- 0:12Hello friends, It's Sean. Here it is Tuesday, It is the
- 0:1614th of May. Thanks for tapping on play here.
- 0:20I am and we are beginning a whole new book of the Bible
- 0:24today. And this, this, friends, is the
- 0:26first time we are going to split a book in half and not read the
- 0:30whole thing from beginning to end because we're going to be
- 0:33reading the book of Proverbs and Proverbs.
- 0:36You know, Proverbs, right? It's filled with these pithy
- 0:39little sayings about wisdom and advice in the way that we can
- 0:42live. But that is the second half of
- 0:45Proverbs. The first part of Proverbs, the
- 0:471st 9 chapters, is, is a dialogue between a father and a
- 0:51son or a teacher and a student as the the father teaches the
- 0:55young one about the nature of lady wisdom and how to live a
- 1:00wise life. And then it moves into the the
- 1:03sayings, the Sayings of Solomon, as they called.
- 1:06So what we're going to do is together over the next nine
- 1:09days, we are going to read these nine chapters of Proverbs that
- 1:13really set the stage. And then we are going to
- 1:17continue on Fridays reading Psalms.
- 1:19And at the end of the year we'll finish the book of Psalms.
- 1:22And then from next year we are going to begin on Fridays
- 1:25reading a chapter of Proverbs until we've read all the way
- 1:29through the book of Proverbs. So this, if you like, is
- 1:33Proverbs, the introduction, the setting of the stage where we'll
- 1:37learn all about this. And the beauty of Proverbs
- 1:40chapter one is the 1st 7 verses begins by by creating a lens and
- 1:46helping us kind of work out how are we going to interpret
- 1:50everything that we're going to hear and learn as we read this
- 1:53book together. So it is a cracker, and it is
- 1:56filled with good things, and we will talk more about it as we go
- 2:00each day reading through the proverbs.
- 2:02But how about today? Let us just begin.
- 2:05Let us sit down with the Father, with the instructor, with the
- 2:09teacher beside us, who is going to share with us all about
- 2:13wisdom and the wise ways that we can pursue wisdom rather than
- 2:19folly as we read together. Proverbs, Chapter One.
- 2:34These are the proverbs of Solomon, David's son, King of
- 2:38Israel. Their purpose is to teach people
- 2:42wisdom and discipline, to help them understand the insights of
- 2:45the wise. Their purpose is to teach people
- 2:48to live disciplined and successful lives, to help them
- 2:52do what is right, just and fair. These proverbs will give insight
- 2:57to the simple knowledge and discernment to the young.
- 3:01Let the wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser.
- 3:05Let those with understanding receive guidance by exploring
- 3:09the meaning of these proverbs and parables, the words of the
- 3:12wise and their riddles. Fear of the Lord is the
- 3:17foundation of true knowledge. But fools despise wisdom and
- 3:21discipline. My child, listen, When your
- 3:25father corrects you, don't neglect your mother's
- 3:27instruction. What you learn from them will
- 3:30crown you with grace and be a chain of honour around your
- 3:34neck. My child, if sinners entice you
- 3:38turn your back on them. They may say, come and join us.
- 3:41Let's hide and kill someone just for fun.
- 3:44Let's ambush the innocent. Let's swallow them alive like
- 3:47the grave. Let's swallow them whole like
- 3:50those who go down to the pit of death.
- 3:53Think of the great things we'll get.
- 3:55We'll fill our houses with all the stuff we take.
- 3:58Come throw in your lot with us. We'll all share the loot, my
- 4:03child. Don't go along with them.
- 4:06Stay far away from their paths. They rush to commit evil deeds.
- 4:11They hurried to commit murder. If a bird sees a trap being set,
- 4:15it knows to stay away. But these people set an ambush
- 4:19for themselves. They're trying to get themselves
- 4:22killed, such as the fate of all who are greedy for money.
- 4:26It robs them of life. Wisdom shafts in the streets.
- 4:32She cries out in the public square.
- 4:34She calls to the crowds along the Main Street, to those
- 4:38gathered in front of the city gate.
- 4:40How long you simpletons will you insist on being simple minded?
- 4:45How long will you mock us? Relish your mocking.
- 4:48How long will you fools hate knowledge?
- 4:51Come and listen to my council. I'll share my heart with you and
- 4:56make you wise. I called you so often that you
- 5:00wouldn't come. I reached out to you, but you
- 5:04paid no attention. You ignored my advice and
- 5:07rejected the correction I offered.
- 5:10So I will laugh when you're in trouble.
- 5:12I will mock you when disaster overtakes you, when calamity
- 5:16overtakes you like a storm, when disaster engulfs you like a
- 5:20cyclone, and anguish and distress overwhelm you.
- 5:24When they cry for help, I will not answer.
- 5:27Though they anxiously search for me, they will not find me, for
- 5:31they hated knowledge and chose not to fear the Lord.
- 5:35They rejected my advice and paid no attention when I corrected
- 5:39them. Therefore they must eat the
- 5:41bitter fruit of living their own way.
- 5:44Choking on their own schemes, the simpletons turn away from me
- 5:49to death. Fools are destroyed by their own
- 5:52complacency, but all who listened to me will live in
- 5:56peace, untroubled by fear of harm.
- 6:10Our Lord, the author of Proverbs, makes it all so clear
- 6:15that we need to love you, to know you, and to put you in the
- 6:22place of Lordship over our life. And that is the wisest thing we
- 6:27can possibly do. Lord, help us always put you on
- 6:33the highest seat, on that number one throne in our hearts, and
- 6:39then in all of our ways and actions today, tomorrow and
- 6:43every day that we can pursue you.
- 6:47And if we can do that, Lord you, bring us peace and take away our
- 6:53fear. So that's what we do right now.
- 6:57We come to you, we worship you. We submit to you our wise, wise
- 7:03God, and we look forward to, as we read through this book of
- 7:07Proverbs, to learning more about you and your wisdom for us.
- 7:12And we can pray all this and the loving name of Jesus I'm in.
