- 0:00Dot com. Welcome to the Daily Quote, the
- 0:05podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:10I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and let's dive into today's
- 0:13quote from Vincent van Gogh, one of the most influential painters
- 0:18in history, who once said, if you hear a voice within you say
- 0:24you cannot paint, then by all means paint and that voice will
- 0:29be silenced. Van Gogh isn't saying ignore the
- 0:34voice. He's not saying think positive
- 0:37thoughts until it goes away. He's saying do the exact thing
- 0:41the voice says you can't do, and the doing itself will silence
- 0:47it. And here's why that works.
- 0:50That voice isn't giving you information.
- 0:53It's giving you fear disguised as truth.
- 0:56You cannot paint. Sounds like a fact, like the
- 1:00voice knows something about your abilities, but it doesn't.
- 1:05It's just trying to keep you safe, keep you from failing, and
- 1:09keep you from being embarrassed. And the only way to prove it
- 1:13wrong is to do the thing anyways.
- 1:16When you paint, when you actually put brush to canvas
- 1:20despite the voice, one of two things will happen.
- 1:26Either you discover that you can paint and the voice was lying,
- 1:32or you paint badly, survive it, and realize the voice was wrong
- 1:37about that being a catastrophe. Either way, the voice loses
- 1:42power because it's been tested against reality and found
- 1:45wanting. The voice only has power when
- 1:48you listen to it, when you let it stop you without checking if
- 1:52it's telling the truth. Van Gogh heard that voice
- 1:55constantly. He struggled with doubt, with
- 1:59mental illness and criticism. The voice told him he couldn't
- 2:03paint, that his work was worthless, that he should give
- 2:08up. And he painted anyway, thousands
- 2:12of paintings. And now, long after his death,
- 2:15his work is celebrated worldwide.
- 2:19Voice was wrong, and it took painting to prove it.
- 2:25Van Gogh was right that doing silence is the voice, not the
- 2:31other way around. So here's the question.
- 2:35What voice is telling you that you can't do something?
- 2:39And what would happen if you did it anyway?
- 2:43Because that voice isn't giving you facts, it's giving you fear,
- 2:48and the only way to silence it is to test it against reality.
- 2:52And by all means, do the thing and watch the voice disappear.
- 2:59That's it for today. I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off
- 3:01for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 3:06Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
