- 1:42Speaker 3: Paul Beaten in Jerusalem In our last story, Paul said
- 1:47Speaker 3: goodbye to the Ephesian church. He knew that danger awaited
- 1:51Speaker 3: him in Jerusalem. The threat of danger and death was present.
- 1:55Speaker 3: But Paul was determined to preach the gospel to his kin.
- 1:59Speaker 3: So with great tears, Paul left Ephesus to Jerusalem. Now
- 2:04Speaker 3: we see Paul taken up by an angry mob of Jews.
- 2:07Speaker 3: He is beaten and nearly killed, but saved ultimately by
- 2:11Speaker 3: his Roman citizenship, inspired by the book of Acts.
- 2:18Speaker 2: I'm so glad you joined us on the Bible in

- 3:08Speaker 2: That's JackGraham.org. JackGraham.org. In our last episode, we heard how
- 3:15Speaker 2: Paul brought a young man back to life after the
- 3:18Speaker 2: youth fell from a third-story window. God continued to work
- 3:22Speaker 2: through this great man in both his words and the
- 3:24Speaker 2: signs he performed in the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 3:28Speaker 2: We also heard Paul's farewell to the church at Ephesus,
- 3:31Speaker 2: which he dearly loved. Today we'll find Paul in Jerusalem,
- 3:36Speaker 2: together with the church there, led by Jesus' own brother, James,
- 3:41Speaker 2: who gives wise counsel to Paul. Despite his best efforts
- 3:44Speaker 2: to make peace, the Jewish religious establishment in Asia will
- 3:48Speaker 2: stir up hatred towards this godly man. nearly killing the
- 3:52Speaker 2: Apostle Paul. So, let's listen now to this reading from
- 3:56Speaker 2: the book of Acts.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Paul went into Jerusalem under the cover of night. He
- 4:01Speaker 3: and Luke wandered in through the city gates, hoods over
- 4:04Speaker 3: their faces and torches snuffed. It was Passover, and the
- 4:08Speaker 3: city was still filled with activity. Paul and Luke weaved
- 4:12Speaker 3: through groups of people, avoiding fires and torches. Paul looked
- 4:16Speaker 3: around the city. It had been a very long time
- 4:18Speaker 3: since he had been in Jerusalem. The sweet spring air
- 4:22Speaker 3: blew through the city and Paul caught a glimpse of
- 4:24Speaker 3: the large temple looming in the distance. The temple, God's
- 4:29Speaker 3: holy dwelling. Paul smiled. He was thankful that now, thanks
- 4:34Speaker 3: to Jesus, God dwelled in the hearts of men and
- 4:36Speaker 3: women who believed. Luke and Paul made their way to
- 4:40Speaker 3: the home of James, Jesus' brother. He greeted them warmly
- 4:44Speaker 3: and the three of them shared a meal with the elders.
- 4:47Speaker 3: The church in Jerusalem was thriving under the leadership of James. However,
- 4:51Speaker 3: the Jews were becoming increasingly more angry by the day.
- 4:55Speaker 3: They are all zealous for the law, James said. And
- 4:59Speaker 3: they speak about you quite often, Paul. Even I have
- 5:02Speaker 3: heard stories from them. They say you tell them not
- 5:05Speaker 3: to circumcise their children and to forsake Moses. James took
- 5:10Speaker 3: a sip from his cup. There was clear concern on
- 5:13Speaker 3: his face for keeping Paul safe. To the Jews, Paul
- 5:16Speaker 3: was more than a threat. He was the best among them,
- 5:19Speaker 3: and he turned to Jesus. If Paul, a Pharisee of Pharisees,
- 5:24Speaker 3: could convert, then anyone could. So Paul represented vulnerability. They
- 5:29Speaker 3: will hear that you have come, James said. You must
- 5:33Speaker 3: do as I say if you want to stay alive.
- 5:35Speaker 3: You will go to the temple and cleanse yourself. You
- 5:38Speaker 3: will take part in the ceremonies so that they can
- 5:40Speaker 3: clearly see you are not a menace to them. It
- 5:43Speaker 3: was the best plan they had. If Paul remained hidden
- 5:47Speaker 3: in the city for too long, it would only make
- 5:49Speaker 3: him seem more guilty. So the next day Paul went
- 5:53Speaker 3: into the temple for the ceremony of purification. For seven
- 5:56Speaker 3: days he went through the old Jewish customs and attended
- 5:59Speaker 3: the teachings of the synagogues. To Paul it was a
- 6:02Speaker 3: refreshing reminder of how much Jesus had done for him.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Every ceremonial law written in the Law of Moses pointed
- 6:10Speaker 3: towards the greater cleansing of Christ. So Paul went through
- 6:14Speaker 3: the ceremonies joyfully. for they pointed towards a greater truth.
- 6:19Speaker 3: Seven days passed and Paul was nearly completed paying homage
- 6:22Speaker 3: to the Jewish traditions. That was until the Jews from
- 6:26Speaker 3: Asia came to Jerusalem. The group of Asian Jews had
- 6:30Speaker 3: come to Jerusalem for the Passover. However, when they saw Paul,
- 6:34Speaker 3: all they could think about was murder. Paul silently sat
- 6:38Speaker 3: in the courtyard watching the birds glide over the temple.
- 6:42Speaker 3: All was peaceful. until Paul received a swift blow to
- 6:45Speaker 3: the back of his head. Paul fell forward into a fountain.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Before he could get up, a strong hand held the
- 6:51Speaker 3: back of his head down into the water. Paul flailed
- 6:54Speaker 3: his arms, trying to break free. The men threw him
- 6:57Speaker 3: out of the water and grabbed him by the hair.
- 7:00Speaker 3: They dragged him into the middle of the courtyard. At
- 7:02Speaker 3: this point, many people stopped to watch what was happening.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Men of Israel, the men said. This is the man
- 7:10Speaker 3: who has been teaching people to abandon our law in
- 7:12Speaker 3: this temple. Gasps and chuckles filled the air. The Jews
- 7:18Speaker 3: from Asia stirred up the crowd and formed a mob
- 7:20Speaker 3: that stormed out of the temple with Paul being drugged
- 7:23Speaker 3: by his hair. Once the gates closed behind them, they
- 7:27Speaker 3: kicked him into a wall. Paul was surrounded. His back
- 7:31Speaker 3: was against the wall and a sea of angry glares
- 7:33Speaker 3: were before him. They looked at Paul like hungry wolves
- 7:37Speaker 3: ready to grab the throat. Paul knew that death was
- 7:40Speaker 3: a possibility coming to Jerusalem, so he breathed deeply and
- 7:44Speaker 3: chose to accept whatever the Lord had for him. The
- 7:48Speaker 3: chief judge of Jerusalem got word that there was an
- 7:51Speaker 3: angry mob forming outside the temple. He wasted no time
- 7:55Speaker 3: and had centurions sent down at once. The soldiers ran
- 7:59Speaker 3: down to where Paul was backed into a corner being
- 8:01Speaker 3: beaten to death. The mob was shouting out accusations towards Paul,
- 8:06Speaker 3: so no centurion could get a good idea of what
- 8:08Speaker 3: he was in trouble for. They acted quickly, for Paul
- 8:12Speaker 3: was receiving the fury of over a hundred men. The
- 8:15Speaker 3: soldiers broke up the angry mob and dispersed them. Then
- 8:18Speaker 3: they bound Paul and took him to the judge. The
- 8:21Speaker 3: crowd followed, shouting lies and spinning deceit. The courtroom doors
- 8:26Speaker 3: swung open and the judge was surprised by a half-dead
- 8:29Speaker 3: man in chains, followed by a hundred angry Jews. They
- 8:33Speaker 3: all shouted and spat in Paul's direction. However, Paul kept
- 8:36Speaker 3: his head down. What has this man done? the judge asked. However,
- 8:41Speaker 3: he could not get a good answer, for all of
- 8:44Speaker 3: them were speaking at once. Some said he was a sorcerer.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Others said he corrupted their children. Others said he had
- 8:50Speaker 3: violated the law of God and the law of the land.
- 8:54Speaker 3: None of these were true, but the judge had no
- 8:56Speaker 3: way of knowing. The soldiers were guarding Paul to make
- 8:59Speaker 3: sure he was not killed by the mob behind them.
- 9:02Speaker 3: The judge was growing flustered and ordered for Paul to
- 9:05Speaker 3: be taken to the barracks. As Paul was being taken away,
- 9:08Speaker 3: he whispered calmly to the judge, May I say something
- 9:12Speaker 3: to you? The judge was perplexed. You can speak Greek?
- 9:16Speaker 3: I thought you were the Egyptian assassin everyone has been
- 9:19Speaker 3: talking about. Who are you? I am a Jew from Tarsus,
- 9:23Speaker 3: Paul replied. I beg you, please permit me to speak
- 9:27Speaker 3: with the people. The judge nodded and motioned him forward
- 9:30Speaker 3: to the podium. Paul leaned against the large piece of wood.
- 9:34Speaker 3: Someone had shattered his right knee. He was in excruciating pain,
- 9:38Speaker 3: but he must speak. There was a great hush among
- 9:41Speaker 3: the crowd, and Paul began to speak in the Hebrew
- 9:43Speaker 3: language to his brothers and sisters. He told them about
- 9:46Speaker 3: his upbringing and time as a Pharisee. He told them
- 9:50Speaker 3: about his zeal for persecuting the church. He even told
- 9:53Speaker 3: them about the Lord meeting him on the road to Damascus.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Paul gave a heartfelt plea to the people beforehand. a
- 10:00Speaker 3: plea to understand the love God has for them, a
- 10:04Speaker 3: plea to consider the sacrifice of Jesus.' I held the
- 10:08Speaker 3: robes while people stoned Stephen,' Paul said.' I know the
- 10:12Speaker 3: zeal you hold. It is why I left Jerusalem.' Before
- 10:17Speaker 3: Paul could speak again, they raised their voices and called
- 10:20Speaker 3: for his death. They shouted and threw off their cloaks
- 10:23Speaker 3: to attack him. They flung rocks and dust in the air.
- 10:27Speaker 3: The judge did not understand Hebrew. Therefore, he did not
- 10:30Speaker 3: understand what Paul was speaking about. So the judge assumed
- 10:33Speaker 3: Paul must be guilty to rile up a crowd to
- 10:36Speaker 3: such rage. He ordered for Paul to be flogged. So
- 10:40Speaker 3: Paul was stripped naked and tied to a post. Paul
- 10:43Speaker 3: could hear the whips being tested behind him. He tensed
- 10:47Speaker 3: his whole body and prepared himself for what was about
- 10:50Speaker 3: to take place. Then Paul remembered something. Paul was born
- 10:55Speaker 3: in Tarsus. He was a Roman citizen by birth. Paul
- 10:59Speaker 3: turned his head to the centurion and asked, Is it
- 11:02Speaker 3: lawful to flog a Roman citizen without a hearing? The
- 11:05Speaker 3: soldier stopped in his tracks, and Paul was immediately released
- 11:08Speaker 3: from his chains. Yet the trial was not over. Paul
- 11:12Speaker 3: would have to sit before a Roman court. Paul would
- 11:15Speaker 3: with the Pharisees. If that didn't go well, he may
- 11:19Speaker 3: even have to be before Caesar himself.
- 11:25Speaker 2: As we hear God's word today, we find Paul and
- 11:28Speaker 2: Luke back in Jerusalem. This place had been Paul's home
- 11:32Speaker 2: for years, and now after a long journey, he was home.
- 11:35Speaker 2: But things were different now. He was no longer a
- 11:38Speaker 2: part of the religious elite. He was a man changed
- 11:41Speaker 2: by Christ, by the power of the gospel working in
- 11:44Speaker 2: his life. Paul was welcomed into the home of James, Jesus'
- 11:48Speaker 2: own brother. He too, like Paul, had once rejected Jesus,
- 11:53Speaker 2: but now because of the resurrection, Jesus' brother, his half-brother actually,
- 11:59Speaker 2: is leader of the church in Jerusalem. He told Paul
- 12:02Speaker 2: of the many Jews who had come to faith in Christ.
- 12:05Speaker 2: These Jewish Christians were certainly grateful to have Paul with them,
- 12:09Speaker 2: not least of all because he brought with him an
- 12:11Speaker 2: offering for the church in Jerusalem that he had gathered
- 12:13Speaker 2: from Gentile churches. At the same time, these Jewish Christians
- 12:18Speaker 2: were a bit suspicious of Paul. They still observed all
- 12:22Speaker 2: the Jewish laws, but word had come to them that
- 12:24Speaker 2: Paul was telling Gentiles, non-Jews, and Jews alike to abandon
- 12:29Speaker 2: Jewish traditions, including circumcision. This was only a half-truth. Paul
- 12:36Speaker 2: did not call Gentiles to adhere to Jewish customs because
- 12:39Speaker 2: they had a new identity in Christ. They are now
- 12:43Speaker 2: a part of God's eternal family. But he certainly wasn't
- 12:47Speaker 2: calling on Jewish believers to abandon their Jewish customs. This
- 12:51Speaker 2: was surely a tactic of the enemy to sow division
- 12:54Speaker 2: and disunity in the church. And now Paul had an
- 12:57Speaker 2: opportunity to eliminate these rumors and show his unity with
- 13:01Speaker 2: Jewish believers. With this in mind, James wisely counseled Paul
- 13:06Speaker 2: to join four Jewish men who were going to fulfill
- 13:10Speaker 2: a vow in a ceremony of purification. Paul would not
- 13:14Speaker 2: only take part in the ceremony— but he would help
- 13:16Speaker 2: cover their expenses for the process. Paul did just exactly
- 13:21Speaker 2: as James advised and participated in the rites of Jewish purification.
- 13:27Speaker 2: The ceremony actually pointed people to Christ and what Christ
- 13:31Speaker 2: had already accomplished. Religious rites and traditions do not cleanse
- 13:36Speaker 2: from sin. Only Christ can do that. And Paul knew this.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Paul understood that there was nothing inherently wrong with the
- 13:43Speaker 2: customs but they certainly did not save or even help
- 13:46Speaker 2: to save. Paul then joins with these Jewish believers as
- 13:51Speaker 2: an alignment of their faith and Christian fellowship. He was
- 13:55Speaker 2: practicing what he had always preached, words he wrote to
- 13:59Speaker 2: the believers in Rome, reminding them not to be a
- 14:01Speaker 2: stumbling block to other believers, but to do what leads
- 14:05Speaker 2: to peace and mutual edification, that is, building up. Paul's
- 14:10Speaker 2: biggest problem, was not with Jewish Christians but with unbelievers,
- 14:15Speaker 2: both Jews and Gentiles, but in particular unbelieving Jews who
- 14:20Speaker 2: came from Asia and seeing Paul in the temple began
- 14:23Speaker 2: to shout accusations at him and stir up the crowds
- 14:26Speaker 2: against him. We're told that the whole city turned against
- 14:30Speaker 2: Paul and he was dragged out of the temple into
- 14:32Speaker 2: the streets where the mob began to beat him. Paul
- 14:35Speaker 2: certainly must have thought this was the end of his life.
- 14:39Speaker 2: But the chief judge in Jerusalem sent soldiers and centurions
- 14:42Speaker 2: to break up the fight, to break up the mob.
- 14:45Speaker 2: Paul was rescued just in time. I imagine he had
- 14:49Speaker 2: never been so glad to have been arrested. At least
- 14:52Speaker 2: now he would be in safe hands for a while
- 14:54Speaker 2: and he would get his day in court. Before he
- 14:57Speaker 2: could be taken away to a cell, Paul managed to
- 15:00Speaker 2: speak to the judge who was surprised that Paul spoke Greek.
- 15:04Speaker 2: He asked for permission to speak to the crowd and
- 15:06Speaker 2: the judge allowed it. Then in the Hebrew language, Paul
- 15:10Speaker 2: began to give his own testimony to the Jews. He
- 15:13Speaker 2: told them of how he once persecuted the followers of Jesus,
- 15:17Speaker 2: but how the Lord had appeared to him on the
- 15:19Speaker 2: road to Damascus and saved him. He knew how zealous
- 15:23Speaker 2: that these people were, and he knew that his witness
- 15:26Speaker 2: could lead to his own death, but that did not
- 15:28Speaker 2: stop the apostle Paul. Because of Christ, he was unstoppable.
- 15:33Speaker 2: He continued to bear witness to what God had done
- 15:36Speaker 2: in his life, and how he called him to leave
- 15:38Speaker 2: Jerusalem and go to the Gentiles, to go to the
- 15:41Speaker 2: nations to share the good news. What is remarkable about
- 15:45Speaker 2: this is that Paul had been rescued from danger, but
- 15:49Speaker 2: for the sake of the gospel, he stepped right back
- 15:52Speaker 2: into the fight, telling his story of salvation in Christ.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Some might call him a freak or a fool, but
- 15:59Speaker 2: he was a fool for Christ's sake. He would never
- 16:02Speaker 2: stop telling the wonderful things that Christ had done in
- 16:04Speaker 2: his life. The crowd grew angry once again upon hearing
- 16:08Speaker 2: his words, and we read in Acts 22, 22 these words.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Then they raised their voices and said, Away with such
- 16:16Speaker 2: a fellow from the earth, for he should not be
- 16:19Speaker 2: allowed to live. Their shouts are reminiscent of what the
- 16:23Speaker 2: crowd said at the trial of Jesus when they said,
- 16:25Speaker 2: Crucify him, crucify him. Paul was certainly identified with Christ,
- 16:32Speaker 2: not only in life, but in suffering and rejection by
- 16:35Speaker 2: his own people. The judge, who could not understand Paul's
- 16:39Speaker 2: words and saw the crowd's reaction, ordered that he be flogged.
- 16:44Speaker 2: But Paul, knowing his rights as a citizen of Rome
- 16:47Speaker 2: since he was born in Tarsus, appealed on the basis
- 16:50Speaker 2: of his Roman citizenship for a just, fair hearing. This
- 16:55Speaker 2: wise action by Paul meant that he would stand before
- 16:57Speaker 2: a court and will hear about his trial before the
- 17:00Speaker 2: council of Jewish leaders the next time. Dear God, we
- 17:04Speaker 2: thank you for the example of Paul's courage and faithfulness.
- 17:08Speaker 2: May we also be courageous, bold, and brave as we
- 17:11Speaker 2: share our faith. May we never allow the circumstances or
- 17:15Speaker 2: consequences of our actions for Christ to stop us from
- 17:20Speaker 2: being bold witnesses for him. God, fill us with your
- 17:24Speaker 2: spirit that we may speak of your love and your
- 17:26Speaker 2: grace in our lives and never stop until you come
- 17:30Speaker 2: for us. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for listening
