The Battery and the Haunted Heart of Charleston

Stand at the southern tip of the Charleston peninsula at dusk, where the seawall curves to meet the Ashley and Cooper Rivers and the city behind you seems to recede into another century. The palmetto trees along the promenade sway in the salt wind off the harbor, and the great antebellum houses along South Battery Street present their piazzas and their shuttered windows to the water with the composed dignity of families who have survived catastrophe and chosen not to discuss it. The Battery is one of the most photographed places in South Carolina.
