1:34:36He's hitting 279.
- 1:34:43In the seventh inning.
- 1:34:44Clouse is at a home run for the Mets with two on.
- 1:34:46Christopher's hit one in the seventh and nobody on and the Mets are still going.
- 1:34:52One of their happiest days in three years.
- 1:34:56While they are moaning just the other side of the Mississippi.
- 1:35:06Do you remember when St. Louis was referred to as the only major league team west of the
- 1:35:10Mississippi River.
- 1:35:20Cincinnati is not playing today.
- 1:35:23San Francisco playing later.
- 1:35:24Here's Bob chance up there.
- 1:35:27The big rookie left handed batter right on top of the plate takes low and side ball one
- 1:35:32chance hitting for hell.
- 1:35:34Who was in right field.
- 1:35:37So this is an easy switch for Tebbitz if he wants to make it he can put chances first
- 1:35:41and send first baseman some on the right.
- 1:35:51A swing and a mess low inside breaking ball one and one.
- 1:35:56We have two men out.
- 1:35:57The infield is back.
- 1:35:58The whole defense is around to the right.
- 1:36:08Top of the sixth inning.
- 1:36:12Nickerson relieving downing delivers outside and low ball to.
- 1:36:36To one pitch is swung on a curve strike to.
- 1:36:50Joe Cooper just made an observation about a major league ball club in reference to the
- 1:36:54Mississippi River he said the twins that's Minnesota.
- 1:36:56So that's the only team on both sides of the Mississippi and I have to take a little difference
- 1:37:00Joe.
- 1:37:01It's got to be on one side of the other and the twins won't admit it to two pitch change
- 1:37:09of face like three swinging.
- 1:37:10And make it get out of the jam.
- 1:37:11You struck him out.
- 1:37:12And it is two runs on three hits.
- 1:37:13It's an even up ballgame score in the five and a half with Mickleson making that save
- 1:37:23The Indians three and the Yankees three.
- 1:37:31It's crisp and clean like no other beer.
- 1:37:38Shines through the glass like frosted gold.
- 1:37:43Turns your thirst to a smile.
- 1:37:49You get a smile every time with a Valentine.
- 1:37:55Won't fill you up.
- 1:37:57Won't let you down.
- 1:37:59The crisp clean taste of a Valentine.
- 1:38:03Won't fill you up.
- 1:38:06Won't let you down.
- 1:38:08So get a smile every time with a Valentine.
- 1:38:17Won't fill you up.
- 1:38:19Won't let you down.
- 1:38:22Wow what a beer.
- 1:38:25That Valentine.
- 1:38:26And Tebets makes the switch.
- 1:38:39Chance who hit for first for right field of hell goes to first base.
- 1:38:43And Simone who had started at first goes to right.
- 1:38:45It is a three three ball game and so the Yankees have got to start all over again.
- 1:38:50That was a big save there by Mickleson who is now the pitcher of records.
- 1:38:54He's game to win or lose downing is off the hook either way.
- 1:38:57Back when he left the mound he couldn't be the winner.
- 1:39:00He might have been the loser.
- 1:39:02We have Boya then Mickleson.
- 1:39:03There's a curve ball grounded down to short.
- 1:39:06Hauser over to first chance for the out.
- 1:39:10One pitch one down.
- 1:39:13Last of the sixth inning.
- 1:39:16There is Mickleson coming on to be the batter.
- 1:39:34Mickleson this year had one hit.
- 1:39:40Lee Stang who was severely threatened.
- 1:39:42It looked as though you didn't see how I could survive the first inning.
- 1:39:46The numbers and Mickleson cuts Mrs.
- 1:39:50Right one.
- 1:39:51He's still with us.
- 1:39:52He's now even again.
- 1:39:53One strike on Mickleson hits right handed.
- 1:39:54Stang is the right hander kicks delivers over.
- 1:39:55And it is like to.
- 1:39:56Do you know how many rounds the Mets made in the seventh inning at St. Louis.
- 1:40:01Just six and now leading 15 to four.
- 1:40:12Over all strike three.
- 1:40:15This is the seventh strikeout for Stang.
- 1:40:19Now we have Lenz who doubled in the first inning.
- 1:40:22Headed to a fourth and second struck out in the third.
- 1:40:25In the four innings the White Sox four and the Athletics nothing.
- 1:40:32Curve is over.
- 1:40:35So the Yankees look at look at that board.
- 1:40:48They pretty well figure that it's up to themselves.
- 1:40:51Well they haven't figured out anyhow.
- 1:40:56Not news to them.
- 1:40:58There's a high drive foul in the upper left field.
- 1:41:03See I think the White Sox certainly have had resilience this year.
- 1:41:08I think they won their last seven.
- 1:41:13They're not letting up.
- 1:41:15They're not only driving first but also if they can't get that they want second.
- 1:41:18Considerably more money finishing second and third or at a time.
- 1:41:26Lenz dropped underneath the high inside fastball.
- 1:41:33Boys if he needed to save he got it.
- 1:41:40One and two now he gets back up again.
- 1:41:51Stang pitches and Lenz files it back and it knocked a lens off one of our cameras.
- 1:42:06That's what the fans are howling about.
- 1:42:11Now whoever holds the budget down at WPI acts I bet you had heart failure when I heard that.
- 1:42:17One two pitch swung on at a high fly ball in the short left.
- 1:42:20Here is the left field of Wagner and it drops.
- 1:42:23Lenz is on his way to second base and he comes in and he's there for a double.
- 1:42:29Wagner seemed to have the ball under control.
- 1:42:31Then he stopped I think he lost it in the sun.
- 1:42:35It dropped in front of him and it's a double for Lenz.
- 1:42:39Ran it out.
- 1:42:42Hit number nine now for the Yankees.
- 1:42:44Three three ball game.
- 1:42:47Man things are happening all over the baseball front these days.
- 1:42:51They had a nod one last night in the ball game at St. Louis.
- 1:43:00He had a ground ball hit an umpire.
- 1:43:06Very simple ruling the ball was dead because the umpire was in front of the infielder.
- 1:43:12Had the umpire been behind the infielder the ball would have been in play.
- 1:43:16Richardson swings and has a drive foul at the right field corner.
- 1:43:24He's leading in one.
- 1:43:35Of course down to the American League system of umpiring.
- 1:43:37I don't think that can happen because they keep their umpires back.
- 1:43:41Second base umpire was inside last night at St. Louis.
- 1:43:46Richardson the ground ball to third.
- 1:43:48Alves up.
- 1:43:49In time to chat.
- 1:43:54No one hit a sun double and left field for Lenz.
- 1:43:59Totals at the end of six three runs five hits and no errors for Cleveland.
- 1:44:05Three runs nine hits and no errors for New York.
- 1:44:09The action carries on.
- 1:44:11And right now let me say that the next portion of this game will be brought to you by Ballantine Beer.
- 1:44:17Beer after beer the most refreshing around.
- 1:44:20So smile.
- 1:44:21Send them back and enjoy a baseball and ice cold Ballantine beer.
- 1:44:27Now we have the shortstop in here.
- 1:44:31But Phil is foul ball to sort of keeping folks away country.
- 1:44:35They sure are and that one hit that telephoto lens over there only cost about five thousand dollars.
- 1:44:42They'd rather lose a cameraman than that lens.
- 1:44:45Well we've got a pressure packed ballgame right here at Yankee Stadium.
- 1:44:49The Indians have come back to tie it up at 3 3.
- 1:44:53Couple of other pressure packed games around.
- 1:44:56And the National League the Mets came up with six runs in the seventh inning.
- 1:45:01And lead the Cardinals 15 to 4 at the end of six and a half.
- 1:45:05Holy cow look at those homers Altman Crane pool with two on.
- 1:45:10Charlie Smith.
- 1:45:12Klaus with two on and Christopher five homers by the Mets.
- 1:45:16White and Boyer of home it for the Cardinals.
- 1:45:19And Philadelphia and Cincinnati just sitting there laughing up a storm listening to the game.
- 1:45:24They're not playing today.
- 1:45:26And the American League gets Baltimore six and the Tigers six at the end of six.
- 1:45:30Red Sox five Washington nothing and a five.
- 1:45:33White Sox for Kansas City nothing and a four and a half.
- 1:45:36And they've just put the score up on the scoreboard.
- 1:45:39And you hear the fans reaction as Pete Mickelson gets ready to pitch to Vic D'Avilio.
- 1:45:44It's blown away ball one D'Avilio is hit to the box and flying to center.
- 1:45:51Batting 271.
- 1:45:59Mickelson's next delivery swing and a miss strike one one on one.
- 1:46:03Pete Mickelson who came on in a real clutch situation.
- 1:46:07A runner at third and one out got Romano to bounce out to lens and struck out Bob chance batting for what he held.
- 1:46:16And that's what kept this game at a 3 3 tie.
- 1:46:19He runs up the bunt takes it high ball to have the same type pitch on which Mickelson had struck out chance a change up curveball.
- 1:46:36Now the 2 1 delivery in their strike to call 2 and 2.
- 1:46:46This time of the year and this time of the day here at Yankee Stadium is tough to pick up that ball from the pitcher.
- 1:46:51The shadows have completely covered the pitching box and home plate to pitch ground ball to the right side.
- 1:46:59And that was right has it and that was waiting for Mickelson to come over.
- 1:47:07That's what I'm going to make the play and then realize that Mickelson couldn't get there and tried to beat D'Avilio couldn't do it.
- 1:47:14And that goes as an infield single.
- 1:47:17What a weird play.
- 1:47:20The Yankees got a break on a similar play in the first inning when Richardson butted.
- 1:47:25The pitcher staying through to the first baseman Simone who caught the ball and then went to tag the bag and Richardson beat him to the bag.
- 1:47:33And that play cost the Indians two runs the Yankees scored two runs in that first inning.
- 1:47:39And Tito Frank Conor is going to bat for Billy Moran as Bertie Tebbott's going all out to win this ballgame.
- 1:47:47As you know there's no team in baseball that likes the pennant winning team to win the pennant against their team.
- 1:47:54They figure it kind of leaves a black eye.
- 1:47:58So Tebbott's is going all out to thwart the Yankees in their attempt to wrap it up today.
- 1:48:04Tito Frank Conor batting 249 has 12 doubles two triples eight homers and 24 runs batted in.
- 1:48:14Left hand batter which makes the double play that much tougher.
- 1:48:21Davileo who can fly is at first base.
- 1:48:25He has 21 stolen bases.
- 1:48:32Frank Conor digs in at home plate.
- 1:48:35Davileo with a short lead at first. Pepitone holding him on.
- 1:48:42Here's a stretch. Boyer is in at third.
- 1:48:45Pitch to Frank Conor swinging a miss strike one.
- 1:48:51Frank Conor steps back gets a little dirt.
- 1:48:58Now he looks down at Sally Hema's coaching at third. Boyer is way in at third base.
- 1:49:05Lins and Richardson have shortened up a couple of steps at short and second.
- 1:49:09The stretch.
- 1:49:13The pitch. A line drive. Beautiful play by Pepitone. Double play.
- 1:49:18So Pepitone.
- 1:49:22Oh it's feeling a little punk.
- 1:49:26By letting Davileo beat out that rounder to him.
- 1:49:29Leap high in the air to take a double away from Frank Conor and Davileo could possibly have scored on that ball.
- 1:49:36It was heading down in the right field corner and Pepitone turns it into a double play.
- 1:49:43So two quick outs and here's Lee Stang. He sacrificed and bounced to the shortstop.
- 1:49:48Hitting 0-6-0.
- 1:49:52A thriller here at Yankee Stadium today.
- 1:49:553-3 in the top of the seventh. The pitch is in there. Strike one call.
- 1:50:01And had Pepitone not been holding Davileo on the bag at first that ball would have been in for a double right down the line.
- 1:50:11Curve over. Strike two. Call. Nothing and two.
- 1:50:21Yankee Mantle playing a very shallow right field against the right hand hitting Stang. Curve outside. One ball two strikes.
- 1:50:31White Sox lead Kansas City 5-0 now at the end of five. Red Sox lead Washington 5-0 end of five.
- 1:50:38And Baltimore and Detroit tied 6-6 end of six.
- 1:50:41And it's the Mets 15 and the Cardinals four at the end of seven.
- 1:50:46And the win delivers. It's outside with the curve. Two and two. On deck Chico Simone.
- 1:51:06Two delivery. Low ball three. Full count.
- 1:51:20Three balls. Two strikes. Two out. Nobody on. The payoff pitch. Low ball four.
- 1:51:28Stang took it. It was close. First walk allowed by Mickelson.
- 1:51:34Stang at first with two out. Here's Chico Simone. Fly to right. Single a center and double a left.
- 1:51:39He has scored a run and driven in a run.
- 1:51:45Well Holy Cross was leading Syracuse 8-0 at the half.
- 1:51:49But Syracuse bounced back with 34 points in the second half and defeated Holy Cross 34-8.
- 1:51:57In case you're wondering why you're not hearing the voice of the Yankees, Mel Allen the last two days, he was up there doing this game.
- 1:52:05First pitch to Simone is in there. Strike one call.
- 1:52:15Pepitone holds first against Stang. Stretch by Mickelson.
- 1:52:19Pitch to the right hand hitter. Foul in back of the plate. Strike two.
- 1:52:25Simone is batting 3-10. He's been a pleasant surprise for Bertie Tebbott and the Indians.
- 1:52:40On deck Dick Hauser. Here's the stretch.
- 1:52:45From outside he held up. One ball two strikes.
- 1:53:07And the game with a short lead at first base. Mickelson checks him. Delivers a curved strike.
- 1:53:15That good change up curve ball again.
- 1:53:19And for the Indians in the top of the seventh, no runs, one hit. No Yankee errors, one man left.
- 1:53:25At the end of six and a half, Cleveland three and the Yankees three.
- 1:53:29It comes off the ice sparkling cold.
- 1:53:41It's smooth and satisfying all the way.
- 1:53:46Go ahead, enjoy the best.
- 1:54:00The crisp clean taste of a Valentine.
- 1:54:16Won't fill you up. Won't let you down. What a beer. That Valentine.
- 1:54:35For the Indians Tito Francona has stayed in the game to play right field. And Larry Brown has moved into play second base.
- 1:54:47So Francona will be hitting in the eighth position in the lineup. And Larry Brown will be hitting in the lead off spot.
- 1:54:59Roger Maris steps in. Maris's walk struck out and bounced out to the pitcher batting 281.
- 1:55:07Lee Stang who got off to a real shaky start.
- 1:55:13And then they're all the way for Cleveland. His pitch to Maris is a curve outside ball one.
- 1:55:19A 3-3 ball game in the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:55:30Stang delivers a foul tip back. Strike one, one-on-one.
- 1:55:51Here's the one-one. Pitch a curve. Popped in the air. The shortstop Dickhouser right near second base. Makes the catch.
- 1:55:58Maris hit that one right off his fist. One out. Here's Mickey Maddell.
- 1:56:12Mickey doubled with the bases loaded in the first inning driving in two runs then hit to the box and struck out batting 303.
- 1:56:24Stang's pitch is on the inside corner. Strike one called.
- 1:56:40The first ball fouled and the upper deck strike two. On deck Elston Hart.
- 1:57:06Stang ready. Right handed delivers a curve low gets back to the screen. One ball two strikes.
- 1:57:26Now Stang delivers. Foul again back in the upper deck.
- 1:57:37Nobody on in the last half of the seventh inning.
- 1:57:57Lee Stang ready. His curve is popped foul outside a third near the stands and goes back too far for Alvis to reach.
- 1:58:11Still one ball two strikes on Mickey.
- 1:58:30All right Stang gets set out on the mound. Fires it in. It's inside. Romano started to throw the ball to third base now with his hands on his hips talking to Johnny Rice.
- 1:58:43The count is even at two and two.
- 1:59:01Here's Stang's two to delivery. Little bit low ball three and this time Stang and Romano did not agree with Johnny Rice a full count on Mantle.
- 1:59:21Three three ball game here in the bottom of the seventh one out nobody on. Stang ready now for the payoff pitch to Mantle.
- 1:59:31Foul down the left field line near the stands and going back into the stands out of play.
- 1:59:41All hit off a fan's hands and bounce back onto the field Larry now picks it up says we need a new ball in play.
- 1:59:51But Stang does not like the ball that Johnny Rice to him he wants another.
- 2:00:07So we'll have the three to pitch all over again to Mantle.
- 2:00:20Here is the payoff pitch fouled again out of play.
- 2:00:26Off the upper deck and down below and it hit the guide wire just as it was coming into the stands and bounce back onto the field.
- 2:00:37Little horse play at home played with Madeline Romano.
- 2:00:53All right Stang ready again.
- 2:00:57He kicks delivers it's high ball.
- 2:01:10The third walk given up by Lee Stang his first since the first inning when he walked two men.
- 2:01:16One of those walks was intentional to Howard who is up now. Elias walk single and struck out batting 313.
- 2:01:25Bob Chance holds first against Mantle.
- 2:01:32Stretch by Stang pitches low with a curve ball one.
- 2:01:54The deck leads away at first. Stang's pitches over the inside corner one on one and Howard was not happy with that.
- 2:02:14One on one on Elston Howard.
- 2:02:18Stang to the set position his pitch is low knocked down by Romano two balls and a strike.
- 2:02:25Time is called and while time is called we'll pause for station identification.
- 2:02:34Here a Broadway doubleheader on Lee Jordan's music of Broadway tomorrow morning at 915 on WCBS and WCBS FM New York.
- 2:02:51I were ready to go two balls one strike on Howard one out three three the score.
- 2:02:55The first one to be a man at first were in the bottom of the seven.
- 2:03:04Here's a stretch pitch a ground ball a short.
- 2:03:07Alvis cuts in front of the throws in time to force Madeline second just did get him.
- 2:03:12And it's a good thing Alvis cut in front of Dick Hauser or they've never got mad at second base.
- 2:03:18And the better now with Howard at first will be Pepitone who is popped a second single and bounced a second Joe batting 250.
- 2:03:38Chance not playing Howard real close to the bag.
- 2:03:44The stretch in the pitch to Pepitone a foul back out of play.
- 2:03:48Back of the plate one strike on Joe.
- 2:04:08On deck Tommy Tresh to out Howard leading off first staying ready his pitches low.
- 2:04:19The counts even at one to one.
- 2:04:37Stang now ready for the one one pitch swing ground ball a second base up with it Larry Brown.
- 2:04:43Let's the chance for the out.
- 2:04:45That's all for the Yankees in the bottom of the seven.
- 2:04:47No runs no hits no Indian errors one man left and at the end of seven it's Cleveland three in the Yankees three the National League at the end of seven and a half the Mets 15 the Cardinals four.
- 2:04:59I'll say that again for those of you might have fell off your seats.
- 2:05:02The Mets 15 and the Cardinals for the end of seven and a half Pittsburgh and Milwaukee just getting underway as is Chicago at San Francisco Houston at Los Angeles tonight.
- 2:05:13Philadelphia and Cincinnati not scheduled and they must really be enjoying this day off with the Mets holding a 11 run lead playing the eighth inning out in St. Louis.
- 2:05:27For the Indians it'll be Dick house a Leon Wagner and Max Elvis to face Pete Mickelson.
- 2:05:36Mickelson who came on in the sixth inning to relieve Al Downing.
- 2:05:42Ready to go.
- 2:05:43How's her is two for two he walked singled and doubled he is driven in a run and scored a run.
- 2:05:49How's about in 256.
- 2:05:59This is the top of the eighth inning.
- 2:06:15All right Mickelson toes the rubber gets the sign from Elson Howard.
- 2:06:23First pitch the house here is taken strike one call.
- 2:06:38Mickelson's next pitch low and away with the curve one on one.
- 2:06:58Here's the one one pitch low and inside ball to two a month.
- 2:07:03Boyer is playing in a third house again get down that line he has 20 stolen bases.
- 2:07:18Time is called.
- 2:07:21Just as Mickelson was ready to deliver the pitch.
- 2:07:25The inning had come down from the upper deck right around the batter's box and Johnny Rice quickly called time.
- 2:07:34Little things like that flying around the batter's box can affect the batter.
- 2:07:39More so than the pitcher in a spot like this.
- 2:07:41All right here's a two one delivery inside ball three three and one.
- 2:07:57Mickelson kicks delivers it's right down the road it's not Johnny Rice started to lift the right hand and pulled it down quickly.
- 2:08:05It's ball for that ball must have really been a sharp sinker.
- 2:08:14And now Leon Wagner is coming up.
- 2:08:16Bertie Tibbets came out of the dugout to talk to Wagner Wagner's 0 for 3 struck out bounce the first fly to left hitting 255.
- 2:08:28Boya moves way in a third.
- 2:08:30Capiton holding first against Howser let's see what Bertie Tibbets has up his managerial sleeve right now.
- 2:08:40The stretch by Mickelson.
- 2:08:42Pitch to Wagner swings and misses strike one.
- 2:08:50Now Wagner looks down at Sally Hamas coaching a third.
- 2:08:58A lot of times the manager will let a slugger swing at one pitch and then go to bond on the next one throw to first house a bag
- 2:09:06Score is tied here three three. Nobody out in the top of the eighth
- 2:09:11Stretch by Mickelson his pitch swing and a miss strike two
- 2:09:15Oh
- 2:09:25Now let's see if Mickelson uses that change-up curveball of his that's been quite effective for him since he's been in this ballgame
- 2:09:32Got two strikeouts with it
- 2:09:40Right hander stretches
- 2:09:42Low and inside one ball two strikes. He didn't use it on that pitch. That was a sinker
- 2:09:48Oh
- 2:10:02Mickelson gets the sign from Howard he sets throw over the first how's her his back
- 2:10:07Now Peter's ready delivers a foul just got a piece of that ball
- 2:10:21Still one and two on Wagner
- 2:10:33Nobody out and how's her at first score tied three three
- 2:10:49Mickelson's change-up curve popped in the air in the infield boy a right at the mound is there he one hands it
- 2:11:01And that'll bring up Max Alvis Alvis has bounced a short struck out and tripled to deep left field
- 2:11:19Max Alvis batting at 253
- 2:11:25Right hand batter
- 2:11:33Throw to first base houses back. He's dancing off first bothering at Mickelson a little bit on deck Johnny Romano
- 2:11:44Here's a stretch another throw over there how's her is back
- 2:12:01Now the stretch
- 2:12:03Pitch swing and a miss the runners going and he's hung up between first and second Richardson the pep it's on to Richardson the pep it's on a bluffs and in
- 2:12:13That was a delayed by Dick Howser, but how it was alert for it and his perfect throw to Richardson
- 2:12:23Hung them up between first and second for a little while there looked like Richardson and pepper Toma just playing catch throwing it back and forth, but they get how's her
- 2:12:33Two to four to three to four to three so it's two out a one strike count on Max Alvis
- 2:12:45Slow curve over strike two call
- 2:12:53Mickelson pitching with his full wind up now gets the sign from Howard to strike pitch swing and a miss strike three
- 2:13:16For the Indians no runs no hits no Yankee errors nobody left at the end of seven and a half Cleveland three and the Yankees three
- 2:13:26Let's hear some claps

- 2:14:44While the Cardinals scored a run in the eighth inning it's 15 to 5 in favor of the Mets they got a long road to hold their out in St. Louis
- 2:15:02Lee staying ready to pitch to Tommy Trash curve hit foul outside of first strike one on deck lead boy and then Mickelson will follow
- 2:15:27Fastball hit on the ground foul again outside of first nothing into on trash Yankees have nine base hits but they got eight of those hits in the first three innings and they got one in the sixth
- 2:15:41Stang has really settled down they had him on the ropes in the first inning Yankees scored two and then had the bases loaded with nobody out but staying got out of it to strike pitch curve
- 2:15:56Pulled foul outside of first again still nothing in two
- 2:16:16Here's a two strike pitch low and inside one ball two strikes
- 2:16:26Goodness for a more perfect day for a ballgame
- 2:16:40Stang gets it outside and the count is even at two and two
- 2:16:58Here's his two to delivery ground ball a second base Larry Brown and the big hop flips the chance it's one out
- 2:17:09It brings up Boyer cleat pop to second and single left field in the third with two out to drive in a run check that with one out at the time and that run was the third run the Yankees scored
- 2:17:23Then in the sixth inning Boyer bounced a short he's one for three batting to 18 and Johnny Blanchett has come in the on deck circle.
- 2:17:32So it looks like Mickelson will not come up to bat pitch to Boyer is low ball one and it could be that Pedro Ramos is heating up in the bullpen
- 2:17:57Two balls no strikes now on cleat Boyer Pedro Ramos is heating up in the Yankee bullpen
- 2:18:13It's two balls no strikes on Boyer staying into the windup pitches it's a ground ball in the hole a base hit to left field
- 2:18:21Boyer round first Wagner up with it and fires it on in and cleat is on with a single and the batter is Johnny Blanchard batting for Pete Mickelson
- 2:18:37Mickelson hit an excellent outstanding job in relief Blanchard batting to thirty seven eight double seven home is twenty eight runs batted in on deck fill in
- 2:18:59Boyer at first with one out the stretch by staying pitch to Blanchard is low scooped out of the dirt by Johnny Romano ball one
- 2:19:28Here's a stretch pitch pop foul coming near the stands and just back into the first row of box seats alongside the Indian dugout Romano could not reach it
- 2:19:43And it's a one on Blanchard that ballgame is over out in St. Louis the Mets have defeated the Cardinals 15 to five Parsons is the winner and it looks like Sadecki is the loser
- 2:20:08So Philadelphia and Cincinnati will have a good night's sleep tonight as they go into that final day of that National League pennant race that could end up in a three or possibly four way tie
- 2:20:22How do you like that. I hate to explain that playoff situation that could develop. All right. Here's the stretch by staying the pitch to Blanchard hit high in the air to right field
- 2:20:37But Tito Frank corner is moving in under it and he's got it. Blanchard flies to right field to out. That's right. Joe Cooper has just reminded me that either Philadelphia or Cincinnati will be eliminated tomorrow
- 2:20:58Depending on who wins or loses the game. All right. Here's Phil Lynn's doubled bounce the short struck out and then doubled in the sixth two for four both of them doubled lens batting to 51
- 2:21:13Boyer at first with two out the stretch by staying pitch to Lynn's is low ball one and don't forget this American League race white socks a win and five to nothing playing the bottom of the sixth
- 2:21:42against Kansas City pitch a ground ball in the hole a base hit the left field for boy is around second going to third the throw comes into second base and Lynn's holds it first the Yankees have run is at first and third and two out and Bobby Richardson the batter
- 2:22:01Lynn's now three for five at the 11th hit for the Yankees and here comes birdie Tebbitz out birdie Tebbitz is talking first to late on fire Johnny Rice Bobby Richardson who is two for four a bunch single a single a left center bounce the short bounce the third
- 2:22:26and Tebbitz is coming out to the mound he's calling his infield in and of course they want to be on the alert here for a possible double steal a lot of managers want to double steal is in order in this situation like the catcher to fire the ball back to the pitcher
- 2:22:43and in the event that the runner on third comes home they can hang him up and if he doesn't the pitcher can still turn around and possibly get the man going to second to an unusual play but it has worked in the past Tebbitz is talking to
- 2:22:57Romano staying and Larry Brown the second baseman Bobby Richardson the batter Bobby was up in the sixth inning with Lynn's at second and two out and bounced out to third the score is tied 3 3 where in the bottom of the eighth inning two out and two on here's the official paid attendance
- 2:23:1514,879 the total including servicemen fifteen thousand five hundred and forty four all right the huddle is over Tebbitz is going back to the dugout it looks like staying is staying in there unless Tebbitz does the same thing Yogi did walked out to downing walked back to the dugout and then came back out again took downing out
- 2:23:44all right that's the situation Lynn's at first boy or a third Richardson the batter two out the score tied 3 3 in the bottom of the eighth here's the stretch pitch to Bobby low and outside ball one couldn't ask for a better man up at the plate in a situation like this than Richardson Bobby who has been hitting that ball hard consistently
- 2:24:13The stretch the pitch fouled into the stands out of play Bobby Richardson has struck out only thirty five times all year and he's been at bat six hundred and seventy five times including the four times today a 1 1 count on Bobby runners lead off first and second
- 2:24:42The runners lead off first and third the stretch by staying his pitch swing and a missed strike to Bobby went down on one knee after that swing one ball two strikes two out and two on tension here at Yankee Stadium and I got a headache from all the tension birds are flying around above us
- 2:25:07here's the stretch look at the runner at first the pitch line drive
- 2:25:21a base hit for Richardson he had a line drive that Dick has a lead for got his glove on but it trickled out of his glove he could not make a play on Linda's second or Richardson at first and Bobby come through with a clutch single
- 2:25:41Yankee's lead four to three and the bottom of the eighth and the batter is Roger Maris Roger is over three he walks struck out hit to the box and pop the short actually house a leap too high for that ball and hit in the heel of his glove and just trickled out
- 2:26:04here's the stretch lens at second Richardson at first the pitch to Maris is low ball one Bobby Richardson drives in his fiftieth run of the year and it could be the most important run he's driven in all year
- 2:26:26The stretch by staying pitch to Maris ground ball just foul outside of third Maris hit that one right off the end of the bat and it's squid foul
- 2:26:40one and one on Maris
- 2:27:00lens leaves off second Richardson off first here's the stretch by staying his pitch file back to the screen the counts even not quite it's one ball and two strikes

- 2:28:33a full count on Roger Maris staying ready for the payoff pitch the runners go he delivers it's high ball four and the bases are loaded
- 2:29:02and here comes birdie Tebbit and that's gonna be all for Lee staying it's George Strickland walking out there and that's ready to have it but nevertheless that's all for Lee staying
- 2:29:19pitched a very unusual ball game but a fine ball game he worked seven and two third innings he allowed 12 base hits walk for struck out six men seven men I think that is seven many struck out and has been charged with four runs but he's got the bases loaded here as Don McAvoy

- 2:47:29First pitch to Romano ground foul outside a third.
- 2:47:32Nice play by Sally Hamas in the coaching box strike one proud yells as a paper airplane blows right out in front of home plate.
- 2:47:47Howard flips it away left handed saving that arm.
- 2:47:55Yankees won the pennant five straight years once before 1949 through 1953 the pitch check swing foul back in the upper deck out of play.
- 2:48:18Pete Mickelson is the pitcher of record for the Yankees and Lee Stang for Cleveland.
- 2:48:25Here's a two strike pitch foul just off the end of the bat went for an outside curveball and just did Nick it.
- 2:48:35Back in 1922 the Yankees won the pennant on the next to last day of the season.
- 2:48:39St. Louis Browns finished second and in 1949 they won it on the last day of the season.
- 2:48:46Red Sox finished second and I'll never forget that series because I was in it.

- 2:51:33Here they come Pete Mickelson did a great job going through their actor Lopez Phil Lynn spectacular down the stretch.
- 2:51:41Pedro Ramos and Yogi Mano Yogi Yogi Yogi congratulating his player there's a happiest man here in the clubhouse Yogi Berra Joe Pepitone.
- 2:51:58God is 100. We'll get you a little bit. We're waiting for the manager to get him over here to talk to him.
- 2:52:05Yo come on over here buddy. Yogi is this one sweeter than when you were a player. Yes it is.
- 2:52:11Jerry sure is. Did that. Mickelson did a good job when he went in there and well we fought all the way.
- 2:52:17Jerry I think this is the hardest one I think I ever been on. Well actually even though that one and forty nine went longer this one when your first year as a manager.
- 2:52:28Were there any time at any time did you have any qualms about this club winning. Well Jerry was just one time the writers asked me the game we lost in Los Angeles.
- 2:52:37Then I I really got it back up when we wanted to beat Minnesota twice over there in Minnesota when Washington beat Chicago though I said I think we could do it.
- 2:52:48Yogi let me ask this how did you manage to say don't stay so calm all year. I'm excited you're not excited.
- 2:52:54Well a lot of people say they don't show it Jerry maybe I did or not but I've been a ball player Jerry I know how it feels and every one of these boys deserve.
- 2:53:03We worked hard for it Jerry and we deserve it. Well let me ask you this the big guys the Mantle the Howard the Maris's Pepitone coming in on the stretch drive Bobby Richardson.
- 2:53:14When that ball went out Dick Hauser the pivotal play and he jumped a little too soon. What happened on that then. Oh boy everything Jerry.
- 2:53:24That was a nice one. The Crusader was telling me the ball got in the sun there he jumped up from the shadow into the sun and they got his eyes.
- 2:53:31Yogi go enjoy yourself a well deserved victory. I know you're thrilled to that but we're thrilled for you.
- 2:53:36The first year out Yogi comes up with his big one the first planet Joe Pepitone. You're beautiful tell us about that 100th RBI.
- 2:53:45Jerry took a long time coming boy but I'm happy I got it. There's my man right back there Phil Linds. Mickey he got it in for me.
- 2:53:52You know Jerry all year long having trouble on first base and then coming through today you know I mean in the winning it takes old pressure.
- 2:54:00I had a ball here and it disappeared after that last out. How did you feel this morning going into the game Joe? Jerry I was a little shaken up believe me.
- 2:54:07I was real tight and I was worrying about the two days previous where I made a couple of errors on first base it was on my mind and it hurts me a lot.
- 2:54:15But today in that in that evening when we got those five runs everything was going I said I just want to get one more RBI for myself Jerry that's 100.
- 2:54:26All right a long time. Pepe let me ask you this when in the first inning the bags loaded.
- 2:54:31Little nervous Jerry everything was tight. Do you get that tight that the arms get tough and the wrist gets stiff.
- 2:54:37Oh Jerry I was like still this is the whole thing you have to be loose on first base.
- 2:54:41The only time I was loose on first base when it was two out in the last inning when I saw that pop up go to Ellie I says Ellie don't drop it please I don't want to get the next ball hit to me.
- 2:54:50I really feel good Jerry. This right now is the happiest time of my life right now believe me I'm really happy.
- 2:54:56Joe Pepitone congratulations good luck in the series my friend. Thank you very much.
- 2:55:00Jim Bowden 17 come on over here where's Ellie come on over here Ellie.
- 2:55:05Now wait a minute don't pour it on me this year Ellie how about it a sweet one you've been around for a lot of them.
- 2:55:11It was a good one Jerry and I really appreciate it because you know Yogi was the new manager and a lot of people say this is the year that we're supposed to lose the pennants.
- 2:55:19So I think that that's one of the reasons why I took what we wanted.
- 2:55:22Elson let me ask you this how about that Sun that looked devastating out there in the outfield it looked to me like a lot of balls the outfielders were having trouble they may have caught up to.
- 2:55:31Is it that wicked?
- 2:55:32Well you can recall during the World Series one year that Norm Steven played outfield and in this time of the year the Sun is very rough because it's for the shadows falls and the Sun is right through the stands.
- 2:55:42So otherwise the ball hit it and if you don't get your glasses down and the ball is directed in the Sun you get one black dot so the ball is very hard to pick up.
- 2:55:49Same as hitting up to the point it's very hard hitting.
- 2:55:52Alright Elson Howard one last one how about this ball club the last seven weeks tremendous sir have you ever seen anything like.
- 2:55:57Well I've never seen anything like it Jerry because everyone had counted the ball clubs.
- 2:56:02Well see we were dead we weren't going to win the pennant and we came back with the help of Bowden Downing and Mickey began to hit and all the other fellows Lentz and Kubeck and Richardson and we got real fine relief pitching and Pedro Ramis and we did a real good job.
- 2:56:17Ellie good luck to you enjoy the World Series enjoy that champagne relax and have some fun.
- 2:56:22Well I got a breakthrough here and we're going to break away for a message right after this.
- 2:56:31Yeah.
- 2:56:34Camel time.
- 2:56:38It's camel time camel time it's pleasure time for you.
- 2:56:45Camel time is any time when nothing less will do.

- 2:57:19Right now make it camel time.
- 2:57:24Have a camel cigarette.
- 2:57:33You're managing one pennant pretty good percentage.
- 2:57:37Well I don't know about percentage.
- 2:57:39I think this was the toughest one I ever been in.
- 2:57:42What happened to you?
- 2:57:43Well they gave me I needed a shampoo and they gave me a champagne shampoo.
- 2:57:47Just the first thing you ever had?
- 2:57:49Yeah.
- 2:57:50Well as you look back over your first year managing just how tough was this now that it's over with?
- 2:57:54Well Ralph warned me he told me this is going to be like being a Blair Redden it was terrific.
- 2:58:00I really enjoyed it I think you know like I said before I wanted a one year contract I wanted to see if I could manage I don't know maybe I still don't know but I feel pretty good Redden.
- 2:58:11I would think so.
- 2:58:12Yogan again congratulations.
- 2:58:13Thank you very much.
- 2:58:14I'm not even asking who you're going to play tomorrow.
- 2:58:17So now they're going to take Yogan's picture filled in.
- 2:58:20Just on with us.
- 2:58:21They've borne a little more champagne on the manager.
- 2:58:24Well this is sort of the tradition you know you give the manager the champagne shampoo just like throwing the winning cocks and overboard.
- 2:58:32Now let's see here's Joe Pepito.
- 2:58:36Joe wait a second.
- 2:58:38We've got the radio mic here.
- 2:58:39Congratulations Joe.
- 2:58:40Thank you.
- 2:58:41That's a big game.
- 2:58:42Just seeing just you know it was big enough for me because I got my 100th RBI boy I was waiting one more game.
- 2:58:47I didn't think I was going to make it.
- 2:58:48Yeah but there was one more important point you know when Frank Conner came up to pinch head if that ball had been about four inches higher we might not be here.
- 2:58:55Brad I didn't even think I was going to catch it because I was so tight believe me you know the two previous days fielding poorly very poorly and this is all season long and I was very tight and that eighth inning and ninth inning when we got those runs I said oh boy.
- 2:59:09I just don't let him hit any balls to me there's any let him hit the other good ball players.
- 2:59:12Hey wait a minute Ralph.
- 2:59:14Friends here's Ralph Howe first year as the general manager with one pennant.
- 2:59:18That's a pretty good percentage isn't it Ralph.
- 2:59:19Well it's a wonderful year Ed.
- 2:59:22You got to give the team a lot of credit and Yogi a lot of credit.
- 2:59:25They came from behind it was a long season but in true Yankee style they pulled one out again.
- 2:59:32It was a little rough for a while but this has certainly been a great year.
- 2:59:36Well Mr. Howe you didn't have anything to do with bringing up a fellow named Stonema did you.
- 2:59:40Well I'd like to say that the organization deserves all the credit for that our farm system Johnny Johnson's ahead of it and our scouts and this is what makes the Yankees the winner.
- 2:59:51It's the organization.
- 2:59:53And of course you weren't involved at all in the Remus deal.
- 2:59:56Well we've always liked Pedro and we're glad he was on our side this last month.
- 3:00:03Ralph I know you want to see a lot of people and one more thing aside from congratulations.
- 3:00:07Is it tougher to be a general manager through a pennant battle or is it tougher to be down in the dugout as a field manager.
- 3:00:12I think this is my hardest year Ed and I'd just like to thank all the Yankee fans for supporting us and I think that along with it gives us the zest to go on and be champions.
- 3:00:26And let's hope that this year we'll prove that there's nobody in that National League can beat us and we'll bring that world championship back to New York.
- 3:00:34That's where it belongs.
- 3:00:35Well I know you don't know who you're going to play but I know this that you've had Cincinnati and St. Louis pretty well scouted.
- 3:00:40Who have you had on them.
- 3:00:41Well we've had Mayo Smith Johnny Noon and Bill Skiff and we've got all three clubs well scouted along with San Francisco.
- 3:00:49So we're leaving no stones unturned.
- 3:00:51You've even got a book on Philadelphia that you're not going to use.
- 3:00:54It looks that way.
- 3:00:56Ralph again congratulations.
- 3:00:58Thank you Ed.
- 3:00:59Ralph out friends.
- 3:01:00Been a great year Ralph.
- 3:01:01A real good tough one.
- 3:01:02Now let's see who else is around.
- 3:01:04I tell you we've got the fellows back in the shower room and they're back in the clubhouse.
- 3:01:09I believe that actually this was one of the toughest punters that the Yankees have won and maybe it's left its mark because from what I've seen and my being around here in some years.
- 3:01:20That this is about the quietest Yankee clubhouse after a punnett win that I have encountered.
- 3:01:27Now let's see here is Jim Farley who just come in to say congratulations.
- 3:01:31Jim I think that you are one of the real genuine all line Yankee fans and it's very wonderful to see you here looking so well.
- 3:01:39Well thank you very much.
- 3:01:40I've been rooting for the Yankees since nineteen four.
- 3:01:42I used to go up and see them play or down through the years.
- 3:01:45I'm a devotee of the Yankees.
- 3:01:46I like baseball.
- 3:01:47I come up here and relax and I feel badly when they lose.
- 3:01:50I suffer just as much as they do and I'm happy when they win.
- 3:01:53Jim I know that the Yankees have I know on a season with the Red Sox that one on the last day.
- 3:01:59But I guess this is one of the real tough pennants in it.
- 3:02:01I would think so.
- 3:02:02I don't think they ever went down to the second last day before.
- 3:02:05I was here in nineteen four right over the Yankees up at the old stadium and the Hilltoppers when they lost the game.
- 3:02:11The pennants of the Boston Red Sox and then they won the second game.
- 3:02:16One inning one to nothing eleven innings.
- 3:02:19Chesbo made that very famous wild pitcher.
- 3:02:21Kleino failed to catch the spitball.
- 3:02:23I don't know who was to blame.
- 3:02:24But they lost the pennant by half a game that year.
- 3:02:27That was in nineteen four or five.
- 3:02:29Well we're off together.
- 3:02:30We got to see you Mr. Folley.
- 3:02:32Glad to see you were in and all is well.
- 3:02:34Well I say it right back at you.
- 3:02:35Good luck and God bless you.
- 3:02:36Thank you.
- 3:02:37Now here's Pedro Ramas.
- 3:02:39Pete let me borrow you for a second.
- 3:02:42Here you have the poetic justice should we say.
- 3:02:45You come from the Indians and then you lock up the ballgame against your old ball club as the Yankees nail down the pennant.
- 3:02:51And congratulations on the work you've done over here.
- 3:02:53Thank you very much.
- 3:02:54I don't care what they need anybody else.
- 3:02:56I just want to do a good job and I hope and I wish.
- 3:02:59And I'm so happy that the Yankees win the pennant that I don't know what what else can I say.
- 3:03:04You really put your shoulder to the wheel.
- 3:03:06Well I try my best because I know when you were the winner you got to be first class.
- 3:03:11Well you've been a first class man.
- 3:03:12Pete congratulations.
- 3:03:13Thank you very much.
- 3:03:14OK. And I know the Yankees wish you said so that they could have you in the World Series.
- 3:03:19Now I don't want to get in Jerry Coleman's television picture but there are a couple of fellows I do want to get to you around here.
- 3:03:25I've got a long cord and I'm just going to walk right back out of it.
- 3:03:28Jerry's talking to John Blanchard and he doesn't mind.
- 3:03:31Let's get over here.
- 3:03:32We've had Yogi and here's Steve Hamlin.
- 3:03:34Steve.
- 3:03:35Thank you very much.
- 3:03:36Certainly feel a lot better now than I did about 20 minutes ago.
- 3:03:40How much tougher was the pennant this year than last year.
- 3:03:42It was quite a bit tougher last year we were on top all the way and it seemed like there wasn't as much pressure.
- 3:03:46I felt like there was but I sure didn't after experiencing this year.
- 3:03:49So when we go down to the next to the last day it's really tough.
- 3:03:53Fine Steve. Let's get over to Bobby Richardson.
- 3:03:55Bobby.
- 3:03:56All right.
- 3:03:57You had a line drive that had eyes didn't you. That ball that Howser couldn't hold.
- 3:04:01Well actually Red when I got down to second base he explained that the sun was right over the top of his head.
- 3:04:05He saw the ball all the way and just as he jumped up the sun of course hit him right in his eyes and he didn't see the ball.
- 3:04:10The ball hit on the side of his glove and of course he didn't hold it.
- 3:04:13Well I guess that'll make you a sun worshiper from now on.
- 3:04:15Well sure will. I didn't hit the ball too good Red.
- 3:04:18I hit it right on the fist but I was sure glad to see it drop in there.
- 3:04:21Well the result was important.
- 3:04:23Well it sure was. This has been a long struggle for us and I think since I've been with the club certainly it's been the hardest one to get and the one that I think we appreciate more than any.
- 3:04:30Well Bobby I know this you've never had a September on this ball cup like this one have you.
- 3:04:34That's true Red. This is what won the pennant for us.
- 3:04:36Our tremendous record in September when we had to win those ball games and certainly Chicago and Baltimore set a good pace and we're just pleased that it came out the way it did.
- 3:04:44Well you will set me in there again. Congratulations Bobby.
- 3:04:46Thank you a lot Red.
- 3:04:47Here's Pete Mickelson back here. Pete you came out of the bullpen the ball game was 3-3.
- 3:04:52Cleveland had a man at third base and only one man was out and you really did the job.
- 3:04:57Thanks Red.
- 3:04:58How was the sinker today? Is that what you got him out with?
- 3:05:01The first hitter I did then I got the last hitter Chance out on the change up.
- 3:05:06Then you went two more innings and how did you feel about it?
- 3:05:09Well I got behind like I walked the first hitter but I got out of it. He tried to steal second and delayed steal and they caught him in between and ran him out and after I got him out I had two outs and I felt pretty confident after that.
- 3:05:22Pete you've done quite a job. You've been in 50 ball games this year.
- 3:05:25Is that right Red? I didn't know exactly how many. I knew I was in the high 40's or so.
- 3:05:30Well I think for a first year fellow that's quite a group.
- 3:05:34That's a lot of games.
- 3:05:35Well you rewarded the judgment of your manager. Yogi picked you in the spring. You're his boy and again congratulations.
- 3:05:42Thanks a lot Red.
- 3:05:43Now here's Bob Fischel the director of public relations and Mr. Fischel has come here for the clinching of course. He's got to be here.
- 3:05:52But Bob we haven't seen you in several days. You haven't had anything to do have you?
- 3:05:55No I haven't Red. Thank you. I really can't accept any congratulations. I didn't get a base set all year and I think that's the standard line that I give you every year.
- 3:06:02But it's just as thrilling as the first one that I marked nine years ago. Probably that was the first big thrill I had here and there have been a lot since.
- 3:06:10Well what's kept you out of the ballpark the last few days?
- 3:06:12Well trying to decide how many programs to do and we've done two. One for Cincinnati and one for St. Louis and now the Giants are calling us.
- 3:06:21They want us to prepare another book for them and they want our material for their book and I got Philly's material. If I have to do four of them I don't think we'll get done in time.
- 3:06:29And of course you don't hear from many newspaper men and press and TV about accommodations. Oh boy.
- 3:06:34And nobody in civilian life wants tickets.
- 3:06:40No we haven't got a reserve or box seat left. We do have these open stand tickets though still. Fans can still get those tickets if they want to.
- 3:06:45There are some of those open stand right center field bleachers and they're pretty good seats. Especially on a day like this.
- 3:06:51Well Bob again congratulations and I know it's a great deal of work for you and the rest of the staff but it's worth it isn't it?
- 3:06:56It sure is Red and thank you for everything you've done for us this year because your cooperation has meant an awful lot to us.
- 3:07:01For goodness sake I can take a page out of your book. I haven't had a base hit all season. Thank you Bob.
- 3:07:07There's Mickey Maddle back here. I want to get a quick word on him. Hi Tony. Tony Florio the bad boy. Just stay around here Tony.
- 3:07:12Turn loose that cord. I asked Joe Ripley of all people to step in on it.
- 3:07:16Mick just a quick word. I know you're talking to Jack Hand of the AP. This is about the roughest pennant for you you've been in isn't it?
- 3:07:22I was just telling him that I think this is the biggest thrill I've had in the pennant so far because of the fact that it was so tough to win.
- 3:07:29I hate to admit it but I did give up on it a little bit early. We lost four in a row to Chicago and I wasn't playing. I was feeling bad and Whitey was hurting.
- 3:07:37Everybody was feeling bad and then all of a sudden our whole team just kind of knitted back together and it's a great big thrill to win it this year.
- 3:07:46Well Mick may I say this. I don't want to try and get you to say it but when you started taping up those legs and forcing yourself to go you did a great deal about picking up this ball club my friend.
- 3:07:56And I think you can feel prouder of this one than anyone you've been in. Well I do. I think you had to work harder. Thanks a lot. We did. We had to work real hard.
- 3:08:04The American league is a lot better this year I think than it has been in the past. I know the pitching is a lot better than everything and I just feel real good that we won it.
- 3:08:13Again congratulations. I don't want to try and hold you up. Okay now we promised hey Whitey. We've got Whitey Ford over here friends.
- 3:08:21He can't go on television but radio doesn't have any seeing eye. We caught him on the way to the shower but we couldn't let you get by. That was quite a job you did last night.
- 3:08:30Well thank you Red. I think the club has just been great the last six weeks. It's been somebody picking us up each day. If it isn't Mickey it's somebody on the pitching staff and felt like Phil Linskman had done a great job for Tony.
- 3:08:41It's just been a real team effort if I can use a phrase. And speaking of somebody on the pitching staff making a pick up once in a while a fellow named Ford did that occasionally didn't he?
- 3:08:52Well yes it's been a funny year for me Red. I just wish two out of the last three years I've been able to pitch every fourth day. This year in 1962 something happened and I just hope I can keep pitching every fourth day from now on.
- 3:09:08Well I know York has in mind working you Wednesday if the National League won't get in a playoff and spoil the plot. But one question I want to ask you how's your heel and how do you feel generally?
- 3:09:18Well it was fine. I was worried the first few innings last night because I was pitching with men on bases you know. But after the fall from the third inning on I just could take my wind up pretty near the rest of the game and there was nothing wrong with it.
- 3:09:32And now I'll have until Wednesday for it to get a little better. I think I'll be alright.
- 3:09:36Okay Whitehead. Good luck and enjoy your shower.
- 3:09:38Thank you Red.
