- 0:20Speaker 2: bring it. Bring it to her. Add Candace on air.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Don't tell Pooh your secrets. I can hold secrets. We'll
- 0:26Speaker 2: find out about that. But if you want to hit
- 0:28Speaker 2: up Pooh, Pooh on the radio. Either way, we just
- 0:30Speaker 2: want to get your secrets on. So go ahead.
- 0:32Speaker 1: I have a confession I've been carrying around for almost
- 0:35Speaker 1: two years now. And I'm honestly starting to question whether
- 0:39Speaker 1: I'm protecting my daughter or doing something she's going to
- 0:43Speaker 1: hate me for someday.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Your daughter? Okay. So it's a secret involving her. What's
- 0:48Speaker 2: going on?
- 0:48Speaker 1: Well, she's eight years old, and she believes that her
- 0:52Speaker 1: father has never tried to be part of her life,
- 0:56Speaker 1: but that's not true.
- 0:58Speaker 2: She believes her father hasn't tried to be a part
- 1:02Speaker 2: of her life? Right.
- 1:03Speaker 1: She hasn't seen him since she was like one year old.
- 1:06Speaker 1: And I mean, he and I had a really bad relationship,
- 1:10Speaker 1: eventually broke up. had a huge fight. He basically disappeared.
- 1:14Speaker 1: And at the time I heard he was having issues
- 1:18Speaker 1: with drugs and I, I knew he was involved with
- 1:20Speaker 1: some shady things when we were together. And although to
- 1:25Speaker 1: this day, I don't know everything he was doing, but
- 1:27Speaker 1: not a good influence. And for years we heard like
- 1:31Speaker 1: nothing from him.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Okay. So he, he just kind of disappeared and that
- 1:35Speaker 2: was it. And That's that's tough. So she was real young, obviously,
- 1:40Speaker 2: when that when that went down and she's eight now.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:43Speaker 2: OK. She is.
- 1:44Speaker 1: And I I've moved on. You know, it was really
- 1:47Speaker 1: hard at the beginning being a single mom, but I'm
- 1:49Speaker 1: married now. And my daughter loves my husband. She calls
- 1:53Speaker 1: him dad. I mean, he's really the only dad she's
- 1:56Speaker 1: ever known. She never asks about her biological father. And
- 2:00Speaker 1: this is her life, her normal, happy life right now.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Right. OK, so that which is a great thing for her.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Did something else happen since then? Yes.
- 2:09Speaker 1: So about a year and a half, maybe two years ago,
- 2:13Speaker 1: her biological dad suddenly reached out to me. I ignored him.
- 2:17Speaker 1: He texted again. I ignored him again. Then he contacted
- 2:21Speaker 1: my mom, which sucks. Then she got involved. But then...
- 2:26Speaker 1: You know, he's written letters, he's called, he said he
- 2:29Speaker 1: got sober, which I know people can change if that happens.
- 2:32Speaker 1: He apologized. He said he totally changed his life, turned
- 2:36Speaker 1: it around, and that one of his biggest regrets is
- 2:38Speaker 1: abandoning his daughter. And so at first I thought, you know,
- 2:43Speaker 1: I know him. Give it a month. He'll disappear.
- 2:45Speaker 2: But he hasn't.
- 2:47Speaker 1: And yeah. So now I have this, you know, conundrum.
- 2:51Speaker 1: I don't know this issue because it's been well over
- 2:53Speaker 1: a year. He's still trying. And my daughter still has
- 2:56Speaker 1: no idea. So now I'm starting to feel conflicted. Like
- 3:00Speaker 1: I've never shown her the letters. I've never told her
- 3:02Speaker 1: he's called. My mom knows what's happening, but I've asked
- 3:06Speaker 1: her not to say anything and she hasn't. But I'm
- 3:09Speaker 1: struggling with it. But she's eight. I mean, she's a
- 3:12Speaker 1: little kid still.
- 3:14Speaker 2: We've had something similar to this before, a little bit different.
- 3:17Speaker 2: But I mean, the hard part is, is I know
- 3:20Speaker 2: you're a mom and you're you want to protect her. And,
- 3:23Speaker 2: you know, of course. You have her best interest in mind.
- 3:27Speaker 2: So I get why you wouldn't say right away. Yeah, no,
- 3:31Speaker 2: I would do the same way. Yeah, you want to
- 3:32Speaker 2: protect because. You don't want to get burned. What is
- 3:35Speaker 2: this guy? You don't know if he's going to disappear
- 3:38Speaker 2: after one call. Yeah, it's not like it's just your
- 3:40Speaker 2: feelings on the line now.
- 3:41Speaker 1: It's hers too.
- 3:43Speaker 2: But what do you do at this point?
- 3:44Speaker 1: I don't know what I'm supposed to do because, I mean,
- 3:47Speaker 1: of course, especially someone who's struggled with drugs, I mean,
- 3:50Speaker 1: of course he could disappear. What if I brought him
- 3:53Speaker 1: back into her life because he says he's changed and
- 3:56Speaker 1: I believe him and then I watch her get her
- 3:58Speaker 1: heart broken if he disappears again? I mean, then I'd
- 4:01Speaker 1: regret that.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Yeah. But, you know, there's also another side of this, too, that's...
- 4:06Speaker 2: If he really wants to make it happen, he can
- 4:08Speaker 2: get the courts involved. And I do see, you know,
- 4:11Speaker 2: from the father's standpoint, of course, he does have the right.
- 4:14Speaker 2: And I'm not saying he didn't. He did definitely screw
- 4:16Speaker 2: up that right when he left. Yeah. So you can't
- 4:20Speaker 2: come in and out. So you do have to prove yourself.
- 4:22Speaker 2: In my world, you have to prove yourself that you're
- 4:25Speaker 2: You're OK to be around our child.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Yeah. And maybe somehow he could prove himself to me first.
- 4:30Speaker 1: But he has time. He has been trying, you know,
- 4:33Speaker 1: I mean, consistently. But she has a dad. She has stability.
- 4:37Speaker 1: She's happy. She doesn't even ask about her her bio
- 4:41Speaker 1: dad or why doesn't he love her? It's not even, like,
- 4:44Speaker 1: on her mind, but, you know, she's eight. Like, what
- 4:46Speaker 1: happens when she's a teenager? And then what if she
- 4:49Speaker 1: gets pissed off and she finds out he did try?
- 4:52Speaker 2: Right.
- 4:52Speaker 1: What happens if she sees the letters someday and then
- 4:56Speaker 1: she asks, oh, why didn't you let him see me?
- 4:59Speaker 1: And then, you know, I'm the person who stopped it.
- 5:02Speaker 2: I can see why you don't trust him, is my point. Yeah.
- 5:05Speaker 2: And I'll be honest, on a personal level, like, you know,
- 5:08Speaker 2: I didn't deal with this exact situation, but I will
- 5:10Speaker 2: say that my mom was– At a certain point with
- 5:13Speaker 2: my dad kind of leaving and not being in the picture,
- 5:15Speaker 2: my mom eventually told me, I don't want to say
- 5:19Speaker 2: the truth. She told me enough for me to kind
- 5:21Speaker 2: of make sense of it. And the older I got,
- 5:23Speaker 2: she would tell me more. She never bad mouthed him.
- 5:25Speaker 2: She never talked bad. bad about him and he would
- 5:27Speaker 2: come around every once in a while. And then I
- 5:30Speaker 2: would wonder why he didn't. And she would eventually tell me, well,
- 5:34Speaker 2: this is what he deals with. And you know, this
- 5:37Speaker 2: is why he doesn't, it has nothing to do with you.
- 5:38Speaker 2: And she was honest with me because at that age,
- 5:40Speaker 2: I was mature for my age. So I could, I
- 5:43Speaker 2: could understand what was happening. I think she handled the
- 5:46Speaker 2: right way. It was like, I knew what was happening.
- 5:48Speaker 2: I knew he had problems with alcohol when I was
- 5:50Speaker 2: a teenager. I realized that, but She didn't tell me
- 5:52Speaker 2: that when I was eight. Right. But she told me
- 5:54Speaker 2: when I was older and then it all made sense. Yeah.
- 5:57Speaker 2: So I think you just got to trust your gut. Yeah. Yeah.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Maybe I'll change my mind. It's just hard to think
- 6:03Speaker 1: into the future like what might happen.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Yeah. Right. And, you know, if this guy really did
- 6:08Speaker 2: change his life, then give him the credit and maybe
- 6:10Speaker 2: you do give him a chance. But maybe that's a
- 6:13Speaker 2: very slow process. Yeah. That involves a counselor and a
- 6:16Speaker 2: professional and people involved, you know? Yeah. That's true.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Well, thank you, guys. I appreciate your listening and giving ideas.
- 6:24Speaker 2: You're welcome. Absolutely. Well, thank you and good luck. And
- 6:27Speaker 2: if you get a chance, let us know what happens.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Okay, I will. Thank you.
