Latest / Elon Musk Podcast / Elon Musk is Officially in Charge of Twitter
Transcript
- 0:03The SpaceX and Tesla CEO. Elon Musk is now actually in
- 0:08charge of Twitter, according to cnbc's, David Faber.
- 0:12Now, Twitter CEO. I should say, former CEO parag
- 0:16and the Chief Financial Officer, Ned Segal have left the company
- 0:20San Francisco headquarters and they will not be returning.
- 0:24They're done with the company and musk had until Friday to
- 0:28complete. His forty four billion dollar
- 0:30acquisition of Twitter or he would face ache.
- 0:32Crazy Court battle with a company.
- 0:35Now, in April Twitter accepted musk's proposal to buy the
- 0:39social media Giant and take it private.
- 0:43Now a couple months later and must began to show that the
- 0:48intentions from Twitter, we're not exactly what he thought they
- 0:51were. He thought there were a bunch of
- 0:53bots on the program, a lot of bots on the app and he wasn't
- 0:57really going for it, right? So he had a sort of a second
- 1:00thought about this. He said, okay, We have a lot of
- 1:03bots on the app, I know that everybody knows that.
- 1:06Twitter said there's about five percent Bots.
- 1:09There were some estimates of about 90%, which is kind of
- 1:12crazy. But somewhere in between there
- 1:16are good people. There are people that are using
- 1:19the platform and musk saw that and he said, you know what, I'm
- 1:23gonna buy this company anyway. I'm not going to go to court
- 1:25about it. I'm going to spend my forty four
- 1:27billion dollars on this company and his intentions to buy
- 1:31Twitter and he alleged that the company failed to disclose all
- 1:36of those fake accounts on the service.
- 1:38And now when musk said that he was going to terminate this
- 1:41deal, Twitter suit him and they said the musk refuses to honor
- 1:45his obligations to Twitter and its stockholders because the
- 1:48deal had no longer that it no longer service his personal
- 1:53interests. So they said, hey Ilan, we got
- 1:57to do this. You said that you're going to do
- 1:59this and you have no proof. Otherwise of our Intentions are
- 2:03these fake accounts as 5% were 98 percent or whatever?
- 2:06Whatever it is is somewhere in between Ilan said, okay, let's
- 2:10try this. So in the months in between
- 2:13their Twitter and musk went back and forth, Twitter would throw
- 2:18up some shade, Ilan would show up, throw up some shade, there's
- 2:22some attorneys, both parties were sledded slated to head to
- 2:25where is Court of Chancery to determine the fate of the social
- 2:30media platform. So if it's Owing to get an
- 2:33elon's hands, or if it's going to stay in the public realm and
- 2:37be traded on a stock market. So, October Ilan said, you know
- 2:43what? Let's do this.
- 2:46Let's acquire Twitter at the original asking, price of fifty,
- 2:50four dollars and twenty cents 5420 nice.
- 2:57And he said that, when he buys this company, he's going to drop
- 3:02all the litigation. Gation everything's going to be
- 3:05great. It's gonna go private.
- 3:07So Twitter is lawyers though said that elon's proposal is an
- 3:12invitation to further mischief and DeLay.
- 3:15So they didn't trust him, they think he's kind of mischievous,
- 3:18right? They think he's kind of in it
- 3:20for himself, he's doing his own thing and a Delaware Chancery
- 3:23Court Judge ruled that musk head until October 28th to get the
- 3:28deal done. Or it's going to have the trial.
- 3:33So Thursday, Ilan Road and message intended to reassure
- 3:37advertisers that the social media messaging services won't
- 3:41devolve into a free-for-all hellscape where anything can be
- 3:46said with no consequences and there's a Twitter post about
- 3:49this from Elon and it's it's pretty it's pretty dicey, it's
- 3:55pretty awesome. I think there's a there's a
- 3:58there's a chance that he's in good Good spirits and that he's
- 4:01doing this kind of cover all of his bases, so they don't lose
- 4:04Revenue, right up front. So kind of what happened to
- 4:07Tumblr. I don't know if you remember
- 4:08Tumblr or how big it was before, but when they were required, a
- 4:13lot of advertisers left, a lot of people just abandon the
- 4:16platform because it wasn't as cool as it used to be.
- 4:20And the new owners didn't do exactly what they wanted to do.
- 4:22And they took a private and it was just it was a fiasco, Ilan
- 4:26sent this crazy train. I'm going to I'm going to read
- 4:29you some of this tweet. I wanted to reach out
- 4:31personally. This is from elon's tweet, I
- 4:33wanted to reach out personally to share my motivation.
- 4:35In acquiring Twitter, there has been much speculation about why
- 4:39I bought Twitter in what I think about advertising most of it has
- 4:43been wrong. The reason I acquired Twitter is
- 4:46because it is important to the future of civilization to have a
- 4:49common digital Town Square where a wide range of beliefs can be
- 4:53debated in a healthy manner, without resorting to violence.
- 4:57There was a current greater danger that social media.
- 5:00'He will Splinter into far right wing or far left wing Echo
- 5:03chambers, that generate more hate and divide, our society, in
- 5:08the Relentless pursuit of clicks, much of traditional
- 5:10media is fueled and cater to those polarize extremes is they
- 5:14believe that is what brings in the money.
- 5:18But in doing, so the opportunity for dialogue is lost, this is
- 5:23why I bought Twitter, I didn't do it because it would be easy.
- 5:26I didn't do it to make more money.
- 5:28I did it to try to help Humanity.
- 5:30Whom I love and I do so with humility, recognizing the
- 5:34failures pursuing this goal. Despite our best efforts is a
- 5:38very real possibility. That said Twitter obviously
- 5:42cannot become a free-for-all hellscape where anything can be
- 5:46said with no consequences in addition to adhering to the laws
- 5:50of the land are platform, must be warm and welcoming to all
- 5:54where you can choose your desired experience.
- 5:55According to your preferences, just as you can choose, for
- 5:58example to see movies or play video games, ranging from all
- 6:02ages to mature. I also very much believe that
- 6:07advertising, when done right Candlelight entertain in, Inform
- 6:11you. They can show you a service or
- 6:12product or medical treatment that you never knew existed, but
- 6:16is right for you for this to be true, it is essential to show
- 6:20Twitter, users advertising, that is as relevant as possible to
- 6:24their needs low relevancy. Lee ads are spam.
- 6:29But highly relevant ads are actual content fundamentally
- 6:33Twitter aspires to be the most respected advertising platform
- 6:37in the world. This strengthens your brand and
- 6:39grows your As to everyone who has partnered with us.

- 8:48easy to use. So go to back.
- 8:49Plays.com / heel on back plays.com Ilan backblaze.com,
- 8:56Ilan. So the few takeaways from this.
- 9:01Okay, so I'm going to go after the big one here.
- 9:05The big one is the ad platform. So currently if you advertise on
- 9:10Twitter, you can boil down the results of your ad very, very my
- 9:16new. So say, if you're looking for
- 9:18somebody, in Upstate New York, who likes ice cream that
- 9:24skateboards and is also a dancer, you can find that person
- 9:32if you nail down, the right trajectory Hooray for your
- 9:34advertisement, right? So Elon says it's not going to
- 9:38become a hellscape where anything can be said with no
- 9:41consequences. So basically people thought this
- 9:43was going to turn into 4chan and 4chan is basically that the Wild
- 9:47Wild West, you can do anything you want on 4chan, basically and
- 9:50no one's going to say anything to you.
- 9:52Everyone's going to be like, alright, cool, do you thing?
- 9:54But this company needs to make money.
- 9:57This company needs to make a lot of for of money.
- 10:01Elon's money isn't just elon's money.
- 10:03He hasn't Investors in this idea.
- 10:06So these there's private Equity firms.
- 10:09There's other billionaires involved.
- 10:10It's not just ilan's money. Did just cash in a bunch of
- 10:13Tesla stock and buy Twitter. So Ilan says, in addition to
- 10:18adhering, to the laws of the land.
- 10:20So, I'm guessing he's saying Free Speech here.
- 10:22Our platform must be warm and welcoming to all, so he's
- 10:25saying, all right, let's have everybody's ideas here.
- 10:29Let's open this up to everybody. It might be unbanning some
- 10:33people. You know, some prominent figures
- 10:36prominent political figures, possibly where you can choose
- 10:39your desired experience. According to your preferences,
- 10:42just as you can choose, for example to see movies or play
- 10:45video games, ranging from all ages to mature.
- 10:49Okay, so Your desired experience.
- 10:54What does this mean? It's possible that Elon is
- 10:57saying, okay, so say if you like, if you're into
- 11:00skateboarding, I'm into skateboarding.
- 11:02I like skateboarding. I think it's great.
- 11:03I used to be a skateboarder, in my, in my younger years.
- 11:07I still like it. I watch it.
- 11:08I think it's cool. It would be cool if there was
- 11:11sort of like a skateboard Twitter, you know, if there were
- 11:14sort of verticals for everything and also spaceflight, I'm into
- 11:17space flight, what if there were a vertical for politics, but
- 11:22Just regular, like, all over the board politics, but say, if you
- 11:25like politics, about Kentucky, Kentucky politics.
- 11:30Possibly, you'll be able to drill down into Kentucky,
- 11:32politics and only follow certain topics like that right now.
- 11:37There's, there's things like that on Twitter, but I think
- 11:39there's going to be a more fleshed-out program than what's
- 11:41there now. And this is important here to
- 11:46see movies or play video games ranging from all ages to mature.
- 11:50So currently Twitter is a, it's a mature platform as well.
- 11:55People post mature content on there and Elon says this isn't
- 12:00going away. So there was a comment from
- 12:03somebody called zubi music on Twitter.
- 12:07Twitter in zubi music says, yes also Twitter should find a way
- 12:10to compensate monetization partner.
- 12:13With this top creators like every other social media app, a
- 12:16small percent great, all the high engagement content and keep
- 12:19the site. Active Ilan replied with.
- 12:22Absolutely. So, Alana saying yes, that's
- 12:27what I want. I want everybody to get paid for
- 12:32their hard work because it is hard work.
- 12:33Doing all the Social Media stuff and takes a lot of time, you
- 12:37know. So by the time you create some
- 12:40content, say if I were to create a One update on a Tesla vehicle,
- 12:45right? Possibly, that might take me an
- 12:48hour. You know, it what is my, our
- 12:50worth is it worth 100 new followers, which doesn't really
- 12:55get me any money off the bat? You know, I do those followers
- 12:58don't do anything or is there a way for people to send me money
- 13:01or to my Channel or something like that?
- 13:04Something like YouTube, you know, the monetization of
- 13:06YouTube, that's why people use YouTube a lot.
- 13:08That's why people are moving from Tick-Tock to YouTube
- 13:11because YouTube just created short.
- 13:13It's and there's going to be monetization of shorts, which
- 13:16are 60 seconds or less, sort of like Tick-Tock some creators are
- 13:21moving from Tick-Tock where they don't make money, but they have
- 13:23a ton of followers. But YouTube is saying, hey, come
- 13:27over here, we have advertising over here, we'll pay you.
- 13:30So maybe this is a thing with Twitter as well.
- 13:32I don't know how successful the short program is going to be,
- 13:35but there's a lot of hype about it.
- 13:37So this is kind of what I'm guessing.
- 13:38An Elan also said every Rising when done right Candlelight.
- 13:42Entertained and informed, Mm, you.
- 13:43They can show you a service or here's a big kicker, right here,
- 13:46or medical treatment. So most of the advertisers
- 13:50online and most the advertisers on television are medical
- 13:56advertisers. If you watch any TV show, you'll
- 13:59see that most of the stuff that you will see how our ties mitts
- 14:03on there. There in some form.
- 14:06There's some sort of medicine involved, whether it's, you
- 14:09know, something like a Band-Aid, or you, you fix a cut real
- 14:12quick. Or something, where you have to
- 14:14go, talk to your physician about it, that's in the United States.
- 14:18But he also said once advertising that it's relevant,
- 14:22and as possible to their needs low relevancy ads are spam by
- 14:26highly relevant ads are actually content.
- 14:29So is it going to be a new ad platform for Twitter?
- 14:33How can we make ads more relevant and more content based
- 14:38as opposed to just being an advertisement where it's just a
- 14:42picture or a video? Video real quick, then like a
- 14:44five-second video, is there a way to advertise on Twitter?
- 14:48That's sort of a bigger idea, you know?
- 14:51So I think it's going to be working on that too.
- 14:55And he says fundamentally Twitter aspires to be the most
- 14:57respected advertising platform in the world, the strengthens
- 15:00your brand and grows your Enterprise to everyone who has
- 15:02partnered with us. Thank you.
- 15:04So basically says okay, this isn't just a social media
- 15:08platform Let's make some money here everybody.
- 15:12Let's make a bunch of money. And in order to make that money,
- 15:15we need to keep these advertisers happy.
- 15:17So that's what he's doing with these tweets Elon is now in
- 15:21charge of Twitter. Officially you know he said I'm
- 15:27going to do this by Friday and he did, he walked into, he
- 15:30walked into Twitter headquarters with a sink like a bathroom
- 15:34sink. And he said on his Twitter
- 15:37account entering Twitter, HQ, let that sink in.
- 15:44So, of course, he's going to be funny, he's going to be goofy.
- 15:47He's going to be Lon. And he also upgraded, his
- 15:50Twitter description to Chief twit.
- 15:56So elon's in charge of Twitter. Now, I hope you enjoyed this.
- 16:00I hope you have a great conversation here.
- 16:02Please hit the Subscribe button. Please listen to this.
- 16:05And share this with all your friends.
- 16:07I really do appreciate all of your time here.
- 16:09And of course, as always, I'll see you next time.
