Speaker 1: Yeah, it's pretty amazing when your feed back and I
• 0:02
Speaker 1: was just and want sort of working through to the
• 0:04
Speaker 1: two there and five. Seriously, say twenty years on, I
• 0:08
Speaker 1: think it's ten uc to actually finish up with glossa shyear.
• 0:11
Speaker 1: Do you miss cricket at all in terms of playing
• 0:13
Speaker 1: or is the teaching side of things that you talk
• 0:15
Speaker 1: about the business you're obviously also coaching with that program.
• 0:20
Speaker 1: Does that tick the competitive edge or the sporting age
• 0:24
  Speaker 1: for you?
• 0:27
  Speaker 2: Sort of?
• 0:28
  Speaker 3: You know, it's it's you know, I've loved what I
• 0:32
Speaker 3: do at the school and definitely the fact of still
• 0:34
Speaker 3: being involved in cricket. I think the one thing that
• 0:37
Speaker 3: can happen is when you come out of a professional
• 0:39
Speaker 3: career and what you move to next. And quite a
• 0:42
Speaker 3: few players over here do you go into a school
• 0:44
Speaker 3: and they think you're you're not really massively into it.
• 0:49
Speaker 3: But it's sort of for me not really the case.
• 0:53
Speaker 3: It's it's kept those sort of cricket juices going and
• 0:57
Speaker 3: being involved in the cricket here. It's so it's kept
• 1:00
Speaker 3: away and it's actually sort of coming full circle where
• 1:04
Speaker 3: it's given me that point now where my boys are
• 1:07
Speaker 3: getting older and as they come towards the end of school,
• 1:10
  Speaker 3: it's it's what's next. And actually I'm sort of thinking
• 1:12
Speaker 3: about getting back into into cricket full time, so it's
• 1:16
Speaker 3: it's it's that sort of stuff.
• 1:17
Speaker 2: So cricket, cricket here.
• 1:19
Speaker 3: At schools has been amazing. And business studies teaching that
• 1:23
Speaker 3: is something different. Learning about the classroom environment. It's a
• 1:26
Speaker 3: bit like a dressing room. How do you get you know,
• 1:29
Speaker 3: everyone in the class working in the direction you want.
• 1:32
Speaker 3: So it's been it's been great since I've finished, and
• 1:34
Speaker 3: it's been it's been interesting, that's for sure.
• 1:39
Speaker 1: You talking about youtubo boys and I believe you meet
• 1:41
Speaker 1: your wife when you first sort of moved over to
• 1:43
Speaker 1: the UK from from Queensland. I guess you would have
• 1:46
Speaker 1: been early to be twenty set that stage. So are
• 1:47
Speaker 1: they following your footsteps? They must be, as you see
• 1:50
Speaker 1: close to the any if I'm writing in terms of
• 1:52
Speaker 1: my mathematics, not always a strong suit for a journalists,
• 1:55
Speaker 1: but sometimes we get there.
• 1:58
  Speaker 4: They must.
• 1:58
Speaker 1: Yeah, are they follow your footage in terms of the
• 2:00
Speaker 1: cricket or are they doing a couple of other things?
• 2:02
Speaker 1: So you said the rugby, a couple of the other
• 2:04
  Speaker 1: sports over there.
• 2:06
Speaker 2: Yeah, So Reese is my oldest.
• 2:07
Speaker 3: He's sixteen, so he's got two years of school left
• 2:13
Speaker 3: and he's a fantastic little hockey player. Actually he plays
• 2:18
Speaker 3: recently started being playing for Cancery men's first team and
• 2:22
Speaker 3: he got me on the match on the weekend, so he's.
• 2:24
Speaker 2: Hockey is his thing.
• 2:24
Speaker 3: He does play a bit of social cricket at the
• 2:27
Speaker 3: village that I'm involved with, so he definitely does that.
• 2:30
Speaker 3: And then his younger brother Tom, who's fourteen, is a
• 2:34
Speaker 3: little bit of a pocket going away with the rugby.
• 2:37
Speaker 3: He loves his rugby, so that they are playing sport.
• 2:42
Speaker 3: Cricket's too hard, so I'm glad they've tried.
• 2:44
Speaker 1: Something else, saying he's still got your full hitd of here,
• 2:49
Speaker 1: so you've done well there, which I cannot claim. And
• 2:51
Speaker 1: just going through I think your profile, I think I
• 2:54
  Speaker 1: think you're a week older than me, so we're a
• 2:55
Speaker 1: similar aid. So if it's that hard, that's a reasonable thing.
• 3:03
Speaker 4: Background and I remember this being a big deal back.
• 3:07
  Speaker 4: I guess I was.
• 3:08
Speaker 1: Yeah, I would have been through university and I think
• 3:10
Speaker 1: as a news journalist at the time in Melbourne, but
• 3:12
Speaker 1: I remember the Australian or the Australian born person who's
• 3:16
Speaker 1: well Pupu gu Guinea born but Australian raised player about
• 3:19
Speaker 1: to debut for England. And there's been a couple of
• 3:21
Speaker 1: different instances of that sort of through the years of
• 3:23
Speaker 1: different player from different countries here as well, and.
• 3:26
Speaker 4: It's happened in the UK.
• 3:29
Speaker 1: How did a kid who was born in Papua New
• 3:31
Speaker 1: Guinea race in Toomba, played cricket in Brisbane end up
• 3:37
  Speaker 1: playing for England?
• 3:39
Speaker 3: Yeah, pretty remarkable really, as you said, sort of outlined
• 3:44
Speaker 3: my first twenty twenty one years living in Australia from
• 3:49
Speaker 3: the age of six. So yeah, born in p ANDNG
• 3:51
Speaker 3: moved towards when as a family when I was six,
• 3:55
Speaker 3: and then in nineteen ninety eight was that was when
• 3:58
Speaker 3: I came over to the UK full time.
• 4:00
Speaker 2: I just came over for a summer.
• 4:02
Speaker 3: I was playing a decent level in Brisbane, so I
• 4:05
Speaker 3: had played for Benny Logan in the Brisbane A grade competition.
• 4:09
Speaker 3: I had been involved in the Queensland Academy Sport with
• 4:13
Speaker 3: that cricket, played a little bit of second eleven cricket.
• 4:17
Speaker 3: But then sort of a player who had gone down
• 4:21
Speaker 3: to South Australia keep it a try, try sort of
• 4:24
Speaker 3: luck down there, came back to Queensland and he was
• 4:27
Speaker 3: brought straight back into it.
• 4:28
Speaker 2: So that sort of left me in a position where I.
• 4:31
Speaker 3: Sort of looked at stuff and I said, well, okay,
• 4:33
Speaker 3: let's just I've got a British passport through my parents.
• 4:36
Speaker 3: Let's go over and play some club cricket again in England,
• 4:40
Speaker 3: which I'd done when I left school. So that was
• 4:43
Speaker 3: in nineteen ninety five. I'd gone over a summer, absolutely
• 4:46
Speaker 3: loved it, and I just sort of said, well, let's
• 4:48
Speaker 3: go for a summer and I left my I met
• 4:51
Speaker 3: my wife that year. She claims then my future career
• 4:54
Speaker 3: from everything on because I stayed and didn't go back
• 4:59
  Speaker 3: to Australia.
• 5:00
Speaker 2: And you know, but there was a few years where
• 5:04
Speaker 2: I was doing other things.
• 5:05
Speaker 3: I actually started off doing a bit of course for
• 5:09
Speaker 3: it to be a pharmacy assistant, so not the full pharmacist,
• 5:14
Speaker 3: because I was living with a good friend of mine's parents.
• 5:17
Speaker 3: So I was working and playing club cricket and trying
• 5:20
Speaker 3: to work out what was going and then I wrote,
• 5:24
Speaker 3: I wrote to several counties just asking for a trial.
• 5:27
Speaker 3: And by that point I was I was early twenties,
• 5:30
Speaker 3: and you know, his generally you've been in the system
• 5:34
Speaker 3: from fifteen sixteen, so I went. I went to different
• 5:37
Speaker 3: indoor schools around the country and trialed with sixteen seventeen
• 5:40
Speaker 3: year olds and I the reason that Kent asked me
• 5:46
Speaker 3: back was because the first first ball I faced to spin,
• 5:49
Speaker 3: I ran down the wicket and whacked it back over
• 5:52
Speaker 3: the bowler's head and they sort of because they saw
• 5:56
Speaker 3: me do that sparked an interest and obviously you know
• 6:00
Speaker 3: they'd seen my CV and went from there where they
• 6:03
Speaker 3: invited me back again for pre season and then that
• 6:07
Speaker 3: I had a summer where I was working full time
• 6:09
Speaker 3: in the pharmacy and traveling to all the Kent Second
• 6:12
Speaker 3: eleven games and got offered a professional contract from there.
• 6:15
Speaker 2: So that was in the start of two thousand and
• 6:19
  Speaker 2: one was.
• 6:19
Speaker 3: My first professional contract with Kent and then September two
• 6:24
Speaker 3: thousand and three was when I first went on my
• 6:26
  Speaker 3: first England tour.
• 6:27
Speaker 2: So it was pretty dramatic rise.
• 6:30
Speaker 3: And quite an incredible one and there wasn't long before
• 6:33
Speaker 3: we got to the Ashes in two thousand and five.
• 6:36
Speaker 4: So a couple of great mate.
• 6:37
Speaker 1: It's a rite of passage for every young Australian who
• 6:39
Speaker 1: fancies some stuff with getpat to try and get over
• 6:41
Speaker 1: and play some county, or with the ball to try
• 6:44
Speaker 1: and play some county, or more of the pointing.
• 6:46
Speaker 4: I suppose a lot of levels and live the life
• 6:48
  Speaker 4: in the UK.
• 6:48
Speaker 1: And I've got some great mates who've done what you
• 6:51
Speaker 1: did and moved over and never come back. They met
• 6:53
Speaker 1: their wives over there and have got their families and
• 6:55
Speaker 1: love life. But the spinners only would face spin. Where
• 6:59
Speaker 1: did you pick up spin? How could you? Who were
• 7:02
  Speaker 1: you facing?
• 7:02
  Speaker 4: Any Brisbane?
• 7:03
Speaker 1: Was it was there someone that you you're learning against
• 7:06
Speaker 1: Sinton one? But what was the trick there?
• 7:09
Speaker 2: I don't think it was a trick. It was just
• 7:10
Speaker 2: a bit of I think it was.
• 7:12
Speaker 3: It was you know, my natural way of playing was
• 7:16
Speaker 3: quite an aggressive way, and in and in Australia you
• 7:19
Speaker 3: do try and you know, do try and dominate the
• 7:22
Speaker 3: spin and so using your feet is a is a
• 7:24
Speaker 3: way you do it. So I didn't necessarily grow up
• 7:27
Speaker 3: sweeping that much. It was more more the traditional to
• 7:31
Speaker 3: use your feet, get get to the bounce of it
• 7:33
Speaker 3: and play it that way. And that's so that instinct
• 7:36
Speaker 3: just took over first ball. It wasn't a it wasn't
• 7:39
Speaker 3: on purpose or anything like that. I did a few thinks.
• 7:41
Speaker 3: I just I did it and found myself okay. You
• 7:44
Speaker 3: know he got me in trouble over my career for sure.
• 7:46
Speaker 3: And you know one of the ones, if you talk
• 7:48
Speaker 3: about it, is you know when Warne got me out
• 7:50
Speaker 3: at trent Bridge where I ran down the wicket and.
• 7:53
Speaker 2: Tried to whack him out of Nottingham. Didn't quite work
• 7:55
  Speaker 2: and got out.
• 7:56
Speaker 3: But that was just the I suppose, the natural way
• 7:59
Speaker 3: in which I went around playing spin.
• 8:02
Speaker 2: I tried to be aggressive and it worked.
• 8:04
Speaker 3: Because that was the coach who was watching me in
• 8:07
Speaker 3: that trial session at ken Was he said that if
• 8:11
  Speaker 3: I hadn't seen you do that ball, I probably wouldn't
• 8:13
Speaker 3: have asked you back. So it's amazing how small little
• 8:15
Speaker 3: there is quite a few moments across my career which
• 8:18
Speaker 3: something has happened, which is call it luck, call it
• 8:23
Speaker 3: sort of doing the right thing. But that is one definitely,
• 8:25
Speaker 3: if if he hadn't watched me play that one bore
• 8:29
  Speaker 3: it actually.
• 8:29
Speaker 2: Wasn't wouldn't be sitting here talking to you now.
• 8:33
Speaker 1: You go on the tour of the West Sindees A
• 8:36
Speaker 1: really good profile in the Guardian from two thousand and
• 8:38
Speaker 1: four and we're talking about your upbringing and your background,
• 8:40
Speaker 1: and I think you'd had any interview at that stage
• 8:42
Speaker 1: with the journalists and you talked about all of that,
• 8:44
Speaker 1: and you talked about Michael Vaughan present you with the opportunity.
• 8:48
Speaker 1: I think Chris Reid had he'd been dropped as we
• 8:52
Speaker 1: could keep it well, the opportunity came for you to
• 8:54
Speaker 1: have that chance in the West Indies. Yeah, must have
• 8:57
Speaker 1: been quite the world when not quite the experience for you.
• 9:00
Speaker 3: Yeah, amazing because before that, I'd say in the September,
• 9:04
Speaker 3: I'd gone on my first tour to Bangladesh and then
• 9:07
Speaker 3: Sri Lanka that was pre Christmas, and then it was
• 9:10
Speaker 3: the West Indies after Christmas.
• 9:12
Speaker 2: And that's that was the Fifth Test is where I
• 9:14
  Speaker 2: made my debut.
• 9:15
Speaker 3: And I sort of looked at the the itinery of
• 9:18
Speaker 3: that series and and ready was in possession and doing
• 9:22
Speaker 3: doing doing well. And but I looked at it before
• 9:26
Speaker 3: that Fifth Test there was a practice match and so
• 9:30
  Speaker 3: I thought, right, well, there's a there's a chance that
• 9:33
Speaker 3: I'll get an opportunity to play in that. And if
• 9:36
Speaker 3: Chris has been playing really well and it's still in
• 9:40
Speaker 3: the you know, still that's fine. But if if there's
• 9:43
Speaker 3: a there might be a window where in that match,
• 9:46
Speaker 3: if I do well, I could get an opportunity in
• 9:48
Speaker 3: that last Test match.
• 9:49
Speaker 2: And and that was the case. That's the way it
• 9:52
  Speaker 2: played out.
• 9:52
Speaker 3: But again we talk about moments I was, I was
• 9:56
Speaker 3: bold for one or two off off an a ball
• 10:00
Speaker 3: in that practice match, but then I went on to
• 10:03
Speaker 3: get fifty odd night.
• 10:04
  Speaker 2: Out and.
• 10:05
Speaker 3: Then that led to Varney sort of having a chat
• 10:07
Speaker 3: with me in the in the nets and the lead
• 10:09
Speaker 3: up to that fifth Test match and telling me then
• 10:11
Speaker 3: that that I was in That's.
• 10:13
Speaker 4: An amazing sort of.
• 10:16
Speaker 1: We have the fortune of working with him through Fox Cricket.
• 10:20
Speaker 1: We'll be talking to him about the series set are
• 10:22
Speaker 1: about to through the next couple of weeks leading into
• 10:25
Speaker 1: the summer. I'll ask you quickly about the century against
• 10:29
Speaker 1: New Zealand before we drill into that that famous series.
• 10:32
  Speaker 4: How was that?
• 10:34
Speaker 1: Did you have a moment of fortune in that one
• 10:35
Speaker 1: or was that that all fine?
• 10:37
Speaker 4: Smoothly off the bat?
• 10:39
  Speaker 3: I think I think, for one, I think I played
• 10:41
Speaker 3: pretty well in that innings. I peaked early. It was
• 10:44
Speaker 3: my third third Test match to get that hundred. And
• 10:50
  Speaker 3: now it's it's your dream isn't it that it's the
• 10:53
Speaker 3: pinnacle to get one hundred at test match level?
• 10:56
Speaker 2: Is a judgment factor, isn't it If you can you
• 10:58
  Speaker 2: can do that?
• 11:00
Speaker 3: And so yeah, that innings were it Just yeah, it
• 11:03
Speaker 3: flowed really well. I'd actually I recall I'd played New
• 11:07
Speaker 3: Zealand in a warm up match for Kent, so I
• 11:11
Speaker 3: sort of had had an idea who I was coming
• 11:13
Speaker 3: up against, and so yeah, so yeah, just incredible up Aheadingly,
• 11:19
Speaker 3: I think I got it off the just a shot
• 11:21
Speaker 3: off the back foot behind point to go to get
• 11:24
Speaker 3: those couple of runs to and you know that special moment.
• 11:27
Speaker 3: I have a you know, there is a picture where
• 11:28
Speaker 3: I've got my arms up sort of looking up to
• 11:31
Speaker 3: up to the sky when I got it, And so yeah, no,
• 11:34
  Speaker 3: quite amazing, but.
• 11:36
Speaker 2: Probably the one if you have regret.
• 11:38
Speaker 3: I don't really have any regrets in my sport, but
• 11:41
Speaker 3: the one regret wasn't and you mentioned it in the
• 11:43
Speaker 3: in the opening, that I didn't get a second hundred.
• 11:46
Speaker 3: I got close, and I should have got one in
• 11:48
Speaker 3: two thousand and five, but to get one is still incredible.
• 11:52
Speaker 1: Really, I will get into the two thousand and five
• 11:57
Speaker 1: series anmum, we'll drill into it in a bit of detail,
• 11:59
Speaker 1: because I said, I'm from this is the right side
• 12:02
Speaker 1: of me. I'm putting together a feature and already had
• 12:04
Speaker 1: a couple of good chats with some of the a
• 12:07
Speaker 1: couple of the Australians, your counterpart with the Gloves, Adam Gilchrist.
• 12:13
Speaker 4: He said some couple of fascinating things to me sort
• 12:15
Speaker 4: of about that series and how I'm supposed to start with.
• 12:19
Speaker 1: You said, he sensed that England was coming in a
• 12:21
Speaker 1: white ball series the year before. He thought, yep, this
• 12:25
Speaker 1: English team that we're coming up against is going to
• 12:27
Speaker 1: be a real challenge. And then you go through the
• 12:29
Speaker 1: names of the players twenty years on and there are
• 12:31
Speaker 1: just some champion players on both sides, big reputations, great
• 12:36
Speaker 1: contributors to the sport. The first Test and forgive me,
• 12:39
Speaker 1: I've got a couple of notes here, so I'll read
• 12:41
Speaker 1: through it. But just we started started Lord's Australia win
• 12:44
Speaker 1: by two hundred and thirty nine runs.
• 12:47
Speaker 4: England knocks them over for one ninety in the first
• 12:50
Speaker 4: first series. First Test.
• 12:54
Speaker 1: Respond with one fifty five, but Kevin Peterson debuts fifty
• 12:58
Speaker 1: seven and sixty four. I think you take four catches
• 13:01
Speaker 1: in the first sinnings of the of the series, which
• 13:04
Speaker 1: is a good, good start. I think you made a
• 13:08
Speaker 1: thirty of that one hundred and fifty five as well,
• 13:11
Speaker 1: so it wasn't a bad contribution. But what can you
• 13:14
Speaker 1: remember of that And did you cop a bit of
• 13:16
Speaker 1: lift from the Aussies as a result of your back
• 13:18
Speaker 1: you know, your background.
• 13:19
Speaker 4: Did you cop much from them at that time?
• 13:22
Speaker 3: To be honest, no, I think because I'd come over
• 13:27
Speaker 3: to the UK under the radar a bit. Yes, I'd
• 13:30
Speaker 3: played a grade cricket for four years over in Australia
• 13:35
Speaker 3: and there I'd come across Casper Andrew Simon's, Matthew Mott,
• 13:39
Speaker 3: you know, Maddy Hay and these these sort of guys
• 13:42
Speaker 3: who so I had a level of understanding and playing
• 13:45
Speaker 3: against these players. I think that that definitely helped going
• 13:48
Speaker 3: into that series. But also whether they'd forgotten me or whatever.
• 13:53
Speaker 3: But you talk about the stick that previous Australians had
• 13:58
Speaker 3: got coming over and playing for ings, and so there's
• 14:00
Speaker 3: a guy I played a bit with, Ken Martin McCaig,
• 14:04
Speaker 3: you know, he was one going back, but I think
• 14:06
Speaker 3: he had played sort of higher level.
• 14:09
  Speaker 2: Than I had.
• 14:09
Speaker 3: I think, you know, I think he played some shield
• 14:11
Speaker 3: cricket and some higher representative stuff.
• 14:14
Speaker 2: So so that was a bigger transition for him.
• 14:17
Speaker 3: And more so, I think I slipped under the radar
• 14:19
Speaker 3: a bit and that helped.
• 14:22
Speaker 2: But yeah, leading into that series, you you know that
• 14:25
  Speaker 2: first Test.
• 14:26
Speaker 3: Match walking out lords so walking from the changing room
• 14:31
Speaker 3: through the you know, through the pavilion where the members
• 14:34
Speaker 3: are going out onto the grass that first morning was
• 14:38
Speaker 3: one of the most brilliant memories I have out of
• 14:41
Speaker 3: out of cricket because it was sort of like a
• 14:43
Speaker 3: we had a shoulder width corridor which all the way down,
• 14:46
Speaker 3: so from the way the home dressing rooms you have
• 14:49
Speaker 3: to go down some stairs and and so just the
• 14:51
Speaker 3: noise walking out that first morning was utterly incredible. And
• 14:54
Speaker 3: then you know, we bowled first and at lunch I
• 14:58
Speaker 3: think we had him five down and and so the
• 15:01
Speaker 3: sort of the reception we got going through that long
• 15:05
Speaker 3: room again was was even better than walking out that morning.
• 15:09
Speaker 3: But yeah, they sort of changed a bit from them
• 15:11
Speaker 3: and you mentioned how much we lost by but yeah,
• 15:14
Speaker 3: definitely KP set a bit of a marker out in
• 15:17
Speaker 3: that in that first first Test. Yeah, I've got the
• 15:20
Speaker 3: chance to bat with him for quite a bit of it,
• 15:22
Speaker 3: and we we'd seen how good KP could be because
• 15:26
Speaker 3: in South Africa in the One Day series he'd got
• 15:28
Speaker 3: three hundreds out of the seven matches there, and so
• 15:31
Speaker 3: he he forced his way in to that and so
• 15:34
Speaker 3: he wanted to make an impact and he definitely definitely
• 15:37
Speaker 3: did that with in that first first Test match. And
• 15:41
Speaker 3: I'm glad you highlighted the four catches I took because
• 15:43
Speaker 3: what sticks with me is the two I dropped.
• 15:45
Speaker 2: You know, clearly strom their mind, ye, and that's yeah.
• 15:52
Speaker 3: So if I talk me going into that series, I
• 15:56
Speaker 3: still probably in my head and in journalists had as well,
• 16:00
Speaker 3: I still wasn't the settled choice of who should be playing.
• 16:03
Speaker 3: So there was always that scrutiny around around what I
• 16:07
Speaker 3: did and that series, you know, as we go through
• 16:10
Speaker 3: each Test match, but really defined in my career because
• 16:14
Speaker 3: I made mistakes. I dropped catches the whole way through
• 16:17
Speaker 3: my career. There's no getting away from that. But what
• 16:20
Speaker 3: I felt I bounced back pretty well from them, and
• 16:24
Speaker 3: I always defined my career on sort of my contributions.
• 16:30
Speaker 2: My stats are terrible.
• 16:31
Speaker 3: I'm glad you didn't bring up too many of those,
• 16:33
Speaker 3: because I don't like looking at the stats. I sort
• 16:35
Speaker 3: of look back and think, right, what did I contribute
• 16:38
Speaker 3: to the team, what important stuff? And across that series
• 16:41
Speaker 3: and in that first Test match I sort of I
• 16:44
Speaker 3: did lay a bit of a marker out with a
• 16:46
Speaker 3: bat and went from there again and going into that
• 16:50
Speaker 3: epics second Test, I had some confidence, but there was
• 16:54
Speaker 3: also with the gloves.
• 16:55
Speaker 2: I knew I needed to sort of do some better work.
• 17:00
Speaker 1: I'll get to the second Test and the second It's
• 17:02
Speaker 1: interesting talk about I remember reading in that profile you
• 17:04
Speaker 1: talked about how it was always very much a team
• 17:07
Speaker 1: sport for you, like it had to be a team
• 17:09
Speaker 1: sort of and people will play their roles. You also
• 17:11
Speaker 1: talked about Rod Marsh in that story or there was
• 17:14
Speaker 1: apparently not being necessarily happy to he got the gloves
• 17:16
Speaker 1: initially in the West Indies, now an iconic Australian keeper
• 17:19
Speaker 1: and you had to have a chat to win that
• 17:22
Speaker 1: was he still I can't remember if he was still
• 17:23
Speaker 1: coaching or was he still involved with England for that
• 17:25
  Speaker 1: five series?
• 17:26
  Speaker 4: I can't remember.
• 17:28
Speaker 3: Okay, the when he wasn't happy was the West Indies
• 17:34
Speaker 3: because you know Red he was an unbelievable people there's
• 17:38
Speaker 3: you know, and he'd been through the academy that Rod
• 17:41
Speaker 3: had overseen and so fully understandable.
• 17:44
Speaker 2: Rod was backing his player that he's come through. And
• 17:49
Speaker 2: but I always got on with Rod well, you know,
• 17:51
Speaker 2: he had those conversations with the management behind.
• 17:54
Speaker 3: But I had been down to the Academy in Australia
• 17:56
Speaker 3: when I was must be about eighteen. I was, I
• 18:00
Speaker 3: I've been on a two week sort of scholarship to
• 18:03
Speaker 3: go down there, so I'd had interactions with rodin along
• 18:06
Speaker 3: the way, and so, yeah, our relationship was fine, it
• 18:09
Speaker 3: was absolutely but yeah he was he was just backing
• 18:11
Speaker 3: as man. And so when I did see him again
• 18:13
Speaker 3: in two thousand and five, yeah, we're absolutely fine. But yeah,
• 18:18
Speaker 3: he wasn't happy in the West Indies, Let's put it
• 18:20
  Speaker 3: that way.
• 18:22
Speaker 1: At the end of that, at the end of that
• 18:25
Speaker 1: Lord's Test and Gilchrist Tommy needs as entail, which I'm
• 18:30
Speaker 1: not sure if you're aware of it, but they he
• 18:32
Speaker 1: said they headed down in the rooms every drink with England.
• 18:34
Speaker 1: Afterwards England went dead. You know, do you know what
• 18:36
Speaker 1: unfolded in the rooms there?
• 18:39
  Speaker 2: No?
• 18:39
Speaker 3: But no interesting to hear because I suppose my memory
• 18:43
Speaker 3: is the flip side of us going up into their
• 18:46
Speaker 3: changing rooms, and it's something that I wanted to do
• 18:49
Speaker 3: personally because you know, Australian was full of legends, you know,
• 18:55
Speaker 3: one one to eleven was utterly incredible players. But like
• 18:59
  Speaker 3: I s, I'd played against a few of them and
• 19:02
Speaker 3: I just wanted to go and break that aura down
• 19:05
Speaker 3: and go into the changing rooms and sit there and
• 19:08
Speaker 3: have a beer and just sort of in a way
• 19:10
Speaker 3: take me back to well, I've played against some of
• 19:12
Speaker 3: these guys in Great Cricket and Brisbane, you know, so
• 19:15
Speaker 3: let's just think about it that way.
• 19:16
Speaker 2: That's what you know, let's go break down those barriers.
• 19:19
Speaker 3: So yeah, but I can't remember if they came and
• 19:21
Speaker 3: knocked on the door and we didn't answer or what.
• 19:23
Speaker 1: But yeah, what a Gillie Well no, only I mean
• 19:26
Speaker 1: he suggests they did something and he said, karma came
• 19:28
Speaker 1: back to biteas and I'll reveal it by text message
• 19:31
Speaker 1: to you afterwards. Reason that's the case. But he did
• 19:35
Speaker 1: say that. He said what they also took from it
• 19:37
Speaker 1: was that this was an England team that was there
• 19:39
Speaker 1: to win and not just there for niceties, and that they.
• 19:42
Speaker 4: Knew even though they got the first Test and they
• 19:44
Speaker 4: were happy with that.
• 19:45
Speaker 1: Way had gone that this was a team that was
• 19:47
Speaker 1: desperate to win by the time they got to and
• 19:49
Speaker 1: and and so I approved, you get you get to
• 19:52
Speaker 1: you get to Edgefiston for the second Test, Glenn McGraw
• 19:56
Speaker 1: walks on the ball. Can you remember that? And what
• 19:58
Speaker 1: the feeling was from there? And and that amazing test.
• 20:01
Speaker 1: England four hundred and seven in the first Indies Australia
• 20:04
Speaker 1: responded with three hundred and eight England one hundred and
• 20:06
Speaker 1: eighty two in the second innings two hundred and seventy nine.
• 20:10
Speaker 1: It gets down to the couple of runs Kasper Wilson,
• 20:14
Speaker 1: Lee Badding, Harmerson delivers and you take the great catch,
• 20:19
Speaker 1: one of the I assume one of the highlights of
• 20:21
  Speaker 1: your career.
• 20:23
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 20:23
Speaker 3: Yeah, if it wasn't for that catch, you know when
• 20:26
Speaker 3: people ask me about it, I just I'm known for
• 20:28
Speaker 3: one catch basically, that's but but yeah, So to rewind that,
• 20:33
Speaker 3: going back to that first morning, the warm up morning,
• 20:37
Speaker 3: they were just going about our going about our business there, definitely,
• 20:40
Speaker 3: but then we could tell that there was a bit
• 20:42
Speaker 3: of a kerfuffle going on over to where the Aussies
• 20:45
Speaker 3: were warming up, and so we looked over and we
• 20:50
Speaker 3: could sort of see a huddle, and then words started
• 20:53
Speaker 3: to filter that that Glennard sort of injured himself and
• 20:56
Speaker 3: we could we could see that it was him on
• 20:58
Speaker 3: the floor, and so yeah, so that sort of took
• 21:02
Speaker 3: a lot of people's sort of mindset away from what
• 21:06
Speaker 3: was going on and thinking what's going on over there,
• 21:08
Speaker 3: And then word came out that he stood on the board,
• 21:10
Speaker 3: it injured himself and he's not going to play in that,
• 21:12
  Speaker 3: and you.
• 21:13
Speaker 2: Know, then Ricky put us into bat.
• 21:16
Speaker 3: You know, we go on to score four hundred and
• 21:18
Speaker 3: really set that Test match up. And you talked about
• 21:21
Speaker 3: our mindset and that that we made a real effort
• 21:25
Speaker 3: from the start of that summer to stand toe to
• 21:28
Speaker 3: toe with the Aussies, and you know, we had two
• 21:31
Speaker 3: one day series leading up to that Test match and
• 21:35
Speaker 3: we had a T twenty, first ever T twenty between
• 21:38
Speaker 3: the two sides, and in each of those matches we
• 21:41
Speaker 3: did that and we got confidence from it and we
• 21:44
Speaker 3: we realized that we could take them on and we
• 21:47
Speaker 3: weren't going to take a backward step.
• 21:48
Speaker 2: And so that was our bit of a theme for
• 21:50
  Speaker 2: the summer.
• 21:51
Speaker 3: And so to to go and score four hundred on
• 21:53
Speaker 3: that first day of that second Test Match really set
• 21:56
Speaker 3: that up again as bounced back right. We knew we
• 21:59
Speaker 3: had to win it. If we if we didn't win
• 22:01
Speaker 3: Test two, that was it. His potential history is going
• 22:04
Speaker 3: to repeat and the Aussies were we're going to run
• 22:07
Speaker 3: away with that series. And so that was a big
• 22:09
Speaker 3: moment scoring four hundred, and then on that last day,
• 22:14
Speaker 3: you know, we walked out there, I think there was
• 22:15
Speaker 3: his need one hundred and twenty odd to win. You'd
• 22:20
Speaker 3: a couple of wickets for us to get. You'd expect
• 22:22
Speaker 3: it to be a bit of a done deal. And
• 22:23
Speaker 3: I think a lot of the crowd did as well.
• 22:25
Speaker 3: And I do remember walking out that that morning. You've
• 22:30
Speaker 3: got the fanatics where they're you know, they wear their
• 22:34
Speaker 3: yellow shirts, and there was.
• 22:37
Speaker 2: A group of there.
• 22:38
Speaker 3: O love them, yeah, but there was a group of
• 22:42
Speaker 3: them together and they they were sort of singing the total,
• 22:46
Speaker 3: counting it down, and I remember walking out they started
• 22:49
Speaker 3: singing the singing and that sort of just resonated, Oh
• 22:52
Speaker 3: that doesn't quite sit right. I don't like just and
• 22:54
Speaker 3: then of course as it got lower and lower and lower,
• 22:57
Speaker 3: that that got louder. There was a few things happened
• 23:01
Speaker 3: which there's a bit of byplay between me and them.
• 23:03
Speaker 3: I think Harmony bold one which hit the footholes down
• 23:06
Speaker 3: legs side and it bounced over my head and went
• 23:08
Speaker 3: for four buys and so that so then we had
• 23:11
Speaker 3: a bit of bie played between that, and then there's
• 23:13
Speaker 3: other you know, the way Shane Warren got out on
• 23:16
Speaker 3: that last morning, he kicked the stumps over in incredible fashion.
• 23:20
Speaker 3: It's just a weird, weird dismissal. So that happened. Simon
• 23:24
Speaker 3: Jones dropped the catch down at third man. But all
• 23:28
Speaker 3: the time Brett Lee was batting incredibly bravely, being joined
• 23:32
Speaker 3: by Casper, and I just kept telling me, telling myself
• 23:37
Speaker 3: when it got down to those single figures, there will
• 23:40
Speaker 3: be another chance. It's likely to come my way. Make
• 23:45
Speaker 3: sure you take it. And I just get that, like
• 23:47
Speaker 3: a mantra, has just kept on each each ball, be
• 23:49
Speaker 3: ready to be ready. And then yeah, so Harmy bowl
• 23:53
Speaker 3: that bouncer to Casper. And I do like the fact
• 23:57
Speaker 3: that twenty years on, the catch is embellished. It's of
• 24:00
Speaker 3: it's spoken about as this big specky down legs side,
• 24:03
Speaker 3: but actually I'll be honest, it floated a bit off
• 24:06
Speaker 3: the glove. And you know, I had to move a
• 24:08
Speaker 3: bit down legs side, but that that moment is still
• 24:12
Speaker 3: in slow motion in my mind, you know, sort of
• 24:14
Speaker 3: seeing it hit the glove, watching it take, watching it
• 24:18
Speaker 3: into my gloves, rolling over to then look up to
• 24:21
Speaker 3: see Billy Bowden started putting that crooked finger up. So
• 24:26
Speaker 3: so that moment and then the euphoria after that, I
• 24:33
Speaker 3: made sure I went and said thank you to your support,
• 24:35
Speaker 3: to the fanatics, and.
• 24:40
Speaker 2: Quite an emotional thank you.
• 24:42
  Speaker 1: I was.
• 24:42
Speaker 3: First of all, I broke through the shackles of Marcus Trascothic.
• 24:46
Speaker 3: He tried to stop me once I got through that,
• 24:49
Speaker 3: and then Ashley Giles had to go. So but that
• 24:52
Speaker 3: was just because of the moment, you know, winning by
• 24:54
Speaker 3: two runs, and that was you know, the emotion that
• 24:58
Speaker 3: came out of me at that point was again huge
• 25:02
Speaker 3: and so yeah, and just an incredible moment because we
• 25:07
Speaker 3: knew we were back in the series at that point,
• 25:08
Speaker 3: and but from them walking out to what was a
• 25:12
Speaker 3: given thing in the morning to get that close and
• 25:14
Speaker 3: all those emotions, it was, yeah, pretty amazing and.
• 25:20
Speaker 1: Still considered one of the finest tests, which is which
• 25:23
Speaker 1: is you know, an astonishing thing given the history of
• 25:26
Speaker 1: the two nations and Test, cricket in general, and it's
• 25:29
Speaker 1: also the scene of one of the well, well you're
• 25:32
Speaker 1: giving it to the fanatics, one of the iconic photos
• 25:35
Speaker 1: in cricket, a young Andrew flintoftened and Brett Lee.
• 25:40
Speaker 4: We can you know what about that sort of moment
• 25:42
Speaker 4: in terms of sport.
• 25:44
Speaker 3: Yeah, well that sort of summed it up, isn't it,
• 25:48
Speaker 3: with you know some Freddie up that he recognized too,
• 25:52
Speaker 3: that the efforts of Binger put in that morning and
• 25:55
Speaker 3: how you know he could sort of tell that how
• 25:58
Speaker 3: deflated he was, and how to get that close. You know,
• 26:02
Speaker 3: if I flip my emotions too, as if it was
• 26:05
Speaker 3: me batting the other way, and to get that close
• 26:07
Speaker 3: and to get out, it's oh, you'd be you know,
• 26:10
Speaker 3: it would have been devastating. So yeah, that that picture
• 26:14
Speaker 3: of Fred going and shaky whilst we're we're off celebrating.
• 26:17
Speaker 2: None of us knew that was going on. And it
• 26:19
Speaker 2: was only after the fact.
• 26:20
Speaker 3: That we we saw that, saw that photo and seen
• 26:25
Speaker 3: seeing what happened. And yeah, so yeah, but that that's
• 26:28
Speaker 3: just some sort of thread up in the way he
• 26:30
Speaker 3: would he played the played the game.
• 26:32
Speaker 1: So the third Test, yeah, you almost get them, and
• 26:35
Speaker 1: and and and the Aussies. Hang on, how how are
• 26:38
Speaker 1: the emotions after that third Test?
• 26:42
Speaker 2: Yeah, well we it's.
• 26:43
Speaker 3: Sort of reinforced to us that we're on the right path,
• 26:46
Speaker 3: that we're we got close. Ricky Ponting played a stunning,
• 26:50
Speaker 3: stunning innings and he's got one hundred and fifty six
• 26:53
Speaker 3: and again I caught I caught him for that. But
• 26:56
Speaker 3: without that Ricky Ponting innings, we would have won that
• 26:59
Speaker 3: Test match. And so that was probably one of the
• 27:00
Speaker 3: best innings of an opposition player that I saw in
• 27:04
Speaker 3: the situation. But what we also huddled at the end
• 27:07
Speaker 3: of that Test match was to look and watch the
• 27:09
Speaker 3: Aussies celebrating a draw, which for the Australian side to
• 27:15
Speaker 3: celebrate a draw was something which gave us a boost
• 27:19
Speaker 3: again to get so although we would have what we
• 27:22
Speaker 3: love to have win, won that match, just turn around
• 27:25
Speaker 3: and see, hang on, look at the Aussies they're celebrating
• 27:27
Speaker 3: that draw. It was it was the next boost going
• 27:30
Speaker 3: into Trent Bridge, that the fourth fourth one which sort
• 27:35
Speaker 3: of you know, Freddie and I had a massive partnership
• 27:38
Speaker 3: and but again the end of that Test match was
• 27:42
  Speaker 3: another epic finish.
• 27:45
Speaker 4: Well, a couple of on that.
• 27:46
Speaker 1: So Freddy players amazing and really signals himself as a
• 27:49
Speaker 1: as a as a start of the sport. You make
• 27:52
Speaker 1: an eighty five court and bold to Casper, I wonder
• 27:55
Speaker 1: how that one sits within now, and.
• 28:00
Speaker 4: Ricky pointing gets rattled, very rattled.
• 28:02
Speaker 1: And Gilly talks about that, how you know Gary Pratt
• 28:07
Speaker 1: amazing sort of fielder, and he talked, I'm going to
• 28:09
Speaker 1: try and give him to Gary as well, but he
• 28:11
Speaker 1: talks about how he was known as a fielder after that,
• 28:13
Speaker 1: where he could clearly play in bat, but how to
• 28:17
Speaker 1: find his sort of career.
• 28:19
Speaker 4: What an amazing test it was for some reasons.
• 28:23
Speaker 2: Yeah, it was incredible.
• 28:25
Speaker 3: You know, personally, it still burns me that I've got
• 28:29
Speaker 3: caught and bowled off an inside edge. Yeah, and so
• 28:33
Speaker 3: so so with that that that still stings. But then
• 28:38
Speaker 3: the finish with Gilo hitting the winning runs, Matthew Hogard
• 28:42
Speaker 3: hitting a cover drive for four off Brettley to get
• 28:47
Speaker 3: to that so and even me getting getting out, I
• 28:50
Speaker 3: tried to whack warning back over his head for six
• 28:52
Speaker 3: because it would have taken us, wouldn't have taken us
• 28:54
  Speaker 3: to single figures.
• 28:55
Speaker 2: So so but to get.
• 28:58
Speaker 3: Across the line and that put a two one up,
• 29:01
Speaker 3: so that going into that final Test match where ahead,
• 29:04
Speaker 3: we're full of confidence. We're going to the Oval, which
• 29:07
Speaker 3: we knew was a wicket that suited us and was
• 29:11
Speaker 3: just a good cricket wicket.
• 29:12
Speaker 2: So yeah, we were full of.
• 29:15
Speaker 3: Confident going into that last Test match, but we still
• 29:18
Speaker 3: knew we had a job to do.
• 29:22
Speaker 1: And of course you get there to the Oval, the
• 29:24
Speaker 1: forecast didn't look great, but you battered exceptionally well. Three
• 29:28
Speaker 1: hundred and seventy three for Threndred and thirty five the
• 29:30
Speaker 1: Oss make three sixty seven but couldn't basically, you know,
• 29:33
Speaker 1: the last day it's all over that they make four
• 29:36
Speaker 1: runs and England win the ashes. How was the celebrations
• 29:41
Speaker 1: over the next few days, and then I'll ask you
• 29:45
Speaker 1: about the I suppose that the parade and I read
• 29:48
Speaker 1: a fascinating thing about you dressed as you dressed as
• 29:53
Speaker 1: a dartk or something like that.
• 29:55
Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, mad epic is a way to to talk
• 30:01
Speaker 3: talk about the celebrations, you know, even from from from
• 30:06
Speaker 3: that iconic moment where the bails were lifted. We were
• 30:08
Speaker 3: as a group in the changing rooms. The umpires had
• 30:11
Speaker 3: given us a bit of a heads up so we
• 30:15
Speaker 3: were as a group, all the backroom staff, all the players,
• 30:18
Speaker 3: arms and arm and arm linked in a big circle.
• 30:20
Speaker 3: And then when we got the knock on the door
• 30:22
Speaker 3: just to say right, it's over, we're going to go
• 30:24
Speaker 3: take it, that just erupted and then we got the
• 30:26
Speaker 3: opportunity to walk down go on that victory lap. I'd
• 30:31
Speaker 3: picked out a couple of mates that I saw saw
• 30:34
Speaker 3: in there, so for me it was it was again
• 30:36
Speaker 3: it was about that.
• 30:36
Speaker 2: Even when we went out.
• 30:38
Speaker 3: That night, to a big degree, I had some mates
• 30:42
Speaker 3: along with me and so it's pretty incredible to think
• 30:47
Speaker 3: back on what we did over those few days in
• 30:50
Speaker 3: terms of you know that the bus ride going to
• 30:53
Speaker 3: number ten and yeah, the bus ride is where there's
• 30:56
  Speaker 3: a photo, I've got a I've got an inflatable on
• 31:00
Speaker 3: my head. You know, it's sort of quite a big one.
• 31:03
  Speaker 3: It's got Ossie's exterminated. And I did it for a
• 31:06
Speaker 3: little while and I said, what are you doing, your wally,
• 31:08
Speaker 3: And then the the England women were behind us in
• 31:12
Speaker 3: the bus because they had won as well, and so
• 31:13
Speaker 3: I chucked it back to them to do it. So
• 31:17
Speaker 3: but yeah, and then going to Trafolga Square with the
• 31:21
Speaker 3: you know, the tens of thousands of people in there.
• 31:24
Speaker 3: So for me, let's you know, we bring it full
• 31:27
Speaker 3: circle to a lad that basically grew up into Womba,
• 31:30
Speaker 3: moved moved to Brisbane from my final year of school
• 31:33
Speaker 3: and then to be to be on that on that journey,
• 31:37
Speaker 3: on that ride was you know, it was quite surreal,
• 31:39
Speaker 3: and you know, it's sort of when I think about it,
• 31:43
Speaker 3: how when people ask me about it, and then even that,
• 31:45
Speaker 3: you know, we all got the m B s and
• 31:47
Speaker 3: you know everyone's got views on that as well, but
• 31:50
Speaker 3: go into the palace and to be awarded the n
• 31:53
Speaker 3: B and so for me that it was what it was,
• 31:56
Speaker 3: it was justification of all the hard work that I've
• 31:58
Speaker 3: done to get into that, into that position of playing
• 32:03
Speaker 3: international cricket and contributing and adding some values. So those
• 32:08
Speaker 3: few days of enjoyment were sort of justification for all
• 32:12
Speaker 3: that sort of dedication I've done.
• 32:16
  Speaker 1: Well, look, I think we've we've been a minute left,
• 32:19
Speaker 1: so I'll say thank you so much for joining the podcast.
• 32:22
Speaker 1: It's been brilliant to go back to three your career,
• 32:25
Speaker 1: through that amazing series itself and get some regulations. I
• 32:30
Speaker 1: will ask with about forty four seconds ago how much
• 32:33
Speaker 1: you're looking forward to this series coming up, and from.
• 32:35
Speaker 2: You, yeah, oh, they're really looking forward to it.
• 32:39
Speaker 3: It's I think the England side of obviously going over
• 32:42
Speaker 3: with mindset of pace and sort of going to hit
• 32:47
Speaker 3: the Aussies with a full pace attack. And then with
• 32:50
Speaker 3: the bat you've seen the bas ball stuff that, you know,
• 32:53
Speaker 3: being aggressive and I think they've learned to play bassball better.
• 32:57
Speaker 3: So with Australia, I think Australia's I'm sure Minus getting
• 33:01
Speaker 3: his three hundreds recently is obviously put him in the frame,
• 33:03
Speaker 3: but then you've lost your skipper for that first test.
• 33:06
Speaker 3: So I'm going to nudget towards England and I think
• 33:10
Speaker 3: it could be an epic series.
