- 0:30Your Bibles to. Mark chapter 10 to A Time in the
- 0:34Life. Of Jesus as he was.
- 0:35Preparing his. Followers for his.
- 0:40Coming crucifixion. It's one of these snapshots that
- 0:46were given as Jesus is trying to prepare this group.
- 0:50For the future. He says in Mark chapter 10 and
- 0:53verse 32. Now they were on the road going
- 0:56up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was going before them, and they were
- 1:01amazed. They.
- 1:03Followed they were. Afraid.
- 1:06And he took the 12 aside again, and began to tell them the
- 1:09things that would happen to him. Behold, we're going up to
- 1:13Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered.
- 1:16To the chief priests. And to the.
- 1:18Scribes. And they will condemn him to
- 1:20death and deliver him to the Gentiles.
- 1:24And they will mock him, and scourge him, and spit on him,
- 1:29and kill him and the. Third day he.
- 1:32Will rise again. Jesus was.
- 1:37Teaching and preparing them for the.
- 1:38Cross. So we look back now, 2000 years
- 1:42later. The cross has.
- 1:44Been for the last 2000 years, the universal sign of
- 1:47Christianity, it doesn't elicit the kind of emotion that it did
- 1:52looking forward. As Jesus was.
- 1:54Preparing them, it's almost like they didn't hear the end.
- 1:58They didn't. Hear that he would rise again.
- 2:01They could only. Hear the cross.
- 2:02Of course, today people wear crosses.
- 2:05On their necks and put crosses in their homes.
- 2:08Some will even. Tattoo A cross.
- 2:10On their arms or their? Legs as a way.
- 2:13To connect with others and remember what Jesus has done, we
- 2:17find crosses on hospitals, in hospital rooms, even on grave.
- 2:22Markers crosses. Everywhere are meaningful.
- 2:26They're a reminder of this important day, a most important
- 2:30day in the history of mankind. You could say from birth to
- 2:34death those of. Us who live in this.
- 2:36Cross culture. Understand what it means and how
- 2:40it's central to our lives, So much so.
- 2:42That Paul the apostle would say it this way in.
- 2:44First Corinthians chapter. Two verse 2.
- 2:47He said. I'm determined not to know
- 2:49anything among you. Except Jesus Christ.
- 2:53And him crucified. This was a.
- 2:56Singular point in the life. Of Paul.
- 2:59He would say it again to the Galatians.
- 3:01He would say this in Galatians chapter 6 and verse 14 he would
- 3:05say. But God forbid that I should
- 3:08boast except. In the cross.
- 3:12Of our Lord Jesus Christ. By whom the world has been
- 3:15crucified to me, and I to. The world.
- 3:19The cross reminds us today, right now, that we're dealing
- 3:22with a God who understands suffering and.
- 3:26Sacrifice. A God who demonstrated.
- 3:31Love the real. Definition of love.
- 3:35The Bible actually tells us that that's.
- 3:37Where God demonstrated his love on the.
- 3:40Cross Good Friday. Is known as God's most painful
- 3:46moment, the painful moment that Jesus himself experienced on our
- 3:51behalf. While we might have these clean
- 3:54decorative crosses and jewelry reminding us of a day, that's
- 3:59not what Jesus hung on. He hung on a very crude, painful
- 4:05wooden contraption that no doubt was used many times before.
- 4:11And many times. After Jesus.
- 4:13Hung on it, he endured a most horrific thing a man could ever
- 4:20endure. Before the cross, Jesus.
- 4:24Experienced what's known as the Roman scourging.
- 4:28You remember here in Mark? He tells them.
- 4:30I'm going to be scourged, I'm going to be beaten the
- 4:36scourging. Is described by.
- 4:38Some as using this instrument that.
- 4:42Was a short whip. And in that.
- 4:45Short whip. Several.
- 4:46Single. Or braided leather.
- 4:47Thongs. Were used.
- 4:48Of variable links in which small iron?
- 4:51Balls or sharp? Pieces of sheep bones were tied
- 4:54at intervals, the man. Jesus.
- 4:59Would have been stripped of his clothing and his hands would
- 5:02have been tied to then upright. Post where?
- 5:05His back. And his buttocks and his legs
- 5:09were beaten and flogged. The scourging was intended to
- 5:13weaken the victim. To a state just short of
- 5:16collapse or death. As Roman soldiers, one on
- 5:21either. Side repeatedly struck the
- 5:24victim's back with full force. The iron balls would cause deep
- 5:28confusions and the leather thongs with the sheep bones
- 5:32would cut into the skin and the subcutaneous tissues.
- 5:36Then, as the flogging continued, the lacerations would tear into
- 5:40the underlying skeletal muscles. The two scourgers, one on either
- 5:45side of the victim, took turns. With full force.
- 5:50Beating the man relentlessly. Over and over again.
- 5:56Almost. Always the scourging.
- 5:58Would lead to one of two outcomes, Jesus being one of the
- 6:02exceptions. The scourging would either lead
- 6:04to an early confession of some crime, whether the person did it
- 6:10or not, so that the beating would stop, or a man would die
- 6:14under this beating. Yet.
- 6:17Jesus, enduring to the end, would then take and.
- 6:20Pick up his. Cross carrying its load on his.
- 6:24Beat up body. Crucifixion was brutal.
- 6:28It was invented by the Persians. But it was perfected.
- 6:32By the Romans, the Persians. Believed that the earth was
- 6:36sacred. So the criminal was.
- 6:38Lifted up so his death wouldn't defile the earth.
- 6:41As one Jewish. Writer wrote Crucifixion.
- 6:44Is the most. Terrible.
- 6:45And. Cruel death which?
- 6:47Man has ever devised for taking vengeance on his fellow man.
- 6:53Tacitus called it a torture. Only fit.
- 6:56For slaves, it's. Fitting that the Romans would
- 7:01perfect it, and they used it more than anyone else in their
- 7:04cruelty in enforcing the law. Their law.
- 7:08Some estimate that the Romans killed some 30,000 Jews by
- 7:12crucifixion, and it sent a message if you and I were to see
- 7:17it and walk by the. Road as a.
- 7:19Person on the cross was. Displayed to us.
- 7:21It would send us a message too, and that is the messages.
- 7:25Don't mess with Rome. This will be your end.
- 7:30Rome, understanding its viciousness, kept it just.
- 7:33For a very select group of people.
- 7:38Rome would only use crucifixion for rebels, runaway slaves and
- 7:46the lowest. Type.
- 7:47Of criminal. It was so.
- 7:49Cruel that no Roman citizen would ever.
- 7:52Be crucified, crucifixion. Then would have been.
- 7:56Followed the. Scourging very closely in time
- 8:01and it would have involved laying Jesus on his open.
- 8:04Lacerated bleeding. Back on a huge, rough, splenary
- 8:08cross the Roman soldiers would then take.
- 8:12Spikes 5 to. 7 inches long and hammer them between the two arm
- 8:17bones at the wrist, crushing the medial nerve.
- 8:21The pain was absolutely unbearable.
- 8:25In fact, it was literally beyond.
- 8:26Words to describe it was so. Painful and hard on the person
- 8:33that they had to invent a new word.
- 8:36To. Describe the pain of
- 8:38crucifixion. We use it all the time, but now
- 8:40you'll know or be reminded that when you.
- 8:43Use this word. It takes you right back to the
- 8:47torturous death of our Saviour. When they describe the pain of
- 8:52someone. That was crucified.
- 8:55They would use this word. They would say it.
- 8:56Was excruciating and the word literally means from the.
- 9:01Cross or out of the cross it was.
- 9:03Pain that came out. Of the cross they had to.
- 9:08Create a new word because in the language of the day, there was
- 9:12nothing to describe what was experienced at this point Jesus
- 9:17would have been. Hoisted as the crossbar was
- 9:20attached to the vertical. Stake and then the nails were
- 9:24driven through. Jesus feet.
- 9:26Again, the nerves in his feet would have been.
- 9:28Crushed, Crushed. And severed nerves were
- 9:31certainly bad enough, but his arms would have then immediately
- 9:34been stretched beyond his. Ability to adjust.
- 9:40And as his arms would have been stretched.
- 9:42Probably at least. 6 inches in length.
- 9:45Old Shoulders would have been then dislocated, fulfilling the
- 9:48Old Testament prophecy in Psalm 20.
- 9:51Two where it? Speaks of his bones being out of
- 9:54joint. A man at crucifixion would.
- 9:56Die either by. Asphyxiation.
- 10:00Or by cardiac arrest. It was designed to prolong the
- 10:05pain and not hasten the death. It was designed to torture a
- 10:13man, and that's what Jesus went through for us.
- 10:18That's what we can remember and attach when we see a symbol of
- 10:22a. Cross or we?
- 10:23Put one on in the morning in a. T-shirt or.
- 10:26A necklace or we have one hanging in our front room that
- 10:29can be so common that we forget the significance of what it
- 10:33means. Jesus, his perfect sinless
- 10:36offering was. Provided as a way of escape for
- 10:39us. The Bible puts it this way.
- 10:42In Second Corinthians chapter 5 and verse 21.
- 10:45The Bible says. He made him who knew no sin to
- 10:49be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God
- 10:53in him. Jesus would have.
- 10:56Suffered in silence throughout. All of his.
- 10:58Hours of interrogation and torture and agony.
- 11:02Like the Bible. Predicted in Isaiah.
- 11:04Chapter 50. Three and verse seven he was.
- 11:06Oppressed. And he was.
- 11:07Afflicted yet he. Opened not his mouth.
- 11:10He was. Led as a lamb to the.
- 11:11Slaughter. And as a.
- 11:12Sheep before his. Shearers as silent, He opened
- 11:15not his mouth, And yet when the weight of humanity's sins were
- 11:19poured upon him. He cries out.
- 11:22This is Matthew 2746. It says about the 9th.
- 11:26Hour. Jesus cries out with a loud
- 11:28voice. Saying Eli, Eli, Lama
- 11:30Sabachthani, that is my God my. God, why have you?
- 11:36Forsaken me. Now we are introduced or invited
- 11:41into the emotional and mental side of the Crucifixion.
- 11:45We don't often think of the kind of pain that.
- 11:49Jesus the. Human.
- 11:52The man God in human. Flesh dealt with.
- 11:58The word forsaken here literally means.
- 12:01To be deserted. Or abandoned or rejected and
- 12:05these. Words are shocking to us as we.
- 12:07Think about deity hanging in humanity upon the cross.
- 12:12They disarm us and cause us to ask the question, what does he
- 12:16mean? What is he trying to describe?
- 12:19What is he inviting us into? It's hard.
- 12:22For us as human beings, even to fathom what's taking place.
- 12:25Here. We're on holy ground as we look
- 12:28into. Such a subject.
- 12:32Yet the impact on our lives is so significant that.
- 12:35It does bear. A few moments.
- 12:37To discuss, I think, if. We better understand what Jesus
- 12:41actually went through and the incredible pain he experienced.
- 12:44It would give us even a greater appreciation, that's why.
- 12:47We take a day. To commemorate the crucifixion,
- 12:53the celebration of the resurrection is just a.
- 12:55Few days later. But again, as you consider.
- 13:00The. Apostles and the.
- 13:01Followers of Jesus. They don't fully understand
- 13:05what's going to happen yet. They've been prepared, they've
- 13:08been taught. A.
- 13:09Lot of you hang in the balance in a very similar way.
- 13:12You don't know how something's going to turn out.
- 13:15You have the promise of God. You have.
- 13:17You have the assurance of. God you have.
- 13:19People in your life coming alongside of you, getting you
- 13:21through the moment, but you don't know yet.
- 13:23What a glorious day awaits still yet.
- 13:26Future. You see when.
- 13:28Jesus, said my God, my God. Why have you?
- 13:31Forsaken me. They weren't the delusions of a
- 13:34man in pain. His.
- 13:36Faith. Here was not failing him.
- 13:39I believe as Jesus was. Hanging there at this moment he
- 13:41was bearing the sins of the world even.
- 13:45As the Bible says. He was dying as a substitute for
- 13:48you and for me, even as we personalize it.
- 13:52He was. Bearing your sin at that moment,
- 13:57how can we not consider, I mean even driving in today and
- 14:02considering the moments that I'll have?
- 14:03Here today. In just such a high and holy
- 14:06moment, how can I not remember what God saved me from my sin
- 14:16and my walk and relationship? With God.
- 14:20To him was imputed the. Guilt.
- 14:25And the shame. Of.
- 14:27All of our sins and his suffering was the necessary
- 14:32punishment for those sins on our behalf, even unto death.
- 14:40It was no sterile transaction. It was.
- 14:46A Relational Sacrifice. The essence of that punishment
- 14:51was the outpouring of. God's wrath.
- 14:55Upon sinners. What we deserve?
- 14:59There's so much talk today when there's injustice and challenges
- 15:03and inequities. Personally, culturally,
- 15:10politically. It's just this immediate.
- 15:13Cry for justice. And of course, in our
- 15:16imperfections we we interpret justice in a variety of
- 15:21different ways. Some even go so far to think
- 15:24justice is vengeance and retribution.
- 15:29But you have to understand here. God has settled.
- 15:32The matter of your sin, and mine by laying it upon his own
- 15:36innocent son on that. Good Friday, which is?
- 15:40Startling to me, isn't it? Startling to us to think.
- 15:45Of the worst. Injustice.
- 15:49Literally the worst. Day of humanity and all the
- 15:53worst days that are in this room right now that are watching
- 15:56online listening all the. Worst days that.
- 15:58We've all experienced, we have. Quite a few.
- 16:01Including the worst of the. Worst this.
- 16:06Day in Human History. Was the worst.
- 16:09Far surpassing all of. Ours.
- 16:13Combined and mixed. Together it's.
- 16:15Startling to me. That here we are a.
- 16:18Few thousand years later, thinking about the.
- 16:20Worst. Day and considering it as.
- 16:24The best day? God can do that.
- 16:29It's hard to. Believe, and it requires an
- 16:31amount, a massive amount of faith, to consider that.
- 16:35Our worst days? Can actually become.
- 16:39Best days. In the hands of God, in some
- 16:44mysterious. Way that we.
- 16:47Can never fully understand during these awful hours on the.
- 16:51Cross the Father. Was pouring out the full measure
- 16:54of his wrath against sin and the recipient of that wrath.
- 16:58Was God's. Only beloved Son, listen, God
- 17:04was punishing. Jesus as if he.
- 17:06Personally committed every. Wicked deed.
- 17:08Committed by every wicked Sinner, and in doing.
- 17:11So he could. Treat and forgive.
- 17:13Those. Redeemed ones as if they lived.
- 17:16Christ's perfect. Life in righteousness.
- 17:20It's a glorious transaction and transformation and substitution
- 17:24on our behalf. We know this event happened.
- 17:28We know there was a moment that on Calvary, when the sin of the
- 17:31world was poured upon him, when he was, who knew no sin was made
- 17:36to be sin for us. The problem with sin is that it
- 17:40creates separation. That is the greatest issue with.
- 17:45Sin. It separates us from God, but on
- 17:48a very. Real way we live.
- 17:50In a world where sin has separated us from one another as
- 17:53well, sin produces separation. Friends from friends, parents
- 17:59from children, and mankind from God even here.
- 18:04For a free. Few brief moments in a way,
- 18:09that's. Hard for us to fully grasp.
- 18:10Separating the Son from the Father.
- 18:14The Bible says. That God cannot look upon sin
- 18:18and. Jesus was forsaken by God that
- 18:20he would. So that we would never have to
- 18:22be in Hebrews chapter 13, it says let your conduct be without
- 18:27covetousness. Be content with such things as.
- 18:30You have for. He himself has said I will never
- 18:33leave you nor. Forsake you.
- 18:36And So what is John he records for?
- 18:38Us the words that. Are so important, so important
- 18:42for. Us to grasp.
- 18:43That when? Jesus received.
- 18:46The sour wine, he said. It is finished.
- 18:51It is finished. And bowing his head, he.
- 18:54Gave up his spirit. You know, it's more than just
- 18:57good. Friday.
- 18:59With those final. Words Good Friday.
- 19:01Becomes Great Friday transformation of lives for you
- 19:06and me. Consider these thoughts and let
- 19:10them sink in. As we leave.
- 19:12This room in a few moments, and every time you take of the
- 19:15elements of communion, you're coming.
- 19:17Back to this. Time not merely to a sterile
- 19:21room, perhaps in a final meal. Where the Passover.
- 19:24Is being shared and the bread is being spread around and the cup
- 19:27of wine is being given. It's not to.
- 19:30That that. Symbol is not taking you.
- 19:32Back to the Passover. Room it's taking.
- 19:35You back to the cross. It's far more significant than
- 19:40sometimes our minds will allow it to.
- 19:42Be a good. Friday becomes a great.
- 19:45Friday, because God did. Such a great thing on our
- 19:48behalf. Your sins can be forgiven and
- 19:51washed clean. Now is not the time in the world
- 19:56in which we live. Today just to.
- 19:57Attend religious services and have some kind of moral
- 20:02appearance to other. People.
- 20:05It's not that time, even as you head back home or go.
- 20:09Back to work. Now is the time to get.
- 20:12Serious with a God who loves you and take the blood of Jesus
- 20:17Christ seriously. And the price that was paid on
- 20:21our behalf, some of you even today you.
- 20:24You have to. Say God, I'm a Sinner, and I ask
- 20:28you to forgive me. I believe you.
- 20:30Died on the cross. And that you did this for me,
- 20:34and I give you my life, I release control.
- 20:38I turn away from my sin, I repent of it, and I turn to
- 20:41Jesus as. Savior.
- 20:43As the Lord fills me. With his spirit, today's a day.
- 20:47Of seriousness, you think of being with Jesus for a moment.
- 20:54How the? Disciples left the.
- 20:57Day. You know, the Bible says that
- 20:58they abandoned him. They ran away, maybe looking
- 21:02from a distance, some closer than others.
- 21:05But they all. They couldn't take it.
- 21:09And that has an effect When you're met with great love and
- 21:14great love has responded with great sin or mistakes.
- 21:19You know, whether they did that as a sin or they just ran away
- 21:23because they couldn't take it, I can understand all the different
- 21:26emotions that would be surrounding them, but they lived
- 21:28with that. For three days they lived with
- 21:33the. Consideration that.
- 21:34All was lost. They lived with the.
- 21:38Sensation that their best friend was just tortured and they
- 21:41couldn't do or didn't do anything for him, you think?
- 21:44Of Peter. And what he had to endure,
- 21:47because not only did he turn his back on his friend, he denied
- 21:52him. And, you know, God allows these
- 21:55things in our lives when we're matched up with great, amazing.
- 22:01Like like this? Event is intended to draw us
- 22:04away from just the mundane and religious.
- 22:07Activity of life. It's.
- 22:09It's meant to get. US to a higher level.
- 22:12Of understanding and faith, even though our response may not be
- 22:16measured up to the occasion, but God is working in your life and
- 22:23He wants you to. Rise to the.
- 22:25Occasion. He desires you, God's heart for
- 22:29us. As if we might rise to the
- 22:32occasion of the days in which we live, and we can.
- 22:36Because. Of what Jesus has done for us.
- 22:39So as we. Leave here in a few moments.
- 22:42There'll be no final song. There'll be no anything.
- 22:47I'm just going to pray and we're going to say Amen.
- 22:49And then you're going to leave. With this on your mind, we'll
- 22:53gather again. We're not going to wait three
- 22:55days for the resurrection of Jesus.
- 22:58We'll be. Here, in almost 24 hours
- 23:01celebrating his resurrection, but indeed, we're celebrating
- 23:04something that has already happened, we get to know the end
- 23:07of the story. But the disciples?
- 23:10The Apostles. Didn't.
- 23:11And even some of you don't know the end of the story of what
- 23:14you're going through right now either.
- 23:16And you can trust. God that.
- 23:17There's a better day coming. That there's a.
- 23:21Sunday to match your Friday as you trust him.
- 23:26So, God, we want to rise to the occasion as we consider the
- 23:30reality. Of great sacrifice we are truly.
- 23:40In a a solemn moment like Holy Ground and life is going to suck
- 23:47us right back in so quickly, as I'm sure it did with the.
- 23:50Disciples. They had to go into life with
- 23:52emotions and they had to go into life with failure and they had
- 23:55to go into life with so much. Because life is life.
- 24:00We can't live in a. Bubble So I pray for your church
- 24:03today. All the good.
- 24:05Friday gatherings today and tonight and the holy and high
- 24:09moment of a weekend. Filled with worship.
- 24:12And adoration, celebration, release, resurrection services.
- 24:18But it's more than a celebration.
- 24:20It's a solemn occasion for dedication and consideration of
- 24:26all that you've done on our. Behalf God, have your way with
- 24:29us. That we might rise to another
- 24:33level from today in this moment, and that we might receive the
- 24:41comfort and encouragement that's only available.
- 24:43To us by faith. And.
