- 0:00The future of ocean conservation won't be
- 0:02built by scientists alone,
- 0:03and it won't be built by businesses
- 0:04alone. It'll be built
- 0:06when those worlds collide.
- 0:08Because the biggest ocean problems we
- 0:10face today aren't just scientific.
- 0:13They're economic, they're political, and
- 0:14they're technological.
- 0:16And no single sector
- 0:18can solve all on its own.
- 0:20And if you look at how
- 0:22politics are done in today's world,
- 0:24if you look at how
- 0:25everything is done in today's world,
- 0:27businesses play a very important role,
- 0:30not only from running the
- 0:31economy or influencing the
- 0:33economy, but these days, a lot of the
- 0:35billionaires or the CEOs tend
- 0:38to be the experts that people
- 0:40turn to, that politicians turn to, and
- 0:42other people turn to, to
- 0:43find out how to build businesses
- 0:45and how to run a country in some cases.
- 0:47So we know that businesses
- 0:49are going to be influential,
- 0:50and not only being able to scale projects
- 0:53like we've talked in
- 0:54the last two episodes,
- 0:55but also to combine with ocean
- 0:58conservationists and
- 0:59scientists to help protect the ocean.
- 1:02This is the how to protect the ocean
- 1:03podcast. And if you're listening, because
- 1:04you want to find out more
- 1:06about the ocean each and every weekday,
- 1:08and you want to find out
- 1:09the breakdown of science,
- 1:10policy, and solutions, hit that follow
- 1:13button right now, because
- 1:14this week, we are going over
- 1:17solutions and how businesses and science
- 1:19can collide together to
- 1:21partner in protecting the
- 1:23ocean. And we do that at conferences like
- 1:26the World Ocean Summit that
- 1:27I went to a couple weeks ago.
- 1:29And we also can do that at the Earth X
- 1:30conference that's happening April 20 to
- 1:32the 22nd of this year.
- 1:34It happens each and every year. If you
- 1:36want to go to it, you're going
- 1:37to want to listen to Friday's
- 1:38episode, right? Interview the CEO of
- 1:40Earth X, Peter Simic, who talks about how
- 1:42this conference is not just a
- 1:44conference of just the oceans, the
- 1:45constant conference of solutions of
- 1:47engineering of everything.
- 1:48It's actually 20 conferences in one. So
- 1:50if you are someone who's interested in
- 1:52protecting the ocean,
- 1:52want to find solutions, scale those
- 1:54solutions, you'll want to listen to that
- 1:56episode and go to the Earth X conference.
- 1:58And by the way, they are not sponsoring
- 2:00us today. They just tend to be the theme
- 2:01of this week because I've
- 2:02been doing a lot of themes
- 2:04for the podcast every week. And today
- 2:06we're talking this week, we're talking
- 2:07about ocean solutions and something that
- 2:09I feel is really, really important.
- 2:12Okay, right now, most ocean work still
- 2:15happens in silos. Like I have scientists
- 2:17talk to scientists,
- 2:19businesses talk to businesses,
- 2:20policy makers talk to policy makers. And
- 2:22even within that escape, I've worked in
- 2:24government before, you know, you tend to
- 2:26work, you tend to stick in silos within
- 2:28government, not just within like
- 2:30ministries, but like or among ministries,
- 2:32but within the ministry.
- 2:33So I remember in Canada for fisheries and
- 2:35oceans, Canada, I didn't know really what
- 2:37the west and country, west coast was
- 2:39doing or the east coast was doing because
- 2:40I was in the central coast.
- 2:42And that's what we did. We worked on the
- 2:43Great Lakes and we didn't really go
- 2:45outside unless you met them at a workshop
- 2:47or anything like that.
- 2:48So silos exist in every aspect of ocean
- 2:51conservation, any kind of aquatic
- 2:52conservation or just
- 2:53conservation in general.
- 2:55And when they don't connect, when people
- 2:57don't connect, solutions get stuck.
- 2:59A scientist can discover a breakthrough
- 3:01in coral resilience, but without funding,
- 3:03that research never scales.
- 3:05A company might build a tool that reduces
- 3:07bycatch, but without policy support, no
- 3:10one is required to use it.
- 3:12A government might create a marine
- 3:14protected area, but without enforcement
- 3:16or technology, it exists mostly on paper.
- 3:20So the problem isn't a lack of solutions.
- 3:22It's a lack of connection between the
- 3:24people who can make those solutions work.
- 3:29Take Global Fishing Watch. The project
- 3:31only exists because three very different
- 3:33organizations came together.
- 3:35Google, Oceana and SkyTruth. They
- 3:38combined satellite data, AIS signals and
- 3:41machine learning to do something that
- 3:43used to be impossible.
- 3:45Track fishing activity across the entire
- 3:47ocean in near real time. And what they
- 3:51found changed everything.
- 3:53They revealed that vast areas of the
- 3:55ocean, once thought to be lightly fished,
- 3:57were actually heavily exploited.
- 4:00They exposed patterns of illegal,
- 4:02unreported and unregulated fishing, which
- 4:04is called IUU fisheries.
- 4:06And they made the data public, which
- 4:09means governments, NGOs and journalists
- 4:11can now hold the bad actors accountable.
- 4:13That's not just technology, that's
- 4:15collaboration, creating
- 4:17transparency at global scale.
- 4:20At Earth-X, something unexpected
- 4:21happened. Two politicians from completely
- 4:25different political backgrounds met.
- 4:27Not online, not through headlines. In the
- 4:30same room. They had conversations. They
- 4:33built trust. And over
- 4:34time, they found common ground.
- 4:38Eventually, they helped launch a
- 4:39bipartisan energy caucus. Now, why does
- 4:42that matter for the ocean?
- 4:44Because ocean solutions often fail, not
- 4:46because they don't work, but because they
- 4:48don't survive politics.
- 4:50And we've seen that time and time again,
- 4:52especially in these days.
- 4:53Collaboration creates alignment.
- 4:56And alignment creates action. When
- 4:58different sectors
- 4:59collaborate, something powerful happens.
- 5:02Problems get reframed. A scientist may
- 5:04see coral bleaching as a biological
- 5:06issue. A business might
- 5:08see it as a risk to tourism.
- 5:10A government might see it as a threat to
- 5:12coastal economies. Put
- 5:13those perspectives together.
- 5:15And suddenly the solutions become bigger,
- 5:17faster and more urgent.
- 5:19Solutions get stronger.
- 5:21Science ensures they work. Businesses
- 5:24ensure they scale. And policies ensure
- 5:26they stick. And barriers get removed.
- 5:30Funding flows more easily. Regulations
- 5:31become more realistic. And technology
- 5:33gets adopted faster. Because everyone is
- 5:36involved from the beginning.
- 5:38If you're in science, your work matters.
- 5:41But it won't reach its full impact unless
- 5:44it connects to the real world.
- 5:45If you're in business, you're not just
- 5:47part of the problem. You're not just part
- 5:49of the problem. You can
- 5:50be part of the solution.
- 5:53But only if you understand the science
- 5:54behind what you're building. And if
- 5:57you're early on in your
- 5:57career, this is your advantage.
- 6:00Because the future belongs to people who
- 6:02connect both worlds. People who
- 6:04understand science, business and policy.
- 6:06And know how to bring them together. This
- 6:09is the important part of collaboration.
- 6:12And if you are, like I said, if you're an
- 6:13early scientist or you are an early
- 6:15career scientist or an early career
- 6:16conservationist or even someone who has
- 6:18an idea for a business.
- 6:20This is your advantage now. In today's
- 6:22world, when you have the technology, you
- 6:23can use a number of different tools to
- 6:26start your project, to start your idea
- 6:28and develop that along with scientists,
- 6:30along with conservationists, along with
- 6:31business businesses,
- 6:33along with policy makers.
- 6:34And make sure that it sticks and make
- 6:36sure that you can help solve ocean
- 6:38problems and scale that solution to make
- 6:41it even bigger and have a bigger impact.
- 6:44So if you want to be a part of that
- 6:45future, make sure you're following how to
- 6:47protect the ocean. And if you are and if
- 6:49this episode helped you see conservation
- 6:52differently, share with one other person
- 6:54who needs to hear it.
- 6:55Because the more people who understand
- 6:57how solutions actually work, the better
- 7:00chance we have to protect the ocean. No
- 7:03more just sticking in our silos of
- 7:05science,
- 7:05conservation, business and policy.
- 7:07It is time to bring us everybody to it's
- 7:09time to bring everybody together and
- 7:11understand that we all have to solve the
- 7:14problems that are facing the ocean
- 7:15because the problems that are facing us.
- 7:17I want to thank you so much for joining
- 7:19us on today's episode of the How to
- 7:20Protect the Ocean podcast. Have a great
- 7:22day. Don't forget to follow for the next
- 7:24episode and have a great day. Talk to you
- 7:27next time and happy conservation.
