- 0:01Speaker 1: Thank you. Welcome to the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show,
- 0:44Speaker 1: the longest running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Over 13 and a half years strong. Got a great
- 0:50Speaker 1: show this week, as we do every week. I'm Jeff
- 0:53Speaker 1: Warren here at my buddy Len Hunsicker.
- 0:55Speaker 2: How you doing, pal?
- 0:57Speaker 3: I'm doing well. Hopefully, everybody's having a good week out there.
- 1:00Speaker 3: How you doing, Jeff?
- 1:01Speaker 2: I'm doing great. Things are great. Life is great.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Like, last week, Eric and I, I think we had
- 1:10Speaker 1: about an hour discussion. It's what we call our hour
- 1:14Speaker 1: therapy discussions. Len, you and I, it's basically about 35
- 1:18Speaker 1: minutes of discussions prior.
- 1:22Speaker 2: This is what I need right now during my life.
- 1:24Speaker 2: This is what I need. I need this podcast.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I need this podcast.
- 1:26Speaker 2: I need this connectivity here. This is what I need.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:32Speaker 2: I got 20 days, man.
- 1:33Speaker 1: 20 days of us recording this until election day.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Sweet Jesus. And then if you're successful, then you get
- 1:40Speaker 3: to do it all over again, however many years from now.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Oh, two years from now, right?
- 1:44Speaker 3: Oh, good.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Two years. Yes. Yes.
- 1:48Speaker 3: That sounds fun. Ah, yes.
- 1:50Speaker 4: I kid.
- 1:51Speaker 1: I joke folks, honestly, honor of a lifetime.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Really?
- 1:54Speaker 2: It is. It really is.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Yes. Yeah. The position absolutely is. Um, and all that stuff.
- 2:00Speaker 3: It's just the whole campaigning thing just is, seems wild
- 2:04Speaker 3: to me.
- 2:05Speaker 2: It is.
- 2:05Speaker 5: It is.
- 2:06Speaker 1: And being on the front lines of this type of
- 2:07Speaker 1: race and it being such a high, higher profile race
- 2:11Speaker 1: here in Pennsylvania, like on the state level, it just, it's,
- 2:15Speaker 1: it's intense. I'll say that right now. It's, it's, it's intense.
- 2:18Speaker 1: The negative stuff stinks. I'm going to tell you that
- 2:21Speaker 1: right now. Negative stuff stinks.
- 2:24Speaker 3: You are in a very negative field. As I say
- 2:30Speaker 3: to you all the time, I don't know how you
- 2:33Speaker 3: do that or why.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Or why.
- 2:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:38Speaker 2: You take the good with the bad at the end
- 2:39Speaker 2: of the day.
- 2:40Speaker 3: I suppose.
- 2:41Speaker 2: It's more good, you know?
- 2:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I suppose. It's the chance to be able to
- 2:45Speaker 3: do good.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Absolutely. Absolutely. End of the day.
- 2:48Speaker 1: So you're doing pretty good, though, right? Everything's going good
- 2:51Speaker 1: for you?
- 2:53Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, yeah, nothing crazy going on. I'm just
- 2:57Speaker 3: kind of same stuff every week, which isn't necessarily a
- 3:00Speaker 3: bad thing.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 3:02Speaker 3: I don't have a lot of stress in my life
- 3:04Speaker 3: right now, so.
- 3:05Speaker 4: You know.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I'm glad to hear that.
- 3:08Speaker 1: We may have stress in our life after this weekend
- 3:10Speaker 1: because Eric is hosting his annual fantasy basketball.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Yes.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Fantasy basketball league that we are in. And I, I just,
- 3:21Speaker 1: I'm not going to pick and bead for the second
- 3:23Speaker 1: year in a row. I'm not going to do it.
- 3:24Speaker 2: I'm not going to do it. Probably. I don't, I don't.
- 3:29Speaker 3: I don't know if you should take him before round six.
- 3:31Speaker 3: And I mean, not you personally. I mean, anybody, anybody. Exactly.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:35Speaker 1: So I love how Eric said on the text or
- 3:37Speaker 1: he's like, I'm taking all sixers this year.
- 3:39Speaker 2: That's what I'm doing.
- 3:41Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Because that's the thing, like with, with, you know, as
- 3:46Speaker 3: talented as a team as that is, I I'm scared
- 3:49Speaker 3: to take anybody on that team because like, you don't
- 3:52Speaker 3: know how they're going to play. You don't know who's
- 3:54Speaker 3: going to get the majority of the shots and all
- 3:55Speaker 3: that stuff. And it's like, Until you watch them for
- 3:58Speaker 3: a month, you kind of don't really know what to
- 4:01Speaker 3: expect in terms of who's the alpha, who's sacrificing, all
- 4:06Speaker 3: that stuff. So it's just, yeah, the concept of taking them,
- 4:11Speaker 3: anybody on that team, is a little bit of a
- 4:13Speaker 3: mystery right now.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Well, next week, folks, just to let you know, we
- 4:16Speaker 1: are going to have our Sixers season preview. Yes, even
- 4:19Speaker 1: though the first game of the season is next Tuesday,
- 4:22Speaker 1: we're still going to be dropping the Sixers season preview tomorrow.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Next Thursday for our main show, we're going to have
- 4:28Speaker 1: our good friend Sean Bernard from DraftKings, Fox Sports, Philly's
- 4:34Speaker 1: The Gambler. He's over at Crossing Broad too. He's going
- 4:36Speaker 1: to be jumping on to dive into.
- 4:38Speaker 2: That with us.
- 4:40Speaker 1: But Len, before we get into our first topic, we
- 4:43Speaker 1: got to mention some Philly's talk right off the bat.
- 4:44Speaker 2: We didn't have it on the agenda. Don Mattingly is
- 4:48Speaker 2: coming back, and.
- 4:49Speaker 1: It took a while for this Phillies front office to
- 4:52Speaker 1: actually get the next manager, and the interim manager from
- 4:55Speaker 1: this year is going to be the manager for the
- 4:57Speaker 1: next two years, Raul Abanez. wanted to stay where he
- 5:01Speaker 1: was at. There was some interest the Phillies had in
- 5:03Speaker 1: bringing him on board. He said, nope, no thanks. Alex Cora,
- 5:06Speaker 1: as we know, nope, no thanks.
- 5:09Speaker 3: For the second time.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Yes, for the second time. Philly is a destination place
- 5:14Speaker 2: for managers.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Lennon doesn't necessarily seem to be the place to go.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I didn't realize that they were looking
- 5:24Speaker 3: at Ibanez. I knew once the second time Cora said no.
- 5:28Speaker 3: I had a feeling it was going to be Mattingly.
- 5:31Speaker 3: And I think a lot of it has to do with,
- 5:33Speaker 3: you know, the uncertainty of next year. You don't know,
- 5:39Speaker 3: is there going to be a next year? If there is,
- 5:41Speaker 3: when does it start?
- 5:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:43Speaker 3: You know, so. Having somebody there that's familiar that you
- 5:48Speaker 3: can kind of hit the ground running with, everybody knows,
- 5:51Speaker 3: everybody knows what he expects out of them, isn't necessarily
- 5:56Speaker 3: the worst thing in the world. I think he did
- 5:58Speaker 3: a good job once he took over for Thompson. Did
- 6:02Speaker 3: he make some mistakes? Yeah, but most managers do. That's
- 6:07Speaker 3: going to happen. I don't– I'm not– I was never a, oh,
- 6:11Speaker 3: got to get rid of Mattingly guy. If they kept him,
- 6:15Speaker 3: they kept him. If they moved on from him, they
- 6:17Speaker 3: moved on from him.
- 6:18Speaker 1: I wasn't a fan just because of how he used
- 6:20Speaker 1: the– I mean, it just is bullpen decisions. I mean,
- 6:23Speaker 1: they were pretty bad. They were pretty bad all season.
- 6:26Speaker 1: And then again, the bullpen was bad too.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Exactly. Yeah. You were given a pack of options– And
- 6:34Speaker 3: most of them are options that you have zero confidence in.
- 6:37Speaker 3: So what do you do? I, you know, yeah, there's
- 6:42Speaker 3: some decisions that, that, you know, could probably be made differently,
- 6:45Speaker 3: but really I have a hard time, you know, blaming
- 6:49Speaker 3: him for, for bullpen decisions when your bullpen is utter garbage. Yeah.
- 6:55Speaker 3: And that's what the, you know, outside of Duran immune
- 6:59Speaker 3: from a blow and a save himself, you know, every
- 7:01Speaker 3: now and again, Um, there really aren't a lot of
- 7:04Speaker 3: reliable options there. So, I mean, it is what it
- 7:08Speaker 3: is there. It's nothing, nothing much you can do about that.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 7:11Speaker 1: We're going to get into more Phillies talk this coming
- 7:13Speaker 1: Monday on the table talk interview show. I'm going to
- 7:15Speaker 1: have destiny Legardo from Phillies nation.com. We're going to kind
- 7:18Speaker 1: of dive into some of this stuff a little bit
- 7:21Speaker 1: more folks. Um, so on this particular show, Len and I,
- 7:24Speaker 1: we want to dive into this Philadelphia flyers team.
- 7:27Speaker 2: They are horrendous. And I don't think any of us
- 7:31Speaker 2: expected this.
- 7:32Speaker 1: We're going to talk about them, but then we're going
- 7:33Speaker 1: to talk about something good, which is the Philadelphia Union.
- 7:36Speaker 1: They're the only team that is giving us any sort
- 7:38Speaker 1: of hope. We're going to give our thoughts on this
- 7:40Speaker 1: incredible run by this team. And I believe they're playing
- 7:43Speaker 1: right now as we are recording this Wednesday night.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Game's over. They have won. They won three to one.
- 7:48Speaker 3: So yeah, another, another win in the bank.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Unbelievable. We're going to talk about this team and just,
- 7:54Speaker 2: I mean, they are the hope.
- 7:55Speaker 1: They are the hope within the Philadelphia area for sure.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Because then we're going to be ending our discussion, not
- 8:02Speaker 1: just with Len, but it's what we're throwing down on
- 8:03Speaker 1: the table this week. Some Eagles talk here. Eagles are
- 8:06Speaker 1: having major issues with, There's so many of them. Len
- 8:09Speaker 1: and I are going to give our thoughts on this
- 8:11Speaker 1: team as they're getting ready to play some important divisional
- 8:14Speaker 1: games after this upcoming Panthers game. And then Lou DiBiase
- 8:17Speaker 1: from the Locked On Eagles podcast is going to join
- 8:19Speaker 1: us for a very in-depth discussion about the birds, offense, defense,
- 8:24Speaker 1: and all these problems that they're having heading into week six. So, Len,
- 8:28Speaker 1: let's start with the Philadelphia Flyers here. Holy freaking crap.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Holy crap. As of us recording this, on Wednesday, October 14th, folks,
- 8:40Speaker 1: the Flyers still have not won a game.
- 8:42Speaker 2: They have still not won a game. And they have played, what,
- 8:45Speaker 2: seven at this point?
- 8:47Speaker 3: Eight. I'm sorry. They lost in overtime to Seattle last night.
- 8:51Speaker 3: So zero wins, five losses in regulation, three losses in overtime.
- 8:55Speaker 3: They have as many wins as we do in the
- 8:57Speaker 3: NHL right now.
- 9:00Speaker 1: I cannot believe Rick Tockett is still... On this payroll.
- 9:05Speaker 1: I can't believe it, Len. I can't believe he's still here.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Didn't they? Oh my gosh.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Who was the coach that they let go after like three,
- 9:12Speaker 1: three loss, three or four losses years ago?
- 9:14Speaker 3: Was it lobby?
- 9:15Speaker 2: There was a lobby. Yeah, that's right. Yeah.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Yeah. You know, cause he had a couple of good
- 9:20Speaker 3: years and then they, they got off to a really
- 9:22Speaker 3: bad start and they were like, okay, let's cut the cord.
- 9:24Speaker 3: At what point do they do that? I, I didn't
- 9:26Speaker 3: know when to put this in there. in terms of
- 9:29Speaker 3: when to mention it, but you said we're going to be,
- 9:31Speaker 3: cause we're going to be talking about the Eagles should,
- 9:34Speaker 3: should draft Kings or somebody open up a thing of
- 9:38Speaker 3: who gets fired first, talk it or Sirianni. I mean, it's,
- 9:42Speaker 3: you know, I mean, both of them have, you can
- 9:45Speaker 3: make arguments for both of them at this point.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely. Look, the worst winless streak to begin a
- 9:50Speaker 2: season is 11 games. Looked it up.
- 9:52Speaker 1: It was held by the New York Rangers in 1943,
- 9:54Speaker 1: 1944 season.
- 9:55Speaker 2: And that streak lasted. nearly a full month.
- 9:57Speaker 1: It actually began on October 30th, 1943.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Running through November 27th, 1943. So I.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Mean, look, this team, the way that they are playing
- 10:13Speaker 1: and yes, they did look a little bit better against
- 10:15Speaker 1: the Kraken, but the way they're playing, they could, they
- 10:19Speaker 1: very well could take that Rangers 1943 streak and, uh,
- 10:25Speaker 1: they can, they could give that streak a run for
- 10:26Speaker 1: their money here. I think, I think it could happen
- 10:28Speaker 1: because this team looks like complete dog shit.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, there have been some games where they're, um,
- 10:35Speaker 3: you know, where, where they, they look somewhat competitive. You know,
- 10:38Speaker 3: there was a game against Ottawa a little while back.
- 10:41Speaker 3: There was this game against Seattle last night and other
- 10:45Speaker 3: games where they are just getting mauled and and not
- 10:48Speaker 3: that they're getting mauled because they're less talented which you
- 10:51Speaker 3: know they are we're against some of these teams but
- 10:54Speaker 3: they're getting mauled and they're not giving any effort at
- 10:56Speaker 3: all um and and they're not showing any fight at.
- 11:00Speaker 2: All it's the way they're playing yes is the.
- 11:02Speaker 3: Cardinal sin amongst the flyers fan base if you're not
- 11:04Speaker 3: showing any fight like i think um A couple of
- 11:07Speaker 3: nights ago, like Tyson Forrester was getting kind of pummeled
- 11:10Speaker 3: a little bit and nobody jumped in. Like, you know,
- 11:13Speaker 3: nobody made that guy pay for it. So stuff like
- 11:17Speaker 3: that where it's just like, I don't know. I don't
- 11:20Speaker 3: want to accuse, you know, them of laziness, but like
- 11:24Speaker 3: it almost feels like there was this thing of like, okay,
- 11:27Speaker 3: we broke through, we made the playoffs. We even won
- 11:29Speaker 3: a round. We're it. This is what we're going to,
- 11:33Speaker 3: this is perennially. This is what's going to happen now.
- 11:35Speaker 3: All we got to do is just show up and
- 11:37Speaker 3: we'll be a playoff team. And, and they're, they're, they
- 11:41Speaker 3: were a bubble playoff team that essentially ran it back.
- 11:44Speaker 3: They didn't make any changes, you know, to the roster
- 11:47Speaker 3: really that much.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Because the hope is development. That's what it is. The
- 11:51Speaker 2: hope is that they were.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Actually going to develop. But you're going to have some
- 11:57Speaker 3: regression of the mean. You're going to have some other
- 11:59Speaker 3: teams that are going to come up that maybe had
- 12:01Speaker 3: a bad year last year that are going to have
- 12:03Speaker 3: a good year this year. And that's going to maybe
- 12:06Speaker 3: come at the expense of your spot. So that's all stuff.
- 12:09Speaker 3: I mean, there should never have been any kind of
- 12:11Speaker 3: feeling of, okay, we're a playoff team now. We're good.
- 12:15Speaker 3: They are the very definition of a bubble team. And
- 12:20Speaker 3: it's funny because I still, even with this awful start,
- 12:23Speaker 3: it feels like the Flyers are always a team that
- 12:26Speaker 3: are good for like one or two, 10 game streaks
- 12:29Speaker 3: where they don't win a game. And then also in
- 12:32Speaker 3: the same season, one or two, 10 game streaks where
- 12:35Speaker 3: they don't lose a game. Like they're very streaky and
- 12:37Speaker 3: you usually get one or two of those streaks, you know,
- 12:41Speaker 3: of each of them per season. So there's, it's, it's
- 12:45Speaker 3: funny to say, and cause it's so hard to see now, But,
- 12:48Speaker 3: you know, maybe it'll take Tockett getting fired for that
- 12:51Speaker 3: to happen. But there's going to come a time in
- 12:53Speaker 3: the season where I know it because it happens every
- 12:56Speaker 3: year with them where it's like, OK, they suck. Let's
- 12:59Speaker 3: start looking at who the big prospects are. Let's you know,
- 13:02Speaker 3: who could they draft as their number one defenseman or
- 13:05Speaker 3: number one center of the future? Yeah. And right when
- 13:07Speaker 3: you have that thought. That's when they get hot as
- 13:09Speaker 3: shit and they, and they, they go on one of
- 13:12Speaker 3: those 10 game, you know, win streaks and then they're
- 13:15Speaker 3: kind of middle of the pack again. And that it
- 13:17Speaker 3: happens every year. And I fully expect it to happen
- 13:22Speaker 3: again this year.
- 13:23Speaker 1: You used the word. And I don't think it's this word.
- 13:27Speaker 1: And you also said you don't think it is either,
- 13:29Speaker 1: like laziness. There's a difference between laziness and, because I
- 13:33Speaker 1: don't think they're being lazy, but there's no fire.
- 13:36Speaker 2: There's no spark. There's a difference between those two things.
- 13:40Speaker 2: And when you have no spark and when you don't
- 13:43Speaker 2: have that fire, I think that comes down to the coach.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Coaches need to do that for their teams, especially this
- 13:50Speaker 1: team where expectations were There's going to be development happening
- 13:53Speaker 1: this year. And that's probably why they're running it back
- 13:56Speaker 1: with the same guys. Younger core of guys are going
- 13:58Speaker 1: to end up developing more. So we need to have
- 14:02Speaker 1: that spark coming from a leadership perspective.
- 14:04Speaker 2: And it's not there. Rick Tockett should be gone at
- 14:07Speaker 2: this point. That's where I'm at.
- 14:09Speaker 1: He should be gone to get and bring somebody in
- 14:12Speaker 1: who is going to be able to give this young
- 14:14Speaker 1: core a spark.
- 14:16Speaker 2: That's what they need.
- 14:17Speaker 3: And, you know, or I don't know if it's accountability
- 14:20Speaker 3: thing or, or what you have to do, but, or,
- 14:23Speaker 3: and not, you know, not trying to be like a,
- 14:26Speaker 3: you know, old school meathead fan, but like, get in
- 14:29Speaker 3: a fight, like get, you know, like when, when Forrester's
- 14:32Speaker 3: getting his ass kicked, somebody should jump in and maul somebody.
- 14:35Speaker 3: And I'm not trying to go back to thug hockey
- 14:37Speaker 3: or anything like that, or, you know, 1975 or whatever,
- 14:41Speaker 3: but like, you know, when something like that happens, that
- 14:45Speaker 3: should be a galvanizing thing where somebody steps in and
- 14:48Speaker 3: handles business and make somebody pay for doing something like that.
- 14:52Speaker 3: And then the team, galvanizes a little bit and comes together. And, and,
- 14:56Speaker 3: and that kind of gives everybody the kick in the ass, like,
- 14:59Speaker 3: all right, let's go. Like, but I just, I don't
- 15:03Speaker 3: see it. It's, it's, it's a very lifeless team right now.
- 15:06Speaker 2: It absolutely is. That's a great way to describe it. Lifeless.
- 15:09Speaker 1: They are completely lifeless, but I'll tell you right now,
- 15:12Speaker 1: as we are segueing into the next topic, there's a
- 15:15Speaker 1: team that is not lifeless here.
- 15:17Speaker 2: And it's the only one in.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Philadelphia thus far, you know, six or season hasn't necessarily
- 15:22Speaker 1: started yet.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 15:24Speaker 1: But the Philadelphia union, holy cow, everybody, the Philadelphia union,
- 15:30Speaker 1: thank goodness for them again, again, the only team that's
- 15:33Speaker 1: really giving us any hope here.
- 15:36Speaker 2: My gosh.
- 15:37Speaker 1: I mean, they, uh, real salt Lake. Uh, they took
- 15:42Speaker 1: it to them winning two, one. Did they win two,
- 15:44Speaker 1: one tonight as well?
- 15:46Speaker 3: No, it ended up being three to one, three to one.
- 15:49Speaker 3: And the good thing is, you know, it's, it's, you know,
- 15:52Speaker 3: it's a team taking advantage of an opportunity. So there
- 15:56Speaker 3: was a point in the, at the end of the
- 15:57Speaker 3: first half where Chicago scores a goal, um, goes up one, nothing, uh,
- 16:01Speaker 3: shortly afterward, one of their players, Jack Elliott, gets a
- 16:04Speaker 3: red card and gets booted from the game. So they're
- 16:06Speaker 3: now down a man for the rest of the game.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:09Speaker 3: And the union, okay, there's an advantage. We're going to
- 16:12Speaker 3: take it. We're going to make them pay, and that's
- 16:14Speaker 3: what good teams do. That's what you should always expect
- 16:18Speaker 3: your teams to do when they're given an advantage and
- 16:21Speaker 3: they came back in the second half with three goals,
- 16:24Speaker 3: one from Malosky and two from Bruno Damiani. So, yeah,
- 16:29Speaker 3: I mean, that's what you need to have in a
- 16:32Speaker 3: good team. This team is going to, okay, this happened.
- 16:36Speaker 3: This is something we can capitalize on, and we're going
- 16:38Speaker 3: to do it. And when somebody gives you something, You
- 16:42Speaker 3: take it. Yeah. And you you you make it, you know,
- 16:44Speaker 3: work to your advantage. And that's what they did tonight.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Bruno is absolutely killing it.
- 16:48Speaker 1: And look, before this particular game on the night of
- 16:52Speaker 1: the 14th of October here, you can go back to
- 16:57Speaker 1: right before or I'm sorry, right after the World Cup break,
- 17:00Speaker 1: 13 games unbeaten going all.
- 17:03Speaker 2: The way back to July 22nd.
- 17:05Speaker 3: It's 14 now, yeah.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Now it's 14.
- 17:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Yes. Oh, my gosh. What is it? They've won eight
- 17:11Speaker 2: games in a row here, I believe, at this point.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Franchise records. Franchise records here at this point. The 2020,
- 17:20Speaker 1: the 2022, the 2025 teams never put streaks like this together.
- 17:24Speaker 1: And I'm not sure how many points they actually have
- 17:27Speaker 1: right now at this point, but they took 35 of
- 17:30Speaker 1: 39 points during that run, during the 13 games.
- 17:33Speaker 2: I'm not sure what it is. right now with the
- 17:36Speaker 2: 14th game, which is absolutely insane.
- 17:39Speaker 3: It is crazy. 45 points on the season. They're in
- 17:43Speaker 3: sixth place in the East. They were in 15th. They
- 17:47Speaker 3: were in dead last. Now they're in six. So yeah,
- 17:50Speaker 3: I mean, they, they've man, everything, everything you can ask
- 17:54Speaker 3: a team to do. And it's, it's, it's kind of
- 17:57Speaker 3: a lesson, I guess, for, um, you know, the flyers,
- 18:00Speaker 3: anybody who's well, because the team.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Completely saved their season because they weren't afraid to fire
- 18:05Speaker 1: their coach. And yes, it helped that they brought back
- 18:08Speaker 1: Kai Wagner, who's a top three union player of all time,
- 18:11Speaker 1: maybe top two player of all time, but they weren't
- 18:14Speaker 1: afraid to fire their coach and look what happened.
- 18:17Speaker 3: Yeah. And it's also a lesson for, you know, maybe
- 18:20Speaker 3: some of us in the fan base, you know, you
- 18:22Speaker 3: take a guy like, like Damiani who, you know, had
- 18:25Speaker 3: a couple of goals tonight. He's had during this run,
- 18:28Speaker 3: he's been scoring quite a bit. And it's like earlier
- 18:31Speaker 3: this year before the world cup break. And even last
- 18:33Speaker 3: year it was like, he's not doing anything. It's like,
- 18:35Speaker 3: who the hell is this guy that you brought in
- 18:37Speaker 3: to be your striker? That's just not doing anything. And then,
- 18:41Speaker 3: you know, sometimes maybe, you know, you know, As somebody
- 18:45Speaker 3: that's always trying to learn more about this sport that
- 18:48Speaker 3: I'm trying to watch more of, it's just like, okay,
- 18:51Speaker 3: is it something with a fit where it takes a
- 18:53Speaker 3: while for a new guy to get into a system?
- 18:56Speaker 3: Or maybe it was once they changed managers, maybe this
- 19:01Speaker 3: system works better for him. But yeah, Damiani is going
- 19:06Speaker 3: from a guy who was like, oh my God, this
- 19:08Speaker 3: guy was terrible that they brought him in to. Now
- 19:11Speaker 3: he's scoring for him all the time. Yeah. It's great.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Just goes to show you.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
- 19:16Speaker 4: All right.
- 19:16Speaker 2: We're going to take a break.
- 19:17Speaker 1: And when we get back, folks, we're going to get
- 19:19Speaker 1: into some Philadelphia Eagles talk. We're going to bring things
- 19:22Speaker 1: down a bit. We're going to bring things down with
- 19:24Speaker 1: this Eagles team. Stick around for the bitch fest. Stick
- 19:29Speaker 1: around for the negadelphia. It's coming your way.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Stick with us. We are back to talk about the
- 19:37Speaker 2: Philadelphia Eagles.
- 19:39Speaker 1: And this season, as we are looking towards week six,
- 19:42Speaker 1: this team's going to be facing the Carolina Panthers, who
- 19:45Speaker 1: has a quarterback, by the way, on an incredible hot
- 19:49Speaker 1: streak and has seemed to actually hit his stride, is
- 19:51Speaker 1: really understanding the game of football in his fourth season.
- 19:54Speaker 1: He's looking at a contract year. And I'm talking about
- 19:57Speaker 1: Bryce Young. My gosh, he's one of the best quarterbacks
- 19:59Speaker 1: in the league heading into week five. He's coming off
- 20:02Speaker 1: a bye week. The whole team coming off a bye week.
- 20:05Speaker 1: The Philadelphia Eagles coming back from London after a horrendous
- 20:09Speaker 1: loss that was Nick Sirianni's fault, and rightfully so, admitting
- 20:14Speaker 1: that it was his fault, having Jake Elliott not kick
- 20:17Speaker 1: the ball into the end zone at the end of
- 20:18Speaker 1: the game, which led the Jaguars to, and the Eagles
- 20:22Speaker 1: special teams failing, led the Jaguars to kick a last-second
- 20:26Speaker 1: field goal where the Eagles are now two and three
- 20:29Speaker 1: on the season. It's a disaster, Len. There's a lot
- 20:32Speaker 1: of rebuild going on in the middle of the season
- 20:34Speaker 1: with the offensive line. Jalen Hurts not always looking as
- 20:38Speaker 1: good as a Super Bowl MVP looks. You got a
- 20:44Speaker 1: talent in Giad Campbell. who looks horrendous in pass coverage. Thankfully,
- 20:49Speaker 1: the pass rush is coming on a bit. Jalen Carter
- 20:53Speaker 1: looked really excellent last week, looking like his 2024 form.
- 20:58Speaker 1: But man, it's tough to watch this team because they're
- 21:01Speaker 1: doing the same shit over and over every week. Second
- 21:04Speaker 1: half of games, they are the worst in the league
- 21:06Speaker 1: in terms of offensive productivity, number 32 in the league.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Same shit over and over, man. I'm going to be
- 21:11Speaker 1: talking about it with Lou, but man, it's tough to
- 21:14Speaker 1: watch this team.
- 21:15Speaker 3: Yeah, it's bad. I mean, I was at work and
- 21:19Speaker 3: I was watching the game against Jacksonville. It was 9.30
- 21:22Speaker 3: kickoff because it's in London. I was like, oh, okay, cool.
- 21:25Speaker 3: I'll watch the whole thing. And I did. And yeah,
- 21:28Speaker 3: especially in the second half, there was really points where
- 21:30Speaker 3: it's like, oh my God, this offense is so hard
- 21:34Speaker 3: to watch. And it's tough because you're doing basically an
- 21:37Speaker 3: offensive line rebuild on the fly. And it's just like
- 21:41Speaker 3: Hurst can't do anything without getting sacked. And it's tough,
- 21:44Speaker 3: you know. You think of those Super Bowl years, and
- 21:46Speaker 3: you went from Prime Lane Johnson and Jason Kelsey at
- 21:50Speaker 3: the end of his career and ascending Jordan Mailata and
- 21:53Speaker 3: healthy Landon Dickerson to what they have now, which is just... Man,
- 21:59Speaker 3: it's just a.
- 22:01Speaker 2: It's an assorted cast of characters, it seems.
- 22:03Speaker 3: Yeah, it's not even the same thing. So it's just like...
- 22:07Speaker 3: I don't know how much of it I put on
- 22:09Speaker 3: Jalen Hurts. I mean, it's really... it doesn't seem fair
- 22:14Speaker 3: to put that much on him because, you know, he's
- 22:17Speaker 3: got a bunch of guys that are basically learning their
- 22:20Speaker 3: way through the NFL, protecting him. And it's just, it's
- 22:24Speaker 3: not a good situation. And the play calling isn't great.
- 22:28Speaker 3: You know, and I know Mannion's already like, didn't he
- 22:31Speaker 3: leave and not speak to, you know, reporters because basically
- 22:34Speaker 3: Sirianni started calling the plays.
- 22:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:37Speaker 3: This is what I understand. So, so, okay. So there's
- 22:40Speaker 3: a riff there that's now starting. Um, it's just bad. It's,
- 22:45Speaker 3: it's bad all the way around. Um, yeah. And then
- 22:49Speaker 3: it feels like this is two weeks in a row. Cause, um,
- 22:51Speaker 3: it feels like two years in a row, but I mean,
- 22:54Speaker 3: Sirianni can, can be blamed for basically losing the games
- 22:59Speaker 3: with the way he coached. I mean, and, and.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Yeah, and I'm going to be, I'm going to be
- 23:02Speaker 1: talking to Lou a little bit, a little bit later
- 23:05Speaker 1: here in the show about this. And I, I, See,
- 23:09Speaker 1: I go back and forth with this because I'm like, man,
- 23:11Speaker 1: they've been to the playoffs every year. Two of those
- 23:14Speaker 1: years went to the Super Bowl. And I'm going to
- 23:16Speaker 1: bring this up to Lou and see what he has
- 23:18Speaker 1: to say. But I wonder if after a certain period
- 23:21Speaker 1: of time, certain things just get old and they get stale,
- 23:24Speaker 1: no matter what the resume says.
- 23:26Speaker 2: And that's how I'm feeling right now.
- 23:29Speaker 1: It's like, my God, this guy was able to not
- 23:30Speaker 1: just go to two Super Bowls in Nick Sirianni.
- 23:33Speaker 2: He was able to go to two Super Bowls, win
- 23:35Speaker 2: one of.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Them, Jalen Hurts being an MVP and in that game
- 23:38Speaker 1: where he played lights out and yes, he had a
- 23:41Speaker 1: fantastic offensive line in front of him, but I wonder
- 23:44Speaker 1: if it gets stale after a while, even with the successes.
- 23:49Speaker 3: It could be, it could very well be. Um, and
- 23:52Speaker 3: it's tough cause I have that same thought of like,
- 23:54Speaker 3: you know, if you go, let's say, you know, you
- 23:59Speaker 3: go back in time 15 years and you, you talk
- 24:02Speaker 3: to all of us and you say, you're going to
- 24:04Speaker 3: have a coach, who in his first five years, you
- 24:07Speaker 3: go to the playoffs every year, you go to two
- 24:09Speaker 3: Super Bowls, you win one, you lose one, you're good
- 24:13Speaker 3: every single year, and then in year six, you fire
- 24:17Speaker 3: him partway through. The majority of us would be like,
- 24:21Speaker 3: he did all that and you're firing him? What? But
- 24:25Speaker 3: I get it. I get it. And I saw another
- 24:27Speaker 3: thing where it's like, this is the Eagles record under
- 24:30Speaker 3: Sirianni when you had Shane Steichen and Kellen Moore as
- 24:34Speaker 3: your offensive coordinator. really like gaudy record and this is
- 24:38Speaker 3: their record with every other offensive coordinator and it was
- 24:41Speaker 3: just like it was was it maybe their scheme and
- 24:45Speaker 3: and what they did and obviously the talent around them
- 24:48Speaker 3: too yeah because those teams were way more talented than
- 24:51Speaker 3: it seems like this team is right now particularly with
- 24:53Speaker 3: all the injuries right so you know is is is
- 24:57Speaker 3: maybe some of that some of that success that sirianni
- 25:00Speaker 3: had should it be more attributed to some of his
- 25:03Speaker 3: offensive coordinators that came and went once they won a
- 25:06Speaker 3: Super Bowl and got a better job.
- 25:07Speaker 2: It's a very good point. It's a good point.
- 25:09Speaker 1: But I mean, the biggest theme, and again, I'm going
- 25:11Speaker 1: to talk to Lou about it too, but I think
- 25:12Speaker 1: it's important for us to really hone in on is
- 25:15Speaker 1: the third down issue, the third and out rate at
- 25:18Speaker 1: this point. Look, you go back to 2022, the third
- 25:21Speaker 1: and out rate for the Eagles, again, 2022, 28%. That
- 25:23Speaker 1: was seventh in the NFL. Then move to the next year, 2023. 31.1%.
- 25:33Speaker 1: That's 11th in the league, 2024, 32%. That's 17th in
- 25:36Speaker 1: the league. See where this is trending. Things are getting
- 25:38Speaker 1: a little worse. 2025 last year, it was 38.2%, which
- 25:40Speaker 1: was 28th in the league. Now this year, their third
- 25:42Speaker 1: and out rate is 45.3% last in league 32nd league.
- 25:43Speaker 2: It's it, this isn't sustainable.
- 26:01Speaker 1: It's not sustainable and you know, Jeffrey Lurie is not
- 26:04Speaker 1: going to be happy with this at all. He's an
- 26:07Speaker 1: offensive guy. He wants to see passing yards. You need
- 26:10Speaker 1: passing yards during the course of your second half. That's
- 26:13Speaker 1: not happening, especially when you have, well, and with the injuries,
- 26:17Speaker 1: especially once, especially once.
- 26:19Speaker 3: You get down in a game and you have to
- 26:21Speaker 3: throw the ball and the other team knows you have
- 26:22Speaker 3: to throw the ball. Yes. Yeah. It becomes much harder
- 26:26Speaker 3: because you're, you're more predictable as an offense. And also again,
- 26:31Speaker 3: Your line sucks. So, you know, he's got to stand
- 26:34Speaker 3: back there and get time to fall that he's not getting,
- 26:38Speaker 3: you know, what do you, what do you do? How
- 26:40Speaker 3: do you, how do you fix that in season? I
- 26:42Speaker 3: don't know.
- 26:43Speaker 1: I'm not sure how you do it because the Eagles
- 26:45Speaker 1: offensive line has allowed a 45.6% pressure rate this season.
- 26:50Speaker 2: That is 31st in the NFL.
- 26:53Speaker 3: Like, and you're also doing it when, when, you know, your,
- 26:58Speaker 3: your first wide receiver and your first running back are,
- 27:01Speaker 3: are out injured.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Exactly. Like you can't get the run game going.
- 27:04Speaker 1: You can't get the run game going, especially with this
- 27:06Speaker 1: past week in the second half.
- 27:08Speaker 2: When they carried the ball, your best offensive linemen are gone.
- 27:10Speaker 3: Yes.
- 27:11Speaker 2: They carried the ball.
- 27:12Speaker 3: Best makers are gone. Yeah.
- 27:13Speaker 2: When you carry the ball eight times for six yards
- 27:16Speaker 2: and a half, that's not good.
- 27:18Speaker 4: It's hard to do.
- 27:19Speaker 3: No, it's not.
- 27:19Speaker 2: It's hard to do.
- 27:21Speaker 3: You're, you're essentially asking Hertz to make chicken salad out
- 27:25Speaker 3: of chicken shit. Yeah. Yeah. It's just not going to work.
- 27:29Speaker 3: Oh gosh.
- 27:29Speaker 1: I mean, we could sit here and bitch and moan
- 27:31Speaker 1: about this team until the cows come.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Home even more.
- 27:34Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 27:35Speaker 3: Do you have any more? I, I, I just, I,
- 27:37Speaker 3: I mean, it's just tough because you're just like, you know, your,
- 27:42Speaker 3: your team can always go through a rough patch and
- 27:45Speaker 3: stuff like that. But if you can like look down
- 27:47Speaker 3: the road a little bit and maybe see something, it's like, okay, they're,
- 27:52Speaker 3: they're going to get untracked at this point. But you
- 27:55Speaker 3: look at, again, your offensive line is gone. Your playmakers
- 27:59Speaker 3: are gone. How does that happen? I don't know. At
- 28:05Speaker 3: what point does it just like, okay, every team has
- 28:09Speaker 3: that year where everything goes wrong, everybody gets hurt, and it's, okay,
- 28:14Speaker 3: it's a reset year. It's going to be a rebuild
- 28:17Speaker 3: year kind of a little bit. Yeah. And this might
- 28:19Speaker 3: just be what we're walking into here with this team.
- 28:23Speaker 1: The trade deadline is less than a month away. November
- 28:26Speaker 1: 10th is the NFL trade deadline. I would not be
- 28:29Speaker 1: surprised at all if we see a new offensive lineman,
- 28:33Speaker 1: somebody who's a bit solid, because if you look at
- 28:36Speaker 1: the Eagles' 2028 draft picks, two first-rounders, two second-rounders.
- 28:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:42Speaker 2: There are assets there.
- 28:43Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 28:44Speaker 3: So you're saying you're, you're thinking that they, that they
- 28:47Speaker 3: might be buyers.
- 28:48Speaker 1: I think, I think they're definitely going to be a
- 28:50Speaker 1: buyer before the trade deadline this year to get somebody
- 28:53Speaker 1: who is a really good either center or left guard
- 28:57Speaker 1: who can say, or even right guard. I mean, Tyler Steen,
- 29:00Speaker 1: he's not really developing into a, I mean, this team
- 29:05Speaker 1: misses McKay Becton big time.
- 29:08Speaker 2: They really do. Uh, But I think.
- 29:11Speaker 1: He's going to be a buyer, and I think he's
- 29:13Speaker 1: going to be using some of those draft picks perhaps
- 29:15Speaker 1: to get a top-quality center or even, who knows, maybe
- 29:19Speaker 1: even a right tackle.
- 29:20Speaker 4: Who knows?
- 29:21Speaker 3: Yeah. It's tough because I thought maybe they'll sell a
- 29:24Speaker 3: little bit in order to get more picks and kind
- 29:27Speaker 3: of build the team out. Yeah. But it's tough because
- 29:30Speaker 3: I have guys in my work that are Cowboys fans,
- 29:34Speaker 3: and we'll go at each other a little bit and
- 29:36Speaker 3: make fun of each other. We're laughing because it was
- 29:39Speaker 3: just like, your team sucks, my team sucks. Washington and
- 29:44Speaker 3: New York just tied. It was like, nobody wants to
- 29:48Speaker 3: win this division. So, I mean, that's the weird thing
- 29:51Speaker 3: is as bad as things are for the Eagles right now,
- 29:55Speaker 3: technically it's still there in front of them if they
- 29:58Speaker 3: can get right. I mean, it is technically still there.
- 30:02Speaker 3: Maybe this is one of those years where like, it
- 30:04Speaker 3: feels like every year there's a division where like the, the,
- 30:08Speaker 3: whoever wins the division and makes it in the playoffs
- 30:09Speaker 3: is either like 500 or a game on the 500. Yeah.
- 30:13Speaker 3: That might be the NFC East this year. Who knows? Yeah.
- 30:16Speaker 2: We've seen it before. It's happened before in the past.
- 30:18Speaker 3: Look at the giants. I mean, giants are leading the division,
- 30:21Speaker 3: but they're starting quarterbacks out for the year. So, You know,
- 30:27Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 30:28Speaker 1: The Panthers, who the Eagles are playing this week, last
- 30:30Speaker 1: year they were 8-8 and won their division and went
- 30:34Speaker 1: to the playoffs.
- 30:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:35Speaker 2: I mean, it can happen. It can happen, folks.
- 30:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:38Speaker 1: If you're watching on YouTube, let us know what you're
- 30:39Speaker 1: thinking about this Eagles team. The Flyers, who we talked
- 30:42Speaker 1: about earlier, leave us some comments below about the union
- 30:45Speaker 1: as well. And we'd love to hear from you. In fact, Len,
- 30:50Speaker 1: I didn't have it on the agenda because I was
- 30:52Speaker 1: just checking the PST email a little later in today.
- 30:59Speaker 1: But we got an email from a gentleman, Francis Sweeney,
- 31:02Speaker 1: who has emailed us on occasion before. He was over
- 31:06Speaker 1: at the London game. And he was describing it. I
- 31:09Speaker 1: just want to read it really quick here. He said, Howdy, gents.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Not sure if you could tell from the broadcast this
- 31:15Speaker 1: past week, Eagles-Jags game, but we absolutely took over that
- 31:19Speaker 1: stadium and the city. Birds fans everywhere all weekend. It
- 31:23Speaker 1: was incredible to be a part of it. And we
- 31:26Speaker 1: were clearly getting to the Jaguars offense as they were
- 31:30Speaker 1: doing silent counts for the majority of the game. Probably
- 31:33Speaker 1: about 80% Birds fans inside, 10% Jags fans outside. and
- 31:38Speaker 1: 10% general football fans wearing random jerseys are just happy
- 31:41Speaker 1: to see a game. They actually ran out of draft
- 31:44Speaker 1: beer in our section by halftime.
- 31:47Speaker 3: Wow.
- 31:48Speaker 1: London is such an awesome city. Not that much more
- 31:50Speaker 1: travel time than flying to the West Coast for the game.
- 31:53Speaker 1: I'd be pumped to do another trip like this next season.
- 31:56Speaker 1: Maybe not if it meant costing a home game. Our
- 31:58Speaker 1: fan base travels so well, and I would not be
- 32:01Speaker 1: surprised if the league asked Laurie to support this on
- 32:05Speaker 1: the reg today. Hopefully we can get this offense sorted
- 32:08Speaker 1: out fast. Yes, absolutely with you, Francis. Thanks so much
- 32:11Speaker 1: for shooting us off an email there. Francis Philadelphia sports
- 32:14Speaker 1: table at gmail.com is where you can email the show.
- 32:17Speaker 2: We'd love to respond to it here on the pod.
- 32:20Speaker 2: I mean, great email.
- 32:21Speaker 1: I love hearing from folks that go overseas like Francis
- 32:24Speaker 1: did talk about his time there out of beer by halftime.
- 32:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:30Speaker 3: I mean, you can, you can say a lot of
- 32:32Speaker 3: things about the Eagles and how they're doing, but they're, Man,
- 32:35Speaker 3: their fan base travels. I've seen plenty of games where
- 32:41Speaker 3: it's like, even out on the West Coast, where it's
- 32:44Speaker 3: like the Eagles fan base is noticeably there. You can
- 32:47Speaker 3: hear them. They've had some games against the, I think
- 32:52Speaker 3: one or two games against the Chargers out West where
- 32:55Speaker 3: it was like, this sounds like an Eagles home game.
- 32:59Speaker 3: They definitely travel and they represent the team well for
- 33:04Speaker 3: as much you know, uh, flack is, is that fan
- 33:07Speaker 3: base gets, you know, over the years, you know, Oh,
- 33:10Speaker 3: they're thugs, blah, blah, blah. I mean, they travel, they
- 33:12Speaker 3: support the team.
- 33:13Speaker 4: They do.
- 33:13Speaker 3: Um, they, they do everything you could want as a fan. So, uh,
- 33:17Speaker 3: that the, the fan base is the least of the
- 33:19Speaker 3: Eagles problems right now.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 33:21Speaker 1: One of the best fan bases in the world, for sure.
- 33:24Speaker 1: Arguably the best fan base in my opinion. So that
- 33:27Speaker 1: being said, buddy, I'm going to let you go. And
- 33:29Speaker 1: then we're going to get to our conversation with, uh,
- 33:31Speaker 1: Lou DiBiase. You got, you got anything, uh, as you're
- 33:34Speaker 1: heading out of here?
- 33:36Speaker 3: Um, yeah, maybe if you're, if you're going to contact
- 33:39Speaker 3: the show and who gets fired first, Sirianni or talk it,
- 33:42Speaker 3: maybe we make it a poll question.
- 33:43Speaker 2: Let's do it.
- 33:44Speaker 4: All right.
- 33:44Speaker 2: You know what? I should put a poll question up on, on,
- 33:47Speaker 2: on YouTube. I'll do that for sure.
- 33:48Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 33:50Speaker 4: All right, buddy.
- 33:51Speaker 2: I'm going to let you go, folks. We're going to
- 33:52Speaker 2: take a break.
- 33:53Speaker 1: When we get back, Lou DiBiase from the locked on
- 33:55Speaker 1: Eagles podcast joins the show.
- 33:56Speaker 2: Stick with us. And now on the table.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Joining us this week to dive into this Philadelphia Eagles team. Yeah,
- 34:08Speaker 1: we have to get into it because the expectations were
- 34:12Speaker 1: high coming into this season. As we head into week six,
- 34:15Speaker 1: we know where the expectations are for this team. The
- 34:18Speaker 1: confusion surrounding the Philadelphia Eagles. with us fans and also,
- 34:22Speaker 1: I would imagine, with the team in the front office
- 34:25Speaker 1: as well as we are moving forward here.
- 34:27Speaker 2: Joining us from the.
- 34:27Speaker 1: Locked On Eagles podcast over at the Locked On Network.
- 34:31Speaker 1: Always enjoy listening to his voice on the Locked On
- 34:34Speaker 1: Eagles podcast. I subscribe on Apple Podcast. You can also
- 34:38Speaker 1: subscribe on YouTube if you're watching us there and whatever
- 34:41Speaker 1: audio podcast platform you're listening to us on. We've got
- 34:44Speaker 1: the one and only Louie DiBiase, my friend. Thanks for
- 34:47Speaker 1: joining us here for this discussion that I'm not sure
- 34:49Speaker 1: how it's going to go, but man, what a season.
- 34:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I appreciate it, man. It's been a tough five
- 34:55Speaker 5: weeks for sure. It just feels very Groundhog's Day-like compared
- 34:59Speaker 5: to 2025. It just feels like we're kind of covering
- 35:02Speaker 5: the same game over and over, and.
- 35:03Speaker 4: I'm starting to lose my mind.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Over and over and over.
- 35:05Speaker 4: I appreciate you having me on.
- 35:07Speaker 1: It's great to see you, buddy, and it's great to
- 35:10Speaker 1: hear your voice as well. Look, we've got to get
- 35:12Speaker 1: into the first storyline here. And I really want to
- 35:16Speaker 1: talk about the injuries on this team. And from the
- 35:19Speaker 1: standpoint of, yes, some teams get very unlucky with injuries
- 35:23Speaker 1: during the course of their seasons. You know, we've seen
- 35:25Speaker 1: this time and time again with teams like San Francisco 49ers.
- 35:29Speaker 1: But I do wonder, Lou, how much of this really
- 35:32Speaker 1: has to deal with the starters not playing during preseason
- 35:36Speaker 1: games and really kind of getting into that quote football
- 35:39Speaker 1: shape to start the season. What are your thoughts on
- 35:42Speaker 1: this storyline in this narrative as this team has been
- 35:44Speaker 1: just decimated by injuries as we head into week six?
- 35:48Speaker 4: Yeah, it is crazy.
- 35:49Speaker 5: It feels like the Eagles have been the healthiest team
- 35:51Speaker 5: in football since 2021. It's been a big reason they've
- 35:55Speaker 5: been able to sustain a certain level of success, you know,
- 35:57Speaker 5: making the playoffs every year, going to two Super Bowls
- 36:00Speaker 5: and winning one. They've got a younger roster. Their medical
- 36:03Speaker 5: staff has improved and they've been very healthy. But it
- 36:06Speaker 5: does feel like, you know, you mentioned the 49ers and.
- 36:08Speaker 5: even going back to 2018 and 2019, 2020, the Eagles,
- 36:12Speaker 5: there's just certain times an NFL team deals with an
- 36:15Speaker 5: insane amount of bad luck with injuries.
- 36:17Speaker 4: And maybe you're right.
- 36:18Speaker 5: That part of it is just, these guys are not
- 36:21Speaker 5: ready to go as much as they used to be
- 36:23Speaker 5: in September.
- 36:23Speaker 4: But again, I don't know.
- 36:25Speaker 5: I mean, just when you see how many injuries there
- 36:27Speaker 5: are on both sides of the ball and it's some
- 36:30Speaker 5: older players, right? Like, uh, you know, Jonathan Grenard, a veteran,
- 36:34Speaker 5: Atlanta Dickerson, a veteran, but then it's, you know, younger
- 36:37Speaker 5: players too. It's tough to pinpoint exactly what the main
- 36:41Speaker 5: reason is. There's just sometimes seasons like this, where you're
- 36:44Speaker 5: not always going to have the bill of health you've
- 36:46Speaker 5: had for the last six years. And we saw that
- 36:49Speaker 5: after super bowl 52, sometimes you have to overcome injury
- 36:53Speaker 5: adversity and And right now the Eagles are dealing with
- 36:55Speaker 5: that the same way they did those three years.
- 36:57Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 36:58Speaker 1: When you're looking at your fourth string running back to
- 37:01Speaker 1: start games, I mean, you're really in a crappy situation.
- 37:04Speaker 4: Third string center. I mean, it's, it's a lot to
- 37:07Speaker 4: overcome for sure.
- 37:08Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 37:08Speaker 1: Well, look, the next storyline Lou, I want to dive
- 37:10Speaker 1: into is the constant theme that everyone is discussing. And
- 37:17Speaker 1: we even, we even touched on it before we hit
- 37:18Speaker 1: the record button as well. The drop off in the
- 37:22Speaker 1: second half of games where this offense can't do a thing.
- 37:26Speaker 2: A recurring theme over and over and over again, it seems.
- 37:30Speaker 1: Like for the past two years, At this point, this
- 37:33Speaker 1: Eagles offense is currently ranked number 32 in yards during
- 37:36Speaker 1: the second half of games. And as Zach Berman recently reported,
- 37:41Speaker 1: the difference between them and the number 31 team, who
- 37:44Speaker 1: is actually Minnesota, is greater than the difference between the
- 37:48Speaker 1: number 31 team and the number 12 ranked team in
- 37:51Speaker 1: this regard. That is how far behind they are. And
- 37:55Speaker 1: it is a huge problem as this team is moving
- 37:57Speaker 1: forward this season. Just this past week in the game
- 38:01Speaker 1: against the Jacksonville Jaguars, there were eight carries, eight carries
- 38:06Speaker 1: for six yards in the second half, which is it's
- 38:09Speaker 1: really hard to do for a professional football team, quite frankly. Yeah.
- 38:13Speaker 1: Can they actually fix this with when the offensive coaching
- 38:18Speaker 1: just hasn't done anything.
- 38:19Speaker 2: To alter this trajectory here?
- 38:22Speaker 1: This is the main storyline here heading into week six.
- 38:25Speaker 1: And again, been prevalent over the past couple of years.
- 38:27Speaker 1: What are your thoughts here, Lou? I wish I could say, yes,
- 38:30Speaker 1: there's a way to fix it. But like you said,
- 38:32Speaker 1: this has been an issue since week one of 2025.
- 38:34Speaker 1: And the old identity of the Eagles is not coming
- 38:38Speaker 1: back anytime soon. They're not going to get back to
- 38:40Speaker 1: the 2024 elite rushing team that was able to put
- 38:43Speaker 1: games away easily. Like that offensive line is not coming back.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Prime Lane Johnson is back.
- 38:49Speaker 4: Gone.
- 38:50Speaker 5: He's retired, right? Landon Dickerson, I think is a shell
- 38:53Speaker 5: of who he used to be. You traded away. Cam Juergens,
- 38:55Speaker 5: Tyler Steen is not McKay Becton. Jordan, my Lada is
- 38:58Speaker 5: still great, but that's the only constant you still have left.
- 39:01Speaker 5: And these coaches, this quarterback, they've not been able to
- 39:04Speaker 5: find a new identity. They've not been able to find
- 39:07Speaker 5: different answers than the one. It's like a pitcher in baseball.
- 39:10Speaker 5: I mean, they had a fastball But they don't have
- 39:13Speaker 5: a change up. They don't have a curveball. They don't
- 39:15Speaker 5: have those other answers. And that is why you've seen
- 39:18Speaker 5: what you have seen these last two years. When a
- 39:20Speaker 5: team adjusts at halftime, the Eagles offense just completely breaks.
- 39:24Speaker 5: And it's so unique in the history of football because
- 39:28Speaker 5: you've seen a lot of inept offenses.
- 39:30Speaker 4: In the league throughout league history, right? When they just
- 39:32Speaker 4: can't move the football at all.
- 39:33Speaker 2: The Cleveland Browns are the Cleveland Browns.
- 39:36Speaker 4: Yes, exactly.
- 39:37Speaker 1: It amizes what you just said. And I don't even
- 39:39Speaker 1: think we've seen this from the Cleveland Browns.
- 39:42Speaker 5: And the difference is like, we've seen teams this bad
- 39:45Speaker 5: in the second half of games, but I've never seen
- 39:47Speaker 5: a team that's very productive in the first half that
- 39:50Speaker 5: has the track record. The Eagles do that are this inept.
- 39:53Speaker 5: Like I did not know that stat. You said of
- 39:55Speaker 5: the difference between 31 and 32 is more than 12
- 39:59Speaker 5: to 31. Like that's how bad the Eagles are. But
- 40:02Speaker 5: in the first half of games, Jalen hurts is actually
- 40:05Speaker 5: fourth in the league and EPA per play.
- 40:07Speaker 2: It's crazy quarterback.
- 40:09Speaker 4: And then in the second half, he's 31st.
- 40:11Speaker 5: That is that kind of dramatic shift in a half
- 40:15Speaker 5: is one of the most unique things I've ever seen
- 40:17Speaker 5: in football. But it is a direct connection to the
- 40:21Speaker 5: quarterback and the head coach just not being able to
- 40:24Speaker 5: find answers and elevate this team when an offensive line
- 40:27Speaker 5: in a run game cannot carry you. And now they're
- 40:29Speaker 5: asking a first time play caller again, two years in
- 40:32Speaker 5: a row to solve things for them. And it's too
- 40:35Speaker 5: much for that coach. And that is why you're in
- 40:37Speaker 5: the situation you're in. And if it does not change,
- 40:39Speaker 5: if it continues in this dramatic way, I don't know
- 40:42Speaker 5: who's going to get replaced at some point, but jobs
- 40:45Speaker 5: will be lost. Knowing the way Jeffrey Lurie thinks about offense,
- 40:48Speaker 5: dealing with this for two years in a row, he
- 40:50Speaker 5: won't deal with it for a third season.
- 40:52Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 40:53Speaker 1: It's so interesting how you mentioned the fact that they
- 40:55Speaker 1: have a first year play caller again in Sean Mannion,
- 40:59Speaker 1: as they did last year with Kevin Petullo. but we
- 41:02Speaker 1: really do kind of see the same type of schematic
- 41:05Speaker 1: I guess, prowess, you would say, you know, from coach
- 41:09Speaker 1: to coach. And it leads me to believe, really, is
- 41:11Speaker 1: this Nick Sirianni's offense that's being run? Yes, we are
- 41:14Speaker 1: seeing more pre-snap motion. Yes, we are seeing some more
- 41:17Speaker 1: intermediate routes being run. And Jalen Hurts completing those passes
- 41:22Speaker 1: on a weekly basis, which has been welcoming. But I
- 41:25Speaker 1: don't know if the overall offensive schematic, again, you know,
- 41:29Speaker 1: direction this team is going is really any different.
- 41:33Speaker 5: And I think a lot of that is also on
- 41:34Speaker 5: the quarterback too, though. I think Jalen hurts, you know,
- 41:37Speaker 5: they're calling more plays over the middle of the field,
- 41:39Speaker 5: but he's actually attempting less plays over the middle than
- 41:43Speaker 5: he was last year.
- 41:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 41:45Speaker 5: Even though Sean Nannion is hiked up the percentage of
- 41:47Speaker 5: routes going over the middle by like, I think it was.
- 41:49Speaker 5: according to next gen stats, like seven or 8%. And
- 41:52Speaker 5: so I don't think Jalen is evolving enough either. And
- 41:55Speaker 5: the problem is not only is he, he is a
- 41:57Speaker 5: much better passer than he used to be earlier in
- 41:59Speaker 5: his career, right? But the trajectory, the improvement as a
- 42:02Speaker 5: passer is not going as high as the regression is
- 42:07Speaker 5: for Jalen as a runner. That's another reason for these
- 42:09Speaker 5: second half issues. When a team adjusts and your coaching
- 42:13Speaker 5: cannot get it done, finding answers for you, Jalen used
- 42:16Speaker 5: to be able to problem solve with his legs. And
- 42:18Speaker 5: it's been kind of a non-factor these last two years.
- 42:21Speaker 5: I don't know if it's because of injuries wearing on
- 42:23Speaker 5: his body. I don't know if it's a reluctance to
- 42:25Speaker 5: do it, but Jalen is also just not making plays
- 42:29Speaker 5: outside of structure with his legs anymore consistently enough.
- 42:31Speaker 4: And so I think a lot of this is on
- 42:33Speaker 4: the quarterback too.
- 42:33Speaker 5: Like he is just, an inconsistent pocket passer and I
- 42:37Speaker 5: don't think he'll ever improve enough to justify not running
- 42:40Speaker 5: like they need him to move more this year if
- 42:43Speaker 5: they're going to fix this thing well we.
- 42:44Speaker 1: Also need him and this offense in general to do
- 42:48Speaker 1: a little bit more on first down and I want
- 42:50Speaker 1: to talk about first down a bit before we get
- 42:52Speaker 1: to break here their first down success rate is 31st
- 42:56Speaker 1: in the NFL their EPA on first down is 28th
- 43:02Speaker 1: in the league, Lou. And I said during our post-game
- 43:05Speaker 1: podcast show this past weekend, I would just love for
- 43:08Speaker 1: this offense and this team to gain just five yards
- 43:11Speaker 1: on first down. Every now and again, it would make
- 43:14Speaker 1: an incredible difference offensively for this team. What are your
- 43:19Speaker 1: thoughts about how and why their success rate on first
- 43:22Speaker 1: down is just so dismal?
- 43:24Speaker 5: I still think they're too committed to running the ball early.
- 43:27Speaker 5: And I think easy yards, you have to be able
- 43:30Speaker 5: to find like that. You said, you said that five
- 43:32Speaker 5: to seven yard play, right?
- 43:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:34Speaker 5: To set up a second and five, a second and
- 43:36Speaker 5: three manageable situations, right? They don't often find those answers
- 43:41Speaker 5: in the passing game. That's normally come from the run game.
- 43:44Speaker 5: If I'm the Eagles. And I think there was actually, uh,
- 43:47Speaker 5: as miserable as it was. And they only had one
- 43:49Speaker 5: field goal drive all half. I actually think they against
- 43:52Speaker 5: Jacksonville discovered a little bit. They move the football a
- 43:55Speaker 5: little bit more in this game. Comparatively speaking, right?
- 43:57Speaker 3: Right.
- 43:58Speaker 5: Um, I think they need to come out of these halves,
- 44:00Speaker 5: aggressive throwing from the shotgun. It's going to be a
- 44:03Speaker 5: rollercoaster ride in that way. Jalen's always going to be
- 44:05Speaker 5: inconsistent if you throw 40 plus times a game, but
- 44:08Speaker 5: when they've moved the football this year, It's come from that.
- 44:12Speaker 5: Like Sean Mannion, the one thing I believe he can
- 44:14Speaker 5: really do right now is call plays to create separation
- 44:17Speaker 5: for receivers when they're throwing the ball from the shotgun.
- 44:21Speaker 5: I want them to almost start spreading it out, maybe
- 44:23Speaker 5: doing some no huddle empty set.
- 44:26Speaker 2: Exactly. That's what we were talking about on the postgame show.
- 44:28Speaker 1: It's like, why not start first down on empty set?
- 44:31Speaker 2: You know?
- 44:31Speaker 5: And Devante Smith, you have Don Tavian, Wicks, McKay, Lemon, Darius, Cooper.
- 44:36Speaker 5: Those are four reliable receivers. Maybe use some more four
- 44:39Speaker 5: receiver sets. I think that's the identity they need to
- 44:42Speaker 5: switch in the second half is be aggressive. I just
- 44:45Speaker 5: think they're still too conservative and you're right. There's a
- 44:48Speaker 5: direct correlation there with their first down struggles. I just,
- 44:50Speaker 5: I want them to go for it more. You know,
- 44:52Speaker 5: they've won the turnover battle two weeks in a row
- 44:54Speaker 5: and they're so committed to taking care of the ball.
- 44:57Speaker 5: But when you don't score points, you're Winning the turnover
- 44:59Speaker 5: battle doesn't matter.
- 45:00Speaker 4: You're still going to lose these games.
- 45:02Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 45:03Speaker 1: Again, folks, we're talking to Lou DiBiase from the Locked
- 45:05Speaker 1: on Eagles podcast. Lou, tell everybody where they can find
- 45:08Speaker 1: you on the interwebs out there if they want to
- 45:09Speaker 1: connect with you.
- 45:10Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely. I do a daily show on Locked on Eagles.
- 45:13Speaker 5: You can find our show on YouTube or wherever you
- 45:15Speaker 5: listen to the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast as well. And
- 45:18Speaker 5: then I'm on X at Locked on Birds is our
- 45:21Speaker 5: show page.
- 45:22Speaker 1: Very good, folks. We're going to take a break when
- 45:23Speaker 1: we get back. More Eagles talk coming your way. We
- 45:29Speaker 1: are back with our good buddy Lou DiBiase from the
- 45:31Speaker 1: Locked On Eagles podcast.
- 45:32Speaker 2: And as we continue to.
- 45:33Speaker 1: Talk about this Eagles team, as we're heading into week
- 45:36Speaker 1: six of this very disappointing season. Of course, obvious that
- 45:40Speaker 1: the offensive line is in the midst of this restructure here.
- 45:44Speaker 1: Lane Johnson retired midseason, as you mentioned earlier. Cam Juergens
- 45:48Speaker 1: was traded down to our third string center on this team.
- 45:53Speaker 1: So I guess a two part question here, Lou, is
- 45:56Speaker 1: how much of the offensive line issues are actually because.
- 46:00Speaker 2: Jeff Stoutland is no longer the O-line coach?
- 46:03Speaker 1: And what's the level of pain that we may actually
- 46:06Speaker 1: be feeling with this rebuild of this offensive line this
- 46:10Speaker 1: season and into the foreseeable future? So I guess let's
- 46:13Speaker 1: start off with the Stoutland University part of this.
- 46:17Speaker 2: I mean, is that a big issue here that we're
- 46:19Speaker 2: not really talking about too much?
- 46:21Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it's definitely a part of it. Jeff
- 46:23Speaker 5: Stoutland is maybe... He's one of the greatest offensive line
- 46:25Speaker 5: coaches in the history of football. And you look at
- 46:28Speaker 5: not just his scheme, which really always worked for this
- 46:31Speaker 5: football team, running the ball, throwing the ball, but also
- 46:34Speaker 5: just his hands-on development of talent.
- 46:36Speaker 4: I thought you saw.
- 46:38Speaker 5: every time the Eagles brought in a raw offensive lineman,
- 46:40Speaker 5: it felt like Stalin got the most out of them.
- 46:42Speaker 5: I mean, obviously Jordan, my, a lot is the story
- 46:44Speaker 5: that we'll always talk about, but even look at McKay
- 46:46Speaker 5: Beckton in 2024, he was a bust of a tackle
- 46:50Speaker 5: with the jets, a first round pick. And then Stalin
- 46:53Speaker 5: gets his hands on him, plays him at guard and
- 46:55Speaker 5: Beckton has a career year in 2024. So I think
- 46:58Speaker 5: you're missing that part more than anything is the hands-on
- 47:01Speaker 5: development of talent. And you especially need that right now
- 47:04Speaker 5: when your depth is being tested, like when you don't
- 47:07Speaker 5: have Lane Johnson anymore, when you, and I thought Markel
- 47:09Speaker 5: Bell was solid last week, but when you don't have
- 47:12Speaker 5: a healthy Landon Dickerson and now Cam Juergens is gone
- 47:15Speaker 5: and there's a lot of young pieces here up front
- 47:17Speaker 5: and a lot of moving pieces.
- 47:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 47:19Speaker 5: Having that kind of mastermind coach at offensive line would
- 47:23Speaker 5: really help, but I don't think that's the main reason
- 47:26Speaker 5: because last year with Stoutland, this offensive line was still
- 47:28Speaker 5: in shambles. I just think, cam jurgens and landon dickerson
- 47:32Speaker 5: i don't know if it's because of the injuries they
- 47:34Speaker 5: played through they sacrificed for that super bowl run but
- 47:37Speaker 5: they just haven't been the same and lane johnson retired
- 47:40Speaker 5: right and tyler steen is not who mckay beckton was
- 47:43Speaker 5: so it was just kind of a group effort of
- 47:45Speaker 5: this whole unit collapsing and now for the first time
- 47:47Speaker 5: it feels like in howie roseman's career he's gonna have
- 47:50Speaker 5: to replace the majority of starters on the offensive line
- 47:53Speaker 5: yeah in the next season or two and That's kind
- 47:56Speaker 5: of a new, you know, for the NFL, that's not rare.
- 47:59Speaker 2: It's a new feeling for us.
- 48:01Speaker 5: The Eagles have been spoiled the entire 21st century.
- 48:04Speaker 3: Yes.
- 48:04Speaker 5: I mean, even look at left tackle. They go from
- 48:06Speaker 5: Trey Thomas to Jason Peters.
- 48:08Speaker 3: Yeah. Right.
- 48:08Speaker 5: To Jordan, my Alana, the kind of harmony they've had
- 48:10Speaker 5: in the trenches is very rare. And it feels like
- 48:13Speaker 5: for the first time in like 26 years. they really
- 48:16Speaker 5: have to completely rebuild this thing from the ground up.
- 48:19Speaker 5: Hopefully a, a drew Kendall, a Markel bell show. They
- 48:23Speaker 5: can be long-term pieces, but they're going to have to
- 48:26Speaker 5: replace at least two, maybe three starters up front the
- 48:29Speaker 5: next couple of years. And that's, that's one of the
- 48:31Speaker 5: biggest reasons if this Eagles era kind of falls off,
- 48:34Speaker 5: if you will, that'll be maybe the biggest reason is
- 48:37Speaker 5: it was kind of an offensive line led golden era.
- 48:40Speaker 5: And now that's, that's changing.
- 48:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:43Speaker 1: The success that this team has had has been because
- 48:45Speaker 1: of the trenches and specifically on the offensive line for sure.
- 48:49Speaker 1: And look, I want to transition now over to the defense.
- 48:53Speaker 1: Defense played really well this past week. I mean, they
- 48:56Speaker 1: were the bright spot. against that Jaguars offense, a very
- 49:01Speaker 1: high-powered offense. This is a unit that has been up
- 49:04Speaker 1: and down for sure throughout this season. And another two-part
- 49:07Speaker 1: question here for you, Lou. I want to talk about
- 49:10Speaker 1: what the biggest strength you think is on this defense
- 49:13Speaker 1: and also the biggest weakness on the defense as well. Because, again,
- 49:16Speaker 1: we're seeing some ups and downs. And, again, they really
- 49:19Speaker 1: took care of a lot of business. in terms of
- 49:21Speaker 1: the Jacksonville Jaguars a high-powered offense here let's talk about
- 49:24Speaker 1: the biggest strength on this defense because I I I
- 49:29Speaker 1: I I think it's Jalen Carter I think it is
- 49:31Speaker 1: yeah you know it was last week yeah what are
- 49:34Speaker 1: your thoughts here let's start with the biggest strength here.
- 49:36Speaker 4: I still think it's the past coverage.
- 49:38Speaker 5: I think when you're on Mitchell and Rick Wolin, and
- 49:39Speaker 5: if you look at the advanced analytics, they've been to,
- 49:42Speaker 5: and I know Wolin from time to time, we'll give
- 49:43Speaker 5: up an explosive play. He was in coverage on that.
- 49:46Speaker 5: I think it was more about the one handed catch,
- 49:47Speaker 5: but you know, he was right there, but yeah, the
- 49:49Speaker 5: touchdown of Parker Washington, we'll instill up and down, but
- 49:52Speaker 5: he's had a really good year. All things considered as
- 49:54Speaker 5: your third corner, Quinn, John Mitchell has been a first
- 49:57Speaker 5: team all pro again, finally got a pick in the
- 49:59Speaker 5: regular season last week. That was great to see. And
- 50:01Speaker 5: Cooper Jean has really bounced back these last two games.
- 50:04Speaker 5: I thought he was great. against the Rams and the Jaguars.
- 50:07Speaker 5: So I still think that's their identity on defense, but yeah,
- 50:11Speaker 5: if you get that world breaking version of Jalen Carter,
- 50:14Speaker 5: you got on Sunday, I still believe, even if this
- 50:16Speaker 5: offense continues to not have answers in the second half,
- 50:19Speaker 5: they're in a position to win these games. Still like
- 50:22Speaker 5: they're only a couple of plays away and they have
- 50:24Speaker 5: no right being nearly four and one, but they're almost
- 50:27Speaker 5: four and one instead of two and three. And in
- 50:29Speaker 5: a bad NFC East, as long as you have this defense,
- 50:32Speaker 5: which now the four man pass rush is getting going
- 50:34Speaker 5: and I think they're still going to have a chance.
- 50:36Speaker 5: So they have a lot of strengths on defense. I
- 50:38Speaker 5: still believe they're a pass coverage first kind of unit,
- 50:42Speaker 5: but now the four-man rush is getting there. And if
- 50:44Speaker 5: those things start to marry together, you're going to get
- 50:46Speaker 5: that 2025 version of the defense that was able to
- 50:48Speaker 5: drag this dead offense to 11 wins in a division title.
- 50:52Speaker 2: All right, let's flip the coin. What's the biggest weakness
- 50:54Speaker 2: on this team here, buddy?
- 50:55Speaker 5: I think the weakness right now is still probably that
- 50:59Speaker 5: second linebacker spot, Jihad Campbell. And I still believe in
- 51:01Speaker 5: him long-term. I still think he's a raw player that
- 51:05Speaker 5: was dealing with an injury too. I don't know if
- 51:07Speaker 5: he's at a hundred percent.
- 51:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 51:08Speaker 4: I still think he's a high ceiling and I wouldn't
- 51:10Speaker 4: give up on him.
- 51:11Speaker 2: His coverage is horrendous. Oh my gosh.
- 51:13Speaker 4: It's crazy. The drop off.
- 51:14Speaker 5: He was one of the, when you look at the
- 51:16Speaker 5: advanced analytics from the first half of last year, Jihad
- 51:19Speaker 5: Campbell was one of the best coverage linebackers in football.
- 51:21Speaker 5: And this year it's just, it's not working for him.
- 51:24Speaker 5: And I think he's struggling to get off blocks in
- 51:27Speaker 5: when it comes to misdirection, play action, his eyes, it
- 51:30Speaker 5: just doesn't look like they're always in the right place.
- 51:32Speaker 5: And Vic Fangio said in his press conference yesterday that
- 51:35Speaker 5: Trotter Jr. was supposed to rotate in if he didn't
- 51:37Speaker 5: get kicked out of that game. And I imagine that'll
- 51:40Speaker 5: be the plan against Carolina. So figuring out that linebacker
- 51:43Speaker 5: spot next to Zach Bond, the edge rushers could be
- 51:46Speaker 5: better too. I think they need to be more consistent.
- 51:48Speaker 5: But I think the weakness, if you had to pinpoint one,
- 51:51Speaker 5: I think is still on that second level. They're still
- 51:53Speaker 5: getting some inconsistent play from their linebacker is more so
- 51:56Speaker 5: Campbell than I thought blonde was great last week. So
- 51:59Speaker 5: I would say it's unfortunately Jihad Campbell.
- 52:01Speaker 4: All right.
- 52:02Speaker 1: Well, Lou, before I let you go, and I guess
- 52:04Speaker 1: it's a theme and storyline and discussion point that we're
- 52:08Speaker 1: all going to be talking about within the future. Lots
- 52:11Speaker 1: of folks talking about the need to get rid of
- 52:13Speaker 1: Nick Sirianni and Sean Mannion at this point due to
- 52:16Speaker 1: the massive offensive and overall team failures up until a
- 52:20Speaker 1: week five years, we're looking at.
- 52:22Speaker 2: Week six, but Let's play devil's advocate here for the
- 52:26Speaker 2: sake of it.
- 52:26Speaker 1: While it is a win-now, quote, win-now league, and that's
- 52:30Speaker 1: what fans want, this is an Eagles organization and coaching
- 52:35Speaker 1: staff that has been to the playoffs every year since
- 52:37Speaker 1: Sirianni took over as head coach.
- 52:39Speaker 2: That is a reality.
- 52:41Speaker 1: They've been to two Super Bowls, won one of them,
- 52:44Speaker 1: another reality. There's definitely something to be said for that
- 52:48Speaker 1: at the end of the day, in my opinion. I
- 52:51Speaker 1: am not happy with where the offensive coaching is certainly
- 52:54Speaker 1: at this point. So what do you think about this
- 52:57Speaker 1: storyline as we are moving forward? Does Nick Sirianni deserve
- 53:01Speaker 1: some grace or is it all about, you know, show
- 53:04Speaker 1: me what you've got right now? What are your thoughts here?
- 53:08Speaker 5: It's an interesting situation to be in. If you're Howie
- 53:10Speaker 5: Roseman and Jeffrey Lurie, because you've kind of gone through
- 53:12Speaker 5: this before. So you kind of know what it looks
- 53:15Speaker 5: like when a team is just done. If a coach
- 53:17Speaker 5: just doesn't have the answers anymore, You look at Doug
- 53:20Speaker 5: Peterson after 2017, right? They win a playoff game in 2018.
- 53:23Speaker 5: They win the division again in 2019. But you could
- 53:26Speaker 5: see the offense was going down, right? And I think
- 53:29Speaker 5: a lot of that was the roster wasn't as good.
- 53:30Speaker 5: There were injuries. But the coaching was still a problem.
- 53:34Speaker 5: And then in 2020, they fired him. With Nick Sirianni,
- 53:37Speaker 5: it's different, right? I mean, he's won a Super Bowl
- 53:39Speaker 5: and he's been to two. But I think, again, their
- 53:43Speaker 5: leash is normally pretty tight with offensive football.
- 53:45Speaker 4: If it's this inept.
- 53:47Speaker 5: And this was never a problem this bad of a
- 53:49Speaker 5: second half offense with Doug Peterson. So if they continue
- 53:53Speaker 5: this for another year, even if they win a bad division,
- 53:56Speaker 5: but they lose in the first or second round.
- 53:58Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 53:58Speaker 5: I think what they did with Doug Peterson almost confirms
- 54:02Speaker 5: to them they made the right decision moving on because
- 54:04Speaker 5: it worked.
- 54:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 54:05Speaker 4: And I think they would bring in.
- 54:07Speaker 5: I think they'll see the inherent flaw of this organization
- 54:11Speaker 5: that as long as Nick is the head coach, we're
- 54:13Speaker 5: always going to have this inconsistency with the offense.
- 54:16Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 54:17Speaker 5: I mean, I don't I don't know if there's a
- 54:18Speaker 5: way to save his job, maybe how he justifies it.
- 54:21Speaker 5: It's easier to just rebuild the offense like I've done
- 54:23Speaker 5: it before. I can do it again. And Jalen and
- 54:26Speaker 5: Nick with the right pieces can get it done. But
- 54:28Speaker 5: I just think you're always going to have to make
- 54:30Speaker 5: up for the weaknesses of this coach.
- 54:32Speaker 1: And so because we've never seen this in the second half,
- 54:35Speaker 1: like we've said, that's what I mean. Never seen it
- 54:37Speaker 1: in the second half. And I don't know if you've
- 54:38Speaker 1: ever seen this.
- 54:39Speaker 4: It's the extreme of it.
- 54:41Speaker 5: If they were like a middle tier off because the
- 54:42Speaker 5: 2018 and 2019 offenses, they were very inconsistent, but you
- 54:46Speaker 5: still had some high highs. Like they didn't just disappear
- 54:49Speaker 5: for an entire half every single week. It's the extreme
- 54:53Speaker 5: uniqueness of this situation that makes, even with Nick Sirianni's
- 54:57Speaker 5: resume and the style of coach he is, he's not
- 55:01Speaker 5: helping the situation. That to me is what puts his
- 55:04Speaker 5: job in jeopardy. So yeah, I mean, I would love
- 55:07Speaker 5: to say that, I'm going to stand here and defend
- 55:09Speaker 5: him and say he should be the coach next year.
- 55:11Speaker 4: But yeah, I don't know.
- 55:13Speaker 5: I just prefer to have a play calling head coach
- 55:16Speaker 5: to help solve this issue. I just think this is
- 55:18Speaker 5: a really tough product of football to watch every single week.
- 55:21Speaker 5: We've been doing it almost for a year and a
- 55:23Speaker 5: half now.
- 55:23Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely. Great way to end this discussion.
- 55:27Speaker 1: He is Lou DiBiase from the Locked on Eagles podcast.
- 55:30Speaker 1: My friend, always great talking with you. Thank you so
- 55:33Speaker 1: very much for taking the time to jump on here.
- 55:35Speaker 1: Let's talk again in the future.
- 55:36Speaker 2: I'd love to do it.
- 55:37Speaker 4: Yeah, you too, man.
- 55:37Speaker 5: Hopefully next time we're talking, the offense scores some points
- 55:41Speaker 5: in the second half of a game.
- 55:44Speaker 1: And that's going to do it for us this week.
