- 0:00Speaker 1: He just did it. He just did it.
- 0:02Speaker 2: He just did That was me on Tuesday Night television
- 0:08Speaker 2: muted when Pete Alonzo made history, and we could not
- 0:12Speaker 2: end the week without having lou Terminello's take on Alonzo
- 0:17Speaker 2: two fifty three, and maybe a very special guest as well,
- 0:21Speaker 2: who's becoming a frequent contributor by the way, he hosts
- 0:24Speaker 2: a host show named Pag's Perspective, Ryan Pagano, joining the
- 0:28Speaker 2: conversation earlier this week. All right, well, I got my
- 0:31Speaker 2: two favorite friends and met fans on the line with me. Uh,
- 0:36Speaker 2: everybody was kind of surprised. I was wining my Mets
- 0:38Speaker 2: Alonzo gear yesterday, but for good reason, because he was
- 0:41Speaker 2: on the verge of hitting this record breaker, and he does.
- 0:44Speaker 2: And I'll start with lou Terminello. I know that you
- 0:48Speaker 2: have a lot of thoughts about Alonzo breaking the record,
- 0:51Speaker 2: so give us Tourminello's take on this major story.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Well, good afternoon, guys, Ryan and Alex. I mean, obviously
- 1:01Speaker 1: it's a big achievement for Alonso, who's been obviously a
- 1:06Speaker 1: power hitter since day one. He is now the most
- 1:09Speaker 1: prolific home run hitter in Mets history by the numbers.
- 1:14Speaker 1: I do think that everybody went a little overboard. And
- 1:19Speaker 1: you know how big a Met fan I am, and
- 1:22Speaker 1: I'm a big Alonzo fan also, But I'm glad it's
- 1:26Speaker 1: over with. I just want to hopefully the thirteen runs
- 1:31Speaker 1: they scored last night, the six homers that they hit
- 1:34Speaker 1: last night, is a sign of things that come to the
- 1:36Speaker 1: last six weeks. But Alonso is a Met, he wants
- 1:39Speaker 1: to be a Met, He loves the fans. He felt
- 1:43Speaker 1: the pressure last year, no doubt about it. Going into
- 1:46Speaker 1: his walk year. He has the ability to opt out
- 1:49Speaker 1: this year. I'm sure he will, but the Mets have
- 1:52Speaker 1: to resign him. And I don't care what the analytics
- 1:55Speaker 1: say about first baseman aren't important and they're devaluing his basement.
- 2:00Speaker 1: I don't care. You gotta sign this guy. I mean,
- 2:03Speaker 1: the guy is second to the National League in RBIs.
- 2:06Speaker 1: He's been the only men who's been consistent really from
- 2:09Speaker 1: day one, while the rest of the lineup has been shoddy.
- 2:13Speaker 2: He's been the rock of the lineup. And I gotta
- 2:15Speaker 2: tell you, I think both of you could agree his
- 2:18Speaker 2: seeing him at like four hundred homers in a Met
- 2:20Speaker 2: uniform would be something pretty special. Now, Ryan, I know
- 2:24Speaker 2: you're going there tonight, maybe you've got a chance to
- 2:26Speaker 2: meet the polar Bear.
- 2:28Speaker 3: But what was your dog?
- 2:28Speaker 2: Because we were in the studio watching this thing and
- 2:30Speaker 2: it didn't have the first time that happened the second time,
- 2:32Speaker 2: where were you when it happened.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Yeah, it didn't happen the first time. I was actually
- 2:35Speaker 3: on the other side of the glass with the Alex
- 2:38Speaker 3: watching the first at bad and I was convinced, and
- 2:42Speaker 3: I've told you this a couple of times. I was
- 2:44Speaker 3: convinced it was going out that first time, but it
- 2:47Speaker 3: fell just short of the wall down the left field line.
- 2:51Speaker 3: And then the second time I didn't see it live.
- 2:53Speaker 3: But I have to give a lot of credit to
- 2:54Speaker 3: you because you did send me your video of your
- 2:56Speaker 3: own call of the home run. It was kind of
- 2:59Speaker 3: an awkward fly ball, I'll give it. That line drive
- 3:02Speaker 3: to right center that really carried really well, went right
- 3:07Speaker 3: into the bullpens outed right center field, and I don't
- 3:10Speaker 3: think a lot of people really knew it went out
- 3:12Speaker 3: until once everybody really started to celebrate. But you know what,
- 3:16Speaker 3: props to Pete Alonzo. I've been a fan of his
- 3:19Speaker 3: since he cracked that Mets opening day roster in twenty nineteen, and.
- 3:23Speaker 2: He found out a few days beforehand he was going
- 3:25Speaker 2: to make the team.
- 3:26Speaker 3: And that and they had crazy and not only that,
- 3:29Speaker 3: but I still remember vividly getting my Alonzo jersey ordering
- 3:33Speaker 3: it off the fanatics, actually before your promo code, unfortunately, but.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Maybe I'll drop that as a link today. Why you
- 3:41Speaker 2: know what. You still can get your Alonzo Jurney with
- 3:43Speaker 2: my link.
- 3:44Speaker 3: But I still remembered it, ordering it just minutes after
- 3:46Speaker 3: he one Rookie of the year.
- 3:47Speaker 2: It's crazy, but low and Ryan. I was telling my
- 3:50Speaker 2: friend Dan, he was also a big Met fan. This
- 3:52Speaker 2: was a game that showed me the Mets were pissed
- 3:54Speaker 2: off about the way the weekend went. They did not
- 3:56Speaker 2: want to they they had a we're better than that
- 3:58Speaker 2: performance in my you would you guys agree last night?
- 4:03Speaker 1: Well yeah, I mean they had to break out if
- 4:05Speaker 1: they hadn't scored. You know, the lowest scoring team since
- 4:09Speaker 1: June thirteenth in the major leagues, tied with somebody I
- 4:13Speaker 1: don't know, I forgot who, but the thirteen.
- 4:15Speaker 2: There's like a date for every team.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I know that that that date July June thirteenth.
- 4:22Speaker 1: June thirteenth, It's like a line of demarcation for so
- 4:26Speaker 1: many teams.
- 4:27Speaker 3: And.
- 4:29Speaker 1: But you know, Ryan was talking about it wasn't the
- 4:32Speaker 1: classic Alonso blast, and it wasn't. And it reminds me
- 4:38Speaker 1: of and this is obviously before your time, when Mark
- 4:45Speaker 1: Maguire hit number sixty two in Saint Louis. Obviously he
- 4:49Speaker 1: was hitting him into the second and third deck. He
- 4:52Speaker 1: hit a line drive off Steve Tratzel against the Cubs
- 4:55Speaker 1: that went was a line drive that went right over
- 4:57Speaker 1: the fence, right down the line. So oh yeah, you
- 5:00Speaker 1: would expect it to be more like a home run
- 5:04Speaker 1: number two fifty four, which he hit like ur in
- 5:06Speaker 1: the game, which went over as Howie Rose calls it,
- 5:10Speaker 1: and it's a great it's a great call. The Great
- 5:13Speaker 1: Wall of Flushing where and that used to be the
- 5:16Speaker 1: home run wall before they moved it in and they
- 5:18Speaker 1: have it because it was just too it was just
- 5:20Speaker 1: too deep. But I'm happy for Alonso. He's a good kid.
- 5:25Speaker 1: He loves the Mets, and the Mets gotta sign him, don't.
- 5:30Speaker 1: I don't care what analytics say. I don't. I really
- 5:33Speaker 1: really don't care. They got to sign the guy. I mean,
- 5:35Speaker 1: even last year when he had a down year, he's
- 5:38Speaker 1: still droven over ninety. He hit thirty four to thirty
- 5:42Speaker 1: five home runs. I mean that production means something. Let's
- 5:47Speaker 1: face it, nobody else is doing it. So but hopefully
- 5:54Speaker 1: that hopefully they can continue tonight.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean we can. Really, they only hope because
- 6:02Speaker 3: if anything, what last night's action told us, Lou it's
- 6:05Speaker 3: that the Mets truly are capable of breaking out of
- 6:08Speaker 3: this just horrid slump that they've been in over the
- 6:12Speaker 3: past two months. It's like they took all their bent
- 6:15Speaker 3: up frustration and anger over how those past two months
- 6:19Speaker 3: have played out just completely took it all out on
- 6:21Speaker 3: the braves a team that really at this point of
- 6:24Speaker 3: the year, and I didn't think this would be the case,
- 6:26Speaker 3: but they're really just playing for pride at this point
- 6:29Speaker 3: of the year now. In fairness, it's all because of
- 6:31Speaker 3: the injuries that they've faced in their rotation, So just
- 6:35Speaker 3: an overall down year for them. But where this could
- 6:42Speaker 3: perhaps kickstart another great Mets run, Will it actually happen?
- 6:47Speaker 3: We got to find out. I mean, if anything, they
- 6:50Speaker 3: have to prove that this isn't just a one off instance.
- 6:54Speaker 3: They got to continue this consistency, especially with the Phillies
- 6:58Speaker 3: playing the Reds this week as well, which is just
- 7:02Speaker 3: going to be the death of all Mets fans. I feel, uh,
- 7:04Speaker 3: this whole series, which you know, which who do you?
- 7:07Speaker 3: We're Philly or Cincinnati? Nobody could really decide in Mets Land.
- 7:12Speaker 3: And this wouldn't have been an issue if the Mets
- 7:16Speaker 3: weren't in this bad slump. But this very convincing win
- 7:20Speaker 3: against the Braves last night, it might very well be
- 7:23Speaker 3: what they need to break out of it, especially with
- 7:27Speaker 3: their September schedule straight ahead. It's certainly going to be
- 7:32Speaker 3: a tough battle.
- 7:33Speaker 1: It's so difficult, but.
- 7:37Speaker 3: They may be able to do it all.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Right now, they're calling up this prospect, what can you
- 7:40Speaker 2: guys tell me about McLain, which we just talked about
- 7:42Speaker 2: last night, louis right.
- 7:44Speaker 1: I mean, obviously it's one of their their top uh
- 7:48Speaker 1: top pitching prospects, along with a Sprout and Tong who
- 7:55Speaker 1: they just called up from Binghamton to to Syracuse and
- 8:00Speaker 1: he's got a live arm. Again. The difference between one
- 8:04Speaker 1: level to the next is large, and they really have
- 8:10Speaker 1: no choice right now. I don't think they want to
- 8:12Speaker 1: bring these guys up before next year. But let's face it,
- 8:18Speaker 1: the pitching staff, the starting pitching staff is in dire straits.
- 8:23Speaker 1: We've seen Clay Holmes, who did a nice job as
- 8:27Speaker 1: he went from relieve the starter, but then.
- 8:30Speaker 2: He just completely melted down.
- 8:31Speaker 3: It seems like, I mean, now he's more or less
- 8:34Speaker 3: proven that. And I hate to say it, because I
- 8:37Speaker 3: really loved Clay Holmes, especially in the beginning of the year,
- 8:40Speaker 3: and I still do now, but he's pretty much proven
- 8:43Speaker 3: at this point with his recent outings that he can't
- 8:46Speaker 3: go more than five innings. And it's even further that
- 8:49Speaker 3: maybe the Mets should have added the starting rotation arm.
- 8:53Speaker 3: At the deadline, I know a lot of names were
- 8:55Speaker 3: being thrown out their likes of Standi Al Contra, Edward
- 8:59Speaker 3: Cabrera from the Marlin, Zach Gallon, among others.
- 9:02Speaker 1: The guy I thought they were gonna get Brian and Alex.
- 9:05Speaker 1: I really thought they were gonna get Charlie mooreton I
- 9:07Speaker 1: said that that that's the perfect met for the for
- 9:10Speaker 1: these last two months. I thought that he might have
- 9:13Speaker 1: been on their raidar and maybe he was, but uh,
- 9:18Speaker 1: they didn't. I mean, they did fortify the bullpen with
- 9:21Speaker 1: some rentals, uh, but they're starting I mean let's face
- 9:25Speaker 1: Clay Holmes has now pitched almost as many innings this
- 9:32Speaker 1: year as he pitched in the last two years combined
- 9:35Speaker 1: as a relief pitcher. Yeah, you know, maybe he has
- 9:41Speaker 1: he's fatigued. I don't know what they're gonna do next
- 9:45Speaker 1: year moving forward with him. Is he going to Are
- 9:48Speaker 1: they going to put him in the back of the
- 9:49Speaker 1: bullpen like he was with the Yankees and before that
- 9:53Speaker 1: the Pirates. I don't, I don't know. I mean, the
- 9:56Speaker 1: guy obviously has good stuff, but what McClain is he
- 10:02Speaker 1: gonna come in? Is he going to be like a
- 10:05Speaker 1: phenom off the bat or is he going to be
- 10:07Speaker 1: on a pitch a pitch can account is Yeah.
- 10:10Speaker 3: I mean, it's really anybody's guess. What's gonna happen with McLean?
- 10:13Speaker 3: The way that I saw it before the season, as
- 10:16Speaker 3: far as all their top prospects start top starting pitching prospects,
- 10:21Speaker 3: to be exact go likes of McLean, Brandon Sprode, I
- 10:25Speaker 3: always envisioned them playing a twenty fifteen no cinderguard twenty
- 10:29Speaker 3: fifteen Steven Matts kind of rolled down the stretch for
- 10:31Speaker 3: the Mets, somebody that could come up straight from the
- 10:34Speaker 3: miners and pitch a lot of good innings, prove that
- 10:37Speaker 3: they can not only be in the show but then
- 10:39Speaker 3: also deliver some quality postseason starts. We saw that exactly
- 10:42Speaker 3: ten years ago with Thor, we saw it with Matts.
- 10:45Speaker 3: They had their fair share of good postseason action there,
- 10:49Speaker 3: and this was also with a much stronger rotation in
- 10:53Speaker 3: twenty fifteen for the Mets. But no, they don't really
- 10:56Speaker 3: have the same thing. Now. Some good arms there, don't
- 10:58Speaker 3: get me wrong, but as far as a consistency angle
- 11:02Speaker 3: is concerned, it just leaves a lot to be desired there.
- 11:06Speaker 3: But if McLean can prove that he truly belongs in
- 11:10Speaker 3: the show and can play that twenty fifteen cinderguard role
- 11:13Speaker 3: for these twenty twenty five Mets, I mean these possibilities
- 11:17Speaker 3: are endlessly But then again, his first start, it's against
- 11:21Speaker 3: the hot team in the Mariners right now, so we'll
- 11:24Speaker 3: see how it goes.
- 11:25Speaker 1: A hot team with starting pitching that reman is the
- 11:30Speaker 1: starting pitching staff of what it used to be. The
- 11:34Speaker 1: Mariners and the Phillies have starting pitching staffs that can
- 11:38Speaker 1: go deeper. The ats, they don't nobody throws complete games anymore,
- 11:42Speaker 1: which is a joke. But they're more like the which
- 11:45Speaker 1: I don't want to say the old fashioned pitching staffs,
- 11:48Speaker 1: but the way pitching staffs were even ten years ago.
- 11:54Speaker 1: And they're on fire. The Mariners, and it's another hot
- 11:57Speaker 1: team that the Mets are gonna have to play after
- 11:59Speaker 1: the Braves. You know, they ran into the team.
- 12:03Speaker 2: They don't really deal with Cleveland that well, So the
- 12:05Speaker 2: interleague is there.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Just look at the last three series. They played a
- 12:10Speaker 1: red hot Cleveland team, then a red hot Milwaukee team
- 12:14Speaker 1: which absolutely destroyed Pittsburgh last night, fourteenth and nothing.
- 12:19Speaker 2: You think they were eleven straight then, right?
- 12:21Speaker 3: I think that's eleven a crazy run by Milwaukee.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Uh, guys. And I remember that first weekend when Milwaukee
- 12:30Speaker 1: came to the Bronx and got got.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Yeah, so remember that like it was yesterday. Yeah you too,
- 12:37Speaker 3: we all do.
- 12:38Speaker 2: And I had a lot of hopes for the Yanks
- 12:40Speaker 2: after that weekend.
- 12:41Speaker 1: But but they bounced back. I mean Milwaukee bounced back.
- 12:46Speaker 1: You know, the torpedo bats and all this nonsense. Where
- 12:50Speaker 1: are the torpedo the torpedo bats now, Uh, majorly and
- 12:54Speaker 1: a lot of teams are using them.
- 12:55Speaker 2: By the way, I noticed I noticed the h the
- 12:58Speaker 2: fans the Milwaukee because I know a couple of Milwaukee fans.
- 13:01Speaker 2: They're just raveling in the fact that counsel gets to
- 13:04Speaker 2: see them, you know, beat up on the Cubs because
- 13:06Speaker 2: of course he left them for the Cubs. And and
- 13:09Speaker 2: so when they get to beat the Cubs, I know
- 13:11Speaker 2: they love it a little more because of that situation
- 13:13Speaker 2: where he basically left the Brewers and the dust and
- 13:16Speaker 2: went to the Cubs.
- 13:17Speaker 3: I was still surprised at that move, I have to say,
- 13:19Speaker 3: I mean, especially when they already had another manager employed
- 13:22Speaker 3: in David Ross. And I'm still recall he was very
- 13:25Speaker 3: shocked when he got fired from the back he had
- 13:27Speaker 3: already under Ryan.
- 13:30Speaker 1: He was lost. He had done a decent job with them.
- 13:35Speaker 1: He was supposed to be there for the long haul.
- 13:37Speaker 1: And when they got a chance to get counseled, they did,
- 13:41Speaker 1: and that.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Well, I just think nobody handled that well. I don't
- 13:45Speaker 2: think counseled hinted that very well either, But that's another
- 13:47Speaker 2: story for another day. All right, So here we are.
- 13:50Speaker 2: It's August thirteenth. Both teams still sort of sparked. By
- 13:54Speaker 2: the way. I don't remember the playoffs starting in September
- 13:58Speaker 2: for a while I see the first game is in
- 14:00Speaker 2: September thirtieth, I'm like, where did that happen? So they
- 14:03Speaker 2: moved it up a little bit. It seems like to
- 14:04Speaker 2: September thirtieth. But I want to say where we're at
- 14:07Speaker 2: right now is both teams are still struggling even after
- 14:10Speaker 2: these If they both win these series, I don't know
- 14:14Speaker 2: if that will truly truly propel them. I just don't
- 14:16Speaker 2: see this as propeller. Maybe, but what do you guys
- 14:18Speaker 2: think for both the Inks and the Mets. Is it's
- 14:20Speaker 2: a propelling series they needed.
- 14:21Speaker 3: I mean, it could be, but they have to play
- 14:23Speaker 3: their cards, right, Alex. I mean, one win it's just
- 14:27Speaker 3: not gonna be enough in this day and age to
- 14:29Speaker 3: prove that, Okay, maybe this team truly is back or
- 14:32Speaker 3: something like that. It's a very good stepping stone into
- 14:35Speaker 3: getting back into a good stretch, don't get me wrong.
- 14:38Speaker 3: And I've said that this could happen for the Mets,
- 14:41Speaker 3: and I'm sure the Yankees, you know, if they pull
- 14:43Speaker 3: up some pretty compelling wins of their own, I could
- 14:46Speaker 3: very well see the same thing for them. But it
- 14:48Speaker 3: all comes down to those September schedules. And I mean, well,
- 14:53Speaker 3: it just too promising. But at the same time, they
- 14:58Speaker 3: both squads are very equally capable of doing such a thing.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Mhm.
- 15:03Speaker 1: But Ryan, you said the September schedules, and that I
- 15:06Speaker 1: mean starting on Monday night, you know, obviously at the
- 15:09Speaker 1: beginning of the Minnesota series out of the Yankees twenty
- 15:13Speaker 1: three of the remaining games six against Minnesota, three against Washington,
- 15:18Speaker 1: seven against the White Sox, seven against the Orioles, and
- 15:23Speaker 1: three against the Cardinals, which you can go either way
- 15:25Speaker 1: with them. I mean, that's that's that's cake, let's face it,
- 15:32Speaker 1: it should be.
- 15:32Speaker 2: But I remember the Yanks struggled a couple of years
- 15:34Speaker 2: ago in Saint Louis, so I don't know anymore, but
- 15:38Speaker 2: we'll have to see. The Other thing about all this
- 15:42Speaker 2: is you mentioned the rentals, and lou was making the
- 15:44Speaker 2: point that the Inks did not get a lot of rentals.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Actually they got a couple of guys on contract that
- 15:49Speaker 2: could benefit the Yanks in the long run.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Right. Well, I mean, uh, they're not They're not going
- 15:54Speaker 1: to resign. Uh, Devin Williams, They're not. I mean, he
- 16:00Speaker 1: probably doesn't even want to be here because of the pressure.
- 16:03Speaker 1: I do not think that they'll sign Devin Williams, but
- 16:07Speaker 1: do Val is under contract for another year. I think
- 16:11Speaker 1: Bennick is under a contract for two more years. And
- 16:16Speaker 1: I even think Jake Bird is on the contract next
- 16:20Speaker 1: year even though they sent him down to Syracuse. So
- 16:24Speaker 1: I mean, again, doesn't mean that they're not going to
- 16:30Speaker 1: resign Devin Williams. I don't think they are. And I
- 16:33Speaker 1: think Luke Weaver is a free agent this year too,
- 16:36Speaker 1: I'm not sure.
- 16:37Speaker 2: And then they got them for a one year deal
- 16:38Speaker 2: last year.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Yeah, so a lot can happen.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Guys, it's going to be with that, it's going to
- 16:45Speaker 2: be interesting.
- 16:46Speaker 1: And excuse me, Alex. Another guy who I believe can
- 16:50Speaker 1: opt out this year, and he's having a great year,
- 16:53Speaker 1: so he might opt out even though he has two
- 16:56Speaker 1: more years left on this deal is Edwin Diaz.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Yeah, no, and not. You know what's funny, he's not been.
- 17:03Speaker 2: I haven't heard a lot about him this year, to
- 17:06Speaker 2: be honest with you, it seems like he's.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Been, he's been likes out, but the Mets have only
- 17:10Speaker 1: used him three times, like in the last fourteen days.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Maybe that's why, Maybe that's why we haven't heard about
- 17:15Speaker 2: him as much. All Right, I want to just wrap
- 17:18Speaker 2: up with this other stat that Lou was telling me
- 17:20Speaker 2: last night. Since the All Star Break, who's leading the
- 17:22Speaker 2: home run category? This is unbelievable that you told him.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Here is here is the uh crazy stat of the
- 17:30Speaker 1: day since the All Star Break. The team the team
- 17:33Speaker 1: that leads the major leagues and home runs or the
- 17:36Speaker 1: pathetic Chicago White Sox.
- 17:40Speaker 2: You can't make that up. And they went on Sunday,
- 17:42Speaker 2: the Yanks would be out of a playoff spot. You know,
- 17:44Speaker 2: would have gone all that's.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Right, they would have That's right, they would have been
- 17:47Speaker 1: out of the playoffs spot.
- 17:48Speaker 2: I got to ask you about this. So last week
- 17:50Speaker 2: we're at the game, and by the way, gave Williams
- 17:52Speaker 2: pitching tonight for Cleveland after his unbelievable performance, breaking news.
- 17:56Speaker 2: A pitcher can go eight and the third and not
- 17:58Speaker 2: have Tommy jobs right later. But to both of you,
- 18:02Speaker 2: I heard the chance fire Shavez after the game. You
- 18:06Speaker 2: seem to be a proponent of that, Ryan or is
- 18:08Speaker 2: it too late in the season to make a move
- 18:10Speaker 2: like that.
- 18:10Speaker 3: I mean, Stearns has already gone on the record though,
- 18:12Speaker 3: saying that he's not really inclined to fire any of
- 18:16Speaker 3: those coaches mid season during the stretch, and look from
- 18:20Speaker 3: the Stearns's perspective, I get it. You know, you don't
- 18:23Speaker 3: really want to ruffle too many feathers in that clubhouse
- 18:26Speaker 3: by getting rid of your hitting coach like that, especially
- 18:29Speaker 3: when there's I'm sure there's probably a lot of Mets
- 18:32Speaker 3: players that do like chob As' approach. I know there aren't.
- 18:36Speaker 3: That isn't necessarily the case for a lot of the guys.
- 18:38Speaker 3: I mean, just look at Francisco Alvarez. Twenty five homers
- 18:41Speaker 3: in twenty twenty three, solid campaign, solid coming out party
- 18:45Speaker 3: for him. But Chavez is but Chavez, And you know,
- 18:50Speaker 3: this kind of reminds me of Ray series with the
- 18:52Speaker 3: Pirates in the mid twenty tens. Of course, they're pitching
- 18:55Speaker 3: coach back when they made all those wild card appearances.
- 18:58Speaker 3: The more one size fits all approach, where you know,
- 19:02Speaker 3: three hundred foot singles, that's kind of the way to go.
- 19:05Speaker 3: And he wanted Alvarez to be more of a contact guy,
- 19:09Speaker 3: which I can see. I mean, he's not really an
- 19:11Speaker 3: average he doesn't really hit for average, let's just put
- 19:15Speaker 3: it that way. But at the same time, as a
- 19:18Speaker 3: hitting coach, you know, you're also very responsible for making
- 19:22Speaker 3: sure you're playing into all of your hitters strengths here,
- 19:26Speaker 3: and yes, Alvarez is much of a contact guy, but
- 19:28Speaker 3: you could still lean on him for that big home run.
- 19:31Speaker 2: I remember when Louis, I remember when Hojo was the
- 19:34Speaker 2: hitting coach for a long while. There wasn't he Yes,
- 19:37Speaker 2: he was. Well, what are your thoughts on Chavez? I mean,
- 19:40Speaker 2: I know you're not a proponent of firing anybody either
- 19:42Speaker 2: during the season.
- 19:43Speaker 1: No, I am not. I mean I think it would
- 19:47Speaker 1: be it would be more detrimental than beneficial if they
- 19:52Speaker 1: do it now. Now again, hitting coaches are very many
- 19:57Speaker 1: times escapegoat for franchise failures, and it's really not on them.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Is Chavez. The reason that Francisco Lindor's batting one nineties
- 20:09Speaker 1: since June first is Chavez. The reason that Soto is
- 20:15Speaker 1: not hitting what runs in scoring position is Chavez. The
- 20:20Speaker 1: reason that Alonso is having a fantastic year. I mean,
- 20:25Speaker 1: I I don't think that's gonna help. You know, firing
- 20:29Speaker 1: him is going to help in any way. I am
- 20:33Speaker 1: just surprised that this met inconsistent hitting, whether it be
- 20:38Speaker 1: from the top four guys or the guys at the bottom.
- 20:43Speaker 1: I really thought Fiano's was not going to have that.
- 20:47Speaker 1: And last year, let's face it, last year was really
- 20:49Speaker 1: his first year. I know he'd been up before, but
- 20:52Speaker 1: last year was his first full year and he not
- 20:55Speaker 1: only performed in the regular season with the twenty seven
- 20:57Speaker 1: ho runs, but he had a big postseason. He had
- 21:00Speaker 1: big home runs. I did not expect him to have
- 21:04Speaker 1: a quote unquote Souphomore Jinks type season. I mean, he
- 21:08Speaker 1: doesn't look confident at the plate, and that's where chef
- 21:11Speaker 1: As I'm sure is trying to help him. And I
- 21:17Speaker 1: really think Ronnie Mauricio is still the guy. I know
- 21:21Speaker 1: they rushed him up when they when they had some injuries.
- 21:23Speaker 1: I think he's the guy. I mean, if he gets
- 21:26Speaker 1: I mean he's a switch hitter.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Well, look, last year Viendo was called above the year.
- 21:29Speaker 2: There could be that situation coming up here.
- 21:32Speaker 1: So yeah, it could be. But again, guys, we are
- 21:36Speaker 1: now six weeks away from the end of the season.
- 21:39Speaker 1: You know, there's no more fooling around. And when the
- 21:41Speaker 1: Mets had the best record in baseball the day before
- 21:44Speaker 1: June thirteenth, the famous June thirteenth date at forty five
- 21:49Speaker 1: and twenty four, I said, wow, I said, this is great.
- 21:52Speaker 1: The Mets of twenty four twenty one games, all five hundred,
- 21:55Speaker 1: and the hitting has been so inconsistent. Now, up until
- 21:59Speaker 1: that time, they were getting great pitching. But again, when
- 22:04Speaker 1: you go use your when you go to these guys
- 22:06Speaker 1: in the bullpen over and over and over again because
- 22:09Speaker 1: your stars aren't giving you length, it's not going to
- 22:11Speaker 1: be sustainable. And it's happened to the Mets, and it's
- 22:14Speaker 1: happened to other teams too, and that's how it isn't
- 22:18Speaker 1: in Major League baseball. And I know we were talking
- 22:20Speaker 1: about hitting for average a couple of minutes ago. Uh,
- 22:24Speaker 1: I think I think it was Alex We were talking
- 22:26Speaker 1: all their last week in the major leagues. And I
- 22:30Speaker 1: don't know how it is today, but this was, you know,
- 22:32Speaker 1: seven or eight days ago, and obviously these things change.
- 22:35Speaker 1: There were eight eight of players who were over three hundred,
- 22:41Speaker 1: and only another twenty seven that were over to eighty.
- 22:44Speaker 1: So that's only that was only thirty five total in
- 22:49Speaker 1: both major leagues combined is two forty Now the new
- 22:53Speaker 1: two sixty is too. Seventy is to seventy what two
- 22:58Speaker 1: ninety used to be?
- 22:59Speaker 2: I don't know home right, No, it's it's all messed up. Now.
- 23:04Speaker 2: I gotta say this about the trade headline real quick
- 23:07Speaker 2: because I'm just thinking about this. We saw two demotions.
- 23:10Speaker 2: I mean, Jake Berger getting sent down really surprised me
- 23:12Speaker 2: because I think he was pitching terrible. I know, give
- 23:14Speaker 2: the Grand Slam, but that was really sort of a
- 23:16Speaker 2: deadline bust. Ahmed Rosario gets injured. I guess Austin Slater
- 23:20Speaker 2: gets injured too. So I mean, rating the deadline at
- 23:23Speaker 2: the first site, I thought it was great, But watching
- 23:26Speaker 2: these emotions happen for both him and Montos, does that
- 23:29Speaker 2: change your guys grading of the deadline or is this
- 23:32Speaker 2: just things happened and this is what part of the game.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Well in in Ahmed Rosario and the Austin slaightest situation,
- 23:41Speaker 1: you can't you know, you can't figure out. You can't
- 23:44Speaker 1: figure injuries. True, So that's that's incomplete, right, I mean
- 23:48Speaker 1: you can't figure now. As Alex knows, I'm sure he
- 23:51Speaker 1: can find the Terminello's take from right after the winter
- 23:56Speaker 1: meetings or right after the first year, whenever the Mets
- 23:58Speaker 1: signed Montos, I said that to waste the money. Frankie
- 24:04Speaker 1: Montos had a blip of a good year with the
- 24:08Speaker 1: A's one year. But really his career has been this contract,
- 24:14Speaker 1: this thirty four million dollar contract he got seventeen a
- 24:17Speaker 1: year for two years. Analytics, that's what I bet you. You
- 24:23Speaker 1: got it. The eye test certainly doesn't say to sign
- 24:26Speaker 1: Frankie Montas. I bet you the analytic guy said this,
- 24:30Speaker 1: you should sign this guy. I wish the Mets had
- 24:32Speaker 1: signed Quintana and.
- 24:34Speaker 3: Oh yeah, no, yeah, I mean bringing him back. It
- 24:36Speaker 3: would have been perfect.
- 24:38Speaker 2: By the way, and he was. He was sort of
- 24:41Speaker 2: Maddy Ice if you will. He had ice in his
- 24:43Speaker 2: veins when it mattered the most. Okay, I mean it's
- 24:46Speaker 2: just that that postseason game against the Brewers. I'll never
- 24:48Speaker 2: forget that. He pitched the game of his life that night.
- 24:51Speaker 3: Yeah, and not only that, but I still remember Kintana
- 24:54Speaker 3: being very vocal back in February saying I want to
- 24:57Speaker 3: go back to the Mets. Like those five guys from
- 24:59Speaker 3: that twenty twenty four run, they've all been on the
- 25:03Speaker 3: record saying, you know, I want to come back, even
- 25:05Speaker 3: if they may not have had the room at the time.
- 25:08Speaker 3: Kintana was very vocal about that. Obviously, Iglesias was very
- 25:11Speaker 3: vocal about that. And if anything, even if Kintana was
- 25:15Speaker 3: playing more of a long reliever depth role slash occasional
- 25:20Speaker 3: spots starting role, even with these rotation issues, which surely
- 25:25Speaker 3: you wouldn't have been able to put it back on
- 25:26Speaker 3: opening day, that all this would have happened, he would
- 25:30Speaker 3: have been perfect for this ride about now. No doubt
- 25:34Speaker 3: to the Brewers for scooping him up when they did,
- 25:36Speaker 3: because he has just been phenomenal for them.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and I know it doesn't matter with Stevie Cohen
- 25:43Speaker 1: because he has so much money. But I think the
- 25:46Speaker 1: Brewer was signed up for ten million, that's right. Yeah,
- 25:51Speaker 1: So again, I'm sure of it, guys, and I an'll
- 25:56Speaker 1: know for a fact. It's just me observing from a fall.
- 26:00Speaker 1: Are Frankie Montos? Analytics rewarded Frankie Montos because the eye
- 26:05Speaker 1: test certainly didn't.
- 26:08Speaker 2: Yeah, no, And I mean look, the Yankees experiment with
- 26:11Speaker 2: him did not work either, as far as I can remember.
- 26:13Speaker 1: What did he played? He pitched like eight games in
- 26:15Speaker 1: two years, right, yeah, exactly.
- 26:17Speaker 3: It'll probably kind of them on both of your hands.
- 26:19Speaker 2: Sure it wasn't what we call glamorous. If you will
- 26:22Speaker 2: so love to see all right, I want to switch
- 26:24Speaker 2: gears here because the last couple of days, as baseball
- 26:28Speaker 2: is ramping up and we're getting ready for the fall,
- 26:30Speaker 2: you have the Giants and Jets doing a you know,
- 26:34Speaker 2: joint practice. Now, Lou, I want to get your perspective
- 26:36Speaker 2: because when the Giants and Jets were not so close
- 26:39Speaker 2: in Jersey, when the Giants I guess we're upstated and
- 26:42Speaker 2: the Jets were in him send, I remember Jet joint
- 26:45Speaker 2: practices back in the day, do you. I never remember
- 26:47Speaker 2: this being a thing until recently.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Well up until about ten years ago, ten eleven years ago,
- 26:54Speaker 1: it really wasn't a big thing in the NFL overall.
- 26:57Speaker 1: But many times when a team is playing, especially now
- 27:03Speaker 1: the Jets and Giants obviously or within a few miles
- 27:06Speaker 1: of each other, they're training camps. But just saying, like say,
- 27:11Speaker 1: I think last year the Jets played Detroit at home
- 27:14Speaker 1: at MetLife, and I think the Jets in Detroit had
- 27:17Speaker 1: had a couple of of joint practices. It's basically a
- 27:25Speaker 1: new phenomena. When I when I was, and I, like
- 27:28Speaker 1: I said, much older than you guys, that never happened.
- 27:30Speaker 1: There was no such thing as joint practices. But apparently
- 27:34Speaker 1: it was a good practice yesterday for both teams. There
- 27:37Speaker 1: was no scuffling. Usually many times in these joint practices
- 27:43Speaker 1: there's well year.
- 27:44Speaker 2: Today there was something that did happen. I guess there
- 27:46Speaker 2: was a violent thing in the second day of scrimmaging
- 27:49Speaker 2: between the two, but I don't.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Know exactly how I could see that. And I mean,
- 27:53Speaker 1: I know there's teams. There's times when in these joint
- 27:56Speaker 1: practices when teams are had going to have two days
- 28:00Speaker 1: practice back to back. I forgot. It wasn't the Jets
- 28:03Speaker 1: with the Giants. It was a couple of other teams.
- 28:06Speaker 2: I think it was Viking, these Rams or something like that.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Yeah, And the next day they decided not to have it.
- 28:12Speaker 1: They decided just to practice individually because the first day
- 28:16Speaker 1: was so you know, or so chippy.
- 28:20Speaker 2: So I know, I don't want that to carry in
- 28:23Speaker 2: the regular season. I don't think that would be right.
- 28:25Speaker 2: Although I guess they have had that in the past.
- 28:27Speaker 2: I don't remember that being a case though, But imagine,
- 28:29Speaker 2: by the way Ryan had to leave us to attend
- 28:31Speaker 2: to duties elsewhere. But I'll tell you, if they started
- 28:34Speaker 2: joining practice during the season, that would be unbelievable.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Alex, that's not gonna happen. That will not happen, but
- 28:42Speaker 1: both teams look.
- 28:43Speaker 2: I don't know why, but the idea that the preseason
- 28:49Speaker 2: first week in the preseason was more interesting to me
- 28:51Speaker 2: than the mob baseball. I never thought that would be
- 28:53Speaker 2: in August, but I was locked in the first week
- 28:55Speaker 2: of preseason. I don't know why, but it just felt
- 28:57Speaker 2: like it was.
- 29:00Speaker 1: The only one. Because the Hall of Fame game on
- 29:04Speaker 1: Thursday night between the Los Angeles Chargers and the Detroit Lions,
- 29:09Speaker 1: where virtually no one played. I did not watch a
- 29:14Speaker 1: second of the game, even though I was home, had
- 29:19Speaker 1: over six point four million people watching it, which is
- 29:24Speaker 1: almost which is what the All Star Game. That travesty
- 29:29Speaker 1: of an All Star game got like seven million from
- 29:31Speaker 1: Major League Baseball, So you were not alone in your
- 29:35Speaker 1: thirst to watch preseason football.
- 29:37Speaker 2: To put a button on the Alonso, I should really
- 29:39Speaker 2: see if Gary Cohen wants to join us, because we're
- 29:42Speaker 2: friends of them. You known him for a long time also,
- 29:44Speaker 2: I mean he would be a great guy. Or Howie
- 29:46Speaker 2: Rose to talk about Alonso because they've been there from
- 29:49Speaker 2: basically the bening beginning of this franchise, rooting for them
- 29:53Speaker 2: every day. It seems like this absolutely. That seems like
- 29:58Speaker 2: to put some feelers out and see what we could do.
- 30:01Speaker 2: But that'd be great if we could get one of
- 30:02Speaker 2: those guys on to talk about Alonzo breaking the record.
- 30:06Speaker 2: I'm sure they'd want to talk about it. That would
- 30:08Speaker 2: be great, all right, Louis, thanks for joining One Leg
- 30:11Speaker 2: Up once again.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Thank you, Alex, you have a great day, appreciate it.
- 30:15Speaker 1: And thanks Ryan. It's always good to talk to him. Also,
