Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Let's hear from Long Worton's head coach, Rodney Terry.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Last night we had a special basketball preview edition of
- 0:09Speaker 2: Long Worn Weekly from Pluckers, and we got another one
- 0:12Speaker 2: next Thursday night, Halloween Night. Come dressed in your favorite
- 0:14Speaker 2: Halloween costume if you want, come on. It's a live
- 0:17Speaker 2: show from six to seven next Thursday night. It was
- 0:20Speaker 2: live last night, and early in the show we were
- 0:24Speaker 2: talking about the pieces that Rodney Terry is putting together
- 0:28Speaker 2: for this brand new group of Texas Longhorns.
- 0:31Speaker 1: A lot of work went into the off.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Season after walking off the floor in Charlotte last March,
- 0:36Speaker 2: and I know you guys went right back to work
- 0:38Speaker 2: to start getting ready with the influx the new guys
- 0:42Speaker 2: coming in, the guys you had returning, all of that
- 0:44Speaker 2: sort of stuff, And I wanted to give you a
- 0:46Speaker 2: chance just to kind of take.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Folks through it chronologically.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Once we returned from Charlotte after the NCAA tournament, how
- 0:54Speaker 2: you and the staff set about putting in the plan
- 0:57Speaker 2: for the coming twenty twenty four to twenty twenty five season.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Oh sure, Craig, I mean we've had our guys now
- 1:02Speaker 3: for about three months now. Uh that We've got a
- 1:04Speaker 3: chance to work with our guys. We have eight weeks
- 1:06Speaker 3: in the summer. You know, we started a little bit
- 1:08Speaker 3: of fall camp and now we're into in the season
- 1:11Speaker 3: right now.
- 1:11Speaker 4: Uh. You know, our staff did a great job.
- 1:14Speaker 3: First of all, when we finished up, you know, our
- 1:16Speaker 3: Sweet sixteen game against Tennessee, we got back and when
- 1:19Speaker 3: you needed to try to you know, sit down with
- 1:22Speaker 3: each player and individually kind of sye who wanted to
- 1:25Speaker 3: still be here, who didn't want to be here, and
- 1:27Speaker 3: and kind of assessed what we were going to have returning, uh,
- 1:31Speaker 3: before we started embarking on putting the rash together. And
- 1:34Speaker 3: uh we were able to do that. And uh, you know,
- 1:37Speaker 3: we have six returners from from last season, and uh,
- 1:41Speaker 3: you know, our guys did a great job. My staff
- 1:43Speaker 3: did a great job of going out and you know,
- 1:46Speaker 3: attracting other guys that would compliment the guys that we
- 1:48Speaker 3: had returning uh this season. And uh, you know, we
- 1:52Speaker 3: have six guys from the portal. We have four four
- 1:54Speaker 3: freshmen and uh, you know, I'm excited about this group.
- 1:58Speaker 3: I think we got a chance to spend a lot
- 1:59Speaker 3: of time, you know, this summer trying to build chemistry
- 2:03Speaker 3: off the court. I think these guys have really good
- 2:05Speaker 3: chemistry where they already like each other.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Uh.
- 2:08Speaker 3: I think we have a talented group, uh, and we
- 2:10Speaker 3: have a group that has a lot of depth.
- 2:13Speaker 2: How different is the world that you that you deal
- 2:16Speaker 2: in now from say whatever, eight years ago, six years ago, whatever,
- 2:21Speaker 2: before the portal became as such an omnipresent part of
- 2:26Speaker 2: the college basketball season, when you walk off the floor
- 2:29Speaker 2: when your season ends and you start to play for
- 2:32Speaker 2: the future. And now in this day and age, with
- 2:35Speaker 2: the interchangeability of collegiate rosters, how does that change what
- 2:40Speaker 2: you and the staff do when you have to dive
- 2:42Speaker 2: into that figure what you got left and who's coming
- 2:45Speaker 2: back and going from there.
- 2:46Speaker 4: It was very challenging.
- 2:47Speaker 3: I mean, you know, we were able to sign you know,
- 2:50Speaker 3: some guys early, a couple of freshmen early, uh.
- 2:54Speaker 4: In the recruiting period.
- 2:55Speaker 3: But you know, in the old ays, mid May, you'd
- 2:57Speaker 3: have your roster complete and you know what you work
- 3:00Speaker 3: with already going into the first of June and summer. Nowadays,
- 3:04Speaker 3: with the change in landscape of college athletics, in college basketball,
- 3:07Speaker 3: a lot of times you're still all the way up
- 3:09Speaker 3: until August sometimes working on completing your roster. In some programs,
- 3:14Speaker 3: you know still have scholarships available, so that's definitely changed,
- 3:18Speaker 3: and that's different. And you know, again when you're putting
- 3:21Speaker 3: a roster together, one that you're gonna have to try.
- 3:23Speaker 4: To manage and max out in one year. You know
- 3:27Speaker 4: you're fighting time.
- 3:28Speaker 2: How challenging is it because of the fighting time with
- 3:31Speaker 2: your summer workouts, the individual workouts if you're still piecing
- 3:35Speaker 2: together the roster and who can work with who and
- 3:39Speaker 2: practice and do and then how that affects ultimately as
- 3:42Speaker 2: you start to team build, well, it goes into the
- 3:44Speaker 2: first for of your season.
- 3:45Speaker 3: I mean, we started playing this past Saturday, and you
- 3:48Speaker 3: know you can strim it, you can practice, but until
- 3:51Speaker 3: you actually get in game situations, well, guys have to
- 3:54Speaker 3: really try to build chemistry and build familiarity with one
- 3:58Speaker 3: another on the court. That takes time and a lot
- 4:02Speaker 3: of times. And you'll see this day in time in
- 4:04Speaker 3: college athletics, it may be mid season before your team
- 4:07Speaker 3: kind of you know, really shaped in the kind of
- 4:10Speaker 3: team that you think you're capable being for that season.
- 4:12Speaker 2: It's interesting some numbers here, just looking at some of
- 4:16Speaker 2: the combined numbers from the twelve guys who have previously
- 4:20Speaker 2: played in college eight hundred and thirty two career games
- 4:23Speaker 2: with five hundred seventeen starts, six thousand and six six
- 4:28Speaker 2: nine hundred and sixty nine points, three thy, twenty eight rebounds,
- 4:32Speaker 2: nineteen one hundred and seventy six minutes played. Five players
- 4:36Speaker 2: have already earned undergraduate degrees Julian Larry Kayden, Shederick Colbot,
- 4:42Speaker 2: Trema Mark, and Jason Kent. So it's the kind of
- 4:46Speaker 2: thing about I know, coaches like to have what's called
- 4:49Speaker 2: an old roster, at least an advanced roster. It's just
- 4:52Speaker 2: constructed differently nowadays, isn't it.
- 4:54Speaker 3: It is, Craig and a lot of times you want
- 4:56Speaker 3: to Berlin though. You know, for us, again, we've got
- 4:58Speaker 3: six returners guys in the portal and four freshmen. So
- 5:02Speaker 3: we have four freshmen, you know, probably a couple of
- 5:05Speaker 3: those guys with an opportunity to play with the veteran players.
- 5:08Speaker 4: But but you do like.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Stand oh, you do like experience, and you love having continuity.
- 5:12Speaker 4: I mean, we have six returners.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Four of those guys play play significant minutes for us,
- 5:17Speaker 3: and you know they're familia with what we're doing and
- 5:21Speaker 3: defending the culture of our program.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Does it make the learning curve, or at least a
- 5:25Speaker 2: familiarity curve a little shorter when you get these guys
- 5:29Speaker 2: in the summer workouts and you start to get ready
- 5:32Speaker 2: for your fall workouts, when you have experienced guys coming
- 5:35Speaker 2: in to help, kind of lessen and shorten the curve
- 5:38Speaker 2: a little bit for your freshmen the newbies.
- 5:40Speaker 4: It does.
- 5:41Speaker 3: I mean, you'd love to have a team full of,
- 5:43Speaker 3: you know, guys that were there previously with you the
- 5:45Speaker 3: previous year. You know, where you have that continuity already.
- 5:48Speaker 3: But the older guys. The one thing that the older
- 5:50Speaker 3: guys do bring with them is to your point earlier,
- 5:53Speaker 3: they have a lot of experience. They've played a lot,
- 5:55Speaker 3: and they can adapt and pick up these pretty quick
- 5:58Speaker 3: for the better part of you know what your to
- 6:00Speaker 3: do office defensively, So just based on their experience. What
- 6:03Speaker 3: do you like about this group? The best thing you
- 6:06Speaker 3: like about this group? But I think they all like
- 6:08Speaker 3: each other. You know, we played, uh, we played this
- 6:11Speaker 3: past saturday, and we had tremendous bench energy where everybody
- 6:15Speaker 3: was pulling for guys on the floor, was extremely connected
- 6:19Speaker 3: on and off the court of this past saturday. You
- 6:22Speaker 3: didn't have anybody you know, moping or pouting about now playing.
- 6:25Speaker 3: They were just generally excited about about what the guys
- 6:29Speaker 3: were doing on the floor. So, you know, again, I
- 6:32Speaker 3: think that's been very positive because again we're we're you know,
- 6:35Speaker 3: we're deep at each position.
- 6:36Speaker 2: I've heard you say this, I've heard Sarks say with
- 6:39Speaker 2: the football team, say that the players don't count your minutes,
- 6:41Speaker 2: make your minutes count, that that sort of thing, and that.
- 6:44Speaker 1: That helps build the chemistry.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Well, again, I think we have you know, guys, you know,
- 6:47Speaker 3: eight nine starters on this team. I mean, any of
- 6:50Speaker 3: our guys can start for us. I don't really get
- 6:52Speaker 3: caught up in the starting process and everything. I think
- 6:55Speaker 3: you know, when it's your opportunity and it's your time
- 6:57Speaker 3: to be on the floor, I think you you get
- 6:59Speaker 3: out and you perform at a high level and you
- 7:01Speaker 3: just pass up a ton and we don't have a
- 7:03Speaker 3: drop off. But but we do have, you know, experiencing
- 7:06Speaker 3: guys that again I think compliment one another very well.
- 7:09Speaker 3: But but we've got you know, ten eleven guys we
- 7:12Speaker 3: can play.
- 7:13Speaker 2: You know, you said that the thing you like is
- 7:15Speaker 2: that the guys like each other, and that might come
- 7:17Speaker 2: as a surprise to some folks, but not all teams
- 7:21Speaker 2: have that right and and sometimes it's just kind of
- 7:24Speaker 2: a I don't know, if there's an undercurrent of of
- 7:28Speaker 2: uneasiness sometimes with some teams about whether they get along
- 7:31Speaker 2: and who wants to ball more, and this and that
- 7:33Speaker 2: and and and that can.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Make it real challenging for trying for team building.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Cannon, Well, I think again, for us, we try to
- 7:40Speaker 3: work really harder in the summer when guys get to campus.
- 7:43Speaker 3: You know, we really stress how important this it is
- 7:46Speaker 3: for those guys that spend time with each other away
- 7:48Speaker 3: from the basketball court.
- 7:50Speaker 4: You know, again, try to have build some.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Organic chemistry without us having the force feed gas spend
- 7:56Speaker 3: in time with each other. In this group from day one,
- 7:58Speaker 3: those guys all really you know, bunning together.
- 8:01Speaker 4: They like spending time with each other, and uh, you know,
- 8:04Speaker 4: you have to have really good chemistry off the court.
- 8:06Speaker 4: They have really good chemistry on the court.
- 8:08Speaker 2: I think I think I heard you say, uh in
- 8:10Speaker 2: a in a media session, how there'd be a couple
- 8:14Speaker 2: of guys or three guys or whatever it said, They're
- 8:16Speaker 2: all uh gonna go out to LA for a weekend
- 8:19Speaker 2: or something during the summer and and and this was
- 8:21Speaker 2: all organic stuff that they had decided, not things that
- 8:24Speaker 2: you or any of the staff had suggested to them.
- 8:26Speaker 1: No.
- 8:26Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 8:27Speaker 3: We had a couple of guys I think had some
- 8:28Speaker 3: birthdays I think throughout the summer, and you know, we're
- 8:31Speaker 3: gonna be in different locations and you know, you look up,
- 8:34Speaker 3: there's not one guy, there's you know, three or four guys.
- 8:37Speaker 4: The five guys going.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Out to try to celebrate his birthday for him in
- 8:40Speaker 3: a different locations. So you know, those guys like being
- 8:44Speaker 3: around each other. They spend time on the lake this
- 8:46Speaker 3: summer a little bit and stuff as well. And you know,
- 8:48Speaker 3: you again, you don't want to force feed that. You
- 8:51Speaker 3: want guys that want to be around one another. We
- 8:53Speaker 3: have a retreat.
- 8:54Speaker 4: We did. We did our retreat a couple.
- 8:55Speaker 3: Of weeks ago, and that was fantastic for us, another
- 8:59Speaker 3: bunning opportunity for us to really try to connect as
- 9:02Speaker 3: a team. And we also got a chance to also,
- 9:06Speaker 3: do you know, one of our you know, core values
- 9:08Speaker 3: of our program. We had some servant hoood. We had
- 9:11Speaker 3: a chance to go to Children's Hospital in San Antonio
- 9:13Speaker 3: and see some less fortunate youngsters and.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Be a blessing for them.
- 9:18Speaker 3: And get back to them and try to put a
- 9:19Speaker 3: smile on their face, hopefully for not only that day,
- 9:22Speaker 3: for a lasting effect.
- 9:24Speaker 1: So there it is.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Some conversation with Longhorns had basketball coach Roddy Terry with
- 9:30Speaker 2: a little preview of the coming season. Again next Thursday,
- 9:33Speaker 2: Halloween Night, We're gonna do another preview, will meet a
- 9:37Speaker 2: couple more long worn players we had. Jordan Pope and
- 9:39Speaker 2: Jason Kent joined us last night. Kent one of the
- 9:42Speaker 2: two Indiana State transfers along with Julian Larry Jordan Pope
- 9:46Speaker 2: transferring from Oregon State. I did ask Jordan Pope cam
- 9:54Speaker 2: if he knew Silas Bolden when they were both at
- 9:56Speaker 2: Oregon City. He said, across pass with him, but they
- 9:58Speaker 2: didn't really know him really well. He says, I've gotten
- 10:01Speaker 2: to know him better since I've been here, So yeah,
- 10:04Speaker 2: And I said, I'm gonna ask you the same question
- 10:06Speaker 2: to ask Silas. How different is Austin, Texas from Corvallis, Oregon.
- 10:11Speaker 2: He said he didn't. It's a lot different. Of course,
- 10:16Speaker 2: Jordan's from northern California. He's from the Bay Area. And
- 10:20Speaker 2: then he was chatting about high school athletics in the
- 10:23Speaker 2: Bay Area with our own Cole Dixon, who of course
- 10:26Speaker 2: hails from the Bay Area.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Who was our engineer there last night.
- 10:30Speaker 2: All Right, we've got some other NFL notes to get
- 10:33Speaker 2: to coming up next when we continue from Nashville on
- 10:36Speaker 2: Sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
