• 0:55
Speaker 1: Well, I guess we'll find out pretty quick.
• 0:57
Speaker 1: So our story of the week Wondering if it's time to take the keys away from an elderly parent.
• 1:08
  Speaker 3: Here we go.
• 1:08
Speaker 3: What's that boy looking?
• 1:11
  Speaker 1: at me.
• 1:11
Speaker 1: General Motors has developed technology intended to help inform that.
• 1:18
Speaker 3: Peeking at elderly parents' mice back Thorny decision.
• 1:22
Speaker 1: Gm engineers and product specialists have applied for a patent on a system that helps determine whether older motorists can still drive in a safe and proficient manner.
• 1:31
Speaker 1: Using both vehicle and driver data, the company can calculate a driver retirement score and notify motorists of their performance.
• 1:42
Speaker 1: Deciding to retire from driving a vehicle can be difficult, as driving can provide a sense of freedom, the engineers wrote in the application, which the US Patent and Trademark Office published August 28th.
• 1:56
Speaker 1: While previous methods have offered some specific measures of competence, the engineers said GM's system relies upon a more comprehensive scope of data inputs.
• 2:08
Speaker 1: Those include monitoring driver reaction times.
• 2:12
Speaker 1: Squint driver reaction times to what yeah, is my question.
• 2:18
  Speaker 1: Crossing streets?
• 2:20
  Speaker 1: I don't know?
• 2:20
Speaker 1: Yeah, squinting and signs of fatigue.
• 2:24
Speaker 1: That's from that little camera that you're looking at, yep.
• 2:27
Speaker 1: It can also detect the frequency with which other motorists honk and determine whether turn signals are used appropriately and whether drivers comply with road signage.
• 2:39
Speaker 1: Motorists can also incorporate other considerations, such as medical conditions and whether others have filed a complaint about their driving.
• 2:49
Speaker 1: The system can determine whether driving improves or deteriorates over time.
• 2:55
Speaker 1: Once a score has been computed, the system can generate a report with recommendations for the driver.
• 3:01
Speaker 1: It can also notify a designated contact about the score.
• 3:06
Speaker 1: Gm does not comment on patent filings, according to the spokesperson, and it was unclear whether the company had any firm plans for commercializing the system, but the market for such technology has grown.
• 3:19
Speaker 1: There were almost 52 million licensed drivers age 65 and older in the US in 2022, a 77% increase over the last two decades.
• 3:29
Speaker 1: Old man Boomers, according to the latest data the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has posted in its 2025 roundup on older drivers Don't point at me.
• 3:40
Speaker 1: Seniors are now outliving their ability to drive safely for the first time in history, according to motoring organization triple a.
• 3:49
Speaker 1: Well, don't buy their stuff.
• 3:50
Speaker 1: And they now must plan for a driving retirement in the same fashion they plan for a financial one.
• 3:57
Speaker 1: Drivers age 65 and older accounted for 19 percent of traffic fatalities in 2023, the latest year for which complete NHTSA statistics were available.
• 4:08
Speaker 1: That's a half point higher than the 25 to 34-year-old demographic Overall.
• 4:13
  Speaker 1: Experts, caution.
• 4:14
Speaker 1: It is difficult to make apples-to-apples comparisons because of the increased vulnerability among seniors and the differences in types of roads that distant, distinct age groups tend to drive most often.
• 4:32
Speaker 4: David has a question.
• 4:32
  Speaker 1: Where's?
• 4:33
  Speaker 3: your headset.
• 4:35
  Speaker 4: It's got a microphone.
• 4:36
Speaker 4: It's got a microphone on it.
• 4:38
Speaker 1: He's got a question, but how are we going to relay that question?
• 4:40
Speaker 1: Smoke signals yes, we can hear you now, David, if you'll speak up.
• 4:46
Speaker 2: So if you like to drive fast and you're as old as you are, would it determine that you're driving dangerously because you like to drive fast?
• 4:54
Speaker 1: I think that that is a possibility.
• 4:56
Speaker 2: Or do you put it in parameters?
• 4:57
Speaker 2: I like to drive between 80 and 100.
• 4:59
Speaker 3: Well then, he's driving his age.
• 5:01
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 5:02
Speaker 4: It's kind of like playing golf.
• 5:03
Speaker 4: I am driving my age.
• 5:04
Speaker 4: Everybody wants to shoot their age.
• 5:05
Speaker 4: You drive your age I don't have any comments.
• 5:12
Speaker 1: The speedometer doesn't go that high there is that I don't know if there are parameters that are built.
• 5:18
Speaker 1: This is strictly a report card.
• 5:21
Speaker 3: And I would imagine.
• 5:22
Speaker 3: That you plug it into the car and it records all of the stuff that you're doing or not doing correctly dovetails into the hub wallet hub, exactly exactly because one of my um, one of the granddaughters, had one of those on a car.
• 5:36
Speaker 4: Their mom got it and put it on there and and the insurance company knew everything that this driver was doing.
• 5:42
Speaker 4: Well, guess what insurance went?
• 5:45
Speaker 4: Up exactly because we now know exactly the idea was here we'll give you credit for being a safe driver, but they don't tell you is that we'll also raise your bill if you're not a safe driver well, what are the parameters of being safe?
• 5:57
Speaker 3: what are their parameters versus that driver's parameters of being safe?
• 6:00
Speaker 3: Okay, I stopped at a stop sign and then or they, it or whatever, the insurance companies probably look at it as a Detroit stop or a roll-through, or you know.
• 6:09
  Speaker 1: A Detroit stop.
• 6:10
Speaker 1: Have you ever heard that?
• 6:10
Speaker 1: No, have you ever heard that?
• 6:11
Speaker 3: That's when you roll a stop sign, yeah.
• 6:12
Speaker 3: If you cover the stop sign and just slow down and they take it that's called a Detroit stop.
• 6:17
Speaker 3: I never knew that.
• 6:18
  Speaker 3: Yeah, well.
• 6:20
  Speaker 4: Where I come from, that's called $150.
• 6:25
Speaker 4: But the thing I have about all this stuff is I know that some of the newer cars that we've driven, like you said, it kind of looks at your eyes and all that stuff.
• 6:31
Speaker 4: Yeah, Depends on your driving position.
• 6:33
Speaker 4: Sometimes you're blocking it and it don't like it.
• 6:37
Speaker 1: Well, because if it's blocking it, that means your hands aren't in the correct position on the steering wheel.
• 6:43
Speaker 1: Right, there you go.
• 6:44
Speaker 1: But I've driven with you before.
• 6:46
Speaker 1: Never again, what yeah?
• 6:50
Speaker 4: No, he's looking at you.
• 6:51
Speaker 4: He raises his own insurance.
• 6:53
  Speaker 4: No.
• 6:54
Speaker 1: I'm looking at you by looking through him.
• 6:58
Speaker 3: That's what that is.
• 6:58
Speaker 3: No, I never catch me speeding.
• 7:01
Speaker 4: Me either, not in several years anyway.
• 7:06
Speaker 1: Well, this morning, on the dash back to the house, I was, uh, speeding just a touch, I have to admit that, so insane I just go with the flow of traffic.
• 7:13
  Speaker 4: How?
• 7:13
Speaker 1: about some recalls, shall we?
• 7:15

• 8:33
Speaker 3: Well, it doesn't deflate properly or inflate properly.
• 8:37
Speaker 4: So, in other words, if you go through the windshield, because the airbag didn't come out.
• 8:40
Speaker 1: Would you like to know what that sounds like?
• 8:41
Speaker 1: There's no bag, it just goes.

Speaker 1: Second to the last, here we go a 1976 Ford F-150 that's got kind of a funcatated 70s paint job on it with lots of stripes and stuff, but it looks clean and it looks cool.
• 16:19
Speaker 1: I would consider it if the undercarriage were okay.
• 16:23

• 16:34
  Speaker 2: I don't know.
• 16:35
  Speaker 2: I think I got a card $15,000.
• 16:36
  Speaker 1: $15,000?
• 16:37
Speaker 1: How about you're going the wrong way?
• 16:39
  Speaker 1: $7,750.
• 16:43
  Speaker 2: That's a heck of a deal.

  Speaker 3: He's out.
• 19:52
Speaker 3: His contract was up and they said no more fiddling around.

Speaker 3: You're out so far as an Indy driver.
• 19:58
Speaker 3: But who picked him up?
• 19:59
  Speaker 3: Andretti?
• 20:00
Speaker 3: Andretti picked up Will Power, thank goodness.
• 20:03
Speaker 3: Will Power is a great guy.
• 20:04
Speaker 3: I follow him a lot and the reason being so, he's going to go over to Formula One.
• 20:08
Speaker 3: Well, no, he's going into Indy under Andretti.
• 20:11
Speaker 3: Colton Hurta has been pulled from Indy and he's going to be in Formula One as the American driver, but Colton has to qualify and get certifications on F1 tracks.
• 20:24
Speaker 3: So Colton is going to be driving the F2 cars, the F2 series to build up and get going for that licensing.
• 20:31
Speaker 3: Now you've got two drivers that are already on the Andretti team and I've got them here.
• 20:36
Speaker 3: You've got Botas and Botas Botas, I think his name is Botas.
• 20:40

• 20:50
  Speaker 1: You're not a peon, you're a peon.

Speaker 1: Perez, valtteri, valtteri, yeah, how does he go by?
• 21:01
  Speaker 1: Volley for short.
• 21:02
Speaker 3: V-A-L-T-T-E-R-I Valtteri Valtteri Is that his last name or first name?
• 21:08
Speaker 3: First name Now, 45 victories, 71 polls, giving Andretti a veteran with pedigree, which is good.
• 21:15
Speaker 3: Kyle Kirk and Marcus Erickson already drive for Andretti Cadillac F1 and Andretti are both TWG Motorsports teams run by Dan Taurus, whose motorsports operation includes Spire Motorsports and NASCAR.
• 21:30
Speaker 3: This guy's got more fingers in racing than a proctologist.
• 21:33
Speaker 3: He's got it all over the place, so it's going more fingers in racing than a proctologist.
• 21:35
Speaker 3: He's got it all over the place, so he's going to be good Than a proctologist.
• 21:38
  Speaker 3: Anyways, follow it.
• 21:41
Speaker 3: So you've got Colton going into F1.
• 21:44
Speaker 4: Short fingers, long fingers, and you've got.
• 21:49
Speaker 3: Will Power going over to Indy on the Andretti side.
• 21:52
Speaker 3: So there you go.
• 21:52
  Speaker 3: That's all racing.

• 22:00
  Speaker 3: There you go.
• 22:01
Speaker 3: What else do you?

• 22:05
  Speaker 3: We certainly do.
• 22:08
Speaker 1: Time now for this hour's car review.
• 22:09
Speaker 1: I had a chance to drive the 2026 Hyundai Palisade.
• 22:12
  Speaker 1: It's been around a while.
• 22:13
Speaker 1: The final assembly location is Ulsan, korea.
• 22:17
Speaker 1: Eleven trim levels Eleven Count them.
• 22:21
Speaker 1: It's just too many to relay to you.
• 22:25
Speaker 1: Go online and find out.
• 22:27
Speaker 1: If you're interested, I would encourage you because this is something that I think that you may be interested in.
• 22:32
Speaker 1: The reviewed trim level was the Calligraphy all-wheel drive.
• 22:36
Speaker 1: This is a standard SUV and competes against all the big boys from all of the big manufacturers.
• 22:45
Speaker 1: Seats, including the driver, up to seven.
• 22:48
Speaker 1: Exterior changes from last model year, complete redesign for 2026.
• 22:52
Speaker 1: This is the second generation of the Hyundai Palisade.
• 22:56
Speaker 1: Very linear shape, straight line from the front fender all the way back to the D pillar.
• 23:03
Speaker 1: Concentric wheel openings, rectangular grille with a similar front lighting design.
• 23:11
Speaker 1: Rear lighting mimics the front design.
• 23:15
Speaker 1: What I liked about it?
• 23:16
Speaker 1: The exterior gets high marks for a unique modern styling element throughout with high-quality materials.
• 23:24
Speaker 1: What could use improvement?
• 23:26
  Speaker 1: Nothing.
• 23:27
Speaker 1: Interior highlights Integrated instruments with the infotainment encompassed in the dash and in the infotainment system.
• 23:38
Speaker 1: It interfaces in a center stack design, easy to understand and use controls, comfort controls and through entertainment infotainment screen.
• 23:51
Speaker 1: I don't know what I meant by that, but I'm sure it was good.
• 23:53
Speaker 1: The thought process was there, but it just kind of didn't work out the way.
• 23:58
Speaker 1: I wanted it to.
• 23:59
Speaker 1: Sorry, Big area for the cargo area back there with the third row down.
• 24:07
Speaker 1: What I liked changeable interior lighting colors.
• 24:12
  Speaker 1: It's fun.
• 24:12
Speaker 1: What could use improvement?
• 24:14
  Speaker 1: I don't know.
• 24:15
Speaker 1: It has a 3.5 liter V6 motor in it gasoline, 287 horsepower, 260 pound-feet of torque, Eight-speed automatic transmission with a tow rating of 5,000 pounds Gets 18 in the city, 24 in the highway for a combined of 20.
• 24:32
Speaker 1: I got 18.8 miles per gallon over 409.4 miles.
• 24:37
Speaker 1: What I liked about it?
• 24:40
Speaker 1: Well, the powertrain may be adequate for a soccer mom, Okay.
• 24:49
Speaker 3: But well, I'll tell you Not a lot of spotter it could use improvement.
• 24:53
Speaker 1: It needs an optional engine with a little bit more power, because the thing weighs 5,000 pounds.
• 24:58
Speaker 1: I was going to ask it's very heavy, it's pretty big yeah, downshifting this thing, it's slow to recognize the fact that you're trying to go on the highway.
• 25:12
Speaker 1: You're at 50 miles an hour, you need to pass somebody, so it's a lag.
• 25:15
Speaker 1: It's not a lag, it's short on getting downshifted.
• 25:21
Speaker 1: Okay, it won't downshift fast enough.
• 25:23
Speaker 1: And then when it does, then it downshifts too far and you're back in the seat.
• 25:28
Speaker 1: There's a little issue For me, like I said, soccer mom probably wouldn't be a problem.
• 25:35
Speaker 1: What I liked about it, I like the compliance.
• 25:37
Speaker 1: That's not your father's oldsmobile, but boy is this thing sweet.
• 25:40
Speaker 1: I just say fix the underpowered motor to react to the eight speed automatic transmission.
• 25:48
  Speaker 1: That's all I can say.
• 25:49
Speaker 1: Base price it's not56.55 is the base trim price.
• 25:54
Speaker 1: Price is tested $58.03, but you can get in one of these for $40,930.
• 26:00
Speaker 1: So here are the competitors in size Chevy Suburban Premier $78,095.
• 26:07
Speaker 1: Now, remember the one that I tested was $58.03.
• 26:10
Speaker 1: So the Chevy Suburban Premier, which is up the scale, $78,000.
• 26:14
Speaker 1: Kia Telluride, its sister or brother SX Prestige, starts at 52,885.
• 26:21
Speaker 1: And the Ford Expedition, king Ranch, 86,170.
• 26:26
Speaker 1: I had no clue that they were that expensive.
• 26:28
Speaker 1: No, but the big Ford Expedition is $86,000.
• 26:33
  Speaker 1: That's a long money.
• 26:33
Speaker 1: Man for a Ford Expedition is $86,000.
• 26:35
Speaker 1: That's a lot of money man for a Ford Expedition, just saying.
• 26:38
Speaker 3: Well, you pay for the recalls.
• 26:40
Speaker 4: I was going to say.
• 26:40
Speaker 4: Good news is it'll get recalled and get fixed.
• 26:44
Speaker 3: We're just throwing our two cents.
• 26:46
Speaker 1: So you buy a Ford and I'm not trying to bust Ford, no, it's not that.
• 26:50
Speaker 1: It's not that I like Ford.
• 26:52
Speaker 1: So you buy a brand new ford and it gets recalled along with all the other ford recalls and they're in there trying to fix all of these recalls at the dealership.
• 27:04
Speaker 1: What are you going to do for a car if it's a new?
• 27:07
Speaker 1: Brand new 86 000 ford expedition?
• 27:10
Speaker 1: Are you going to get one of like size to drive while they fix yours?
• 27:17
  Speaker 4: probably not.
• 27:17
Speaker 4: I don't know that they do that anymore.
• 27:19
Speaker 4: Well, some dealerships do your, your lexus and cadillacs they do give you a oh, yeah, yeah, but like my, I got a senate law, it's got that's 86 000.
• 27:28
Speaker 1: I can go buy a lexus for 86 000 yeah, yeah, absolutely so why would I go buy a ford?
• 27:33
Speaker 4: well, well, because you want, you're a ford person, I got a.
• 27:34
  Speaker 4: Absolutely.
• 27:34
Speaker 4: So why would I go buy a Ford?
• 27:35
Speaker 4: Well, because you're a Ford person.
• 27:36
  Speaker 4: I got a son-in-law.
• 27:37
Speaker 4: That way, he's going to buy a Ford, no matter what.
• 27:40
Speaker 1: I'm a GM guy and he's a Ford guy and I've got a story about that as well.
• 27:43
Speaker 3: During your recalls, you had Fords being recalled from 2018.
• 27:47
Speaker 3: So that's seven years ago.
• 27:49
Speaker 3: They're now recalling vehicles from 18 to 25.
• 27:53
Speaker 3: What happened in that seven years?
• 27:56
Speaker 3: Nothing broke and now, all of a sudden, that part is being recalled.
• 27:59
  Speaker 3: I just don't get it.
• 28:01
Speaker 1: I don't know what the criteria is for recalls as far as years are concerned.
• 28:05
Speaker 1: I assume that if it's the same model that's being recalled 18 to 25 right, then that's for all of them.
• 28:16
Speaker 1: Some of them will say to you that, okay, yes, but it's only those that have the electronic such and such fill in the blank certain part right and you go online safercargov, type in your vin number and it'll tell whether your ford blah blah is being recalled.
• 28:35
  Speaker 4: Your specific vehicle.
• 28:37
Speaker 1: And if you've not taken it in, it's going to say you need to take it in.
• 28:41
Speaker 1: You could have five recalls on your vehicle and not know it.
• 28:44
Speaker 1: Type in the VIN.
• 28:46
Speaker 3: Well, and they also send you notifications, because when I had the Cadillac, but what if you move?
• 28:50
  Speaker 4: a lot.
• 28:51
Speaker 3: Well, that's true too.
• 28:52
Speaker 3: But they sent you a little card saying, hey, don't forget, you got a recall, my father, his van, his Honda, got a recall on the airbag.
• 29:01
Speaker 4: I mean everybody was getting them.
• 29:02
Speaker 4: Well, then he got a recall on the recall airbag.
• 29:07
Speaker 4: I mean he got it fixed, then he got another one and he ended up getting three of them.
• 29:12
Speaker 4: But he didn't know about it until I told him about it and I started checking for him on a regular basis.
• 29:16
Speaker 4: You know, like you said, I think we've told several people, or at least used to go get your car inspected, check for recalls at the same time once a year, absolutely.
