Speaker 6: And you are listening to fib ADWCHS the so charleson,
1:00
Speaker 6: I'm del Cooper, Thanks so much for tuning in on
1:02
Speaker 6: this Thursday morning. Typically this is when you can put
1:05
Speaker 6: the power of Peyton on your side and you can
1:07
Speaker 6: call Tom or Harvey here in the studio and get
1:09
Speaker 6: some sage legal advice or talking about the city of Nitro,
1:12
Speaker 6: ww football or any number of things that the patents
1:15
Speaker 6: have talked about for decades on the radio. Here on
1:17
Speaker 6: five EDWCHS. But Tom and Harvey have a charitable heart
1:21
Speaker 6: as well, and they do that very often, and so
1:22
Speaker 6: this morning they have donated their time. They have donated
1:24
Speaker 6: their time this morning to the American Heart Association. Someone
1:27
Speaker 6: I've known for years and years and years, Kevin Polly,
1:30
Speaker 6: is here with the American Heart Association this morning. Kevin,
1:32
Speaker 6: good morning, How you doing this morning?
1:33
Speaker 7: Good morning? And I want to say a quick thanks
1:35
Speaker 7: to Tom.
1:35
Speaker 8: A lot of people have meant to know this, but
1:37
Speaker 8: I've known Tom since seventh grade and we graduated high
1:40
Speaker 8: school together. We graduated from Marshall together, and he is
1:43
Speaker 8: just one of those people that has always been like
1:45
Speaker 8: just one of those one of my favorite people on
1:47
Speaker 8: the planet. We had our thirty year high school reunion
1:50
Speaker 8: just last month and he was like, Hey, would you
1:52
Speaker 8: want to come on and talk about the heart Walk
1:54
Speaker 8: And I was like, you know what, Tom, I would.
1:56
Speaker 8: So I want to say a big thanks to him
1:57
Speaker 8: forgiven us the time. And again, just Tom and Harvey
2:00
Speaker 8: two tremendously wonderful people that I've known for a very
2:03
Speaker 8: long time, and I've got nothing but nothing but love
2:05
Speaker 8: for the Patons.
2:06
Speaker 6: They're a great bunch I thought I'd give you an opportunity,
2:08
Speaker 6: just for a moment to introduce our other guest with Grant,
2:10
Speaker 6: and then let allow him to introduce himself.
2:13
Speaker 8: Well, my guest in the studio with me today is
2:15
Speaker 8: someone who has been just a tremendous force for us,
2:18
Speaker 8: if you can call him either a hero or a
2:20
Speaker 8: glutton for punishment, because this second year in a row
2:23
Speaker 8: of being the chair for the Charleston Heart Walk, he
2:26
Speaker 8: is a tremendous force of good for what we're trying
2:29
Speaker 8: to do here with Immercy Global, and that is our
2:31
Speaker 8: chair for twenty twenty four.
2:33
Speaker 9: Grant bats Thanks Kevin. Certainly you probably hear I've got
2:37
Speaker 9: n accent. I didn't bring him interpreted today, but I
2:39
Speaker 9: guess you'll figure it out.
2:40
Speaker 5: We'll be all right.
2:41
Speaker 9: I've lived in Houston, Texas and Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
2:45
Speaker 7: Yeah you've been around, and Charles.
2:46
Speaker 9: In West Virginia. And I was born and raised in Australia.
2:48
Speaker 9: So my accent's a little confused. But I'm happy to
2:51
Speaker 9: be here today. The American Heart Association is a fantastic cause.
2:56
Speaker 9: It's one that my company is proud to support. My
2:59
Speaker 9: first involvement was doing the Heart Walk in Houston with
3:02
Speaker 9: other folks from the company and moving here to Charleston.
3:05
Speaker 9: The opportunity came up to be the chair and it's
3:09
Speaker 9: been a fantastic thing to be a part of.
3:11
Speaker 5: Give me a little bit about your company.
3:12
Speaker 6: Since your company's bolstering this little bit, we got to
3:15
Speaker 6: give them a little love as well.
3:16
Speaker 9: Yes, So MRC Global is a publicly listed company that
3:20
Speaker 9: am in. MRC Global is actually mcjunkin, so a lot
3:23
Speaker 9: of people would recognize the mcjunkin name.
3:25
Speaker 10: That's right around Charleston.
3:27
Speaker 9: A large employer and MRC Global actually came together. That
3:31
Speaker 9: are in MRC is Redman, so mcjunkin Redman Corporation, and
3:37
Speaker 9: we were bought by Goldman Sachs or those two companies
3:40
Speaker 9: were bought by Goldman Sachs and then they took the
3:42
Speaker 9: company public and now we're a global organization. We're in
3:46
Speaker 9: over twenty countries internationally. And I came to the company
3:49
Speaker 9: when they acquired part of the company that I worked
3:51
Speaker 9: for in Australia.
3:53
Speaker 6: When you talk about a league global corporations like this
3:55
Speaker 6: and partnering with a charitable organization like the American Heart Association,
3:58
Speaker 6: that type of just the the gravitas of bringing a
4:02
Speaker 6: company like that on board in helping that that really
4:04
Speaker 6: speaks volumes for the organization and for the outreach that
4:07
Speaker 6: that that you can participate in as well.
4:09
Speaker 9: Yeah, I think as a global corporation, and particularly with
4:11
Speaker 9: a large presence in the US, we're looking for charitable
4:16
Speaker 9: organizations to support that touch a lot of people. And
4:19
Speaker 9: you know, in terms of heart attack and stroke and
4:22
Speaker 9: cardiac health, right, I don't think there's a better organization
4:26
Speaker 9: than the AHA. And we see them with a huge
4:29
Speaker 9: national presence, and so all of the locations that we
4:32
Speaker 9: operate in in the US, and we're around about one
4:34
Speaker 9: hundred locations around the country, you know, there are people
4:38
Speaker 9: with those same problems and the American Heart Associations active.
4:41
Speaker 10: So it's a perfect partner for us.
4:43
Speaker 6: And to speak on that a little bit, Kevin, how
4:45
Speaker 6: what does it mean to have someone that's uh, that's
4:48
Speaker 6: on your board, that's that's uh, that's chairing the board
4:50
Speaker 6: for it, for this type of event that has that
4:53
Speaker 6: kind of exposure naturally nationally I mean, of course grants
4:56
Speaker 6: here locally, but the company that he represents, I mean,
4:58
Speaker 6: that is a huge partnership.
4:59
Speaker 8: Well, it is, and I think what it really comes
5:00
Speaker 8: down to is showing the importance of these kinds of partnerships.
5:03
Speaker 8: You know, we talk about what we do on on
5:06
Speaker 8: at a very basic level. The main things that you're
5:08
Speaker 8: funding when you help the Heart Association are research, which
5:11
Speaker 8: if you know anybody walking around today who has a stint,
5:14
Speaker 8: if you know anybody who's ever been resuscitated from CPR,
5:18
Speaker 8: if you know anybody who's on any kind of medication
5:20
Speaker 8: for any kind of heart condition or stroke consin like,
5:22
Speaker 8: that's what that That's what that research does. That's why
5:24
Speaker 8: we have these things. And the other side of it,
5:27
Speaker 8: of course is the education and outreach, and that's the
5:30
Speaker 8: brass tax. That's what you're You're funny, you're funding research
5:32
Speaker 8: and educational outreach. But that doesn't happen in a vacuum.
5:35
Speaker 8: We need support and so when we get sponsors like
5:38
Speaker 8: an MRC Global that come in at a large donation level,
5:42
Speaker 8: that allows us to bring that stuff to life right
5:45
Speaker 8: here in West Virginia. So it's incredibly critical to have
5:48
Speaker 8: that partnership because again that we can't do it without
5:50
Speaker 8: the help, you know, and our sponsors like Embersity Global
5:53
Speaker 8: has been a tremendous sponsor. Now for numerous years, we
5:56
Speaker 8: don't get the support that we have without those those
5:58
Speaker 8: people in the business commut helping us out. Now, the
6:01
Speaker 8: community teams that come together are a whole different animal
6:03
Speaker 8: and they're fantastic and they are really the lifeblood of
6:07
Speaker 8: the event when you actually get to the celebration of
6:09
Speaker 8: the event, But the initial work has to be done
6:11
Speaker 8: with those sponsorships, and Ambercy Global has always stepped up
6:14
Speaker 8: and through that that was how Grant and his beautiful
6:17
Speaker 8: wife Kathleen have gotten involved as chairing co charing basically
6:21
Speaker 8: this event. They have been tremendous allies. And it's that
6:25
Speaker 8: buy in from not just the company saying we want
6:28
Speaker 8: to support it. That's great, but it's the local buy
6:31
Speaker 8: in of the individuals that work for that company that
6:33
Speaker 8: really bring the mission to life, that put rubber to
6:35
Speaker 8: the road. And so that's why it's so critical to
6:37
Speaker 8: have that and having Grant step up two years in
6:39
Speaker 8: a row. That doesn't normally happen, and it's wonderful that
6:43
Speaker 8: we got one year out of him, but to be
6:45
Speaker 8: able to get two is really tremendous and really and
6:47
Speaker 8: truly the effort matters it genuinely does well.
6:51
Speaker 6: I know, Kevin that your passion has always exuded quite off,
6:55
Speaker 6: quite quite well when it comes to this, and I
6:57
Speaker 6: think that's contagious to some degree. And fine, it's great
6:59
Speaker 6: to find a partner that can help you out here
7:01
Speaker 6: locally on things like this.
7:02
Speaker 5: I don't want to bury the league as the lead.
7:04
Speaker 6: As far as the Heart Walk goes, we are talking
7:06
Speaker 6: about American Heart Association. But there is the Heart Walk
7:08
Speaker 6: coming up in about a month. It's on October fifth.
7:11
Speaker 6: It's going to start from Gomart Ballpark here in downtown
7:13
Speaker 6: Charles on the Morris Street. It's going to start at
7:15
Speaker 6: nine am. A goal this year is about one hundred
7:17
Speaker 6: and twenty thousand, is though. And we're chugging along. It
7:19
Speaker 6: looks like it looking at the website.
7:20
Speaker 10: Yeah, we're hugging along, Grant.
7:21
Speaker 7: I know.
7:22
Speaker 8: That's one of the things that you've been very instrumental
7:24
Speaker 8: as is getting other companies to get involved. You know,
7:26
Speaker 8: like talk a little bit about that, because like you know,
7:28
Speaker 8: it's like it's like company to company, you know, like
7:30
Speaker 8: that's you have access to open doors that we don't
7:34
Speaker 8: so like talk about that because I think that's a
7:36
Speaker 8: really great thing. The number of businesses locally that get
7:39
Speaker 8: involved with this event.
7:40
Speaker 9: Definitely, and I think that all starts with getting our
7:42
Speaker 9: own employees involved. So you know, our team members, we
7:46
Speaker 9: get them all together, we talk about the event, We
7:48
Speaker 9: try and get a little bit of excitement around the
7:50
Speaker 9: office and get people participating. And of course, on top
7:54
Speaker 9: of the connections that I have in the local community,
7:57
Speaker 9: our employees have connections too, sopping people that they know
8:01
Speaker 9: and trying to get them involved. And this year, I think,
8:04
Speaker 9: more so than last year, we've been having a dialogue
8:07
Speaker 9: with our vendors about whether or not they want to
8:09
Speaker 9: get involved, so and seeing them make donations to our
8:14
Speaker 9: MIC Global team Aaron Charleston. But also some of them
8:17
Speaker 9: are saying that they want to walk, so that's fantastic.
8:20
Speaker 6: That is great, And of course there's over three hundred
8:22
Speaker 6: hard events I think nationally every year that raises over
8:26
Speaker 6: one hundred million dollars annually. I think this is a
8:27
Speaker 6: huge initiative and this year it's extra specially American Heart
8:31
Speaker 6: Association is celebrating its on hundred year anniversary, So all
8:33
Speaker 6: of those things are kind of combining here with a
8:35
Speaker 6: great initiative here for the state of West Virginia.
8:37
Speaker 8: Yeah, the great thing about the centennial celebration is it's
8:39
Speaker 8: really allowed us to put a spotlight on the fact that, yeah,
8:42
Speaker 8: we've been around since nineteen twenty four.
8:45
Speaker 5: It's amazing.
8:45
Speaker 7: Yeah that's insane when you think about it.
8:47
Speaker 8: And it really was just like you know, nineteen docks
8:49
Speaker 8: in Chicago who got together and said we need to
8:51
Speaker 8: do this. And now look at us. You know, we
8:53
Speaker 8: technically are an international organization, and so when you look
8:56
Speaker 8: at what these walks do, you know, the heart walks
8:59
Speaker 8: in and we have other events too, the Trust and
9:01
Speaker 8: Heartball and things like that, but the heart Walk is
9:04
Speaker 8: really kind of like the big event that everybody talks
9:07
Speaker 8: about because unlike a heartball, where you've got to get
9:09
Speaker 8: dressed up and it's more fancy and it's more on airs.
9:11
Speaker 8: This is literally for anybody. Anybody, just get up, show up,
9:16
Speaker 8: bring your pets. We have stuff for dogs even like
9:19
Speaker 8: we have a whole compunent with that. And I've even
9:20
Speaker 8: seen people bring a cat. I saw a cat on
9:22
Speaker 8: a leash walking and I'm like, yes, this is the
9:25
Speaker 8: craziest thing I'll see this morning. But I love it.
9:26
Speaker 8: But the thing is, it is a community event, and
9:28
Speaker 8: these events all over the country, you know, you get
9:31
Speaker 8: so much involvement. And again it's not just the sponsors,
9:35
Speaker 8: it's those community teams, and those teams are the ones
9:38
Speaker 8: coming out because they're walking either in memory of someone
9:40
Speaker 8: that they've lost to these diseases, where they're walking in
9:42
Speaker 8: support of someone.
9:43
Speaker 7: Who's overcome them.
9:44
Speaker 8: And one of the things I always tell people to
9:46
Speaker 8: look at when you're at the event, look at all
9:49
Speaker 8: the people who are wearing red ball caps and white
9:51
Speaker 8: ball caps. The red ball cap is a heart survivor.
9:54
Speaker 8: The white ball cap is a stroke survivor. And if
9:56
Speaker 8: you see a child walking around that's got like a
9:58
Speaker 8: red cape on or possibly a camp, they are a
10:01
Speaker 8: congenital heart defects survivor. And the thing that blows my
10:05
Speaker 8: mind is that every year we see more and more
10:08
Speaker 8: people wearing these things, which means every year more and
10:11
Speaker 8: more people are beating this. I've met so many people,
10:14
Speaker 8: especially with congenital heart defect children, who have been like,
10:16
Speaker 8: if the doctors told us if our child had been
10:18
Speaker 8: born twenty years ago, they probably don't make it.
10:22
Speaker 5: And when we were kids, it was a death sentence
10:23
Speaker 5: to show it.
10:23
Speaker 8: Was basically a death siny, and now we live in
10:25
Speaker 8: a world where these kids are thriving, they are getting
10:29
Speaker 8: the help that they need, the procedures are getting stronger,
10:31
Speaker 8: the medications are better, and again that's all that research, man,
10:35
Speaker 8: That's what it all comes down to. So every single
10:37
Speaker 8: person you see with one of those hats on, that's
10:39
Speaker 8: a story. That's a living, breathing example of what we
10:43
Speaker 8: are doing. And that to me, I always tell people
10:45
Speaker 8: when you come out, you're gonna have such a good
10:47
Speaker 8: time because you're gonna meet these people, You're gonna hear
10:49
Speaker 8: those stories, and when you get done with that event
10:51
Speaker 8: that day, the rest of your day is going to
10:53
Speaker 8: be so much better because you've been a part of
10:55
Speaker 8: something that is genuinely making a difference in the community.
10:58
Speaker 8: You're a part of something that is of the community,
11:01
Speaker 8: and that's the beautiful thing about the Heart Walk. It's
11:03
Speaker 8: incredibly fun. There's stuff for kids, there's stuff for pets,
11:06
Speaker 8: there's stuff for everybody. But in the end, when it's
11:09
Speaker 8: all said and done, everybody there is doing something to
11:12
Speaker 8: basically help save a life, and every single ball cap
11:14
Speaker 8: that you see is basically a life that's been saved
11:17
Speaker 8: because you came out and participated in the heartwalk.
11:20
Speaker 6: That's a great and great pitch as always from Kevin
11:23
Speaker 6: talking to Kevin Polly this morning and Grant, I.
11:27
Speaker 5: Forgot your last name again, Yeah, to thank you.
11:29
Speaker 6: I need to write that down as with us this morning,
11:31
Speaker 6: and we're talking about American Heart Association and the upcoming
11:33
Speaker 6: Heartwalk in Charleston, but also just generally about the American
11:35
Speaker 6: Heart Association and the initiatives that it puts forward. I'll
11:39
Speaker 6: talk a little bit about the initiatives that are existing
11:41
Speaker 6: here in West Virginia. And also Kevin was telling me
11:42
Speaker 6: about a great new push on CPR. We'll take a
11:45
Speaker 6: break here in a few moments and come back and
11:46
Speaker 6: talk specifically about CPR. But I wanted to remind folks
11:49
Speaker 6: just how important you talk about, how important you know
11:52
Speaker 6: this community aspect of American Heart Association. Getting everybody on
11:54
Speaker 6: board and raising funds for what you do is important. Now,
11:59
Speaker 6: what you do is very important because it's not only
12:02
Speaker 6: investing in research. I think American Heart Association has invested
12:05
Speaker 6: four point five billion dollars in cardiovascular research. I mean
12:09
Speaker 6: that that is huge, obviously that that is amazing, but
12:12
Speaker 6: also initiatives for overall health and for smoking cessation and
12:16
Speaker 6: different things along those lines. And these initiatives are very
12:19
Speaker 6: important because we now know what the what the relationship
12:22
Speaker 6: is between obesity and heart health, smoking and heart health
12:25
Speaker 6: and things like that. And in West Virginia, unfortunately that
12:28
Speaker 6: it is an amazingly important role to play for the
12:30
Speaker 6: American Heart Association because we're nearly the worst in all
12:33
Speaker 6: of those categories.
12:34
Speaker 8: We still lead the nation in adult smoking rates, and
12:37
Speaker 8: the one most recently that the most egregious one is
12:39
Speaker 8: that we lead the nation in eighth graders who vape,
12:43
Speaker 8: oh man, which is not something you want to ever
12:47
Speaker 8: be the lead in. And so it is one of
12:49
Speaker 8: those things where the work that we're doing and you know,
12:53
Speaker 8: and Grant you can attest to this, like, you know,
12:56
Speaker 8: the volume of people that come out to this event,
12:59
Speaker 8: Like we're not just reaching, you know, a couple dozen people,
13:03
Speaker 8: We're reaching literally hundreds of people. And so I think
13:07
Speaker 8: that's what's really important, the work that's being done here.
13:10
Speaker 8: And I definitely want to get Grant's perspective on this
13:14
Speaker 8: from a chair perspective, like it's so critical to what
13:17
Speaker 8: we're doing. And the CPR thing is one of those
13:19
Speaker 8: that Greet and Kathleen got really involved with us with
13:22
Speaker 8: the initiation we're doing called the Nation of Life Savers.
13:23
Speaker 8: We'll get into that in a minute, but you know,
13:25
Speaker 8: just grant from your perspective, you know, why is this
13:28
Speaker 8: so important? Like why is it so critical to support
13:31
Speaker 8: this event? And also just even something as basic as
13:33
Speaker 8: learning CPR, why is that so critical for our state?
13:37
Speaker 10: I can speak from personal experience. You know, we had
13:40
Speaker 10: someone in.
13:41
Speaker 9: Our office collapse at work and I actually heard him
13:46
Speaker 9: the thought of him hitting the concrete floor and it
13:48
Speaker 9: vibrated the concrete floor in the ground so hard. So
13:51
Speaker 9: myself and a few other people ran to his aid,
13:55
Speaker 9: and we had people that knew CPR in the office.
14:00
Speaker 9: Someone got to work on him right away, probably for
14:03
Speaker 9: a good fifteen or twenty minutes until the paramedics arrived.
14:06
Speaker 9: That guy's life was saved by people knowing what to
14:09
Speaker 9: do in those critical situations.
14:11
Speaker 8: And let me point out that took fifteen minutes to
14:13
Speaker 8: get to MRC Global, which is right here in Charleston.
14:15
Speaker 8: Now imagine if you live out in a more rural territory,
14:17
Speaker 8: that fifteen minutes is probably forty five minutes, possibly even
14:20
Speaker 8: an hour. So that's amazing that you guys got the
14:23
Speaker 8: help that you had for that person. And you're right
14:25
Speaker 8: that life is here today because your folks knew what
14:28
Speaker 8: to do and took action.
14:29
Speaker 9: Even simple little things like having AED devices around the office,
14:33
Speaker 9: which you know these days that's a relative, relatively low
14:35
Speaker 9: cost device. Yet you see offices everywhere that don't have them,
14:39
Speaker 9: and that device it's almost idiot proof, you know it.
14:43
Speaker 9: When you see how to use these things. The machine
14:46
Speaker 9: gives you instructions on how to attach it to the person.
14:48
Speaker 7: It tells you, it talks you through it, and every day.
14:51
Speaker 10: Those machines are saving people's lives.
14:52
Speaker 6: Yeah, and that's a much having access to something like that,
14:55
Speaker 6: and just the education portion. You mentioned rural communities. My
14:58
Speaker 6: mom lives very royally and that's one of the things.
15:01
Speaker 6: From cell phones to internet coverage, electricity, you know, all
15:06
Speaker 6: these things I worry about out in her area. But
15:08
Speaker 6: obviously one of the major things is she's far away
15:10
Speaker 6: from a hospital, far away from services, getting to her
15:14
Speaker 6: house if something happened where she couldn't drop getting to
15:16
Speaker 6: her house and then get I mean, all of these
15:17
Speaker 6: things worry me a lot. And having somebody, whether it
15:20
Speaker 6: be someone in your family, or someone down the street
15:23
Speaker 6: that works at a random look whatever it might be,
15:25
Speaker 6: somebody that could help in situations like that, could say
15:29
Speaker 6: or will save lives somewhere down the line.
15:31
Speaker 8: Yeah, it will, and we'll we'll definitely get more into
15:33
Speaker 8: that with what the Nation of Heart of Life Savers discussion,
15:36
Speaker 8: because that's so important and Grant and Kathleen have been
15:40
Speaker 8: amazing advocates for that, so I definitely want to make
15:42
Speaker 8: sure we talk about that, But I do want to
15:45
Speaker 8: get back to the Heartwalk itself. I just want to
15:47
Speaker 8: remind people that when you are a part of this event,
15:49
Speaker 8: man like you are genuinely making a difference right here
15:52
Speaker 8: in West Virginia. The funding stays in our region. I'm
15:56
Speaker 8: very proud to say that we have right now in
15:59
Speaker 8: this state. We have funded work being done at both
16:02
Speaker 8: WVU and Marshall University. We have AAHA grant funded work
16:06
Speaker 8: happening right here in our state. So it's not like,
16:09
Speaker 8: you know, it just goes away like some pot somewhere else.
16:13
Speaker 8: It literally does come right back here into our state.
16:16
Speaker 8: And that is one of the things that we are
16:17
Speaker 8: so very proud of is that we actually bring in
16:19
Speaker 8: more than what we raise because it all goes into
16:21
Speaker 8: a regional bank basically, and then everything is redistributed, so
16:25
Speaker 8: we end up bringing in more into our state that
16:26
Speaker 8: we actually raise.
16:27
Speaker 7: And we're one of the few states that genuinely say that.
16:29
Speaker 8: And when I say, that's a big deal because it
16:31
Speaker 8: literally means that one hundred percent of everything we raise
16:35
Speaker 8: at our events comes right back into West Virginia. And really,
16:39
Speaker 8: we're one of the few states that can genuinely say that,
16:42
Speaker 8: And it's a really great thing to be able to tout.
16:44
Speaker 8: That is, when you come out and support it, you
16:46
Speaker 8: want to ask where the money goes. It comes right
16:48
Speaker 8: back into your community.
16:49
Speaker 6: That's really targeted. And before we go to break here,
16:51
Speaker 6: just a couple of other things I want to throw up.
16:52
Speaker 6: By the way, if you want to participate in the
16:53
Speaker 6: Heart Walk, we want to make sure that we get
16:55
Speaker 6: that information out there. You can do it individually, you
16:56
Speaker 6: can put a team together, you can do different things.
16:58
Speaker 6: How do folks find out the information and get involved?
17:00
Speaker 8: The easiest thing to do is go to our website,
17:02
Speaker 8: which is just heart dot org and then I'm gonna
17:04
Speaker 8: put a slash here Charleston.
17:06
Speaker 10: W V Walk.
17:07
Speaker 8: That WV is important because If you don't put that,
17:09
Speaker 8: you'll be registered for the Charleston, South Carolina Hart Walk.
17:12
Speaker 8: So heart dot Org slash Charleston WV Walk. And if
17:16
Speaker 8: you do that, you can go right there. You can
17:18
Speaker 8: form your team. I know, grant you guys like it's
17:20
Speaker 8: it's you can attest to how.
17:22
Speaker 7: Easy this is.
17:23
Speaker 9: Oh, it's super easy. Anyone that can use the internet.
17:28
Speaker 5: So it's a heart dot org and you want to
17:31
Speaker 5: do a slash.
17:31
Speaker 8: Slash Charleston WV Walk. And the other thing I want
17:34
Speaker 8: to remind people is it doesn't just have to be
17:35
Speaker 8: like a business. That doesn't have to be like a family.
17:37
Speaker 8: It can be like if you have a church group
17:39
Speaker 8: that wants to support it. And if you have, like
17:41
Speaker 8: you know, a CIVIS group that wants to support it,
17:43
Speaker 8: or a Scout group that wants to support it, or
17:45
Speaker 8: you know a group of kids at your school who
17:48
Speaker 8: want to support anybody can form a team. And the
17:50
Speaker 8: most important word I need to attach to this all
17:53
Speaker 8: is it's free. There's no registration fee, there's nothing. You
17:58
Speaker 8: just sign up. You can set up a goal for
18:00
Speaker 8: your team of how much you want to raise. It
18:01
Speaker 8: can be as low as like one hundred bucks. Two
18:03
Speaker 8: hundred bucks to you know, twenty thirty thousand dollars whatever,
18:06
Speaker 8: wherever you want to go, go big or go home,
18:08
Speaker 8: however you want to get. But the great thing is
18:10
Speaker 8: literally anyone can form a team. And when you look
18:14
Speaker 8: at the numbers, practically everyone is impacted by heart disease
18:18
Speaker 8: or stroke in some way.
18:19
Speaker 6: You can find someone in your family, around your office,
18:21
Speaker 6: wherever it might be, among your friend group, whatever somebody's effect.
18:24
Speaker 8: Yeah, anytime I talk to a group of people, I'll say,
18:26
Speaker 8: show of hands, who's been impacted or know someone who's
18:28
Speaker 8: been impacted, And almost every time it's one hundred percent.
18:30
Speaker 7: It's so rare that it's not.
18:32
Speaker 6: Just to go over a couple of those things. And
18:34
Speaker 6: also to contrast nationally against locally and why it's so
18:37
Speaker 6: important to target West Virginia nationally. Heart disease obviously is
18:41
Speaker 6: a huge issue. There's no it's leading cause of death
18:44
Speaker 6: in the United States, responsible for one and four deaths annually.
18:47
Speaker 6: One hundred and twenty one point five million Americans suffer
18:50
Speaker 6: from cardiovascular disease. Heart disease costs the US three hundred
18:53
Speaker 6: and sixty three dollars billion annually in health care and
18:57
Speaker 6: loss productivity.
18:58
Speaker 5: That's those are horrible numbers.
19:00
Speaker 8: And I'll just throw a number foy that'll blow your mind.
19:02
Speaker 8: For West Virginia when you look at tobacco related illnesses
19:04
Speaker 8: every year, it's over a billion dollars that West Virginia
19:08
Speaker 8: spends out one billion with a bee doctor evil billion, right,
19:12
Speaker 8: And that is in just our state alone per year
19:14
Speaker 8: from tobacco related illnesses.
19:16
Speaker 6: So unlike at national level, in West Virginia, nearly thirty
19:20
Speaker 6: percent of the deaths are from cardiovascular disease, one of
19:22
Speaker 6: the highest rates in the US. And it's and it's
19:24
Speaker 6: all because of the factors that we have contributing to
19:26
Speaker 6: us in our region ability smoking. Along those lines, there's a.
19:30
Speaker 8: Number of factors involved we talk about, you know, basically
19:32
Speaker 8: like the social determinants of health. And a lot of
19:34
Speaker 8: it is not just even like you know, yes, sedentary
19:37
Speaker 8: lifestyle of bastia, this is are all there, but a
19:39
Speaker 8: lot of it is too is access to care, access
19:42
Speaker 8: to fresh water and clean water, access to fresh foods.
19:46
Speaker 8: You know, we have numerous people in this state that
19:48
Speaker 8: have to travel like an hour by bus to get
19:52
Speaker 8: to like a Walmart or any.
19:53
Speaker 5: Kind of soil desert. It's all over the place. He there.
19:56
Speaker 8: Okay, the easiest one to point out, you live in
19:58
Speaker 8: a food desert if you live on the east end
20:00
Speaker 8: of Charleston. True, that is where our state capital is located.
20:03
Speaker 8: That is where the laws for our state are made.
20:06
Speaker 8: And that part of the city is a food desert.
20:10
Speaker 8: Now think about that. Now that's Charleston. We're not even
20:13
Speaker 8: getting into the coal fields or like out into the
20:16
Speaker 8: more what rural areas. That's Charleston. So you know, if
20:19
Speaker 8: we have food deserts in our capital city, they literally
20:24
Speaker 8: are all over the place.
20:25
Speaker 6: My mom lives in Beaumont. There Smith's Grocery and Elkview
20:28
Speaker 6: was out there, but it got washed out with the
20:29
Speaker 6: flood never reopened. There's a small, little independent, IgA type
20:34
Speaker 6: store that's near Mink Shoals or Queen Shoals. I mean
20:37
Speaker 6: that she can go to, but it's not a large
20:39
Speaker 6: store and doesn't have a ton of stuff, and that's it.
20:41
Speaker 6: Other than that, there's two dollar Generals exactly, you know,
20:43
Speaker 6: and that has like pre package food or whatever it
20:46
Speaker 6: might be, and that's it. Otherwise she has to drive
20:48
Speaker 6: all the way to the Kroger and Elfview, either one
20:51
Speaker 6: of them in order to go to the store. That's
20:53
Speaker 6: a distance for a seventy two year old lady to
20:55
Speaker 6: have to travel.
20:56
Speaker 5: But that's also a.
20:57
Speaker 6: Distance for a working mom who who has three kids
21:01
Speaker 6: or whatever it might be, to try to get to
21:02
Speaker 6: the store and do things. I mean, that's a huge
21:04
Speaker 6: issue in this state. It's not just because we're lazy
21:06
Speaker 6: and ignorant or whatever it might be. It's just access
21:08
Speaker 6: to the better thing.
21:09
Speaker 7: I'm going to say on this because Grant, you've been
21:10
Speaker 7: literally all over the world. This is not exclusive to
21:13
Speaker 7: West Virginia.
21:14
Speaker 10: It isn't.
21:14
Speaker 9: And I think the other factor that you can layer
21:16
Speaker 9: on top of all that is heart disease is also
21:19
Speaker 9: has a genetic pretty dissim position.
21:22
Speaker 10: So you know, I'll take my personal case.
21:25
Speaker 9: My dad at fifty two years old, had a quadruple
21:27
Speaker 9: heart bypass. He struggled with high cholesterol. He probably didn't
21:31
Speaker 9: get that treated early enough. His dad died of a
21:34
Speaker 9: heart related in illness at fifty So you have to
21:37
Speaker 9: start to think that there's a factor there. Yes, I
21:40
Speaker 9: started getting my heart checked out, found a hat of blockage,
21:43
Speaker 9: ended up getting a stint at the age of fifty one.
21:46
Speaker 9: So you know, genetics is a big factor in here.
21:48
Speaker 9: So if you add all those lifestyle factors on top
21:51
Speaker 9: of genetics, we have some significant challenges in this community.
21:55
Speaker 7: Yeah, it's a very valid point.
21:57
Speaker 8: And again, you know, Grant is a young man, and
21:59
Speaker 8: when you have because I'm forty eight, you know the same.
22:01
Speaker 8: I've been on cholesterol medications since my twenties, no joke,
22:04
Speaker 8: but I knew because my dad had these issues, my
22:07
Speaker 8: mom had these issues. My doctor was aware to check
22:09
Speaker 8: into that. But we know a lot of people that
22:12
Speaker 8: in Appalachia in general, let me just put it out there.
22:15
Speaker 8: In an Appalachia in general, the thirteen state belt, there
22:17
Speaker 8: are so many people who will only go to a
22:18
Speaker 8: doctor like if they've literally got like an arm falling off,
22:21
Speaker 8: if they're literally at death store. They will not go
22:23
Speaker 8: to a doctor for any other reason. And that's something
22:26
Speaker 8: we're also trying to work if we have a community
22:27
Speaker 8: impact director who is literally working with these small, little
22:31
Speaker 8: mom and pop rural clinics to get them on board
22:34
Speaker 8: with our target BP program, which is helping address blood
22:36
Speaker 8: pressure issues, which again we're a national leader in high pretension.
22:40
Speaker 8: But the great thing about these programs is because it's
22:43
Speaker 8: being done on a local level, so it's super hyper focused.
22:46
Speaker 8: We are finding so many people who did not know
22:48
Speaker 8: they had high blood pressure who are now aware of it.
22:51
Speaker 8: They're taking home blood pressure cuffs, they're talking to a doctor,
22:54
Speaker 8: they're on medication, and we are seeing so many success
22:58
Speaker 8: stories coming out of these rural areas. And I'm telling
23:00
Speaker 8: you that's the kind of work. Again, you're helping fund
23:03
Speaker 8: that kind of work as well, and that work is
23:05
Speaker 8: literally out there putting rubber to the road and these
23:08
Speaker 8: small communities where we desperately need, where they need the
23:10
Speaker 8: most help and probably hear our messaging the least, so
23:13
Speaker 8: we are now able to put boots on the ground
23:15
Speaker 8: in these communities and Valley Health and various other There's
23:18
Speaker 8: a Williamsoon Clinic that they are amazing in what they're doing,
23:22
Speaker 8: and they are literally taking our programs and getting them
23:25
Speaker 8: out into these rural communities. We're working with churches because
23:28
Speaker 8: we know in so many rural areas the church is
23:31
Speaker 8: like the community hub, right, Like that's where everybody goes
23:34
Speaker 8: and they do all kinds of different things. And we're
23:36
Speaker 8: seeing successful programs monitoring blood pressure even in our local churches.
23:41
Speaker 8: So anybody that wants to get involved, like you can
23:44
Speaker 8: get involved, man contact is we will be glad to
23:46
Speaker 8: work with you on that. But those are the kinds
23:48
Speaker 8: of things that you're funding as well. That community impact work.
23:51
Speaker 8: I'm telling you, Holly Mitchell is out there doing the
23:53
Speaker 8: Lord's work every day working with these small rural clinics
23:56
Speaker 8: and even the small rural dentist office. A lot of
23:59
Speaker 8: the dentists offices are attached to a clinic. So if
24:01
Speaker 8: you go get your teeth cleaned and they see that
24:03
Speaker 8: your blood pressure's a little high and you don't have
24:05
Speaker 8: someone you're talking to, they will walk you over to
24:07
Speaker 8: the clinic next door and get you set up, and
24:10
Speaker 8: then suddenly you're talking to someone and suddenly you're able
24:13
Speaker 8: to address it and put it in control.
24:14
Speaker 6: Before you can even talk to someone about modifying lifestyle
24:18
Speaker 6: or anything along those lines, you have to identify the problem.
24:20
Speaker 6: And a lot of people live and how many I mean,
24:23
Speaker 6: I know people in my life. How many people do
24:25
Speaker 6: you know that's just like you know, you know, I'm
24:27
Speaker 6: fine as a fiddle. I mean, they never go to
24:29
Speaker 6: the doctor, they never do anything, you know, but you
24:31
Speaker 6: can tell, you know, maybe somebody's low obese, they have
24:33
Speaker 6: like the flushness and the rosea and things like that.
24:35
Speaker 6: It's like, you know, there could be some blood pressure
24:37
Speaker 6: issues there, you know. I mean, you hope that they
24:39
Speaker 6: get checked out at some point, but they just they
24:41
Speaker 6: don't live somewhere where it's accessible. They come from a
24:43
Speaker 6: culture where you don't go to a doctor a lot
24:45
Speaker 6: of the time unless you know your arm's fallen off
24:47
Speaker 6: or something. So that education piece is huge, I mean,
24:50
Speaker 6: and sometimes it's once the education is deployed, you still
24:54
Speaker 6: have to find the thing. For me, the thing was
24:56
Speaker 6: I mean, I was obese for most of my life.
24:58
Speaker 6: For me, the thing was having a kid at forty
25:00
Speaker 6: four years old. You know, man, I wanted to be
25:03
Speaker 6: around for my kid. I lost an immense amount of
25:05
Speaker 6: weight and and have maintained health. Sure, if there's a
25:09
Speaker 6: selfish element to it, there's an egotistic element, I mean,
25:11
Speaker 6: some of that plays in. There's a health elmet to it,
25:13
Speaker 6: But man, I just want to be around for my kid.
25:14
Speaker 6: That was the trigger. That was the thing that got
25:16
Speaker 6: me to finally be healthy. He's like, man, I can't
25:18
Speaker 6: imagine being three hundred pounds when she's fourteen and I'm sixty.
25:22
Speaker 6: That's just not going to work. And so that was
25:24
Speaker 6: a huge So you have to even when you identify
25:27
Speaker 6: the problem and believe me, blood pressure when I finally
25:29
Speaker 6: got mindscreened and it was so bad, that was that
25:31
Speaker 6: was a that was a co contributing factor because it
25:34
Speaker 6: was like, oh my goodness, this is scary. So those
25:36
Speaker 6: things you have to identify it first, and then you
25:39
Speaker 6: and then you adjust the lifestyle and your alls initiatives
25:41
Speaker 6: tackle each of those in line. You do the education
25:43
Speaker 6: portion and then you do the counseling and the and
25:46
Speaker 6: the portion to find someone's whatever it might be, their
25:48
Speaker 6: motivation on what it's going to be to get over
25:50
Speaker 6: that hump. And that's so and we we.
25:51
Speaker 8: Always talk about what is your why? Yeah, you know
25:54
Speaker 8: your why, and that's really what it comes down to.
25:55
Speaker 8: Your why can be you know, your your children are
25:58
Speaker 8: your why. You know your why for your spouse as
26:00
Speaker 8: your why. You know, that's what it really comes down to.
26:03
Speaker 8: You've got to find that reason for yourself. Grant you,
26:06
Speaker 8: I mean, you've had a family history of it. So
26:08
Speaker 8: for you, I'm sure it was a matter of like
26:09
Speaker 8: I want to be around to enjoy life with Kathleen
26:12
Speaker 8: and with my kids, like that has to be a
26:14
Speaker 8: factor for.
26:14
Speaker 9: You absolutely, and I think you know, everyone has their
26:17
Speaker 9: own struggles. For me, it's having a busy lifestyle, traveling
26:20
Speaker 9: a lot, you know, so things that are really important
26:24
Speaker 9: for you to be where you want to be living
26:26
Speaker 9: into your let's say eighties or nineties. You know, you
26:29
Speaker 9: get caught up in the day to day grind, and
26:31
Speaker 9: the things that slip are the things like regular visits
26:34
Speaker 9: to your doctor to check on your health and things
26:38
Speaker 9: like blood pressure and you know, just those simple signs
26:40
Speaker 9: that if you stay on top of those things or
26:43
Speaker 9: find out that you've got a problem early, you can
26:45
Speaker 9: actually take action. You know, we talk a lot about
26:48
Speaker 9: heart disease. I think stroke is the real insidious killer.
26:52
Speaker 9: You know, heart disease. Not everyone, but many people have
26:55
Speaker 9: the warning signs maybe for months or even years before
26:58
Speaker 9: they have a cardiac event. Stroke is usually hard, yes,
27:02
Speaker 9: and as a community, we talk a lot about heart disease.
27:06
Speaker 10: And not so much about stroke.
27:08
Speaker 9: So that educational component about people recognizing the signs that
27:13
Speaker 9: something's not right and getting treatment, that's the single biggest
27:16
Speaker 9: thing in keeping people alive who are prone to having
27:20
Speaker 9: a stroke.
27:21
Speaker 8: Yeah, with stroke, we always remind people fast right the
27:23
Speaker 8: ac fast of face, drooping, arm, weakness, speech and then
27:28
Speaker 8: tea time to call nine one one and again that
27:30
Speaker 8: that is something that is so great because kids can
27:32
Speaker 8: learn that, ye child, yeah, right, right, A child can
27:35
Speaker 8: learn the importance of just calling nine to one one,
27:37
Speaker 8: like we can teach kids at a really young age
27:40
Speaker 8: to to be you know, looking for these kinds of things.
27:42
Speaker 8: But it's also so critical. As he said, stroke is
27:44
Speaker 8: the the number two killer worldwide and it's the leading
27:48
Speaker 8: cause of disability in this country. Uh So it is
27:50
Speaker 8: something that has a major impact. And with stroke, what
27:52
Speaker 8: we don't think about sometimes as you think about you
27:54
Speaker 8: want to survive it, yes, but there is the afterwork.
27:57
Speaker 8: There is You've got to look at your caretakers, You've
28:00
Speaker 8: got to look at you know, the therapy and things
28:02
Speaker 8: that It is not always an easy road to home, man.
28:05
Speaker 7: It's not most of the time. It's not going to be.
28:07
Speaker 7: But wouldn't it be better?
28:08
Speaker 8: And what we kind of try to take as a
28:09
Speaker 8: preventitive look, would it be better to just never have one?
28:12
Speaker 9: Right?
28:12
Speaker 8: So if you can do things, simple little things man,
28:14
Speaker 8: and I mean one of the things we always push
28:16
Speaker 8: and I know again this is something that's hard to do.
28:18
Speaker 8: In some of these communities. But a thirty minute walk
28:20
Speaker 8: a day can make a world of difference. It can
28:23
Speaker 8: help you drop your cholesterol, drop your blood pressure, and
28:26
Speaker 8: draw pounds. But we have communities where there's no sidewalks,
28:31
Speaker 8: where you can't just walk because you might get hit
28:33
Speaker 8: by a cult truck. So I mean, like again, the
28:35
Speaker 8: social determinants of health, they are a bigger picture that
28:38
Speaker 8: we are trying to work on. And so that's where
28:39
Speaker 8: our community impact work is so critical. But that work
28:42
Speaker 8: doesn't happen without the funding our sponsorships, like through our
28:46
Speaker 8: RCY Global, our community teams that come out to these events.
28:48
Speaker 8: They are helping make sure we have the funding to
28:52
Speaker 8: bring these programs to the masses where we need to
28:55
Speaker 8: be doing the work. And so again it's when you
28:58
Speaker 8: talk about the importance of a heart walk, that heart
29:00
Speaker 8: walk the event itself is a blast, but what you're
29:04
Speaker 8: contributing to is stuff that will be felt statewide for years.
29:09
Speaker 8: And I always tell people, even if you bring in
29:11
Speaker 8: one dollar, that dollar is going to go save someone's life.
29:15
Speaker 8: You may not know that person, or it could be
29:17
Speaker 8: yourself or someone you love, but it will make an
29:21
Speaker 8: actual impact. I don't care how much you bring in.
29:25
Speaker 8: You know, you've got change in your pocket, put it
29:27
Speaker 8: in the in the pot, you know, for our donations.
29:29
Speaker 8: That's great because everything matters, Every single bit matters. There
29:34
Speaker 8: is no there's no too little that you can give.
29:37
Speaker 8: And it's not even just that being at the event,
29:39
Speaker 8: the support of being at that event. Our survivors tell
29:43
Speaker 8: me all the time how much it means to them
29:45
Speaker 8: to see so many people from the community just there
29:48
Speaker 8: like it. It almost feels like it's like a support
29:51
Speaker 8: for them, like a little party for them surviving heart disease,
29:54
Speaker 8: or surviving a stroke, you know, or beating a congeneral
29:57
Speaker 8: heart defect. And that's a beautiful thing to be a part.
30:00
Speaker 8: And if West Virginia does anything right, we do supporting
30:04
Speaker 8: our community better than just about anybody. We come together
30:07
Speaker 8: for anything. And that's what I love about the Heart Walk,
30:10
Speaker 8: because it's a chance for our community to come together
30:13
Speaker 8: to celebrate those who have beaten this disease, to honor
30:16
Speaker 8: those who we've lost. I lost my dad in twenty seventeen, man,
30:19
Speaker 8: so I take it very seriously. I lost my uncle
30:21
Speaker 8: literally on January sixth, twenty twenty one, so I take
30:25
Speaker 8: it very very personally and when you have that kind
30:29
Speaker 8: of passion, when you have that kind of community work, man,
30:31
Speaker 8: it's amazing what can get done.
30:33
Speaker 9: And now, don't think these diseases are something that only
30:35
Speaker 9: affect middle aged people and.
30:37
Speaker 10: The old people.
30:38
Speaker 5: Yeah right, yeah, because it can't affect younger folks as well.
30:41
Speaker 7: We're seeing it a.
30:41
Speaker 8: Few younger and younger, especially in girls. We're seeing women
30:45
Speaker 8: in their late teens, early twenties that are having issues
30:47
Speaker 8: with hearts. And we know that with heart disease being
30:49
Speaker 8: the number one killer of women more than all forms
30:52
Speaker 8: of cancer combined. By the way, let me put that
30:54
Speaker 8: out there. It is something we want women to take
30:56
Speaker 8: very seriously. That's why our go Red for Women campaign,
30:58
Speaker 8: which is in its twentieth year this year. That's such
31:01
Speaker 8: a critical, critical component because everyone has a woman in
31:04
Speaker 8: their life. They care about your mom, your grandma, your spouse,
31:07
Speaker 8: your sister, whatever it is. You've got a woman in
31:09
Speaker 8: your life who matters to you. Or if you're a
31:12
Speaker 8: woman listening to this, your life matters to you. Because
31:14
Speaker 8: you want to take care of your family. You can't
31:16
Speaker 8: do that if you're not here. You can't do it.
31:18
Speaker 8: If you're not taking care of yourself's.

34:00

34:02
Speaker 6: Tom Peton has dedicated their time this morning to the
34:04
Speaker 6: American Heart Association Heart Walk coming up on October fifth.
34:07
Speaker 6: Before we get out of here today, Kevin was telling
34:09
Speaker 6: me before the show a great new initiative that the
34:12
Speaker 6: American Heart Association is putting forth in West Virginia, nationally
34:14
Speaker 6: in West Virginia that has to do a CPR very
34:16
Speaker 6: important for a rural state like ours, that people have
34:19
Speaker 6: these life saving measures and grant baits from MRC Global.
34:24
Speaker 6: Had this very thing happened at your location, I thought,
34:26
Speaker 6: for a minute, you can talk about just how important
34:28
Speaker 6: that is.
34:29
Speaker 9: Yeah, I think back on that day and think about,
34:32
Speaker 9: you know, this guy that we saw coming to the
34:34
Speaker 9: office every day, and he wouldn't be with it here
34:36
Speaker 9: with us today without someone performing CPR. And we're actually
34:40
Speaker 9: in a lucky situation where there are quite a large
34:43
Speaker 9: number of people trained in the office. So you know,
34:45
Speaker 9: even if a couple of people are being away on
34:47
Speaker 9: that day, we had a plethora of people es that
34:51
Speaker 9: could have sprung into action to help out this guy.
34:54
Speaker 9: And you know, it turned out he had a blocked artery.
34:57
Speaker 9: He's widow maker artery. And you know, that guy, unfortunately
35:02
Speaker 9: was destined to leave this world. So, as I said,
35:06
Speaker 9: we kept him alive for about half an hour. We
35:08
Speaker 9: had a number of people running around trying to organize
35:11
Speaker 9: proper medical help. But just those things that you do
35:14
Speaker 9: in those first five minutes of the difference between life
35:17
Speaker 9: and death. And that's what Nation of Life Savers is
35:20
Speaker 9: all about. It's about equipping people and communities with these
35:24
Speaker 9: basic skills to be able to save someone's life. And
35:27
Speaker 9: it could be in the office, it could be on
35:29
Speaker 9: the sporting field, it could be a car wreck. You know,
35:33
Speaker 9: these are just skills that are great skills for people
35:36
Speaker 9: to have and even young children to learn this, right, Kevin,
35:39
Speaker 9: you know, one of the.
35:39
Speaker 8: Things we just passed this past year was the CERP Bill,
35:42
Speaker 8: which is the Cardiac Emergency Response Plan, and now every
35:46
Speaker 8: single sporting event in West Virginia will have a response
35:49
Speaker 8: plan in place, which means that if a cardiac arrest happens,
35:53
Speaker 8: if an event happens, there is a chain of people
35:55
Speaker 8: who know exactly what to do to make the who's
35:57
Speaker 8: calling nine to one one, who's finding the AED, who's
35:59
Speaker 8: to arning CPR, who's there to help that person doing
36:02
Speaker 8: CPR because that's work and you need to switch off
36:04
Speaker 8: every couple of minutes. But there is a plan in
36:06
Speaker 8: place at these events, and now we're trying to expand
36:08
Speaker 8: that to just schools in general, not just sporting events,
36:12
Speaker 8: but all schools in general. Because there was a story
36:14
Speaker 8: last year of an eight year old boy who wanted
36:16
Speaker 8: to cardiac arrest at an elementary school and because everyone
36:19
Speaker 8: at that school had been trained, and not through a
36:21
Speaker 8: ceer P.
36:22
Speaker 7: They just were all trained and knew.
36:23
Speaker 10: What to do.
36:24
Speaker 8: That child is alive today and he was our main
36:26
Speaker 8: spokesperson for the passage of this bill. He was there
36:29
Speaker 8: with Governor Justice and baby Dog to get it passed.
36:31
Speaker 8: But what we're finding now through the research, and again
36:34
Speaker 8: the research you're funding at the heart Walk, children as
36:36
Speaker 8: young as nine years old are actually physically able to
36:40
Speaker 8: perform CPR. So we can teach kids as early as
36:43
Speaker 8: they can learn their abcs how to call nine one one,
36:45
Speaker 8: which is the first part of hands only CPR, called
36:48
Speaker 8: nine one one. The second part push hard and fast
36:50
Speaker 8: and the center of the chest. Now, kids as young
36:52
Speaker 8: as nine years old can actually be able. We know
36:54
Speaker 8: that they can do that. So again, CPR critical thing
36:57
Speaker 8: to learn in a rural state like West Virginia.
36:59
Speaker 6: What great initiative and what a great life saving measure.
37:02
Speaker 6: Just all kinds of great information this morning. The lead though,
37:05
Speaker 6: of course, is the heart Walk that's coming up on
37:06
Speaker 6: October fifth. You can sign up for that at heart
37:09
Speaker 6: dot org Charleston, WV Walk. You can find the information there.
37:12
Speaker 6: Do a search for Heartwalk charts in West Virginia. You'll
37:14
Speaker 6: have it come up. It's free to come up with
37:16
Speaker 6: a team or be an individual and participate in this.
37:18
Speaker 6: It goes towards all the causes that we've told you
37:20
Speaker 6: about the last forty minutes, and I hope that you
37:22
Speaker 6: got a portion of that and you understand exactly just
37:24
Speaker 6: how important this is. Thanks once again from MRC Global.
37:27
Speaker 6: Grant Bates was here. He is the chair of the event.
37:29
Speaker 6: Thank you so much for coming in, great information to share.
37:31
Speaker 6: And Kevin Polly of course always coming in with American
37:33
Speaker 6: Heart Association. Thank you so much much appreciate your passionate.
37:36
