Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more disgrace Land in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:30Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:35Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:37Speaker 1: episode or Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig
- 0:40Speaker 1: into the dirt. On this bonus episode, we are talking
- 0:43Speaker 1: about this week's full episode subject, George Michael. We also
- 0:46Speaker 1: discuss those amazing music videos that were directed by future
- 0:50Speaker 1: A List filmmakers, as well as a special announcement that
- 0:54Speaker 1: we get into that is going to make your ears
- 0:56Speaker 1: very happy. And of course we get into your voicemails,
- 1:00Speaker 1: text DMS, emails and as always, a whole lot of rosies.
- 1:03Speaker 1: All right, disc goes, let's get into it. Arrowsmith, Billy
- 1:18Speaker 1: Idol and George Michael. All three of those artists were
- 1:22Speaker 1: part of the late eighties early nineties heavy rotation on MTV. Now,
- 1:26Speaker 1: if I asked you which of those artists was the
- 1:28Speaker 1: more criminal minded? Which of those artists was the batter
- 1:33Speaker 1: of the three hell Arrowsmith called themselves the bad Boys
- 1:36Speaker 1: of Boston. If I asked you which of those artists
- 1:39Speaker 1: were arrested the most, I doubt you'd answer George Michael.
- 1:44Speaker 1: I wouldn't yet That's the truth. George Michael was arrested
- 1:48Speaker 1: seven times in twelve years, seven times in just twelve years. Now,
- 1:52Speaker 1: Billy Idol had his fair share of run ins with
- 1:54Speaker 1: the law, and we're going to cover all of them
- 1:56Speaker 1: in an upcoming episode on Billy Idol in about a
- 1:58Speaker 1: month from now. And we of course got into all
- 2:01Speaker 1: of Aarosmith's transgressions, or most of them anyway, in a
- 2:04Speaker 1: previous episode of Disgraceland. But in this week's full episode,
- 2:07Speaker 1: George Michael seemed just designed to get arrested. At least
- 2:12Speaker 1: it seemed that way in the second half of his career.
- 2:16Speaker 1: I uncovered another strange connection about George Michael, Arrowsmith and
- 2:19Speaker 1: Billie Idol when I was thinking about putting together this
- 2:24Speaker 1: bonus episode and talking to you guys, And that connection
- 2:27Speaker 1: extends to other great eighties MTV era stars Madonna, Iggy Pop,
- 2:35Speaker 1: Don Henley, Michael Jackson in The Rolling Stones. Despite all
- 2:38Speaker 1: of those well with the exception of Michael Jackson. Despite
- 2:41Speaker 1: all those artists being covered in Disgraceland, they all share
- 2:44Speaker 1: something else in common with each other and with George Michael,
- 2:48Speaker 1: and that's the fact that they all made great videos
- 2:52Speaker 1: directed by the great David Fincher. We know David Fincher
- 2:56Speaker 1: now for his incredible film Seven Fight Club, ub Zodiac,
- 3:01Speaker 1: which is my favorite of Fincher's movies, The Social Network,
- 3:05Speaker 1: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Gone Girl, and a
- 3:09Speaker 1: lot more. But we don't really think of David Fincher,
- 3:14Speaker 1: at least I didn't. I'm sure some of you do,
- 3:16Speaker 1: because you're just more inclined to know this stuff than
- 3:19Speaker 1: I am. We don't think of David Fincher as a
- 3:22Speaker 1: video director, yet he directed a ton of videos in
- 3:26Speaker 1: the nineteen eighties, in the nineteen nineties. And for those
- 3:30Speaker 1: artists I just mentioned Billy Idol's Cradle of Love, which
- 3:33Speaker 1: is a great video. Aerosmith Jane's Got a Gun another
- 3:36Speaker 1: great video, great song too, by the way, For all
- 3:37Speaker 1: this shit I give Aerosmith, I love that song, Iggy
- 3:40Speaker 1: Pop's song Home, Madonna's Vogue. A ton of Madonna videos,
- 3:45Speaker 1: but Vogue is probably her most iconic of the ones
- 3:48Speaker 1: that Fincher has directed, and just too many more great
- 3:51Speaker 1: videos to list too many, but probably none better than
- 3:57Speaker 1: George Michael's Freedom ninety better known as just Freedom, a
- 4:01Speaker 1: video George Michael doesn't even appear in, but instead features
- 4:05Speaker 1: five countum five smoking hot, next level beautiful supermodels Linda Evangelista,
- 4:12Speaker 1: Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, Tatiana patitz am I saying that
- 4:16Speaker 1: correctly and probably the most beautiful woman in my teenage
- 4:19Speaker 1: eyes had ever seen on screen up to that point,
- 4:21Speaker 1: Sidney Crawford. Now this video comes out, of course, in
- 4:25Speaker 1: an era where the supermodel is being defined, is coming
- 4:29Speaker 1: into national prominence, is becoming iconic. This video exploded off
- 4:35Speaker 1: of the screen. George Michael completely outdoes himself. This video
- 4:39Speaker 1: is a fuck off to George Michael's record label, Sony.
- 4:43Speaker 1: George was in a sort of soft war with the
- 4:45Speaker 1: label and the executives over there for around his image
- 4:48Speaker 1: and the oversaturation of his image to the public via
- 4:54Speaker 1: the record labels just NonStop promotion in the demands they
- 4:58Speaker 1: put on him, and thus this video for his hit song,
- 5:01Speaker 1: he refused to be in it, which is pretty incredible.
- 5:05Speaker 1: You know, major pop star, major songwriter, major performer doesn't
- 5:08Speaker 1: want to be in a major video. But the video
- 5:10Speaker 1: is still a huge success. None of us cared because
- 5:13Speaker 1: it had fucking Cindy Crawford in it, not to mention
- 5:16Speaker 1: Linda Evangelista and all the others I mentioned. Now, knowing
- 5:20Speaker 1: what I now know, it's no surprise to me that
- 5:23Speaker 1: this video succeeded without featuring George Michael. And it's not
- 5:28Speaker 1: just because of the supermodel hotness that I was just
- 5:30Speaker 1: joking about. It's also because we now know that David Fincher,
- 5:33Speaker 1: who directed Freedom, is a genius behind the camera. That
- 5:36Speaker 1: wasn't He was known as a music video during that
- 5:39Speaker 1: music video director during that time. But yeah, I mean this,
- 5:42Speaker 1: there's quite a difference between directing great videos and great movies.
- 5:45Speaker 1: It's a huge difference. And we get into what it
- 5:47Speaker 1: takes to make a movie in the Scorsese episode a
- 5:49Speaker 1: couple episodes ago. So this could be thinking about what
- 5:54Speaker 1: other now famous directors directed huge music videos from back
- 5:59Speaker 1: in the day. And I looked into it, it's a
- 6:01Speaker 1: pretty incredible list. I kind of always got this is
- 6:03Speaker 1: always in the back of my mind, but I never
- 6:05Speaker 1: fully looked into it, and Again, when I was watching
- 6:08Speaker 1: these videos as a kid, when most of us were,
- 6:10Speaker 1: I didn't care who directed them. I had no concept
- 6:13Speaker 1: of that sort of thing, so net for now to me,
- 6:16Speaker 1: it's completely compelling. So anyways, in addition to David Fincher, you,
- 6:21Speaker 1: of course the obvious one, you have Spike Jones, director
- 6:24Speaker 1: of the films being John Malkovich in her with Joaquin Phoenix. Spike, however,
- 6:30Speaker 1: famously directed those incredible Beastie Boys videos from the nineteen nineties,
- 6:34Speaker 1: Sabotage and Sure Shot, but also videos for Weezer, the Breeders.
- 6:39Speaker 1: His Fat Boys Slim video is incredible, and there's a
- 6:42Speaker 1: ton of others by Spike Joones. Zack Snyder, Okay, massive
- 6:47Speaker 1: director who recently helmed the DC comics Batman franchise way
- 6:52Speaker 1: back in the day, directed Soul Asylums Somebody to Shove video,
- 6:55Speaker 1: which is a great song. He's directed others as well,
- 7:00Speaker 1: but none worth mentioning for my estimation than that Soul
- 7:04Speaker 1: Asylum video. Brian Depalmo, one of the greatest directors to
- 7:07Speaker 1: come out of the nineteen seventies, would later direct Bruce
- 7:09Speaker 1: Springsteen video and a pretty iconic one Bruce is Dancing
- 7:14Speaker 1: in the Dark, featuring an unknown actress at the time
- 7:16Speaker 1: by the name of Courtney Cox. A guy named Gore Verbinski,
- 7:20Speaker 1: the dude who directed the massively successful Pirates of the Caribbean,
- 7:24Speaker 1: also directed The Ring, the American version of the Ring
- 7:26Speaker 1: he directed Gore. He directed Bad Religion videos back in
- 7:30Speaker 1: the day, along with some others. He was even in
- 7:32Speaker 1: a band with Brett from Bad Religion for a moment.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Michael Bay. Okay, this is the guy who don't know
- 7:37Speaker 1: Michael Bay. He's got makes huge, huge action movies, Transformers
- 7:41Speaker 1: being I think the top of his IMDb. Michael Bay
- 7:45Speaker 1: got his start on MTV making videos from Meatloaf, Britney Fox.
- 7:49Speaker 1: If you remember Britney Fox hair Metal, which just kind
- 7:53Speaker 1: of makes sense. I don't care about Transformers and I
- 7:55Speaker 1: didn't care about Britney Fox. Finally, we gonna mention Brett Ratner, who,
- 7:59Speaker 1: before being canceled, made massive Hollywood films like Rush Hour
- 8:03Speaker 1: and X Men. He of course got to start directing
- 8:06Speaker 1: music videos, hip hop videos, Public Enemy, Wu Tang, Didy,
- 8:11Speaker 1: Michael Jackson, as well a ton of others. I think
- 8:13Speaker 1: he even did a Madonna video, a Love Courtney Love video,
- 8:17Speaker 1: a whole video or maybe a Courtney Love solo I
- 8:19Speaker 1: can't remember. Anyways, I found this all to be super interesting,
- 8:22Speaker 1: and I'm talking about it here this week specifically for
- 8:25Speaker 1: this reason that I'm going to get into here. I'm
- 8:27Speaker 1: of course interested in the history of Hollywood, just as
- 8:31Speaker 1: I'm interested in music. I'm especially interested in the intersection
- 8:34Speaker 1: of Hollywood and true crime, just as I'm interested in
- 8:36Speaker 1: the intersection of music history and true crime, which is
- 8:39Speaker 1: why a couple of years ago I launched a show
- 8:41Speaker 1: called bad Lands. Now, bad Lands looked into the crimes
- 8:46Speaker 1: of actors and actresses. For the most part, we did
- 8:49Speaker 1: do some episodes that looked into the crimes committed by
- 8:53Speaker 1: famous athletes. Badlands was supposed to be a fictional place
- 8:57Speaker 1: like Disgraceland for us to discuss any non music related
- 9:00Speaker 1: true crimes, but what we ended up doing is focusing
- 9:03Speaker 1: mostly on Hollywood and again some on sports. Now hosting
- 9:07Speaker 1: that show, hosting bad Lands and Disgraceland, it became too
- 9:11Speaker 1: much for me to do, pumping out new episodes every week,
- 9:15Speaker 1: doing these bonus episodes for two podcasts, and growing both
- 9:20Speaker 1: the shows, plus everything else I got going on. It
- 9:22Speaker 1: was just a lot in bad Lands was being neglected,
- 9:25Speaker 1: so we stopped producing new Badlands episodes. Anyways, what happened
- 9:29Speaker 1: to those episodes? Those episodes went away? Okay, they went
- 9:32Speaker 1: out of the feed. They're gone. I get asked all
- 9:34Speaker 1: the time from you guys, Hey, where'd the Badlands episodes go? Well,
- 9:38Speaker 1: we pulled them down for reasons that I'm not going
- 9:39Speaker 1: to get into here, but basically, we stopped producing episodes
- 9:42Speaker 1: of the show, new episodes, and we didn't have any
- 9:45Speaker 1: plan at that time to start producing new ones. So
- 9:50Speaker 1: that's one of the reasons. Having that archive of almost
- 9:53Speaker 1: one hundred plus episodes on Hollywood actors and actresses, having
- 9:57Speaker 1: those bad Lands episodes up, it didn't make sense. We
- 9:59Speaker 1: took them down and for some other reasons. Again I'm
- 10:01Speaker 1: not going to go into those here, but I am
- 10:04Speaker 1: here to tell you right now that a large swath
- 10:08Speaker 1: of those Badlands episodes are coming back, and they are
- 10:12Speaker 1: available for you to listen to right now in the
- 10:16Speaker 1: same bad Lands feed, but now titled simply Hollywoodland. Okay,
- 10:21Speaker 1: in the Hollywood Land feed right now, you'll be able
- 10:23Speaker 1: to hear me talking about the wild lives and true
- 10:26Speaker 1: crimes of people like James Dean Charlie Sheen, Sean Penn,
- 10:30Speaker 1: Drew Barrymore, Danny Trejo, Patty Hurst, Mel Gibson, so many more.
- 10:34Speaker 1: And all these hollywood Land episodes are produced by Double
- 10:37Speaker 1: Elvis in the exact same way as Disgraceland. If you're
- 10:41Speaker 1: new to Disgraceland, if you've joined this Disgraceland community in
- 10:44Speaker 1: the last year or so, these Hollywoodland episodes are produced
- 10:49Speaker 1: exactly like Disgraceland. Me at the Helm on the mic,
- 10:54Speaker 1: double Elvis production, all the sound design, all the edge
- 10:58Speaker 1: of your seat storytelling you've grown to love of. It's
- 11:00Speaker 1: all in hollywood Land. It's just a different subject, Okay,
- 11:03Speaker 1: It's just it's just Hollywood and not music. And right
- 11:06Speaker 1: now there's almost forty episodes available for you to listen to,
- 11:08Speaker 1: like I said, in the Hollywood Land Feed formally bad
- 11:11Speaker 1: Lands Feed right now, and every week we're going to
- 11:14Speaker 1: drop another episode from the archive. Episodes on David Lynch,
- 11:18Speaker 1: Bruce Lee, John Waters, John Belushi, Lindsay Lohan, Robert Downey Junior,
- 11:23Speaker 1: so many others, all of them, they're all going to
- 11:25Speaker 1: release in the hollywood Land Feed until eventually nearly all
- 11:28Speaker 1: of the one hundred previously titled Badlands episodes will be
- 11:31Speaker 1: available as hollywood Land. You're going to get another episode
- 11:34Speaker 1: every week. Right now, there's a ton of them available
- 11:36Speaker 1: for you. There's like forty or so available for you
- 11:38Speaker 1: to binge, and every week for the rest of the year,
- 11:41Speaker 1: you're going to get another episode in the feed, until
- 11:44Speaker 1: eventually we begin releasing new episodes of hollywood Land, but
- 11:49Speaker 1: with a slight modification. More on that in the future,
- 11:52Speaker 1: but for now, all you get to know is at
- 11:54Speaker 1: beginning this week, right now, you can listen to a
- 11:56Speaker 1: whole bunch of archive episodes of bad Lands, now titled
- 11:59Speaker 1: hollywood Land. And then in two weeks time, after you've
- 12:01Speaker 1: had some time to binge those hollywood Land episodes, we
- 12:03Speaker 1: will begin dropping other hollywood Land episodes in the feed
- 12:06Speaker 1: once a week for you to listen to them and
- 12:07Speaker 1: be talking about them here in the after party, and
- 12:10Speaker 1: to do a little hollywood Land segment for you. I'm
- 12:12Speaker 1: looking at this whole thing as like a video archive
- 12:14Speaker 1: of sorts, you know, like a nineteen eighties sort of
- 12:17Speaker 1: like cable Access TV show where some dude has a
- 12:21Speaker 1: bunch of vhs is stacked up in his basement and
- 12:24Speaker 1: he goes in there and he pulls out one story
- 12:26Speaker 1: per week and he talks to his community about them,
- 12:29Speaker 1: and he teas up that story. That's how I'm going
- 12:32Speaker 1: to be approaching this in these hollywood Land episodes here
- 12:35Speaker 1: in the after Party, I'll be highlighting one per week,
- 12:38Speaker 1: and we can talk about him if you want, here,
- 12:40Speaker 1: on social media or wherever, and they'll be there for
- 12:43Speaker 1: you as we unleash this entire archive for you, make
- 12:47Speaker 1: it all available, and then get into producing new episodes
- 12:50Speaker 1: of hollywood Land, and then eventually our sports episodes that
- 12:53Speaker 1: were previously produced and released into the bad Lands Moniker
- 12:55Speaker 1: will eventually be released in their own Sportsland feed, and
- 12:58Speaker 1: in a couple of weeks, our Icon series we've been
- 13:00Speaker 1: doing for the last year, as I mentioned before, will
- 13:03Speaker 1: end in the disgrace Sland feed, and Disgraceland will once
- 13:06Speaker 1: again be solely music subjects. So to hear me tell
- 13:09Speaker 1: stories about music and true crime, follow Disgraceland. If you're
- 13:12Speaker 1: not already get in here. Follow Disgraceland to hear me
- 13:14Speaker 1: tell stories about Hollywood and true crime. Follow hollywood Land,
- 13:18Speaker 1: and to hear me tell stories about sports and true crime.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Keep an eye out for Sportsland, but right now and
- 13:24Speaker 1: I mean, right now, pick up your phone and go
- 13:26Speaker 1: into whatever podcast player you're currently listening to this episode
- 13:29Speaker 1: and search hollywood Land, and then hit that follow or
- 13:32Speaker 1: subscribe button, turn on all auto downloads if you're an
- 13:35Speaker 1: Apple podcast listener. And now, if you're done listening to
- 13:38Speaker 1: this after party, you'll have forty or so Hollywood Land
- 13:40Speaker 1: episodes to binge and you'll be primed for the David
- 13:43Speaker 1: Lynch one coming your way, along with others every week
- 13:45Speaker 1: beginning March thirty first, and every Monday after that. All right,
- 13:51Speaker 1: announcement complete, back to Disgraceland. Here in Disgraceland, we've got
- 13:56Speaker 1: a Rewind episode coming out right after this on Sam Cook,
- 13:58Speaker 1: and next week we have an Alison Chain's episode before you. Okay,
- 14:02Speaker 1: when you're listening to the Alice in Chains episode, I
- 14:04Speaker 1: want you, guys to be thinking about your record collection
- 14:07Speaker 1: and which Seattle artists, which grunge artists do you find
- 14:11Speaker 1: yourself listening to the most. Now. I know, we all
- 14:15Speaker 1: love Alison Chains, we all love Nirvana, we all love
- 14:19Speaker 1: Pearl Jam. I'll say it, I love Pearl Jam. I
- 14:21Speaker 1: don't know why I have a hard time admitting that.
- 14:23Speaker 1: I don't know, maybe because my wife hates him and
- 14:25Speaker 1: she gives me so much shit. I love Soundgarden, Melvin's
- 14:30Speaker 1: Mud Honey, so many great Seattle bands, anyhow, of those
- 14:35Speaker 1: great Seattle artists songwriters. Now, think of your record collection,
- 14:39Speaker 1: which one do you go to the most? Are you
- 14:41Speaker 1: more of a Pearl Jam person? Are you more of
- 14:43Speaker 1: a Soundgarden person? Are you more of an Alison Chains person? Nirvana?
- 14:47Speaker 1: Who who are you still listening to? I, for one,
- 14:49Speaker 1: probably think Nirvana is the most important Seattle band to
- 14:56Speaker 1: come out of that area, out of the grunge Ara.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Kurt Cobain was obviously an incredible songwriter for some reason. However,
- 15:07Speaker 1: even though I give them more importance historically than any
- 15:11Speaker 1: of these other artists, and they're sort of bigger in
- 15:13Speaker 1: my head, Nirvana is and Kurt is as a songwriter,
- 15:17Speaker 1: I don't listen to them nearly as much as I
- 15:21Speaker 1: as I listened to Soundgarden. For me, of all these artists,
- 15:25Speaker 1: it's Soundgarden that I listened to the most. And just
- 15:28Speaker 1: by the way, side note, I saw a little clip
- 15:30Speaker 1: of the Melvins on X the other night playing a
- 15:34Speaker 1: Black Sabbath song from nineteen ninety four, and it just
- 15:36Speaker 1: reminded me of how fucking incredible that band is. Anyhow,
- 15:40Speaker 1: I want to know which Seattle band that's gonna be
- 15:42Speaker 1: the question of the week next next week, Which Seattle
- 15:45Speaker 1: band do you go back to and listen to the most?
- 15:47Speaker 1: Still to now to right now? Okay, we had a
- 15:49Speaker 1: great caller a couple of weeks ago talking about she's
- 15:51Speaker 1: from Seattle, talking about how the Seattle artists didn't speak
- 15:55Speaker 1: to her at all. She was listening to you too
- 15:58Speaker 1: back in the day. I thought that was fansastic. But
- 16:00Speaker 1: the question of the week, when you get that Alison
- 16:02Speaker 1: Chains episode coming your way, is going to be which
- 16:04Speaker 1: Seattle artist do you find yourself still listening to the
- 16:07Speaker 1: most of all of them? Who is it?
- 16:09Speaker 2: All Right, I'll take a quick break back in a flash.
- 16:30Speaker 1: All right, we are back, And just a quick reminder
- 16:32Speaker 1: to make sure you Apple podcast listeners have auto downloads
- 16:35Speaker 1: turned on so you're not missing any episodes. All right,
- 16:37Speaker 1: six one seven nine oh six six six three eight
- 16:40Speaker 1: to leave me a voicemail or send me a text
- 16:42Speaker 1: or DM me at Disgrace Slam Pod. Last week, the
- 16:46Speaker 1: question of the Week was in anticipation of the George
- 16:50Speaker 1: Michael episode that we were releasing. We asked which of
- 16:52Speaker 1: those eighties MTV icons resonated with you the most, Which
- 16:57Speaker 1: did you like the most? Which hate you the most?
- 16:59Speaker 1: Is a cad And let's listen to this voicemail from
- 17:03Speaker 1: Johnny in the six one seven.
- 17:05Speaker 3: Hey, what's up Jake? Johnny Vinyl here responding to my
- 17:09Speaker 3: favorite video stars of the early eighties MTV era easily
- 17:15Speaker 3: Duran Duran their first album, they had those like, you know, weird, dark,
- 17:20Speaker 3: gloomy videos, except for Girls on Film, which was very sexual,
- 17:26Speaker 3: so sexual in fact, that it actually got banned from
- 17:28Speaker 3: MTV and replaced by another video, another version that was
- 17:33Speaker 3: much lighter. And then of course them having the three
- 17:36Speaker 3: big hits off of the Rio album, which is Rio,
- 17:39Speaker 3: Saved Like a Prayer and Hungry Like the Wolf, all
- 17:42Speaker 3: filmed in Sri Lanka on the really really hot you
- 17:46Speaker 3: know the hot the hot surface of the sand and
- 17:50Speaker 3: all the guys were you know, getting close to and
- 17:53Speaker 3: heat stroke and whatnot, made those incredible videos. And then
- 17:56Speaker 3: of course the next album seven and the Ragged Tiger
- 17:59Speaker 3: Verry James Bond Vibe videos. They were very good at
- 18:02Speaker 3: being the matic with their videos depending upon which album.
- 18:07Speaker 3: But yes, definitely Duran Duran in the early eighties, and
- 18:10Speaker 3: that's my cake. Take it easy, buddy, Johnny.
- 18:12Speaker 1: It's funny you mentioned Duran Duran for two reasons. One,
- 18:15Speaker 1: I was watching White Lotus last night and I noticed
- 18:17Speaker 1: that there's an actress on White Lotus named Charlene Lebon,
- 18:23Speaker 1: and I said to myself, I wonder if that's Simon
- 18:25Speaker 1: Lebon's daughter. How many labonds are there. I've never heard
- 18:28Speaker 1: of a Lebon besides Simon Lebon, and I completely forgot
- 18:32Speaker 1: about it until get into recording this episode this morning,
- 18:36Speaker 1: which I'm recording early because I'm traveling to New York
- 18:38Speaker 1: this week. But anyhow, Duran Duran, what I gotta say.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Probably yeah for me, definitely one of the first I
- 18:47Speaker 1: actually bought Rio on vinylists a little kid. I was
- 18:51Speaker 1: so into those videos. They freaked me out. Something about
- 18:53Speaker 1: the animalism of it, all the rock and roll animal thing.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Maybe that's it. But yeah, I hear you Duran Duran.
- 18:59Speaker 1: And now that I'm older, I have you know. I
- 19:02Speaker 1: was into them as a kid, like a real little kid,
- 19:04Speaker 1: and then just completely never gave them any thought as
- 19:06Speaker 1: an adolescent or young adult. But when I hear durand
- 19:10Speaker 1: Urand song. Now, man, I bumped that shit. I love it.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Those classic eighties Duranda Urand songs are fantastic. And I
- 19:15Speaker 1: think there's actually a great durand Drand's Graycend episode somewhere
- 19:19Speaker 1: somewhere to be told at some point. So Johnny, appreciate you.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Let's check in with Heidi in the eight three eight Hei. Kay, Yes, Heidi, Philadelphia.
- 19:29Speaker 3: I'm just listening to your bonus episodes and you mentioned
- 19:33Speaker 3: about the eighty favorite. I have to say to day
- 19:37Speaker 3: Off for she is still one of my all time favorites.
- 19:41Speaker 3: She was to be fantastic Ben and.
- 19:45Speaker 4: She's fantastic now. She even doesn't do it with Henry Rollins.
- 19:49Speaker 3: It's beautiful.
- 19:51Speaker 1: So yeah, just ones of that message and have a
- 19:56Speaker 1: great day Barcarola. Okay, Cindy Lauper and Henry Rollins, thank
- 20:00Speaker 1: you for reminding me of that. Also, Cindy Lapper, of course,
- 20:03Speaker 1: I mean you just mentioned eighties MTV and she's probably
- 20:06Speaker 1: the first one that springs to mind. Cindy Lapper of
- 20:10Speaker 1: course known as the mainstream pop video artist that she was.
- 20:16Speaker 1: But you know, she came from New York. She came
- 20:19Speaker 1: sort of from that punk scene, that avant garde scene
- 20:22Speaker 1: in New York in the early eighties, late seventies, early eighties.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Her covering res above by Black Flag with Henry Rollins
- 20:29Speaker 1: is surprising on the surface, but not if you know
- 20:33Speaker 1: the history of Cindy Lapper. We get into Cindy Lapper
- 20:36Speaker 1: a little bit in our Cramps episode. You guys shoul
- 20:38Speaker 1: check that out if you haven't. I just want to say,
- 20:39Speaker 1: I've been seeing these Henry Rollinds clips, interview clips from
- 20:43Speaker 1: the nineties pop up in my feeds, and there's one
- 20:47Speaker 1: I think I might have mentioned this before. There's one
- 20:49Speaker 1: with Kennedy from the nineties, and the sexual tension between
- 20:52Speaker 1: Henry Rollins and Kennedy is you can see it, you
- 20:57Speaker 1: can feel it. It is so prevalent. There's no way
- 21:02Speaker 1: they didn't have sex. After watching this interview, you're just like, Wow,
- 21:06Speaker 1: they fucked. It's incredible. I just sort of like filed
- 21:11Speaker 1: that away as Wow, that was interesting. You'd probably never
- 21:13Speaker 1: see that nowadays. Then the other day another interview came up.
- 21:17Speaker 1: I'm not sure if it was MTV. It looked like
- 21:18Speaker 1: an MTV set. It was definitely from the nineties. It's
- 21:21Speaker 1: Henry Rollins talking largely about Green Day and their massive
- 21:25Speaker 1: success at the time. It's right around the time of
- 21:28Speaker 1: their first album. When was that ninety four ninety three
- 21:31Speaker 1: something like that, their first major label album, and that's
- 21:34Speaker 1: what the interview's about. I don't recognize the interviewers, but
- 21:37Speaker 1: that doesn't mean it's not MTV. It could be like
- 21:41Speaker 1: Much Music or something. I'm not sure. Anyhow, they talk
- 21:44Speaker 1: about the artist they talk about like young pop's starlets,
- 21:49Speaker 1: and they talk about Brandy and someone mentions that she's
- 21:53Speaker 1: too young, and Henry Rollins almost says, she's not too
- 21:58Speaker 1: young for me. It's really really like on the edge. Really,
- 22:03Speaker 1: it's really something. And if you know Rollins, he's he's
- 22:07Speaker 1: super charismatic in these interviews, and he's you can tell
- 22:12Speaker 1: he's relishing, and just how the interview's going and the
- 22:15Speaker 1: hold he has on the folks who are interviewing him,
- 22:19Speaker 1: and almost that feeling of like he can say anything,
- 22:22Speaker 1: you know, Like it's just the chemistry between the interviewer
- 22:25Speaker 1: and the interview is so is so there. It's like
- 22:27Speaker 1: just boom boom boom snappin'. Uh No, I don't mean
- 22:32Speaker 1: to insinuate that Rollins was suggesting that he likes sex
- 22:37Speaker 1: with underage girls or anything like that. I think his
- 22:42Speaker 1: his his wit perhaps and his quickness verbal quickness was
- 22:46Speaker 1: getting ahead of his brain. My point, however, is that
- 22:50Speaker 1: that would never happen today. It would never fly today,
- 22:53Speaker 1: of course, and for good reason. But it was just
- 22:55Speaker 1: interesting to see how dated the nineties now are becoming.
- 23:01Speaker 1: It was really, it was really anterous. He checked that
- 23:02Speaker 1: interview out if you can, or just I don't know,
- 23:04Speaker 1: google Rollins and comments on green Bay. Maybe that interview
- 23:08Speaker 1: will come up. I love Rollins. By the way, I'm
- 23:10Speaker 1: not judging Rollins. I'm just saying I'm judging the time
- 23:12Speaker 1: more than anything else. Anyhow, I didn't mean to go
- 23:15Speaker 1: down that Henry Rollins tangent there. Thanks Heidi, appreciate you.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Play the four to one oer Matt. Let's listen to
- 23:20Speaker 1: this this one on YouTube.
- 23:22Speaker 4: Hey Jacobs Craig from Baltimore. My favorite Irish band has
- 23:26Speaker 4: to be you two is my first formal concert experience.
- 23:29Speaker 4: August sixteenth, nineteen ninety one, sixteen year old kid in
- 23:33Speaker 4: the middle of the field at RFK Stadium. Imagine getting
- 23:36Speaker 4: to see YouTube the hepe Probably their popularity touring the
- 23:40Speaker 4: Zoo TV tour after their Auto Davy album, which was
- 23:45Speaker 4: kind of their experimental album, but it really grew on me,
- 23:48Speaker 4: and I was a sixteen year old kid in the
- 23:50Speaker 4: crowd of fifty thousand people on the field at RFK Stadium,
- 23:54Speaker 4: so it couldn't start off with a better show than that.
- 23:58Speaker 4: Ben Lizzy has grown on me though, because my favorite
- 24:00Speaker 4: current band, the whole SETI plays them as their walkout
- 24:03Speaker 4: song boys are back in town or deal breaks for
- 24:06Speaker 4: their massive nights Brooklyn residencies they do every year. So
- 24:10Speaker 4: great show, love it.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Thanks a lot for on Oh, thanks for the message,
- 24:14Speaker 1: thanks to the voicemail, Craig. Of course we're playing this
- 24:17Speaker 1: one to you guys because we just like I think
- 24:19Speaker 1: I mentioned earlier in this episode, we had a rewind
- 24:21Speaker 1: episode recently on you two. If you haven't heard it,
- 24:23Speaker 1: go check that out. Craig, Seeing you too in ninety one,
- 24:28Speaker 1: my god, that's that's huge. There's a lot of great
- 24:31Speaker 1: eras to see you two in. You know you could
- 24:33Speaker 1: earlier they did that club run in the beginning, we
- 24:36Speaker 1: were all too young for that, but seeing them in
- 24:39Speaker 1: ninety one would be that's prime era, Like you said,
- 24:43Speaker 1: was Zoo Zoo Tour, which I didn't love. I didn't
- 24:46Speaker 1: love that sort of imagery and all that. Oktung baby,
- 24:50Speaker 1: of course I love it all more now. That seems
- 24:52Speaker 1: to be a familiar theme. I think I'm mentioning that
- 24:54Speaker 1: almost every every episode now of how I like things
- 24:56Speaker 1: I used to dislike. But yeah, at our stadium as well,
- 25:01Speaker 1: amazing And I love the whole steady Thin Lizzie connection
- 25:04Speaker 1: as well. Very cool. All right, guys, you want to
- 25:06Speaker 1: leave me a voicemail, you want to send me a
- 25:07Speaker 1: text on anything? Question of the week next week is
- 25:09Speaker 1: going to be on your favorite Seattle grunge songwriters slash
- 25:13Speaker 1: artists six one seven nine oh six six six three eight.
- 25:16Speaker 1: That's how you text me as well. Let's do some
- 25:18Speaker 1: text right now. This one comes from the six to
- 25:20Speaker 1: one four. Hey Jake, Sammy from the six to one four,
- 25:23Speaker 1: huge fan of the podcast, have been listening for years.
- 25:25Speaker 1: In light of the holiday weekend, he's referencing Saint Patrick's Day.
- 25:29Speaker 1: One of my favorite bands from Ireland is Gaelic Storm
- 25:32Speaker 1: from Galway. They're a fun combination of traditional fiddle, pub
- 25:35Speaker 1: tunes and modern s pop and they come every year
- 25:37Speaker 1: to our Irish Restval in August. Fortunately, unfortunately, they are
- 25:40Speaker 1: getting so popular it's hard to get close to the
- 25:42Speaker 1: tent to see them, so I try to catch their
- 25:44Speaker 1: shows at the Newport whenever they are in town. Again.
- 25:46Speaker 1: Love the show and can't wait to hear what stories
- 25:49Speaker 1: you have in store for the loyal fans. Thanks for everything.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Rock a rolla that's from the six one four. All right,
- 25:54Speaker 1: I gotta check out Gaelic Storm. I love that. I
- 25:56Speaker 1: love when I get a recommendation I have no idea about.
- 25:59Speaker 1: And that's I've never heard of Gaelic Storm. I'm stoked
- 26:03Speaker 1: to hear it. Three h four rights in Hey, requesting
- 26:05Speaker 1: a Hazel Atkins episode. Crazy Stories. There you are requesting
- 26:08Speaker 1: three oh four, and you shall receive. We will do
- 26:10Speaker 1: a Hazel Akins episode at some point, I promise you.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Two five three rights in old Mandz from Washington State.
- 26:16Speaker 1: My favorite Irish band, House of Pain Jump around baby. Yes,
- 26:21Speaker 1: I realize they are in a rock band, but an
- 26:22Speaker 1: influential group. Nonetheless, they are not a rock band. They
- 26:25Speaker 1: are influential and they are Irish, though they're not from Ireland.
- 26:30Speaker 1: I don't believe unce I'm missing something and I don't
- 26:32Speaker 1: know much about how Sapain saw him on that first
- 26:34Speaker 1: tour though, with rage against the machine opening up? How
- 26:37Speaker 1: about that at the ICA in Boston, tiny little place.
- 26:42Speaker 1: That's awesome five seven three Rights in some kind words,
- 26:45Speaker 1: thank you five seven three. I'm blushing, so I'm not
- 26:47Speaker 1: going to read your text, but I appreciate it. Six
- 26:50Speaker 1: one seven nine oh six six six three eight. If
- 26:51Speaker 1: you want to leave me a voicemail, you can DM
- 26:53Speaker 1: me as well at Disgrace Slam Pod on x on Instagram,
- 26:57Speaker 1: on Facebook. Miranda g Gillian Rights in Pussy Riot, you
- 27:00Speaker 1: need to do an episode on Pussy Riot. They dared
- 27:03Speaker 1: to stand up to Putin and they lost it. They
- 27:05Speaker 1: have stories to tell about prisons, rebellion and female advocacy
- 27:08Speaker 1: in the spirit of rock and roll rebellion. They definitely
- 27:11Speaker 1: checked that metaphorical box. Just the thought. Love the podcast, Miranda,
- 27:15Speaker 1: Love your suggestion. We'll do an episode on Pussy Riot
- 27:19Speaker 1: at some point. Linda Nolan writes in a little note
- 27:22Speaker 1: that I should be reading the Rick Rubin book and
- 27:24Speaker 1: that he narrates it on Spotify. And I haven't read
- 27:26Speaker 1: this book yet and I need to. I think I
- 27:29Speaker 1: own it. I think someone gave it to me. I
- 27:31Speaker 1: think it's in a box of books that I haven't
- 27:32Speaker 1: unpacked yet. And I'm also fascinated by Rick Rubin, sort
- 27:37Speaker 1: of every time a quote of his flashes across the feed,
- 27:41Speaker 1: I'm interested in what that guy's got to say. So
- 27:44Speaker 1: thank you Linda for reminding me. Then over on Facebook,
- 27:47Speaker 1: and I apologize in advance if I mess up the
- 27:51Speaker 1: pronunciation of this last name, Anthony the petron Pittrntonio de Petrontonio,
- 27:58Speaker 1: the Pietrontonio. I don't know Anthony, I'm sorry. But Anthony
- 28:02Speaker 1: writes and Irish bluesman rocker unsung seventies guitar god Rory
- 28:07Speaker 1: Gallagher from Anthony Dean Cambridge. You know, I gotta admit
- 28:10Speaker 1: I got a blind spot. I got blind years when
- 28:13Speaker 1: it comes to Rory Gallagher, and I gotta get into it.
- 28:15Speaker 1: Where do I start? Anthony? Hit me back, give me
- 28:18Speaker 1: a good recommendation, a place to start with Rory Gallagher? Okay?
- 28:21Speaker 1: I want to know Derek sterk Derek Sturkey on Facebook.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Rights Hey, Jake caught the comments about Peter Frampton playing
- 28:27Speaker 1: for David Bowie. I didn't realize that it was not
- 28:29Speaker 1: general knowledge. I saw the La stop on Glass Spider's
- 28:32Speaker 1: tour was thrilled to see Frampton alongside Bowie. Here's one
- 28:36Speaker 1: light article on the tour. Thanks Derek, appreciate that we
- 28:40Speaker 1: were talking about that a couple episodes back. You guys
- 28:42Speaker 1: don't miss anything I like that about you, among many
- 28:45Speaker 1: other things. This is something that caught my eye on
- 28:48Speaker 1: X from hair Metal Messiah. Has nothing to do with
- 28:51Speaker 1: Disgrace and other than the fact that we talked about this,
- 28:52Speaker 1: that we did an episode on this artist, and I
- 28:55Speaker 1: just want to read this. It's from last week and
- 28:58Speaker 1: it says it's about ACDC and it sums up ACDC
- 29:02Speaker 1: in a way that I wish I had summed this
- 29:04Speaker 1: up in my episode. Again, this is from hair Metal Messiah.
- 29:08Speaker 1: Acdc's Highway to Hell isn't just an album, It's a
- 29:11Speaker 1: goddamn prophecy. In nineteen seventy nine, while the rest of
- 29:15Speaker 1: the world was fumbling around with disco and soft rock,
- 29:19Speaker 1: these maniacs were writing the blueprint for every hard rock
- 29:23Speaker 1: and metal band today. Bond Scott sounds like he gargled glass,
- 29:27Speaker 1: lit a cigarette and chased it with a warm six pack,
- 29:30Speaker 1: while Angus Young shreds beating around the bush and walk
- 29:33Speaker 1: all over you like a possessed madman, cranking out rifts
- 29:36Speaker 1: hotter than Hell itself. Every song is a fist to
- 29:40Speaker 1: the face, a boot to the teeth, and a middle
- 29:44Speaker 1: finger to convention. This record was decades ahead of its time,
- 29:48Speaker 1: and if you don't feel it, go buy a Beg's album,
- 29:51Speaker 1: light a lavender candle, and cry yourself to sleep. You know.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Aside from all the sort of like tough guy boasting
- 29:57Speaker 1: in that tweet, the thing that I like about it
- 30:00Speaker 1: is that it talks about Highway to Hell in its
- 30:03Speaker 1: place and time, and it's true it was ahead of
- 30:07Speaker 1: its time, and I don't think of it that way
- 30:09Speaker 1: because Highway to Hell have become it's so huge. It's
- 30:11Speaker 1: such a huge classic rock song now. And I also
- 30:14Speaker 1: don't think of that album as the great banger that
- 30:16Speaker 1: it is, where they're like, like the person who tweeted
- 30:19Speaker 1: that says, there's not a bad song on it. Every
- 30:21Speaker 1: song on that album just crushes it, And uh yeah,
- 30:27Speaker 1: I just I saw that. I thought it was interesting.
- 30:29Speaker 1: I wanted to read it to you guys, And again,
- 30:30Speaker 1: we got that ACDC episode in our archive. If you
- 30:33Speaker 1: are interested, all right, I'm gonna take a quick break.
- 30:35Speaker 1: I'll be back in a flash. You guys, you can
- 30:37Speaker 1: hit me up. You can text me, you can you
- 30:39Speaker 1: can send me a voicemail six one seven nine o
- 30:41Speaker 1: six six six three eight. You can direct message me
- 30:44Speaker 1: at the s Grace lampod on Instagram X or Facebook.
- 30:47Speaker 5: Back in the flash.
- 31:02Speaker 1: All right, we are back at disgracelam pod on the
- 31:06Speaker 1: DM six one seven nine six sixty six three eight,
- 31:09Speaker 1: voicemail and text. Reminding you, guys, search out Hollywood Land
- 31:15Speaker 1: in your podcast player, follow that podcast and start binging
- 31:19Speaker 1: our Hollywood Land podcast hosted by me, produced by Double Elvis.
- 31:24Speaker 1: We're getting our whole archive out there for you. You can
- 31:26Speaker 1: email me Disgrace Sandpod at gmail dot com let me
- 31:29Speaker 1: know what you think of those episodes, or you can
- 31:30Speaker 1: email me to talk about whatever else you want to
- 31:32Speaker 1: talk about. This Rory Gallagher thing is really really picked up.
- 31:35Speaker 1: Got a lot of emails on it, got a lot
- 31:36Speaker 1: of dms. Greg Plas writes in Hey Jake, Fantastic Show.
- 31:39Speaker 1: Greg Plass also answers the question I asked in the
- 31:41Speaker 1: last block. My number one Irish musician is Rory Gallagher.
- 31:45Speaker 1: Possibly my favorite guitar player of all time depending on
- 31:48Speaker 1: what mood I'm in that day. Irish Tour seventy four, Well,
- 31:51Speaker 1: I'm Irish in seventy four was a damn good year.
- 31:54Speaker 1: If You're me is an absolute classic. Keep up the
- 31:56Speaker 1: great work, my friend, Greg, Greg. I appreciate it. Greg.
- 32:00Speaker 1: I'm gonna I'm gonna bump that today when I'm working out.
- 32:02Speaker 1: I'm gonna go for Irish Tourist seventy four. Rory Gallagher
- 32:05Speaker 1: Disgray sampod at gmail dot com. You guys want to
- 32:07Speaker 1: get in touch about anything else, Knox Bronson writes in Hey,
- 32:11Speaker 1: love your episode on Zeppelin, especially the part about David Bowie.
- 32:14Speaker 1: I didn't realize that White Stains was an Alistair Crowley book,
- 32:18Speaker 1: as name checked in Station to Station. In a nineteen
- 32:21Speaker 1: seventy five interview, Bowie said something to the effect of
- 32:23Speaker 1: I'm not evil. Alice Cooper isn't evil, lou isn't evil,
- 32:28Speaker 1: but there are evil bands. Just look at led Zeppelin.
- 32:32Speaker 1: This is a fascinating topic to me. Thank you, Knox Bronson.
- 32:36Speaker 1: David Bowie's fear of Jimmy Page and the power of
- 32:41Speaker 1: the dark evil power that he felt that Led Zeppelin possessed.
- 32:46Speaker 1: That story never gets old to me, and not a
- 32:49Speaker 1: lot has been has been has been said about it.
- 32:52Speaker 1: Not enough, I should say, has been said about it.
- 32:54Speaker 1: I certainly said my piece, but I wasn't there. I
- 32:57Speaker 1: can only say what others have said, and I can
- 32:59Speaker 1: only contextualize it in the larger story as I see
- 33:01Speaker 1: it now. I did not see any of this evil
- 33:06Speaker 1: evident in the recent led Zeppelin documentary, which I loved,
- 33:10Speaker 1: but which you know, I think I mentioned here. I
- 33:12Speaker 1: did have my I did have issues with it. I
- 33:15Speaker 1: wanted it to be so much more, and this was
- 33:18Speaker 1: not represented in any way. And I don't mean I
- 33:22Speaker 1: get why Jimmy Page doesn't want people talking about him
- 33:25Speaker 1: and Alistair Crowley living in his house and the black
- 33:27Speaker 1: Dog and all that stuff. We're doing cocaine and scaring
- 33:30Speaker 1: the shit out of Jimmy Page, but you know, we're
- 33:34Speaker 1: completely missing the point of led Zeppelin if we gloss
- 33:37Speaker 1: past the part of their history that is that darkness
- 33:41Speaker 1: and what it represented, and how somebody like David Bowie
- 33:45Speaker 1: was legitimately scared of Jimmy Page. Fascinating stuff. Thank you
- 33:49Speaker 1: Dox Bonsor for reminding me that disgrace sampod at gmail
- 33:53Speaker 1: dot com. This one comes from Shane Schmidt, subject we
- 33:58Speaker 1: need the Anti Flag story message. I'm a longtime listener
- 34:03Speaker 1: and a huge fan of the show, and up until now,
- 34:04Speaker 1: I never really had a reason to write in. Much
- 34:06Speaker 1: like Jake, I'm an old punk from the nineties with
- 34:09Speaker 1: a true love for all forms of music, and I'm
- 34:10Speaker 1: fascinated by its history, as ugly as the stories may
- 34:14Speaker 1: be at times, so imagine the surprise I fell a
- 34:17Speaker 1: few weeks ago when I was reading up on one
- 34:19Speaker 1: of my favorite bands and discover they had broken up
- 34:23Speaker 1: due to the horrible actions of and allegations against Justin
- 34:27Speaker 1: Sane and to a lesser degree, his band, Anti Flag,
- 34:31Speaker 1: a band whose genre is meant to be a safe
- 34:34Speaker 1: haven and who always claimed to stand for equality, human
- 34:37Speaker 1: rights and claim to be feminists, forced to disband and
- 34:40Speaker 1: see their front man flee the country due to allegations
- 34:44Speaker 1: of sexual assault, grooming, and statutory rape. Now that's a
- 34:48Speaker 1: true disgrace and we need this story to be told. Anyways,
- 34:52Speaker 1: Please keep up the great work and forgive my rambling.
- 34:54Speaker 1: I do that when I'm nervous. Thank you, Shane Schmidt. Shane,
- 34:57Speaker 1: you know this story cross my view, and I thought
- 35:01Speaker 1: about it, and I'm still thinking about it, and I
- 35:03Speaker 1: looked into it a dt bit. I'll look into it more,
- 35:06Speaker 1: but my first inclination is that the story hasn't yet resolved.
- 35:11Speaker 1: There's still more to come out. It's tough for me
- 35:14Speaker 1: to get into the middle of an ongoing story as
- 35:16Speaker 1: I'm experiencing now with this whole Diddy thing, which has
- 35:19Speaker 1: turned out to be a huge pain in my ass.
- 35:22Speaker 1: If I'm being perfectly honest with you and trying to
- 35:24Speaker 1: keep up with everything, that's all the truth, all the conjecture,
- 35:29Speaker 1: the transgressions that are real, the transgressions that are fiction.
- 35:32Speaker 1: I can't wait for this ditty trial to actually start,
