• 1:04
Speaker 4: I'm good? How are you?
• 1:06
Speaker 5: I am really good. I'm actually excited.
• 1:09
Speaker 3: We have a player, a former WU player than have
• 1:12
Speaker 3: you introduced? I would love that who also played for
• 1:16
Speaker 3: the Buffalo Bills, and I consider him a friend, and
• 1:19
Speaker 3: I'll talk more about that friendship.
• 1:20
Speaker 4: You're taking half of my introduction, but that's okay.
• 1:24
Speaker 5: I'm gonna let you go ahead and take it. Go
• 1:25
Speaker 5: ahead and take it all right.
• 1:27
Speaker 7: So, our honored guest tonight is a former, as Carl said,
• 1:32
Speaker 7: professional football player. He was a linebacker in the NFL
• 1:36
Speaker 7: for fourteen seasons during the nineteen eighties and nineties. He
• 1:39
Speaker 7: played collegiate football for West Virginia University and was recognized
• 1:44
Speaker 7: as an All American during his time there. He also
• 1:46
Speaker 7: played professionally for the Buffalo Bills, Atlanta Falcons, and Minnesota Vikings.
• 1:52
Speaker 7: I give Carl the SADA the NFL. There you go,
• 1:56
Speaker 7: and played in four Super Bowls with the Bills.
• 1:59
Speaker 4: We'd like to work.
• 2:00
Speaker 7: Welcome to the podcast tonight, mister Darryl Tally. Welcome Darryl.
• 2:04
Speaker 6: Well, thank you guys for having me.
• 2:07
  Speaker 4: Lately.
• 2:08
Speaker 3: Yeah, this one is gonna be fun because I already
• 2:11
Speaker 3: know you, and I know that there is no there
• 2:16
Speaker 3: is no following any kind of a script with you,
• 2:18
Speaker 3: So who knows what you'll say.
• 2:20
Speaker 6: So, but but but I would have got much better,
• 2:24
Speaker 6: I will say, though.
• 2:26
Speaker 3: I don't I well, let me make be the judge
• 2:29
Speaker 3: of that after the show's over. So so let's let
• 2:34
Speaker 3: me let me take you back and ask you a
• 2:36
Speaker 3: question about WVU, your time with WVU, and what do
• 2:43
Speaker 3: you see now with WVU compared to what you saw
• 2:49
Speaker 3: it as being a player there, a great player there,
• 2:52
Speaker 3: and what do you see now that you think makes
• 2:55
Speaker 3: it different not as I don't know if you want
• 2:59
Speaker 3: to say that this is the right, we're not as good,
• 3:01
Speaker 3: or what do you think about the game of football
• 3:04
Speaker 3: that is being played at WVU overall?
• 3:08
Speaker 6: Okay, let's see. Well, thank you guys for having me
• 3:11
Speaker 6: first of all, being on Here's the thing. What I
• 3:16
Speaker 6: see at WU right now. I see a program that
• 3:20
Speaker 6: was that was in flux right now where we're trying
• 3:24
Speaker 6: to go from one coach to another and one type
• 3:28
Speaker 6: of player to another. So we've got seventy eight guys,
• 3:32
Speaker 6: eighty guys we brought in that Rich didn't recruit from
• 3:35
Speaker 6: high school. He's got a few high school guys in
• 3:38
Speaker 6: and he's recruited. But basically this thing has been dope
• 3:41
Speaker 6: through the portal. Well, you got seventy eight new guys
• 3:45
Speaker 6: coming into a school, and that's just like everybody coming
• 3:50
Speaker 6: in as a freshman, everybody coming in as rookies, because
• 3:54
Speaker 6: nobody has any prior knowledge of what his teams are,
• 3:57
Speaker 6: what's to be expected, or anything like that. So that's
• 4:02
Speaker 6: a huge difference for a coach. A coach has usually
• 4:05
Speaker 6: got some sort of footing where he's had time to
• 4:08
Speaker 6: build his program and get his thoughts across to his team,
• 4:12
Speaker 6: how he wants to practice, how he wants the plays
• 4:14
Speaker 6: to be ran. A coach has had a chance to
• 4:17
Speaker 6: do that. Well, we really haven't had that much time.
• 4:20
Speaker 6: We've had time for guys to learn the system, but
• 4:23
Speaker 6: now in order for the system to become theirs in
• 4:26
Speaker 6: dem on it. So that's just going to take time.
• 4:28
Speaker 6: There's nothing else but time going to get that.
• 4:32
Speaker 3: Is a w W fan base willing to be that
• 4:37
Speaker 3: patient with the coach.
• 4:39
Speaker 6: Here's the thing, here's the thing. We got no choice
• 4:42
Speaker 6: because where other choices, we we got one of our
• 4:50
Speaker 6: own in the house. We've got somebody we feel and
• 4:52
Speaker 6: we trust. We've got somebody who's played at that level,
• 4:55
Speaker 6: who's played the way that we want to play football.
• 5:00
Speaker 6: Everybody held accountable, So yeah, you've got a guy in
• 5:03
Speaker 6: the house that can do the job. Now it's the
• 5:06
Speaker 6: idea of getting him the just like you said, getting
• 5:09
Speaker 6: a shift the proper ingredients to make a cake. We
• 5:13
Speaker 6: got to go get him the ingredients for a Kike
• 5:16
Speaker 6: or he's got to go do his own shopping because
• 5:19
Speaker 6: they're not letting me do his shopping for it. I'm
• 5:21
  Speaker 6: not his baker.
• 5:23
Speaker 7: Yeah. Good analogy, and I think you're right. I think
• 5:27
Speaker 7: the fan base does have to be patient.
• 5:29
  Speaker 4: Darryl.
• 5:29
Speaker 6: You got to give him a year. You got to
• 5:31
Speaker 6: get him two years, three years to do that, because
• 5:34
Speaker 6: you got to remember, you got young, seventeen year old
• 5:37
Speaker 6: kids that you're bringing in that you're expecting to do
• 5:40
Speaker 6: things with. And think about that. Think about you when
• 5:44
Speaker 6: you were seventeen years old? How old screwy was your brand?
• 5:49
Speaker 6: Where were you going?
• 5:51
Speaker 4: What do you mean, Daryl.
• 5:52
Speaker 7: Girls still in that stage. I don't know if you
• 5:54
Speaker 7: ever left at adolescent.
• 5:56
  Speaker 8: Well I just.
• 5:58
Speaker 6: Went from thirteen to fourteen.
• 6:00
Speaker 3: Okay, that's a little bit I would have said for him,
• 6:05
Speaker 3: but I'll work with him.
• 6:09
Speaker 5: Go ahead. Well, well, let me ask you this and this.
• 6:13
Speaker 3: Look this is kind of more direct, and I'm curious
• 6:16
Speaker 3: to see because you kind of sounded like you you
• 6:19
Speaker 3: really trust in in in the.
• 6:21
Speaker 6: Head coach in the process. Okay, I trust in the process.
• 6:25
  Speaker 6: Is the process?
• 6:26
Speaker 3: Or do you like the coaches pick or the university's
• 6:30
Speaker 3: pick of the coach.
• 6:32
Speaker 6: I like the university's pick as a coach number one,
• 6:35
Speaker 6: because I feel I feel like I've got one of
• 6:38
Speaker 6: my own in the house. It's been through the same
• 6:41
Speaker 6: wars I've been through. This had to be down there
• 6:43
Speaker 6: throwing up in the in the basement of the powers,
• 6:48
Speaker 6: down into on the field, throwing up. I've seen that.
• 6:52
Speaker 6: I don't have to wonder about that. I know that.
• 6:56
  Speaker 6: I know that's what he's been through. I don't have
• 6:58
Speaker 6: to guess I was there seeing it. M nothing be
• 7:04
Speaker 6: self experience. So that much, I know that much, I'm
• 7:07
Speaker 6: not worried about. But what I'm worried about is giving
• 7:10
Speaker 6: him a proper amount of time. Because here's the thing.
• 7:13
Speaker 6: You grow wasn't built in a day, right, and you're
• 7:16
Speaker 6: asking to turn a program around that had good players
• 7:19
Speaker 6: in it, but a lot of guys left. And this
• 7:22
Speaker 6: is a time nine times now, these times now you
• 7:26
Speaker 6: if you don't like the place you can lead, there's
• 7:29
Speaker 6: no repercussions for you leaving.
• 7:31
  Speaker 2: Now.
• 7:31
Speaker 6: There used to be repercussions for us.
• 7:34
Speaker 3: And if you play good for you, it's all about money.
• 7:43
Speaker 3: So I think that makes it hard to hard, hard
• 7:47
Speaker 3: to grow a team with a seed with guys year
• 7:51
Speaker 3: in and year out, because the better guy I'm leaving.
• 7:54
Speaker 6: Yeah, the better guy's going to leave. So what I'm
• 7:56
Speaker 6: thinking is Richie's got to get him a nucleus of guys.
• 7:59
Speaker 6: He's got a crew guys this year, he may lose
• 8:01
Speaker 6: a few, and he's got a recruited class next year.
• 8:04
Speaker 6: Next year will give him two classes of recruits of
• 8:08
Speaker 6: his guys. He went out and got. He hand picked
• 8:11
Speaker 6: what he wanted. Okay, everybody else to know from the portal,
• 8:14
Speaker 6: that's fine. Then he goes to the third year, the
• 8:17
Speaker 6: third year coming out, I think rich should be ready
• 8:20
Speaker 6: to go and he should be full with bare He
• 8:24
Speaker 6: should be unfabold at that time because he should have
• 8:27
Speaker 6: a roster full of his guys that now know exactly
• 8:32
Speaker 6: what to do because he's brought him in from freshmen.
• 8:35
Speaker 6: Now the juniors. Thinking about your your your growth from
• 8:40
Speaker 6: your freshman year to your junior year. Would anybody know
• 8:43
Speaker 6: you as a freshman if they seen you then and
• 8:46
Speaker 6: then seeing you as a junior.
• 8:49
Speaker 5: You can say, man, you might want to take they
• 8:51
  Speaker 5: do a junior.
• 8:56
  Speaker 1: I know A.
• 9:03
Speaker 7: Yeah, so, uh, Darryl, I'm gonna I'm gonna switch lanes
• 9:07
Speaker 7: and take you back in time a little bit to
• 9:10
Speaker 7: East Cleveland where you attended Shaw High School.
• 9:13
Speaker 4: I'm here, oh okay, okay.
• 9:16
Speaker 7: I read some some information about your time there that
• 9:19
Speaker 7: during that time you played both full back and linebacker,
• 9:23
Speaker 7: and it kind of pushed away some of your recruiting
• 9:27
Speaker 7: schools because you never settled on either position, and so that.
• 9:30
Speaker 6: No playa man, you.
• 9:32
Speaker 4: Didn't play both in high school.
• 9:35
Speaker 6: I was all, okay. My sophomore year, I played running
• 9:38
Speaker 6: I tried to play running back myself.
• 9:40
Speaker 4: Running back, okay, that's my bad. And linebacker no YEA
• 9:45
  Speaker 4: one year.
• 9:46
Speaker 6: I looked at the guy, Yeah, I got okay, okay,
• 9:52
  Speaker 6: I ran. I ran a trap and I had to
• 9:55
Speaker 6: guys about two hundred and seventy pounds apiece me, and
• 9:59
Speaker 6: I was that was that I got him off the ground.
• 10:04
Speaker 6: I went back over to mister ballman, and I totally
• 10:07
Speaker 6: if I ever asked you to play running back again,
• 10:11
Speaker 6: kicked me in my ass. My expression, that's what I said.
• 10:14
Speaker 4: Well, that explains the whole the whole the bottle there.
• 10:17
Speaker 6: Right, never been back when the other sat off.
• 10:21
Speaker 3: That's what got me on the defensive side off. So yeah,
• 10:24
  Speaker 3: I experienced that, and I was like, I don't really
• 10:26
Speaker 3: think I want to do this.
• 10:27
Speaker 5: I'd rather hit you than you hit me.
• 10:29
Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, yeah hit me.
• 10:32
Speaker 6: It's pretty this way. They made a sandwich out of me.
• 10:36
Speaker 6: You can't remember when I was in school. I was
• 10:39
Speaker 6: only thirty five pounds. Oh wow, Okay, these guys are
• 10:44
  Speaker 6: seventy Yeah.
• 10:45
  Speaker 4: Yeah, peace.
• 10:46
Speaker 6: So yeah, I'll strike fire and anybody. I'll strike fire
• 10:51
  Speaker 6: on anybody.
• 10:52
Speaker 4: Yeah, it don't matter.
• 10:55
Speaker 7: Okay, well let me maybe let me let me see
• 10:57
Speaker 7: if this part's correct. Maybe the Internet was lying to
• 10:59
Speaker 7: me all day today. Uh did you did you actually
• 11:02
Speaker 7: miss your last seven high school games with a broken ankle?
• 11:06
  Speaker 6: Yep?
• 11:06
Speaker 9: Okay, okay, di varsity games okay, my junior year, my senior.
• 11:11
Speaker 4: Year, okay, So broke my ankle, yes, okay.
• 11:16
Speaker 6: Senior year, broke my hand, broke your.
• 11:18
  Speaker 4: Hand okay, okay.
• 11:19
Speaker 7: So whenever those things, those injuries occurred, then w U
• 11:24
Speaker 7: came knocking on your door and actively recruited you. You know,
• 11:27
Speaker 7: what were your initial thoughts thinking about the school.
• 11:35
Speaker 4: The late response, I'm not sure if we want to
• 11:38
  Speaker 4: hear this, Aryl.
• 11:41
Speaker 6: Was, I got to go to a lot of schools.
• 11:44
Speaker 6: But what was interesting when I got to West Virginia
• 11:50
Speaker 6: there were a lot of guys from my area there.
• 11:53
Speaker 6: There were already a lot of guys from the Ohio
• 11:55
Speaker 6: area there, Okay. And the other thing that attracted me
• 12:00
Speaker 6: was it was eight the one right that's the girls,
• 12:07
Speaker 6: and I was like five. I mean it was like
• 12:14
Speaker 6: it was four to four. I mean it was a
• 12:16
Speaker 6: lot closer Syracuse. It was nine to one in West Virginia.
• 12:20
Speaker 6: So I figured, I'm going with the odds and I
• 12:22
Speaker 6: have more fun on my recruiting trip in West Virginia.
• 12:25
Speaker 4: I bet you did.
• 12:28
Speaker 6: I'm a guy that I think the odds in my favor,
• 12:33
Speaker 6: I said, I'm not that guy who's not going to
• 12:35
Speaker 6: bet on himself and trust always better on Darryl.
• 12:40
Speaker 5: And trust me, I've been around him him.
• 12:45
Speaker 6: Darl I know what I'm working with it. I know
• 12:50
  Speaker 6: what I got, I know what I am, I know
• 12:53
  Speaker 6: how I am. I will not quit. Daryl's going. Darrel's
• 12:56
Speaker 6: in this for the long long. If he decides to
• 12:58
Speaker 6: do it, He's getting in it. He's getting involved, And
• 13:01
  Speaker 6: isn't it Isn't.
• 13:02
Speaker 3: It interesting though, because I think when people think of
• 13:06
Speaker 3: certain players, you know, they see them, they think that
• 13:09
Speaker 3: they're you know, they evaluate them as good, great, whatever.
• 13:13
Speaker 3: And but when you actually talk about your self confidence,
• 13:19
Speaker 3: it seems like it's like, well, wait a minute, is
• 13:22
  Speaker 3: he cocky? And and I don't think like, I don't
• 13:25
Speaker 3: think that like people understand like what like what confidence that.
• 13:30
Speaker 5: You have to have?
• 13:31
Speaker 6: Just no, I just know what I know.
• 13:34
Speaker 5: Right, And and people and people can be uncomfortable with that,
• 13:39
  Speaker 5: you know.
• 13:39
Speaker 6: They Yes, I've had people trying to tell me what
• 13:42
  Speaker 6: I knew that I didn't know. I knew it to
• 13:46
Speaker 6: be true. They're trying to tell me it's not. And
• 13:48
Speaker 6: I'm like, no, no, no, no, no, you got the wrong one.
• 13:53
Speaker 6: And that's when they that's when they get the idea that, yeah,
• 13:57
  Speaker 6: he's stubborn, he's something different, he's a different human because
• 14:01
Speaker 6: he's duped a little different when it comes it up.
• 14:03
Speaker 3: And most of the most most great players, most players
• 14:07
Speaker 3: who get to the next level, are different.
• 14:10
  Speaker 5: They are different.
• 14:10
Speaker 4: Oh I'll attest to that.
• 14:14
Speaker 6: Yes, we are, we are.
• 14:17
  Speaker 5: We're a little different. We're a little different.
• 14:20
  Speaker 3: Man.
• 14:21
Speaker 6: Oh god, we don't. We're not wired the same way.
• 14:24
Speaker 6: That's that's the way may have regular wiring, and that's.
• 14:29
Speaker 4: What motivates you for sure. So well let's go. Let's
• 14:33
Speaker 4: go back in time. Not quite as far.
• 14:35
Speaker 7: This time, Daryl, Okay, but we'll go to nineteen seventy nine,
• 14:38
Speaker 7: eighty two. Uh, you were part of the Mountaineer team.
• 14:42
Speaker 7: You led the team I think in eighty one to
• 14:44
Speaker 7: the Peach Bowl and the Gator Bowl in eighty two,
• 14:46
Speaker 7: and you were one and one in those games, correct you.
• 14:48
Speaker 7: I think you had a victory over Florida impeach and
• 14:53
Speaker 7: then lost to Florida State Gator bawl. Right, m yeah,
• 14:57
Speaker 7: Gator Bowl has always been tough for Mountaineers, has I
• 15:03
Speaker 7: like both? Don't let him tell you such blasphemy. I
• 15:06
Speaker 7: love Yeah, go ahead.
• 15:09
Speaker 6: Gator Bowl was a trip. Yeah, I mean the Peach Bowl,
• 15:14
Speaker 6: Beach Bowl. We had we were we had something to prove. Yes,
• 15:19
Speaker 6: we had been disrespect I felt disrespected. We were the
• 15:24
Speaker 6: little lonely child from West Virginia. You were a little
• 15:27
Speaker 6: chargle from West Virginia playing football. We had no business
• 15:30
Speaker 6: out there playing with those big boys from Florida, those
• 15:33
Speaker 6: boys in Florida. They were all Americans, all of these
• 15:36
Speaker 6: great guys, and what are they gonna do? Play these
• 15:39
Speaker 6: little lonely kids from West Virginia, Florida. We brought a
• 15:42
Speaker 6: mud turtle to the game and a fight. Wow, a
• 15:46
Speaker 6: fight and a resolve to the game that nobody had seen. Yeah,
• 15:50
Speaker 6: they didn't think. They didn't think that we would come
• 15:53
Speaker 6: at him that hard. They honestly didn't think we were
• 15:56
Speaker 6: gonna come play. They thought they were gonna roll us over.
• 16:00
Speaker 6: And then they got a big blood slap in the
• 16:02
Speaker 6: face of reality. But the shot that had been heard
• 16:07
Speaker 6: around the world was sent off the year before, and
• 16:12
  Speaker 6: that was Oklahoma.
• 16:15
Speaker 4: That's right in eighty right, yep, Yeah, you were part
• 16:19
Speaker 4: of that victory. Yeah, that was huge. I remember it now.
• 16:22
  Speaker 6: Yeah, I was. I was a part of the I
• 16:24
Speaker 6: was a part of the vicious beating we took too.
• 16:28
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 16:30
Speaker 6: I was part of the reason why it didn't become
• 16:34
Speaker 6: once we went out there and we had that that
• 16:36
Speaker 6: went out there, right, because you could beat fifty forty
• 16:42
Speaker 6: two points and you could do nothing but stand there. Now,
• 16:47
Speaker 6: remember I was a freshman, but did probably honest, when
• 16:52
Speaker 6: you're looking across the street and you got Thomas Slot,
• 16:56
Speaker 6: Kenny King, David Overstreet h and who was the other
• 17:03
Speaker 6: and then you got reeb sorry and Jackson for the Guards.
• 17:07
Speaker 6: Well they got an all pro offense over there, Yeah,
• 17:10
Speaker 6: and they beat us by forty two points.
• 17:14
Speaker 4: Woodshed trip, right, that was a wood ship.
• 17:19
Speaker 9: Yeah, And that was when you learned how football was
• 17:24
Speaker 9: really to be played, really for me, because then we
• 17:28
Speaker 9: got to go into the Penn State mm hm.
• 17:31
Speaker 4: And you're part of that and you got to take it.
• 17:34
Speaker 6: That was a part of what beating we took. Then.
• 17:37
Speaker 6: I was part of the beating that we took from Pitt.
• 17:40
Speaker 6: So those two national championship teams plus Oklahoma was enough
• 17:44
Speaker 6: of a beating from me and scarring in my life
• 17:48
Speaker 6: for me to have to come out and get some
• 17:49
Speaker 6: revenge on some people.
• 17:51
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 17:52
Speaker 7: And you guys just and now, Jeff, how was that?
• 17:55
Speaker 7: Jeff Hosteler was with you, right, was it?
• 17:57
  Speaker 4: Jeff?
• 17:58
  Speaker 6: Yep?
• 17:58
  Speaker 4: That's what I thought.
• 18:00
Speaker 6: Yeah, here's even funnier party. The year before, we're playing
• 18:06
Speaker 6: Penn State in Morgantown. I knocked a Blackledge out of
• 18:10
Speaker 6: the game. Jeff comes in the game, wins the game
• 18:13
Speaker 6: for Penn State. Next year, Jeff comes to West Virginia.
• 18:18
Speaker 6: We tore we go to Oklahoma, Jeff's my quarterback? Then
• 18:23
Speaker 6: did show ironic? We go to the Super Bowl, that
• 18:26
Speaker 6: super quarterback, I'm playing against him.
• 18:29
  Speaker 4: Yes, that's crazy.
• 18:33
Speaker 5: That's crazy for sure.
• 18:34
Speaker 6: Now, so I'm looking at that and yes I'm going.
• 18:39
Speaker 6: And I have an argument with my roommate Bruce about him.
• 18:42
Speaker 6: I told him, I said, Bruce, you know you got
• 18:45
Speaker 6: to get Jeff on the ground. You know you got
• 18:47
Speaker 6: to get him on the ground. You got to get
• 18:49
Speaker 6: him on the ground, because you know it be of
• 18:51
Speaker 6: the strong. You got to get him down. And what
• 18:55
Speaker 6: did he do? Bruce misses him in the back for
• 18:58
Speaker 6: sight a safety. Had he's got the safety. We win
• 19:02
Speaker 6: the game because they don't go down to sport a
• 19:04
  Speaker 6: touchdown before halftime.
• 19:05
Speaker 7: Oh gosh, okay, yeah, okay, that's rough.
• 19:10
Speaker 6: Okay, Now here's the other part of that story. Y'ell
• 19:14
Speaker 6: makes a play on third down. We still don't have
• 19:16
Speaker 6: to go down and make that play. We still don't
• 19:18
Speaker 6: have to do that because during the same drive, I
• 19:21
Speaker 6: missed a tackle that I made. I missed in the backfield,
• 19:24
Speaker 6: gobbing made across the line of scrimmage, and he made
• 19:26
Speaker 6: the first down. So there's that.
• 19:30
Speaker 3: Isn't it interesting how you can remember like the worst place.
• 19:34
Speaker 6: When you get you get to sit back. Now you've
• 19:38
Speaker 6: got perspective on everything. You see where you streamed up.
• 19:42
Speaker 6: You know exactly what you did wrong. Yeah, and if
• 19:47
Speaker 6: you can go but I can do it again, would
• 19:48
Speaker 6: you be able to do it right? I still don't
• 19:51
  Speaker 6: think so.
• 19:52
  Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know. I truly I'm with you.
• 19:55
Speaker 6: Here's the thing. Fate is fake. It's gonna happen.
• 20:00
Speaker 3: And don't you think and don't you think too. It's
• 20:04
  Speaker 3: a it's a it's a balancing act too, because if
• 20:07
Speaker 3: you don't have those, you are really gonna think that
• 20:10
Speaker 3: you're something special, like because nobody's beat nobody's gonna beat
• 20:14
Speaker 3: me deep until somebody beats me.
• 20:16
  Speaker 4: Deep until it.
• 20:19
Speaker 3: And then once it happens, you don't get to say
• 20:21
Speaker 3: nobody's gonna beat me deep.
• 20:24
Speaker 6: That's right. And trust me, I understand that because I
• 20:29
Speaker 6: used to be the guy sitting there. Tell you don't worry.
• 20:32
Speaker 6: The fore BET's mine. I got the outcut. I got
• 20:35
Speaker 6: that outcut, that's mine. They got out go to me,
• 20:38
Speaker 6: I got that. You think everything's deep and ed?
• 20:41
Speaker 5: Are you take care of the outside I.
• 20:44
Speaker 6: Gotta get my ass out there, and you you don't
• 20:48
Speaker 6: see it, and that's you think. Today's day, you don't
• 20:50
Speaker 6: see outside linebackers that are able to get there and
• 20:54
Speaker 6: cover that guy. And I'm like, wait a minute, this
• 20:57
Speaker 6: is what I did, and I'm looking at it and
• 21:00
Speaker 6: happens every day. But see somebody run that stupid route.
• 21:03
Speaker 6: And I'm like, look, you need to play for stake.
• 21:09
Speaker 6: You do something different and you got to get somebody
• 21:12
  Speaker 6: under that route.
• 21:14
Speaker 3: Let me ask you this to that point, the plays
• 21:17
Speaker 3: that you and again this is all this all runs
• 21:21
Speaker 3: into my head. The plays that you can see that
• 21:24
Speaker 3: you watch and you see guys not make and you
• 21:27
Speaker 3: think to yourself, man, why can't they not make that play?
• 21:33
Speaker 4: As you sit on your couch.
• 21:36
Speaker 5: We are on the couch. We're on the couch, watch it.
• 21:40
Speaker 3: And I'm sure that it's happened to me that that
• 21:43
Speaker 3: that place, that somebody beat me. But then but then
• 21:46
Speaker 3: my justification to that is, see I even got a
• 21:49
Speaker 3: back up there. Well, if that's you know, if that happened,
• 21:52
Speaker 3: Andre Reid did that to me, Jerry Rice did that
• 21:55
Speaker 3: to me, you throw out the big man.
• 22:00
Speaker 10: Yes, because you're all aware of that that's just like
• 22:05
Speaker 10: I'm aware of Randy Boss looking at me after a
• 22:09
Speaker 10: Russ Francis hits me my rookie year, and I look
• 22:13
  Speaker 10: up through.
• 22:13
Speaker 6: The air hole. Rand is going damn Randy's cross all
• 22:21
Speaker 6: the time. So when everybody used to same on BV,
• 22:24
Speaker 6: I used to say, damn, I've seen him already.
• 22:27
  Speaker 5: Oh wow.
• 22:28
Speaker 7: Oh, let me ask you this, yes, Darrell about it
• 22:33
Speaker 7: seems like you when you started in nineteen seventy nine
• 22:36
Speaker 7: with the Mountaineers, that was a bad year, and you
• 22:39
Speaker 7: guys built a team. You brought in Jeff Hosteler, you
• 22:42
Speaker 7: added some people that could make you better so that
• 22:45
Speaker 7: you went to those Gator or the Gator Bolling eighty
• 22:47
Speaker 7: two and the peach Ball in eighty one. Do you
• 22:49
Speaker 7: feel like in this day and time that your team
• 22:52
Speaker 7: that you built and from seventy nine to eighty two
• 22:55
Speaker 7: and was so successful with do you think that would
• 22:57
Speaker 7: even be possible into day's world with the transfer portal
• 23:02
Speaker 7: and ni L? I mean, do you do you feel
• 23:05
Speaker 7: like that you would have stayed.
• 23:06
Speaker 6: We'd have broken Let's put it this way, we'd have
• 23:09
  Speaker 6: broke the n I L team. We'd have broke it.
• 23:13
Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree, with that.
• 23:14
Speaker 6: Yeah, diould have been like, uh, we can't paid that one.
• 23:19
Speaker 6: We ain't paying. But then again, you know what, that
• 23:21
Speaker 6: stuff still went on. To be honest with you, Okay,
• 23:24
Speaker 6: you can't. You can't say that it didn't has been
• 23:26
Speaker 6: going on since the attorney. This is the n I
• 23:30
Speaker 6: l is just them bringing it to light. Course what
• 23:33
Speaker 6: it is, just course, what it is. This is what
• 23:36
Speaker 6: he's going on. I ain't going through the shade on
• 23:40
Speaker 6: nobody and no, no dust Yeah we both know. Well
• 23:47
Speaker 6: am I am, I am I speaking on the turn.
• 23:49
Speaker 5: No you're not. No you're not.
• 23:51
Speaker 6: And we both know.
• 23:52
  Speaker 5: Yes, I know not because I got a dollar. I didn't.
• 23:56
  Speaker 5: I didn't get it, doll, I didn't get it. I
• 23:58
  Speaker 5: didn't get it a dollar.
• 23:59
Speaker 6: But way, but here's the thing. I didn't get a dollar.
• 24:04
Speaker 6: I got one one guy gave me. So I can't
• 24:08
Speaker 6: say that I didn't get one dollar. I got one
• 24:11
Speaker 6: hell some money hand in the middle and got me one.
• 24:17
Speaker 3: See Marshall, right, and Marshall see and and and the
• 24:21
Speaker 3: difference in Marshall than probably a lot of places we had.
• 24:25
Speaker 3: You know, first we had Sonny Randa, who was a
• 24:27
Speaker 3: former NFL player and all that kind of good stuff,
• 24:30
Speaker 3: and he wasn't having that, like he wasn't going to
• 24:34
Speaker 3: have us getting money from anybody.
• 24:36
Speaker 5: You know. Now the program absolutely he's going after that.
• 24:39
  Speaker 5: But yes, I.
• 24:44
Speaker 3: Don't think any and and I might be wrong, and
• 24:46
Speaker 3: you can corrack me when I finished here, but I
• 24:48
Speaker 3: don't think coaches worried about it being wrong.
• 24:51
Speaker 5: I think they worried about how to do it.
• 24:55
Speaker 3: And I think because I've talked to a ton of
• 24:57
Speaker 3: guys that I played in the locker room at the
• 24:59
Speaker 3: Pro Left who talked about getting money and the way
• 25:03
Speaker 3: they got it and how much they got, you know,
• 25:06
  Speaker 3: whether enough.
• 25:07
Speaker 5: For cars and all that kind of stuff. So this
• 25:10
  Speaker 5: isn't new.
• 25:11
Speaker 3: It's just it's the way social media is, the way
• 25:15
Speaker 3: the TV news is. It's all that stuff now is
• 25:18
Speaker 3: getting out and people are comfortable with it. If you
• 25:21
Speaker 3: were getting paid, you were gonna be as private as
• 25:25
Speaker 3: you could be with anybody who's not getting paid.
• 25:29
Speaker 5: But everybody who's getting paid is cool. We're cool.
• 25:32
Speaker 6: Every everybody everybody's getting paid don't know about it. And
• 25:35
Speaker 6: the problem was I wasn't getting paid. It was pretty
• 25:38
Speaker 6: this way. I told myself how bad I was, and
• 25:43
Speaker 6: he told me no, and I will stand on the
• 25:47
Speaker 6: stock of Bibles with w I went to go Senia
• 25:50
Speaker 6: and asked him and he told me, no, we don't
• 25:51
Speaker 6: do things like that. The health and I and I
• 25:55
Speaker 6: and I watched, I watched a great running back that
• 25:59
Speaker 6: needed help. They didn't get it. We didn't keep and
• 26:04
Speaker 6: this guy would have probably I don't know, hmm. I
• 26:09
Speaker 6: say that because I've watched him, played against him and
• 26:15
Speaker 6: seeing what kind of runner he was at the age
• 26:18
Speaker 6: he was. I don't think luckily he got hurt and
• 26:25
Speaker 6: he had some problems. But yeah, one kid, we because
• 26:29
Speaker 6: he asked you, and then I would ask you and
• 26:31
Speaker 6: he told me, no, we don't do things like that.
• 26:34
Speaker 3: Were you there, and I can't remember if you told
• 26:36
Speaker 3: me this before you were you were there with Robert Alexander.
• 26:41
  Speaker 5: Were you there?
• 26:43
Speaker 6: Yeah? I was there with that. I was there with him,
• 26:45
Speaker 6: footing him all of.
• 26:46
  Speaker 3: Them, and and I and I know, I know we've
• 26:49
Speaker 3: had this conversation together because I remember it because Robert
• 26:55
Speaker 3: was my guy, Like he was the guy who was
• 26:59
Speaker 3: talking to me in my ears, saying this is what
• 27:01
Speaker 3: you got to do, you got to put the time
• 27:03
Speaker 3: in and all of those kind of things. And I
• 27:05
Speaker 3: have I have defended him on his time at wv U,
• 27:12
Speaker 3: because what he told me was that you know his
• 27:18
Speaker 3: because he was the guy who told me, don't drink,
• 27:20
  Speaker 3: don't smoke.
• 27:20
Speaker 5: Don't do anything right.
• 27:22
Speaker 3: And and everybody's fully aware of his his his life
• 27:27
  Speaker 3: and and and.
• 27:28
Speaker 5: Where he ended up.
• 27:30
Speaker 3: But he told he came to me and we had
• 27:33
Speaker 3: a conversation long before he passed, and he had said
• 27:37
Speaker 3: to me that he got caught up in the painkillers,
• 27:40
Speaker 3: and the painkillers ended up taking him somewhere else and
• 27:48
Speaker 3: once he got out there, would you if you do you.
• 27:52
Speaker 5: Know, if that's kind of what you would you say?
• 27:55
Speaker 6: That's true relatively, that's relatively truth. Yes, I knew Robber
• 28:01
Speaker 6: as well. That's relatively truth. But my thing was this
• 28:10
Speaker 6: that that took him out. Uh. I don't know what
• 28:16
Speaker 6: else led to it, but there was something he was
• 28:20
Speaker 6: dealing with that he couldn't deal with. It's just like
• 28:23
Speaker 6: an alcoholic. And I've only I can only say that
• 28:26
Speaker 6: because I've gone through it and figured it out my
• 28:30
Speaker 6: damn self. He doesn't. He doesn't realize what's bothering him
• 28:35
Speaker 6: until he's done some work. And if you do enough
• 28:38
Speaker 6: work on yourself, you'll figure out things and that you'll
• 28:41
Speaker 6: have people show you things and there's ways to learn
• 28:44
Speaker 6: about what's going on with you. Do you think so
• 28:49
Speaker 6: he probably needed to have somebody go through that with him,
• 28:54
Speaker 6: And I have had someone do and it has made
• 28:56
Speaker 6: a world a difference in my life. So yes, he
• 29:00
Speaker 6: had he needed somebody to go through that with him.
• 29:03
Speaker 3: Do you think that the fan base, his fan base,
• 29:07
Speaker 3: that was everybody in West Virginia who wanted him to
• 29:11
Speaker 3: go to West Virginia? Do you think that ended up
• 29:14
Speaker 3: becoming like too much pressure, too much pressure, too much
• 29:18
Speaker 3: and create a downfall?
• 29:21
  Speaker 6: Don't I don't think so, because see, here's what I
• 29:23
Speaker 6: looked at like for me, if I choose to go
• 29:28
Speaker 6: to a place, I choose to go there on my own.
• 29:31
  Speaker 5: See, I don't think he did, and I don't think
• 29:33
  Speaker 5: he did that.
• 29:34
Speaker 6: I'm like going there just because you want me to.
• 29:38
Speaker 6: Well see here's the other thing. Well, see i'd heard
• 29:41
Speaker 6: stories about what was said to Kurt Warner and he
• 29:46
Speaker 6: at the same time. They told not to even because
• 29:51
Speaker 6: Robert was the back there, which I thought was byes
• 29:55
Speaker 6: because we had linebackers from Cleveland. But I was still
• 29:59
Speaker 6: going there was from Cleveland. I'm from Cleveland. I'm playing
• 30:02
Speaker 6: linebacker too, So what is that.
• 30:05
Speaker 3: Well, see, I know, I know I played with Kurt
• 30:07
Speaker 3: in the in the North South game, and he said
• 30:11
Speaker 3: that he wasn't he once Robert had gone, he wasn't
• 30:16
Speaker 3: going because what it looked like, it didn't.
• 30:20
Speaker 5: He didn't. He didn't feel like they you.
• 30:24
Speaker 3: Know, because it took a little while be when they
• 30:26
Speaker 3: put him in the eye before they put him in
• 30:28
Speaker 3: the eye backfield. I wanted. I wanted WU to recruit
• 30:31
Speaker 3: me so I could say no I did, and they never.
• 30:37
  Speaker 5: They didn't.
• 30:37
  Speaker 3: They didn't, they didn't, they didn't. I think they came
• 30:40
Speaker 3: to the school, but they didn't. They didn't even talk
• 30:43
  Speaker 3: to me.
• 30:45
Speaker 6: Wow, and and and so like for me, Yeah, there's
• 30:51
Speaker 6: a there's a natural descent or hatred. They're built up already.
• 30:55
Speaker 3: Yes, yes, yes, yes, I was trying to please just
• 30:59
Speaker 3: let me tell you no, please, just let me tell
• 31:01
Speaker 3: you know and again and I go, which at that
• 31:05
  Speaker 3: time wasn't the Marshall w U thing wasn't.
• 31:09
Speaker 5: It wasn't a big deal. It was wv U. And
• 31:11
Speaker 5: then Marshall's over here.
• 31:12
Speaker 3: I ended up going to Marshall just because you know,
• 31:17
Speaker 3: I didn't really have to Marshall.
• 31:20
Speaker 6: Yeah, you got, you gotta go to Marshall because of
• 31:24
Speaker 6: the coach. It was at Marshall. What is his damn name,
• 31:26
Speaker 6: Sonny Randall. Oh, that's what you went there. That's why
• 31:33
Speaker 6: you went there. Yes, yes, that's why you went there.
• 31:36
Speaker 6: That's what I'm having. I'm not having Bringfirk remember names.
• 31:49
Speaker 5: You Welcome to my world. World.
• 31:53
Speaker 6: That's where Randy went to school at. That's where a
• 31:56
Speaker 6: lot of folks went to school and they wanted they
• 31:58
  Speaker 6: wanted the ideas.
• 31:59
Speaker 3: And then you're talking about Bob, Like, now, Bob pruit
• 32:02
Speaker 3: was my dB coach and doctor and.
• 32:03
Speaker 6: Bob Pruitt, Yes, yes, that's my boy. That's my guy.
• 32:11
Speaker 6: He got he gets in your and he gets in
• 32:13
Speaker 6: coach needs too. And that's what I love about him.
• 32:16
Speaker 6: That man there don't care. He he would be a
• 32:19
  Speaker 6: great linebacker coach.
• 32:22
Speaker 3: He was a great dB coach, Like I mean, he
• 32:24
Speaker 3: was like like his approach to the game, it's it's
• 32:31
Speaker 3: super serious and it's super funny and there's nothing in between.
• 32:35
Speaker 3: Like it's always going to be like do this or
• 32:39
Speaker 3: tap you on your helmet and on one side and
• 32:42
  Speaker 3: he jumps.
• 32:42
Speaker 5: To the other side, you know, like he's just like
• 32:45
  Speaker 5: having fun.
• 32:46
  Speaker 4: That's a perfect mixture.
• 32:47
Speaker 5: That perfect to me.
• 32:50
Speaker 3: Him and Pete Carroll are probably two of the best
• 32:55
Speaker 3: individual people that I have ever played for, and I
• 32:58
Speaker 3: think I'm from both of them. I think I'm in
• 33:02
Speaker 3: the NFL because of Coach Preuitt. I think my career
• 33:07
Speaker 3: ends up becoming what I believe is is successful because
• 33:13
Speaker 3: because of that, because.
• 33:14
Speaker 6: Of well, Pete Carroll. I'm gonna tell you what. I'm
• 33:18
Speaker 6: gonna tell you what you got, same got your tree
• 33:21
Speaker 6: ran through mind. Carol was in my tree too, he
• 33:26
Speaker 6: was in WU two. Really I had Pete. No, I
• 33:30
Speaker 6: had Pete Carroll when I was in Buffalo.
• 33:33
Speaker 4: Yes, yes, that was early years.
• 33:35
Speaker 5: Was that after that?
• 33:36
Speaker 3: Was that? Was that after he left Minnesota? Or No,
• 33:39
Speaker 3: this is before he went to Minnesota.
• 33:41
Speaker 6: Oh okay, maybe this is all before. Pete hadn't been
• 33:44
  Speaker 6: anywhere yet.
• 33:45
  Speaker 5: Oh I didn't know that. I didn't know that.
• 33:48
Speaker 6: Yeah, Stee, here's a funny budget. A lot of people
• 33:51
Speaker 6: don't know I've got I've got all of fame coaches
• 33:54
Speaker 6: underneath my tree, and it's that I've had been taught by.
• 33:59
  Speaker 6: And that's funny to me. That's because I'm sitting I'm
• 34:03
Speaker 6: sitting there looking and going, yeah, well, I know how
• 34:06
Speaker 6: he thinks. I know how he thinks. You know, he's
• 34:08
Speaker 6: not gonna go for that. And no, he's not gonna
• 34:10
Speaker 6: say that. I've already been coached by him. I've been
• 34:13
Speaker 6: taught by him already know and.
• 34:16
Speaker 3: Doesn't that doesn't that reality of those type of coaches.
• 34:21
  Speaker 3: So I so I got I got Pete Carroll, I
• 34:24
Speaker 3: got Willie Shaw, I got Tony Dungee.
• 34:27
Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying, Like.
• 34:29
Speaker 4: The best of the BA.
• 34:30
Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, those people are like the best guys
• 34:34
Speaker 3: in coaching, and I got the opportunity to play for them.
• 34:39
Speaker 3: And I'm thinking, if I'm gonna give credit to anybody
• 34:42
Speaker 3: for any amount of success that I had, I'm not.
• 34:46
Speaker 5: I'm struggling until Pete comes.
• 34:48
Speaker 3: Okay, Then Pete comes and then we go to bump
• 34:51
Speaker 3: and run and he's telling me to do this, this, this,
• 34:53
Speaker 3: and this, I do that that that, and all of
• 34:56
  Speaker 3: a sudden, I'm like, I'm I'm gonna watch I'm the
• 34:59
Speaker 3: Pro Bowl, Like what happened here? How did this happen?
• 35:03
Speaker 6: That's Pete. Yes, there's Pete from across the street. That's
• 35:10
Speaker 6: what we are something the kind of names right coaches.
• 35:14
Speaker 7: So well, I'm glad you said that because I'm going
• 35:17
Speaker 7: to bring up didn't you? Did you have some nicknames
• 35:20
Speaker 7: when you played for the Bills, Darryl?
• 35:22
Speaker 6: Yes, I had a bunch of.
• 35:26
Speaker 4: I've got to say this and you've got this is hilarious.
• 35:29
Speaker 7: Did you have a cheering section at rich Stadium that
• 35:32
Speaker 7: was called the Tally Whackers?
• 35:34
Speaker 6: Yep, hands to go back and forth.
• 35:42
Speaker 5: Yes, yes, I love the name that was.
• 35:50
Speaker 6: So I got the name from. I got the name
• 35:53
Speaker 6: from Jerry Trenton in West Virginia. I got it there
• 35:58
Speaker 6: because he's said, every time I see you, you go
• 36:05
Speaker 6: and you knocked out of somebody. So that's what he
• 36:10
Speaker 6: started calling me. Why then it became a dolly.
• 36:13
Speaker 4: Wally Walkers, so amazing.
• 36:16
Speaker 5: How come you didn't have a cheering section, Carl, I wasn't.
• 36:19
  Speaker 5: I wasn't that big.
• 36:21
Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, how wasn't as big as Tally.
• 36:26
Speaker 6: I wouldn't that big at all. I was just having fun.
• 36:29
Speaker 6: You gotta realize when we played football called it was
• 36:34
Speaker 6: about having fun. It was about enjoying each other. It
• 36:37
Speaker 6: was about enjoying the competition of beating the guy and
• 36:40
Speaker 6: then turning around and saying I was my way, She
• 36:45
Speaker 6: did know it and slid explode so much.
• 36:54

Speaker 2: Now back to the conversation.
• 38:24
Speaker 3: So, when your first Pro Bowl? All right, what year
• 38:28
Speaker 3: was it? What was your first Pro Bowl? Okay, nineteen
• 38:32
Speaker 3: ninety When you got there, what was the most interesting
• 38:38
Speaker 3: takeaway when you started? Because you know, when my first one,
• 38:45
Speaker 3: when I got there, I was like, the first thing
• 38:47
Speaker 3: I wanted to figure out was like, Okay, how good
• 38:50
Speaker 3: am I compared to the rest of these people who
• 38:52
Speaker 3: are supposedly the best players in the league that particular year.
• 38:58
  Speaker 3: I and I and I felt like when I when
• 39:00
Speaker 3: I got done with it that I felt like I
• 39:06
Speaker 3: was I was no different than any of them. Like
• 39:09
Speaker 3: I didn't see anybody like I thought Darryl Green was
• 39:11
Speaker 3: special and I think that's great. Yeah, but yeah I
• 39:18
Speaker 3: could see them and I can say, Okay, well, you
• 39:20
Speaker 3: know he's a little bit more of that. I got
• 39:21
Speaker 3: a little bit more of that o him, and you
• 39:23
Speaker 3: know you started. My first my first Pro Bowl, I
• 39:27
Speaker 3: was it was a kind of a let me see
• 39:30
Speaker 3: where I rank with all.
• 39:31
Speaker 5: Of what everybody thinks are the best players? What?
• 39:35
Speaker 3: What was what was your what was your thought when
• 39:38
Speaker 3: you first got there and you start looking around at
• 39:40
Speaker 3: the at the players.
• 39:41
  Speaker 8: I was.
• 39:47
Speaker 6: Because okay, I had been the first alternate seven times
• 39:51
Speaker 6: before not so and then see when you're the first
• 39:55
Speaker 6: altin that nobody gets hurt. You don't go. You'll get
• 39:58
Speaker 6: credit for it. That's why they changed that rule going
• 40:00
Speaker 6: into the Hall of Fame, because I was thinking about it,
• 40:04
Speaker 6: because I never because back in the day, you got
• 40:07
Speaker 6: to remember outside linebackers, there were four of us on
• 40:11
Speaker 6: the field, but outside linebackers that was the position that
• 40:15
Speaker 6: everybody was playing. So now you got the best athletes
• 40:20
Speaker 6: on the field of trying to do the best things
• 40:22
Speaker 6: for their team and in order to and when you're
• 40:25
Speaker 6: considered in that group, and then you look around and
• 40:31
Speaker 6: you see, okay, everybody else in this group is getting
• 40:34
  Speaker 6: this X and Y and Z, but you're still getting B.
• 40:38
Speaker 6: So now I'm having a fit because everybody else did.
• 40:42
Speaker 6: I'm in the group with it's getting everything else, and
• 40:47
Speaker 6: I'm still sitting back here, sick in class. I ain't
• 40:50
  Speaker 6: get a first class ticket. I'm a little upset. I'm
• 40:55
Speaker 6: a little upset because now, let's say this has been
• 40:58
  Speaker 6: ten years and I didn't get I didn't make all
• 41:01
Speaker 6: proing to what I mean, didn't make the problem to
• 41:04
Speaker 6: my eighth year in the league, seventh year in the league.
• 41:08
Speaker 6: M yod No, it was about my eighth.
• 41:11
Speaker 5: Yeah, I think I was up there like that too.
• 41:15
Speaker 6: So I'm like, wait a minute, bus w to beat it,
• 41:19
Speaker 6: and I was like, okay, but that's fine. As long
• 41:23
  Speaker 6: as I keep winning, I don't tear. And then I
• 41:25
Speaker 6: got to the point where as long as I won,
• 41:28
Speaker 6: I was content. I was content with beating everybody game
• 41:32
Speaker 6: by game, week by week. And because I went through
• 41:36
Speaker 6: the two and fourteens, the four and twelves, the six
• 41:39
Speaker 6: and eight in the two and fourteens because I went
• 41:42
Speaker 6: through that. When I got to the other side, oh boy,
• 41:46
Speaker 6: it wasn't no where in the world I was gonna
• 41:48
Speaker 6: go back. I'm sorry. From once I came, I will
• 41:51
Speaker 6: not go back. But here I am in life from
• 41:57
Speaker 6: whence I came. I went back. I went back in
• 41:59
Speaker 6: the same house I grew up in and please get that. No,
• 42:02
Speaker 6: I'm going out again.
• 42:05
Speaker 4: I want to get Darryl and Sterling sharp in person.
• 42:09
Speaker 7: On this show in the studio because your philosophies are yeah, yeah, yeah,
• 42:23
  Speaker 7: very well.
• 42:23
Speaker 4: Yes yes he uh.
• 42:27
Speaker 3: I had gone to this Hall of Fame induction, like
• 42:29
Speaker 3: he he had invited me to go, so rab what
• 42:32
Speaker 3: he does is like so I So after his induction,
• 42:36
Speaker 3: me and my son went and we came home and
• 42:40
Speaker 3: he calls me on Monday and says, bro, I'm gonna
• 42:42
Speaker 3: be on the show. Like he just callsed me, said
• 42:47
Speaker 3: he wants to be on the show. So he comes
• 42:49
Speaker 3: and he's in studio and man, he was, he he was.
• 42:54
Speaker 5: It was an amazing kind of a thing.
• 42:56
Speaker 3: We were the first show that he came on after
• 42:58
Speaker 3: him being him coming back home, going heading home, he
• 43:05
Speaker 3: stopped here to come on the show.
• 43:08
Speaker 5: And talk about his induction and the relevance of.
• 43:12
Speaker 4: Even had his jacket all.
• 43:13
Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, he even had a jacket.
• 43:15
Speaker 4: Jacket, which was pretty cool. He wouldn't let me wear.
• 43:17
Speaker 6: Daryl, No, no, no, no, no shoulders.
• 43:26
  Speaker 5: We don't. And I'm sorry.
• 43:30
Speaker 7: To get religious exactly.
• 43:34
Speaker 4: That would have been blasphemous. I get it.
• 43:35
Speaker 3: See, And I would have known not to ask, because
• 43:39
  Speaker 3: if I didn't earn one, I know, I can't wear
• 43:41
  Speaker 3: one like me.
• 43:44
Speaker 7: You like cold, said it was cold in the studio.
• 43:51
Speaker 6: Come on there, I was standing there. I was standing
• 43:55
Speaker 6: there and shut it in my chatter nothing at all.
• 44:01
  Speaker 5: I ain't you're right, You're right at least have you
• 44:05
  Speaker 5: got something?
• 44:06
Speaker 4: Oh well, I was just going to ask. I know.
• 44:08
Speaker 7: In the intro, Daryl, we talked about you being in
• 44:10
Speaker 7: the four Super Bowls with the Bills.
• 44:12
Speaker 4: What was it like playing in that era? In four
• 44:14
  Speaker 4: Super Bowls?
• 44:17
Speaker 6: God, the most exciting thing that happened to me in
• 44:21
Speaker 6: my entirety, other than my kids being born. That's it.
• 44:27
Speaker 6: That was it. I mean, you got to think about it.
• 44:30
Speaker 6: I'm out playing a freaking football game. Everybody in the
• 44:35
Speaker 6: world is watching everybody because the world is at war.
• 44:41
Speaker 6: Right where at War. They got black Hawk helicopters up
• 44:45
Speaker 6: on the top of the scoreboard, on the top of
• 44:47
Speaker 6: the stadiums. Whitney, you se sis the national anthem?
• 44:51
  Speaker 4: Nice?
• 44:51
Speaker 6: I mean, you tell me, what else where else would
• 44:55
Speaker 6: you rather be than right here, right now? And trust me,
• 45:01
Speaker 6: Martin's never spoke true words.
• 45:05
  Speaker 5: I can't even I can't.
• 45:07
  Speaker 6: I don't know. I don't even know. I mean, to
• 45:12
Speaker 6: be honest with you, it was almost like I was
• 45:16
Speaker 6: floating because here's the thing. I looked around. I've seen helicopters,
• 45:21
Speaker 6: I've seen people with guns and the ladies things in
• 45:25
Speaker 6: national anthem. And I get to go play football against
• 45:28
  Speaker 6: my former teammates.
• 45:30
  Speaker 4: Wow, I'm playing.
• 45:33
Speaker 6: To get Jeff Hart Styler and my Fox in a
• 45:36
  Speaker 6: super Bowl.
• 45:36
  Speaker 4: That's crazy.
• 45:38
Speaker 6: That's crazy. You got three kids from West Virginia playing
• 45:41
Speaker 6: the marandamn game. Think about that. How ironic is that?
• 45:46
Speaker 6: And they talk about we didn't have any talent in
• 45:48
  Speaker 6: West Virginia.
• 45:51
Speaker 5: That has not been a story. That should that, I
• 45:54
Speaker 5: mean that should be a story.
• 45:56
Speaker 6: Yeah, But forget that they say that there's no talent there.
• 46:02
Speaker 6: We're still in the Super Bowl, right, Wow, three kids
• 46:06
Speaker 6: from the same damn school. Mm hmm.
• 46:09
Speaker 4: Yeah, that that's that that needs to be That story
• 46:12
Speaker 4: needs to be told. It needs to be told.
• 46:14
Speaker 3: And you know, and I'll add that just to throw
• 46:16
Speaker 3: Marshall into the into the mix, you know, just not
• 46:19
Speaker 3: just yeah, I just don't want it to be all
• 46:21
Speaker 3: wv U. Marshall has had some very very notable successful players.
• 46:32
  Speaker 5: In the NFL.
• 46:33
Speaker 3: Yes, Hall of Famers all of that, and yes, where is.
• 46:40
Speaker 5: Where is the celebration for where is?
• 46:46
Speaker 6: Here is none mine. We're all world. We don't need that,
• 46:52
Speaker 6: we don't need that validation. We were We were our
• 46:56
Speaker 6: own validation once we got there. That's just we were.
• 47:01
Speaker 6: We were that little kid did they didn't have to
• 47:04
Speaker 6: have it, didn't have his mommy walk in the street
• 47:06
Speaker 6: to walk him to school every day because he was
• 47:08
Speaker 6: gonna get beat up. We walked to school by ourself.
• 47:12
Speaker 6: We're our brothers and our sisters.
• 47:14
  Speaker 5: Ye, that's me.
• 47:15
Speaker 6: So that's all today. We're we're that, We're that odd kid.
• 47:21
Speaker 6: We're that kid did nobody but again, anybody wants but
• 47:26
Speaker 6: nobody wanted to trust, nobody wanted to fight with.
• 47:28
Speaker 5: But again, but again, though Darryl, like.
• 47:32
Speaker 3: You build that individual confidence up, you have that strong
• 47:37
Speaker 3: belief in yourself. No matter what anybody else is gonna
• 47:41
Speaker 3: say or do, You're gonna have to.
• 47:42
Speaker 5: You're gonna have to. You're gonna have to make me.
• 47:45
Speaker 3: You're gonna have to do something to make me think
• 47:47
Speaker 3: that I'm not what I think I am.
• 47:50
Speaker 6: That's it. My dad always used to tell me, son,
• 47:52
Speaker 6: you can do anything you want to. You put your
• 47:54
Speaker 6: mind to it. That you can't do. He said, Hey,
• 47:59
Speaker 6: you think you want to do it, go do it.
• 48:02
Speaker 6: I'm gonna sit here and watch you go do it.
• 48:05
Speaker 6: We'll sit here. Rabi.
• 48:06
Speaker 4: You got Yeah, you had a good daddy.
• 48:09
Speaker 6: And yeah, I did. I had a damn good one.
• 48:12
Speaker 5: Yes, And and and I talked about my dad, you know.
• 48:15
  Speaker 5: And and.
• 48:17
Speaker 3: My dad missed one game from youth football to marshall
• 48:24
Speaker 3: of my games no matter what I was, you know.
• 48:27
Speaker 3: And and we and we had to have conversation about
• 48:30
Speaker 3: the game the next morning. You know, he'd sit down
• 48:33
Speaker 3: and tell me about not the good place, just the
• 48:35
Speaker 3: bad place. When you have that kind of thing, you
• 48:38
Speaker 3: might hate it in the moment, but it's but it
• 48:42
  Speaker 3: is special.
• 48:44
  Speaker 5: It's so valuable.
• 48:46
Speaker 7: Yeah, speaking of family, I'm speaking of family, Daryl. I'm
• 48:53
Speaker 7: going to bring this up and if I'm wrong, just
• 48:56
Speaker 7: just go along with it, Just pretend it's true, Okay, Okay, no, So,
• 49:01
Speaker 7: so I don't know if people know that you are
• 49:03
Speaker 7: the cousin of former New York Yankee Derek Jeter and
• 49:07
Speaker 7: your brother is John Tally and he also played for
• 49:09
Speaker 7: the Mountaineers and professionally with the Browns. What's it like
• 49:13
Speaker 7: coming from such like a an athletically talented family, like
• 49:17
Speaker 7: I bet the reunions are awesome.
• 49:18
Speaker 4: You guys have all these people kind.
• 49:20
  Speaker 6: Of I ain't have the monkey's up undern't said Tree?
• 49:31
Speaker 7: Yeah, so I'm sure you you you come in close
• 49:34
Speaker 7: contact with Derek, are you guys closer?
• 49:36
  Speaker 9: No?
• 49:36
Speaker 6: No, no, no, no, he's born from a he comes
• 49:39
Speaker 6: from a different althlete my dad's side of the family. Okay,
• 49:44
Speaker 6: he's the Jeter part. My grandmother's side. Uh. They actually
• 49:48
Speaker 6: moved from Union, South Carolina out west, Okay, because that's
• 49:52
Speaker 6: what my dad's originally from Union, South Carolina, and he
• 49:56
Speaker 6: came to Cleveland, and they moved from Cleveland. He's staged
• 50:00
Speaker 6: things when everybody else went west. Okay, where is mom?
• 50:05
Speaker 6: And my grandmother stayed here because they were living in Youngstown.
• 50:09
Speaker 4: Mm hmm. And You and John are place obviously, right,
• 50:12
  Speaker 4: You and John?
• 50:13
Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, the one he's always been my brother. I
• 50:16
Speaker 6: don't think he's changed one bit. The only thing he's
• 50:19
Speaker 6: the only thing he's done is gotten a little bit
• 50:20
Speaker 6: bigger and a little fatter.
• 50:23
Speaker 4: Happens to all of us, That.
• 50:27
Speaker 6: Happen all of us.
• 50:30
Speaker 5: We don't have it all. You don't have to happen
• 50:32
  Speaker 5: all of it.
• 50:32
Speaker 6: Okay, okay, because it ain't happening to me.
• 50:36
  Speaker 5: That's good.
• 50:39
Speaker 6: You know the one that's gonna tell you know, you
• 50:41
Speaker 6: don't happen all of us because I ain't including all.
• 50:46
  Speaker 4: Oh my gosh.
• 50:47
Speaker 5: All right, so we're we're we're almost out of time.
• 50:50
Speaker 3: But I want to ask this question, just just because
• 50:54
Speaker 3: it just popped into my head. Who was the most
• 50:57
Speaker 3: impactful coach to to provide you with the skill set
• 51:08
Speaker 3: and the success that you had individually as a player.
• 51:11
Speaker 5: Who would you be? Who would be the coach that
• 51:13
Speaker 5: you would give the most credit to?
• 51:15
Speaker 6: And why m I would have to be me wrestling
• 51:25
Speaker 6: through back to two people, Okay, Very Tranquil who Bob Stemmens,
• 51:35
Speaker 6: Gary Tranquil, who was my defensive coordinator one to call me?
• 51:40
Speaker 6: Why hm hmm? Him and Bob Simmons, who also went
• 51:45
Speaker 6: to my high school and set all records there that
• 51:49
Speaker 6: I broke. And then I came to he was coaching
• 51:52
Speaker 6: at Toledo and I was at West Virginia and coach
• 51:55
Speaker 6: nieland and coached me before brought him in because he
• 51:58
Speaker 6: played for Coachneeland. He and Phil veel Piano at Bowling
• 52:01
Speaker 6: Green as outside linebackers, and he came to West Virginia
• 52:05
Speaker 6: as the outside linebackers coach. And where I really honed
• 52:10
Speaker 6: my skill was between Gary Trenquel and Bob State Bob Simmons.
• 52:16
Speaker 6: Those are the two guys that were responsible for honing
• 52:19
Speaker 6: my craft. The one that was responsible for phoning me mentally,
• 52:27
Speaker 6: this is the one that check was Walk Corey. He
• 52:31
Speaker 6: was a former linebacker that played for the Kansas City Chiefs.
• 52:35
Speaker 6: He was my defensive coordinator in Buffalo after I gotten
• 52:40
Speaker 6: rid of three other defensive coordinators before Walk hooned in
• 52:45
Speaker 6: and the way Walk spoke and talked to you. And
• 52:50
Speaker 6: then the funny part is I became friendly with Willy
• 52:53
Speaker 6: Lanier from played with Willy. Walk Corey was the outside
• 52:59
Speaker 6: linebacker on the team that lost his job to Buck
• 53:02
Speaker 6: Buchanon when Buck Buchanty came to the Kansas City Chiefs,
• 53:06
Speaker 6: and everybody knows what the rest of that is. That
• 53:08
Speaker 6: one went like, so Walk bought me a live and
• 53:15
Speaker 6: he would sit there and joke with Cornelius and I
• 53:19
Speaker 6: about different things in different ways that get things done,
• 53:22
Speaker 6: and tell us, well, that guy Eric get can't do it.
• 53:25
Speaker 6: We need to get a guy. We need to get
• 53:27
Speaker 6: our number fifty six to be able to do with
• 53:28
Speaker 6: their number fifty six dollars. We need to get our
• 53:31
Speaker 6: number ninety seven to do with their number sixty six?
• 53:33
Speaker 6: Does we need? So Walk he motivated Cornelius and II,
• 53:40
Speaker 6: and then he gave us the ability to change what
• 53:44
Speaker 6: we were doing on the fly. So let's say, like,
• 53:49
Speaker 6: if you're playing a defense and they motion one guy
• 53:53
Speaker 6: one way, they mostly in or out. You could change
• 53:57
Speaker 6: the defense or stay in the same thing. It's up
• 54:00
Speaker 6: to you. You make the decision on the field whether
• 54:04
Speaker 6: you want to play that or play something different. Now
• 54:07
Speaker 6: how many coaches give you a decision choose? And then
• 54:15
Speaker 6: he had four linebackers that we could really interchange me
• 54:20
Speaker 6: or it is shame and Ray Bentley and Scott Radisson.
• 54:23
Speaker 6: I mean, he just moved us around and we were
• 54:26
Speaker 6: just like little and Meba just going all over the
• 54:28
Speaker 6: place and really enjoyed playing for him. Because here's the thing,
• 54:35
Speaker 6: he's a linebacker. He has the same mindset you have.
• 54:38
Speaker 6: Think about that. Think about that when you got a linebacker,
• 54:43
Speaker 6: a guy that's played the position as your coach, and
• 54:48
Speaker 6: he sees what you see on the field, and you
• 54:50
Speaker 6: come off the field and you say, well, but what
• 54:52
Speaker 6: about what we just ad He said, no, but you
• 54:54
Speaker 6: got to do is get him there and he had
• 54:56
Speaker 6: the answers right there right away. And that's what thought.
• 55:01
Speaker 6: That's what he taught me. He taught me how to
• 55:03
Speaker 6: be able to coach and make changes on the move
• 55:07
Speaker 6: and be good and know what you're doing.
• 55:09
  Speaker 4: That was awesome.
• 55:11
Speaker 7: So so Darryl, like Carl said, we're about to run
• 55:14
Speaker 7: out of time, but tell us what you're doing now
• 55:16
Speaker 7: now you know these days, anything in particular that you
• 55:19
Speaker 7: want to talk about that you're doing.
• 55:22
Speaker 6: Not yet, I don't want to couch.
• 55:25
  Speaker 5: I don't.
• 55:27
  Speaker 3: Do it.
• 55:28
  Speaker 6: Do it.
• 55:29
Speaker 3: And and and I'll end with with to your point
• 55:32
Speaker 3: about that coach that that impacts your career. Pete Carroll,
• 55:38
Speaker 3: the interesting thing about him was, I'm I'm almost one
• 55:43
Speaker 3: hundred percent. Sure he's never played defensive back. He definitely
• 55:46
Speaker 3: has probably never played corner.
• 55:48
Speaker 6: No but pizza hippies.
• 55:49
Speaker 5: But but yeah, he really is. And and and then he.
• 55:59
Speaker 3: Used to tell us like all he wanted us to
• 56:03
Speaker 3: do was to make plays. His whole thing was, Look,
• 56:06
Speaker 3: you're gonna get beat. You're gonna get beat deep, that's
• 56:08
Speaker 3: gonna happen. Yep, somebody's gonna catch the ball on you.
• 56:12
  Speaker 5: That's that.
• 56:13
Speaker 3: That's gonna happen with everybody that you play with. But
• 56:18
Speaker 3: what I need you to do and how you become
• 56:20
Speaker 3: great is to make plays. And I had never no
• 56:24
Speaker 3: one had ever freed me up to say, like, all
• 56:27
Speaker 3: they want me to do is just make place. They're
• 56:29
Speaker 3: not gonna yell at me because somebody beats me for
• 56:31
Speaker 3: a touchdown. You you got Andre Reid out there, Like
• 56:34
Speaker 3: how you gonna stop him all day?
• 56:36
Speaker 5: It's just not gonna happen.
• 56:37
Speaker 3: You got sterling sharp, You're not gonna keep him from
• 56:39
  Speaker 3: catching the ball.
• 56:41
  Speaker 6: That's just like I told him. I said, that's just
• 56:43
Speaker 6: like telling wil Chamberlain he can't make fifteen points in
• 56:46
Speaker 6: a minute. Oh you know, yeah, you had to get
• 56:53
Speaker 6: over that. Yeah, that's what God that. That's what. It
• 56:56
Speaker 6: took me a while to understand that the DVS what through.
• 57:00
Speaker 6: It was like, wait, man, man, see, I was just
• 57:03
Speaker 6: I was just eating. I just wanted to beat the
• 57:05
Speaker 6: guy up. All you did was make me want to
• 57:08
Speaker 6: beat you. And that, yeah, I had myself and if
• 57:16
Speaker 6: I couldn't catch you, I'd run you over the corneas
• 57:20
Speaker 6: I knew we could catch you. Oh my gosh, we
• 57:24
Speaker 6: we were. We were not nice to be. We would
• 57:29
Speaker 6: we run you. We not you. We let you think
• 57:33
  Speaker 6: you're getting away.
• 57:36
  Speaker 3: I experienced that. I can attest that. I w that
• 57:41
Speaker 3: from the sideline, and I thought y'all was dirty. Just
• 57:45
Speaker 3: in case you no, no, no no, the the show.
• 57:54
Speaker 6: The truth from the policeman police car. It was the
• 58:01
Speaker 6: first time something went wrong, somebody did something stupid. One
• 58:03
Speaker 6: of my guys, yeah, told him about it. That's like
• 58:06
Speaker 6: we had a game, the Houston oiler game. We had
• 58:11
Speaker 6: Steinfleld and them. We're just grabbing Bruce and Freddy by
• 58:13
Speaker 6: the face mask. Uh. I came from sixty sixty yards away.
• 58:20
Speaker 6: I told him to stop. They didn't stop. Right from
• 58:24
Speaker 6: sixty yards away, I'm covering the running back going down.
• 58:28
Speaker 6: In the end, Zoe I come sprinting full speed down
• 58:31
Speaker 6: the middle of the hash. Everybody's looking at me running.
• 58:35
Speaker 6: I get the things thankful and I get to wearing
• 58:37
Speaker 6: his gut out coming from sixty yards away. Oh wow,
• 58:45
Speaker 6: I told him, don't do that any that. They cut.
• 58:48
Speaker 6: They cut. They cut Bruce in the grabb him about
• 58:51
Speaker 6: the face mask, and it had Freddy by the face
• 58:53
Speaker 6: mask swinging him around. I told him, oh no, And
• 58:56
Speaker 6: Marv made his famous saying they lost Martin Park Kettle,
• 59:00
Speaker 6: we lost miss the Universe in miss USA because they
• 59:03
Speaker 6: kicked both Bruce missing me out of the gay for fighting.
• 59:06
Speaker 6: Oh oh yeah, I ran from sixty yards. If I
• 59:10
Speaker 6: told you gonna do that, they're gonna do something I
• 59:13
Speaker 6: can't from sixty yards. It ain't seen me running on film.
• 59:16
Speaker 3: Yeah, that's that that that can't get any It was
• 59:21
Speaker 3: like Forrest, go yeah, getting down there, get get your
• 59:26
  Speaker 3: Darryl run.
• 59:28
Speaker 6: So yeah, they looked at me like, yeah, we know
• 59:30
Speaker 6: this was this was right here. It's just build a
• 59:33
Speaker 6: little different. And I told things cycling them not to
• 59:37
Speaker 6: do it, and they did it anyway, and.
• 59:40
Speaker 4: They paid the price.
• 59:42
Speaker 5: Yep, that's right. Well, my brother, the game.
• 59:47
Speaker 3: I'm sure that that that wasn't wasn't the only one
• 59:49
Speaker 3: that you got kicked out up, I didn't like.
• 59:53
Speaker 6: Getting kicked out. That was the only one I got
• 59:55
  Speaker 6: kicked on it.
• 59:56
Speaker 5: Oh really, I'm shocked.
• 1:00:00
Speaker 6: I will shut it down from get I'm too valuable
• 1:00:05
Speaker 6: to do that. That's one thing my coaches told me.
• 1:00:08
Speaker 6: Too valuable to me to get kicked out of the game.
• 1:00:11
Speaker 6: You can go up to that line, but you bet
• 1:00:14
Speaker 6: not crossing. I'm not a little kid to get up
• 1:00:19
Speaker 6: to the line touch it. And I'm gonna say.
• 1:00:22
Speaker 3: I can see you are already like just reaching over
• 1:00:25
Speaker 3: the line and jumping back and like, no, I didn't
• 1:00:27
  Speaker 3: really cross it.
• 1:00:28
Speaker 5: I came back really quick. I can see.
• 1:00:33
  Speaker 6: Me.
• 1:00:34
Speaker 5: Well, my brother, I do appreciate you coming.
