- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:31So today we are talking about rewiring your days and this is a
- 0:36subject that's very fascinating to me because most people show
- 0:40up for coaching and they think, Oh my gosh, I don't know how I'm
- 0:44going to do this. I don't know how I'm going to
- 0:47change. I don't know the particulars of
- 0:49any of this and they get overwhelmed before they even
- 0:51start. And one of the simplest things
- 0:54that I, I really have to have everybody understand right at
- 0:59the, from the very beginning of working with me and coaching
- 1:01with me is that you are a creature of habit.
- 1:05You are a creature of patterns. And it is possible to change
- 1:09like you have to believe it's possible to change.
- 1:12And by changing your patterns, even the simplest of patterns,
- 1:15things start to evolve. So there are estimates out there
- 1:19that we have between 60 and 80 thousand thoughts a day.
- 1:22I mean, think about that. That's insane that that a person
- 1:25can have that many. My thoughts.
- 1:26First of all, it always fascinates me as to how they
- 1:28track this, but they do. And 60 to 80 thousand thoughts a
- 1:33day. The kicker is 2/3 of them are
- 1:36repeated from the day before. Now that's even more insane when
- 1:40you think about the how the human brain works and when you
- 1:43repeat things, they become part of who you are.
- 1:46So most of us learned multiplication that way, where
- 1:49we were just drilled, wrote, learned it over and over and
- 1:52over and over until we could recite it and do it quickly so
- 1:56that we knew those basic fundamentals, which is the the
- 2:00crux of how your brain likes to work.
- 2:03Repetition is the mother of skill for human beings.
- 2:06And once we do it, we can do it better and better and better and
- 2:09better. But the really hard thing to
- 2:11understand is if the patterns are not resourceful, you are
- 2:16repeating them anyway. You are becoming more
- 2:20resourceful at the unresourceful activity.
- 2:23So think about what I just said. If it's a destructive activity
- 2:26and you do it more and more and you become better at the
- 2:29destructive activity, you're still going to.
- 2:31It's going to be a pattern. It's still going to affect you.
- 2:34You can't just get away from it because it's destructive, you
- 2:37know? And we have patterns in
- 2:38everything we do. Think about how you take a
- 2:40shower. You go and get in the shower in
- 2:42the morning or the evening. Whenever you do your showering
- 2:45and boom, all of a sudden you wash the same way.
- 2:49You have the same pattern of how you wash yourself, how you do
- 2:51your hair. Same thing about how you blow
- 2:54dry your hair or how you shave, brush your teeth.
- 2:57You always start in the same spot.
- 2:58For most people it is very driven.
- 3:01The side of the bed they sleep on, how they put their clothes
- 3:03on. Try to put your sneakers and
- 3:06socks on differently and watch how your brain goes.
- 3:08Wait, what? Because it's so conditioned.
- 3:11So the point of this is rewiring your brain is very simple in the
- 3:18sense that you change the pattern of how you do something
- 3:21and then everything else gets scrambled.
- 3:23So let's say you want to start your day off and you want to
- 3:26start meditating. And you've always said, I want
- 3:28to meditate. I know it's good for me.
- 3:30I hear how great it is, but I just can't seem to get it.
- 3:33I, I struggle with it. Part of the problem is you're
- 3:36trying to insert something new into old patterns.
- 3:40So I will often tell my clients the best way to do that is to
- 3:44start scrambling your patterns. Now for any Seinfeld fans out
- 3:48there, if you've, if you're a big Seinfeld fan and I am a big
- 3:51Seinfeld fan, there was an episode where George was talking
- 3:54about opposite George and he was going to do the opposite of
- 3:57everything that George ever talked about.
- 3:59And it was so great because he was scrambling his own patterns
- 4:01right down to if he ordered tuna salad, now he was going to order
- 4:05egg salad. If he was going to order coffee,
- 4:07he would normally now always order coffee.
- 4:09He would now order tea. He's scrambling the simplest of
- 4:13patterns. And then the others become open
- 4:16to interpretation and you can allow new things to happen.
- 4:20It's kind of like you're tricking your brain.
- 4:22You're just saying, if I always walk to my left and now I walk
- 4:25to my right, and while I'm walking to my right I think of
- 4:28something else I want to do, it becomes easier.
- 4:31So right from the morning, let's say we're going to add in the
- 4:34meditation. You wake up in the morning
- 4:36instead of going in and you know, doing your day like you
- 4:41normally would, grabbing your phone, checking your text
- 4:43messages, your emails or whatever.
- 4:45You say no, I'm not going to do that.
- 4:47You get up, you drink water and you go and you meditate first.
- 4:51Right away you've scrambled your brain because you're not looking
- 4:54at the old pattern and doing the phone or whatever.
- 4:57Now obviously you probably have to pee in there first.
- 5:00You get up. I know.
- 5:00I'm just saying that don't touch the typical patterns.
- 5:04It's OK though, to get up and pee first if you need to.
- 5:07Or get up and brush your teeth and pee fine.
- 5:09But talk about it in the sense of the big stuff that you're
- 5:12going to move around so that your brain does not have the
- 5:15same response. I promise you, if you try this
- 5:18technique, you're going to be astounded as to how different
- 5:21you feel right away. Because it really doesn't matter
- 5:24if you're going for a walk or you're meditating or you decide
- 5:27to read or you decide to change the smallest of small things,
- 5:30the one shift in the morning makes all the difference.
- 5:33So work on this and practice it, scramble as much as you can and
- 5:39then try putting the new things in because I promise you when
- 5:43you do it, it will interrupt those old patterns and then you
- 5:46have the opportunity to put in the new ones you want.
- 5:50I hope you all have a blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
