- 0:40[SPEAKER_00]: Hey everybody, Brian Smith here with the Iain team series and your daily influence.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_00]: Today we're going to revisit topic that we live every day here at the Iain team series and at Iain business advisors and that is smart, which is really the foundation of
- 1:03[SPEAKER_00]: Everything we do at IA.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I'm going to take a step for those that maybe haven't spent any time with us and review what smart is.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: Back in the eighties, smart was developed as a foundation for setting goals and it stands for being specific, measurable, attainable, realistic or relative and timely and
- 1:32[SPEAKER_00]: Really what the foundation says is that when you set a goal, you should be able to articulate and understand each of those aspects, specificity, a measurement if it's attainable.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_00]: If it's relative to your area of influence or realistic and is it timely?
- 1:51[SPEAKER_00]: Is this the right time and can we do it in a timely fashion?
- 1:56[SPEAKER_00]: There's different variations and there's different ways to apply it, but generally speaking, if you set goals that are smart.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_00]: You have covered all aspects of goal setting to ensure that at least people understand what the goal is and that it is or is not something that can be done.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_00]: We at IA believe that it's just a placeholder.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's a noun.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's something that sits there.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_00]: And in fact, if it's anything like New Year's resolutions or any other goal that you faced, you know that goals tend to fall by the wayside.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_00]: if they're not driven properly, if they're not executed properly.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_00]: And that's one of the biggest struggles we have in our area of influence is how do you go from developing a goal, getting people to believe in the goal, and then moving them past that
- 3:01[SPEAKER_00]: getting it and believing it to doing it and making it something that ends up being realistic and valuable for your organization.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_00]: And therein lies the foundation of who we are at I.A.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_00]: Why we think peach individuals in advantage and everything that we do in our area of influence is so important.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_00]: We take it to its next phase, which is the action phase going from that verb that smart goal to smart tactics.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: And we keep it simple because the tactics that you develop to reach your goals should follow the exact same format.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_00]: They should be specific.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: You should be able to measure the progress of those tactics.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody in your organization should understand that those tactics are attainable and what is needed to be done to attain those tactics.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_00]: That it's realistic.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_00]: It's in our area of influence to do whatever it needs to be done along the way and that it's timely.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_00]: which means an hour world in our area of influence.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_00]: It's smart as everything.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_00]: It's the foundation of all of our management.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_00]: It's indeed also part of how we communicate with each other.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_00]: If we measure the success of our communications by being able to hold it up to smart, are my conversations specific?
- 4:29[SPEAKER_00]: Do they provide or ask for measurements?
- 4:32[SPEAKER_00]: do they lead us to attainability, real ability or relativity, and are they timely conversations?
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: Then we continue to move through the smart management model and we will start moving together in the right direction.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_00]: And if the whole organization understands that smart is our foundation, it creates a very simple place for us to work from.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't matter what we're doing, it doesn't matter what problem we're tackling.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_00]: If we all sit back and say, what's not smart about this or what is smart about this?
- 5:06[SPEAKER_00]: And if we challenge each other to what smart means in every specific area of influence we find ourselves, we will find that the issues aren't as dramatic or as confusing or as conflicting or as chaotic as they may once have been.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_00]: What we will find is a quicker path to root cause.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: When we ask what's not smart about something, it takes us to root cause analysis much faster.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_00]: When we challenge somebody to provide deeper specifics and oftentimes, we do that just by asking questions, getting people to move through each layer of a process until they get to the root.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_00]: The root of whatever it is that's driving that what's they're doing.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_00]: And it doesn't matter if you're doing accounting, if you're doing sales, if you're doing operations, if you're supporting somebody, smart will guide you.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_00]: If there's confusion, find what's missing in smart.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_00]: Is it the specifics?
- 6:10[SPEAKER_00]: Do we not understand a measurement?
- 6:13[SPEAKER_00]: Have we assumed attainability and not really put the right people in the right places that takes us back to specific?
- 6:21[SPEAKER_00]: also realistic, is it realistic to ask certain people in our organization to do certain things if they're not ready?
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: And if they're not ready, what will it take to get them ready?
- 6:31[SPEAKER_00]: You can apply smart to that and come up with an answer.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_00]: And is it timely?
- 6:37[SPEAKER_00]: Our read, myself, the team or organization are clients, are vendors.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_00]: Are they ready for what we're asking them to do?
- 6:48[SPEAKER_00]: And do we understand that readiness?
- 6:50[SPEAKER_00]: Do we understand that commitment?
- 6:52[SPEAKER_00]: Smart can guide us.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_00]: It's not just a goal.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_00]: It's a goal.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_00]: It's an action.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_00]: It's everything in our area of influence.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_00]: And it is our mission to share how to apply smart throughout your life, throughout your areas of influence.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_00]: So that you, the individual, singular or the organizations that you work in can take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way in the most smart way possible for your area of influence.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_00]: I hope that you will take away from today a better understanding of smart and a challenge that
- 7:30[SPEAKER_00]: You'll ask yourself, what wasn't smart about that or what is not smart about what I'm doing or what is smart about where we're going.
- 7:40[SPEAKER_00]: Hold yourself to the smart level, hold yourself accountable to smart and see where it takes you.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_00]: Look how simple it is to apply and ensure that your path stays on a smart path.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_00]: Remember our books are available, individual influence, find the eye in team, positive influence, be the eye in team.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_00]: And our new book coming out in about six weeks, responsible influence, build the eye in team.
