- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30So today we are talking about being curious and the power of
- 0:37being curious in the sense that if you focus your attention on
- 0:43being the most curious person you can be, how it shifts your
- 0:46life. So curiosity to me is a
- 0:51superpower. People will often, you know,
- 0:54wonder about what their gifts are and if they have any gifts,
- 0:59and that often comes up where I don't know what my gifts are.
- 1:01Well, there are some really basic gifts that we all have,
- 1:06but we radically underuse. And curiosity is to me, an
- 1:10absolute superpower, and one of the ones that I think is so
- 1:15intrinsically underused and shamefully so because it is a
- 1:21true and just a gift from have and above.
- 1:26Because it is something that is so built into us as human
- 1:32beings, but we shut it down because we think, well, I don't
- 1:36want people to think I'm nosy if I ask questions or I don't want
- 1:39to seem stupid. That's the one that typically we
- 1:42hear, you know, I want to seem asking questions because I don't
- 1:45want to seem stupid. Well boy, that's the one that
- 1:49kills me because I will say this, it is absolutely a state
- 1:55of robbing yourself when you go to that place.
- 1:57Because how in God's name are we supposed to learn anything if
- 2:01we're not curious and asking questions and putting ourselves
- 2:05out there and being super curious?
- 2:08When I was little, I was even more curious than I am now, and
- 2:12I think I'm hyper curious now, obviously because of what I do.
- 2:15I ask people questions all day long and try to help them figure
- 2:18things out for themselves. But when I was little, I was an
- 2:22absolute obsessive reader. I was constantly curious about
- 2:26things and I asked lots of questions and I talked a lot and
- 2:30I had lots of ideas and I would throw things out and ask
- 2:34teachers. And I spent a lot of time in
- 2:38trouble for that trait. My middle school years, 6th, 7th
- 2:43and 8th grade, were not my happiest years of my life, and
- 2:47in fact, they were probably like most of us, some of the most
- 2:50miserable years of my life. And there were a series of
- 2:54teachers at that point in time that really tried to.
- 2:57One particular one really tried to break me of the habit of
- 3:02asking questions and talking and being curious and constantly
- 3:07telling me that I needed to be quiet.
- 3:11I needed to just listen, sit there and conform.
- 3:15That was a word he would use. Just conform.
- 3:17Would you please just conform? And it was very, very difficult
- 3:22for me. My parents, you know, they did
- 3:26the best they could with what they had.
- 3:28But I was a very good student. I had very good grades.
- 3:32So they couldn't understand when I would complain, well, you're
- 3:35getting good grades. So the evidence on that side was
- 3:39don't worry about her, she's fine.
- 3:41But internally for me it created a a place of anxiety.
- 3:45It created a place where I questioned myself constantly
- 3:48because I couldn't believe that in some way, shape or form that
- 3:53I was in a spot where I couldn't ask questions and I was
- 3:59constantly, like I said, in trouble.
- 4:01So much that I spent a good portion of 6th, 7th and 8th
- 4:05grade with my desk facing a wall at the back of the room and
- 4:11having to work all by myself way at the back of the room.
- 4:13I also had to spend hours writing dictionary for asking
- 4:17questions or talking, and it was an arduous process.
- 4:22But here's the and the reason I'm telling you the story
- 4:26because I didn't give up and I was so like, OK, I'm just not
- 4:29I'm not changing this I because it was the burning desire inside
- 4:33of me to be curious. And at the time when I was
- 4:36little, there were no and when I was in 6th, 7th and 8th grade,
- 4:39there was no Internet to go to. At that point in time.
- 4:42It was just starting off, but we certainly didn't have it.
- 4:45And it was not something that I had the privilege of having a,
- 4:48you know, access to. I was on my own with this, and
- 4:53it was old school books, reading things, learning about them, and
- 4:57of course asking questions. And I just never, ever, ever
- 5:02gave up on that fact that I was going to shift that part of
- 5:05myself because I knew inside. Somehow, someway, I knew inside
- 5:10that it was OK to do this. I don't know how.
- 5:12I can't explain to you how I knew it, but I always said
- 5:16someday I'm going to make sure everybody knows that being this
- 5:19curious and being this way is not something that's, you know,
- 5:23a detriment to who you are as a person.
- 5:26It's actually a superpower, and it's a gift.
- 5:28Because of that curiosity, because of my intense
- 5:31questioning, because of the way that I allowed myself to
- 5:34progress through this process, I ended up working for some of the
- 5:38coolest people in the world and them complimenting me on the
- 5:41fact that I had a different way of thinking.
- 5:44And it was all because of that root of me never giving up the
- 5:48ability to be curious and to just pour into it.
- 5:53Why is this important to you? Because I know somebody out
- 5:56there listening has been told the same things that I've been
- 5:59told. I know somebody out there
- 6:00listening is curious and doesn't want to disrupt the the car, if
- 6:05you will, and ask questions and put themselves out there.
- 6:08And I'm just telling you that. Don't give up on your
- 6:12superpower. Be the person that learns.
- 6:15Be an avid learner. Ask questions.
- 6:19Look for those pieces that you can plug into yourself that make
- 6:25you feel like wow, I learned something today everyday.
- 6:28Make it a goal to be curious and learn something new everyday.
- 6:32Pour into this piece of yourself and you will start to see how
- 6:36much more in world you are appreciated and called upon.
- 6:40Because most people walk around completely disconnected.
- 6:45As we know, watching TikTok completely checked out and not
- 6:50it's connecting with anybody and learning anything.
- 6:52So if you do yourself this favor, you will be a standout
- 6:56and that's why you're here, right?
- 6:57You're showing up here because you want to figure out how to be
- 6:59a standout or curiosity is a way to do it.
- 7:02So I hope you have an incredibly blessed day and I will see you
- 7:07tomorrow.
