Transcript
- 0:10Speaker 1: Hey, what's going on, everybody? Welcome in to another episode
- 0:12Speaker 1: of the Checo Daily. It's Andrew DiCecco, Eagles beat reporter
- 0:16Speaker 1: for InsideTheBirds.com. Thursday's practice report, the first of the week,
- 0:21Speaker 1: not practicing. Running back Tank Bigsby, abdomen. Tight end Dallas Goddard, knee.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Running back Will Shipley, foot. Wide receiver Devontae Smith, hamstring.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Limited running back Saquon Barkley, stinger. Defensive tackle Jalen Carter, wrist.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Outside linebacker Jonathan Grenard, pectoral safety Drew McCuba, knee. Full
- 0:43Speaker 1: participant guard Tyler Steen with a shoulder. The ones to
- 0:49Speaker 1: really keep an eye on here are those who didn't practice,
- 0:53Speaker 1: and those in particular would be Tank Bigsby, Will Shipley,
- 0:56Speaker 1: and Devontae Smith. Now we are in day one of
- 0:59Speaker 1: the practice week, so it's still really early, but you're
- 1:03Speaker 1: talking about Three really key players, none more important than
- 1:07Speaker 1: Devontae there being the top receiver. He had the hamstring
- 1:11Speaker 1: injury in training camp that kept him out three weeks.
- 1:15Speaker 1: No cause for concern at this time, but it is
- 1:17Speaker 1: something to monitor. And then when you look at Saquon
- 1:20Speaker 1: being limited and Will Shipley and Tank Bigsby not practicing,
- 1:25Speaker 1: that's something certainly to keep an eye on because the
- 1:29Speaker 1: Eagles are a little bit banged up there at running
- 1:31Speaker 1: back at the moment. They do have three on the
- 1:35Speaker 1: practice squad for those wondering. Damian Pierce, Carson Steele, and
- 1:40Speaker 1: Jaden Blue. So, again, we're way early in this. We'll
- 1:44Speaker 1: find out more Friday and Saturday. And that extra day
- 1:51Speaker 1: should be paramount in this particular circumstance. But the one
- 1:56Speaker 1: I'll be really keying in on is the Devontae Smith one.
- 2:00Speaker 1: you look at the limited list and Jalen Carter, not
- 2:03Speaker 1: really a surprise. Saquon Barkley, not really a surprise. He
- 2:06Speaker 1: was out there during stretching and the warmup period. So
- 2:11Speaker 1: he was practicing in some capacity, but I just, I
- 2:14Speaker 1: thought it was going to be in a limited capacity.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Sometimes those stinger injuries can be a little fickle. They
- 2:19Speaker 1: linger depending on the player. I think back to Jordan
- 2:23Speaker 1: Howard from a number of years ago, He had one,
- 2:26Speaker 1: and he battled that for a while. Now, that seemed
- 2:29Speaker 1: to be an extreme case here. Saquon Barkley is someone
- 2:34Speaker 1: who has not really dealt with a ton of injuries
- 2:39Speaker 1: here in Philadelphia. So we'll see what happens. There's still
- 2:43Speaker 1: plenty of time here. Jonathan Grenard with the pectoral. What
- 2:46Speaker 1: you're looking for eventually is you're looking for that full designation,
- 2:51Speaker 1: and he's been limited in every practice he's the regular
- 2:55Speaker 1: season so far. So that is something that you're going
- 3:00Speaker 1: to want to keep an eye on. Drew McCuba with
- 3:02Speaker 1: the knee. I mean, to me, it didn't seem like
- 3:05Speaker 1: he was moving all that well, not to.
- 3:07Speaker 2: His usual form. He's a really rangy type of player.
- 3:10Speaker 1: I don't think he was moving around as he usually
- 3:13Speaker 1: does in the Titans game.
- 3:15Speaker 2: I thought it was kind of noticeable.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Nothing overly extreme or anything like that, but something that Obviously,
- 3:25Speaker 1: Bears watching. The Eagles have Marcus Epps. They have Michael Carter.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Cooper DeGene plays safety and base. They have Kenny Moore,
- 3:33Speaker 1: who's on the practice squad, though he really hasn't repped
- 3:37Speaker 1: at safety. And he's brand new to this defense, so
- 3:40Speaker 1: it may take him a little bit of time to
- 3:42Speaker 1: get up to speed. But we did hear from Kenny
- 3:46Speaker 1: Moore and Zach Ertz today. And I will read for
- 3:49Speaker 1: you some of the quotes that I have here off
- 3:51Speaker 1: my instant transcription today. To give you guys an idea
- 3:56Speaker 1: and some background, Zach Ertz. Oh, man, it's special. Obviously,
- 4:01Speaker 1: some things have changed around here. The locker room's a
- 4:04Speaker 1: little bigger. The training room's a little better. But overall,
- 4:09Speaker 1: it was great to see the people that I've missed
- 4:11Speaker 1: for a long time. But, yeah, special be back for sure.
- 4:15Speaker 1: First practice back, he says, I don't know if I've
- 4:19Speaker 1: ever been more nervous for a walkthrough than today. Obviously,
- 4:23Speaker 1: the past nine months, nine and a half months have
- 4:28Speaker 1: been tough. Had a lot of emotions going through today.
- 4:31Speaker 1: A lot of prayers going through today just to try
- 4:33Speaker 1: and center myself. So there was definitely a lot of emotions.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Being back with Lane was definitely special. You know, we
- 4:40Speaker 1: started our career together 14 years ago. So to be
- 4:43Speaker 1: able to be back with him, it's something special. Overall,
- 4:47Speaker 1: it was a decent day. Some things I want to
- 4:49Speaker 1: improve on for sure. And just trying to get better
- 4:51Speaker 1: every day. With regard to how his knee feels, he said, yeah,
- 4:55Speaker 1: it feels good. Knee feels great. Obviously been nine and
- 4:58Speaker 1: a half months since I played football. So there's still
- 5:00Speaker 1: football shape to get in. There are some details that
- 5:03Speaker 1: I have to learn for a new offense. So I'm
- 5:06Speaker 1: trying to cram. I've spent the last two days really
- 5:09Speaker 1: grinding through the training camp playbooks and trying to learn
- 5:12Speaker 1: all these, all those and teaching myself because the coaches
- 5:15Speaker 1: here are grinding on the game plan for this week.
- 5:18Speaker 1: So I'm trying to do a crash course in this offense.
- 5:21Speaker 1: But overall, just trying to take it day by day, improve,
- 5:23Speaker 1: and show the coaches what I can still do. When asked,
- 5:27Speaker 1: do you think there will be a role for you
- 5:29Speaker 1: on Monday, he said it's up to the coaches. Obviously,
- 5:33Speaker 1: I'm not even on the active roster right now. So
- 5:35Speaker 1: for me, it's about going out there and prove that
- 5:38Speaker 1: I can make a difference in the game. If I
- 5:40Speaker 1: can't make a difference in the game, then I shouldn't
- 5:43Speaker 1: be out there. So it's up to me to go
- 5:46Speaker 1: out there and prove it every day that I can
- 5:48Speaker 1: make a difference still, whether it's year one or year 14.
- 5:51Speaker 1: That's always been my mindset that I got to go
- 5:53Speaker 1: out and practice hard and improve my craft every day.
- 5:56Speaker 1: And if the coaches feel like I can make a difference, great.
- 6:00Speaker 1: I'll be out there. If not, then I shouldn't be
- 6:02Speaker 1: out there. So with regard to. planning to come back,
- 6:15Speaker 1: wanting to come back, and all those things. He said,
- 6:17Speaker 1: I mean, there was never a plan to come back, obviously.
- 6:20Speaker 1: I never wanted to leave in the first place, so
- 6:21Speaker 1: let's just put that out there. When the opportunity finally
- 6:25Speaker 1: arose that I could come back, there's been times I've
- 6:30Speaker 1: asked in the past, and it didn't come to fruition
- 6:32Speaker 1: for whatever reason, but for me, it's just a blessing
- 6:35Speaker 1: to be back. If you told me when I got
- 6:36Speaker 1: hurt that I'd be back here in nine and a
- 6:38Speaker 1: half months practicing for the Philadelphia Eagles, you could have
- 6:41Speaker 1: signed me up then. So for me, this is the
- 6:44Speaker 1: place that I've always called home. This is the place
- 6:47Speaker 1: that everyone asks for. My favorite place to play is.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Everyone knows it's here. There are so many memories when
- 6:52Speaker 1: you're in a place for nine years, so it's special
- 6:55Speaker 1: to be back. We also heard from Kenny Moore, and
- 7:03Speaker 1: he had some interesting things to say, as one might expect. Really,
- 7:08Speaker 1: you could see why Nick Sirianni thinks so highly of
- 7:11Speaker 1: Kenny Moore. Very high character, at least seemingly, and Someone
- 7:16Speaker 1: who I think embodies what Nick Sirianni looks for in
- 7:20Speaker 1: terms of character, in terms of teammates. Just to bring
- 7:24Speaker 1: into that building, it just really seems to me like
- 7:28Speaker 1: Kenny Moore is going to fit the culture to a tee.
- 7:31Speaker 2: And he mentioned that it's been a roller coaster. I
- 7:34Speaker 2: can't lie. It's been a roller coaster. Good days, bad days.
- 7:39Speaker 1: But for the most part, it's really just finding peace
- 7:41Speaker 1: and finding myself through it all.
- 7:43Speaker 2: It's been a lot. It's been a lot.
- 7:45Speaker 1: But I think as an athlete, you just want to
- 7:47Speaker 1: feel yourself. You want to feel your best every single day.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Whether you're training in the offseason or going to work
- 7:53Speaker 1: during the season, you're searching for your best.
- 7:56Speaker 2: So I think that's the most important part.
- 7:58Speaker 1: And I found that I have the fire to play
- 8:01Speaker 1: at a high level on his few opportunities that were
- 8:07Speaker 1: out there. Waiting for the right opportunity, something specific. He
- 8:11Speaker 1: said it was more so stuff like that is always
- 8:14Speaker 1: in the hands of the representation.
- 8:16Speaker 2: It's not so much in the.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Player, but I think going through a time like free agency,
- 8:21Speaker 1: a lot of things are just out of your control.
- 8:24Speaker 1: I think your job resume is the plays that you
- 8:27Speaker 1: put on the field and your production and all that
- 8:29Speaker 1: stuff is more so the things that has to speak
- 8:33Speaker 1: for me whenever I'm out here running. But my job
- 8:36Speaker 1: is to most, uh, mostly just sit tight and wait
- 8:39Speaker 1: for everything to kind of unfold. But it, was a
- 8:43Speaker 1: lot of things that was just out of my control
- 8:45Speaker 1: and the way things happen just happen, you know? So
- 8:48Speaker 1: I embrace it and I'm looking forward to the next step,
- 8:51Speaker 1: but yeah, just glad to be here.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Let's see. What are you looking to prove or accomplish?
- 9:09Speaker 1: In this next chapter said, just proven a reset, proving
- 9:13Speaker 1: a reset and being at my highest again, being at
- 9:15Speaker 1: my highest again. And I got a lot more years
- 9:17Speaker 1: left in me to, to go get it. So glad to.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Be in green. And I know, I don't know. I'm
- 9:24Speaker 2: going to give you all I got. That's it. I'm sorry. Uh,
- 9:32Speaker 2: that's it. I'm sorry.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Uh, huh did you pick isaiah's brain about philadelphia and
- 9:44Speaker 1: playing here isaiah rogers former eagles cornerback is good friends
- 9:49Speaker 1: with kenny moore and so kenny moore said i was
- 9:52Speaker 1: like how was it over there and he loved it
- 9:55Speaker 1: he loved it he really did and this is better.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Fall is the season where everything gets busier, more calls,

- 12:32Speaker 1: He mentioned that he feels like a rookie again. He's
- 12:34Speaker 1: been a pro bowler, a team captain. Kind of being
- 12:38Speaker 1: in this situation... Where there's a pathway to an active
- 12:42Speaker 1: roster spot, but you're on the practice squad trying to
- 12:44Speaker 1: make a name for yourself.
- 12:46Speaker 2: That was the spirit of it. And he said, what's
- 12:49Speaker 2: it like? I mean, to.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Be quite frank with you, I gave up a lot
- 12:55Speaker 1: to be a practice squad player.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Kind of reset. That's the reset that I'm talking about, though. And,
- 13:01Speaker 2: you know, I did it once. I can do it again.
- 13:03Speaker 2: And I'm from, I'm D2. You know what I mean?
- 13:06Speaker 2: So division.
- 13:07Speaker 1: two players that's first and foremost and just having that
- 13:10Speaker 1: chip having that grit yeah this is what I'm what
- 13:15Speaker 1: I want to do you know what I mean and
- 13:16Speaker 1: a lot of people will call you crazy but I
- 13:19Speaker 1: think the decisions that you make in life would your
- 13:22Speaker 1: 80 year old self be proud of that and I'm
- 13:26Speaker 1: going to be proud of the opportunity and the challenges
- 13:29Speaker 1: that I put on myself for me to be my
- 13:31Speaker 1: best that's what it's all about lastly we'll get to
- 13:36Speaker 1: keeping himself in shape to jump into the regular season
- 13:40Speaker 1: after not participating in training camp. He said, I'm still
- 13:44Speaker 1: trying to figure out my preparation, still trying to figure
- 13:46Speaker 1: out the lay of the land around here.
- 13:49Speaker 2: It's honestly just about people.
- 13:50Speaker 1: It's about valuing people, asking the questions, leaning on teammates,
- 13:53Speaker 1: leaning on my coaches. And I think it's coach, player,
- 13:57Speaker 1: player coach as far as being prepared and, you know,
- 13:59Speaker 1: giving my best. What I can control is my effort,
- 14:02Speaker 1: my preparation with the playbook and how much time I'm
- 14:05Speaker 1: spending on the film and all the different avenues of
- 14:08Speaker 1: being the best football player that I can be.
- 14:12Speaker 2: So impressive stuff there from Kenny Moore.
- 14:14Speaker 1: I wanted to just give you guys some of what
- 14:19Speaker 1: those two guys had to say. I'm sifting through my transcription,
- 14:22Speaker 1: so I'm skipping over some of the ums and uhs
- 14:26Speaker 1: and and all that that's why I was I was
- 14:28Speaker 1: pausing in some areas because I'm trying to I'm trying
- 14:31Speaker 1: to read you the clean text here without without throwing
- 14:34Speaker 1: that stuff in there but yeah both players they exude
- 14:38Speaker 1: leadership they played a lot of football and we're going
- 14:43Speaker 1: to learn fairly soon what both have left. But I
- 14:47Speaker 1: can tell you this, my initial impression is that they're
- 14:50Speaker 1: going to bring a lot of value in terms of culture,
- 14:52Speaker 1: in terms of mentorship and leadership. That's just, with Zach Ertz,
- 14:57Speaker 1: you have that sense because he's been here before and
- 15:00Speaker 1: you know what you're getting already in terms of the
- 15:03Speaker 1: player and the person off the field. But with Kenny Moore,
- 15:08Speaker 1: all you're going off of is the reputation that he has.
- 15:12Speaker 1: And he's known as being a leader. He's known as
- 15:14Speaker 1: being someone who's been a good teammate. And that's what
- 15:18Speaker 1: the Eagles look for here. They look for high character
- 15:20Speaker 1: players who play football the right way.
- 15:23Speaker 2: They're tough.
- 15:24Speaker 1: And I think both players exude that. Now, it is
- 15:27Speaker 1: interesting to note that Zach Ertz's locker formerly belonged to
- 15:32Speaker 1: Elijah Moore, who moves a little bit further down the row.
- 15:35Speaker 1: But Zach Ertz's locker is stationed right next to Eli Stowers,
- 15:42Speaker 1: the Eagles' rookie tight end.
- 15:44Speaker 2: And so that's a pretty savvy move there.
- 15:49Speaker 1: I think if you're going to learn from anyone, if
- 15:51Speaker 1: you're Eli Stowers, who better than someone who has Hall
- 15:55Speaker 1: of Fame credentials, I believe, in Zach Ertz, who has
- 15:58Speaker 1: been a consummate professional for years, now 14 seasons, and
- 16:05Speaker 1: I think he's going to be someone who can serve
- 16:07Speaker 1: as a mentor and as that pass-catching specialist, which Zach
- 16:11Speaker 1: Hurts really is, he can certainly offer a few pointers.
- 16:16Speaker 1: He can help him with the mental side of things.
- 16:18Speaker 1: I just think he can be a tremendous resource for
- 16:21Speaker 1: a young player and maybe reach him in a way
- 16:24Speaker 1: and relate to him in a way that maybe coaches can't.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Coaches have their own job description and their own things
- 16:32Speaker 1: that they can do to help a player move along
- 16:35Speaker 1: and enhance their development but there's there's also something to
- 16:39Speaker 1: be said for a veteran player who's seen it all
- 16:41Speaker 1: who's been in different systems who's experienced the highs and
- 16:45Speaker 1: the lows and can kind of help reprogram their mind
- 16:49Speaker 1: or just maybe give them a different perspective and so
- 16:52Speaker 1: that i think that's a really uh a really smart
- 16:56Speaker 1: move to place their lockers next to each other. And
- 16:59Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to seeing how that relationship materializes over time.
- 17:04Speaker 1: That's going to do it for this episode of the
- 17:06Speaker 1: Checker Daily. I'm Andrew DiCecco, and I'll catch you all
- 17:08Speaker 1: on the next one.
