- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, what's up?
- 0:01Speaker 2: This is Jamie Miller. You're listening to Smallsy, now on KISS.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, on the show right now, meeting him in the
- 0:07Speaker 1: flesh for the very first time, Jamie Miller.
- 0:09Speaker 2: What's up, dude? So professional.
- 0:11Speaker 3: What?
- 0:11Speaker 1: Aren't I? Hey, great to meet you.
- 0:13Speaker 2: You too, man.
- 0:14Speaker 1: And congratulations.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Thank you so much. I appreciate it.
- 0:17Speaker 1: What a world you must be living in right now.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Life doesn't feel real right now, if I'm honest. Nothing
- 0:25Speaker 2: about life feels real, but it feels like the biggest blessing.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Okay, catch people up for people who don't know. They've
- 0:32Speaker 1: just heard Babydoll and they're like, who is this guy?
- 0:37Speaker 1: This song's incredible. But yeah, give them the background.
- 0:41Speaker 2: So I've been doing this for like nine years. My
- 0:44Speaker 2: career has kind of like gone a little bit up
- 0:46Speaker 2: and down. Had some success here and there. Took two
- 0:49Speaker 2: years off the past two years and then came back
- 0:52Speaker 2: with Babydoll. I feel like I needed something to say.
- 0:54Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 0:55Speaker 2: I feel like for a long time I was doing
- 0:57Speaker 2: everything that everybody else wanted me to be. If there
- 0:59Speaker 2: was a pop boy working at the time, they would
- 1:03Speaker 2: try and make me that pop boy and do all
- 1:05Speaker 2: the music that wasn't Jamie. And then I was like,
- 1:07Speaker 2: I'm going to give it my last shot this year.
- 1:10Speaker 2: And then I was just like, I'm going to do
- 1:11Speaker 2: the music I make. I'm not going to listen to everybody, anybody.
- 1:15Speaker 2: And I wrote a whole album.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Baby doll kind of was the first song to go
- 1:20Speaker 2: out there. And it kind of is that there's something
- 1:22Speaker 2: so beautiful about trusting your your gut. And I did
- 1:26Speaker 2: that and it kind of changed everything for me.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Isn't it, isn't it wild, right? When you, obviously incredibly talented, right?
- 1:34Speaker 2: Oh, thank you.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Of course. And an incredible, like honestly, an incredible voice,
- 1:39Speaker 1: like in the, in real life, like obviously on tape, incredible,
- 1:44Speaker 1: but like I saw you live the other night.
- 1:47Speaker 3: Wow.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Thank you, man. Isn't it crazy how like you can
- 1:50Speaker 1: have a great, an insane talent, but then, people push
- 1:54Speaker 1: you in a lane that's not necessarily authentic to you.
- 1:57Speaker 1: And then the moment you just go, you know what,
- 1:59Speaker 1: whatever happens, I'm just going to do me and take
- 2:01Speaker 1: it or leave it. And the, the moment you are
- 2:04Speaker 1: your real authentic self doing something you love, that's when
- 2:08Speaker 1: it takes off.
- 2:09Speaker 2: I literally, I had this conversation with my team this morning.
- 2:11Speaker 2: I was like, who knew?
- 2:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:13Speaker 2: I just had to be myself.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:14Speaker 1: And I was like, they do say that. Don't they?
- 2:16Speaker 1: Everyone says like, just be yourself. I wasted so many years,
- 2:20Speaker 1: not being myself.
- 2:22Speaker 2: It was like, I'm so grateful. It's like the best.
- 2:26Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Crazy right now.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Um, when did you know you could sing? Um, take me,
- 2:30Speaker 1: but like, when was that moment that, that realization, did
- 2:33Speaker 1: you always know where you were performing arts kid?
- 2:37Speaker 2: Well, I was, but I wasn't. So when I, when
- 2:40Speaker 2: I was like six, they were, you could either audition
- 2:43Speaker 2: to be in a school play or you could like
- 2:46Speaker 2: sit in a math class.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Okay. And you were like, get me out.
- 2:48Speaker 2: And I was like, I'm just going to audition.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Sure.
- 2:51Speaker 2: And then I just became obsessed. Even back then, seeing
- 2:53Speaker 2: people's reaction was like, oh, people like this. I think
- 2:57Speaker 2: I just wanted to be the center of attention.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Totally.
- 3:00Speaker 2: But then when I got to high school, I actually
- 3:01Speaker 2: stopped singing because I got bullied a little bit.
- 3:05Speaker 1: You did? A little bit.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I think back then kids weren't. As kind as they
- 3:09Speaker 2: are now.
- 3:10Speaker 1: No, they're worse now, I heard. Oh, really? I've heard
- 3:12Speaker 1: they're bad. I've heard the kids today are bad.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Oh, gosh.
- 3:14Speaker 1: But also, too, was it character building bullying?
- 3:15Speaker 2: It was.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Because, you know, pressure builds diamonds.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:19Speaker 1: And I think I was bullied.
- 3:21Speaker 2: You could say it was character building.
- 3:23Speaker 1: I mean, definitely didn't want to go to school. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Actually, sometimes, I'm not even joking, put the hair dryer
- 3:29Speaker 2: on my face so I could say to my mum
- 3:31Speaker 2: I had a fever so I didn't have to go
- 3:32Speaker 2: to school.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Oh, okay.
- 3:32Speaker 1: So it was pretty bad.
- 3:34Speaker 2: I think, for me, it was like all my friends
- 3:36Speaker 2: were rugby players and football players. Okay. I was the
- 3:38Speaker 2: singer of the group in a small hometown. The kid
- 3:40Speaker 2: wanted to be a singer. It's not like the coolest
- 3:44Speaker 2: thing to do.
- 3:45Speaker 3: True.
- 3:45Speaker 2: So I would go to choir class and I would
- 3:48Speaker 2: sit under the table so no one could see me.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Okay.
- 3:50Speaker 2: But anyway.
- 3:51Speaker 1: That's the saddest thing. I know. But look at you now.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Look at me now, baby.
- 3:54Speaker 1: That's it. Look at you now.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Okay.
- 3:57Speaker 1: The new song, Baby Doll. Yeah. Give us a 411
- 3:59Speaker 1: on the track because then I want to talk about
- 4:01Speaker 1: this insane viral response that you've been having from some
- 4:05Speaker 1: huge names.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:08Speaker 2: I just wrote the song. I remember writing it with
- 4:10Speaker 2: my two best friends, Hayley and Michael. And just in
- 4:14Speaker 2: the moment, I was like, God, this is like, makes
- 4:16Speaker 2: me so happy. It brought me so much joy. And
- 4:19Speaker 2: I think for most of my career, I've done sad,
- 4:21Speaker 2: sad music. So I didn't really think I would ever
- 4:23Speaker 2: make an imprint on the world with a happy song.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Okay.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Because I think my whole career has just been sad.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Been kind of depressed my whole career. And then, yeah,
- 4:32Speaker 2: I posted it and the reaction was like, from the
- 4:34Speaker 2: first video, it was like pretty intense. Like, just positive. Like,
- 4:38Speaker 2: from all corners of the world like kids in africa
- 4:41Speaker 2: to like young my nephew is like uh has autism
- 4:45Speaker 2: yeah and he doesn't know any lyrics to any song
- 4:48Speaker 2: but he knows the song to baby doll oh wow
- 4:50Speaker 2: and that became a like kind of a phenomenon with
- 4:53Speaker 2: like kids with autism and then it kind of was
- 4:55Speaker 2: like trickled into like adults and grandma and grandpas and
- 4:58Speaker 2: then i don't know it's just like the most beautiful
- 5:00Speaker 2: thing to watch something i wrote in the studio come
- 5:03Speaker 2: to life in a way that I've never seen before.
- 5:06Speaker 1: And it gets like, when they, when something goes like
- 5:08Speaker 1: viral or the way it has, it sort of gets
- 5:10Speaker 1: out of your control a little bit, right? Like you
- 5:12Speaker 1: wake up every day and someone else has done something
- 5:15Speaker 1: to it or someone else has shared it. And it, it,
- 5:18Speaker 1: it becomes out of your reach, right? Like they become,
- 5:20Speaker 1: you know, some artists say like the song is, becomes
- 5:23Speaker 1: the people's song. This is like one of those moments
- 5:25Speaker 1: where that song becomes everybody's and it's no longer yours, right? Totally.
- 5:29Speaker 2: I think the thing that is funny, cause it's, People
- 5:31Speaker 2: were asking me like, what's the main thing that's changed?
- 5:33Speaker 2: Every morning I go to Starbucks.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Okay.
- 5:36Speaker 2: And I get myself a venti strawberry refresher.
- 5:39Speaker 1: That's the most LA thing I have heard you say.
- 5:43Speaker 1: No one cared.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Like I'll order my refresher and I'll go. All of
- 5:46Speaker 2: a sudden now.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Okay.
- 5:48Speaker 2: It's like.
- 5:49Speaker 3: Oh my gosh baby doll I'm like oh no you
- 5:52Speaker 3: can't this is good can I get it for free
- 5:54Speaker 3: please yeah but no it's just like I don't know
- 5:57Speaker 3: it's like such a everyone's being so kind and yeah
- 6:00Speaker 3: I don't.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Know so but Jennifer I saw Jennifer Love Hewitt she
- 6:03Speaker 1: shared it yep she did she reached so she reached out.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Um she i yeah i saw a video of a
- 6:09Speaker 2: post in it yeah then i she's one of my
- 6:12Speaker 2: favorite actors absolutely yeah me and my mom's favorite show was.
- 6:15Speaker 1: The ghost whisperer okay yep great love.
- 6:17Speaker 2: You jennifer um we became very i love her and i.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Like that was that 9-1-1 show yeah she's still in
- 6:22Speaker 1: there right yeah she's so iconic and she changed honestly
- 6:25Speaker 1: i i owe a lot to the song being so
- 6:28Speaker 1: successful because she brought in a fan base that i
- 6:30Speaker 1: don't think would have seen it. So what did Trisha
- 6:32Speaker 1: Paytas do? Cause that's also, she, I, she is mad
- 6:36Speaker 1: as a cut snake and I love her.
- 6:39Speaker 2: I am obsessed with Trisha Paytas. I think she is,
- 6:43Speaker 2: I'll be honest. I bought tickets to a show last
- 6:46Speaker 2: year at the Greek theater.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Okay.
- 6:48Speaker 2: As a fan, I bought VIP.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Oh, you did?
- 6:51Speaker 2: I am, dude, she has been like the staple of my, what.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Era of Trisha Paytas do you love?
- 6:55Speaker 2: Everything from her crying in the kitchen to, I am
- 6:59Speaker 2: a Trisha Paytas stan.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:01Speaker 2: She knows this now. Yeah. I'm obsessed with her.
- 7:03Speaker 1: I love her. That was a good moment for me.
- 7:04Speaker 1: There's so much lore of Trisha Paytas that I love,
- 7:07Speaker 1: including but not limited to, she always has children after
- 7:11Speaker 1: the death of someone very famous, and she believes her
- 7:13Speaker 1: kids are reincarnated of those people. As they should be.
- 7:16Speaker 1: She's iconic.
- 7:16Speaker 2: It's Trisha's world. We're just living in it.
- 7:19Speaker 1: This is so true. And then now tell me about
- 7:23Speaker 1: Antonio from off campus, because literally two seconds ago, he
- 7:25Speaker 1: was FaceTiming you. Yeah. Like what's, what's this bromance? How
- 7:29Speaker 1: did this happen?
- 7:29Speaker 2: Dude, I'm like, he's quickly became my best friend. Like
- 7:33Speaker 2: he is absolutely an incredible human being. Um, but yeah,
- 7:37Speaker 2: I posted a song, I posted baby doll, um, and
- 7:40Speaker 2: the off campus fans found it. And then something happened
- 7:44Speaker 2: with like people reaching out to each other's teams. And
- 7:45Speaker 2: then Antonio commented on a video and I was a
- 7:48Speaker 2: fan of him from his Broadway stint.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Yep. And off campus.
- 7:53Speaker 2: And off campus.
- 7:54Speaker 1: And off campus. Of course. Yeah, of course.
- 7:55Speaker 2: But I'm just saying I was an OG.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Okay. Yeah, you were there at the very beginning.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Sure. Yep.
- 8:00Speaker 2: And then I messaged him and I was like, I
- 8:03Speaker 2: would love for you to hop on Babydoll. And I
- 8:04Speaker 2: was like, haha, joking. Yeah. And then he replied and
- 8:07Speaker 2: he was like, well, if you're actually serious, then I'd
- 8:10Speaker 2: love to do it. And then he just so happened
- 8:11Speaker 2: to be flying into Los Angeles for like a commercial
- 8:14Speaker 2: he was doing. And we had this lovely studio we
- 8:17Speaker 2: recorded in. And yeah, just became very, very quick friends.
- 8:21Speaker 1: That's cool. Yeah. I love that. And then you're about
- 8:24Speaker 1: to go on tour with Jonas Brothers.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:27Speaker 1: That's going to be fun. Stop me when I'm giving
- 8:29Speaker 1: you something that you're like living, having like an out-of-body experience.
- 8:33Speaker 2: You have to remember, this is all happening in real time.
- 8:36Speaker 2: No one cared about me like nine weeks ago.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:38Speaker 2: So it's a very dystopian time right now.
- 8:40Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:41Speaker 1: So this has all changed very quickly.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Very quickly.
- 8:44Speaker 1: You're jumping on the show with the Jonas Brothers. That's
- 8:46Speaker 1: going to be fun. You're going to be playing to
- 8:47Speaker 1: a whole bunch of new people who will discover who
- 8:50Speaker 1: you are.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Yeah. 20,000 people each night.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Are you nervous? What have you got left in the kitty?
- 8:55Speaker 1: Have you got more songs? Because now you've worked out
- 8:58Speaker 1: being yourself is the secret to the success.
- 9:01Speaker 2: To be honest, I have a whole album now. I
- 9:04Speaker 2: kind of finished the album before Babydoll came out. So yeah,
- 9:08Speaker 2: I just have a full album that I love and
- 9:10Speaker 2: I can't wait to share with the world. And everything
- 9:12Speaker 2: that's happening right now, I'm just going to try to
- 9:15Speaker 2: stay present for.
- 9:16Speaker 1: I love it. Give me the 411 on the actual track,
- 9:19Speaker 1: the baby doll. What's it about? What's it about? Who
- 9:23Speaker 1: is baby doll?
- 9:24Speaker 2: Just finding your person. I'm not going to lie, I'm
- 9:28Speaker 2: the most single I've ever been in my life.
- 9:30Speaker 1: You couldn't have time for a relationship.
- 9:32Speaker 2: It's kind of just manifesting my person to come out there.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Just being so in love with someone. If it's going
- 9:39Speaker 2: to be anyone that hurts me, it's got to be you.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Love it. All right. 60 seconds with Jamie Miller. Are
- 9:45Speaker 1: you ready to go? Lightning round. No time to think.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Okay.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Don't say the wrong thing, but let's go. Nickname?
- 9:52Speaker 2: JJ.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Coffee order?
- 9:54Speaker 2: Vanilla latte.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Something friends would say about you behind your back?
- 9:58Speaker 2: He's a twat. I'm joking. I don't know. Very kind.
- 10:02Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Would they say you're kind?
- 10:04Speaker 2: I would think so.
- 10:04Speaker 1: And a twat.
- 10:05Speaker 3: And a twat.
- 10:05Speaker 1: A kind twat. A kind twat. Do they understand what
- 10:08Speaker 1: twat means here in LA? No. No, they would look
- 10:11Speaker 1: at you. What's your favorite aisle at the supermarket? Ooh,
- 10:14Speaker 1: ice cream. Really?
- 10:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:16Speaker 1: You know, I like the personal hygiene aisle where, like,
- 10:19Speaker 1: deodorants and all of that jazz. That's my favorite aisle.
- 10:22Speaker 3: Okay.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Yeah, that says something about me. Your age is really
- 10:24Speaker 1: showing right now. Yeah, sure. Do you use your own
- 10:27Speaker 1: Netflix account or are you mooching off someone?
- 10:29Speaker 2: I use my own.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Okay.
- 10:31Speaker 3: As for Hulu.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Yeah. What would you say your worst habit is?
- 10:37Speaker 2: My worst habit? Okay, so I eat crisps. Yeah. And
- 10:40Speaker 2: then I have to, like, have, like, a drink whilst
- 10:44Speaker 2: the crisps are still in my mouth.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Kind of weird. Yeah, no, but the next one was
- 10:48Speaker 1: going to be like an instant ick, but you just
- 10:51Speaker 1: described it. Oh, okay, perfect. Yeah, like that's pretty gross.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Okay, perfect.
- 10:56Speaker 1: But what do you think is an instant ick if
- 10:58Speaker 1: you saw it?
- 10:59Speaker 2: What do you do if it was like you? Instant
- 11:04Speaker 2: ick is someone trying to be cool. Like someone trying
- 11:06Speaker 2: to be cool. Yeah. Like chill.
- 11:08Speaker 1: And they trip or something as they walk. Oh, yeah.
- 11:12Speaker 1: What was the last food you ordered on Uber Eats?
- 11:15Speaker 2: Sugarfish. It's a sushi restaurant in LA.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Sugarfish.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Oh, you need to go.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Is it good?
- 11:20Speaker 2: Uh-huh.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Just went to Sushi Samba. That's very good. Oh, come on, Rich. Yeah. Yeah.
- 11:25Speaker 1: I got that radio money. And then do you believe
- 11:28Speaker 1: in ghosts?
- 11:29Speaker 2: I do believe in ghosts.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Have you... Because whereabouts in the UK are you from?
- 11:32Speaker 2: I'm from Wales.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Okay. I'm sure the town you're from has got old
- 11:37Speaker 1: buildings in it. 100%. Have you ever been in a
- 11:40Speaker 1: building that you have thought has been haunted? Or have
- 11:43Speaker 1: you seen something... My house. Your house was haunted.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Just, can you tell me?
- 11:49Speaker 2: My, we, my mom and dad actually told me this
- 11:51Speaker 2: story the other day and I brought memories back, but
- 11:54Speaker 2: like we used to have this dining table and he
- 11:56Speaker 2: used to like move around on his own.
- 11:58Speaker 1: The table.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Yeah. I used to have a really big fear of
- 12:01Speaker 2: like the dark.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:02Speaker 2: I would say, I, I don't even know. I just
- 12:04Speaker 2: feel like there should be a show.
- 12:05Speaker 1: I used to see shit. Yeah. Did you lay?
- 12:08Speaker 3: Okay.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Weird. Weird. Cause I have, I think I've seen ghosts.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Have you ever, did you lay in bed as a kid?
- 12:14Speaker 1: and feel like there was someone, a presence in the
- 12:17Speaker 1: room watching over you when you slept and you're just like,
- 12:20Speaker 1: please go away, please go away, please go away. Yeah, 100%.
- 12:22Speaker 2: That's why you have to turn to God, baby.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what's weird. What about that table that moved?
- 12:27Speaker 1: Did it move? How much did it move?
- 12:28Speaker 2: It was like a massive marble table. You can't move
- 12:30Speaker 2: it and it'd be like in the corner when it'd
- 12:33Speaker 2: be in the middle.
- 12:34Speaker 1: You'd wake up in the morning and the whole thing
- 12:36Speaker 1: had moved? Yeah.
- 12:37Speaker 2: And you can ask my mom and dad, by the way,
- 12:38Speaker 2: get them on the Schmozy show if you need it.
- 12:40Speaker 1: That is the scariest.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Yeah, it's wild.
- 12:43Speaker 1: I don't know how you stayed there as a kid.
- 12:44Speaker 1: I would have been blipping out.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Literally.
- 12:47Speaker 1: When are you going to come back to Australia? We
- 12:49Speaker 1: would love to have you.
- 12:51Speaker 2: I would love to come.
- 12:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:53Speaker 2: I am coming back in the beginning of next year.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Okay, so it's already locked in.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Okay, well, I'll find out the info off the air
- 12:59Speaker 1: and then we will slowly leak the details. Let's go, baby.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Congratulations on everything.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Thank you, man.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Thanks for having me over to this place. Of course.
