Sam: Hey, welcome to 7 Minute Books. I'm Sam, and today we're talking about Start, Stay, or Leave by Trey Gowdy. Sophie, I have to ask, what made you want to dig into this one?
• 0:13
Sophie: Honestly, the title alone grabbed me. We're all constantly making these three decisions, whether it's a job, a relationship, or just a habit we're trying to build. And Gowdy's whole point is that most of us make them for the wrong reasons. He's a former federal prosecutor and congressman, so he's been in some high-stakes rooms. But the book isn't about politics at all. It's about how to know when to begin something, when to commit, and when to walk away.
• 0:41
Sam: Right. And the first thing he does is flip the script on starting. We're taught that every new beginning has to come from passion or some grand five-year plan. He says that's not always true.
• 0:53
Sophie: Exactly. He talks about his own decision to run for Congress, which was not something he ever dreamed of doing. It came from a sense of duty, a conviction that he could contribute something at a specific moment. He says the question isn't 'What will make me happy?' It's 'What is required of me?' and 'What am I uniquely positioned to do?'
• 1:15
Sam: That's such a different frame. I think a lot of us start things to fill a void or to get approval from someone else. He warns against that. A start should be an extension of who you are, not an escape from it.
• 1:28
Sophie: And he's clear that the beginning will be hard and unglamorous. You have to count the cost before you take the first step. That part really resonated with me because I've definitely started things without thinking through the cost.
• 1:41
Sam: Yeah, same here. Then once you've started, the real challenge is staying. And he says staying is the hardest of the three because it's made daily, often without any external validation.
• 1:54
Sophie: Right. He dismantles the idea that quitting is always weakness. Staying is an active choice, not a default. You don't stay just because you're comfortable or afraid. You stay because the mission is still worth it and you're still growing.
• 2:10
Sam: He uses the marathon metaphor. There are miles of monotony and pain, and the decision to stay is made in those miles. It's about honoring the person you were when you started.
• 2:22
Sophie: And he gives a litmus test. Are you still the right person for this role? Are your skills still being used? Is your presence still adding value? If the answer is no, then staying might just be inertia.
• 2:35
Sam: I actually pushed back on this a little when I first read it. I thought, isn't there value in loyalty and perseverance even when it's hard? And he addresses that. He says there's a difference between short-term suffering for a long-term goal and chronic misery that serves no one.
• 2:53
Sophie: Exactly. The key is to constantly reassess your motivations. Are you staying because of a calling or because of a comfort zone? Are you being refined by the hardship or just enduring it? That's a tough question to ask yourself honestly.
• 3:08
Sam: It really is. And then we get to leaving, which is the one that scares most people. In our culture, leaving feels like failure. But Gowdy reframes it as courage and strategic wisdom.
• 3:21
Sophie: He tells the story of leaving Congress after seven terms, at the height of his influence, because he felt his skills were better suited elsewhere. He didn't leave because he failed. He left because he succeeded in understanding that his season there was over.
• 3:37
Sam: That's such a powerful reframe. Leaving is about leveling up to the next version of your life. It's not giving up. It's acknowledging that you've changed or the situation has changed.
• 3:48
Sophie: And he gives clear signals. One is when your presence is no longer needed or you're no longer the best person for the job. Another is when the cost of staying, to your health or relationships or integrity, outweighs the benefit.
• 4:03
Sam: He also warns against staying out of obligation to the past. You can't lead from resentment or exhaustion. Leaving is about reclaiming your agency.
• 4:12
Sophie: And underpinning all three decisions is identity. He argues that you can't make these decisions well until you separate your identity from your role. You are not your job title or your relationship status or your net worth.
• 4:25
Sam: That's the part that got me. When you conflate who you are with what you do, any threat to your role feels like a threat to your existence. That makes it nearly impossible to leave a bad situation because leaving feels like dying.
• 4:39
Sophie: Right. The antidote is to build a sense of self rooted in unchanging principles like character, values, faith, and and relationships. When your identity is secure, you can take risks. You can stay when it's hard and leave when it's necessary because your worth isn't on the line.
• 4:58
Sam: He also talks about asking the right questions. Most of us ask 'What will make me happy?' or 'What's the easiest path?' He suggests replacing those with 'What is my duty?' 'What is the right thing to do?' and 'What is best for the people I'm responsible for?'
• 5:14
Sophie: And 'What story do I want to tell?' That one really stuck with me. At the end of your life, you won't be remembered for how many times you started something. You'll be remembered for how you finished what mattered.
• 5:29
Sam: Yeah. And fear is a constant companion in all three phases. We fear the uncertainty of starting, the monotony of staying, and the judgment of leaving. He doesn't promise a life without fear, but he says courage is acting in spite of it.
• 5:46
Sophie: He encourages readers to differentiate between rational fear, which warns you of genuine danger, and irrational fear, which is just your ego trying to keep you safe. The goal isn't to eliminate fear but to make sure it's not the primary driver of your choices.
• 6:02
Sam: And he emphasizes that how you leave is just as important as how you stay. Leaving well means being honest, grateful, and not burning bridges. Finishing your work and handing over the baton.
• 6:16
Sophie: A bad exit can tarnish an entire career of good work. That's a sobering thought.
• 6:22
Sam: So the big takeaway for me is that life is a series of seasons. Not every season is a harvest. Some are for planting, some for tending, and some for rest. The wisdom is knowing which season you're in.
• 6:36
Sophie: And if you want to go deeper, the whole library is over at 7minutebooks.com/app, with over 6,000 fiction and nonfiction titles you can read or listen to in any language. It starts at $2.99 a month, $9.99 a year, or $19.99 once for lifetime access.
• 6:59
Sam: The tragedy isn't making the wrong choice. It's refusing to make any choice at all. You have the power to choose. You're not a victim of circumstance.
• 7:08
Sophie: Exactly. Start, stay, or leave, but do it with intention. We'll see you in the next one.
