- 2:07Speaker 3: This year, we're going to talk to him about several
- 2:08Speaker 3: things they have going on during the holiday season, including tomorrow.
- 2:13Speaker 3: It is it's a big event. It's gone on for
- 2:16Speaker 3: years in Charleston, talking about the drumstick run that they
- 2:20Speaker 3: do tomorrow. So we'll talk to Jasonontwella about that a
- 2:23Speaker 3: little bit later night. Let's get some things in the news.
- 2:25Speaker 3: I want to get to Plenty. As a matter of fact,

- 2:37Speaker 3: But first, Small Business Saturday is this Saturday. It's a
- 2:41Speaker 3: day dedicated to patronizing the small businesses that make America great.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Get several to choose from several here in Thekanaal Valley.
- 2:48Speaker 3: You know, Downtown Charleston is plenty, as do South Charleston,
- 2:51Speaker 3: Dunbark and Austiny, Saint Albans, Nitro. You get the point.
- 2:55Speaker 3: And one city that really and has for some time,
- 2:57Speaker 3: embraces the whole small Business Saturday thing it's the city
- 3:00Speaker 3: of Hurricane. Mayor Scott Edwards joins us. Now, Mayor, good morning,
- 3:03Speaker 3: welcome to the show.
- 3:05Speaker 5: Good morning to you. How are you doing today?
- 3:07Speaker 3: I'm doing fine. And as I have done, Mayor, with
- 3:10Speaker 3: every guest that I've had on the show, regardless of
- 3:12Speaker 3: their background or whatever, over the last week or so,
- 3:15Speaker 3: I have to ask you the same question I've asked
- 3:17Speaker 3: everyone else. Your favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal? Now together,
- 3:23Speaker 3: this is all good. I'm talking about food. With your
- 3:25Speaker 3: your favorite part.
- 3:27Speaker 5: It's deviled eggs, without question.
- 3:29Speaker 3: That's the I think that's the second deviled eggs I've had.
- 3:34Speaker 6: The devil well, without question, there is there is nothing
- 3:37Speaker 6: better than deviled eggs.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Life makes Yeah, So what what does it makes them
- 3:41Speaker 3: so special? If you don't mind my asking, and what
- 3:43Speaker 3: time should.
- 3:43Speaker 5: I be there tomorrow, you can get well, we're eating
- 3:46Speaker 5: it too, so come on over.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Okay, all right?
- 3:48Speaker 5: So what makes me look good? I don't know. I
- 3:51Speaker 5: don't know what makes them special? They're so good, you know.
- 3:53Speaker 6: I get them a couple of times a year and
- 3:55Speaker 6: that's it. But really Thanksgiving, I eat a lot of
- 3:57Speaker 6: deviled eggs. I ate a tremendous amount.
- 3:59Speaker 5: I love them.
- 4:00Speaker 3: I made a common mayor on the earlier this week,
- 4:03Speaker 3: my wife makes saracha deviled eggs and I don't want that,
- 4:07Speaker 3: I do. I want all the spice you can give me,
- 4:09Speaker 3: all right, So all right, So you know I've lived
- 4:12Speaker 3: mayor in a Hurricane area for ten years now, and
- 4:14Speaker 3: every year my wife and I go downtown Hurricane for
- 4:17Speaker 3: small Business Saturday. You got lots of locally owned shops
- 4:22Speaker 3: that down there in Hurricane. It's kind of become our
- 4:25Speaker 3: tradition on that Saturday. You guys and Hurricane really have
- 4:27Speaker 3: embraced this thing pretty much from day one.
- 4:30Speaker 6: Yeah, well, you know, we love we love the downtown area,
- 4:33Speaker 6: and we love all of our small businesses and Dave
- 4:36Speaker 6: as you know, we you know, we promote our small
- 4:38Speaker 6: businesses year around. We want people to shop local shops
- 4:41Speaker 6: small all the time, but.
- 4:43Speaker 5: Especially this Saturday. The Saturday is huge.
- 4:47Speaker 6: It can get them over the hump. It can really
- 4:49Speaker 6: help them have a good year. But and you know,
- 4:54Speaker 6: you know, and I see, like you know, baseball teams
- 4:57Speaker 6: and other other teams, they go into these all businesses
- 5:00Speaker 6: and ask for donations. And I always tell those folks
- 5:03Speaker 6: make sure you shop there too, and don't just ask
- 5:06Speaker 6: them because they always give. All of our local small
- 5:09Speaker 6: businesses are so giving. They'll help others, but we all
- 5:12Speaker 6: need to make sure we shop there so they can
- 5:14Speaker 6: keep helping. It's a it's circular. They they keep giving back,
- 5:19Speaker 6: and we all need to go there and shop and
- 5:21Speaker 6: keep all the local people employed. I mean, you know
- 5:24Speaker 6: there's there's lots of local people. They are employed by
- 5:27Speaker 6: our small businesses and restaurants, and it's so important to
- 5:30Speaker 6: keep this going.
- 5:31Speaker 3: It is and again I will say that nothing and nothing.
- 5:35Speaker 3: I want to say anger.
- 5:36Speaker 5: Let me.
- 5:37Speaker 3: I think disappointment is the is the correct word. Is when,
- 5:40Speaker 3: as you said, the little league teams, the civic organizations,
- 5:44Speaker 3: whatever the case may be, goes into a small business
- 5:47Speaker 3: asking for a donation, but then they don't do their part.
- 5:51Speaker 3: And many of them do, don't get me wrong, but
- 5:52Speaker 3: many they don't do their part. It's like, you know,
- 5:55Speaker 3: I mean, you just want to say, well, when was
- 5:57Speaker 3: the last time you bought something in our store? You
- 5:59Speaker 3: know you're asking for something from us. When when was
- 6:02Speaker 3: the last time that you maybe said no to Amazon
- 6:04Speaker 3: and came into one of these small.
- 6:06Speaker 6: Stores exactly, And it's so important because people don't realize
- 6:10Speaker 6: the number of people that live here in Hurricane and
- 6:13Speaker 6: Putnam County that work at a small business or they
- 6:16Speaker 6: own a small business. And you know, throughout America there's
- 6:20Speaker 6: it's like ninety eight or ninety nine percent of businesses
- 6:23Speaker 6: in the US are small businesses, and they have like
- 6:26Speaker 6: sixty million employees. And I mean it's it's like thirty
- 6:30Speaker 6: million small businesses throughout America. It's crazy, and they're all everywhere,
- 6:34Speaker 6: and a lot of them are home based, are small,
- 6:37Speaker 6: have three, four, five six employees. We need to support
- 6:41Speaker 6: those those businesses every single day. But really we need
- 6:44Speaker 6: to make an impact this Saturday, and I you know,
- 6:46Speaker 6: I'll be I'll be down on Main Street, you know
- 6:48Speaker 6: at Oodles and other places that Oodles.
- 6:52Speaker 5: Is one of my favorites I go to and I'll
- 6:55Speaker 5: be there this Saturday shopping and it's it's it's wonderful
- 6:59Speaker 5: to me.
- 7:00Speaker 3: You're Scott Edwards of Hurricane about small business Saturday. Give
- 7:03Speaker 3: me you mentioned Noodles. It's a great store in Hurricane.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Give us a few more of those small businesses that
- 7:08Speaker 3: maybe people that aren't familiar with the area may not
- 7:11Speaker 3: know about.
- 7:14Speaker 6: Bearwood Company and uh and that's on Main Street. And
- 7:18Speaker 6: and Heritage Company. They're they're fairly new over on Midland Trail,
- 7:21Speaker 6: just you know, within walking distant the main Street.
- 7:24Speaker 5: And I'll tell you what.
- 7:25Speaker 6: And they both make handmade it's all wood products, a
- 7:28Speaker 6: lot of it's local wood right here from West Virginia.
- 7:31Speaker 6: They both make awesome products. A shop at those shops.
- 7:35Speaker 5: They're phenomenal.
- 7:36Speaker 6: They can personalize things, they can build big things, small things.
- 7:39Speaker 5: It's wonderful.
- 7:40Speaker 6: Sunny Sky's Boutique is a fairly new boutique in downtown Hurricane.
- 7:45Speaker 6: And then we've had the Hurricane Floor on Gift Shop
- 7:48Speaker 6: for many, many many years. So those are just those
- 7:50Speaker 6: are just a few that are that are in Hurricane.
- 7:52Speaker 6: You know, Irish and Indy. It's a women's boutique that's
- 7:56Speaker 6: in Hurricane. And of course if you're hungry, swing around
- 7:59Speaker 6: the Farley's hig Dogs. Everybody loves Farley's Hot Dogs. Main Street,
- 8:03Speaker 6: Main Street, Creamy and Creamery and Grill. They've got the
- 8:05Speaker 6: best hamburgers, nice cream around. And Sergio's. We have people
- 8:09Speaker 6: travel from all over for Sergio's wonderful, wonderful Italian food.
- 8:15Speaker 6: And Dave, have you had sergery.
- 8:16Speaker 3: As oh now what do you think? Of course I have,
- 8:18Speaker 3: of course, Uh.
- 8:19Speaker 5: Here I've seen I've seen you there and I know
- 8:21Speaker 5: you love you love Italian.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Here here's a little hack for you. One of the
- 8:24Speaker 3: I mean, I've never had anything bad at sergei Is,
- 8:26Speaker 3: but one thing, uh that's probably my favorite is the
- 8:29Speaker 3: steak Tourdelini. Get the steak Tordellini.
- 8:31Speaker 6: When you go there, get the steak and then and
- 8:34Speaker 6: then and if you don't want Sergio's, go down to
- 8:36Speaker 6: Bow and that dough company, best wood fire pizza you've
- 8:39Speaker 6: ever had in your life. It's it's right right on
- 8:41Speaker 6: Main Street. So yes, I urge everybody to shop local,
- 8:45Speaker 6: eat local, you know, eat and then there's so many others,
- 8:49Speaker 6: not just on Main Street and Midland Trail, there's so
- 8:51Speaker 6: many others in Hurricane and Putnam County or wherever you're at.
- 8:54Speaker 6: Go to your local, your local restaurant, your local shop,
- 8:59Speaker 6: and buy there and just it will make their day
- 9:02Speaker 6: if you just if you haven't done it this year,
- 9:04Speaker 6: go this Saturday and do something, buy one thing.
- 9:07Speaker 5: It will make their day.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Now we're talking about small business Saturday. But also understand
- 9:11Speaker 3: that you've got an event coming up on I think
- 9:13Speaker 3: the date was Thursday, December twelfth, you wanted to talk about.
- 9:18Speaker 5: We do.
- 9:18Speaker 6: It's a shop and eat on Main Street. So our
- 9:21Speaker 6: local businesses on Main Street got together and said, hey,
- 9:24Speaker 6: let's let's all be open from four pm to eight
- 9:27Speaker 6: pm and shop and eat at our local Hurrican Main
- 9:30Speaker 6: Street businesses. And there's some giveaways and stuff. You can
- 9:33Speaker 6: stop in social event space and you can enter to
- 9:37Speaker 6: win a gift basket and you pick up a card
- 9:39Speaker 6: and you go down and get it checked off from
- 9:41Speaker 6: the local business. You don't have to buy anything to participate,
- 9:45Speaker 6: but what we'd like for you to and we'll give
- 9:48Speaker 6: away some stuff. But everybody's will be open four pm
- 9:50Speaker 6: to eight pm. It's kind of a it's just another
- 9:55Speaker 6: special night, you know, to shop local Thursday, December twelfth,
- 10:00Speaker 6: and then I will tell you that's two days before
- 10:02Speaker 6: and you're probably getting ready to ask me about this,
- 10:04Speaker 6: but I hope, if not, I'm going to talk about anyway.
- 10:06Speaker 6: Our Christmas Parade this year is going to be phenomenal.
- 10:11Speaker 6: The theme is the Hurricane Polar Express. We've had people
- 10:15Speaker 6: asking for a theme, the Polar Express theme for years now,
- 10:20Speaker 6: so we're doing the Polar Express and it's presented by
- 10:23Speaker 6: Better Homes and Gardens real Estate Central. We appreciate those folks.
- 10:27Speaker 6: They sponsor our parade and make sure we can do
- 10:30Speaker 6: all the stuff. But we expect it to be one
- 10:33Speaker 6: of our largest parades we've ever had. So it's already
- 10:36Speaker 6: lots and lots and lots of people registering.
- 10:38Speaker 5: It's awesome. And we have it at noon.
- 10:40Speaker 6: This is the second year our parade's been at noon,
- 10:42Speaker 6: and the community absolutely loves the noon parade.
- 10:46Speaker 3: So yeah, and there's a lot that well, and I
- 10:48Speaker 3: know our radio stations are going to be there. I know,
- 10:51Speaker 3: I'm pretty sure V one hundred is going to be there.
- 10:52Speaker 3: I'm going to be there representing the Classic Gross station
- 10:55Speaker 3: ninety eighth seven the Mountain. I think ninety six one
- 10:58Speaker 3: KWS is going to be there. All three of us
- 11:00Speaker 3: were in the parade last year. We're looking forward to
- 11:02Speaker 3: being there again this year as well. And it's a
- 11:04Speaker 3: big old parade, man, it really is.
- 11:06Speaker 5: Yes, yes, it is.
- 11:08Speaker 6: And then by the way, December twenty first, from four
- 11:11Speaker 6: to seven pm on Main Street, we're having free horse
- 11:15Speaker 6: and carriage rides and that's presented by Premium Home Warranty.
- 11:18Speaker 6: That's Saturday December twenty first, four to seven pm, and
- 11:23Speaker 6: of course it's where it always is. Drop off and
- 11:26Speaker 6: pick up is a Putton County Bank parking lot on
- 11:28Speaker 6: Main Street. We'll have free hot chocolate and you know
- 11:31Speaker 6: other things out there will just be a neat, a
- 11:33Speaker 6: neat evening, hurreaking. Downtown's always lit up, businesses open. It's
- 11:38Speaker 6: just a great times of meat and see people a
- 11:40Speaker 6: few days before Christmas. That's December twenty first, from four
- 11:43Speaker 6: to seven pm. It's going to be it's going to
- 11:45Speaker 6: be awesome. And I will tell you know, Thanksgiving tomorrow,
- 11:49Speaker 6: Christmas season coming, and we all need to remember the reason,
- 11:53Speaker 6: you know, reason for Christmas is, you know, are the
- 11:56Speaker 6: birth of birth of Jesus Christ. So we need to
- 11:59Speaker 6: remember that as we celebrate this wonderful Christmas season. Wherever
- 12:02Speaker 6: you're at, but uh right here in Hurricane, it's going
- 12:05Speaker 6: to be awesome, all.
- 12:05Speaker 3: Right, Mary, It's always a pleasure to talk to you.
- 12:08Speaker 3: I will see you on Saturday. I'm going to be
- 12:10Speaker 3: down there on Saturday, as I traditionally, am so looking
- 12:13Speaker 3: forward to seeing you and your family. Have a great,
- 12:15Speaker 3: great Thanksgiving, and don't eat too many deviled eggs, okay.
- 12:20Speaker 5: I thought you were coming to my house tomorrow too.
- 12:23Speaker 3: You that possibly, but well I got to you know,
- 12:25Speaker 3: I got to get home in time for the Cowboys game.
- 12:27Speaker 5: You know that we hope they lose right now.
- 12:31Speaker 3: No, no, we're playing the Giants. I mean, honestly, I
- 12:34Speaker 3: think you and I could probably beat the Giants right now,
- 12:35Speaker 3: but who knows? Who knows?
- 12:38Speaker 5: A good God day.
- 12:39Speaker 3: I appreciates all right, Mayor Scott Edwards, appreciate you being here.

- 13:04Speaker 3: Bigleypiggli Wiggly Hotline three zero four three four five fifty
- 13:07Speaker 3: eight fifty eight. Tony the Taylor Text three zero four
- 13:09Speaker 3: nine three five five zero zero eight. Tex says, Hey, Dave,
- 13:13Speaker 3: how how come nobody has said anything about the Commode
- 13:15Speaker 3: Bowl this year. It's going on as far as I
- 13:19Speaker 3: know in Dunbar. As matter of fact, I was just
- 13:21Speaker 3: talking to Steve Animal on my way down here this
- 13:24Speaker 3: morning out in the hall, Steve from our sister station
- 13:26Speaker 3: in the Mountain, and I think our man Shockly is
- 13:28Speaker 3: actually going to be out there. He's a Dunbar guy,
- 13:31Speaker 3: so I think he's going to be out there tomorrow. So,
- 13:33Speaker 3: as far as I know, unless I hear otherwise, the
- 13:35Speaker 3: Commode Bowl, the annual Commode Bowl will be going on
- 13:39Speaker 3: as it always has in Dunbar. And again we'll have
- 13:41Speaker 3: some more information available on that when we get it.
- 13:44Speaker 3: But yeah, it's it's uh, it's still happening, all right.
- 13:47Speaker 3: We're going to take a break. When we come back.
- 13:49Speaker 3: We're going to talk to Jason Quatrell from Union Mission.
- 13:53Speaker 3: They've got some big things going on this holiday season.

- 13:58Speaker 3: it's going to kind of be open line. Anything you
- 14:00Speaker 3: want to talk about, you want to talk a little Thanksgiving,

- 17:21Speaker 3: how are you?
- 17:21Speaker 8: I'm doing fine?
- 17:22Speaker 5: Man?
- 17:22Speaker 3: How are you? I'm doing fine? So I got to
- 17:24Speaker 3: ask you because if you've listened to the show, this
- 17:26Speaker 3: has been a thing with me for the last couple
- 17:28Speaker 3: of weeks. I've been asking every guest on the show
- 17:30Speaker 3: your favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal?
- 17:34Speaker 8: The favorite part of my Thanksgiving meal would have to
- 17:37Speaker 8: be the stuffing.
- 17:38Speaker 3: This okay, all right, because here's where we are. I
- 17:40Speaker 3: really haven't kept a running total yet, okay, but I'm
- 17:44Speaker 3: gonna say, and totally as Hoppy Kirchfelle would say, I
- 17:47Speaker 3: would say that the stuffing slash dressing is in the
- 17:50Speaker 3: lead as well it should be. I could eat it
- 17:53Speaker 3: without the turkey.
- 17:53Speaker 5: I do.
- 17:54Speaker 8: I usually eat it before it even makes it to
- 17:56Speaker 8: the oven.
- 17:57Speaker 3: Really, yeah, I'm a fan. I'm a fan one hundred percent.
- 18:01Speaker 3: All right, So I know you just wrapped up a
- 18:03Speaker 3: program for teens. So let's talk about that before we
- 18:08Speaker 3: get into the other reason you're here. We'll go ahead.
- 18:11Speaker 8: Last twenty years or so we've been doing adoptive Family.
- 18:14Speaker 8: I decided let's let's go with teens this year. Because
- 18:17Speaker 8: they seem to get bottom of the barrel sometimes. So
- 18:21Speaker 8: thirteen to sixteen year olds, we uh are doing adopted
- 18:25Speaker 8: Family for this year, and we had four hundred kids
- 18:28Speaker 8: sign up for this that were in need of this,
- 18:30Speaker 8: and we were hurting. Thank you so much for being
- 18:32Speaker 8: willing to bring me on for that. But man, the
- 18:37Speaker 8: next couple of days after I called you last week,
- 18:40Speaker 8: we had some great supporters.
- 18:42Speaker 3: Man get on a.
- 18:43Speaker 8: Phone call me and say, hey, we will take care
- 18:44Speaker 8: of those teenagers for you.
- 18:46Speaker 3: And you are right, and I talk I've gotten information
- 18:49Speaker 3: about this, not only from you, but other organism similar
- 18:51Speaker 3: type organizations as well. The teens kind of get forgotten about.
- 18:54Speaker 5: A little bit.
- 18:55Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I mean everybody, and it's you know, God
- 18:57Speaker 3: bless me. Everybody wants to help out the little kids,
- 18:59Speaker 3: and that's that's all great, but you know, once you
- 19:01Speaker 3: get to a certain age and the toys aren't the
- 19:03Speaker 3: thing anymore, people forget about the teens.
- 19:05Speaker 8: Well, you got you know, you got the little kids
- 19:07Speaker 8: with Santa Claus and all that, and it's all neat
- 19:09Speaker 8: and cute and sweet. But then yeah, teenagers, they get
- 19:12Speaker 8: they get left left out a little bit, like you said,
- 19:15Speaker 8: and it's pretty cool to see these kids get Christmas.
- 19:19Speaker 8: I'll tell you.
- 19:21Speaker 3: So if people I know you said that everybody met
- 19:24Speaker 3: the need on this, but there's always a continuing need.
- 19:27Speaker 8: This was just for this particular Yeah, never goes away
- 19:30Speaker 8: with us, you know, three hundred sixt five days, twenty
- 19:33Speaker 8: four to seven, never never goes away. But yeah, this
- 19:35Speaker 8: particular need with adopted family was met. Four hundred teenagers.
- 19:39Speaker 3: That's awesome. It's awesome. Again we're talking with Jason Contrel
- 19:42Speaker 3: of Union Mission. All right, so tomorrow, I guess, is
- 19:46Speaker 3: the thirteenth annual Drumstick Dash. Talk about that.
- 19:49Speaker 8: Yeah, thirteen years of doing this race. It just blows
- 19:54Speaker 8: my mind that people want to get up and run
- 19:55Speaker 8: on Thanksgiving morning. Maybe to make extra room for that
- 20:00Speaker 8: stuff that we were talking about, but it's a it's
- 20:04Speaker 8: a big event for us. Man when we have anywhere
- 20:06Speaker 8: from right now we have nine hundred runners signed up,
- 20:09Speaker 8: it's a little low for us. I think it's the
- 20:11Speaker 8: rain that's that they're forecasting. Maybe, but usually anywhere from
- 20:14Speaker 8: eleven twelve hundred racers. Thanksgiving morning, people bring their dogs,
- 20:18Speaker 8: people dress up. Dave, you wouldn't believe the amount of
- 20:20Speaker 8: people that come dressed in Turkey outfits. I mean it's crazy.
- 20:23Speaker 8: It's it's a really fun event. It's a lot of fun.
- 20:26Speaker 8: Starts at nine o'clock tomorrow morning. The race actually starts
- 20:28Speaker 8: at nine o'clock tomorrow morning, starts at Hadad and then
- 20:32Speaker 8: goes down to the Capitol and back three point one
- 20:34Speaker 8: miles five k. It's it's one of our best events.
- 20:38Speaker 8: And people come from all over it's all over I
- 20:40Speaker 8: mean all over these coasts. We have people i mean
- 20:42Speaker 8: all over the country really to visit family and they
- 20:44Speaker 8: end up running in the race. It's it's pretty neat.
- 20:48Speaker 3: So this this is the thirteenth Yearbatist has gone on.
- 20:51Speaker 3: I mean it started, I'm just presuming, really small and
- 20:53Speaker 3: just kind of worked its weblood it.
- 20:54Speaker 8: Is now started out across the river over at u See,
- 20:58Speaker 8: and then it got so big that you see, couldn't
- 21:00Speaker 8: handle the amount of parking, and so we moved over
- 21:02Speaker 8: here probably ten years ago or so, and it's been
- 21:07Speaker 8: an had Ad ever since and growing ever since.
- 21:10Speaker 3: And again we're talking with Jason Quatrell from a Union
- 21:13Speaker 3: mission and let's talk. You talked about the route, but uh,
- 21:17Speaker 3: I mean you got to be and I know runners
- 21:19Speaker 3: they're all crazy. Yeah, and I mean that in the
- 21:21Speaker 3: best possible way. My wife's one of them. Oh okay,
- 21:24Speaker 3: she's crazy. Okay.
- 21:25Speaker 5: Uh.
- 21:25Speaker 3: I guess good friends that that do it. I mean,
- 21:28Speaker 3: folks will run in any you mentioned the rain or whatever.
- 21:31Speaker 3: But they're kind of like golfers, you know that you
- 21:34Speaker 3: just give them an excuse and they're going to be
- 21:35Speaker 3: out there running. And so don't let the rain keep
- 21:38Speaker 3: you away. And we have a lot of people at
- 21:40Speaker 3: these events, Jason, that don't necessarily run. They just kind
- 21:44Speaker 3: of show up to to Cheermont. Yeah.
- 21:46Speaker 8: Yeah, there's a whole lot of people in the sidelines
- 21:47Speaker 8: cheering and and and clapping and listening to the music
- 21:50Speaker 8: we have. We have live music there. It's it's really
- 21:53Speaker 8: really cool. But but yeah, a lot of people just
- 21:55Speaker 8: come and walk. Families just come and walk, and yeah,
- 21:58Speaker 8: and it's just a good family event.
- 22:01Speaker 3: Talk with Jason Contrel again from Union mission of Dave Alan.
- 22:04Speaker 3: Showing five to eighty Live is brought to you a

- 23:03Speaker 8: And yeah, don't don't stay away because you haven't registered.
- 23:06Speaker 8: It's not too late.
- 23:07Speaker 3: It's never too late, and events like this are not
- 23:09Speaker 3: possible without sponsors. Absolutely, you want to give a shout
- 23:12Speaker 3: out to some of your sponsors.
- 23:13Speaker 8: Lisa Larry pack Union Mission Behavior Health Center has done
- 23:18Speaker 8: a good job given to this event. I can't can't
- 23:27Speaker 8: think I think that's about it.
- 23:28Speaker 3: Okay, but but but again we big shout out to
- 23:31Speaker 3: those people because you don't pull off events like this
- 23:32Speaker 3: without the sponsorships. I mean not just this event, but
- 23:35Speaker 3: year round.
- 23:35Speaker 8: Yeah, year round. We have some great sponsors that that
- 23:39Speaker 8: that work with us year round, but this particular event
- 23:42Speaker 8: really you know, the the racers and the registration, they
- 23:46Speaker 8: take care of the costs for us pretty well.
- 23:48Speaker 3: Let's talk about the overall mission of Union Mission.
- 23:52Speaker 8: Yeah, so the overall mission has been has been helping
- 23:55Speaker 8: the hurting people of West Virginia for one hundred and
- 23:57Speaker 8: thirteen years. Man, we do that in many different ways.
- 24:02Speaker 8: Our warehouse, you know, running the numbers the last couple
- 24:05Speaker 8: of months. October usually they've twenty twenty five pounds of
- 24:09Speaker 8: food goes out of our warehouse a month. Right, the
- 24:12Speaker 8: month of October, fifty four thousand pounds of food went
- 24:15Speaker 8: out of our warehouse.
- 24:16Speaker 3: I mean that's a lot.
- 24:17Speaker 8: I was I almost fell out of my chair in
- 24:19Speaker 8: our business meeting.
- 24:20Speaker 3: What do you contribute that to?
- 24:22Speaker 8: Well, that month some of that went down to North
- 24:25Speaker 8: Carolina for to help folks that were in the flood. Yeah, so,
- 24:31Speaker 8: but a lot of that is we're just seeing even
- 24:35Speaker 8: we're seeing working families having a hard time making ends meet.
- 24:38Speaker 8: Now we've started doing some fresh products as far as
- 24:41Speaker 8: eggs and such. We raise chickens, they lay eggs, We
- 24:47Speaker 8: sell them out of our store for cheap, just to
- 24:49Speaker 8: make sure people try. Now, what do you raise the
- 24:50Speaker 8: chickens our property there, We've got we've got campus there
- 24:53Speaker 8: that we've got pretty good sized coop, and we collect
- 24:56Speaker 8: the eggs and wash the eggs and we're licensed to
- 24:59Speaker 8: do all that through the through the state. But just
- 25:02Speaker 8: trying to make sure people get protein on the table
- 25:05Speaker 8: they need it and sell it at a extremely reduced
- 25:09Speaker 8: price because things are getting so expensive, you know that,
- 25:12Speaker 8: and everybody knows that, they see it, and just trying
- 25:15Speaker 8: to help people in any way we possibly can, from
- 25:17Speaker 8: preschool to drug addiction to homelessness to kids. We try
- 25:24Speaker 8: to buy on every front in the state of West Virginia.
- 25:27Speaker 3: And again, when you think about the people that are
- 25:30Speaker 3: served by organizations like yours, Jason, it's not always what
- 25:35Speaker 3: you think. It's not all I mean, you know, people
- 25:39Speaker 3: have their stereotypes, they have this is what I think.
- 25:42Speaker 3: This is who I think uses these services. But a
- 25:45Speaker 3: great number of your people are working people. These aren't
- 25:48Speaker 3: people just looking for a handout. These are people that
- 25:51Speaker 3: are are working.
- 25:52Speaker 8: Yeah, talking about that, Yeah, there's no question I mean.
- 25:55Speaker 8: And I'll be honest with you before you know, ten
- 25:57Speaker 8: years ago, before I took this job, I always had
- 25:59Speaker 8: this stereotype of people trying to work a system or
- 26:02Speaker 8: treat people trying to get by with something or you know,
- 26:04Speaker 8: get food for free or whatever. But there are genuinely
- 26:06Speaker 8: West Virginia people out there that are working forty our week,
- 26:09Speaker 8: working part time jobs the best they can. Uh, mom
- 26:12Speaker 8: and dad working and still not being able to make
- 26:15Speaker 8: ends meat. And they'll come to us and sit down
- 26:17Speaker 8: with our family Service coordinators and we will We'll send them,
- 26:22Speaker 8: send them away with a car load of food. We'll
- 26:24Speaker 8: send them away with We help people that have house fires.
- 26:28Speaker 8: We'll try to put them up in hotels. We'll try
- 26:30Speaker 8: to get them gift cards to restaurants to see them
- 26:33Speaker 8: eat so they can eat while they're trying to get
- 26:36Speaker 8: things together with their house. Many different levels, many different ways. Man,
- 26:39Speaker 8: we try to we try to help these people, and
- 26:42Speaker 8: they're not all like you said, what you think. I mean,
- 26:45Speaker 8: they are really hard working people that are trying to
- 26:50Speaker 8: trying to get things together for kids and trying to
- 26:52Speaker 8: get things together for for their family, to feed them,
- 26:55Speaker 8: to to medical expenses, and and man, it's just tough nowadays,
- 27:00Speaker 8: and we try to we try to bridge that gap.
- 27:02Speaker 3: Talk about that process, Jayson, What does that process look like?
- 27:05Speaker 3: I come in, you know, I'm a working person and
- 27:07Speaker 3: maybe wife, two kids, you know, whatever, I come in.
- 27:10Speaker 3: What does the process look like?
- 27:12Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 27:12Speaker 8: Man, So so that's usually the ones that are that
- 27:15Speaker 8: are the most shy, like they're working and they don't
- 27:18Speaker 8: want to come in, like it takes a lot for
- 27:20Speaker 8: them to pick up the phone call.
- 27:22Speaker 3: You can call.
- 27:22Speaker 8: I mean, if you're hurting right now, please don't don't.
- 27:25Speaker 8: Don't feel bashful about that. Everybody goes through hard times.
- 27:28Speaker 8: Pick up the phone call three zero four nine two

- 27:50Speaker 8: get you set up for Thanksgiving. If you if you're hurting,

- 28:00Speaker 8: We want to help. We want to make sure that
- 28:03Speaker 8: you get food in your mouth. I mean, I can
- 28:05Speaker 8: imagine going on angry, could you. I never grew up
- 28:07Speaker 8: that way.
- 28:07Speaker 3: No, no, I was spoiled man by the grace of God,
- 28:10Speaker 3: as I say, yeah, sir, yeah, all right, let's get
- 28:13Speaker 3: back to drumstick Dash. It's happening tomorrow. Give us the time,

- 28:24Speaker 8: that you can click on and put all your information in.
- 28:27Speaker 8: You can call and ask for Katie Bush three zero
- 28:31Speaker 8: four nine two five zero three six six. She's our
- 28:34Speaker 8: special events coordinator, Miss Katie Bush, and she will get
- 28:38Speaker 8: you taken care of as far as registration. Or you
- 28:40Speaker 8: can just show up tomorrow morning at Hadad Riverfront at

- 29:14Speaker 3: of the TV to watch a little football and enjoy
- 29:15Speaker 3: some great Thanksgiving food.
- 29:17Speaker 8: I know it's hard to believe, but I'm not a runner.
- 29:19Speaker 8: I know you have a hard time believing me.
- 29:21Speaker 3: The same with me. Yeah, people look at me and
- 29:23Speaker 3: they think that guy's a run Now you see a runner.
- 29:27Speaker 3: If you see me running there, as the old joke says,
- 29:28Speaker 3: there's somebody chasing me. You know, it's all the ploy
- 29:30Speaker 3: called nine one one. All right, Jason, I appreciate you

- 30:38Speaker 3: Well I got a question here. You know you thought
- 30:40Speaker 3: you were done. Somebody texted into question, does Union Mission
- 30:43Speaker 3: help with something like help in repairing the section of
- 30:45Speaker 3: floor dry roted do to an undetected water leak?
- 30:49Speaker 8: At one time you and your mission used to do
- 30:51Speaker 8: things like that. I just don't have the staff anymore
- 30:53Speaker 8: to be able to handle that. They used to have
- 30:55Speaker 8: a crew that they would pay to go out and
- 30:58Speaker 8: do that. And because of the economy and because of
- 31:01Speaker 8: payroll and such, we I've had the I just don't
- 31:05Speaker 8: have the staff to be.

- 37:46Speaker 3: that up with another text that said Happy Thanksgiving, Dave,
- 37:48Speaker 3: I do appreciate that. All right, some stuff from the newsroom.
- 37:53Speaker 3: Many of us have wondered just what the senator ship.
- 38:01Speaker 3: If it's not a word, it probably should be of
- 38:04Speaker 3: Now Governor Jim Justice is going to look like, well,
- 38:07Speaker 3: we may be getting a hint. Brad mclahanny has a
- 38:11Speaker 3: story posted about it this morning wv Metro News dot com.
- 38:14Speaker 3: The governor has stated that he doesn't know when he
- 38:19Speaker 3: will officially start his new role as a US Senator,
- 38:23Speaker 3: replacing Joe Manchin, who opted, of course, not to run
- 38:27Speaker 3: for reelection. He has said, though the governor has said
- 38:32Speaker 3: that he will he will continue to coach high school
- 38:37Speaker 3: basketball for Greenbrier East. Now, these comments all coming yesterday,
- 38:44Speaker 3: and his Brad's story points out this is where it
- 38:48Speaker 3: kind of gets a little interesting. Our next governor, the
- 38:52Speaker 3: current Attorney General, Patrick Morrissey, is due to be sworn
- 38:57Speaker 3: in on January thirteenth. Now, the governor yesterday, in replying
- 39:02Speaker 3: to a question from longtime friend of the show, Stephen
- 39:06Speaker 3: Allen Adams of Auguen Newspaper said, quote, we haven't decided
- 39:10Speaker 3: absolutely yet. It seems to me this is Governor talking
- 39:15Speaker 3: like we're going to have all kinds of confusion if
- 39:17Speaker 3: I do it, talking about the governor being sweared in
- 39:20Speaker 3: a senator prior to the thirteenth. Now, try to follow
- 39:25Speaker 3: along here. There's going to be a ten day gap
- 39:29Speaker 3: between when US senators normally take office and when the
- 39:34Speaker 3: new governor of the state of West Virginia is inaugurated.
- 39:38Speaker 3: The state Senate president in this case is still Craig Blair,
- 39:46Speaker 3: who would typically fill in that ten day gap. Now,
- 39:49Speaker 3: keep in mind, though Craig Blair was defeated in his
- 39:53Speaker 3: primary back in May, he's still the Senate president though,
- 39:56Speaker 3: and lieutenant governor, and they're going to decide upon a
- 40:02Speaker 3: new Senate president. It's a three way battle between Senators
- 40:09Speaker 3: Eric Tarr, Tom Tacuba, and Randy Smith. Now, a new
- 40:13Speaker 3: Senate president is supposed to be chosen in the next
- 40:19Speaker 3: couple of weeks during interims, which we held in Charleston. Now,
- 40:23Speaker 3: Governor Justice, going back to him, is saying, quote, the
- 40:27Speaker 3: cleanest way for me to stay in office would be
- 40:31Speaker 3: till January thirteenth, then pass that torch directly to Patrick
- 40:35Speaker 3: meaning Attorney General and now governor like Patrick Morrissey. So
- 40:39Speaker 3: it's kind of it's kind of confusing here. But what
- 40:46Speaker 3: about the subject of the governor continuing to say he
- 40:51Speaker 3: is going to coach high school basketball as a US senator. Now,
- 40:57Speaker 3: it was problematic to a lot of folks that the
- 41:01Speaker 3: governor of the state of West Virginia was continuing to
- 41:06Speaker 3: coach high school basketball. Now he's a US senator or
- 41:12Speaker 3: will be a US Senator based supposedly in Washington, and
- 41:20Speaker 3: he's going to continue to coach girls basketball. I'm not
- 41:28Speaker 3: I'm not here to say he can or can't do it.
- 41:30Speaker 3: That's not my role. I've got my opinions on it.
- 41:32Speaker 3: But he's going to continue to coach girls basketball. And
- 41:38Speaker 3: don't know what kind of committee assignments, if any, he's
- 41:40Speaker 3: going to have in Washington. You know, being a US
- 41:44Speaker 3: senator must like being a legislator. I was talking yesterday
- 41:47Speaker 3: to a friend of mine who is an incoming legislator
- 41:50Speaker 3: and he's taken office for the first time, and uh, yes, said,
- 41:54Speaker 3: you know, we'll be ready because when you hear us
- 41:57Speaker 3: talking on the news when the when the llegiature comes
- 42:00Speaker 3: into session, that you gavel in at eleven in the
- 42:03Speaker 3: morning and then you gavel out at two or two thirty. No, no, no, no,
- 42:05Speaker 3: it doesn't work that way. You have even as a legislator,
- 42:08Speaker 3: you have committee meetings that start at six, six thirty
- 42:11Speaker 3: in the morning, and as the session starts to wind down,
- 42:15Speaker 3: you don't get out of there until you know, ten
- 42:17Speaker 3: thirty eleven o'clock at night, and then are back at
- 42:19Speaker 3: five thirty or six the next morning. It's just part
- 42:21Speaker 3: of being a legislator. So that's in the legislature, but
- 42:24Speaker 3: you're still in the state of West Virginia. Now, a
- 42:27Speaker 3: lot of the legislators will return to their homes that
- 42:30Speaker 3: they live somewhere relatively close. Many get an apartment or
- 42:32Speaker 3: stay in a hotel or something here so they can
- 42:34Speaker 3: be back bright and early and fresh the next morning.
- 42:38Speaker 3: But that's within the state. We're talking about a US
- 42:41Speaker 3: senator that is going to be spending apparently a great
- 42:46Speaker 3: deal of his time in his home state. Now that's
- 42:48Speaker 3: not to say that Joe Mansion and Sheldy Moore Capito
- 42:53Speaker 3: don't spend a lot of time in their home state,
- 42:54Speaker 3: because obviously they do, but they spend a whole lot
- 42:57Speaker 3: of time in Washington as well. And I don't think
- 42:59Speaker 3: that we are going to see that as much from
- 43:03Speaker 3: Governor Justice. And I think he pretty much laid that
- 43:06Speaker 3: out there yesterday. But you also have to remember that
- 43:10Speaker 3: the people of West Virginia voted overwhelmingly to send Jim
- 43:17Speaker 3: Justice to Washington. I mean, the race with all due
- 43:19Speaker 3: respect to mayor of Glenn Elliott, a former mayor of Wheeling,
- 43:23Speaker 3: Glenn Elliott, great guy. I had him on the show
- 43:26Speaker 3: several times. The race wasn't even close. And the people
- 43:31Speaker 3: of West Virginia knew this about the governor and they
- 43:34Speaker 3: elected him anyway. And so he kind of put it
- 43:37Speaker 3: all to rest yesterday by saying, yeah, I'm going to
- 43:39Speaker 3: continue to coach. I'm going to continue to be a
- 43:42Speaker 3: high schoo girls high school basketball coach. So there you
- 43:46Speaker 3: have it. In the meantime, we now have a twenty
- 43:49Speaker 3: twenty four Christmas ornament from the Governor's office. Morgan Pemberton
- 43:52Speaker 3: as a story posted about it. If you want to
- 43:54Speaker 3: see it for yourself, it's over at the website wv
- 43:57Speaker 3: metronews dot com. And of course, of course, the new
- 44:00Speaker 3: Christmas ornament does have Baby Dog on it. It was
- 44:04Speaker 3: all announced yesterday at a ceremony at the Culture Center.
- 44:07Speaker 3: And if you see this thing, and again Morgan's got
- 44:10Speaker 3: a great story and a picture posted about a WV
- 44:12Speaker 3: Metronews dot com, it looks like baby Dog is a
- 44:16Speaker 3: giant on top of the Capitol building. Now, had I
- 44:20Speaker 3: designed it, I would have had Baby Dog hanging off
- 44:23Speaker 3: the Capitol kind of like King Kong, you know from
- 44:26Speaker 3: the movie Photos. But that's just me. That's why they
- 44:28Speaker 3: don't let me do things like that. And I'll say
- 44:30Speaker 3: this before we go to break And I got several
- 44:32Speaker 3: texts to get to one thing about the governor's tenure
- 44:37Speaker 3: in office. It certainly gave us a lot to talk about,
- 44:43Speaker 3: from the governor who was elected as a Democrat changing
- 44:47Speaker 3: his party to Republican, to the giant heaping platters of manure,
- 44:52Speaker 3: to the COVID sweepstakes with the governor going on Oprah
- 44:55Speaker 3: saying you'll get a truck and you'll get a gun,
- 44:57Speaker 3: and you'll get a truck and you'll get a boat,
- 44:59Speaker 3: to feuds with Senate leadership, to not living in the
- 45:03Speaker 3: governor's mansion as a constitution and later the court's mandated two.
- 45:07Speaker 3: As I said, is continuing to coach girls high school
- 45:10Speaker 3: basketball to telling Bette Miller to kiss baby dogs, heinee, etc. Etc.
- 45:14Speaker 3: It has certainly been an interesting eight years for sure,
- 45:17Speaker 3: and Governor elect Patrick Morris, He's going to have a
- 45:20Speaker 3: whole lot to live up to as far as keeping
- 45:22Speaker 3: it interesting. It's eight minutes away from ten. Older adults

- 49:28Speaker 3: text says, do we really expect Jimbo to be anything
- 49:30Speaker 3: other than a rubber stamp for Trump? Says a texture.
- 49:35Speaker 3: All right, so if you're a state worker, you're gonna
- 49:37Speaker 3: get half the day off plus all of tomorrow and
- 49:40Speaker 3: Friday as well. The governor making that announcement yesterday, I wonder,
- 49:43Speaker 3: I just was thinking about this this morning. I wonder
- 49:45Speaker 3: how long it's going to be till we take the
- 49:47Speaker 3: entire week off for Thanksgiving. And I'm not hating on it.
- 49:51Speaker 3: I'm just saying I am old enough to remember though,
- 49:53Speaker 3: when kids were in school through Wednesday during the Thanksgiving week.
- 49:58Speaker 3: And again I'm not hating on any I'm just saying,
- 50:00Speaker 3: I just wonder if we get to that point where
- 50:02Speaker 3: Thanksgiving will be an entire week. So I'd say you'll
- 50:06Speaker 3: probably have that within the next couple of years, all right,
- 50:09Speaker 3: So let me close with this. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and
- 50:14Speaker 3: I certainly hope everyone has a very very happy Thanksgiving.
- 50:19Speaker 3: Again for me, no show tomorrow or Friday. I will
- 50:21Speaker 3: be back on Monday, and with all the guests I've
- 50:25Speaker 3: had on the show over the last week and a half,
- 50:26Speaker 3: or so. I've asked nearly everyone that when I remember
- 50:29Speaker 3: to anyway, what their favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal
- 50:32Speaker 3: was a lot of different answers, but I would have
- 50:33Speaker 3: to say it is the dressing or the stuffing. That's
- 50:36Speaker 3: what most people had said. So win when for me
- 50:39Speaker 3: and win for them as well. But whatever you enjoy
- 50:44Speaker 3: tomorrow as you stuff yourself, if you choose to do that,
- 50:48Speaker 3: just keep a few things in mind. And the following
- 50:51Speaker 3: is a is a daviatorial. Despite all of our issues,
- 50:58Speaker 3: I still believe that we live in the greatest country
- 51:04Speaker 3: on God's green Earth, and the fact that I can
- 51:07Speaker 3: get on this radio every morning and talk to you
- 51:11Speaker 3: is a blessing for me personally. And I appreciate all
- 51:15Speaker 3: of you, even the ones that don't agree with me,
- 51:18Speaker 3: and I don't sometimes agree with them. It is America,
- 51:22Speaker 3: and that's what makes it so dang great here. And
- 51:27Speaker 3: also keep in mind that when you sit down with
- 51:30Speaker 3: your families tomorrow, not everyone has that luxury. Okay, there
- 51:35Speaker 3: are men and women are troops around the world that
- 51:38Speaker 3: are working every day to make it possible for us
- 51:41Speaker 3: to enjoy the food, the family, the football, the shopping
- 51:43Speaker 3: the next day, whatever you want to do. So thank
- 51:46Speaker 3: you to our troops, many of whom would like nothing
- 51:50Speaker 3: better than to be setting around Grandma's dining room table
- 51:54Speaker 3: tomorrow but can't. And let's also give a thought out
- 51:57Speaker 3: tomorrow to the people that are working. Not everyone. It's
- 52:00Speaker 3: Thanksgiving or Christmas or whatever the holiday is off. Our
- 52:03Speaker 3: first responders are medical professionals and yes, our media members.
- 52:08Speaker 3: I've spent many, many Thanksgivings and Christmas is working on
- 52:12Speaker 3: the position hour I won't be this year. Not saying
- 52:14Speaker 3: I won't again, but I'm not this year. Those folks
- 52:17Speaker 3: are going to be working tomorrow, so a thought for them,
- 52:19Speaker 3: and also think that tomorrow when you sit down, you
- 52:23Speaker 3: might be breaking bread with people who may not have
- 52:25Speaker 3: voted the way you did. Don't bring it up. Enjoy
- 52:29Speaker 3: the turkey, the dressing, potatoes, whatever the desserts. Let's don't
- 52:34Speaker 3: use terms like trump tart or lib tart or any
- 52:36Speaker 3: of that. Let's all let all that go for one day.
- 52:39Speaker 3: It's Thanksgiving. Be thankful. But Dave Alan showing five ety
