- 0:23Speaker 1: our guinea pig. Good morning, Doug.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Good morning. I'll gladly take the job here.
- 0:29Speaker 3: And I'll tell you right out of the gate, thank
- 0:31Speaker 3: you for getting up this early West Coast time, because
- 0:34Speaker 3: I know that's a bitch, especially for.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Yesterday.
- 0:39Speaker 4: Yesterday, my manager's like, okay, check your email, that's your
- 0:42Speaker 4: repressed for tomorrow.
- 0:43Speaker 2: And I'm like seven am, right right on camera, like,
- 0:48Speaker 2: oh my god, what are we doing here?
- 0:49Speaker 1: Who are these a holes? Are they worth talking to? Uh?
- 0:53Speaker 1: You have kids though?
- 0:54Speaker 5: Right?
- 0:55Speaker 2: Oh?
- 0:55Speaker 1: School probably hasn't started there yet. How's it?
- 0:58Speaker 4: I got, well, what is it? What's Thursday? About one
- 1:01Speaker 4: week left? And then I got both my kids go
- 1:03Speaker 4: back to school?
- 1:04Speaker 1: They all started here this past Monday and Tuesday. So
- 1:07Speaker 1: it's school buses and school stops and or you know,
- 1:10Speaker 1: but stops in.
- 1:12Speaker 3: The local news stations, doesn't countdown cloth every year. I
- 1:16Speaker 3: would be so pissed off if I was a little
- 1:19Speaker 3: kid and walked by by my parents watching the news.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Ships just trauma.
- 1:25Speaker 4: It's just trauma inducing, right, like, truly, let them have,
- 1:29Speaker 4: let them have the summer, let them have it.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Hey, did you like the first day of school? When
- 1:33Speaker 1: we were back going back to school, we were talking
- 1:35Speaker 1: about this earlier in the week.
- 1:37Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:38Speaker 4: First first off, I don't remember ever ever starting school
- 1:43Speaker 4: before September. Yeah, it wasn't a thing. And I always
- 1:47Speaker 4: taught to my kids and they're like, well, how did
- 1:49Speaker 4: it change? But they also get a lot more days
- 1:51Speaker 4: off during the year than I do.
- 1:52Speaker 5: That is I did.
- 1:53Speaker 1: It's true.
- 1:54Speaker 5: How old are you?
- 1:55Speaker 2: It almost seems weird, but I.
- 1:59Speaker 4: Have I have as soon to be sixteen year old
- 2:01Speaker 4: daughter and I soon be thirteen year old son skateboard.
- 2:04Speaker 5: Neither of them.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Uh, my son does well, They've done a both a
- 2:09Speaker 2: little bit of skateboarding.
- 2:10Speaker 4: That was more of my thing. He's more into two
- 2:12Speaker 4: bikes and e bikes. And she's in baseball and she's
- 2:16Speaker 4: a softball player.
- 2:18Speaker 2: And you know, soon to be driver.
- 2:21Speaker 1: So as a dad, where are you at on this
- 2:24Speaker 1: whole e bike craze that everybody's dealing with? Now, we're
- 2:26Speaker 1: scourges some people would call it.
- 2:29Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm I'm that guy who kind of there's some
- 2:34Speaker 4: parents out here that are just you know, shaking their
- 2:38Speaker 4: fists at clouds, you know what I mean.
- 2:41Speaker 2: And then and then some have no I.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Don't want to say control, but I feel like, no
- 2:48Speaker 4: say in their kids, uh activities.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I used to bike all around. I used to skate everywhere.
- 2:54Speaker 2: And we live.
- 2:56Speaker 4: In the same area that I grew up, Like, my
- 2:58Speaker 4: kids go to all the same schools that I went to.
- 3:01Speaker 4: So I remember like the activity of the moment for
- 3:05Speaker 4: my time where all the parents were, you know, and
- 3:08Speaker 4: for me it was skating.
- 3:09Speaker 2: I was just a little skate punk.
- 3:11Speaker 4: And then I remember skating to school and getting yelled
- 3:15Speaker 4: at by people because I was skating in the middle
- 3:17Speaker 4: of the street, and then the skateboard is getting banned,
- 3:20Speaker 4: and then going down to the stores, and then eventually
- 3:23Speaker 4: them saying you can't skate here either, Like and I'm
- 3:26Speaker 4: just watching it happen again with e bike riders. You know, Grant, dude,
- 3:30Speaker 4: I understand the danger. I absolutely understand the data. I'm
- 3:34Speaker 4: not trying to like poop poo that at all, but
- 3:36Speaker 4: I just you know, my my son's got a e bike.
- 3:38Speaker 2: It goes faster than it should. I tell them, you
- 3:41Speaker 2: can't be.
- 3:41Speaker 4: You can't be that dude, you know, riding in the
- 3:45Speaker 4: middle street doing wheelies and and you know, hold up
- 3:48Speaker 4: traffic and being reckless. And I don't want you to
- 3:50Speaker 4: be one of those guys that runs out, like rides
- 3:52Speaker 4: out in a group of like fifty guys. You know,
- 3:54Speaker 4: well those guys that you that you you know, granted
- 3:57Speaker 4: they look cool and everything, those guys are ruining it
- 4:02Speaker 4: for you who just want to have this cool thing,
- 4:04Speaker 4: you know, because the way they act is making it
- 4:08Speaker 4: you know, every it annoys everybody.
- 4:10Speaker 2: So so just be careful. You know.
- 4:13Speaker 4: I'm one of those parents like like, look, I'm going
- 4:15Speaker 4: to I trust you with the responsibility and if you
- 4:19Speaker 4: if you f it up, you know, you f it up,
- 4:21Speaker 4: and hopefully it's not a hospital f up.
- 4:24Speaker 5: Don't be like like I was when I was a
- 4:26Speaker 5: kid on my skateboard.
- 4:26Speaker 3: It's funny that your kids go to the same schools
- 4:29Speaker 3: as you, because I grew up right where I live too,
- 4:32Speaker 3: been here my whole life.
- 4:33Speaker 2: And my we're total losers.
- 4:36Speaker 5: You guys live.
- 4:37Speaker 1: In what I refer to as zone of operations. Do
- 4:41Speaker 1: you just your homebodies? You stay there, that's where your
- 4:43Speaker 1: friends and family are, and there's nothing wrong with that. Well,
- 4:47Speaker 1: but you don't see that a lot anymore.
- 4:49Speaker 5: But you live in a cool area. And we live
- 4:51Speaker 5: in a cool area. I mean I live It's not Orlando, Florida,
- 4:55Speaker 5: Mickey Mouse.
- 4:56Speaker 3: And we live in a subset called Maitland and winter Park,
- 5:00Speaker 3: and they're really beautiful towns. It's like, I have the
- 5:03Speaker 3: beach fifty minutes away, I've got everything close.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Why leave, you know?
- 5:09Speaker 4: And you have you have this same Yeah, dude, yeah,
- 5:12Speaker 4: I we.
- 5:15Speaker 2: I used to hear all the time or not.
- 5:17Speaker 4: I but I really noticed how nobody, nobody's kids went
- 5:22Speaker 4: to the same school as them, you know, like and
- 5:24Speaker 4: I always heard that when I was younger. It was
- 5:25Speaker 4: more of a East Coast thing where where there were
- 5:27Speaker 4: multi generational houses, you know, where families would.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Stay in one area. And there's a lot of obviously
- 5:32Speaker 2: there's a lot of transplants out here.
- 5:35Speaker 4: And I remember in high school my history teacher was retiring.
- 5:43Speaker 4: It was his last year, and it was his last class.
- 5:45Speaker 4: It wasn't even was it was the last class of
- 5:47Speaker 4: the day. So he was like done done, you know,
- 5:49Speaker 4: and he was he was a funny He was a
- 5:51Speaker 4: funny guy. And he you know, the class is just
- 5:56Speaker 4: doing stupid ship or whatever, just you know, And I
- 5:59Speaker 4: remember he got everyone's attention and kind of said, he
- 6:05Speaker 4: you know, this is gonna suck to say, you guys,
- 6:08Speaker 4: but probably ninety five percent of you guys will not
- 6:12Speaker 4: make enough money to live where your parents live right now,
- 6:15Speaker 4: So enjoy it, you know, Like, I mean, that's not
- 6:19Speaker 4: that's not part of the lesson plan. And that's like
- 6:22Speaker 4: the biggest thing I took from high school. This one
- 6:25Speaker 4: sentence my teacher, while retiring said, and I was like,
- 6:29Speaker 4: oh my god, I kind of like it here. This
- 6:32Speaker 4: is like I I wasn't one of those kids, because
- 6:35Speaker 4: it's very it's very normal and cool for everyone in
- 6:40Speaker 4: high school to say their town sucks and they want
- 6:42Speaker 4: to get out of there, you know, like that's that's
- 6:44Speaker 4: the noise.
- 6:45Speaker 2: I get it.
- 6:45Speaker 4: It's like human, it's human behavior. But I wasn't one
- 6:49Speaker 4: of them, and my friends weren't one of them. We're
- 6:51Speaker 4: like dude, we kind of really like it here. Like
- 6:53Speaker 4: you said, we're about nine miles from Malibu, you know,
- 6:56Speaker 4: like we could go to the beach anytime we want.
- 6:58Speaker 2: We're forty.
- 7:00Speaker 4: It's from Hollywood to go see shows, and and uh,
- 7:03Speaker 4: you know, there's mountains and and I.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Just had a really good childhood growing up, and that
- 7:07Speaker 2: stuck with me.
- 7:08Speaker 4: And I kind of was like in the back of
- 7:11Speaker 4: my head was like, all right, I'm going to show
- 7:13Speaker 4: this guy.
- 7:13Speaker 2: I'm gonna prove him wrong that I'm you know, I'm
- 7:15Speaker 2: going to stay around.
- 7:16Speaker 1: So you used it as motivation.
- 7:19Speaker 4: Not necessarily like I would wake up in bed and go, oh,
- 7:22Speaker 4: mister Miller said, I'm wasn't going to live in this town,
- 7:24Speaker 4: you know, but I it it was there. It was
- 7:28Speaker 4: like a little itch fire fire yeah.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:33Speaker 4: And and I remember also early on in our career.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Did you have music going on at this point when
- 7:39Speaker 1: you were in this guy's class?
- 7:41Speaker 2: Were you the music were I wasn't in any bands
- 7:45Speaker 2: at the time. This is I think it was my sophomore.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Year, okay.
- 7:49Speaker 4: And I I remember early on in our careers in
- 7:53Speaker 4: interviews when people would ask like, what what's your goal?
- 7:56Speaker 2: What's you know what's your goal? What do you want
- 7:58Speaker 2: to do?
- 7:58Speaker 4: Especially after the first album, and I I remember telling
- 8:00Speaker 4: you them, I just want to buy a house.
- 8:02Speaker 2: I just want to buy a house, like like I wanted,
- 8:04Speaker 2: the most normal thing ever, you know.
- 8:06Speaker 4: I just want to buy a house and like be
- 8:08Speaker 4: a like a functioning member of society, you know. And
- 8:12Speaker 4: if I can do it playing music, what a joke,
- 8:15Speaker 4: you know, that would be so much fun.
- 8:17Speaker 1: So that brings me to this.
- 8:19Speaker 3: By the way, we're talking to Doug Rob from Hoosday.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Yes, thanks again for joining us early time for you
- 8:25Speaker 1: out in California. Uh So, now you're getting to the
- 8:29Speaker 1: point where you're gonna swerve into you know, getting into
- 8:32Speaker 1: music and starting a band, and you have that all happen,
- 8:35Speaker 1: and you've talked about it in lots of interviews over
- 8:37Speaker 1: the years, which brings me to this. I'm a flashback
- 8:40Speaker 1: to circa ninety four, Okay, when you guys were first
- 8:44Speaker 1: thrown out there as.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Right, we started, we just we just started.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:48Speaker 1: I vividly remember the local record rap at the time.
- 8:52Speaker 1: I can't remember her name. She was out ahead of
- 8:57Speaker 1: the promotion for you guys. They were introducing this new
- 8:59Speaker 1: band called Hooba stank, and I distinctly.
- 9:02Speaker 4: This was before you go in for this was probably
- 9:05Speaker 4: two thousand and one. Okay, well you're saying ninety four
- 9:08Speaker 4: is when we actually started playing music together, but we
- 9:10Speaker 4: didn't get a record with the two thousands.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Okay, okay, So anyway, Yeah, to set it straight regarding it,
- 9:17Speaker 1: was the first time I had heard of you guys,
- 9:19Speaker 1: and I looked at her and I go, this is
- 9:21Speaker 1: a joke, right, Hoopa stank, What in the world is that?
- 9:26Speaker 1: And you've joked about it over the years, and it
- 9:28Speaker 1: was just kind of a goofy name you guys came
- 9:31Speaker 1: up with, and and uh, it's stuck and it just
- 9:36Speaker 1: and then I heard the music. I'm like, Okay, I
- 9:38Speaker 1: don't care what their name is. Is pretty good.
- 9:40Speaker 5: They're damn good.
- 9:41Speaker 3: I remember the first time that I believe the first
- 9:43Speaker 3: time I saw you was early two thousands, and I
- 9:47Speaker 3: believe it was hard rock.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Live and i'd say we've the few times yeah the uh.
- 9:53Speaker 3: I mean, Pat and I have worked together since ninety six,
- 9:55Speaker 3: so I don't know if they play if you guys
- 9:57Speaker 3: played here before that, but I remember I had to
- 10:00Speaker 3: intro the bands.
- 10:02Speaker 5: And I was like, oh yeah, hubas Dank. They have
- 10:04Speaker 5: some good music, dude. It was just to say, hoobas
- 10:08Speaker 5: Dank was so.
- 10:09Speaker 3: I think that's when I did entertainment reviews, packed right,
- 10:12Speaker 3: and I reviewed it and I called, uh uh, I
- 10:16Speaker 3: think they might have played it with Maroon five.
- 10:18Speaker 5: And I remember I called them morons Maroon five.
- 10:21Speaker 3: Because I did the theses of five.
- 10:25Speaker 1: He screwed up some band names over the year, just
- 10:27Speaker 1: in front of a lot of people and bands for
- 10:30Speaker 1: that matter. It's kind of cringe oh no taco moments. Yeah,
- 10:33Speaker 1: we we love him for it. We love them.
- 10:35Speaker 3: I think I called Finger eleven finger six one time
- 10:39Speaker 3: kids they were playing with I know it was I
- 10:42Speaker 3: called I called Eve six Eve eleven, and.
- 10:46Speaker 5: The finger looked at me and he goes, thanks a lot.
- 10:49Speaker 5: Talk for a while.
- 10:52Speaker 1: I was like, sorry, So you guys, you know you launched.
- 10:57Speaker 1: You you have this weird day, but you got a
- 11:00Speaker 1: gets stuck and you're off and running. And now you
- 11:03Speaker 1: fast forward. Here we are at present day, twenty twenty six,
- 11:06Speaker 1: and you're gonna ready to hit the road again. Huh uh.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Yeah, dude.
- 11:10Speaker 4: We've been on, off and on the road a lot,
- 11:15Speaker 4: especially this year, and and and more specifically right now. Yeah,
- 11:19Speaker 4: we're gonna hitting the road right now with with Stained
- 11:22Speaker 4: and See there for a six week run.
- 11:26Speaker 1: In the anniversary of What Break the Cycle? Right is
- 11:28Speaker 1: that there?
- 11:29Speaker 4: Yes, Yes, that's that's that's the tour for that. We've
- 11:33Speaker 4: been doing Warped Tour shows all year. We did DC,
- 11:37Speaker 4: we did Long Beach here, and we're doing Orlando in November.
- 11:42Speaker 2: And those shows are awesome, dude. Those that's that's kind
- 11:45Speaker 2: of it was one of It's one of those weird.
- 11:46Speaker 4: Mandela effects with that because people are like, oh, man,
- 11:49Speaker 4: I remember seeing you guys back at this show and
- 11:51Speaker 4: it was great, and I'm like, I let them finish
- 11:53Speaker 4: their story and I'm like, bro, this is our first
- 11:55Speaker 4: time playing Warped to wherever and their heads explode.
- 11:58Speaker 2: They're just like what what That's impossible?
- 12:01Speaker 3: You know? And that's what we went to as kids,
- 12:04Speaker 3: was the warp Tour.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Oh totally was.
- 12:07Speaker 4: I mean, I have my own memories of it for sure,
- 12:09Speaker 4: but I'm like, dude, we never played and they go,
- 12:12Speaker 4: how is that even possible? And I remember we've done
- 12:15Speaker 4: some like Q and as with Kevin Lyman, who who who?
- 12:18Speaker 6: You know?
- 12:18Speaker 4: The Warped towards his baby, and he remembers asking us
- 12:22Speaker 4: to please like I remember trying to get you guys
- 12:24Speaker 4: to play in two thousand and one, and I'm like, yeah,
- 12:27Speaker 4: that's when the record came out, the first record, and
- 12:29Speaker 4: I remember the whole thing. It was perfect. It was
- 12:32Speaker 4: like perfect, Like I remember going to the shows. That
- 12:35Speaker 4: was our vibe. Like like I said, I was just
- 12:38Speaker 4: a skate kid were you know. It was so it
- 12:43Speaker 4: was just like it was like, Okay, this is exactly
- 12:45Speaker 4: how I want to do my career, you know. Yeah,
- 12:48Speaker 4: and we like we dropped crawling in the dark. That
- 12:52Speaker 4: song caught on and I remember what I remember our
- 12:57Speaker 4: manager and our record label at the time coming and
- 12:59Speaker 4: going to you guys don't want to do this. You
- 13:01Speaker 4: guys are going to go out with like a big
- 13:02Speaker 4: band like tour in a bus.
- 13:05Speaker 2: You know.
- 13:06Speaker 4: You you can always come back to it. And so
- 13:10Speaker 4: we like begrudgingly like all right, we'll we'll do it
- 13:13Speaker 4: next year. And then we said we'll do it next year.
- 13:16Speaker 4: You know, it just got it just kept getting pushed
- 13:18Speaker 4: off and then it went away.
- 13:21Speaker 2: You know.
- 13:21Speaker 4: So now that it's back, uh, and we got the
- 13:25Speaker 4: invite and having played the first couple of shows.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Then it was so much fun. I have to tell
- 13:30Speaker 2: you everything. It's go ahead, I said, it's everything. I
- 13:35Speaker 2: I hope it would be.
- 13:37Speaker 1: On a selfish note, here in Central Florida, it's a
- 13:40Speaker 1: godsend that they have now made this thing in November,
- 13:43Speaker 1: because it used to be you know, straight summer dates
- 13:46Speaker 1: when it would come to Florida in the middle of
- 13:48Speaker 1: July or August, and it was like it was gonna rain,
- 13:51Speaker 1: there was gonna be lightning delays, it was going to
- 13:53Speaker 1: be surface of the sun hot. And I mean when
- 13:56Speaker 1: you throw in the humidity, and I know, it gets
- 13:58Speaker 1: great and it's cool and the vibe and but after
- 14:00Speaker 1: a while, it's like Jesus, man, this is enough. So
- 14:03Speaker 1: now that it's in November, man, the masks that showed
- 14:06Speaker 1: up last year, I've never seen anything like that.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I couldn't agree more. The the DC.
- 14:13Speaker 4: One was in June, and that was that was like
- 14:18Speaker 4: I couldn't I couldn't even believe. And you know, you
- 14:20Speaker 4: don't know your set times and they throw you on.
- 14:22Speaker 4: I think we played at like four o'clock, right, you know,
- 14:25Speaker 4: no shade, no nothing. And I give all the people
- 14:28Speaker 4: who attend those things like I don't know how they
- 14:31Speaker 4: do it. I mean, I know that that they're music
- 14:33Speaker 4: fans and but yeah, you're up there like going, I'm
- 14:37Speaker 4: gonna die, I'm gonna really die.
- 14:39Speaker 2: So hot.
- 14:39Speaker 5: I'm on a black stage to boot.
- 14:42Speaker 4: Yeah, and like I said, no, no shade and here,
- 14:46Speaker 4: you know, run around for for forty five minutes and
- 14:49Speaker 4: scream your head off.
- 14:50Speaker 1: What are the logistics and just I'm sure beyond chaos
- 14:54Speaker 1: for the artist perspective for something like the Warped tour.
- 14:58Speaker 1: What what they're like, Okay, show up at whatever time
- 15:02Speaker 1: and meet us here, and it's just it just looks
- 15:04Speaker 1: like controlled chaos the whole thing it is.
- 15:08Speaker 4: But it's controlled well, and I think because it isn't
- 15:11Speaker 4: a you know, thirty show run during the summer. Well,
- 15:15Speaker 4: you know, we have back to back to back things
- 15:17Speaker 4: and people in vans and and everything has to be
- 15:19Speaker 4: more mobile. It's a lot different in a good way
- 15:24Speaker 4: for the people working it and the and the bands themselves.
- 15:27Speaker 4: You know, they have proper accommodations and stuff like that.
- 15:30Speaker 4: But it's a little bit like, yo, we don't know
- 15:33Speaker 4: when we're going to play, so you need to be
- 15:34Speaker 4: here at you know, at this time and you may
- 15:38Speaker 4: not play for another eight hours, you know, R and so,
- 15:41Speaker 4: and then.
- 15:42Speaker 2: You hear but it's a cool way to see but
- 15:44Speaker 2: it's a cool way to see the other bands, which
- 15:45Speaker 2: is the point, you know, like.
- 15:47Speaker 3: So definitely, and then you hear the thing of oh yeah,
- 15:50Speaker 3: and you might have an interview at this time, Like, I.
- 15:53Speaker 5: Don't want to do an interview out there. We just
- 15:55Speaker 5: want to chill out and do our thing.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, is that no?
- 16:00Speaker 4: I mean yeah, it's basically they they will fill your
- 16:04Speaker 4: day with interviews until like an hour before your set,
- 16:08Speaker 4: and and then after your set they'll be like, here,
- 16:10Speaker 4: there's another six interviews I need to do.
- 16:12Speaker 2: So it's fine. I mean, I feel like.
- 16:15Speaker 4: I've never really I've never really had a problem with
- 16:18Speaker 4: with media impress and stuff like that, and even more
- 16:21Speaker 4: so now I'm just like, dude, who cares?
- 16:22Speaker 2: This is like they gonna look you are.
- 16:25Speaker 3: Yeah, and and it's promoting it's promoting the band at
- 16:28Speaker 3: the end.
- 16:28Speaker 4: Of the day, you know, yeah, exactly, It's it's.
- 16:32Speaker 5: Did you ever play? Have you played Welcome to Rockville
- 16:35Speaker 5: here in daytimely? Yet? I'm trying to.
- 16:39Speaker 2: I think we did last year?
- 16:41Speaker 4: We did?
- 16:41Speaker 1: No, we did?
- 16:41Speaker 2: We did do last year the year before. I think
- 16:44Speaker 2: that's another one which can't keep.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Track of playing and when it's in.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Yeah, that one was massive.
- 16:52Speaker 4: It was a lot of fun and equally uh basically
- 16:55Speaker 4: like playing on the Sun.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, oh yeah. So after many years of nothing new,
- 17:01Speaker 1: all of a sudden, here a month or two ago,
- 17:04Speaker 1: you put out this straight up punk sound in tune
- 17:08Speaker 1: how do You Sleep? Which brings me to a question
- 17:11Speaker 1: that we have talked about on the air here this
- 17:14Speaker 1: trend over the last you know, however, many years where
- 17:18Speaker 1: a lot of artists no longer have an album mentality.
- 17:22Speaker 1: It's just like, hey, when inspiration strikes and we got
- 17:24Speaker 1: something new, we'll put it out there. Don't want to
- 17:26Speaker 1: have the pressure of having to do a whole album.
- 17:29Speaker 1: What is your take on that whole line of thinking there.
- 17:36Speaker 4: I think it's cool. I can go either way. Selfishly,
- 17:42Speaker 4: I really enjoy the writing process and the recording process
- 17:47Speaker 4: and that whole thing that happens outside of the public eye.
- 17:51Speaker 2: To make a record like an album.
- 17:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I really enjoy that, you know, Like it's so
- 17:57Speaker 4: cool to go to the studio like a studio every
- 18:01Speaker 4: day for six weeks, you know, and and uh, and
- 18:04Speaker 4: be in that environment and that creative kind of uh flow,
- 18:08Speaker 4: and you're going from song to song and each one
- 18:11Speaker 4: kind of gets better, and then you go back and
- 18:12Speaker 4: change things and that's really exciting and I guess just
- 18:15Speaker 4: really creatively fulfilling. But I totally understand the the want
- 18:26Speaker 4: to just do singles or smaller or EPs and stuff
- 18:30Speaker 4: like that. Our guitar player Dan has been wanting. He
- 18:32Speaker 4: has a very love hate relationship with uh the writing
- 18:35Speaker 4: and recording process.
- 18:37Speaker 2: I do too, but it's more love. His is equally
- 18:41Speaker 2: painful sometimes the recording process.
- 18:43Speaker 4: And dude, like even like after our third album, he
- 18:48Speaker 4: was like, Dude, I don't ever want.
- 18:49Speaker 1: To do this any it's just grind grind.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:52Speaker 4: I just He's like, I just want to put out singles,
- 18:54Speaker 4: And at that time was definitely against it because I
- 18:57Speaker 4: really loved it. But after a while I kind of go, yeah,
- 19:03Speaker 4: you know what it's it makes sense from a for me,
- 19:07Speaker 4: from a like a listener's point of view. For a
- 19:11Speaker 4: legacy band like ourself, you know, like who have a
- 19:14Speaker 4: lot of when we play shows, you know, people have
- 19:19Speaker 4: a certain set of songs that they go down to hear,
- 19:22Speaker 4: you know, But if as an As a band, you
- 19:27Speaker 4: write all this new stuff and you're excited to play
- 19:29Speaker 4: all this new stuff, and so there's like this push pull,
- 19:33Speaker 4: like do we play you know, all the singles or
- 19:36Speaker 4: do we play more you know, new stuff. And if
- 19:39Speaker 4: I'm being honest, man, when I go see a band
- 19:41Speaker 4: that I've known for a long time, I just want
- 19:43Speaker 4: to hear what I know.
- 19:45Speaker 2: I want to know, I want to.
- 19:46Speaker 4: See the song. Yeah, I want to hear the hits.
- 19:48Speaker 4: I want to hear the songs that I love and
- 19:51Speaker 4: maybe a song, a new song. And even that time,
- 19:54Speaker 4: it's like that's I feel like that's when people I'm
- 19:57Speaker 4: gonna go get a drink and go to the bathroom.
- 19:59Speaker 1: You are literally on the same page as we're singing
- 20:03Speaker 1: from them.
- 20:04Speaker 4: It's just it's just yeah, yeah, Like so why not
- 20:08Speaker 4: just put out one song, get your fans to really
- 20:11Speaker 4: like that one song so it becomes one of the
- 20:14Speaker 4: songs they want to hear. They don't have to study
- 20:16Speaker 4: twelve songs on a record. They only got one song.
- 20:18Speaker 4: You know, Hopefully they like it and you play it
- 20:21Speaker 4: and it's kind of and it's easier to like fit
- 20:24Speaker 4: it in with the rest of your set. And if
- 20:26Speaker 4: you do that every couple of months put out one
- 20:29Speaker 4: new song. You know, you can kind of rotate new
- 20:31Speaker 4: songs or just play two new songs, but they're not
- 20:33Speaker 4: like two randoms, like people know the song there's been,
- 20:36Speaker 4: it's been on the radio, it's it's there's got a
- 20:38Speaker 4: video for it. It just kind of works better with
- 20:42Speaker 4: where we are positioned in our career, you know, and
- 20:46Speaker 4: and people's you know, short attention span nowadays, include myself.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Speaking of song by song basis talk about how your
- 20:53Speaker 1: lives changed when you put out the Reason and all
- 20:57Speaker 1: of a sudden, now you have become a name and
- 21:03Speaker 1: a quantity to people that you originally never had any
- 21:06Speaker 1: probably dream of feeling to.
- 21:09Speaker 6: You know.
- 21:10Speaker 4: Yeah, it was a I've said, you know many times,
- 21:15Speaker 4: but it seems to be the perfect explanation.
- 21:18Speaker 2: It was definitely a double edged sword. Yeah.
- 21:21Speaker 4: Up to that point in our careers, we had released
- 21:25Speaker 4: an album that went platinum. We had a couple of
- 21:28Speaker 4: singles on the second record that we're doing fine. Like,
- 21:31Speaker 4: the trajectory of our band was steady and going in
- 21:36Speaker 4: the direction that we wanted. And more importantly, I was
- 21:41Speaker 4: said the perception of the band within the band matched
- 21:45Speaker 4: the perception of the audiences towards us, you know, like,
- 21:49Speaker 4: this is who we are, this is how we this
- 21:52Speaker 4: is what we do, and the audience agreed, yes, that's
- 21:56Speaker 4: what you are, you know. So we were kind of
- 21:59Speaker 4: had control of this thing, you know, and then that
- 22:02Speaker 4: song comes out and it absolutely blows up.
- 22:08Speaker 2: It's such a.
- 22:09Speaker 4: Blur how fast things change, you know, but it got
- 22:14Speaker 4: bigger than the band, is what happened. You know, when
- 22:16Speaker 4: you have this massive pop hit when you only had
- 22:21Speaker 4: like these kind of alt rock hits prior, it's a
- 22:24Speaker 4: totally different audience.
- 22:25Speaker 2: And so you know, at one.
- 22:28Speaker 4: Moment, we're playing you know, theaters fifteen hundred two thousand
- 22:32Speaker 4: theaters with a bunch of teenagers and twenty year olds
- 22:36Speaker 4: and bodies flying everywhere, which I said, which matched who
- 22:39Speaker 4: we were. And then a few months later we're headlining
- 22:45Speaker 4: amphitheaters and fifteen thousand seats, you know, like, but it's
- 22:48Speaker 4: all like teen girls and their parents. So it was
- 22:51Speaker 4: really it was a wee and that, while exciting because
- 22:56Speaker 4: it was so large, was like a culture, you know,
- 23:00Speaker 4: like what do we This is weird, this is fun,
- 23:03Speaker 4: and we kind of just ran. Honestly, we just ran
- 23:05Speaker 4: with it. We never said like, oh now we're a
- 23:07Speaker 4: pop whatever. We just kind of like took it in stride.
- 23:10Speaker 2: But then it re.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Animated itself with the whole TikTok thing, right, and that
- 23:15Speaker 1: is I mean, yeah, that people you know, I'm not
- 23:18Speaker 1: a perfect person, you know, memes and you even doing
- 23:21Speaker 1: it yourself to that was when you guys first got
- 23:24Speaker 1: on there, right, It was you kind of launching your
- 23:27Speaker 1: guys TikTok.
- 23:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:30Speaker 4: Yeah, so like yeah, like we we lost control of
- 23:33Speaker 4: the you know, of the perception, and that was the
- 23:35Speaker 4: fight for a while, and then you know, years later
- 23:38Speaker 4: it pops back up and almost you know, like I said,
- 23:42Speaker 4: we just kind of had fun with it. We're like, dude,
- 23:44Speaker 4: this isn't something we can now like quote unquote take
- 23:48Speaker 4: advantage of because I know a lot of people tell
- 23:50Speaker 4: me like, oh, you got to do this, and you
- 23:51Speaker 4: got to do this and go to do this, and
- 23:52Speaker 4: our mentality was just like, dude, this is just a
- 23:54Speaker 4: wave we got, you know, if we want to ride it,
- 23:57Speaker 4: have fun with it, and then when it goes away,
- 23:59Speaker 4: let it go away, you know. And yeah, it was
- 24:02Speaker 4: just very self deprecating and which is what we are.
- 24:06Speaker 2: And we just had fun with it.
- 24:08Speaker 3: You know, I think that you liked the mom and
- 24:11Speaker 3: daughter crowds, Like why it worked for you?
- 24:14Speaker 5: How you're like, hey, let's just go with this.
- 24:16Speaker 3: I think it's because you're the same dude that said
- 24:18Speaker 3: I want to I want to live in a house.
- 24:21Speaker 5: That's your normal.
- 24:22Speaker 2: Dude, Right, well, what do you what are you going
- 24:26Speaker 2: to do? Like, what are you going to do?
- 24:27Speaker 4: Not play these you know, like, hey, we want to
- 24:30Speaker 4: play this the so and so theater and that they're going,
- 24:32Speaker 4: why you can play the the arena down the street?
- 24:35Speaker 2: Right, you know, what are you going to do?
- 24:39Speaker 4: So?
- 24:40Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 24:40Speaker 4: And and and uh. It was a quick lesson or
- 24:45Speaker 4: a hard lesson, but a good lesson in the in
- 24:47Speaker 4: the fickleness of pop pop uh fans, you know, like
- 24:53Speaker 4: they're they they're many and loud, but man, they burn
- 24:57Speaker 4: out fast.
- 24:58Speaker 2: It's just like, Okay, who's the next big you know pop?
- 25:01Speaker 1: What's right next? Uh? I gotta think though, that's had
- 25:06Speaker 1: to that song in particular, has had to really translate
- 25:09Speaker 1: well into monetizing things and how you all make money
- 25:12Speaker 1: now on the side of the streaming count as opposed
- 25:16Speaker 1: to physical sales of you know, CDs or vinyl or
- 25:19Speaker 1: cassettes because that song has become part of the fabric
- 25:23Speaker 1: of so many cultural events in people's lives.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Right I sound like I'm complaining about the success of
- 25:32Speaker 2: this It's not.
- 25:35Speaker 4: Yeah, not at any point did we ever go I
- 25:37Speaker 4: wish we never wrote it, or I never wish it
- 25:39Speaker 4: ever was. I mean, it was always holy cow, like,
- 25:44Speaker 4: we're so lucky that we we you know, we wrote
- 25:48Speaker 4: the thing.
- 25:48Speaker 2: We stumbled upon this thing and connected with people.
- 25:51Speaker 4: Are there, you know, difficult things that come along with it, absolutely,
- 25:55Speaker 4: But most of it happened early, you know, like I said,
- 26:00Speaker 4: said the kind of the struggle to control this thing.
- 26:03Speaker 4: But ever since, man, I mean, I'd be totally lying
- 26:07Speaker 4: if I if I said that that song is obviously
- 26:11Speaker 4: what's kept our career alive, not specifically only that song,
- 26:16Speaker 4: but it's what to open the door for people to
- 26:18Speaker 4: hear the rest of what we do.
- 26:19Speaker 2: And Yeah, that house.
- 26:23Speaker 4: That I wanted to buy in the area that I
- 26:25Speaker 4: wanted to buy, that's that's the song, you know, That's
- 26:27Speaker 4: that's what it did for me.
- 26:29Speaker 1: So I think that's a good way to bring this
- 26:31Speaker 1: whole conversation full circle. That's a really great perspective right there.
- 26:35Speaker 5: Yeah, that's what I was saying. It is, it's like
- 26:37Speaker 5: you're a normal dude.
- 26:38Speaker 3: You wanted the house and now you're the guy with
- 26:42Speaker 3: the family in the house.
- 26:44Speaker 1: The reason is the reason, right.
- 26:48Speaker 4: Right.
- 26:48Speaker 1: So okay, we're looking forward to seeing you guys down
- 26:51Speaker 1: our way in November at the Warped tour there at
- 26:53Speaker 1: Camping World Stadium. Should be beautiful weather again, it was
- 26:58Speaker 1: last year. I'm sure it will be November.
- 27:00Speaker 2: Really, what was it?
- 27:00Speaker 1: Well, it's nice and cool, crystal clear blue skies. It
- 27:04Speaker 1: was wonderful.
- 27:06Speaker 2: I can't wait.
- 27:07Speaker 1: Awesome, not cold, not cold, but very pleasant.
- 27:11Speaker 3: Now that Pat said that, watched some freak November hurricane.
- 27:16Speaker 2: Stop.
- 27:17Speaker 1: Hey, anything else you want to get out there before
- 27:19Speaker 1: we run out of time here on the off their podcast.
- 27:22Speaker 2: Did I think you think you got it? You know?
- 27:24Speaker 2: New new song out new you know touring? Uh song?
- 27:28Speaker 2: So how do you sleep? Yep, take a listen. We'll
- 27:30Speaker 2: play it for you live awesome and by the way,
- 27:33Speaker 2: play the one we'll play. We'll play the one new
- 27:34Speaker 2: song well and the rest will be the hits.
- 27:36Speaker 5: That one.
- 27:37Speaker 3: Yeah, by the way, it was two years ago you
- 27:40Speaker 3: played Welcome to Rockville. Definitely, Okay, I remember it.
- 27:44Speaker 2: I definitely remember, I just don't.
- 27:46Speaker 5: And it was hot as hell. Like you said, Pat,
- 27:48Speaker 5: that was that one. Oh my god, it was you.
- 27:51Speaker 5: I walked by and I see Pat and his wife.
- 27:53Speaker 5: He's like, I.
- 27:54Speaker 1: Think I did utter the phrase I think I'm going
- 27:56Speaker 1: to die.
- 27:59Speaker 4: It was one of those shows where they had they
- 28:01Speaker 4: had multiple fire hoses in the front and they were
- 28:03Speaker 4: just hosing people down.
- 28:05Speaker 6: Crazy rock and roll baby. All right, Doug rob from
- 28:11Speaker 6: who was staying, appreciate you coming and being the test
- 28:15Speaker 6: subject for our new streaming platform here.
- 28:17Speaker 5: With j r R.
- 28:18Speaker 2: All Right, man, I hope it works out.
- 28:20Speaker 5: It worked, dude.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Hey, go back to sleep.
- 28:23Speaker 4: Man, Dude, I wish I could. I got a bunch
- 28:26Speaker 4: of other interviews lined up.
- 28:27Speaker 5: Okay, Sorry, we took you a long way on that one. Yeah.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Thank thanks for fitting us in this morning.
- 28:32Speaker 4: Man.
- 28:32Speaker 1: We do appreciate it.
- 28:33Speaker 4: Thank you, brother.
- 28:34Speaker 2: All good guys. Thanks man, We'll talk to you.
