- 0:55to have a couple quick notes. First of all, some listeners have been
- 1:00telling me that they aren't clear on how to subscribe to the War Old Time
- 1:07Radio podcast. It is available in the iTunes store. There may be keywords
- 1:12issues or things like that with finding it, but you can always go to
- 1:19the website, which is the War dot Great Detectives dot net, and there
- 1:25are text links on each post to add the program to your iTunes. In
- 1:30addition to that, there is a button in the sidebar where you can subscribe
- 1:34to it. You just click that out and it will subscribe you. So
- 1:38just remember the War single word dot Great Detectives dot net. Well, we're
- 1:47going to this week honor the Light Shirley Mitchell. At this point in old
- 1:53time radio history, the vast majority of people who made radio so good,
- 2:00so entertaining have passed away, and there are very few who remain with us.
- 2:09One of those was Shirley Mitchell, who died this past week from when
- 2:17I'm recording it, about a couple of weeks ago, if you're listening to
- 2:20it now, at the age of ninety four. And she was actually the
- 2:23only living member of my list of Radio's most Essential people. And she was
- 2:30a great character actress. Everything I've heard her in has been a supporting a
- 2:38character role, and she was probably most famous for her appearances on the program
- 2:43The Great Guilder Sleeve. But as her career continued in radio declined, she
- 2:47worked a lot on television, and in most of the obituaries mentioned her appearances
- 2:53on I Love Lucy. But she continue to act on radio, doing a
- 3:01lot of a lot of programs that wouldn't have normally been her forte including westerns
- 3:08like Fort Laramie. And she did several episodes of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar.
- 3:14In fact, we've heard her a few times in this run. So
- 3:16what I decided to do in honor of Shirley Mitchell, We're going to skip
- 3:21ahead a few weeks to play the next serial in which she appears. As
- 3:28I said, she mostly did that character role. So this isn't going to
- 3:30be a starring appearance for Shirley Mitchell. But let's go ahead and take a
- 3:36listen to today's episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar, dedicated to the memory of
- 3:40the Great Shirley Mitchell, from July ninth and July tenth of nineteen fifty six
- 3:46from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Dollar, Pete Carlson, Johnny Starr
- 3:54Mute, Oh hi have Pete. How's the family great? The lucky dogs
- 3:59are Cape Cotton summer while I toil and Fred? What's fretting you at the
- 4:01moment, Lenn, Johnny, listen, if you're wanting to know who murdered
- 4:06Allen Bate, you pay no mind to that person or person's unknown. You
- 4:12just look real close to home, look real close to home postmark Shady Lane,
- 4:16Vermont. And the signature, I suppose is that famous old name.
- 4:20That's right, anonymous. Ellen Bate was killed there a month ago. We
- 4:24shot to death. We carried a ten thousand dollars policy owner and the beneficiary
- 4:28Ben Bate, her husband. He's got a farm about four miles out of
- 4:30Shady Lane. What's the status of the investigation. Stay on, mate,
- 4:33Johnny. The coroner's jury brought in an open verdict and there's been nothing turned
- 4:38up since we were just on the point of paying off the policy. Now,
- 4:42well, all right, Pete, I'll fret for you if I can
- 4:45find Shady Lane on the map tonight and every weekday Night. Bob Bailey and
- 4:56the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed Expense ACUT America Fabulous Freelance
- 5:00Insurance Investigator Es Truley Johnny Dollar from Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to the home office
- 5:18st Our Mutual Insurance Company, Hartford, Connecticut. The following is an accounting
- 5:23of expenditures during my investigation of the Shady Lane matter. Item one thirty six
- 5:30dollars and seventy cents Transportation and incidentals Hartford to Shady Lane. A quiet little
- 5:35town of around one thousand population, drowsy streets lined with white frame homes,
- 5:41picket fences, and flower bedded yards. A town with a well chosen name,
- 5:46built under the protecting shade of venerable elms and spreading maples. A country
- 5:50crossroads town with one of everything one in one restaurant, one garage, one
- 5:55general store, one barber shop, and one constable, a gaunt and a
- 5:59lantern, George leather faced man of middle age named Jeded Bramler. Yeah,
- 6:02it's a fact, mister Dollar, lived here all my life. First time
- 6:06I've ever seen it. This heart, Yeah, that's for more right,
- 6:10for this time of year. At least. Weather's changing. World too,
- 6:14everything's changing except human nature that too. Maybe take this killing. Don't rightly
- 6:19know how to go about dealing with it? Well, maybe we can figure
- 6:23out something between us. That's the bullet that killed him. Yeah, that's
- 6:27the one. It's an odd science and shape, hand poured. Say it's
- 6:30hand poured. It's for an old fashioned squirrel rifle, smooth bore, single
- 6:34shot. I see, and I reckon. That's about all I can give
- 6:38you in the way of facts or clues. I guess you call them.
- 6:41Oh, facts will do all right. Ellen Bates was a fine woman,
- 6:45had a hard life. She was married, no children, she was alive.
- 6:48Now she's dead because of death. A bullet and the heart. There's
- 6:53all facts, mister Dollar. How did it happen? Don't rightly know?
- 6:57Want no witnesses? Could have been an accident, even what do you mean
- 7:00in accidents? We're one of them. Hunters from the city them through here,
- 7:03regular confounded idiots shoot at anything that moves. Well, surely not a
- 7:09human being sitting in her own living room. They might have never can tell
- 7:13crazy as they are. Shot a gold belonged to Het Wilmer last fall,
- 7:16caught him with it tied on their bumper. Said it was a mountain sheet.
- 7:20Yes, yes, might have done it unintentional, then got scared and
- 7:24run out. Yes, possibly, except for one of those facts, which
- 7:28fact this's bullet. Hunters from the city don't use old fashioned squirrel rifles.
- 7:33Mister Bramler, Well, I said it could have been an accident. Didn't
- 7:38say it, tazoo, I reckon somebody meant to kill her? Oh,
- 7:42I don't think there's much doubt of that. There ain't which was might not
- 7:46feel so dang worthless? Then what do you mean Ellen Bates was a fine
- 7:50woman. Hate to think of somebody killing her and getting clean away with it.
- 7:54Then let's make sure they don't get away with it. Got nothing to
- 7:57go on, mister Dollar, not one lonesome thing. What about a possible
- 8:01motive? Haven't turned up a single one? Did she have any enemies?
- 8:05Everybody that knew her, loved her. What about this bullet? Did you
- 8:11have a ballistics check maiden, Yeah, send it clear to New York they
- 8:15come up with anything. Six page report. Yeah, it's got it here
- 8:18somewhere. You can look at it if you want to know. On need
- 8:20too. What was their conclusion? Same as mine? Fired from an old
- 8:24fashioned squirrel rifle. Now anybody around here might own a gun like that.
- 8:30Yeah, but now anybody in the township must be three four hundred of them
- 8:33rifles around keepsakes handed down family souvenirs, and that's one that end couldn't be
- 8:41much deader. It's like I told you, ain't no clues at all,
- 8:46at least none to speak of. Woman without an enemy in the world,
- 8:48sitting in front of her window, shot fired from outside the house. Woman's
- 8:52dead them the facts and all the facts, No, not quite all,
- 9:00Eh, what do you mean? People? Persons are factional and their relations
- 9:05with other persons are facts, facts that we can check on. Already told
- 9:09you, mister Dalla ellen Bate didn't have no enemies. The person who killed
- 9:13her wasn't exactly a friend known enemies, I mean, but she had contacts
- 9:18and relations with other persons, and one of them, known or unknown,
- 9:22was her enemy, maybe an accidental enemy with a motive in the capacity for
- 9:26murder. What you mean by accidental? Maybe missus Bates saw something from that
- 9:31window of hers something that made her dangerous to someone else. Maybe she didn't
- 9:35even know she'd made an enemy. Yeah, that might be. Or maybe
- 9:39it's just a matter of her death benefiting somebody, somebody who otherwise wouldn't be
- 9:43her enemy. Mm hmm, the thought of that course, But it don't
- 9:46lead nowhere. It might. I've got a letter here, mister Bramler,
- 9:50I wish you'd take a look at it, all right. It arrived yesterday
- 9:54at the home office of my client in Hartford. It was mail here in
- 9:56shady Lane, cool, close to whom looked real close to whom not signed,
- 10:05eh No, not signed. Any idea who might have sent it?
- 10:09Yeah, somebody with a lot of vinegar in their blood, don't know.
- 10:13It's a fact, wouldn't count too much on it. I five, was
- 10:16you What do you mean? Like you just said, a matter of her
- 10:20death benefiting somebody, So with that insurance policy, like here is the person
- 10:24that had benefited most would be her husband, Ben Bates forget him? Why,
- 10:30Like you said, motive and capacity. Even if money was motive enough
- 10:33for Ben, he just hadn't got the capacity for murder. Forget him.
- 10:39Is Ben Bates a good friend of yours, mister Bramler, since we were
- 10:43boys together? I see? Maybe you only think you see, I ain't
- 10:48making allowances for him. Just know him, that's all. Maybe i'd better
- 10:52meet him, all right, farms just out of town ways. I'll drive
- 10:56you out there if you want. Oh, i'd appreciate that. Only thing
- 11:01you've got an expense count of some kind, isn't you sure that's right?
- 11:05Why? Well, we're not exactly a poor folk up here, but we
- 11:07ain't rich neither, and the township is kind of progal with their money.
- 11:11I see going to have to charge you for the car expense, if it's
- 11:15alright with you? Oh? Sure that sounds fine? Yeah, well,
- 11:18then maybe we could make a couple of other calls on the way. Who
- 11:22do you want to see? Well? Mostly I like to talk to the
- 11:24coroner here, and you already have huh yeah, I'm the coroner, mister
- 11:30dollar. Well are we ready? Expense account item too? Three dollars?
- 11:35Even transportation at constable jet Bramler's car from Shady Lane to the ven Bates farm.
- 11:41It was a pleasant trip summertime on a country road, winding among the
- 11:45farms, climbing lazily over the ridges, the heavy pungent scent of flex and
- 11:50clover, the hum of bees. But I couldn't completely enjoy it. I
- 11:54kept wondering how much real help I could expect from a constable who'd already made
- 11:58up his mind at the suspect wasn't capable of murderer. A constable who was
- 12:03also coroner and for all I know county attorney and district judge, a constable
- 12:09who might even be just natal thoughts, might even be a murderer. Now
- 12:15this is a Preney farm. Ben Bates's place is the next run about a
- 12:18quarter mile. I see that's Martin Preny there outside of the road, working
- 12:22on that fence, much well past the time of day. With him,
- 12:26I reckon where the Prene's and the Bates good friends. Yeah, real close
- 12:31afternoon, Jed Martin Township must be getting lex Ugo gallivant and around on pleasure
- 12:37trips being paid for Martin facial business. This hears a mister Darney dollar from
- 12:43down round Hartford, Martin Preni, mister Dollar, that's quite a job you're
- 12:48doing that, mister Preeney. Well, rock world of just fine if you
- 12:52stack them real careful so they locked together. Looks pretty difficult. It takes
- 12:56a nack moved about that and work. But if it's dug in below the
- 13:01frost line, rock wall will last a lifetime. And that's what I believe
- 13:05in, mister Dollar, planning ahead and building right, that's a good philosophy.
- 13:11And then too, the rock Wall a site cheaper that Benson, and
- 13:15right there is his real reason, mister Dollar. A man that wastes a
- 13:18substance, the fool and a sinner. I believe in prudence. You're only
- 13:22virtue, Martin Fiddlesticks. We got callers, Sarah, come on out here.
- 13:28Ain't staying Martin. Just passing just a minute, Martin, just what's
- 13:31so called official business? You owned? Jet murder of Hellen Bates. Mister
- 13:35Dollar here is an insurance investigator. He's come to look into it. I
- 13:39see. Well, it's a terrible tragedy, mister Dollar. Sad thing for
- 13:43the whole township, especially for Sarah and me. Yes, I imagine,
- 13:48so they've been good neighbors, fine people, folks about it, be proud
- 13:52to know so, I understand, couldn't help feeling sorry for him. Just
- 13:56didn't seem to get ahead in spite of Ben being a good hub and then
- 14:01this on top of all the other Troublely there, what do you mean by
- 14:03trouble? Afternoon, gentlemen, Come here, Sarah, you meet a friend
- 14:07of Jed's, mister Johnny Dallah, my wife, Sarah. Mister Dolla comes
- 14:11from Harf then he's here for he works for an insurance company. He's given
- 14:18Jed the handle. This Ellen Bates thing. Oh, yes, I see,
- 14:20Well, don't let me interrupt he I'm just tell him, mister Dolla,
- 14:24what good neighbors the Baits should always been. A body couldn't ask for
- 14:28a better friend than Ellen Bates. Mister Preeney, you said something about all
- 14:31the other trouble later, I was referring to Ellen's illness after that operation last
- 14:37year. She was pertinently an in. You might say. Ben had to
- 14:41wait on a hand and foot longly, doing for the house and running the
- 14:45fire. A lot of time you spent taking care of her, now,
- 14:48Sarah, not half as much time as he spent hanging around that girl.
- 14:50What girl is that? Why that little flippery gybit that works up? I'm
- 14:56sorry, Martin, but it's true, and you know it, mister Dolla.
- 15:00I'm afraid my wife had just repeating gossip she heard. And Bait's a
- 15:03fine young man in his story to the contrary, I had the rumors nothing
- 15:07more. Well, sometimes the best way to stop an idle rumor is to
- 15:11check into it. If you'd care to tell me who I knew the girl,
- 15:13mister Dollar, her name is Milli Wales. He's a waitress at the
- 15:16Shady Lane Cafe. I'd like to talk to her. You can when we
- 15:18get back to town where folks reckon. We'd better be getting on, mister
- 15:22Dolla, Ellen Bates was a fine woman. Whoever it was killed he I
- 15:28hope you get him. I believe we will. Oh. And by the
- 15:33way, missus Freney, the company was very grateful for your letter. My
- 15:37letter, I mean, how did you know it? I didn't know.
- 15:41I was just guessing. Nice to have met both of you. See you
- 15:46again, Johnny Dellar. Ready would you call the Hartford mister dollars? Thanks
- 16:07operator, go ahead, Hartford. Hello, giant, Yeah, Pete a
- 16:11big fat expense account, and you still reverse the call I had to.
- 16:14I'm phoning from a crossroad store. Look, I need a quick factor too.
- 16:17In connection with the Ellen Bates murder. That ten thousand dollars policy on
- 16:21Ellen's life? When was it written? Pete? Around four years ago?
- 16:23I'll get the exact date if you want to hang on. No, No,
- 16:26that's close enough. I was hoping it was only a year or two.
- 16:29Back knocks a pet theory in the head. No, but it doesn't
- 16:33help it any He is there also a policy on the life of Ben Bates?
- 16:37Yeah, same amount, taking out the same time, right after they
- 16:40were married. A nice round zero. What do the local authorities think?
- 16:45The only local authority in Shady Lane is sitting outside in the car right now,
- 16:48and he thinks the same as I do, which is what we're both
- 16:52stumped. I'll be talking to you from Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, location,
- 17:06Shady Lane, Vermont to the home office Star Mutual Insurance Company, Hartford,
- 17:10Connecticut, assignment the Shady Lane matter expense account continued, Item four to seven
- 17:19cents. The copy of the Shady Lane Weekly Crier, the paper that prints
- 17:23the folksy news. According to the mast head. Maybe it would help,
- 17:29because the whole case seemed to have a folksy flavor. A young farm wife
- 17:33named Ellen Bates, a semi invalid without a known enemy in the township,
- 17:37had been shot to death a month before. The killer. Unidentified motive,
- 17:41unknown physical evidence, non existent, leads none. I rejoined Constable Jed Bramler
- 17:47in the car and glanced over the paper as we drove on to the base
- 17:49farm. I began to realize that folksy, and that the Bates case was
- 17:53probably going to be tougher than an old boot. We leave the car here
- 18:00at the road and walk up through the draw. I'll show you how it
- 18:03happened. All right, good, the shirt doesn't look like very good farm
- 18:08land, tain't. Ben's got a few good acres north of the house,
- 18:14but most of it's like this. Won't grow much of anything, scept in
- 18:17rocks. Takes a lot of scratch in to make a go of a place
- 18:19like this. Yeah, yeah, I mentioned, And it would be even
- 18:22tougher if you had to take care of an invalid wife at the same time.
- 18:26I reckon could watch yourself on that barb wire. Mister Dollar, All
- 18:30right, there's easier ways to get into the house. But I figured you'd
- 18:34like to see how the killer got away. And this is it, you
- 18:37think? Uh, he fired the shot from cover and then oh she did
- 18:41all right, whichever and then he or she ran back down this draw here
- 18:45and got away. Yeah, must have been seen otherwise. But here in
- 18:48the draw a person would be out of sight from both houses, either the
- 18:52Baits place or the preenies over on the other side. I don't buy that
- 18:56one, all right. This brush is thick enough to hide a herd of
- 18:59channel. Yeah. Once the killer got to the road back where we left,
- 19:03the car might have gone anyplace. That's the trouble. That's the place
- 19:07is too full of mites. Tried to pick up a trail in here,
- 19:11even brought in dogs, but they didn't turn up nothing. Dogs is mostly
- 19:15overrated anyhow, so I've heard. Yeah, let's see now, I want
- 19:18to be right about here some ah ah, yes, there we are over
- 19:23that way. Uh huh, yeah, yeah, I see the stake you
- 19:26put up the marketplace. Nope, because need to put it up. It's
- 19:30a survey markert. But it's just about where I calculate shot was fired.
- 19:33Drum right about here? What was the survey for mister Bromler Highway Department.
- 19:40They was figuring to build a new turnpike through here last year fell through.
- 19:44Though how come the whys of a public bureau ain't for mere man to know,
- 19:48mister Dollar, They finally picked someplace else a few months ago came too,
- 19:52might have made this land worth something to be in another one of those
- 19:56mites. Huh. Now, look through the bushes just to the left of
- 20:00that big maple. That's the corner, the parlor corner of the Bate's house.
- 20:06And Ellen was sitting right there in that big front window when it happened.
- 20:11Then has put the glass back in, since well, it wouldn't have
- 20:15been too difficult. A shot from here in old fashioned squirrel rifles is mighty
- 20:18accurate, and nearly everybody in the township has one. That's about it.
- 20:23That's not a matter of finding a needle in a straw stack. It's finding
- 20:26one special straw in a straw stack. Mighty hard chore, I'd say,
- 20:32so would I. So there she sat an easy target, alone at her
- 20:37own front window. Well, not exactly alone, mister Dolla. Alone at
- 20:44the window, yes, but missus Preeney was in the room with her at
- 20:47the time. The woman who wrote the anonymous letter accusing ben Bates, I
- 20:51didn't know that didn't seem to have no bearing. She just happened to be
- 20:55there, brought over a cake or something from next door. She was always
- 20:57doing things like that for Ellen. Uh huh that Missus Peeney didn't see who
- 21:03fired the shot. She just heard the window glass crash and saw Ellen come
- 21:07half out of her chair and then fall on the floor. An invalid,
- 21:10helpless sitting there at a window. And what the devil could a woman like
- 21:15that do to make somebody hate her enough to kill her? Dolla? If
- 21:18I could answer that, I would have somebody locked up by now, if
- 21:22anybody did hate her, of course, meaning maybe hate wasn't the reason.
- 21:29Got a better one. Oh, I'm just supposing. Eh, then quite
- 21:33a bit of that. Hey tell me something, mister Bramler. This waitress
- 21:37at the Shady Lane Cafe, the one Missus Preeney made the insinuations about it.
- 21:41Milly Wells, Yeah, Millie Wells, is she pretty rare? Ho'd
- 21:45say? Tastes differ, I reckon though most anybody'd call her pretty though?
- 21:49Well, what about that gossip? Missus Preeney was spouting. Is it just
- 21:52a rumor? I was ben seeing Millie before his wife was murdered? Hard
- 21:57not to see her? Ain't a very big town, you know what I
- 22:00mean? Did he go out of his way to see her? Stopped in
- 22:03the cafe there once in a while, a cup of coffee, piece of
- 22:06pie, doing all the cooking at home like he was? He got a
- 22:10mite tired of it? I reckon? What about now? Is he still
- 22:12singer each most of his evening meal? Is there? Is that? All
- 22:17other mounts to well? Folks generally agree that there's some interest building up since
- 22:22his wife's death. What about his wife? Did she have any chance at
- 22:26all of getting well? Nope, not according to the doctors. I'd see,
- 22:32mister Dollar, you are bocking up that same wrong tree again. It
- 22:37kind of adds up figures. Lie sometimes pretty girl, young and a live
- 22:41interested maybe an invalid wife, run down farm, a ten thousand dollars insurance
- 22:45policy, all tags true enough. He wouldn't be the first man I went
- 22:48wrong with a setup like that. Ah not. Then, I told you
- 22:52before, murder just ain't in his nature. Come on, let's walk on
- 22:57up to the house and talk to him and one of the thing that anonymous
- 23:00letter, Missus Preeney sent us. And why would she go out of a
- 23:03way to get Ben Bates in trouble? I'd say I thought she was a
- 23:07friend of the Bates, of Missus Bates, Yes, Ellen, But for
- 23:11some reason she never has seemed to like Ben very much. I don't know
- 23:15why she's done it, mister Dollar, but I sure wouldn't put no stock
- 23:18in what she said. It's just her nature, that's all it is.
- 23:26It was late afternoon, long shadows were beginning to stretch out over the funny
- 23:30ground, almost the same time of day that Ellen Bates was killed, killed
- 23:36by her husband. I was beginning to believe, and yet Constable Jed Bramler
- 23:40swore by Ben, his longtime friend, human ties, human emotions, just
- 23:45plain folks, and a case that was growing messier and more vague by the
- 23:49hour. How much sign of life in and out? You never know.
- 24:03Sounds like somebody coming around the house. Must have been working out in the
- 24:07barn. Always plenty to do on a flint rock farm. You've come looking
- 24:11from it, Constable, how are you, Grodade, he said, how
- 24:17are you? I'm fine, I'm just fine. Ben around. I've been
- 24:23working our back fixed and spread it. Yeah, let's fine, Grode.
- 24:29He's Ben here Ben? No, No, Miss Ben's not here, No
- 24:33where he is. No, he's not here. Any idea when he'll be
- 24:37back? No, no, he didn't say. You can go in and
- 24:42set though. If you want constable, maybe we will. Grode. This
- 24:48is mister Dollar, Brody Huckins. How are you, Grody. I'm fine.
- 24:52I'm just fine. Grody does our jobs for Ben. Some of the
- 24:56other farmers too. Oh, I see, were you working here the day
- 25:00missus Bates was killed. Well, that's a liar. I won't even near
- 25:02you that day, And anybody that says I was a liar, I was
- 25:04crow over on the other side of town. We'll go inside and wait.
- 25:08Mister Dollar, all right, see you. Grody kind of gets excited when
- 25:18he figures he's being cue something. Yeah, he seems scared of you.
- 25:23Has he been in trouble before? Petty stuff like shooting game out of season?
- 25:29Is he a good shot? Dead shot? Never miss his In fact,
- 25:37we waited in the parlor for a while the romware Ellen Bates had died.
- 25:41Her picture was still over the mantelin. A clear eyed sober woman,
- 25:45much younger than i'd have matching. The sun gradually set and the light on
- 25:49the picture grew dim, but Ben didn't come back. We gave up finally
- 25:53and drove back to town. I left Bramler at his office and walked down
- 25:56the street to the Shady Lane Cafe to week dinner. I'll be right window,
- 26:03sir, No hurry, you'll be cooler if you sit there by the
- 26:07window. Oh all fine, ks. There were half a dozen tables in
- 26:11the place, all empty. I was the only customer. The girl was
- 26:15pretty and friendly and fitted the description of Milly Wells. The pot roast is
- 26:19awfully good this evening. I think you'll like it all right, you've made
- 26:22a sale. You're a stranger in town, aren't you. Yeah. Yeah,
- 26:26I'm investigating the murder of Ellen Bates. I see, are you,
- 26:32by any chance, Milly Wells? Yes? Then I guess you're the person
- 26:37I'm looking for. You worked very fast. I thought it would take longer.
- 26:44Hm hmmm. Oh. I knew you'd find out, of course,
- 26:45sooner or later. But I was hoping Ben and I would have a little
- 26:49time together first. I see we were fools to expect it, though,
- 26:55once you've been tagged. You don't have a chance. Did Ellen Bates have
- 26:57a chance. I didn't give her the slightest cause to worry. I didn't
- 27:02let Ben know once, how I felt, not until after she'd been killed.
- 27:06That was very considerate of you. And I know he didn't give me
- 27:07one thought as long as she was alive. It's not in his nature,
- 27:11so I've heard it. Doesn't it mean anything at all when a person has
- 27:15been acquitted, acquitted of what of murder? What else? Isn't that what?
- 27:22Oh? I thought you knew. I thought that's what you. I
- 27:32guess maybe you'd better tell me about it, Millie. Now here's our star
- 27:51to tell you about tomorrow's intriguing episode of this week's story. Tomorrow, A
- 27:55sudden twist and a cool threat, a strange revelation, and the lie has
- 28:00come thick and fast. Join us, won't you? Yours Truly? Johnny
- 28:04Dollar? Yours Truly Johnny Dollar is starring Bob Bailey is transcribed in Hollywood,
- 28:21written by Less Crutchfield. It is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone. Be
- 28:26sure to join us tomorrow night at same time in station for the next exciting
- 28:30episode of Yours Truly. Johnny Dollar Roy Rowan speaking when I when welcome back,
- 30:11I believe we heard Shirley Mitchell as the woman who sent the letter that
- 30:15has Johnny on this investigation, and this one I think is just very interesting
- 30:21from a psychological standpoint and a lot of questions based on Johnny's experience. It's
- 30:27probably worth noting because we've had this question in recent weeks about a change of
- 30:33attitude to Johnny. Really suspicious, but not in any way arrogant or sent
- 30:41in any particular direction. We can see that from the way that the show
- 30:45is playing out at this point. But that will actually do it for today.
- 30:52We'll be back on Wednesday with parts three and four of the Shady Lane
- 30:57Matter. Send your comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectors dot net and follow
- 31:04us on Twitter at Radio Detectors from Boise, Idaho. This is your host,
