Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / Maduro arrives in Manhattan as flurry of law enforcement seen at heliport
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I do want to go to Omar Hamenez, who is
- 0:02Speaker 1: following these helicopters landing in New York, which you are
- 0:04Speaker 1: looking at just moments ago.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Omar, what are you seeing?
- 0:09Speaker 3: Yeah, so you heard John Miller talking about three helicopters
- 0:12Speaker 3: that took off from Newburgh headed out this way. We
- 0:16Speaker 3: just saw three helicopters land matching roughly the time it
- 0:20Speaker 3: would take to fly by helicopter here. What you're looking
- 0:24Speaker 3: at right now is what has been an increased law
- 0:27Speaker 3: enforcement one that's increased pretty steadily over the last few
- 0:30Speaker 3: hours since we've been out here. We actually have been
- 0:33Speaker 3: pushed much further back. This is the heliport here where
- 0:36Speaker 3: all of this the variety of law enforcement predominantly NYPD,
- 0:40Speaker 3: but we've seen federal officers here as well, including DEA agents,
- 0:44Speaker 3: a mass of them that just came in within the
- 0:46Speaker 3: last few minutes to this area as well. We're waiting
- 0:49Speaker 3: to see you can hear the helicopters. We saw them
- 0:52Speaker 3: land just beyond our view here, three of them, it appeared.
- 0:56Speaker 3: So we're waiting for them to go into what would
- 0:59Speaker 3: be sort of this this indoor area and then they
- 1:02Speaker 3: would come out come into presumably one of these vehicles
- 1:07Speaker 3: where they would or they would then go for processing
- 1:10Speaker 3: here at a federal building in New York City. Now,
- 1:13Speaker 3: for those that aren't familiar with sort of the geography
- 1:16Speaker 3: of Manhattan and New York City, we're on the west
- 1:18Speaker 3: side of Manhattan what's known as the West Side Highway.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Both lanes in both directions have been closed off by
- 1:25Speaker 3: law enforcement to this point. This is typically a very
- 1:27Speaker 3: busy area. We are now seeing lights from the New
- 1:30Speaker 3: York Police Department turn on. That has not been the
- 1:32Speaker 3: case previously to this point. We can still hear the
- 1:36Speaker 3: motor of the helicopters to this but I can't stress
- 1:38Speaker 3: enough this has been the highest level of law enforcement
- 1:41Speaker 3: presence we have seen to this point, one that has
- 1:44Speaker 3: been steadily increasing over the past few hours.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Jessica, Yeah, and Omar. When we see the DEA agents,
- 1:51Speaker 1: they are walking past the cameras as well.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Okay, Omar, stay with us. Let's bring John.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Miller back in to help us understand what we're looking
- 1:59Speaker 1: at here. John Omar describing the scene.
- 2:02Speaker 2: We're in the middle.
- 2:02Speaker 1: It's actually very close to where we're broadcasting from right now.
- 2:05Speaker 1: It's right behind our building. But we're in the middle
- 2:08Speaker 1: of Manhattan where this is happening.
- 2:10Speaker 2: To take us through what you're seeing in this.
- 2:12Speaker 4: Scene, well, what you're seeing is a joint force. You
- 2:16Speaker 4: have DEA agents, FBI agents, and a contingent of NYPD
- 2:21Speaker 4: people broken into specialized units that are going to make
- 2:26Speaker 4: this critical move. Obviously, this is done under very tight
- 2:30Speaker 4: security because you're dealing with an individual who is charged
- 2:34Speaker 4: with being in league with some of the most violent
- 2:37Speaker 4: drug cartels in the world, who is also a world
- 2:40Speaker 4: leader in his own right, or was at least until
- 2:43Speaker 4: this morning. But what you're looking at there is a
- 2:48Speaker 4: armored vehicle that is what they call a bear Cat.
- 2:52Speaker 4: This is an armored vehicle that can say that contains
- 2:55Speaker 4: what they call a cat team, a counter assault team,
- 3:00Speaker 4: which is part of this motorcade. So you'll have a
- 3:04Speaker 4: vehicle that will contain President Maduro and his wife maybe
- 3:10Speaker 4: in a separate vehicle. You'll have the escort vehicles which
- 3:13Speaker 4: are from NYPD's highway Patrol. They have the route between
- 3:18Speaker 4: where they are and the location they are going to frozen.
- 3:23Speaker 4: As we watch that move out, we see the van,
- 3:28Speaker 4: and then we're going to see the armored vehicle following that,
- 3:31Speaker 4: which is a counter assault team.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Are they they're driving to Brooklyn? Now, is that the plan?
- 3:38Speaker 4: They're driving to a separate location for security reasons. We're
- 3:42Speaker 4: not going to get into that location on the air live,
- 3:45Speaker 4: but that location is a secure law enforcement facility. They
- 3:50Speaker 4: are going to go through the booking process there and
- 3:54Speaker 4: then they are going to go to that other location.
- 3:57Speaker 4: So you see the armored vehicles, you see the van,
- 3:59Speaker 4: you see the ambulance which is part of the contingent
- 4:02Speaker 4: because they've already you know, had to deal with some
- 4:07Speaker 4: medical issues along the way.
- 4:09Speaker 1: It is pretty remarkable. I'm going to go to Omar
- 4:12Speaker 1: for a second as we're watching this happen. Omar, this
- 4:16Speaker 1: is a Saturday night in Manhattan, and this.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Is just an incredible law enforcement likely again with with
- 4:23Speaker 2: the with the you.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Know, now ousted president of Venezuela having traveled here.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Describe the scene for us this is somewhat surreal.
- 4:34Speaker 3: It really is, and for those that have even just
- 4:36Speaker 3: been passing by on the street. I mean, you see
- 4:39Speaker 3: a lot of things in New York City, but the
- 4:40Speaker 3: amount of police and law enforcement presidence just in this
- 4:44Speaker 3: part of Manhattan is even mind blowing. For those that
- 4:47Speaker 3: live here in the city and if you were following
- 4:50Speaker 3: that motor I mean the motor caid essentially that appeared
- 4:54Speaker 3: to hold Maduro and his and his wife, but they
- 4:58Speaker 3: have all cleared out of this area. Was that quick?
- 5:00Speaker 3: And I can tell you when we are a little
- 5:02Speaker 3: bit closer earlier in the day, we were able to
- 5:06Speaker 3: get basically right up to the heliport area. We saw
- 5:09Speaker 3: them sort of what appeared to be tracing a path
- 5:12Speaker 3: from the exit of the heliport through the gate over there,
- 5:17Speaker 3: and the way they positioned their vehicles, it appeared that
- 5:20Speaker 3: it was just going to be a very quick transfer
- 5:22Speaker 3: from that heliport into the vehicles pull out. And that
- 5:25Speaker 3: is exactly what we just saw happen a few minutes
- 5:28Speaker 3: ago here. And as you saw the level of law
- 5:30Speaker 3: enforcement presence just going down the West Side Highway, from
- 5:33Speaker 3: the armored vehicles to that variety of law enforcement, it's
- 5:37Speaker 3: astounding to see on a city street here in New York.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Jessica, Yeah, it certainly is.
- 5:43Speaker 1: I want to go back to John Miller, if he's
- 5:45Speaker 1: still with us, because I have another logistical question for him, John,
- 5:48Speaker 1: which is, you know, when I lived in DC, you
- 5:50Speaker 1: were used to seeing motorcades and they are very used
- 5:52Speaker 1: to clearing streets there.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Obviously New York can do.
- 5:55Speaker 1: That because it gets its fair share of dignitaries as well.
- 5:58Speaker 1: But to move through the New New York streets like this,
- 6:01Speaker 1: what does that take for law enforcement?
- 6:02Speaker 2: How do they keep everybody safe?
- 6:06Speaker 4: You know, in New York City? And I say that
- 6:09Speaker 4: as someone who used to be in charge of these
- 6:12Speaker 4: movements for various presidents, including presidents of the United States.
- 6:16Speaker 4: This is a very experienced team. The NYPD Highway Patrol
- 6:20Speaker 4: team is used to being able to freeze a route
- 6:23Speaker 4: or navigate a route that's unfrozen. In this case, the
- 6:26Speaker 4: route between where they landed and where they're where they're
- 6:29Speaker 4: going was frozen. They have a lot of experience in that.
- 6:34Speaker 4: And that's for dignitaries. This is different, Jessica. This is
- 6:40Speaker 4: a high threat prisoner in charge in a major narcotics
- 6:44Speaker 4: trafficking case who happens to be formally, as a few
- 6:48Speaker 4: hours ago, president of a sovereign nation in our region.
- 6:55Speaker 4: So that is very similar to what they did with
- 7:00Speaker 4: the El Chapo situation, where you had the head of
- 7:04Speaker 4: a major cartel. This is the kind of person that
- 7:08Speaker 4: had a lot of money behind them the resources to
- 7:11Speaker 4: arrange people who could either attack such a motorcade, try
- 7:15Speaker 4: to free a prisoner, try to stage a breakout, So
- 7:19Speaker 4: layers and layers and layers are added on. We saw
- 7:22Speaker 4: a lot of them right there, in terms of the
- 7:24Speaker 4: armored vehicle, the counter assault team in case there was
- 7:27Speaker 4: an assault on motorcade, the numerous blockages of traffic between
- 7:32Speaker 4: where they are and where they're going. But that is
- 7:36Speaker 4: something that they've experienced, and you will see that as
- 7:40Speaker 4: they move from that jail to the court for the
- 7:45Speaker 4: arraignment on Monday, and if there's a trial, you may
- 7:48Speaker 4: see it on a daily basis.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Right, It's really fascinating, all right, John, thank you. I
- 7:51Speaker 1: do wanted to go to Jim Shudeow as well. As
- 7:54Speaker 1: we're watching this play out, Jim.
- 7:57Speaker 5: Jessica, I would just say, we have to remember how
- 7:58Speaker 5: we got to this moment of those helicopters landing on
- 8:01Speaker 5: the West Side Highway. Nicholas Maduro was president of Venezuela,
- 8:05Speaker 5: a Latin American country of tens of millions of people,
- 8:07Speaker 5: until this morning, when he and his wife were taken
- 8:10Speaker 5: out of their bedroom by the US Delta Force in
- 8:13Speaker 5: a highly complex military operation. To in effect decapitate the
- 8:18Speaker 5: leadership of a major country in Latin America. It is
- 8:21Speaker 5: a remarkable I don't say ending, but just next chapter
- 8:25Speaker 5: write this arrival in New York for prosecution in an
- 8:29Speaker 5: enormous event with a whole long list of questions still
- 8:34Speaker 5: to be answered, one of the most prominent of which
- 8:37Speaker 5: is who's going to replace Nicholas Maduro? And who does
- 8:41Speaker 5: the US, which carried out this operation want to replace
- 8:45Speaker 5: Nicholas Maduro? Because it was the position of the Trump
- 8:49Speaker 5: administration till a short time ago, till weeks perhaps months ago,
- 8:53Speaker 5: that it should be the opposition, for instance, the Nobel
- 8:57Speaker 5: Prize winner Maria Karina Machai, and there were public statements
- 9:02Speaker 5: of support. Those have waned and today this morning and
- 9:05Speaker 5: the President, as he announced this operation and Maduro's removal,
- 9:09Speaker 5: was praising Maduro's deputy, the vice president of that country,
- 9:13Speaker 5: Delsi Rodriguez, saying that she wants to do everything she
- 9:17Speaker 5: can and I'm paraphrasing to some degree here to make
- 9:19Speaker 5: Venezuela great again. This is quite remarkable if that would
- 9:24Speaker 5: be this administration's position, to prosecute Maduro, bring him to
- 9:28Speaker 5: the US, replace him with a vice president from that
- 9:31Speaker 5: same regime. We'll see, and then we'll also see what
- 9:36Speaker 5: the US investment is going to be in assuring such
- 9:38Speaker 5: a transition or moving on to new elections. He says
- 9:42Speaker 5: he's willing to put US troops on the ground, how
- 9:45Speaker 5: many and for how long. Quite a remarkable several hours here,
- 9:49Speaker 5: given what we're seeing now in New York. But what
- 9:51Speaker 5: it means for what Maduro left behind
