- 0:00SPEAKER_01: Yo, what's cracking folks?
- 0:01SPEAKER_01: Uh we're uh podcasting, and uh in in today's lovely episode, we are gonna be talking about uh bad jobs, so for a variety of reasons.
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: And uh Josh and I have had uh quite a number of them.
- 0:17SPEAKER_01: We usually get uh at least I don't know, a couple stinkers a year.
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: I feel like our batting average has gone gone up like it's better.
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, the the the older and wiser we get to kind of vet some of these out.
- 0:31SPEAKER_01: So uh you had one that uh it was top of mind, so I'll let you lead off with yours and then I'll I'll I'll uh I'll come in with my thoughts.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there was well, there's a a bunch of them, but one of them was this one we barely had any interaction with the client, but we we typically do interior work, so we're working with the client, we're always asking, like, where do we put our stuff, where do we use the restroom, all that kind of stuff.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: So it's a lot of personal interaction.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: So this was a job in a very nice neighborhood.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Didn't know the client really well, but it was like a recommendation through a builder.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: This was years ago, and they they just treated us like the help, and we were doing outside work, so it was like, oh yeah, yeah, just paint this, this, and this.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: And then they just left.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: The problem was it was Monday, and usually on Sunday night, if I'm ever uh my diet goes astray, where I eat like I don't I don't do alcohol really, but it's more of candy and sweets where I pound like gummy bears and Skittles and all that nasty stuff.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: So like I really had to go, number two, and then I was like, dude, and like it was this was like I think we had the we we drove in the same truck, and I don't even know if I had a smartphone back then, and I was like, I gotta go.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: And like I was like knocking on their door, no one answered.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to find like a I'm like jiggling all their doors, I'm like, open, open, open, and like it was luckily it was a like a bigger property.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: So uh I was like, oh man, I gotta go.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: So I went in my truck and I was like, I'm not gonna make it if I try to because we we were like far like 10 minutes away from anything, yeah, a McDonald's or whatever.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: And so I was like, dude, uh so I'm panicking, and then I find this big wood pile in their back of their wood pile story.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: The huge deuce behind their wood pile.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Like, I really hope they don't go back here because oh, it was so embarrassing, but I had to go so bad.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: Did you poop in a trash bag or did you just poop and bury it?
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Oh, I don't even know.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: It was a little scarring.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: I was just like, I'm so vulnerable back there because it was like in a neighborhood, and then but like lucky there's enough trees.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Like, dude, I don't even care.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: They can arrest me.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: I'm like, I gotta go.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: I think I stood lookout and you just Yeah, yeah.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Don't look back here.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: I said you're like Josh looking like a dog who was embarrassed, like it's just just the top of his head was picking up and go to the wheel.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: I was peeking around because I was like, well, if they make pulling the driveway, I gotta like like somehow stop this.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: But oh no, I was just uh rinsing a brush out back here.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: But man, it was it was better after that, but oh man, that was embarrassing.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: But it was it was more of they treated us just like the help of like we're not gonna even talk to you and just invoice us when you're done.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Like we never went inside, we were never allowed inside, and that was very rare for how someone would treat us, but they treat us like the outside help that doesn't come inside.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and we're we're uh yeah, generally we're that that's unusual for us.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: We're very you know affable and one or two times that's ever happened to us.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I do remember that one.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: I I don't remember really remember what we painted, but I just remember it was like not even on the table that you could set foot in the house.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: And you're like, Yeah, hey, we're actually like interior painters, so like that's just need a restroom, man.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Come on.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's just like basic stuff.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: Refill your water.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just something like that.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there was there was none of that.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was a good one.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: I remember not feeling bad at all that you poop behind the wood pile because I was like, these people are tools.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: Like, don't come back here.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I hope I hope later in the winter when they go out to the wood pile to like fire up their like wood-fired whatever.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: Did that dog eat Skittles in the barber?
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: It's like, what are these bright crawlers?
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: What's in here?
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: It's like, oh, is this even a thing?
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: It's a rough night.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he really got after it.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's that's never fun when you don't have access to the the amenities.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: You know, we're not we're not uh yeah, we're not too too uh persnickety about stuff, but a bathroom is is nice.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: Just a bathroom.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: Now, do you have one that's at the top of mind?
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: Man, I was thinking about it last night and just like jobs that I like one ones so we've had stuff like go wrong where we've had like accidents and stuff.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: Uh and then there's jobs that just stuck with me from like the brute force of the the I So the one the one that I have, and I'll I'll be I'll be vague, but uh so basically when uh we did the handoff where I was running the commercial account and then you took it back over because you thought like uh I was this is a side tangent, but we were getting a lot of guff from our commercial account where like they were flagging all of our units and like they would literally circle stuff on the walls and Sharpie and like pen and stuff to wasn't going as smooth, yeah.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: So I was like, dude.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: So I transitioned back to managing that account and then you went to do another account.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: And I took on a huge exterior, uh, and I was basically heading that up, and it was we were working behind a renovator that we've worked behind before.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: It was like I was in like my early 20s, I really had not a lot of experience running jobs of that size, and we had a kid working with us that summer, a college kid, and he was really good, so like he was like super fast, and we were doing a big exterior, and they were working on it, so we were like basically hand brushing siding and stuff, and it's like we you know probably should have been spraying maybe, but like that the but there was so much going on in the house, and we had this huge like 60-foot boom lift we had delivered, and just like everything about that job, like something happened where it just drug it drug on forever.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: Uh, and I remember when the guy delivered the lift, it's like all this whole old crust ball in his truck, and he goes, He drops it off, he's like, Yeah, man, it's like uh should be careful on these things.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: I was like, Oh, it was like, Yeah, dude died on this thing last week.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: I was like, What?
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: And he I was like, What happened?
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: He's like, Well, he had it boomed up like 40 feet, all the way extended out.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: He's like, and then he drove it off a big curb and then it catapulted him out of the lift, and then he just died.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: Like he just landed on the ground.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: I was like, Oh, cool, all right.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: Well, uh, yeah.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: So then we, you know, were painting, and then that was one where you were you were scurrying around our commercial account, and we were bringing in guys.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: We just had a ton of guys coming in, and then you sent me this one dude, and uh he's like, You're like, Yeah, this guy's good, and he was like a retired police chief, and he was like he was in his 50s, maybe, yeah, maybe early 60s, yeah, and just like a Philly, you know, he looks like a cartoon rendition of a police chief.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: Big talkative guy, walrus mustache, talkative dude, and then I put him on this back deck, and this house is it's extremely nice house.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: It was one of the nicest homes I'd worked on up until that point, and they had a new addition on the back where they had like a thousand windows installed, uh, and the the windows had rubber coping on the out even on the outside of the house, they had rubber coping around, and uh, and so then I set this dude up, and you had worked him at our commercial account, we're like, Yeah, he's decent, like he did fine on this, and I was like, Alright, cool.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: And then you think, you know, I was still like a kid, and you just think like, okay, this guy's like an asset.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: He's an adult, he's gonna do a good job, he's gonna do a good job, it's gonna be fine.
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: And then I set him up, I gave him the paint, I was like, here's what you're doing.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: He was painting all the windows and doors on that the back uh uh deck area, and it is like more technical work, but I just like it's trimmed, so you can paint it, you just paint it.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then I scurried up uh with my buddy Tim back up in the boom lift and was like, you know, up three stories painting whatever, and uh, and then the interior, because there was an interior crew painting the inside of the house, and he comes out and he's like, It's never good when another like contractor is talking to you about work you you should be doing.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: And he's like, hey man, I was like, what's up?
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: Uh and he goes, You might want to check on your boy on that deck, and I was like, Alright.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: I was like, that's not good.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: So I like boomed all the way down.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: I go around, and then uh this dude, it was like my jaw dropped.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: Like I I it was the fury building in me was like I couldn't believe what I was seeing, and I hadn't left him alone that long.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: I maybe was gone for 90 minutes because I like you're boo you're boomed up.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: Like I'm not trying to come up and down a bunch.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: So uh and um he dude first first off, he had paint uh all the way up to his wrist.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: Like the hand it looked like he dunked his hand in the paint pot and his brush was completely covered, bristles to the the the back of the handle all the way, and there was drips all over the deck, and I was like, Oh, and then he had gotten uh paint all over the rubber coping on the outside of the windows, and I was like, yo, what's going on?
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: He's like, Oh yeah, man, I was kind of trained like old school Philly style, we'll just like wipe it off later, and I was like, No.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: I was like, dude, you need to stop right now, and I'm like, and you're done for the day.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: I was like, it was weird to like kick a grown ass man where I still felt like a kid, and I was like, I the the physical violence I wanted to rain upon this dude, I j I was like, dude, you gotta just get you're done for that.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: And then he was like trying to be like, oh I'm sorry, I can I'm like, dude, just get out, like get out, and then we had to come back, and it was me, you, and another one of our buddies came and spent like an entire Saturday just using like solvents to get it off the rubber and get and even the not only did he get paint on everything, but his actual paint work was shit.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: Like it was this brush was crap, like it wasn't even close.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: It was as it was as poorly of a job you could do in the time that he spent out there and wrecked like the most because like the stuff that he messed up in such a short amount of time took forever to fix.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: Uh three of us a whole day.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so it was just to fix it.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't even think we painted it.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: I think we just got all the painting.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: All we did was fix, it was just scrubbing stuff.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: What it was you called me, you're like, dude, this guy, what are you doing sending him to me?
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: I'm like, man, I had him paint a bunch of doors at the unit, seemed to be fine.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: He got along.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: I looked at him, they're fine.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: It's like I'm sorry, man.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: I'm so sorry.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so that that job just had a lot of uh pieces to it where I was, you know, you get you have to get experience somehow, but it was we were there forever.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: I remember me and Tim like set up a little grill, like a hibachi grill behind a bush, and we would like because we were there so much, like late in the and the family was gone a lot, so we would just like cook hot dogs and stuff, and then like get back up on the lift and try and you know, paint stuff.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: We had a bat flew out of a dormer into into Tim, and we had to like knock it down with a paint pole and all that stuff, and yeah, it was it was just a so many, you know, not fun experiences on it.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: Just I think those jobs too can drain your spirit because you show up day after day and you don't feel like you're making any progress.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: Uh and then they kept adding things, so it's just it was like the the never-ending jobs tend to mess because I just want to like close it so we can move on to the next thing, especially when you have a bunch of other pressure in your schedule and you're trying to get to it.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: So that was that was one that that uh percolated uh in my mind as I was thinking of like worst jobs ever.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, man.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I remember that one.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: Well, we had a lot that was probably the most intense schedule we ever had.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: We had everything going at once.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and we had a lot of guys out working.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we hired that's when I hired, like, we had up to like 12 dudes working, and it was just I almost ran out of money.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: They all want to get paid, and our clients weren't paying us.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, if guys work for you, they really want to get money.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: So quickly.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: Quickly.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: Well, and then our commercial account had a huge lag, and when we invoice stuff, they went from 30 days to 60 past 60, and I had to threaten to take all of our guys off if we didn't get paid because I didn't I didn't have the money to actually pay.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: Like they went in the accounts.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: It's like, uh alright, guys, I'll get you paid later.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: All right, just hang in there, keep working, please.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're doing you're doing good.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: Doing good.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: You know, checks in the mail.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're good.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: Everything's fine.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: We totally know what we're doing.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: And then we're like, uh yeah, most of you aren't coming back.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: So that's uh this this blows.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: So, because we want to, you know, yeah, that was not not a fun time.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: So what do you have another one that you're uh Yeah?
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: I had a uh I think I was it was like a it was a summer I graduated, I was just started the paint business, but I was like my first full summer doing it, or maybe second summer, right after I graduated college.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: And I quoted this job, and it was a wallpaper job over in like Glenside or Jenkintown, old house, and I've never really taken down wallpaper before.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: And like I remember I would go and it was like all these rooms, and it was an old, old house.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: I said, All right, probably one day to take down the wallpaper, one day to paint the walls, and one day to do it was like three or four days to paint these rooms each.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: And like I my my charge rate was super low, and I was just like, Yeah, this is great.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: I got like a four thousand dollar job booked because I looked, it was like four or five rooms.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: And as soon as I get there and start tearing paper off, I'm like, oh no.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: It was like one inch by two inch sections coming off, plaster underneath, and it just like a snail's pace.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: And I'm trying to do call people, like, what do I how do you get wallpaper off?
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: What do you do?
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: And what is this?
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: And I think instead of taking one day to remove wallpaper, it would take three.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: So everything took about triple of what it took.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I would kind of do like a section or two, get killed on price, and but then I was committed to the next one, so I kept going.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: And I remember that was the one where I was working by myself, and a few things happened on this job.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: One, I got accused of breaking something that I didn't break.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: Oh, was this the one with the puppy?
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so he had a dog, and this dog was crazy.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: It was like running around.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: The guy was gone all day, and so you were working with me, and then we were boom, crash.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, what happened?
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: And the dog went up in this big window sill that was huge, and then fell out onto the stairs, and then broke the balusters on the railing.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it went through the spindles.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: And with the spindles.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: And then I let him know.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: I think I left them a note because I don't know if I had like it's I didn't, I probably should have called him.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: I was like, hey, so then he let he calls me back.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: He's like, yo, you guys broke this.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: I'm like, Whoa, it wasn't us, it was your dog.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: He's like, Well, I don't see how the dog could do that.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: So I had to tell him, like, yo, man, like if I broke it, I would let you know.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but you're right now accusing me of being a liar, and one thing I don't stand for, like, I look, look, I'm not gonna lie about this.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: If you're gonna call me a liar, I'm not coming back.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: And I was like, I was 23 at the time, so I thought that was pretty good.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: And then he had this crazy story.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: He's like, Oh, you know what?
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: Looking at it, he's like, I could see how the dog could come up, do a loop-de-loop, and like had this huge thing instead of the dog getting on the stoop, falling down.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Like, look, Jeremy heard it, I was there, we were upstairs in the room, we heard the crash.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and so anyway, I got my revenge later, where he remembered this like down there, they hit this like old school cuckoo clock, and like in the foyer, and I pulled down the paper, and then I took the clock off because I had to paint it.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: And the thing was there was this like wire sticking out, and I was trying to move it.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: It was like the the went into the cuckoo clock.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: I don't know, I had a wire for some reason.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: I don't know if it's like an electric thing, and then I just touched it and it went and it shot right into the wall.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: I'm like, oh no.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: Yep, and then he came back, and then he was like, What happened?
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: I was like, uh, I just took the clock off and then I hit uh the wire, and he somehow like I don't know what this cuckoo clock meant to him.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: He went like, no, no, no, like in front of me, a grown 40-something-year-old man.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: Like this cuckoo clock was everything to him.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: I was like, Oh, I'm sorry.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: Uh I'll find it.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: And like I'll find I was trying to find the wire.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: And I didn't know like the wire went up or down, so I just started bashing holes in the wall.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: So I took a hammer, I went like two feet down from the hole.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: I'm like, bam! You just shine your flames lit in there.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: So I went two more feet down, bam.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: I think I can root it out with a stick.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I kept going.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: So there was like four holes going down, and I'm just looking at like I've made no money at this job.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: I could have worked at like Wendy's and made way more money.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: I was just like, I think I almost broke down and cried.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: I was like, dude, this is horrible.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: What am I doing with my life?
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: What's going on here?
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, this is horrid.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: And I don't even think I found it.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: Oh, for sure you didn't.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: No, it just got I think it sucked up into the ceiling or wherever it went.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: I think it was like for the doorbell or something.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was for the doorbell.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: You're right.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: It was for some like doorbell.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: Right next to the cuckoo clock.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it was like an old, really old house that was like it needed a ton of work.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: And uh, yeah, because there was this door that makes more sense.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: There would be a wire to the doorbell, but he was freaking out.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because it because I remember it sucked down into the wall, yeah.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: And they were like, we're not finding it.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: That's that's gone.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: And then he I think he was really upset about that.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and then like everything, so I had like two more rooms to paint, and luckily I was painting it, and then I brought in somebody to help.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: They screwed it up, they got painted in the wrong spot.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: I had he's asking for a discount because I messed this stuff up, and I'm like, dude, like I'm taking like he got the best deal, and it looked good when we were all done.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: But like I had my friends help him.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: He's like, dude, my one friend, you know, Matt, he's like, he worked with me.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: He's like, dude, I'll work for you for free to help you get through this.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: Because he he was just hanging out at our house, we're gonna go on vacation.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: And I was like, sweet.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: So he gave me a free day of labor to remove wallpaper.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: So anyway, we finally finished.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: It was like the most horrid job, and I had I got a call from our commercial account who was newer.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: They're like, Hey Josh, I got this four unit to paint, or like a this unit, and it pretty much that unit was the same price of the whole job that I did that took me like a month to do, and I could get done in a week.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: So I was like, Oh, thank God.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: And so I taught I had one more room to do, and I sat down with the client, like, hey man, listen, you got a great deal.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: I can't afford to be here anymore.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: I think it's best we part ways.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: And then what happened?
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: The guy took forever to pay me.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: Oh I had to chase that money down.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: It wasn't even that much money for what he had done.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: It was the best deal of a lifetime.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: And it took him, I had to threaten small court, uh like to a small claims court, like like, dude, where's the money?
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: And it was, it was just it would never end.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: I thought it was like because the problem is you think you close the ticket, it's a month later, you haven't gotten paid.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: It was like two months took him to pay me.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's insane.
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it drove me crazy.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: But luckily, especially for like that when you're like, I'm getting that money.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: I was like, nah, I'm getting that money, bro.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: I will drive to that house and pick it up.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: Like, what do you want me to do?
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: I think I said, Hey, I will pick it up the check right now.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: It's like, okay, it's in the mail.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: Then it never came, and then one of those.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's in the mail.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: That's a good one.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: That one drove me crazy.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: Uh so I have uh uh one similar to that as far as like me completely misquoting something and being like uh optimistic.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: Now, I will say, in my defense, I had never done this type of job before.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: So I had done like little things where I felt somewhat confident that I could do uh the the work that I'm about to describe, but it was my first staircase that I ever stained, and uh it's it's a brand new like raw wood staircase, probably like 13 treads and risers and all of that, and I had to stain handrails, nool posts, and then I think the spindles were painted.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: Um, and uh so a really good company that we work behind installed, did the install, everything looked great, and then uh you know I came in and so I'd I'd done staining and polying and stuff before.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: Uh so because we'd been uh I was probably in like my mid-20s.
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: Had a few years under my belt of like actually being out on our own.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: And then I think I quoted this full staircase, which I so the scope of the work is I had to uh stain all of the treads and risers and then do th like three coats of polyurethane, and then same for the handrails.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: Also, all the woodwork was getting stained and polied, and then I think I had to like paint the like stringers, skirt boards, whatever, and then paint the spindles.
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: That's stuff I was like pretty like confident with.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: Uh so then I like I think my qu I still remember my quote was nine hundred and I think it was nine hundred and ninety dollars, and I thought I was like, yeah, like and I don't know the math in my head of like yeah, so I'll do this, I'll do that, I yeah, do that like one day to do that, and like the poly's not gonna do it.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: So just like I think it was more of like it'll take two hours to do quote one, two hours to quote two, but you're taking six trips.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: So I drove over to Place and then you know I do I prep it out, you know, I wipe everything down with uh mineral spirits, and then I lay down the first coat of uh stain on the on the treads.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: And uh as I'm laying it down, like these little paw prints appear all the way down the steps.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: Like the first one was kind of faint, and then they got more pronounced as I went down, and I was like, what the hell's going on?
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: Like this is this is like not great.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: Like what like that that's what is what is happening?
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: And I was like, okay, maybe maybe if I put a coat of polyurethane over top of it, you won't be able to see it.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: And that was that was wildly incorrect.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: So I did that, and then I was just like, dude, what the hell's going on?
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: And then I called around, I talked to this old crustball guy that had a lot of experience with like stain and stuff, and he's just like, Okay, you're gonna have to sand down like some some ant, like a cat or whatever, probably got on those with like wet paws or something like that, and their oil got into the wood.
- 23:07SPEAKER_01: You're gonna need to sand down that stuff like past where that oil penetrated.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: And so now I've got to sand through not only the stain, but all of the poly I put on top, which was just like one coat.
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: Uh, but then I like I s and I just had to hand sand it so we didn't have like fez tools or any of that stuff, and I don't even know if I could have sanded the way that I needed to with the like the fezz tool, because I didn't need to sand down the entire tread, just the areas where the okay paw prints showed up, but also you have to do it enough so you can get a uniform-looking yeah finish on it.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: So I ended up sanding down like almost all of the treads, like almost all of them, and uh and then I'm way over time, like I'm way over.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: It was supposed to be like, oh, Jeremy's gonna be gone for a few mornings to knock this out, and I just it just kept going.
- 23:57SPEAKER_01: And then uh so I've I finally I got it down, I restained, I did all the stuff, and then uh but that just that like ate up like well over a day's of day's worth of labor, just like sanding it back and then figuring out what the hell's going on.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: Uh and I made I I made like I don't know like a dollar an hour on that.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: It was so bad.
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: Like I just uh and then and this was early on where like most of my stain work had been uh like trim and like handrails and stuff, so not stuff you're gonna walk on.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: And so I used to do finish wax on all of the like handrails and stuff, so because it feels nice and smooth when you run your hand over.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: Well, I finished wax the treads, and like, dude, I got them like glassy smooth, uh, and then they were like buffed, and and then I was like, I had to tell the homeowners which were like that they were a little bit bigger, and I was like, because I I was I was doing it in sock feet, like after I got the first coat of poly on, and uh, and then I had like waxed it because I was going up and down sock feet, and then I actually like slipped, you know, you catch a heel and like went down, and I was like, oh dude, this is real sketchy.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: And I just told him I was like, hey, don't walk on these in sock feet, like just make sure if you go up and down for a little while, go in like bare feet so it actually grips.
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: Uh so I had to tell him, I was like, Oh, you're not supposed to do the tri it's like when I used to like detail vehicles, you like armor all the steering wheel and then they can't turn it.
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: So so and then I I uh and I figured out they had two kittens and they would bathe them upstairs in the bathtub, and then these little kittens would come and sit on the raw wood that's like unfinished, and they didn't put um like I think they remove the ram's board.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: So usually when you if if you guys ever do like a a new staircase install, like usually the carpenters or whoever does the stairs will put like ram's board on each tread to protect the tread from exactly what I just described or something similar.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: Because you just don't want dirt or oils or anything to penetrate this the wood, so then when you go to stain it, something shows up that uh you know you wouldn't otherwise have seen.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: And uh basically with uh cats' paws, when they uh they get wetter even if they're not wet, but particularly when they're wet, they have like oils in their fur and in their skin, and that's what penetrated each tread and why it looked like I had like you know kitty soft paws all up and down.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: It did look good when it was all done.
- 26:39SPEAKER_01: We got there in the end.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: So but now you're quite good at those.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, and then also you you can kind of like it uh lessons learned from that is is one, just to like if when you lay down mineral spirits to like clear the or like clean the steps or whatever conditioner you're using, when the steps get wet, you can kind of get a preview of what it's gonna look like when it's stained.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: If something looks weird then figure that out.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: And then if you apply stain, it is not gonna look any better when you poly it.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: So like figure it out when you're in that stage.
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: So I've had I haven't had anything quite like that uh in in any of the other stair stuff I did.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: The only other one I've had that was similar is like they the uh one time the carpenters had the uh uh Rams board upside down.
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: I think a new guy put it down.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: You know, Rams board's got the ink on the side, yeah.
- 27:31SPEAKER_01: So they had the side that says Rams board down on that, and then they were walking on it, and then the the ink on the cardboard imprinted into the steps.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: Uh it's actually in the staircase video I did.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 27:44SPEAKER_01: I pulled that off, and then you but that one was less of a big deal because you could visually see it, so I just sanded it all down before I applied any stain.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: But yeah, my uh even if everything had gone perfectly, that price was so crazy.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: Uh they got it, they got an amazing deal, and that's not what I charge for that work anymore, for sure.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: So yeah, we wouldn't be in business.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: It was not good.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: So that and those were the ones too where it was like, you know, it was like 30 minutes to that job every time, and then you're like doing it alone and you're working on their stairs, so they're inconvenienced and like all of these things where you're just trying to close, especially when I I always feel bad when I'm like it's gonna take X amount of days, and then it's like you're way beyond that.
- 28:28SPEAKER_01: I think I was like getting ready to go on vacation too, so I was like really trying to lace this thing up before I left, and it just kept going further and further.
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: I think at least I had scheduled it like earlier in the week, so I think it just took up my whole week.
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: So that was I remember that.
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: Okay, Josh, I gotta knock this.
- 28:45SPEAKER_00: You're sending me pictures, which I wasn't there, yeah, so I didn't get to experience it firsthand.
- 28:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, stairs are kind of a one-man show for that stuff.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so yeah, that was my yeah.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: Now you're the stain master.
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: I'm trying, I'm doing a weird one right now on this stuff, so but I think I got it.
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: Jeremy's quite good.
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: He's quite good in stains.
- 29:02SPEAKER_01: Josh, Josh tells me that, but every time I do a stain job, I'm never happy with it.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: Because you're looking at it from two inches away.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: I literally have to get Josh to be like, hey, I'm just like, dude, can you look at this and tell me if it sucks?
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: You're like, no, it looks good.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: I'm like, all right, cool, fine.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, when you're up on it all day, you're like, you can see every imperfection, but then you you look back from a foot or two, you're like, oh, it's fine.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: It's fine.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: And then you usually the client's not looking at it as rigorously as I am.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: So well, I got another job.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: Hit me.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: I got one where I actually got dressed down and yelled at in person.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: Well, it was trying to remember this one going.
- 29:37SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, you'll you'll remember it.
- 29:39SPEAKER_00: So it was I ended up doing a presentation at a real estate office.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: Oh, this lady.
- 29:43SPEAKER_00: Uh, because I think I actually cold called a bunch of realtors, but then one knew my family, and then I'll bring you in, did a presentation.
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: So I'm trying to land this real estate office.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: Uh, like people to use us.
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: And it was the broker, like the head lady that whoever runs the you know, the whole brokerage wants like, hey, I'll hire to do the exterior of my house.
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: I go there, right?
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: Cool, because you want this to go well, quoted all out, and I'm thinking, like, we'll do this side of the house.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of exterior windows and trim.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: It was just trim, one a lot of siding.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, all right, a day for this, day for this, day for that.
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: So we start the job.
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: I was like, all right, we'll knock out this side of the house with three guys today.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: And we're about two hours in, and I look at our progress, I'm like, oh no, oh no.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be three days just for this side of the house, with the guys like, all right.
- 30:31SPEAKER_00: It's like, okay, we're gonna have to speed this up.
- 30:33SPEAKER_00: And there was like all like the all the windows were real intricate.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: They had like all the what you call mullions inside and everything.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: So I said, all right, so in my quote, I used to do this cute little thing where it'd say, uh, paint this until coverage is achieved.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so coverage is achieved could mean one coat or it could mean two.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: A very, a very subjective line in the coat.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: Luckily, the paint we use was somewhat similar.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: It was very good paint at the time, and one coat did it.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: So I was like, all right, dude, we do one coat and then we're out to the next.
- 31:01SPEAKER_00: And it did look good.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: Like it did look good when we were done, but we're still way behind.
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: I was like, all right, let's go.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: And then there's a bajillion windows in the back.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: There's mullions on the inside of the house.
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: And then she came to me, she's like, uh, are you guys doing two coats?
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: I was like, seeing the quote, it just says till coverage is achieved.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: She's like, I thought I was getting two coats.
- 31:18SPEAKER_00: So that was one thing.
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: And she said another day, are you doing these window interior mullions?
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: Like, no, uh, and but I didn't write my quote, we're not doing that.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: So it was a little like up in the air, we'll say.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: Uh, so it wasn't like definitive one way or another.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, of course, my opinion was it wasn't included, and hers was it was, and she got a slamming deal.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'm like, who would do all this work for this price?
- 31:39SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: And then like that, every single time.
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: And then she got so mad because we weren't doing it, and she's the brother.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: She was and Jeremy's, I think you arrived at the job before me.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like, dude, she wants to talk to you, she looks mad, and she just lit into me, man.
- 31:56SPEAKER_00: She was just like, you know, I'm probably like 27, 28 at the time, and she just ripped into me.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: You did this, you did that, and just let it all go.
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: And she must have been holding in some frustration because and I just took it.
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: I just sat there, like, you know what?
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: She's gonna be mad.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: Like, look, I'm and like she just everything she just you did this, you won code, and this didn't do the moins, blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.
- 32:20SPEAKER_00: And this lady's like probably in her like 50s, maybe early 60s, and like she got she has to know this is a great deal, but somehow like she's getting screwed.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: That's how she feels like you know what?
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: Okay, so even though we're not making any money, I can get and this was probably stupid, but it did solve the problem.
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: I can give you a discount since we only did one coat.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: I can take off this.
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: Fine.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: And I was like, we'll just finish up and we'll be done.
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: And we finished up, and dude, it was it was we made no money on that job.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: It was awful.
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: And surprisingly, we didn't get any more work from that real estate office.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's so weird.
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: Because then we screwed up another realtor's job at the same time.
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: Remember that purple house?
- 33:01SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: So it was a purple stucco house where we sprayed it, but then everyone from Sheron Williams told us to go with like a satin or finish, and it just flashed like crazy.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think uh I think that was a legit paint failure, though.
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: It was a legit paint failure, but we should have done a flat.
- 33:16SPEAKER_01: We sprayed it well, and then it just didn't, man, that was and then we're like, no, we'll just spray it again.
- 33:21SPEAKER_00: We sprayed that thing like four times, and we got free paint.
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: We should have just dropped it down to a flat, but we didn't know better, so we screwed up his job, and then we screwed up her job like right next to each other, and then last time we worked for that real estate office, yeah.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: And uh yeah, a lot of times the leads that you get from realtors are not good, so depends.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: It it depends on what they're into, but man, I because I remember we had uh we had another guy from I don't know if it was from that office or another one, but he would feed us work down from like like down towards Philly, and uh that's where we painted that super creepy um house of those people that own the bakery.
- 34:01SPEAKER_01: They had all those creepy dolls everywhere.
- 34:03SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: So those were uh but like they can be hit and miss.
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: It was a lot of like little fiddly bits because a lot of times they're just like prepping a house for sale.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: It just depends on kind of what bracket they're in, but um, and a lot of times they don't want to spend any money, they just want to like get it ready for sale, doing the minimum stuff.
- 34:21SPEAKER_01: So, but uh I was I was thinking of uh uh oh man, I think I just lost it.
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: Crap.
- 34:30SPEAKER_01: What was that one I was thinking about?
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: Um it'll come back to me.
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I remember the the lady being mad at you.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: I remember that one.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: You kind of gave me a head of like, hey, uh just like I was GC in the job, so you're like, I'm just the the worker here.
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, that's the best.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: So some Josh and I will like uh depends on who does the quote is like kind of who's in charge of the job site, unless we hand it off.
- 34:53SPEAKER_01: Um, and uh when the client has only dealt with like you, then I just pretend I'm like an idiot.
- 35:00SPEAKER_01: This just like works here.
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I don't know.
- 35:03SPEAKER_01: I just paint the balls.
- 35:04SPEAKER_01: Like I just don't, I try not to, you know, and they find out we're partners, and I have like and like back then you were definitely like running the show.
- 35:13SPEAKER_01: Well, I didn't become a partner until like way later, but uh yeah, that was I remember on that one too, because sh that was uh like an old house that had a it had the most windows and mullions you could have.
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: This is insane, and then they she had this like uh overhang, I think it was like over the front door with like a little receiving area, and it was like stucco on the inside, and we tried using our HVLP gun to like get in there.
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: I think we killed our HVLP.
- 35:39SPEAKER_01: And like you would try to like rotate it, yeah, and like then it would lose pressure because they weren't that good back then.
- 35:44SPEAKER_01: And we should just use like a regular sprayer, but that one was that one wasn't great.
- 35:49SPEAKER_01: So uh because I remember the gun didn't work and the everything didn't work.
- 35:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I would just say like if you have if a job's going poorly, like one of the best things you can do just for your mental survival is to just uh like close it, finish it out as whatever you need to do to finish it out, uh, would be the the one I would and not let it drag.
- 36:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just you're like, oh, but the issue is you'd have other people being like, hey, when you get into my job and all those jobs, you'd you would actually do well or do much better than like working this you know job for for nickels.
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you're tempted to you know, and sometimes I mean now we catch it way sooner, so then you have a rough discussion with the homeowner and you're like, hey, but I mean we haven't we haven't whiffed on stuff that bad.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: So the the the job I was thinking about was it uh it culminated in I think the most I've ever painted in a short amount of time, uh where we did a quote.
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: You did the quote for a fella that was like flipping homes.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: Oh no.
- 36:53SPEAKER_01: And uh and it was me, you, and our buddy Jordan were painting, and we drove out, it was far away, it was like 40 some minutes away from our normal jam.
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: And I know I came in your truck, and uh we get there, and it's a flipper, so they're they're doing like everything, and there's no flooring in.
- 37:11SPEAKER_01: Uh, there was no electrical, there was no, I think they did have like one extension cord that had like a daisy chain of other stuff coming off of it.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: There was no plumbing, so there's no bathrooms on the premises, and we go in there and you know, contractors come in all shapes and sizes, but on this one it was like dirtbag central, so it was just like Gatorade bottles full of piss, like all through the house, and then we were spraying, and uh we I we like sprayed and I think we backrolled, and it was the first time doing interior spraying on something like that.
- 37:48SPEAKER_00: We're like, Well, this is what you use it for.
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: So we got I think I bought a sprayer for that job, or we had one.
- 37:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh no, we bought yeah.
- 37:55SPEAKER_00: So we had one.
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: I'm like, let's do it.
- 37:57SPEAKER_00: How do you do this?
- 37:57SPEAKER_00: Because it wasn't even YouTube back then, or if it was, it was in its infancy.
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: No, not like it is now, yeah.
- 38:02SPEAKER_01: So, but we were spraying, which uh can suck, especially.
- 38:06SPEAKER_01: I don't think we like ventilated it correctly.
- 38:08SPEAKER_01: We were just like basically hotboxing ourselves in there.
- 38:11SPEAKER_01: I think we did have respirators, we did, um, but like we were we didn't have like airflow and all the stuff that you know you probably should do for sure.
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: Uh, but then we were painting for it was like a 12-hour day, an 18-hour day, and then like a 16.
- 38:29SPEAKER_01: It was something like that.
- 38:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was it was rough.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: And we definitely put an 18-hour day.
- 38:34SPEAKER_01: It was like we were there late.
- 38:35SPEAKER_01: It was like we got there at like six, and there was one day we didn't leave till like two in the morning.
- 38:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:40SPEAKER_01: And uh, I remember we like we were so hungry the one night we were like, dude, we gotta go get some food.
- 38:46SPEAKER_01: Generally, we don't pull off to go get food that's not you know, we're not taking like a three-hour lunch break to go around and get food, but we drove to some I don't even it must have just been like a search on someone's phone.
- 39:01SPEAKER_01: And this is like early days of smartphones and stuff.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: So we found a spot, got there, and it was like a pizza shop, and we got like you know, sandwiches and whatever, and it was I was so hungry.
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: We were it was like the best sandwich I ever had, and it probably I don't even know if it was good, but just at that time so hungry, so hungry.
- 39:18SPEAKER_01: We just wolfed down a ton of food and then went back and kept working.
- 39:22SPEAKER_01: And that that was just like an absolute marathon session of that, and then we didn't even make like you know, I remember the pricing because I gave him a price of like three grand to paint the place, and I thought that was pretty good.
- 39:34SPEAKER_00: He's like, What is this, the Taj Mahal?
- 39:36SPEAKER_00: He's like, I got a price for like almost half.
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: I was like, you know what?
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: Fine, we'll do it for half.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: Uh so it was like I remember it was like 1800 or 1750 to do three guys, and if you put the whole hours like it was like 12, 16, 18, something like that.
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: Like those were the hours of three guys going.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: And so you can do the math on that.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: It is not good.
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: So the$3,000 one still wasn't that good of a price.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: No, for us, but it's just a different ball game when you're talking about flipping, because those guys have it down, like they'll they'll just blow it out super quick.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: That's not how we do it.
- 40:08SPEAKER_01: No, and then there's you know, guys that are kind of more set up for that because the flippers generally aren't they don't they're not overly concerned with super high quality a lot of depending on like what tier they're at, but that would be that one the spackle wasn't dry.
- 40:21SPEAKER_01: Remember that?
- 40:22SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, it just wouldn't dry.
- 40:24SPEAKER_00: Yes, well, because there was no HVAC, it was something it would just stay wet if it was it was like moist outside, it would stay wet for like two days.
- 40:31SPEAKER_01: It was humid and raining, and yeah, it was there was just yeah, because I remember it being rainy outside too.
- 40:36SPEAKER_01: It was not a not a fun time.
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: So that that one stuck in my my mind.
- 40:41SPEAKER_00: That was bad.
- 40:42SPEAKER_00: Especially no bathroom, man.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: Back to the theme of no bathrooms, bathrooms are clutch.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then yeah, it it really does suck to not have uh because it you end up wasting a lot of time too, especially if you have to drive off site.
- 40:55SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, it's just it's it's worth it to something we set up almost immediately is the point guy is like just ask the homeowner like what bathroom would you prefer us use?
- 41:06SPEAKER_01: Like that's something like that where you're you know it's it's generally not a problem if you're already working inside, but if you're working outside, you gotta be like, Yeah, hey, yo, I need a spot.
- 41:16SPEAKER_01: What's going on?
- 41:17SPEAKER_01: So where your back of your wood pile isn't gonna get demolished.
- 41:22SPEAKER_01: Listen, I'm not leaving.
- 41:24SPEAKER_01: So you either tell me what bush you want me to pee in, or you know, it's the choice is yours, but I'm not driving away to do this.
- 41:33SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, but uh yeah, that that one I was thinking of where it was thankfully it was at least a like truncated timetable.
- 41:41SPEAKER_01: We got done three days, and I I think that may have been the one where we went and tried to paint at our commercial account like the day on a Saturday.
- 41:50SPEAKER_01: It was like a Saturday, and then me and you got there, and I think we painted for like maybe an hour, and then I we were both like dead on our feet.
- 41:57SPEAKER_01: I was like, bro, we just just go home.
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: Let's just go home watching movies.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: I think we just went home and like both took naps and watched movies and chilled.
- 42:04SPEAKER_01: That was lovely.
- 42:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, sometimes you gotta call it, you're like, oh, we'll come back.
- 42:08SPEAKER_01: We'll come back on Monday.
- 42:09SPEAKER_01: It's fine.
- 42:10SPEAKER_01: Come back to this later.
- 42:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:12SPEAKER_00: So, but yeah, those were those were some awful jobs.
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: And then uh, if you're listening still, uh, we uh will pitch to the goo crew.
- 42:21SPEAKER_00: Oh, Josh doing the CTA today.
- 42:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so you can come join the goo crew where it's uh a bunch of us painters putting the best uh SOPs together for other painters, hopefully like you, uh, to how to make money, save money, and all the things in between.
- 42:35SPEAKER_00: So we're trying to make it the best group for paint contractors on the planet.
- 42:39SPEAKER_00: That's the long-term goal.
- 42:41SPEAKER_00: And uh, we will be trying to have the best stuff out there.
- 42:44SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 42:45SPEAKER_01: So check out the Goo Crew on school.
- 42:47SPEAKER_01: Link is in the show description.
- 42:49SPEAKER_01: And uh first 150 fellas in there or gals, uh, get in free.
- 42:54SPEAKER_01: Um, but it's for professional painters, and uh, we're just trying to we got some ideas.
- 43:00SPEAKER_01: We're gonna make it cool and uh actually help help uh everybody build a business you'd actually want to operate.
- 43:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're trying to be the most helpful place to be for paint contractors.
- 43:11SPEAKER_01: Yes, so check that out, and uh until next time, y'all take it easy, work smart, and have a good one.
- 43:16SPEAKER_01: Peace.
