- 0:10Speaker 1: Hi once again.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Everybody, Welcome to this freshest edition of Birds Weekly, presented
- 0:14Speaker 2: by the Inside the Birds and Network.
- 0:16Speaker 1: From a man, Ray didn't drum, Derek Gunn and Ray.
- 0:19Speaker 1: It was like the varsity playing the JV.
- 0:23Speaker 2: And when you think about it, the Eagles really needed
- 0:28Speaker 2: a game of this ease when you consider every game
- 0:32Speaker 2: except the second Giants game has been a nail bier,
- 0:37Speaker 2: nip and tuck. They have been. They have gone to
- 0:40Speaker 2: the limits in every game but one. It was nice
- 0:46Speaker 2: to see them come out from the very first drive
- 0:52Speaker 2: thirteen plays, sixty seven yards, touchdown, and from there it
- 0:57Speaker 2: was all academic.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Yep, that was That's exactly right.
- 1:02Speaker 4: That was what my thinking was with this game was
- 1:08Speaker 4: there's no question the Eagles are a better team.
- 1:11Speaker 3: And I mean if the Raiders, I said to you
- 1:13Speaker 3: a moment ago.
- 1:14Speaker 4: I haven't seen the Tennessee Titans this year, so it's
- 1:17Speaker 4: hard for me to say, but I can't imagine they're
- 1:19Speaker 4: worse than the Raiders. I mean, the Raiders are the
- 1:22Speaker 4: worst team I've seen this year by far. So the
- 1:25Speaker 4: Eagles were clearly the better team. You know, but how
- 1:28Speaker 4: often do we see Eagles team sometimes play down to
- 1:30Speaker 4: the level of the team they're playing. And my thought
- 1:33Speaker 4: in this game was, look, just come out and just
- 1:36Speaker 4: take control of this game right away. You know, not
- 1:40Speaker 4: start three and out, three and out and you wind
- 1:43Speaker 4: up with a game that's ten to six in the
- 1:45Speaker 4: third quarter and you keep a bad team in the game.
- 1:49Speaker 4: Just come out, grab it by the throat in the
- 1:51Speaker 4: first series, and just stay on top of them the
- 1:53Speaker 4: whole game. And that's what the Eagles did. As you said,
- 1:57Speaker 4: they came out thirteen play, drive right down the field, scored,
- 2:00Speaker 4: they get the ball back, they take it down the field,
- 2:02Speaker 4: kick field goal, and the game's over in effect, I
- 2:06Speaker 4: mean at that point. But I mean we've often seen
- 2:09Speaker 4: the Eagles struggle and sputter and fool around with bad
- 2:12Speaker 4: teams and get.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Themselves in trouble sometimes.
- 2:15Speaker 4: Uh. And that was my one concern about this game
- 2:17Speaker 4: was is it going to be one of those kind
- 2:19Speaker 4: of games?
- 2:20Speaker 3: But it wasn't.
- 2:21Speaker 4: I mean, right from right from the very first series,
- 2:23Speaker 4: the Eagles were right on top of them, and you know,
- 2:26Speaker 4: the Raiders, once the Eagles got up, the Raiders never
- 2:28Speaker 4: had a chance.
- 2:31Speaker 2: This Raiders organization was once a very proud organization from
- 2:35Speaker 2: Los Angelem, from Oakland to Los Angeles and back to Oakland.
- 2:41Speaker 2: I never thought I would see a Raiders team that
- 2:44Speaker 2: was this putrid. I don't know why Pete Carroll took
- 2:48Speaker 2: this job after all the success he had in Seattle,
- 2:51Speaker 2: but this Raiders squad is like nothing I've ever seen before.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Basically any history of the of the Oakland Slash La
- 2:58Speaker 2: Slash Las Vegas Raiders.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean you would probably have to go back
- 3:04Speaker 4: to the very beginning. I mean, and when they first
- 3:07Speaker 4: started the AFL, the Oakland Raiders were one of were
- 3:11Speaker 4: probably the worst team when when it all started. And
- 3:16Speaker 4: but when Al Davis came in, like in year three
- 3:19Speaker 4: or four, Uh, he changed that and they became a power.
- 3:24Speaker 4: I mean, they became a great team. And like I
- 3:27Speaker 4: was saying to you, I mean it's you look at
- 3:28Speaker 4: the Raiders of the seventies and the eighties. I mean
- 3:31Speaker 4: that one time they had an offensive line that had
- 3:34Speaker 4: four Hall of Famers on it, Jim Otto, Gene Upshaw, Artshell,
- 3:37Speaker 4: and Bob Brown.
- 3:38Speaker 3: The offensive line.
- 3:40Speaker 4: Uh, you know, they had three Hall of Fame receivers.
- 3:42Speaker 4: They had bullet In the cough Branch and Dave Casper
- 3:46Speaker 4: Hall of Fame quarterbacks. Stable and blanda. I mean that's
- 3:50Speaker 4: how dominant they were. And they had a personality and
- 3:54Speaker 4: they had and they were nasty, and they were intimidating
- 3:58Speaker 4: and they were proud of it. And now, I mean,
- 4:01Speaker 4: you have a team that's just in ruins, and I
- 4:05Speaker 4: don't know how you felt, but when I was watching.
- 4:07Speaker 3: The game, it was a funny feeling to have.
- 4:10Speaker 4: When I'm looking at the shots of Pete Carroll in
- 4:12Speaker 4: the sidelines, you know, I actually felt sorry for the guy.
- 4:15Speaker 4: I really did, because I got to know Pete Carroll
- 4:19Speaker 4: a little bit when I was at NFL Films because
- 4:21Speaker 4: I worked on a couple of projects that involved his team,
- 4:23Speaker 4: and I found him to be just a very nice guy.
- 4:28Speaker 4: And when he stepped down as the coach in Seattle,
- 4:32Speaker 4: I mean, he had a record that absolutely is Hall
- 4:35Speaker 4: of Fame worthy.
- 4:36Speaker 3: What do you think about it?
- 4:37Speaker 4: I mean, fourteen years, ten playoff appearances, six division titles,
- 4:42Speaker 4: a six zero six winning percentage. I mean he would
- 4:45Speaker 4: have been in the discussion for Hall of Fame. But
- 4:49Speaker 4: now he comes back and he coaches this team and
- 4:52Speaker 4: it's probably going to kill him, you know. I Mean
- 4:54Speaker 4: it's the comparison I would make is George Seaffert. Remember
- 4:57Speaker 4: George Seffert succeeded Bill, and he had tremendous success. I mean,
- 5:03Speaker 4: when he stepped down as coach of the forty nine ers,
- 5:06Speaker 4: he had the highest winning percentage of any NFL coach ever.
- 5:10Speaker 4: I mean, higher than Lombardi, higher than Madden, higher than
- 5:14Speaker 4: Hallis Shula, all of them. He had the highest winning
- 5:17Speaker 4: percentage of anybody. And if he had just stayed out,
- 5:20Speaker 4: he would be in Canton today. But a couple of
- 5:23Speaker 4: years later he kind of got the itch and he
- 5:26Speaker 4: took Carolina called him, and he went down there and
- 5:28Speaker 4: coached and was terrible. I mean, he had a season
- 5:32Speaker 4: like Pete Carroll's having right now with the Panthers, got fired,
- 5:36Speaker 4: and you never hear him talked about as a Hall
- 5:38Speaker 4: of Fame candidate. People talk about Holmgren, talking about Coughlin,
- 5:43Speaker 4: Mike Shanahan. You'd never hear Seaffert. But if he had
- 5:47Speaker 4: stayed retired, he'd probably be in the Hall of Fame.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Now had finished his chances. And I have a feeling
- 5:53Speaker 4: that this awful year with this awful team is liable
- 5:56Speaker 4: to do the same thing to Pete Carroll.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Ooh you know what, maybe aby Ray.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Sometimes the competitive juices supersede conventional wisdom. It couldn't have
- 6:07Speaker 2: been about the money for him, He's got money. Couldn't
- 6:10Speaker 2: have been about the fame, as you just alluded to.
- 6:12Speaker 2: His record with Seattle is inbeccable plus a Super Bowl championship,
- 6:16Speaker 2: and the man's in his seventies. I mean he should
- 6:18Speaker 2: be riding off into the sunset and basically enjoying life.
- 6:22Speaker 2: But obviously something lure him back to where maybe he
- 6:25Speaker 2: thought he could do it again with another franchise, and
- 6:30Speaker 2: compared to what he took over in Seattle, he's got
- 6:32Speaker 2: to rebuild. I mean, they've got a few pieces, you know,
- 6:35Speaker 2: Aston Genty, Max Crosby, they have a few pieces, But
- 6:38Speaker 2: you've got to rebuild that thing from the bottom up.
- 6:40Speaker 2: And it's gonna take a couple of years. If he
- 6:42Speaker 2: sticks around, it'll take a couple of years for him
- 6:45Speaker 2: to build this thing back to respectability.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Yeah, and you're probably not gonna do that with a
- 6:50Speaker 4: seventy four year old coach. You know, this is a
- 6:54Speaker 4: complete tear down the third facing, and they're not going
- 6:58Speaker 4: to do that with a guy who's in his seventh
- 7:00Speaker 4: They're going to go get a younger coach and start
- 7:01Speaker 4: building with him. So I think Pete's going to be
- 7:04Speaker 4: one and done there. But you know, you're talking about
- 7:07Speaker 4: that urge, the competitive juices that bring guys back. You know,
- 7:11Speaker 4: these coaches, they're a special breed boy, you know, and
- 7:15Speaker 4: that's what they are. And look at Dick for Meal.
- 7:17Speaker 4: I mean, Dick for Meal was out for fourteen years,
- 7:20Speaker 4: but he never got it out of his system, you know.
- 7:22Speaker 3: And then you know, good for him.
- 7:24Speaker 4: I mean he came back, took over a terrible team
- 7:26Speaker 4: with the Saint Louis Rams, and in three years he
- 7:28Speaker 4: won a Super Bowl.
- 7:29Speaker 3: And now he's in the Hall of Fame.
- 7:31Speaker 4: But everybody nobody thought, you know, most people said, oh,
- 7:35Speaker 4: he's been out too Long's he's doing TV, he's doing fine,
- 7:39Speaker 4: motivational speaking, he doesn't need it.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Oh yeah, he needs it. And he came back and
- 7:43Speaker 3: he won a Super Bowl.
- 7:45Speaker 4: So I mean that's you know, these guys are cut
- 7:48Speaker 4: from a different cloth, they really are, and Pete Carroll
- 7:51Speaker 4: is one of them. You know, he's for whatever else happens.
- 7:55Speaker 4: I mean, he is one of very select group of
- 7:57Speaker 4: guys that won both a national champion in college, had
- 8:01Speaker 4: a Super Bowl only three guys have done that, and
- 8:04Speaker 4: that's Jimmy Johnson, Barry Switzer, god knows how that happened,
- 8:09Speaker 4: and Pete Carroll.
- 8:11Speaker 3: That's it.
- 8:11Speaker 4: I mean that they're the only ones that won the
- 8:14Speaker 4: Ultimate Prize on both college and the NFL. So that's
- 8:18Speaker 4: quite a distinction. But this team he's coaching now, I mean,
- 8:21Speaker 4: that's just about hopeless.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Well, well, luckily we don't have to worry about covering
- 8:25Speaker 2: a team like that. We cover a team that makes
- 8:29Speaker 2: us scratch our heads in wonderment for a different reason.
- 8:32Speaker 2: And you know, ever since it was announced prior to
- 8:35Speaker 2: the Chargers game that Nick Sirianni was going to be
- 8:38Speaker 2: more involved in the offensive structure, we have seen, as
- 8:41Speaker 2: we talked about after that Chargers game, we have seen
- 8:45Speaker 2: a variation in this offense. Yeah, you know, we've seen
- 8:48Speaker 2: you know, the shouble passes now back in it. We've
- 8:51Speaker 2: seen seam routes crossing routes. It didn't work to perfection
- 8:56Speaker 2: the way he wanted it against the Chargers, but against
- 8:58Speaker 2: the Raiders, everything they wanted to do they basically did.
- 9:02Speaker 2: We saw all of that and then some and I
- 9:06Speaker 2: hate to say this, you know, because so many people
- 9:09Speaker 2: are saying this on the outside looking in, Well, it
- 9:12Speaker 2: was only the Raiders, you know, they rolled over the Raiders.
- 9:15Speaker 2: But the Raiders are a professional football team with highly
- 9:18Speaker 2: paid players as well, And as Seth Joyner said, it's
- 9:23Speaker 2: not about the players a lot of times, it's about
- 9:26Speaker 2: the coaching, you know, and maybe they're not being coached
- 9:29Speaker 2: up right. I mean, you look at how many coaches
- 9:31Speaker 2: the Raiders have had over the last four or five years,
- 9:34Speaker 2: you know. And but this Eagles team needed this, This
- 9:37Speaker 2: is what they needed on both sides of the football.
- 9:42Speaker 2: I have to ask you like this, do you think
- 9:45Speaker 2: this was that so called get right game or because
- 9:51Speaker 2: it was the Raiders, are you still in a wait
- 9:53Speaker 2: and see mode?
- 9:56Speaker 4: Well, I think it can be both. I think it
- 10:00Speaker 4: can be both. I think it was as you described,
- 10:03Speaker 4: it was a game they needed. Uh, it was a
- 10:06Speaker 4: game that they came out and you can say what
- 10:10Speaker 4: and we have everything we say here now has to
- 10:12Speaker 4: be put in the context of who they were playing.
- 10:15Speaker 4: And we acknowledge that the Raiders are the worst team
- 10:18Speaker 4: in the league and certainly looked like it. But you
- 10:21Speaker 4: can't take away the game plan. You can't take away
- 10:25Speaker 4: the new wrinkles to the offense, that is the new
- 10:29Speaker 4: design of the passing game, the fact that Hurts is
- 10:33Speaker 4: under center a lot more and it's clearly being effective.
- 10:37Speaker 4: The fact that the offensive line looks pretty good. Now,
- 10:40Speaker 4: I mean it's they're there. I mean, they're playing a
- 10:42Speaker 4: stretching games now where they're actually starting to look kind
- 10:44Speaker 4: of like, not quite like they were last year, but
- 10:47Speaker 4: certainly better. And you know you mentioned the Chargers game.
- 10:52Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, they lost the Chargers game, but they
- 10:54Speaker 4: only lost across the turnovers. I mean, if they don't,
- 10:57Speaker 4: if they just turn it over three times, they probably
- 10:59Speaker 4: win that game. So things are definitely clicking on the
- 11:03Speaker 4: offense now. I mean, it's not remember what it was
- 11:06Speaker 4: like in the first half of the season when we
- 11:08Speaker 4: were all saying, this offense is just stuck in the
- 11:10Speaker 4: mud and they're predictable. It's obvious defenses know exactly what
- 11:15Speaker 4: they're going to do, and the Eagles kept saying no, no, no,
- 11:19Speaker 4: but we all knew it was true. And now because
- 11:22Speaker 4: they kind of got pushed to the edge of the
- 11:24Speaker 4: cliff here, you know, Nick Sirianni absolutely got involved in
- 11:28Speaker 4: play design because the guy was an offensive coordinator, and
- 11:32Speaker 4: they brought some new elements to the offense, and it's
- 11:35Speaker 4: definitely made a difference, you know. I mean, you can
- 11:37Speaker 4: say what you want about the Raiders, but the Eagles
- 11:39Speaker 4: rolled out some pretty good stuff on that game on Sunday,
- 11:43Speaker 4: and their quarterback, who had been under fire for an
- 11:48Speaker 4: entire week with people wanting to bench the for God's sakes,
- 11:51Speaker 4: came out and played pretty close to a perfect game.
- 11:55Speaker 4: And so, yeah, is that something that you can build on,
- 11:58Speaker 4: you know, moving towards the playoff?
- 12:00Speaker 1: I think so.
- 12:02Speaker 2: You know, as bland as their offense had been much
- 12:05Speaker 2: of the season, Ray, and how shocked we were, you know,
- 12:08Speaker 2: Saquon not running the ball nearly as effectively as he
- 12:11Speaker 2: did in twenty twenty four, DeVante Smith and AJ Brown's
- 12:15Speaker 2: total numbers were way down compared to a year ago.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Here we sit with just three games left to play, Ray,
- 12:23Speaker 2: and we could potentially have three Eagles that surpassed the
- 12:27Speaker 2: one thousand yard mark in work. Saquon only needs sixty
- 12:32Speaker 2: yards now rushing to reach one thousand yards. Devonte Smith
- 12:36Speaker 2: is at eight hundred and eighty nine receiving yards. AJ
- 12:39Speaker 2: Brown is at eight hundred and forty yards. I mean,
- 12:43Speaker 2: it's been bad, but They're nine to five and their
- 12:46Speaker 2: three primary weapons are on the brink of alls are
- 12:51Speaker 2: passing a thousand yard mark. Yes, this team this season
- 12:56Speaker 2: has been the most perplexing thing that I've seen in
- 12:59Speaker 2: quite some.
- 13:01Speaker 4: That's very good word for perplexing, because we know what
- 13:05Speaker 4: these guys are capable of. We saw them win a
- 13:08Speaker 4: super Bowl with basically the same cast of characters, certainly
- 13:11Speaker 4: on the offensive side they are. But this season has
- 13:15Speaker 4: been a struggle, you know, and you know we said
- 13:18Speaker 4: this right from the beginning at the start of the
- 13:21Speaker 4: year that the year after the Super Bowl, it is
- 13:24Speaker 4: a challenge.
- 13:25Speaker 1: It just is.
- 13:26Speaker 3: I mean, you see.
- 13:28Speaker 4: Teams go through it all the time, and especially the
- 13:33Speaker 4: Eagles that the whole history of them, the year after
- 13:35Speaker 4: they've gone to a super Bowl, whether they wanted or
- 13:38Speaker 4: lost it, that next year is always a tough year.
- 13:42Speaker 3: And some of it is the expectation, Some of it
- 13:44Speaker 3: is salary driven, some of it as guys have new.
- 13:47Speaker 4: Pursuits and they aren' quite as focused a lot of
- 13:50Speaker 4: it as other teams are coming after you because you're
- 13:52Speaker 4: now the team that everybody wants to beat. I mean,
- 13:55Speaker 4: all of that stuff factors into it, and it just
- 13:58Speaker 4: makes that next year a whole different animal than the
- 14:02Speaker 4: previous year. And it's and it absolutely affected this team
- 14:07Speaker 4: this year and injuries on the offensive line. It's kind
- 14:10Speaker 4: of where it started, but then it just built from there.
- 14:14Speaker 4: And I mean, I thought that one of the things
- 14:17Speaker 4: I found interesting about the game yesterday was when Hurts
- 14:22Speaker 4: through that that deep in to AJ Brown for the touchdown.
- 14:28Speaker 4: You know, his reaction to it, you know, like shouting
- 14:32Speaker 4: and pumping his fist. Now that's not normally him. And
- 14:37Speaker 4: when he was asked about it after the game, he said, well, yeah,
- 14:39Speaker 4: I was just happy that we want No, it's more
- 14:41Speaker 4: than that. I mean, that was I'm not going to
- 14:43Speaker 4: say that was kind of a take that to the
- 14:46Speaker 4: to the media and all the noise that he had
- 14:49Speaker 4: been hearing all week, because he doesn't address what's being said,
- 14:53Speaker 4: and he would like you to think that he doesn't
- 14:54Speaker 4: even hear or penny attention all that, but of course
- 14:57Speaker 4: we're all human, and of course he did so. I mean,
- 15:00Speaker 4: he knew that during the week the people were so
- 15:02Speaker 4: that there were people out there saying he should be benched,
- 15:05Speaker 4: and so he came into this game, regardless of who
- 15:08Speaker 4: he was playing, to prove a point, and he certainly did.
- 15:13Speaker 4: I mean, he played almost a flawless game. But I
- 15:17Speaker 4: thought that his reaction to that play was sort of
- 15:22Speaker 4: a you think I can't make those throws. You can't
- 15:25Speaker 4: think I can't throw it down the seam. You think
- 15:27Speaker 4: I can't hit a guy in the middle. You think
- 15:28Speaker 4: I can't hit that particular receiver. Yeah, there it all is.
- 15:33Speaker 4: And I think that that was we talked about what
- 15:35Speaker 4: the team needed. Well, I think that was something that
- 15:37Speaker 4: he needed. And the other part of his game that
- 15:40Speaker 4: I think is worth mentioning is, you know, seven rushing
- 15:44Speaker 4: attempts and it really helps the get it Derek, It
- 15:48Speaker 4: really helps the offense when he runs. Now, the other
- 15:52Speaker 4: side of it is on the last one, it looked
- 15:54Speaker 4: like he got hurt. You know, he's sort of limped
- 15:57Speaker 4: off the field that he comes back and throws the
- 15:59Speaker 4: dutchdown pass. But that's the other side of it. If
- 16:02Speaker 4: every time he runs the ball, you're hurt, You're afraid
- 16:05Speaker 4: he's going.
- 16:05Speaker 3: To get injured.
- 16:06Speaker 4: But man, that threat of him running and it wasn't
- 16:10Speaker 4: for tremendous yard, which it was what seven rushes for
- 16:12Speaker 4: thirty nine yards?
- 16:14Speaker 3: Yep, that really a couple.
- 16:16Speaker 4: Of big plays in there, A couple of first downs,
- 16:18Speaker 4: got the offense moving and made the defense think. I
- 16:21Speaker 4: mean it were plays all of a sudden. Now they
- 16:23Speaker 4: have to play a spy on him, which takes one
- 16:26Speaker 4: other guy out of the coverage.
- 16:27Speaker 3: I mean all of that stuff.
- 16:29Speaker 4: He doesn't have to run for a lot of yards,
- 16:31Speaker 4: he doesn't have to make a ton of big plays
- 16:33Speaker 4: or even score a lot of touchdowns. But just the
- 16:35Speaker 4: threat of him running and the success that he has
- 16:38Speaker 4: and a different look that he gives this offense when
- 16:40Speaker 4: he's willing to run the ball is really I think
- 16:42Speaker 4: that's something they're going to have to keep in the
- 16:44Speaker 4: game plan for the rest of this season and certainly
- 16:47Speaker 4: if they want to win in the postseason.
- 16:49Speaker 5: Hey, I still like a good night out, but I'm
- 16:51Speaker 5: not always in the mood to drink. And that's why
- 16:54Speaker 5: I looked for a great alternative, and I found one.

- 20:31Speaker 2: You know, I think it spoke volumes what he didn't
- 20:36Speaker 2: say at the podium after the game. Mark Farsetta and
- 20:39Speaker 2: I are sitting there with Seth on our postgame show
- 20:42Speaker 2: Sunday night, and we're giggling like kids, because every answer
- 20:46Speaker 2: basically from him was like a three or four word answer,
- 20:49Speaker 2: you know. And I think it was a bleep you
- 20:52Speaker 2: moment to the media and to those who doubted him,
- 20:57Speaker 2: as you so eloquently, you know, just said a few
- 21:00Speaker 2: moments ago. The one thing I admire most about him
- 21:05Speaker 2: is if you sat across the table from him and
- 21:07Speaker 2: played poker, you wouldn't know whether he had a good
- 21:10Speaker 2: hand or a bad hand.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Because he's always stoic, you know.
- 21:13Speaker 2: His facial expressions never changed, his demeter, his voice, octave
- 21:17Speaker 2: range never changes. He's always the same. And even when
- 21:20Speaker 2: he answered the media on Sunday nights, he was very monotone,
- 21:24Speaker 2: but he was very short, and you could tell, as
- 21:27Speaker 2: you just said that that stuff was bothering him about
- 21:30Speaker 2: replacing him, about turning the ball over four or five
- 21:34Speaker 2: times in that game against the Chargers, and he went
- 21:38Speaker 2: out there and he played a near perfect game. He
- 21:40Speaker 2: was what twelve or fifteen one hundred seventy five yards,
- 21:44Speaker 2: you know, three touchdowns.
- 21:46Speaker 1: What more do you want from him?
- 21:48Speaker 5: Now?
- 21:48Speaker 1: Again, he has to build upon that. Now.
- 21:51Speaker 2: You know, he got that bad taste out of his
- 21:53Speaker 2: mouth against the Chargers, and he put it all together
- 21:56Speaker 2: against a very inferior opponent. But you still have three
- 22:00Speaker 2: interesting games coming up, and he's got to build upon
- 22:02Speaker 2: this because if he doesn't, if he goes back to
- 22:06Speaker 2: what we've watched most of this season, then the critics
- 22:08Speaker 2: are going to come out of the woodwork ones again.
- 22:11Speaker 3: Right right, And he knows that.
- 22:14Speaker 1: He knows that.
- 22:16Speaker 3: But for now, this was a game.
- 22:19Speaker 4: I mean, this was the right opponent that came along
- 22:21Speaker 4: at the right time they needed. They needed a game
- 22:24Speaker 4: like this, and they were clicking, you know. I mean,
- 22:27Speaker 4: say what you will about the Raiders, but the Eagles
- 22:29Speaker 4: were really clicking in this game. And it started with
- 22:32Speaker 4: the quarterback. He was terrific. And you know, Barkley had
- 22:34Speaker 4: some good runs, you know, Bigsby and the time that
- 22:38Speaker 4: he got in there with the carriers he got. I mean,
- 22:40Speaker 4: he certainly made the most of it. And you know,
- 22:43Speaker 4: I've kind of come around to my different way of
- 22:46Speaker 4: thinking on this, you know, moving forward, I would like
- 22:50Speaker 4: to see more of Bigsby, I really would. And I
- 22:54Speaker 4: know that Saquan's going to be the guy. I mean,
- 22:56Speaker 4: there's no question about that, and he should be I
- 22:58Speaker 4: to fully get that. But there is a different pace
- 23:02Speaker 4: that those two guys bring to the offense. And I
- 23:06Speaker 4: mean it's not your classic thunder and lightning where you
- 23:10Speaker 4: have one big power back and then a little scat back.
- 23:12Speaker 4: I mean, Bigsby is, you know, pretty stout guy at
- 23:16Speaker 4: a straight ahead kind of runner too. But they take
- 23:20Speaker 4: the ball and they hit the hole in different ways.
- 23:22Speaker 4: I mean, Barkley is kind of a slasher and Bigsby
- 23:27Speaker 4: is He's just a straight.
- 23:28Speaker 3: Ahead, boom, take it and go guy.
- 23:31Speaker 4: But I think they both bring a little bit of
- 23:33Speaker 4: something different to the offense, and it is certainly a
- 23:37Speaker 4: change up for the defense to account for the different
- 23:39Speaker 4: kind of running back. And I would think moving forward
- 23:44Speaker 4: might not be especially in these last couple of games
- 23:46Speaker 4: here against especially the two games against Washington which figured
- 23:50Speaker 4: to be pretty easy games. You know, to back off
- 23:53Speaker 4: of sa Quon a little bit, help them save a
- 23:55Speaker 4: little gas for the postseason, but lean a little bit
- 23:58Speaker 4: more on Bigsby because the more he's getting the ball,
- 24:01Speaker 4: the more I like him in the offense, and I
- 24:03Speaker 4: think he actually brings you a little something.
- 24:05Speaker 2: I also like the fact that Nick Sirianni got his
- 24:09Speaker 2: starters out of there early in the fourth quarter. I mean,
- 24:11Speaker 2: this game was in hand, You've got a short week
- 24:14Speaker 2: coming up against a divisional foe. You got your team
- 24:17Speaker 2: off the field healthy compared to some teams around the
- 24:21Speaker 2: NFL on Sunday they lost some devastating that that had
- 24:25Speaker 2: to succumb to some devastating injuries. And I like the
- 24:28Speaker 2: fact that, you know, Nick got some other people in
- 24:30Speaker 2: there just to give them some reps. I e. Tanner McKee,
- 24:34Speaker 2: you know who everybody's been clamoring for. And Tanner McKey
- 24:37Speaker 2: is not ready for the big stage yet. You know,
- 24:39Speaker 2: he may get his turn one day down the road somewhere,
- 24:41Speaker 2: but not yet. So I thought Nick handled that extremely
- 24:44Speaker 2: well in terms of, Okay, you guys got your work in.
- 24:48Speaker 2: You did, We're supposed to do that. Basically, the Raiders
- 24:51Speaker 2: are mentally on the bus. They've been on the bus
- 24:53Speaker 2: since the first quarter. And I just like the fact
- 24:58Speaker 2: that he gave some other people some more work because
- 25:01Speaker 2: you just don't know the way players are dropping like flies,
- 25:04Speaker 2: especially in the latter part of the season. You just
- 25:07Speaker 2: don't know what you're gonna have to call upon somebody
- 25:09Speaker 2: to step up and feel a Hughes gap for you exactly.
- 25:13Speaker 3: And I think it looks like some of the guys
- 25:15Speaker 3: in the offensive line.
- 25:17Speaker 4: Are maybe getting a little a little healthier, I mean,
- 25:19Speaker 4: because they certainly are playing better. I mean, Dickerson the
- 25:22Speaker 4: last couple of games has looked better, my Lotta has
- 25:25Speaker 4: played well, and it could be in the next couple
- 25:29Speaker 4: of weeks you might get Lane Johnson back too. So
- 25:32Speaker 4: I mean those are all certainly positive things. And I
- 25:36Speaker 4: was talking a moment ago, we were talking about the
- 25:38Speaker 4: idea of Hurts running the ball being an important part
- 25:42Speaker 4: of this offense moving forward, and I think it is
- 25:45Speaker 4: one of the other things that I definitely think I
- 25:47Speaker 4: would like to circle and put on Nick Sirianni's desk
- 25:50Speaker 4: moving forward, especially postseason. Is Keith Dallas Goddard in the offense?
- 25:56Speaker 3: Yes, I mean there were there.
- 25:58Speaker 4: Were weeks that there were weeks this season and when
- 26:00Speaker 4: Goddard was almost invisible, and I always felt that he's
- 26:04Speaker 4: too He's too good a player and too too It
- 26:07Speaker 4: makes too many big plays in his offense to just
- 26:10Speaker 4: sort of lose track of him for quarters or halfs
- 26:14Speaker 4: and this team kind of did that. And I think
- 26:17Speaker 4: over the last two games, even the Chargers game that
- 26:19Speaker 4: you lost, but this game in particular, you saw what
- 26:23Speaker 4: a big play kind of player Dallas Goddard is. Two
- 26:28Speaker 4: more touchdowns. That little shovel pass inside where he's taken
- 26:32Speaker 4: to Brian Westbrook role and taken it into the end
- 26:34Speaker 4: zone is a sweet little play that they've come up with.
- 26:37Speaker 4: And I didn't realize until after the game when they
- 26:40Speaker 4: were tallying up the stats that Dallas Goddard has now
- 26:44Speaker 4: moved into the top five all time Eagle receivers. That
- 26:50Speaker 4: he passes Brent Sellick and is now one of the
- 26:53Speaker 4: five leading receivers in the history of this franchise. I mean,
- 26:57Speaker 4: that's pretty amazing. It's let me see, it's Harold Carmichael's
- 27:02Speaker 4: number one, Zach Ertz is number two, the great Pete
- 27:06Speaker 4: Retz laugh from the sixty team is number three, and
- 27:10Speaker 4: Brian Westbrook's number.
- 27:11Speaker 3: Four, and Dallas Goddards number five.
- 27:15Speaker 4: Only four guys in the history of this franchise have
- 27:17Speaker 4: caught more passes than Dallas Goddard. So in the game
- 27:21Speaker 4: planning for what remains of the season and then the postseason,
- 27:25Speaker 4: I think every week there should be a design in
- 27:27Speaker 4: there that we got to get the ball to Dallas
- 27:29Speaker 4: Goddard because I like it when the ball's in his hands.
- 27:32Speaker 1: I couldn't agree with you more. And he was wide
- 27:34Speaker 1: open us so many of his rounds.
- 27:36Speaker 2: He had six catches for seventy yards, a couple of touchdowns,
- 27:39Speaker 2: but the fact that he was he had so much space.
- 27:43Speaker 2: And again, you know, we're playing a Raiders team that
- 27:46Speaker 2: didn't look like they had practiced all week getting ready
- 27:48Speaker 2: for this game. But we've seen Dallas when he can
- 27:52Speaker 2: be a matchup nightmare for defenses, especially safeties and linebackers,
- 27:57Speaker 2: in many many games prior to this game on Sunday.
- 28:00Speaker 2: And as you as you continue this journey of trying
- 28:04Speaker 2: to jockey for positioning and seeding in the playoffs, you've
- 28:08Speaker 2: got to spread the wealth even more so if teams
- 28:10Speaker 2: are going to be committed to taking aj out, double
- 28:13Speaker 2: team in him or going you know, high low on DeVante,
- 28:17Speaker 2: you know you've got other weapons.
- 28:19Speaker 1: You know you've got Johanna Johnson, You've got a Dallas Goddard.
- 28:22Speaker 1: You know in there.
- 28:23Speaker 2: You're gonna have to utilize any and everything you have
- 28:26Speaker 2: to get to that Promised Land again if you're so
- 28:29Speaker 2: lucky to do so.
- 28:31Speaker 4: There's a they have a play in their offense that
- 28:35Speaker 4: is a really good play, and I mean they can
- 28:38Speaker 4: use it almost any time you get to a third
- 28:42Speaker 4: and five something. I mean, it's a it's a great
- 28:44Speaker 4: play or even a great play to start a series
- 28:47Speaker 4: on a first and ten is quarterback under center play action,
- 28:51Speaker 4: fake handoff, a little bit of a half boot leg
- 28:55Speaker 4: by the quarterback going outside. Goddard throws a block and
- 28:58Speaker 4: then comes and run with the quarterback on that parallel route,
- 29:03Speaker 4: and he's always wide open and it's an easy throw
- 29:07Speaker 4: and once he catches it, he's always in the clear
- 29:10Speaker 4: and he'll catch it ten to fifteen yards of yak
- 29:13Speaker 4: after he catches it, and it's like a really safe throw.
- 29:16Speaker 4: But out of that formation, with the way they run that,
- 29:18Speaker 4: that's a play you can go to any time you won,
- 29:21Speaker 4: anytime you need a play. I mean, that's right there,
- 29:24Speaker 4: either to start a series or to convert a third down.
- 29:29Speaker 2: When you look at both sides of the ball. In
- 29:31Speaker 2: this game, the offense racked up three hundred and eighty
- 29:34Speaker 2: seven yards thirty one points. The defense held the Raiders
- 29:38Speaker 2: to a grand total of seventy five yards of offense. Heck,
- 29:42Speaker 2: most offenses in the National Football League accidentally gets seventy
- 29:46Speaker 2: five yards in a quarter, let alone in an entire game.
- 29:49Speaker 2: Which were you more impressed with the offensive prowess or
- 29:53Speaker 2: the defensive prowess? Defense at four more sacks, that's eleven
- 29:56Speaker 2: now in the last two games.
- 29:58Speaker 4: Yeah, except holding again, you know it's the Raiders, Okay,
- 30:04Speaker 4: but you hold any NFL team the seventy five yards
- 30:07Speaker 4: to offense, that's pretty extraordinary.
- 30:11Speaker 3: And they did that. I mean the last time they
- 30:14Speaker 3: looked up the stats.
- 30:15Speaker 4: But the last time the Eagles held an opponent to
- 30:17Speaker 4: that few yards in a game, it was nineteen fifty
- 30:22Speaker 4: five against the Chicago Cardinals in a game at Conniemac Stadium.
- 30:27Speaker 4: So I mean that game that was like that was
- 30:30Speaker 4: so it was like four stadiums ago. So I mean,
- 30:33Speaker 4: so that's how that's how amazing that number is. But
- 30:37Speaker 4: you know, this defense, with the exception of the Bears game,
- 30:40Speaker 4: which which was really bad, I think everybody acknowledges that.
- 30:43Speaker 4: But other than that, I mean, this defense heck, as
- 30:48Speaker 4: up and down as this offense has been all year.
- 30:51Speaker 4: The reason you're nine to five is because of your defense.
- 30:54Speaker 4: They got you here, and so to see them, to
- 30:57Speaker 4: see them play as well as they played this week. Again,
- 31:00Speaker 4: it's the number thirty two offense too. Yeah, I mean
- 31:03Speaker 4: you would have expected the Eagles to smother them, which
- 31:06Speaker 4: they did, but to the tune of seventy five yards. No,
- 31:09Speaker 4: even I didn't expect that.
- 31:12Speaker 2: You know, one man's absence is another man's opportunity. You know,
- 31:15Speaker 2: Jalen Carter still nursing the shoulder injuries and stuff, and
- 31:18Speaker 2: of course they slide Brandon Graham into the d tackle spot.
- 31:23Speaker 2: He gets two quarterback sacks. I think he's better suited
- 31:26Speaker 2: at this stage right to attack from the tackle spot than.
- 31:30Speaker 4: He is the edge spot. Yeah, it's really true. And
- 31:35Speaker 4: guy felt so good for him. I mean, just you know,
- 31:38Speaker 4: because there were so many people that when he came back,
- 31:41Speaker 4: had very mixed emotions about it. You know, I know,
- 31:44Speaker 4: he just retired at the perfect time. He went out
- 31:46Speaker 4: with the Super Bowl, but you know, he wanted to play,
- 31:50Speaker 4: you know, and even he admitted that I didn't feel
- 31:52Speaker 4: like I was really ready to retire so to get
- 31:55Speaker 4: the opportunity to come back and not just as you know,
- 31:58Speaker 4: the locker room present sort of the guy on the sidelines,
- 32:01Speaker 4: which he gives you all that too, but the fact
- 32:03Speaker 4: that he's still a pretty useful player, and Vic Fangio
- 32:07Speaker 4: has now come up with this idea to play him inside,
- 32:11Speaker 4: and he's very effective in there. I mean a couple
- 32:14Speaker 4: of those sacks, a couple of those plays that pass rush,
- 32:16Speaker 4: I mean he was bull rushing that guard right back
- 32:19Speaker 4: into Kenny Pickett's lap. So I mean he can still
- 32:22Speaker 4: do it even at thirty seven. You know, I don't
- 32:26Speaker 4: know how many people are really aware of it, but
- 32:29Speaker 4: I mean the play that will forever define his career,
- 32:33Speaker 4: which is the strip sack in the Super Bowl. Tom Brady,
- 32:36Speaker 4: he was lined up a tackle on that play too,
- 32:39Speaker 4: you know. I mean, and that was a Jim Schwartz
- 32:41Speaker 4: might have been the only right call Schwartz made in
- 32:43Speaker 4: that game, but he just felt like in that situation
- 32:49Speaker 4: he wanted to get Graham inside matched up on the
- 32:53Speaker 4: guard next to Cox because he felt like Brandon's quickness,
- 33:00Speaker 4: that edge quickness that he.
- 33:02Speaker 3: Had would be a little more than that guard could handle.
- 33:05Speaker 4: They were double TV Cocks on this side, but he
- 33:08Speaker 4: was one on one here, and Schwartz thought that with
- 33:12Speaker 4: Graham's quickness that he could get inside and get in
- 33:16Speaker 4: on top of Brady, which he did, and so that
- 33:20Speaker 4: play he made from the tackle position, Well, now it
- 33:24Speaker 4: looks like he's playing it more often, and he played
- 33:28Speaker 4: really He played really good on Sunday, and I think
- 33:30Speaker 4: you're probably going to see more of it. I mean,
- 33:32Speaker 4: even if whenever Carter comes back, and I don't know
- 33:35Speaker 4: if it'll be this week, I'm almost sure he'll play
- 33:38Speaker 4: against Buffalo. But even when Carter comes back, you know,
- 33:42Speaker 4: I think you're gonna want to give Brandon some snaps
- 33:44Speaker 4: in there, because he looks pretty.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Good right as we move forward, what concerns do you
- 33:51Speaker 2: still have with his team? We got three games left,
- 33:55Speaker 2: they're closing in on a divisional title. Thank you Dallas
- 33:58Speaker 2: for losing the Minnesota on Sunday night. So basically you've
- 34:01Speaker 2: aided the Eagles in terms of getting closer to that
- 34:04Speaker 2: divisional title. But there's still question marks out there about
- 34:07Speaker 2: this team. What is your biggest question mark about this
- 34:10Speaker 2: Eagles team right now?
- 34:14Speaker 4: For as good as they looked on Sunday, and they
- 34:17Speaker 4: did they have the offense were all to it. I
- 34:19Speaker 4: just worry about the inconsistency of the offense. You know,
- 34:22Speaker 4: we've seen them, we've seen them be good in spurts.
- 34:25Speaker 4: We've seen them be real good in spurts, and then
- 34:28Speaker 4: we've seen it, they've seen them just go dead, you know.
- 34:31Speaker 3: And I wonder now that they have I don't want
- 34:36Speaker 3: to say redesigned the.
- 34:37Speaker 4: Offense, but kind of rethinking the offense, bringing some new
- 34:41Speaker 4: elements to it. Maybe that's not going to happen now,
- 34:45Speaker 4: but that's my worry is that the offense can the
- 34:50Speaker 4: Eagles offense can kind of go like the Phillies offense.
- 34:54Speaker 4: You know, they're great, great in the regular season, and
- 34:56Speaker 4: you get in the postseason and all of a sudden
- 34:58Speaker 4: you're in the dead ball era, you know. And I,
- 35:01Speaker 4: you know, I just worry that the that the Eagles
- 35:04Speaker 4: offense will get back into that three and out, three
- 35:06Speaker 4: and out, three and out mode, which you can't afford
- 35:09Speaker 4: to have against good teams in the postseason. That's probably
- 35:13Speaker 4: my concern. Defensively, I don't really have any I mean, defensively,
- 35:17Speaker 4: I think they're good. I think they're really good. Uh
- 35:20Speaker 4: and I think they're going to continue to be good.
- 35:21Speaker 4: And by the way, I think I think Epps's role
- 35:26Speaker 4: in the safety has really helped. I think he has
- 35:28Speaker 4: come in and I think he's played really well.
- 35:30Speaker 5: Uh.
- 35:31Speaker 4: I mean, he wasn't there all year, but that brought
- 35:33Speaker 4: him back now. And they've got him pairing up with
- 35:36Speaker 4: Blanket Ship back there, and that might be the best
- 35:38Speaker 4: That might be the best safety pair that they've had.
- 35:40Speaker 4: I mean, I think Epps has really given them a
- 35:43Speaker 4: little more stability and a little more of a physical
- 35:45Speaker 4: presence back there than what they had before. I Mean,
- 35:47Speaker 4: nobody's talking much about him because you got all the
- 35:49Speaker 4: other guys, but I actually think that he is He
- 35:52Speaker 4: has made them a little stronger on the back on
- 35:54Speaker 4: the back end of that defense.
- 35:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 35:57Speaker 2: I'm looking at your hoodie here and I see the
- 36:00Speaker 2: number fifty on there. What does that signify?
- 36:04Speaker 6: Uh?
- 36:04Speaker 1: This is a hoody that was.
- 36:07Speaker 4: Given to me by the drummer for the George Thurgood
- 36:09Speaker 4: and the Destroyers Rock group.
- 36:12Speaker 1: What how'd you get that?
- 36:16Speaker 4: The gentleman who is who is the drummer for George
- 36:19Speaker 4: Thurgood and has been from the origin is a local guy.
- 36:25Speaker 4: He's from Delaware, uh, and is a big Philly sports
- 36:28Speaker 4: fan and a big Eagles fan.
- 36:30Speaker 5: Uh.
- 36:30Speaker 3: And he came out to see Tommy and me.
- 36:33Speaker 1: Wow.
- 36:33Speaker 4: He came out to see Tommy and me, uh when
- 36:36Speaker 4: we were at People's Light in Malvern back in January.
- 36:40Speaker 4: And and he liked the He really liked the play.
- 36:43Speaker 4: And he liked to play so much that he he
- 36:45Speaker 4: sent hoodies to me and everybody in the cast.
- 36:48Speaker 3: So I wear this proudly.
- 36:50Speaker 2: That's awesome. And you you just rub availables with the
- 36:52Speaker 2: biggest stars. Christy Brinkley one year, George Thoroughgood band members
- 36:57Speaker 2: the next year. I want to be like you when
- 36:59Speaker 2: I grow up, Ray, But the problem is I don't
- 37:02Speaker 2: know what I'm going to grow up to, be honest.
- 37:04Speaker 3: You're having too much fun right now, exactly.
- 37:07Speaker 2: Hey, that's going to wrap up this edition of Birds Weekly,
- 37:10Speaker 2: presented by the Inside the Birds Network for the well
- 37:13Speaker 2: known Ray Dtinger. I'm Derek Gunner until next time, especially
- 37:17Speaker 2: after they come off a win against the Washington Commanders.
