- 0:00Offseason baseball, the big domino of the offseason fellow,
- 0:03you're a baseball guy, Juan Soto, who has had a very
- 0:06prolific career with the Padres and now with the Yankees,
- 0:11starting with the Nationals back in the day, one of the best
- 0:13players in the game, still in his prime, a 26 years old,
- 0:16signed a 15 year, $765 million deal.
- 0:22And it's not the largest ever in terms of average annual value,
- 0:26that's Ichiro, but it is the largest ever in terms.
- 0:28Of total. I'm sorry, Otani.
- 0:31And none of it is deferred, unlike Otani.
- 0:34So this is an incredible amount of money in baseball.
- 0:37Is this a like, obviously Soto is worth it because that's what
- 0:41he got. And if you look at his numbers
- 0:43and what he does, he's a great player.
- 0:45But is this good for the game? Is it good that a rich owner
- 0:49like Cohen with the Mets can just go out and buy one of the
- 0:54best players in the game a year after the Dodgers with their
- 0:57wealthy ownership bought the best player in the game when he
- 1:01came up in in in my is that is that a good thing?
- 1:05It feels icky to me. I don't know.
- 1:07Not that he got the money. I'm I, I don't know, problem
- 1:09with Solo getting as much money as he want.
- 1:10My thing is more of big picture for the game.
- 1:13Is this a good thing? Well, I'll start with I am
- 1:17always is it relates to the money 'cause you said you don't
- 1:20care about it, but it's important.
- 1:22I think as you as as I frame this one up, that I would prefer
- 1:26that the money go to Juan Soto rather than Steve Cohen.
- 1:29Like I think the people playing the game should make money off
- 1:35of the game if that's the value that they could get.
- 1:38I'm looking at some somewhere in like a 5050 split.
- 1:42So what it says to me is I'll for a very long time, a lot of
- 1:46teams and a lot of owners made a ton of money and the players
- 1:49didn't. So I on the money side, I'm very
- 1:52happy for Juan Soto. You asked me the question, is it
- 1:55good for the game? I think it's great for the
- 1:57players. I I think it's fantastic.
- 2:00But funny enough, what's happening in baseball, and this
- 2:05also happens in basketball and in football, is that the middle
- 2:08class is actually the one that gets hurt the worst.
- 2:11Because you have your Wan Sotos of the world that are going to
- 2:14get, you know, $60 million a year.
- 2:16But then you're going to have a bunch of guys on rookie
- 2:18contracts that make, you know, $500,000 a year.
- 2:21So your roster ends up being constructed of the Wan Sotos.
- 2:26And then a lot of guys who are making, you know, let's be real
- 2:29here, as relatively low, like not low to the average American,
- 2:34but low in terms of an overall roster.
- 2:37And the guys that kind of get cut out here are the guys that
- 2:40are in the because all of a sudden there isn't as much
- 2:44willingness to pay those players that much money because they
- 2:47have so much money invested in the top tier players.
- 2:50With the exception of a few franchises.
- 2:54With the exception of a few franchises.
- 2:55But just the last thing I'm going to say on this, if the
- 2:58Mets have proven anything in our lifetime, it's that spending
- 3:02money on players does not guarantee results.
- 3:05And that's why I don't think it's necessarily bad for the
- 3:07game, because it's just as likely that a well run Tampa Bay
- 3:11Rays organization is going to make the playoffs as the New
- 3:15York Mets. Let me give you a theory that
- 3:19I'm not sure I even totally believe, but I think it kind of
- 3:22explains my point of why I said it's not good because I agree
- 3:24with you. It's great for Soto.
- 3:26I I have no, I don't care about owners, you know, losing their
- 3:29money. They'll somehow be fine.
- 3:31They'll figure it out. Yeah, they'll figure it out, I
- 3:33think. But here is my theory.
- 3:37I think that the combination of owners who were not willing to
- 3:43spend their money combined. So for instance, a big market
- 3:48situations that where they were a little bit cheap.
- 3:51Your beloved Pittsburgh Pirates? Who?
- 3:53Have the seven, the 7th. Wealthiest owner in sports?
- 3:57Right. But I'm talking about some of
- 3:58the big markets maybe not having the ideal combination of
- 4:01ownership that was both because remember you have to be both.
- 4:03You have to a be willing to open the bank account and you have to
- 4:07be be good at it because as you pointed out, if you're not good
- 4:10at it, it doesn't matter, right. So I think because you have had
- 4:14franchises in some of these big markets like remember the old
- 4:17Dodgers owner who names whose name escaped me like lost his
- 4:21fortune and and they were down on their he had to like sell the
- 4:23team and had no money for a while as the freaking owner of
- 4:27the Dodgers. My point is, I think baseball
- 4:30has benefited to some degree because the huge revenue teams,
- 4:36primarily, I'm talking about the Dodgers, the Yankees, the Mets,
- 4:39maybe, I guess you should, maybe the Red Sox, right?
- 4:42Cubs. I think baseball has benefited
- 4:44because those teams didn't have very wealthy owners willing to
- 4:49spend huge amounts of money, very competent organizations and
- 4:53identifying talent at the same time.
- 4:56And throw on top of that the well you and I have talked about
- 5:00before, the randomness of the postseason format in baseball
- 5:04and how it doesn't necessarily translate.
- 5:06Although this year wasn't it, did the Yankees and the Dodgers
- 5:11were the two best teams during that?
- 5:13Weren't they both the one seeds and they both made it to the
- 5:15World Series? But that that didn't that hasn't
- 5:18happened much in recent years. If you start to see that
- 5:22happening more where the the teams who are the one and two
- 5:26seeds make it to the World Series.
- 5:30And if the Dodgers, Yankees and Mets continue to have competent
- 5:34ownership and front office is willing to spend a ton of money,
- 5:38we the gap is so big now the money is so massive that the
- 5:45Dodgers, the Mets, the Yankees and maybe the Red Sox are going
- 5:49to be in it every single year. Yeah, but that's always been the
- 5:53case. That has not that has not been
- 5:55the case. Go back and look, I mean, God,
- 5:57the Mets have been awful. We've had a lot of variation in
- 6:00World Series winners. The.
- 6:01Mets are an outlier. They don't count.
- 6:04And the Yankees hadn't been before.
- 6:06This year wasn't the last time they were in the World Series.
- 6:08The early 2000s. Yeah, it's 2000.
- 6:10Nine, yeah. So I'm so my point is it has not
- 6:13been the case. But they've been competitive,
- 6:14they've been there. I think they've only missed the
- 6:17playoff one time. That's true, but but that's not
- 6:20what I'm talking about. I'm talking about domination.
- 6:22I'm talking about year after year being at the top of the
- 6:27standings. I mean, the Dodgers have been
- 6:29great for a long time. The Dodgers had two world.
- 6:31Series they did, but as I said, if you go back again 5-10 years,
- 6:35that wasn't the case. They've been really good for a
- 6:37while. But my point is maybe because
- 6:40you didn't have the the right decision makers, you had the
- 6:45weirdness of the format, maybe that obscured what is a
- 6:49potential problem for baseball, which is as long as teams have
- 6:53owners who are rich in these big markets, who are willing to
- 6:56spend the money because we know they're rich and they have
- 6:59competent ownership, they're going to dominate the sport.
- 7:02And and the teams that don't are going to be at a severe
- 7:05disadvantage. And yes, the Rays are really one
- 7:08organizations will still make the post season from time to
- 7:11time, maybe get in a run here or there, maybe a team like even
- 7:15even the Pirates or somebody catch lightning in a bottle.
- 7:17Stop it. But my point is, that is why I
- 7:22don't like the Sodo deal, because it shows you the giant
- 7:25gaping flaw in my opinion in the baseball system, which is the
- 7:29lack of any kind of salary cap. Or cap.
- 7:34No, no salary cap. I hate the salary cap.
- 7:37I hate it. But what happens if the Mets and
- 7:40the Yankees and the and the Dodgers just win every single
- 7:43year? One of the three?
- 7:45But that's not. Going to happen.
- 7:47They're going to be in the mix. They're going to be in the
- 7:49playoffs. Because the margins in baseball
- 7:52are so small. The difference between Juan
- 7:55Soto's on base percentage and Bryce Harper's on base
- 7:59percentage is literally 3%. Juan Soto reaches base 3% more
- 8:05than Bryce Harper, even though Bryce Harper makes half as much
- 8:08money as Juan Soto. But here's Here's the thing
- 8:11though. The Dodgers lost like their
- 8:14higher pitching staff, and they still did what they.
- 8:18Did this because the margins in baseball are so thin.
- 8:21This is what I'm trying to explain.
- 8:23To you, but it was because they had a $350 million payroll, way
- 8:26more than almost any other team. So my point is when the when the
- 8:30well. Sure.
- 8:30That's the advantage of being the Yankees.
- 8:32If the Pirates best players get hurt, obviously they're not
- 8:36still going to be able to compete.
- 8:37That's a real difference, sure, But this idea that they're just
- 8:41going to win all the time, I I'm not buying it.
- 8:44I think when the margin you're, you're right that the margins
- 8:47are thin when the gap, let me try to say as articulately as I
- 8:50can, when the gap in payroll is fairly minimal, then the
- 8:57randomness, the closeness, the playoff format will get you a
- 9:02huge variation in competitiveness in the league,
- 9:07right? My point is as that gap expands
- 9:11and we are at a record expansion of it right now, right between
- 9:15the bottom and the top, we've never seen it like this.
- 9:18As that happens, the randomness becomes less and less of a
- 9:24factor because now the talent is more and more collected at one
- 9:27end. And what I'm saying to you is if
- 9:29you get to a point like the Dodgers have been absolutely
- 9:33dominant for the last, what, 5-6, seven years, if they keep
- 9:37doing that for the next 5-6 seven years and the Yankees are
- 9:40that like that and the Mets are like that, I just think that's
- 9:43not great for the sport, you know what I'm saying?
- 9:45Like, don't you think there comes a point where the money
- 9:47discrepancy is so big? I think it's incredibly.
- 9:51Changes the game. I think it's incredibly
- 9:53important that the major market teams in baseball are good
- 9:57because when your World Series is the Diamondbacks versus, you
- 10:01know, whoever, it's bad for the for the sport.
- 10:04It just is. It's the same thing in the NBA
- 10:06and the only The only exception here is the NFL.
- 10:10It's the only one. You you got to put that off to
- 10:12the side because that's such an outlier.
- 10:14But baseball now it is a regional sport.
- 10:17The I I did want to say the thing that shocks me about the
- 10:20Juan Soto contract in general is that Juan Soto is not a star.
- 10:24He's not a star. Shohei Otat no in in the world.
- 10:29Oh, right, right. Like.
- 10:30In the. World he's a.
- 10:32Great baseball player. And you know, what's going to
- 10:34happen is he's going to be a great baseball player in New
- 10:37York probably for the next 15 years.
- 10:39And that's really cool. But the idea that someone who is
- 10:42not like transcendent like in popular culture, like Otani's
- 10:48worth $600 million because you get the entire country of Japan,
- 10:53like when you give Otani $60 million, you get all the
- 10:56advertising, you get television in Japan, you get all the things
- 10:59that come along with Japanese media.
- 11:01You get the celebrity that is Shohei Otani with Juan Soto.
- 11:05You just, and with due respect, you get a Dominican guy who can
- 11:08smash a baseball. And that's the part of
- 11:11$765,000,000 that really blows me away.
- 11:14What I will say is that I commend Steve Cohen for giving
- 11:18Juan so to this contract because he's trying to do something with
- 11:22the New York Mets that has never been done.
- 11:25They've never been able to get out of the shadow of the New
- 11:27York Yankees. The coolest part about the Mets
- 11:30is that today they, for one day they are cooler than the Yankees
- 11:35because they got a great, great player.
- 11:38Will they be able to sustain that as the Yankees have for 100
- 11:41years? I severely doubt it because I
- 11:44know you grew up a Mets fan even though you never visited in New
- 11:47York. You were also a Duke fan.
- 11:50But I I was. Yeah, I don't know what I was
- 11:53thinking. All right, Speaking of of
- 11:55college, Forge, Bryan, College Football Playoff rankings came
- 11:59out. Do do you have any big problems
- 12:01with it? I mean the big controversy, I
- 12:03guess if it was a controversy was Alabama getting the last at
- 12:06large spot. I'm sorry, SMU getting last a
- 12:10large spot over Alabama. SMU would not play our Penn
- 12:13State or or my Penn State Indy lines on December 21st, which
- 12:17will be cool to see a playoff game in Happy Valley.
- 12:19I think they made the right call.
- 12:22Alabama that lost to Oklahoma was just so devastating.
- 12:24I have no problem with it, but but the drama is kind of the
- 12:27point I think. I think overall the I the 12
- 12:30team playoff was a smashing success this year.
- 12:33Like I said, it made me more interested in the college
- 12:35football regular season than I have been in a long time.
- 12:38And having some of that controversy was great.
- 12:41And look at these blue bloods that you still have in even
- 12:44though Alabama isn't in. You have Texas hosting Clemson,
- 12:47you have Tennessee and Ohio State.
- 12:49You have Penn State in there. Notre Dame's going to get a home
- 12:52playoff game. Georgia, Oregon, Boise, who's
- 12:54been one of the best programs in college football the last decade
- 12:57and a half. So overall, I'm very happy with
- 13:00the playoff. What?
- 13:00What say you? This was like one of the
- 13:04weirdest reactions I've ever had to something like this.
- 13:06When I woke up the next day and I and Sunday, because I didn't
- 13:10really look on Saturday and I saw it, I went, yeah, that's
- 13:13right. Like, you know what I mean?
- 13:15Like I read it and went, this makes sense to me based on the
- 13:18outcomes that I saw. So in that regard, I think the
- 13:22committee did a fairly good job. Look, if if you have a four team
- 13:27playoff, you're going to argue about 5:00 and 6:00.
- 13:30If you have an 8 team playoff, you're going to argue about 9:00
- 13:33and 10:00. And sure enough we have a 12
- 13:34team playoff. So we're going to argue about 13
- 13:36and 14. Like that's just how it's going
- 13:39to be. You could expand it.
- 13:40There is no perfect way to do it.
- 13:42There are too many teams, there are too many good players.
- 13:46You can't guarantee the matchups every year.
- 13:49Like the whole point of college football is to argue about it.
- 13:52So in that way this is perfect. It is, and I would much rather
- 13:56argue about #12 and 13 than I would four and five.
- 13:59I think that's better for the game if you're arguing at that
- 14:01level. I all these people that have
- 14:02said, oh, you can't expand beyond four teams, it'll
- 14:04diminish the significance of the regular season.
- 14:06I always thought that was Oh no it.
- 14:08Made it better. This year, prove it.
- 14:09It made it better. Much better.
- 14:11I think it made it better and I think it is really cool that
- 14:13Indiana made it. Yeah, I think it's really cool
- 14:16that SMU made it. I think it's really cool that
- 14:18Boise got a buy because I mean. See, I don't like that.
- 14:22That's my one critique. And I think the one thing they
- 14:24will change, I think they will change that next year, I guess
- 14:26the year after. I don't think the conference
- 14:28champions will get automatic buys.
- 14:30I don't think they should. Getting into the field is
- 14:32enough. It may very well.
- 14:35That Arizona State should not have gotten the buys.
- 14:37Arizona State did not get a buy, did they?
- 14:42They Yeah, they did. Because Clemson.
- 14:44Oh, that's right. That's right, Clemson.
- 14:46Won the ACC, so they're the 12. Because they're the 12.
- 14:50I, I just think that, like I said, it's never going to be
- 14:56perfect. And I think this is as close as
- 14:58you're really going to get, man. I think the regular season was
- 15:01much more interesting. I mean, if you're an Alabama
- 15:04fan, I mean, you had three losses, man.
- 15:06There's no other team in there with three losses.
- 15:09Don't lose to Vanderbilt. Don't lose to Oklahoma by three
- 15:12touchdowns. I kind of feel I would have
- 15:14liked, like I think that Miami is a better team than Indiana.
- 15:18Like I just do. I think Indiana played a
- 15:20fraudulent schedule, but like, whatever.
- 15:23I mean that that's what I was saying though at the beginning
- 15:26is like it's not Indiana's fault they had a weak schedule this
- 15:29year. They could have the exact same
- 15:31schedule next year and it could turn out those teams are
- 15:33amazing. I mean, people had Florida State
- 15:36on their schedule this year and thought that was going to be a
- 15:38hard game. It turned out they stink, You
- 15:40know, So like I said, man, I think these playoffs are going
- 15:43to be great. I don't like that it's going to
- 15:44run until like January 20th to get all this taken care of.
- 15:48But I mean, you know, whatever, I'll still watch.
- 15:51Yeah, those home playoff games in in stadiums are going to be
- 15:54awesome to see. I mean, a freaking home game at
- 15:56Penn State, a home playoff game at Notre Dame.
- 15:57That's pretty cool. I think.
- 16:00Well, the only tweak, 12 is a great number.
- 16:02The only tweak they need to make in my opinion again is just seed
- 16:05the teams one through 12. If you want to give automatic
- 16:07bids into the 12 for five conference champs, I'm fine with
- 16:10that. But you see them one through 12
- 16:11because what you have this year is Penn State as the sixth seed
- 16:14and Texas as the five arguably have an easier.
- 16:18Path. Than the number one and #2
- 16:20seeds, like for instance, if you compare Penn State, Penn State
- 16:24lost that Big 12 game championship came to Oregon,
- 16:26right? So Penn State as a result got
- 16:28the six seed. They play SMU.
- 16:30SMU. Then they play because of.
- 16:32The third one beat up SMU. Then they play Boise.
- 16:35They'll beat Boise cause Boise has no defense.
- 16:37Whereas Oregon will have, yes, they'll get the bye, but then
- 16:41they have to play freaking Tennessee or Ohio State,
- 16:44probably Ohio State in the second round.
- 16:46So again, Penn State almost, even though they wanted to win
- 16:50that game, obviously, and they tried to win that game, it
- 16:52actually gave them a slightly easier path to lose the game in
- 16:55the conference championship that that should not.
- 16:58I got about no good. Do you have anything else on
- 17:00this? Yeah, My proposal for I think
- 17:04the one thing that's happened because of the 12 team playoffs
- 17:06and I I don't think this is arguable, is the other Bulls
- 17:09don't matter at all. Like they're pretty much just a
- 17:12nice class trip that everyone gets to take, even though like
- 17:15international travel is very common these days.
- 17:18So yay, I get to go to Cleveland and play, play in the Fat guy's
- 17:22Tire Bowl. So these other bowls, like they
- 17:24really don't mean anything. Like it's hard to drum up
- 17:26excitement for them, except for gambling, obviously.
- 17:29I mean, they're going to get gambled on.
- 17:30That's why they exist. So I'm proposing the A12 team
- 17:34NIT, maybe like a 16 team NIT because now Miami and Alabama
- 17:42who didn't get into the big playoff and are all upset about
- 17:45it, Well go win the NIT. Well, I love.
- 17:49That that's a great that would make us at least somewhat
- 17:51interesting. And they can still have the
- 17:53Cheetos bowl and the toilet bowl and who gives a shit bowl around
- 17:57in in the NIT. Wait, so you're telling me
- 17:59you're not excited for this Jackson State South Carolina
- 18:02State Cricket Celebration Bowl coming up this Saturday?
- 18:05That that is something that cricket should sponsor.
- 18:07You're not gonna. You're not interested in that at
- 18:10all or the staff DNA curable on Friday, December 20th between
- 18:15Ohio and Jacksonville State. No, it's going to be hard for me
- 18:18to get fired up. But no, they exist because
- 18:20people bet on them and there is revenue for those towns because
- 18:25hotels and like this and that. So I do understand why they
- 18:27exist. I just think that an NIT Type 12
- 18:31team playoff would also work with.
- 18:34You know, 13. Through 24.
- 18:37You could keep these same sites. I agree with you.
- 18:39I think that's a great idea. That's the best idea.
- 18:41I think you back we get. More football.
