Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: All right, we had to call the emergency hotline here
- 0:10Speaker 1: for Bob Nightingale to go over this story. Bob, thanks
- 0:13Speaker 1: for joining us. Yes, it is no more Dana Brown
- 0:16Speaker 1: running the front office for the Astros. And before we
- 0:19Speaker 1: even get to that, can you chime in on your
- 0:21Speaker 1: notes and your article on.
- 0:23Speaker 2: The status of Joe A Spota the Afterros.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Hold on, hold on, before we get to the Astros. Oh,
- 0:27Speaker 3: were you at the casino with catl Marte? You live
- 0:30Speaker 3: in the Greater Phoenix area. Were you the ones sitting
- 0:33Speaker 3: next Tom.
- 0:33Speaker 4: That I saw? Unfortunately I was out of town.
- 0:37Speaker 5: I think like five or six people shot pictures a
- 0:39Speaker 5: video of them.
- 0:40Speaker 4: So you know, it's just a bad look, you know.
- 0:44Speaker 5: And you know when guys on the Angel List, a
- 0:46Speaker 5: lot of guys don't go to the ballpark.
- 0:48Speaker 4: But just a horrible look.
- 0:50Speaker 5: And I agree, I think it makes a whole organizational
- 0:52Speaker 5: like bad. You can't sit in front of a podium
- 0:55Speaker 5: and Ben Marte and then you disrespecting everybody else in
- 0:59Speaker 5: that club else by saying, oh, it's okay, we're gonna
- 1:03Speaker 5: forgive him.
- 1:04Speaker 4: This is three years a row now.
- 1:06Speaker 5: Last year he took the vacation after the All Star
- 1:08Speaker 5: break that was three days. Then two years and the
- 1:11Speaker 5: year before that took a day off the foual week
- 1:14Speaker 5: of the season and they missed the playoffs by a week.
- 1:17Speaker 5: So who knows where he was? Yeah, yeah, missed by game,
- 1:21Speaker 5: So who knows where he was after? You know, Boston
- 1:24Speaker 5: Viteam Boston Arizona. That's never been you know, that's never
- 1:28Speaker 5: been said yet. He still had you to address the
- 1:30Speaker 5: teammates or anybody else, and it'd be very interesting the
- 1:34Speaker 5: fan reaction when he does finally play, as far as
- 1:37Speaker 5: if they boom or not.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I think there.
- 1:40Speaker 1: I think he's gonna hear it. All right, let's get
- 1:42Speaker 1: to the Astros. I want to run dig in on this,
- 1:45Speaker 1: So let's start with Joe's spot it.
- 1:47Speaker 2: We know Dana Brown is gone. We'll get into why.
- 1:49Speaker 1: But is Joe spotted definitely not going to return or
- 1:53Speaker 1: be on a contract starting next years contract ends after
- 1:56Speaker 1: this season.
- 1:58Speaker 4: Yeah, he's toughen, gonna be gone.
- 2:00Speaker 5: I mean the Astros say, you know, it's up to
- 2:02Speaker 5: Jim Grain he makes a final call. Of course he does.
- 2:05Speaker 5: He's the owner that no decision has been made. Other people,
- 2:08Speaker 5: organizations say no, the decision has definitely been made.
- 2:11Speaker 4: He's gone.
- 2:13Speaker 5: You know, if he had managed Sunday, Remember he was
- 2:15Speaker 5: not there Sunday at a Famin emergency.
- 2:18Speaker 4: They believe that six to zero lead.
- 2:20Speaker 5: If they had lost that game, it wouldn't been interesting
- 2:22Speaker 5: to see if you have been gone too.
- 2:24Speaker 4: But looks like he'll he'll be there for the rest
- 2:27Speaker 4: of the season.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Okay, But because they lost one game, Bob, that makes
- 2:32Speaker 3: a determination of whether you fire your first place manager
- 2:36Speaker 3: in the middle of the year. You fire your first
- 2:39Speaker 3: place GM in the middle of the I just don't
- 2:41Speaker 3: understand why they make this decision. Now, if their contracts
- 2:45Speaker 3: up at the end of the year, you wait one
- 2:46Speaker 3: more month. Let's say they make a deep run and
- 2:49Speaker 3: I mean get into the postseason, they run to the
- 2:51Speaker 3: ALCS somehow, right, Are you still getting rid of Joe
- 2:54Speaker 3: Spoda with the things he's done?
- 2:57Speaker 5: Well, I think Dana Brown was going to let go
- 2:59Speaker 5: if they want a rule series. Obviously it'd been it
- 3:01Speaker 5: before after twenty twenty two with Jim Click and uh,
- 3:05Speaker 5: you know, I think the same thing here with the
- 3:07Speaker 5: spot just the fact that the team is playing that poorly,
- 3:11Speaker 5: just lost six of eight games to three of the
- 3:13Speaker 5: worst teams in baseball, particularly of the A's and the
- 3:18Speaker 5: Angels that lost a couple also to Seattle. And you
- 3:21Speaker 5: know you're below five hundred. So I think Jim Crane
- 3:25Speaker 5: was saying, enough's enough, let's see what we can do here.
- 3:29Speaker 5: It's almost like I think just hit a tipping point,
- 3:32Speaker 5: like we've got to make some change here. We're finding
- 3:34Speaker 5: jam and uh. And you know, Joe Spott has been the.
- 3:38Speaker 4: Hot seat all year, just like Daniel Brown.
- 3:41Speaker 6: Turn first place is turn first place, Bob.
- 3:46Speaker 3: The point is to be in first place to get
- 3:47Speaker 3: to the postseason.
- 3:48Speaker 2: There's nothing about first place.
- 3:50Speaker 3: There's not I don't know, Bob, I don't know. They're
- 3:52Speaker 3: in first place. That's and Joe Spott has done a
- 3:55Speaker 3: lot with not a lot to work with. I'm sorry
- 3:57Speaker 3: the bullpen wasn't very good going to the year. Hater
- 3:59Speaker 3: mister much time Bray, you sucked early. Right, He's kept
- 4:02Speaker 3: them alive. They lose their big acquisition Carlos Korea. You
- 4:06Speaker 3: know they got him back last year, but they lose
- 4:08Speaker 3: him basically for the season. They lost Jeremy Payne. You
- 4:11Speaker 3: for a huge chunk of time. Two Va is not
- 4:13Speaker 3: the same guy. They have one guy really and at
- 4:15Speaker 3: Jordan on Alvaaz. The rest of the team has been
- 4:17Speaker 3: in Atlina or hurt. Joe Spottas should be getting a
- 4:20Speaker 3: contract extension for what he's done.
- 4:24Speaker 4: Is that getting extension?
- 4:25Speaker 5: I mean the fact of matter is a below five
- 4:28Speaker 5: hundred in the worst division in baseball and could go
- 4:31Speaker 5: down the worst division of baseball history. Number once in
- 4:35Speaker 5: a pold season as a team made the playoffs for
- 4:37Speaker 5: the losing record.
- 4:38Speaker 4: This division got a chance to do that.
- 4:41Speaker 5: Uh never reminds you of ninety four ninety five in
- 4:45Speaker 5: the strike year.
- 4:46Speaker 4: I mean, the leading team in the West was twelve
- 4:49Speaker 4: games below five hundred. This is trying to resemble that.
- 4:54Speaker 2: I don't get.
- 4:54Speaker 1: I mean, actually, I think he's the one who got
- 4:56Speaker 1: the Jordan Opera's extension done. Or is that right before
- 4:59Speaker 1: Dana Brown? Maybe it might have Click, might have been
- 5:03Speaker 1: James Clik. Wait, I still have to rewind to the
- 5:05Speaker 1: part you said, Bob about how I know it's crazy,
- 5:08Speaker 1: but let's say the Astros win or even just make
- 5:11Speaker 1: the World Series, even the Alcs, right, you're a Final
- 5:13Speaker 1: four team, they were already set.
- 5:15Speaker 2: No, we stink.
- 5:17Speaker 1: I don't think these guys are good enough. Brown out
- 5:20Speaker 1: a spot out It takes us back to the James
- 5:23Speaker 1: Click scenario where you're like, something going on and did
- 5:25Speaker 1: someone get in trouble? And after all that, we're like, no,
- 5:28Speaker 1: not really, like they just didn't totally see eye and
- 5:31Speaker 1: the Astros did what everybody tries to do, and the sport,
- 5:33Speaker 1: the whole point is what it should be.
- 5:35Speaker 2: The whole point is to win a world series. And
- 5:37Speaker 2: Click was gone.
- 5:38Speaker 1: So isn't that a little bit strange the way to operate, well.
- 5:43Speaker 5: Particular, were gonna let him go to the Detroit deadline
- 5:45Speaker 5: and everything else went to the draft obviously, and obviously
- 5:49Speaker 5: he lost thrust in him. And I think, you know,
- 5:52Speaker 5: losing a blown to six to zero lead to the
- 5:54Speaker 5: a's of all teams in front of your home fans
- 5:57Speaker 5: and having a horrible home stand. But three and six
- 6:00Speaker 5: against you know, three blow of five hundred teams. I
- 6:03Speaker 5: used to think, hey, I'm done. I'm gonna make the
- 6:05Speaker 5: decision anyway. I'm gonna let you lose. That way, if
- 6:08Speaker 5: you want to find employment, maybe somebody can pick you
- 6:11Speaker 5: up in the UH early on, we can start doing
- 6:13Speaker 5: some interviews for jobs. So I think it was just saying,
- 6:16Speaker 5: you know what, it's not working I bought your vetoed
- 6:19Speaker 5: a trade that you tried to make with the Minnesota
- 6:22Speaker 5: Twins in July.
- 6:24Speaker 4: I just don't, you know, trust what you're doing anymore.
- 6:26Speaker 4: And we're making a change.
- 6:27Speaker 2: What was that trade?
- 6:31Speaker 4: Uh? It was it was a uh the reliever break
- 6:34Speaker 4: you for uh.
- 6:35Speaker 2: For the uh for Trevor Larnick.
- 6:38Speaker 4: Yeah, Larnick, that's it.
- 6:39Speaker 5: Yeah, it was a one for one and the jill
- 6:41Speaker 5: was done and uh it was it was next And
- 6:44Speaker 5: I think right then, you know, Dana Brown knew, Okay,
- 6:47Speaker 5: I'm not gonna be not gonna be here much longer
- 6:49Speaker 5: if you if I'm getting my trades vetoed, you know
- 6:52Speaker 5: that they don't trust me anymore.

- 7:52Speaker 1: K twelve dot com slash foul. Bob, do you think
- 7:55Speaker 1: I mean, it's not like we're all out like, hey,
- 7:58Speaker 1: this is the best GM manager combo of all time,
- 8:01Speaker 1: you know, And sometimes we smash moves, sometimes we praise
- 8:03Speaker 1: the move.
- 8:04Speaker 2: It's just what you do. Right, We're an opinionated show here.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Do you think that we're like supporting the Dana Brown
- 8:11Speaker 1: side of this too much? We were talking earlier in
- 8:14Speaker 1: the show about how you know the Astros have had
- 8:16Speaker 1: picked stripped from them not long ago. Right, he takes
- 8:19Speaker 1: over the team a few years ago. They had just
- 8:21Speaker 1: signed a bray you and given money to Montero. It's
- 8:24Speaker 1: not like they certainly spend money, but they go up
- 8:27Speaker 1: against They treat the luxury tax as a salary cap.
- 8:30Speaker 1: They've never given a contract over one fifty one MILI,
- 8:32Speaker 1: which in baseball terms, that's not a lot. They you know,
- 8:35Speaker 1: the Hater deal was finally the first time they went
- 8:37Speaker 1: to a larger extent for a free agent.
- 8:39Speaker 2: So is this job one.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Of the most demanding in baseball and very difficult to
- 8:46Speaker 1: keep for long? Because Jim Crean's had a lot of
- 8:49Speaker 1: success and the expectations are so high.
- 8:53Speaker 4: I think the expectations are high, but they should be.
- 8:55Speaker 5: And they go up to the lecture cap every single
- 8:58Speaker 5: year in and say, okay, you got this much money
- 9:02Speaker 5: to spend with. And they made a lot of free
- 9:04Speaker 5: agent signings, and the winner for pitchers, and now I
- 9:08Speaker 5: want to say, six of them may not even being
- 9:10Speaker 5: the organization anymore. So the pitchers haven't worked out. The
- 9:14Speaker 5: pitcher for Japan hasn't worked out. So a lot of
- 9:17Speaker 5: the free signings just went billy up. I mean, really,
- 9:20Speaker 5: the best move they made was that Kyle Trucker trade,
- 9:23Speaker 5: you know, in getting Pretty's out of it and Cam
- 9:25Speaker 5: Smith out of it and let her pitcher as well,
- 9:28Speaker 5: So I think.
- 9:29Speaker 4: That was the best move that was made.
- 9:32Speaker 5: And the others remember talking about getting extensions and signing
- 9:35Speaker 5: guys to long term deals that that hasn't happened even
- 9:40Speaker 5: though it should have with guys like Hunter Brown and
- 9:42Speaker 5: those type of guys.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Do you think, I mean, if what you're saying is
- 9:47Speaker 1: true about Espada right where they're not going to extend
- 9:51Speaker 1: him for next year, is this a weird scenario where
- 9:54Speaker 1: he's managing right now a team that's in first place
- 9:57Speaker 1: and he's on a contract that expires that the end
- 10:00Speaker 1: of this season. Again, I'm still having trouble getting over
- 10:03Speaker 1: this part too, Like what if the Astros make the
- 10:04Speaker 1: World Series? Sorry, Joe wasn't good enough. We only gave
- 10:08Speaker 1: you like two starters, but.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Yeah, you figured it out. Hunter Brown missed most of
- 10:12Speaker 3: the year.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Like I don't know, I'm just having a hard time
- 10:16Speaker 1: conceptualizing how the expectations are here and who's going to
- 10:19Speaker 1: do a better job.
- 10:20Speaker 2: But anyway, what do you think?
- 10:22Speaker 4: Well, he still got Lopez on the staff as a
- 10:24Speaker 4: bench coach. Obviously he will love to have that job,
- 10:27Speaker 4: but he did with a WBC.
- 10:28Speaker 5: Team and Nezuela and hey, if the spotal leads a
- 10:32Speaker 5: team to the playoffs and even goes deeper in October,
- 10:36Speaker 5: then other teams will say, you know what, we're going
- 10:38Speaker 5: to fire our manager. Anyway, we'll hire this guy. At
- 10:41Speaker 5: least puts him in the conversation. Uh So, I think
- 10:44Speaker 5: if they do make the playoffs, at least it helps
- 10:47Speaker 5: his chances to get rehired by somebody else.
- 10:50Speaker 3: All right, Bob, you know they're not hiring Omar Lopez.
- 10:52Speaker 3: He'll just tell the team to f off, like he
- 10:53Speaker 3: did in the WBC when they called him and said, hey,
- 10:56Speaker 3: don't use plenty of two days in a row. He's like,
- 10:57Speaker 3: we're winning this thing.
- 10:59Speaker 7: We don't care.
- 11:02Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 11:03Speaker 5: And he has a job, and he's uh, definitely wants
- 11:05Speaker 5: a major league baseball job. He's made no secret of it.
- 11:08Speaker 5: So I'll be interesting to see if he's the next
- 11:10Speaker 5: gap for the job or not.
- 11:12Speaker 1: How do you measure the AL West right now, Bob?
- 11:15Speaker 1: Final A couple of questions here where we at? I mean, yes,
- 11:18Speaker 1: as you mentioned, it's not a good division, but somebody
- 11:21Speaker 1: will have to win it.
- 11:23Speaker 4: I mean, on.
- 11:24Speaker 5: Paper, it still should be Seattle Mariners. So unbelievable. How
- 11:27Speaker 5: poorly they played. When you're talking about disappointing teams in baseball,
- 11:30Speaker 5: you know they might have taken the cake now over
- 11:33Speaker 5: even over the Mets and uh Detroit Tigers can't see
- 11:36Speaker 5: Royals that sort of thing. So there's no reason a
- 11:39Speaker 5: rule they should win the division. But you know right now,
- 11:43Speaker 5: you know, might go with Texas. Uh, they're hanging around.
- 11:45Speaker 5: They should have been put away for dead a long
- 11:47Speaker 5: time ago, and they've done a great job there.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Uh.
- 11:52Speaker 5: I think where they're pitching, and they got some Vetroans
- 11:54Speaker 5: out lineup, you know, you kind of like their chances
- 11:57Speaker 5: if you had to put some money on somebody.
- 12:00Speaker 2: My last one.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Do you think that a move like this sets a
- 12:04Speaker 1: tone for the rest of the sport where if you're
- 12:07Speaker 1: looking at your team and you underperformed it like damn,
- 12:09Speaker 1: I mean they fired Brown and they might not let
- 12:13Speaker 1: a spot to come back. I mean, look at a
- 12:15Speaker 1: team like the Orioles, disappointing right on the GM side,
- 12:19Speaker 1: look at a team like the Mariners this year. Do
- 12:22Speaker 1: you think that we could have more moves to come?
- 12:24Speaker 1: I mean we've already had what two others in the
- 12:26Speaker 1: Al West, the A's parted ways or fired David Forrest
- 12:30Speaker 1: and the Angels fired perrimanation.
- 12:34Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm trying a few gms. They don't remember any
- 12:36Speaker 4: time my three.
- 12:37Speaker 5: Gms got fired from the same division in the middle
- 12:40Speaker 5: of the summer. It was amazing. Yeah, I think Seattle,
- 12:42Speaker 5: I think some jobs will be on the line if
- 12:44Speaker 5: they don't make the playoffs. For sure. I think Dan Wilson,
- 12:47Speaker 5: the manager's got to be in the hot seat. Expectations
- 12:50Speaker 5: were high there, I think going to the season, or
- 12:53Speaker 5: at least in spring trending, you're thinking, Okay, who's going
- 12:55Speaker 5: to come on the America League this year?
- 12:57Speaker 4: It's give to Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners. Teams are
- 13:00Speaker 4: that good and to be whatever they are now.
- 13:02Speaker 5: But six seven games, eight games below five hundred is
- 13:06Speaker 5: almost unacceptable with the talent on that team. They're certainly underperforming.
- 13:11Speaker 5: So remember two of these guys too, when the last
- 13:13Speaker 5: year's contracts. Dana Brown last year, Perrymnesian was last year
- 13:18Speaker 5: as well, and David the Forest was last year as
- 13:20Speaker 5: well and didn't really want to go to Las Vegas
- 13:23Speaker 5: anyway in the year. So you know, uh, well, three
- 13:26Speaker 5: guys been the last year of contract. I think it's
- 13:29Speaker 5: different from firing a guy if we got a couple
- 13:31Speaker 5: of years left, all.
- 13:33Speaker 3: Right, duck never works, Bob. Now, I mean, do we
- 13:36Speaker 3: think Kurtsuzuki is going to be back in Anaheim after
- 13:38Speaker 3: he signed that long term one year deal.
- 13:43Speaker 5: By now, I think this was the alex uh decision
- 13:46Speaker 5: and he he liked.
- 13:48Speaker 4: What he saw so far after talking to Suzuki.
- 13:50Speaker 5: It'd be interesting because people think that Suzuki has a
- 13:52Speaker 5: chance to be a good manager if given a chance.
- 13:55Speaker 4: We'll see if he see if he gets that chance.
- 13:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I have a great chance to be
- 13:59Speaker 3: a manager.
- 14:00Speaker 6: To Bob, if someone would hire me, but.
- 14:06Speaker 2: I'd pay to watch that. I'd watch that all Bob.
- 14:11Speaker 5: That guaranty if a j was managing the Diamondbacks, can
- 14:15Speaker 5: tell he wouldn't be putting his arms around. Could tell
- 14:18Speaker 5: Marte and saying, hey, everything's fine, ya come back and
- 14:22Speaker 5: have a two week vacation.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Three days will be paid, but the others will be paid.
- 14:25Speaker 3: Yeah, enjoy your enjoy your Greek Greek cruise. Could tell
- 14:28Speaker 3: in the middle of August it'd be awesome. Caribbean vacation
- 14:31Speaker 3: cost of a comprom wherever you want to know.
- 14:33Speaker 1: I think there's a better chance a j would have
- 14:36Speaker 1: just gotten ejected in that game, driven to the casino
- 14:38Speaker 1: and been like, hey bro, what's going on?
- 14:40Speaker 2: Couldn't reach you for a week.
- 14:42Speaker 3: We pay for my next hand, can tell I appreciate it.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Calls. Let's chat, Bob, good stuff. Thank you for hopping
- 14:50Speaker 2: on with us.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Last minute here breaking news, so I wanted to get
- 14:53Speaker 1: the latest from you.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Appreciate it all right, My pleasure, see you guys.
- 14:58Speaker 1: It's time to remind every everyone why baseball is glorious,
- 15:02Speaker 1: especially nowadays where you could think your team is out
- 15:05Speaker 1: of it, but they might be back in it again.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Let me introduce you to the American League Wild Card
- 15:10Speaker 1: KP and let's tell everyone why they might need to
- 15:12Speaker 1: head back to Sea Geek grab some more tickets for
- 15:15Speaker 1: what is a playoff race before the playoffs actually begin.
- 15:20Speaker 8: Well, speaking about being out of it, I'm an American
- 15:22Speaker 8: League East guy, and I'm talking to you Toronto fans.
- 15:25Speaker 8: I'm talking to you Baltimore fans. A couple of weeks ago,
- 15:28Speaker 8: probably not a reason to come out of the games.
- 15:30Speaker 8: Look at the standings right now. Both of you teams

- 16:03Speaker 1: The Athletic covers the Yankees, and we have so much
- 16:06Speaker 1: to get to Brendan, thanks for joining us.
- 16:08Speaker 2: I think we should start with Jihn.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Carlo stand because that's the news that looks like it'll
- 16:14Speaker 1: toward the rest.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Of the season for him individually.
- 16:16Speaker 1: So if you don't mind what happened there, why can't
- 16:19Speaker 1: someone at that age run the bases like is I know,
- 16:23Speaker 1: I don't want to sound too harsh, but like is
- 16:26Speaker 1: his body completely broken down that he shouldn't even try
- 16:29Speaker 1: to come back next year for one last season on
- 16:32Speaker 1: his current deal.
- 16:34Speaker 7: No, he should absolutely try to come back next season,
- 16:37Speaker 7: And thank you guys for having me on. Look. John
- 16:39Speaker 7: Carlos Stanton is a proud veteran. He's someone who's accomplished
- 16:43Speaker 7: a lot in this game. He's someone who thinks that
- 16:46Speaker 7: he's got more in the tank.
- 16:47Speaker 5: Right.
- 16:48Speaker 7: He wouldn't be out here trying to get back on
- 16:50Speaker 7: the field if he didn't think he could get back
- 16:52Speaker 7: on the field, if he didn't want to get back
- 16:53Speaker 7: on the field. He's got a lot to play for.
- 16:56Speaker 7: You know, the Yankees, he's real respected in that clubhouse.
- 17:00Speaker 7: Just last season, he was, you know, kind of getting
- 17:03Speaker 7: into his teammates to perform better, to perform up to
- 17:06Speaker 7: their standards in a closed door meeting in their clubhouse
- 17:11Speaker 7: in Texas. He also, you know, just is a forty
- 17:14Speaker 7: home runs shy of five hundred. I mean, he's got
- 17:17Speaker 7: a lot to play for. There's still one more year
- 17:19Speaker 7: left on his deal. And if I'm John Carlos Day
- 17:22Speaker 7: and I try to keep playing.
- 17:25Speaker 3: Okay, what was it? It was one calf and then
- 17:27Speaker 3: he hurt the other calf because we saw videos of
- 17:29Speaker 3: him running. I know Aaron Boone got angry when he
- 17:32Speaker 3: was asked about when with Stanton coming back? Right, So
- 17:34Speaker 3: what was it? He was just running and I mean
- 17:37Speaker 3: the videos I saw of him, he I guess that
- 17:39Speaker 3: was full speed, because we've all seen the memes and
- 17:41Speaker 3: I love John Carloston, I think he's a stud, but
- 17:43Speaker 3: we've seen the memes of how slow he is. So
- 17:46Speaker 3: he just couldn't get up to full speed and then
- 17:47Speaker 3: when he tried, he popped the other calf.
- 17:51Speaker 7: Yeah, look it goes without saying. John Carlos, Dan and
- 17:53Speaker 7: Ray Dude enjoyed covering him throughout the years. We've all tried.
- 17:57Speaker 7: We've all seen him trying to run these days, it's
- 18:00Speaker 7: not a run so much as it is a trot.
- 18:02Speaker 7: My understanding is that he was running the basis at
- 18:05Speaker 7: Yankee Stadium trying to get around and during that trod
- 18:11Speaker 7: like one of his legs, his left leg, the new
- 18:13Speaker 7: strained calf, gave out on him and he went down.
- 18:17Speaker 7: And that is a new development. In these previous strains
- 18:21Speaker 7: of his right calf, he had never fallen, And for
- 18:25Speaker 7: Aaron Boon to mention that he fell within the injury
- 18:30Speaker 7: update shows the significance, right, because you don't include that
- 18:34Speaker 7: detail if you don't think it's a big deal. So
- 18:36Speaker 7: giohn Carlo's legs are just not letting them get back
- 18:40Speaker 7: on the field. But look, if you're him, if you're
- 18:43Speaker 7: the Yankees. You value his leadership, you value the gravitas
- 18:48Speaker 7: he brings, and you value his work ethic and you
- 18:51Speaker 7: want him in that clubhouse. You want him in those
- 18:53Speaker 7: hairs meetings, and you want to give him one last
- 18:55Speaker 7: full off season to see what he can do, to
- 18:58Speaker 7: see if he can get a straight to see what
- 18:59Speaker 7: he looks like next opening day, and see if you're
- 19:02Speaker 7: going to have John Carlos stan I'm back one more time.
- 19:07Speaker 3: Okay, that's fair, that's fair. Let's move on from him.
- 19:10Speaker 3: Let's actually talk about someone that just came back, Cody Bellinger.
- 19:13Speaker 3: He's back, right, Cody's back. What does he bring to
- 19:15Speaker 3: the table for the Yankees offense, especially until if we
- 19:18Speaker 3: ever see Judge again this year?
- 19:21Speaker 7: Well, real quick, probably the best fielding left fielder in
- 19:24Speaker 7: the game, right, you know, the range, just knows what
- 19:27Speaker 7: he's doing out there, and Yankee Stadium left field probably
- 19:30Speaker 7: one of the toughest left fields in baseball. When it
- 19:33Speaker 7: comes to the offense, he's a low strikeout guy, a
- 19:36Speaker 7: high contact guy, someone who's going to pepper that short
- 19:39Speaker 7: porch at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees need any offense they
- 19:43Speaker 7: can get. They've been playing hockey games lately, you know,
- 19:47Speaker 7: two to three, three to four, five to three. They
- 19:51Speaker 7: need athleticism, they need basketball skills, they need someone in
- 19:55Speaker 7: the lineup who's confident, who's been there before, and who's
- 19:57Speaker 7: going to get it done. That's Cody Bellan, you know.
- 20:01Speaker 7: And also this allows Spencer Jones to shift over to
- 20:04Speaker 7: right field where he can be more comfortable, allows them
- 20:08Speaker 7: to maybe split time with Elliott Ramos in right field
- 20:11Speaker 7: where they can get him in against lefties. Though Jones
- 20:13Speaker 7: has been great against left handers, I actually think he
- 20:15Speaker 7: should get more bats against left handers. This just makes
- 20:17Speaker 7: their lineup deeper, makes their defense better, and supports that
- 20:21Speaker 7: pitching staff that's been so great for them.
- 20:24Speaker 9: Well, I might not agree with you that Yankee Stadium
- 20:26Speaker 9: has the hardest left field when you got Houston and
- 20:28Speaker 9: Boston and some of these other ones with some weirder
- 20:30Speaker 9: outfield walls and just I mean, what's hard about it
- 20:32Speaker 9: that it's so close to the field Pittsburgh and stuff
- 20:36Speaker 9: like that. But are you worried at all? Because it's
- 20:38Speaker 9: kind of shaping out this Yankees team and they're kind
- 20:41Speaker 9: of in the same position they've been in these last
- 20:43Speaker 9: couple of years. Where they hit a lot of home
- 20:45Speaker 9: runs and they have very good maybe one of the
- 20:46Speaker 9: lowest starting pitchers eras, But it's that contact that you're
- 20:49Speaker 9: talking about with Cody Bellinger, where it's kind of their
- 20:52Speaker 9: samemo where they just don't hit for high enough average
- 20:54Speaker 9: and if Judge or if standing aren't putting the ball
- 20:56Speaker 9: out of the ballpark in the playoffs, they can kind
- 20:58Speaker 9: of beat beat. Are you worried that that's kind of
- 21:00Speaker 9: what's happening or what is different from this year than
- 21:02Speaker 9: these years past?
- 21:04Speaker 7: Well, first, Jason, I want to thank you for getting
- 21:06Speaker 7: my email on matching our outfits today that that's.
- 21:10Speaker 9: You look great. You look great.
- 21:13Speaker 7: Same. So, look, you're worried about this offense having too
- 21:17Speaker 7: much strikeouts, too many strikeouts. You're you're worried about this
- 21:21Speaker 7: offense not performing well against high level pitching that you
- 21:25Speaker 7: tend to face in the postseason. You worry about this
- 21:27Speaker 7: offense not carrying the pitching staff that has carried it
- 21:31Speaker 7: all season without Aaron Judge. Really, guys, all this comes
- 21:35Speaker 7: down to is Aaron Judge. This lineup is this lineup
- 21:39Speaker 7: can get it done. This lineup chem school runs. But man,
- 21:43Speaker 7: if they don't get Aaron Judge back. And if they
- 21:44Speaker 7: don't get the Aaron Judge back, like you know, capital letters,
- 21:47Speaker 7: Aaron Judge back, they're gonna be in rough shape. So
- 21:50Speaker 7: I think a lot of this hinges on Aaron Judge.
- 21:53Speaker 7: I think Trent Brisham can pop one at any time.
- 21:56Speaker 7: Ben Rice, We've seen him go on and run this season.
- 21:58Speaker 7: Cody Bellinger, you like what Luiska Sea Junior brings to,
- 22:02Speaker 7: you know, first base at Yankee Stadium, there's a lot
- 22:05Speaker 7: of potential there, But you need Aaron Judge, you need
- 22:07Speaker 7: the Yankees captain and Jason to your point that this
- 22:10Speaker 7: offense really will go as far as Aaron Judge goes.
- 22:13Speaker 7: But back to left field real quick. At Yankee Stadium,
- 22:16Speaker 7: from what I'm told, it's just gigantic and that sudden
- 22:19Speaker 7: during day games in particular, as it goes down throughout
- 22:22Speaker 7: the day, could really be a B word. So that's
- 22:25Speaker 7: my understanding what makes the right left field the Yankee
- 22:27Speaker 7: Stadium pretty rough.
- 22:29Speaker 3: And then they make these things called sunglasses that you
- 22:31Speaker 3: can put on and they help with the sun. I'm
- 22:33Speaker 3: just throwing that out there. They make these cool things.
- 22:36Speaker 3: There's sunglasses. You know, if you haven't bought them. There's
- 22:38Speaker 3: a lot of companies that sell them. You can put
- 22:41Speaker 3: them on. They even make these ones. When the ball
- 22:42Speaker 3: goes up, you can flip them down and it makes
- 22:44Speaker 3: the sun. I mean, it's amazing how far we've come
- 22:47Speaker 3: in the last I don't know, one hundred and fifty
- 22:49Speaker 3: years or so with these things called sunglasses. And also
- 22:52Speaker 3: what I want to know you talk about Aaron Judge,
- 22:54Speaker 3: is Aaron Judge. If Aaron Judge does come back, which again,
- 22:58Speaker 3: you know we started hitting off a tee and all
- 23:00Speaker 3: this stuff, but he's still got a ways to go,
- 23:02Speaker 3: you know, more imaging. I'm sure scheduled for this week
- 23:05Speaker 3: and next week and the week after, right, But if
- 23:08Speaker 3: he comes back and he goes, oh, for one, will
- 23:10Speaker 3: Yankee fans boo them in the playoff?
- 23:14Speaker 7: Hope not?
- 23:15Speaker 4: But in the playoffs?
- 23:17Speaker 7: So look, actually, you know that's actually a really good point, right,
- 23:23Speaker 7: Aaron has to ask himself. He doesn't have to ask
- 23:26Speaker 7: himself this. He's the team captain. If he can play,
- 23:29Speaker 7: he has to be on the field, he has to
- 23:30Speaker 7: be in the batter's box, he has to give it
- 23:31Speaker 7: a chance. But fans have to ask themselves. Is Aaron
- 23:36Speaker 7: potentially setting himself up for failure. You know, there have
- 23:41Speaker 7: been some difficult postseasons for him in the past. There's
- 23:44Speaker 7: been really good ones like last year, and for him
- 23:46Speaker 7: to take off months and then come back potentially not healed,
- 23:51Speaker 7: it's potentially behind in terms of hitting, major league pitching.
- 23:56Speaker 7: Is he putting himself behind the eight ball and just
- 23:58Speaker 7: you know, furthering that narrative as we like to call it,
- 24:02Speaker 7: that he doesn't perform well in the postseason. So that's
- 24:05Speaker 7: a that's a rough spot to be in if you're
- 24:07Speaker 7: Aaron Judge. But also if you're Aaron Judge, you know
- 24:09Speaker 7: that you don't care about all that. You're the Yankees captain.
- 24:12Speaker 7: You want to win, you want a World Series, and
- 24:14Speaker 7: you're going to do put yourself out there, whether you're
- 24:16Speaker 7: at seventy five, fifty percent, anything that you can do.
- 24:22Speaker 6: One of the things that I wasn't very good at, well,
- 24:25Speaker 6: it's playing major league baseball. One of the things that
- 24:27Speaker 6: I'm really good at is sweating. Even now when I'm
- 24:30Speaker 6: not playing, I need hydration. I need to make sure
- 24:34Speaker 6: it's convenient.
- 24:36Speaker 2: That's why I choose.

- 25:13Speaker 1: been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product
- 25:15Speaker 1: is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
- 25:20Speaker 3: Okay, let me clarify something for you right now, Brendan,
- 25:22Speaker 3: Aaron Judge, if he's healthy, will be out there. He
- 25:24Speaker 3: doesn't give a crap about that. So I just want
- 25:27Speaker 3: to make that clear right now, that Aaron Judge will
- 25:30Speaker 3: be out there. And Aaron Judge is awesome, dude, he's
- 25:32Speaker 3: the captain. But he would never think about and say,
- 25:35Speaker 3: now there some other players out there that might make
- 25:38Speaker 3: other decisions and go, you know, and not show up
- 25:41Speaker 3: to their team and stuff like that. But if Aaron
- 25:42Speaker 3: Judge has the opportunity to play, if it's fifty percent
- 25:45Speaker 3: sixty percent, if he feels like he could be on
- 25:47Speaker 3: the field, Aaron Judges can be out there.
- 25:50Speaker 7: And that's and that's why I stop myself. It's like,
- 25:51Speaker 7: look that that that is a thing. But that's not
- 25:54Speaker 7: a thing that Aaron Judge is gonna care about. That's
- 25:55Speaker 7: the thing that fans are going to you know, if
- 25:57Speaker 7: he's over one of the postseason, like you said, boot him,
- 26:00Speaker 7: they need to understand that this guy is coming back.
- 26:03Speaker 7: Whatever he can do, he's gonna do.
- 26:06Speaker 3: Brandon, what about George Lombard three errs last three games.
- 26:08Speaker 3: I think it is his defense is supposed to be amazing. Offensively,
- 26:12Speaker 3: he got off to a good start, which George Lombard
- 26:15Speaker 3: because is he gonna be a superstar? Like everyone every
- 26:19Speaker 3: Yankee fan thought Anthony Volpi was gonna be. Is he
- 26:21Speaker 3: gonna be a good player? What's the what's the real
- 26:24Speaker 3: feeling behind the scenes, not just the I'm a fan.
- 26:27Speaker 3: He hit a home run his first game, He's made
- 26:29Speaker 3: some amazing players. What's the real feeling in the Yankees.
- 26:33Speaker 7: So, look, I wrote a story about George today, talking
- 26:35Speaker 7: to a bunch of people around the Yankees, people who
- 26:37Speaker 7: have been around George, who've seen him every day going
- 26:41Speaker 7: back to spring training, going through Double A through Triple A.
- 26:44Speaker 7: They talk about him being a sponge. They talk about
- 26:47Speaker 7: him wanting to get better, his desire to get better,
- 26:49Speaker 7: and this you know, confidence which which he carries himself. Now,
- 26:53Speaker 7: were we saying the same thing about Anthony Bolpi three
- 26:56Speaker 7: years ago? We weren't not saying that.
- 26:58Speaker 4: Right.
- 26:59Speaker 7: For Anthony, the desire is always there, the work ethic
- 27:02Speaker 7: was always there. With George, he really looks the part.
- 27:06Speaker 5: You know.
- 27:07Speaker 7: It's it's the six foot two whatever he is at shortstop.
- 27:10Speaker 7: It's the wiry frame, it's the explosion, it's the arm.
- 27:14Speaker 7: This guy. You look at him and you say, hey,
- 27:16Speaker 7: that's what shortstop looks like. So when it comes to
- 27:19Speaker 7: expectations for him, I'm hoping that the Yankees fan base
- 27:23Speaker 7: keeps them low, understanding that he's twenty one years old.
- 27:26Speaker 7: I mean, geez, what were you guys doing when you're
- 27:27Speaker 7: twenty one years old? Not you guys, the fans, You
- 27:30Speaker 7: know I wasn't playing the legs age twenty.
- 27:32Speaker 3: One, playing in the big leagues.
- 27:33Speaker 7: Brennan just saying, I feel you, but you know, it's
- 27:37Speaker 7: just it's tough, right, And I think he has all
- 27:40Speaker 7: the potential, he has all the ability. It's just a
- 27:43Speaker 7: matter of growth and whether he's going to be given
- 27:46Speaker 7: that time to grow. We saw Anthony Volpi was given
- 27:48Speaker 7: several years, So George Lombard should expect that same treatment,
- 27:52Speaker 7: provided he's putting in the work every day, which I
- 27:54Speaker 7: have no doubt that he will.
- 27:56Speaker 3: That's funny because the Yankees fans are very known to
- 27:58Speaker 3: be very calm and steady. I mean, they didn't put
- 28:00Speaker 3: any expectations on Anthony Wolpey, so why would they do
- 28:03Speaker 3: that to George Lombard. I mean Spencer Deminguez, I mean
- 28:07Speaker 3: naming Yankees prospect Austin Wells, name one and find me
- 28:11Speaker 3: one where they haven't overhyped him to the point where
- 28:13Speaker 3: if he doesn't come up and be Aaron Judge or like.
- 28:16Speaker 6: Get him out of here right now.
- 28:19Speaker 7: Yeah, everyone's looking for the next Derek Jeters. Everyone wants
- 28:21Speaker 7: the next Robinson Cano that the next Core four. When
- 28:26Speaker 7: is not going to happen. Who the heck knows? Is
- 28:28Speaker 7: it going to be Spencer Jones, George Lombard, Ben Rice
- 28:33Speaker 7: Austin Wells, Well, it wasn't Glaber Torrez, Clint Fraser, uh
- 28:38Speaker 7: Justice Sheffield and whoever else, Miguel Anduhar. So the chances
- 28:43Speaker 7: are that this is not the next Core four we're
- 28:45Speaker 7: looking at, but we are looking at a supremely talented
- 28:48Speaker 7: player at shortstop who just needs to grow into his
- 28:50Speaker 7: offensive game.
- 28:52Speaker 9: Let's turn the attention to pitching a little bit. I know,
- 28:54Speaker 9: with weather's going down a little bit, they're gonna have
- 28:57Speaker 9: some some questions that need answering. And where are they
- 28:59Speaker 9: going to turn to find some starting pitcher? Are they
- 29:01Speaker 9: going to go to Lucas Gill or are they going
- 29:03Speaker 9: to go to Luis gi Excuse me? Are they going
- 29:05Speaker 9: to go to stretch out Ryan Yarborough back to that
- 29:07Speaker 9: kind of spot start that he used to do back
- 29:09Speaker 9: in Tampa and stuff like that. What do you think
- 29:11Speaker 9: is theirn answer to these with not many off days
- 29:13Speaker 9: left this year.
- 29:14Speaker 7: Well, they actually have a good amount of off days
- 29:17Speaker 7: for the month, for the calendar month, right like they
- 29:19Speaker 7: have one off day like every week, which is which
- 29:20Speaker 7: is kind of nice that being so they have two
- 29:23Speaker 7: more yeah, but they also have two more double headers,
- 29:27Speaker 7: So what are you going to do there? They're kind
- 29:30Speaker 7: of up against it. Their best pitching prospect is Elmer Rodriguez.
- 29:35Speaker 7: He's already been called up three times and you're bumping
- 29:38Speaker 7: up against that five call up limit. So they may
- 29:41Speaker 7: only be open to calling him up in a straight
- 29:44Speaker 7: call up situation one more time the rest of the season,
- 29:47Speaker 7: and then maybe drop him in for those double headers
- 29:49Speaker 7: where he can be the twenty seventh man or twenty
- 29:52Speaker 7: ninth man in September, right, But until then, they'll cover
- 29:56Speaker 7: it with Yarborough, they'll cover it with Brendan Beck, they'll
- 30:00Speaker 7: cover it with openers. I think that you're not going
- 30:03Speaker 7: to see them pull someone off the scrap heap. They
- 30:05Speaker 7: do have arms at Triple A that you know they
- 30:08Speaker 7: can use him for one or two innings for an opener,
- 30:10Speaker 7: but it's really just piecing it together the rest of
- 30:13Speaker 7: the way, and then when Ryan Weathers gets back, it's
- 30:15Speaker 7: straight to the bullpen. It's straight gas and it's that
- 30:18Speaker 7: left handed power lefty that the Yankees haven't had all
- 30:21Speaker 7: season down the bullpen.
- 30:23Speaker 9: I like that before we let you go one more
- 30:25Speaker 9: quick question because I saw this, we posted your tweet
- 30:27Speaker 9: about weathers where there's no damage. There's no UCL damage,
- 30:30Speaker 9: no structural damage, nothing is showing up. Is it just
- 30:33Speaker 9: soreness or did the Yankees know what it is? His
- 30:35Speaker 9: weathers even know what it is? He said, it happened
- 30:36Speaker 9: in Miami before. But I mean, if nothing's showing up,
- 30:39Speaker 9: what's the diagnosis here?
- 30:43Speaker 7: Forearm lextra stream He said that. You know, just in
- 30:48Speaker 7: a conversation with him yesterday, he said that he kind
- 30:51Speaker 7: of fielded the bunt that happened prior to the Dazz
- 30:55Speaker 7: cameron at that he fielded it and threw it kind
- 30:58Speaker 7: of funky, came out of his hand weird, the grip weird.
- 31:00Speaker 7: So when he went into that Dazz camera at bat,
- 31:02Speaker 7: that's when he started feeling something in the forearm. So
- 31:05Speaker 7: that's when he said, hey, you know what, let's be
- 31:06Speaker 7: smart here. Let's he said, he could pitch through it,
- 31:08Speaker 7: but let's not big things worse because typically it was
- 31:12Speaker 7: forearm UCL. Right, So as for now, he says it's
- 31:16Speaker 7: a lower grade strain of the flex are tended than
- 31:20Speaker 7: he had last year. And remember last year it took
- 31:22Speaker 7: him a month and a half to get back from
- 31:24Speaker 7: that flexure strain. But it was a more severe strain,
- 31:27Speaker 7: he said, and he was building up as a starting pitcher.
- 31:30Speaker 7: This is a less severe strain, and he's building up
- 31:32Speaker 7: as a reliever. Nine to nine percent short. So someone
- 31:35Speaker 7: with the Yankees told me that they think Weathers will
- 31:38Speaker 7: be fine and definitely will pitch again this season.
- 31:42Speaker 1: Hey, Brandon, great info, man, Hope you enjoyed it. Yeah,

- 31:49Speaker 7: I'm sorry about that, guys. That's like anytime he.
- 31:52Speaker 2: Had the wrong number.
- 31:55Speaker 1: I feel bad for the whoever the guy that was
- 31:58Speaker 1: or girl that was getting the notes from us. Hey,
- 32:00Speaker 1: can you come on to talk Yankees? And they're like what,
- 32:02Speaker 1: I'm like, what do you want from me?
