Latest / Recovering Out Loud / Busy Is the New Drunk | How Resistance Kills Your Recovery
Transcript
- 0:00You know when you're having one of those weeks where just
- 0:03nothing seems to be going in your direction?
- 0:06That's happening to me. I'm in the middle of it right
- 0:08now. Things are not going my way.
- 0:11And guess what? I don't need to drink over it
- 0:12and neither do you. This is part of the process.
- 0:15Life is happening and I'm accepting life on life's terms.
- 0:18I am doing the next right thing despite the circumstances in my
- 0:23life showing up. Continuing to do this podcast
- 0:26posting on social media when the results aren't what I think they
- 0:29should be same with this podcast.
- 0:32We've got a lot of new listeners that are checking in these days
- 0:35and I appreciate every single one of you.
- 0:36I just want to say that thank you for showing up, continuing
- 0:38to show up, sending me messages, commenting.
- 0:41I appreciate every and I read every single one of them today.
- 0:44I want to talk about resistance and what is resistance.
- 0:47Essentially, to me, resistance is anything that is in my way of
- 0:52getting to my goal. It's from a high level.
- 0:55It's that simple. I'm gonna talk about the
- 0:56different forms of resistance today and there's about four of
- 1:00them that I'm gonna talk. Oh no, five of them that I'm
- 1:02gonna talk about. But essentially, resistance is
- 1:05usually self-imposed, but it's anything that is blocking me
- 1:09from getting to my destination, my goal, blocking me from
- 1:13recovery, blocking me from growth, usually self-imposed,
- 1:17like I said, but there can be external resistance, you know,
- 1:20for health reasons. There can be external resistance
- 1:23from circumstances that are out of our control that are blocking
- 1:27us from getting to that goal. But I'm gonna talk about all of
- 1:29them. I'm gonna talk about how to get
- 1:30through it. What does resistance looks like,
- 1:32look like? Why does it matter in the frame
- 1:33and context of recovery and how to push through?
- 1:36We're not going around things in recovery.
- 1:38We're not going over. We're going through them.
- 1:41We're pushing through them despite our feelings, despite
- 1:45how I feel about the CRA not giving me my refund and telling
- 1:49me I actually owe them money, not accepting my medical
- 1:52receipts out of my control. I can do the next right thing.
- 1:55I can try to move through it and look for other ways to get
- 1:59through it, like I said. But there's a lot of things out
- 2:02of my control. There's a lot of things out of
- 2:03your control in your life today. So what can I do instead?
- 2:06How can I shift perspective, perception to get the things
- 2:10done that I need to? And acceptance is the answer to
- 2:13all my problems today. That's a tough one to swallow,
- 2:16but it's true. I don't need to be OK with it.
- 2:18I don't need to agree with it. But the the quicker I move into
- 2:22acceptance, the better my life gets, the quieter my head gets.
- 2:26And at the end of the day, I just want peace, man That's it.
- 2:29I want peace, I want Peace of Mind.
- 2:30I want quiet. I don't want circumstances to go
- 2:34my way, although I do. But at the end of the day, how
- 2:37can I just let the things roll off my shoulders?
- 2:40How can I be in that state where things aren't bothering me,
- 2:43where I'm not reacting, I'm responding.
- 2:45So let's get into it. Welcome back to Recovering out
- 2:48Loud. I'm Anthony.
- 2:48I'm an alcoholic and an addict. If you don't know who I am, I am
- 2:53a studying to be an addictions counselor halfway through been
- 2:56in recovery since 2015. I relapsed after 7 1/2 years.
- 2:59Now I'm back almost a year and a half sober, clean again.
- 3:02And I'm grateful that I didn't die.
- 3:04I'm grateful that I made it back here.
- 3:06I'm grateful that I'm able to show up and do this podcast.
- 3:08So I want to talk about a specific moment with regards to
- 3:11resistance where I, I sort of noticed these things happening
- 3:15in my life. You're at a meeting or you're
- 3:18listening to a recovery podcast or you're listening to a
- 3:21recovery speaker and, or you're online on Instagram researching
- 3:25recovery, how to get through this or how to get sober or
- 3:28whatever. And you, you find yourself in
- 3:30research mode instead of recovery mode where you're sort
- 3:34of just looking for information and you're not changing
- 3:37anything, you're not taking any action.
- 3:38I've been here many times. I'm, I'm researching, like I
- 3:42said, and I'm not actually implementing the research into
- 3:46my life. Resistance doesn't always look
- 3:49like saying no. Sometimes it looks like saying
- 3:52yes to everything except the thing that would actually change
- 3:56you. So to me, that means resistance
- 4:00can hide itself, can disguise itself as me doing other things
- 4:04instead of what I ought to be doing, what I what I normally I
- 4:09don't want to say should. I don't like the word should in
- 4:11recovery, but things I ought to be doing instead for my
- 4:14recovery. I'm going out with people
- 4:17instead of going to that meeting or I am putting other things
- 4:21above. I'm prioritizing other things
- 4:24above my recovery. Resistance can look like that
- 4:26too. And if you've ever done that,
- 4:29don't worry, you're I'm not here to shame you.
- 4:31You're not a bad recovery person.
- 4:33You're not failing. This is just a reminder that
- 4:37resistance can take many forms, and I'm gonna talk about them.
- 4:40So 5 forms of resistance that hide in plain sight.
- 4:45The ones that don't get caught because they don't look like
- 4:47resistance. They can disguise themselves.
- 4:49Like I said, Resistance 1. The unsexy work.
- 4:53You're wanting transformation without the boring inputs.
- 4:57Sleep, water, calls returned, answering the phone, calling a
- 5:01newcomer, going to that meeting, eating before noon, the stuff
- 5:04nobody puts in a real or a video on YouTube.
- 5:08It's just the the boring, unwatched, quiet stuff.
- 5:11The do things, the reading your books in the morning, the
- 5:15meditation practice, the prayer, the stuff that nobody sees but
- 5:19that moves the needle little by little.
- 5:22So you would rather write a 2 hour journal entry about how
- 5:26you're stuck before you'll just go to bed at a reasonable hour?
- 5:29The simple things. The unsexy work feels too small
- 5:33to matter. It feels insignificant when
- 5:35you're doing it or when you're thinking about it.
- 5:38It feels like you're not doing enough, so you skip it and you
- 5:40reach for something that feels like gross.
- 5:42A book, a workshop, a deep conversation, Anything but the
- 5:46boring 4 things. The boring 4 things being sleep,
- 5:49water and calls, returned connection, going to a meeting,
- 5:53eating before noon, recovery stuff, meditation, prayer or
- 5:56whatever your routine looks like.
- 5:57Those routine things that aren't fun, not sexy, but they work.
- 6:01They move the needle. Progress, not perfection.
- 6:04You are. It's like AI like to think of it
- 6:06as like a rocket ship when you when NASA and I'm not smart, I'm
- 6:10not trying to be smarty or pretend that I'm a NASA
- 6:12scientist, but when when somebody, when NASA launches a
- 6:15rocket into space, they do such incremental shifts in the
- 6:20trajectory of the rocket that over time will benefit the
- 6:24rocket greatly. So 1° at launch angle changes
- 6:29into maybe 30° down the road 30,000 miles from here, if that
- 6:36makes sense. So I'm making the small changes
- 6:38in the beginning to get the great outputs, the great results
- 6:41in the end. I'm not sure what that's gonna
- 6:43look like, but I'm doing the small things in the beginning.
- 6:46So why, Why does this stuff matter?
- 6:48Why does it outlive the drink, outlive the drug?
- 6:51Addiction was a high intensity solution for us.
- 6:54Big swings, big crashes, big meaning recovery is mostly low
- 6:57intensity, boring, unsexy on purpose, work the wiring rebels
- 7:02against boring. So the boring things that I
- 7:05talked about, why do they matter?
- 7:06Well, sleep, food, water, one human contact a day talking to a
- 7:10new alcoholic or addict or anyone in your life.
- 7:13If those aren't dialed in, nothing else matters.
- 7:15If my routine isn't dialed in for me, it's reading the book in
- 7:18the morning, it's prayer, it's meditation following a guided
- 7:21meditation app. If I don't have those things
- 7:23dialed in, I can't have the rest of my recovery program working.
- 7:27I can't be the man I want to be. Jim is another one working out.
- 7:31I can't believe I forgot that running for me resistance to
- 7:34slowing down. So the move is you're staying
- 7:38busy as the new new numb, your productivity has become your new
- 7:43drug. If you don't stop moving, you
- 7:44don't have to feel anything. If I just focus on filling my
- 7:48calendar and moving and being active, doing things, I don't
- 7:53have time to think about my emotions.
- 7:54I don't have time to feel. I don't have time to think about
- 7:58how shitty it is or or whatever to deal with that underlying
- 8:01issue, that underlying emotion, that underlying pain.
- 8:04I'll just stay busy all the time because now I'm worth it.
- 8:06If I'm busy. I feel like I am contributing to
- 8:11society. I am important, I I matter.
- 8:14I've had weeks of my recovery where every hour was scheduled
- 8:16work, gym, podcast content, calls, errands, and called it
- 8:21productive until I realized I hadn't been alone with myself in
- 8:24like 11 days. When was the last time you did
- 8:28some kind of self-care activity? For me it's going to the movie
- 8:30theater by myself or watching a movie somewhere else.
- 8:32When was the last time I just sat with myself?
- 8:35Went for a walk by myself. I have to schedule that in now.
- 8:38I have to make it a point. I have to make it intentional to
- 8:41include that in part of my recovery today.
- 8:44The trick here is busy looks healthy.
- 8:47Busy looks like the opposite of using busy gets praised.
- 8:51Everybody gives you an attaboy and a way to go.
- 8:53You're productive. 2 jobs. Nice.
- 8:56This guy's got it going on. Nobody texts you concerned
- 9:00because you're working too much. Why does it outlive the drink or
- 9:03drug? Drinking was a way to skip the
- 9:05uncomfortable parts of being a person sober.
- 9:08You need a new skip button. Busy is the most socially
- 9:11rewarded 1 available. So what helps me is scheduling
- 9:15blank space, 30 minutes, putting it in my calendar, No phone, no
- 9:19agenda. If that 30 minutes feels
- 9:21unbearable, that's the diagnosis right there.
- 9:23Resistance 3. Resistance dressed as
- 9:26preparation. So the move is consuming
- 9:30recovery content as a substitute for doing recovery.
- 9:32Reading the book about boundaries instead of
- 9:34implementing or having the boundary conversation, the
- 9:36difficult conversation. Listening to the podcast about
- 9:39hard talks instead of having the hard talk.
- 9:42So this is the person that can name 6 podcasts on attachment
- 9:45styles, but you haven't called the person you owe a call back
- 9:49in three weeks. I'm guilty of this all the time,
- 9:50man. I'm terrible at answering calls.
- 9:52I'm terrible at answering texts. I got to work on it.
- 9:55The trick here is it feels like work.
- 9:57You're learning, you're growing, you're doing the work in
- 9:59quotations, but the work isn't the input.
- 10:02The work is the action the input is supposed to lead to.
- 10:06The work isn't the input. The work is the action the input
- 10:10is supposed to lead to. This is a program of action.
- 10:13We say that we can't think our way into recovery or think our
- 10:16way into good actions. We have to act.
- 10:19And if that means pretending at first, faking it till you make
- 10:22it, I'm all for it man. Take action.
- 10:24I don't know what I'm doing. I'm doing it anyways.
- 10:27I've done that many times. This guy told me it would work
- 10:29to stay sober, so I'm going to do it.
- 10:31Why does it outlive the drink? So addiction taught us, taught a
- 10:34lot of us to confuse intensity with progress.
- 10:38Reading hard things, feeling them deeply, sitting with them,
- 10:41that's the intensity. Doing the small, concrete,
- 10:43uncomfortable action, that's progress.
- 10:46It's easy to mistake one toward the other.
- 10:48So what helps me here is the one action test before I consume one
- 10:52piece of recovery content. What's the one uncomfortable
- 10:54concrete saying I'm avoiding? Let's do that first.
- 10:58And I'm not perfect. Let's be honest, I there's a lot
- 11:01of stuff I'm avoiding in recovery.
- 11:03Calling people when I should be calling them, going to more
- 11:05recovery events, getting outside my house, getting over my
- 11:09isolation and just showing up to things, planning things, doing,
- 11:12being social, social aspect of my life sucks right now and I'm
- 11:15working on it. Resistance for good things.
- 11:19So the move is sabotaging and I have a whole episode on self
- 11:22sabotage. Go check it out.
- 11:24Self sabotage. Why do we self sabotage in
- 11:26recovery? I go into detail on that
- 11:27episode. But self sabotaging When life
- 11:29starts working, you pick a fight, you skip the thing you
- 11:32said. You don't.
- 11:33You do. You disappear for a week, you
- 11:35watch Netflix for two days straight.
- 11:37You doesn't always look big. Sometimes it's just letting a
- 11:40good thing rot through neglect. The trick here is that chaos was
- 11:44home for a lot of us. Stability feels like wearing
- 11:47someone else's clothes. It's uncomfortable.
- 11:49I don't know stability because I'm so used to being here for so
- 11:52long at the top of the at the graph, and I'm so used to being
- 11:56at the bottom of the graph that being in the middle, being
- 11:59comfortable is so uncomfortable for your nervous system.
- 12:02Reads calm as wrong error. Why does this outlive the drink?
- 12:06Addiction trained you for crisis.
- 12:08Crisis was the baseline. Without crisis, the baseline
- 12:11goes quiet and the quiet feels suspicious, uncomfortable.
- 12:15So a part of that you starts manufacturing the next crisis to
- 12:19get back to known territory. I like crisis.
- 12:22This is comfortable. Chaos is comfortable.
- 12:24I'm going to rock the boat here. What helps for me is naming it
- 12:26out loud when I notice it. So I'm in a good stretch and I'm
- 12:29trying to find a reason to ruin it.
- 12:30Things are going too well. This can't.
- 12:32It's got to come to an end soon. This is too good to be true.
- 12:35You ever said that before? The minute you say it out loud,
- 12:38it loses some of its grip. Resistance 5.
- 12:41The final resistance. I'm going to talk about today
- 12:42being seen. So keeping recovery surface
- 12:45level, telling the story you've told 100 times.
- 12:47Because the new, tender, fresh thing, the thing you're actually
- 12:52struggling with right now, is too raw to put into words.
- 12:57You've told the rock bottom story so many times it doesn't
- 13:00feel like yours anymore. Meanwhile, the thing you've been
- 13:03white knuckling this month, you haven't told anyone.
- 13:06Not your sponsor, not your partner, not your group.
- 13:08I love this one. This is the the pretender in
- 13:12recovery that I talked about in the episode about which are you
- 13:14member a tender or pretender. I'm not getting current if you
- 13:17find yourself in recovery places.
- 13:19If I find myself in recovery meetings, places with other
- 13:23people, sharing about my past too much and I'm not getting
- 13:27current, I'm not sharing about this financial insecurity that
- 13:30I'm going with. I'm not complaining.
- 13:32I'm sure it sounds like I'm complaining.
- 13:34I'm probably complaining. Sorry about that.
- 13:36If I don't share about the stuff that I'm going through, I'm
- 13:39never going to get through it because it's going to live in my
- 13:42head as well. This is too hard to go get over.
- 13:44You're never going to get through this.
- 13:45There's a difference between complaining about my problems
- 13:48and talking about them to look for solutions.
- 13:51I want to live in the solution today.
- 13:53I have lived in the problem for far too long in my life.
- 13:56I still can live in the problem for far too long.
- 13:58Let's move into the solution. Put the the magic magnifying
- 14:02glass on the solution. Stop focusing on the problem.
- 14:05Look at the forest instead of the tree.
- 14:07What do I have good going on in my life today?
- 14:09What can I do that is positive instead of looking at all the
- 14:12problems? We all have problems.
- 14:14We all have circumstances. My perception is the problem
- 14:17here. I don't have any real problems
- 14:19today. I have an issue with perception.
- 14:22I'm looking at things with the glass always being half empty.
- 14:25The trick with this one is because you're talking about
- 14:28recovery. You're saying you're quoting the
- 14:30book. You're talking the talk.
- 14:32It feels like you're being seen, but you're not.
- 14:34You're performing recovery and I, I've done this many times, so
- 14:38it feels like you're performing recovery and that's the
- 14:41difference. Am I performing or am I doing?
- 14:43Am I actually practicing integrity when nobody is
- 14:47looking? Am I doing the right thing, The
- 14:49small little insignificant, seemingly insignificant right
- 14:52thing? Why?
- 14:53It outlives the drink. Using was, for a lot of us, a
- 14:56way to be in the room without being in the room sober.
- 15:00The polished story does the same job.
- 15:02Looks like presence functions like absence.
- 15:06If I keep telling you that I overcame this terrible addiction
- 15:10and my rock bottom was getting kicked out of a hotel and that's
- 15:13all I focus on is how I got through addiction, I keep
- 15:16telling you that this is how I got through this thing that can
- 15:20be beneficial to a lot of people, but not yourself.
- 15:22If I'm continuing, if I'm continuing to tell the story of
- 15:27how I triumphed, said circumstance, said hurdle, I am
- 15:31not actually getting current. I need to talk about what I'm
- 15:34going through right now, not how I got through that thing two
- 15:38weeks ago. That's beneficial to a lot of
- 15:40people, don't get me wrong. But if I'm not getting current
- 15:43in my recovery, if I'm not telling you that I am just
- 15:45thinking about money every single day and I'm scared I'm
- 15:48going to lose my house and I'm scared my wife's going to leave
- 15:50me and I'm scared. But whatever that thing is, my
- 15:53fears, if I'm not getting current, if I'm not journaling
- 15:55about that every single night, which some nights I do and some
- 15:57nights I don't. If I'm not putting an inventory,
- 16:00a daily inventory together and getting open and honest with
- 16:03myself and looking for solutions to move through it, asking for
- 16:06help, I'm fucked, man I'm fucked.
- 16:09That is a good barometer to know where you're at in recovery.
- 16:12Are you getting current? Are you talking about what's
- 16:14currently going on, or are you just letting resistance run the
- 16:18show? I'll do it next week or I'll do
- 16:20it the week after that. You're the best part about this
- 16:23is it's so easy to jump back on the horse to get through
- 16:26resistance. It's a lot harder when you
- 16:29relapse to come back in. I always say that.
- 16:31Catch it while you're in the middle of it.
- 16:33You never know. You share openly about something
- 16:35that you're struggling with currently.
- 16:37It might save someone else's life.
- 16:38Somebody else might have the answer to it.
- 16:40If you're struggling with divorce right now or separation,
- 16:43you share about it at a recovery space or with someone you trust.
- 16:46They might have an answer for you.
- 16:47They might have another way through that resistance.
- 16:50Get open, get honest. It helps me every single time I
- 16:53do, and it's hard. It's uncomfortable.
- 16:54I don't want people to know that I'm not perfect.
- 16:57I don't want people to know that I have struggles.
- 16:59The more I share about it, the better my life gets.
- 17:01Today, I have a lot of resistance in my life.
- 17:04I have a lot of resistance specifically to plans to going
- 17:07out to do things. Whenever I always talk about
- 17:09this, but whenever I say something, see something in my
- 17:12calendar that doesn't directly benefit me, I my brain is like,
- 17:16oh, that's going to suck. I'm telling this story.
- 17:18I'm spinning this movie about how I don't want to go to that
- 17:21thing and I spend so much time trying to get out or avoid or
- 17:27poor me self pity sad situations that I could just be accepting
- 17:31it and being present in the moment.
- 17:34It takes me out of my the moment when I am suffering.
- 17:38I'm just suffering because I'm thinking about myself and how I
- 17:40don't want to do this thing later when I could just be
- 17:43accepting it and praying, asking for help to look at how I can
- 17:47bring something to the situation instead of what can I get from
- 17:50it. What can I bring to the meeting
- 17:52instead of what can I take from it.
- 17:54The more I am a giver in my life today over a taker, the better
- 17:59my life is. If I can show up and give.
- 18:02Bring good conversation to the scenario, bring good vibes, good
- 18:07energy to whatever environment I am going to, whatever plans I
- 18:10have. That is a better way to live and
- 18:12I am happier that way because I get, if I give without
- 18:17expectation, I receive without limitation.
- 18:21Think about that for a moment. What can I bring to this
- 18:24scenario instead of man, this is going to suck, I have to do
- 18:27this, I have to go to this thing and Oh my God, poor me.
- 18:29I can't believe how do I get out of this?
- 18:32That's suffering. That is the definition of
- 18:34suffering for me. Remember pain times.
- 18:37Resistance is suffering. So pain is going to happen in my
- 18:41life. I'm going to experience pain.
- 18:43Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.
- 18:45How much suffering? How much resistance?
- 18:48Sorry, how much resistance am I applying to this pain that is
- 18:52fully in your control? Am I sitting in it and crying
- 18:54about it? Doesn't mean that you don't get
- 18:56to grieve over sad scenarios or feel sad.
- 19:00Feel sad but don't sit in it. Look how I can get through the
- 19:04resistance instead of let it control my life and run the show
- 19:08and take over and drive the bus. Usually how can I be of service
