- October 18 The Heart Can Fool Its Owner Topic: Self-Deception. Scripture: Jeremiah 17:9–10 9 The heart is deceitful above all things and it is exceedingly corrupt. Who can know it? 10 “I, Yahweh, search the mind. I try the heart, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.” Context Jeremiah contrasts trust in human strength with trust in Yahweh, then warns that the human heart can mislead itself. God sees motives and patterns more clearly than selfassessment alone can. Let It Shape Your Life “Follow your heart” sounds comforting until you remember that hearts can rationalize almost anything. We can rename pride as confidence, control as concern, envy as discernment, avoidance as peace, and selfishness as self-care. Jeremiah does not say every desire is evil. He says self-knowledge is limited and easily distorted. That is why Christian discernment needs more than sincerity. You can be completely sincere and still be wrong. Scripture, wise counsel, consequences, community, and prayer help test what your own inner voice is telling you. God searches more deeply than appearances. That can feel threatening until you remember that honest exposure is also the beginning of healing. You do not need to become suspicious of every feeling. You do need enough humility to admit that a strong feeling is not automatically a trustworthy guide. Think About It Where might you be giving yourself the benefit of explanations you would question more carefully if someone else offered them?
