- 0:43Speaker 2: Hello, ladies and gentlemen.
- 0:44Speaker 4: This is Carl Lee, and uh, this is a rare
- 0:48Speaker 4: day that me and Hollis Lewis are the two gentlemen
- 0:53Speaker 4: in the building. And miss Odie she is She's not
- 0:57Speaker 4: here today, She's out of town and deserving. So Hollis, Yes, sir,
- 1:04Speaker 4: I'm gonna start with the I'm gonna start with the
- 1:06Speaker 4: whole soccer thing.
- 1:09Speaker 2: It is. It has caught my attention.
- 1:12Speaker 4: Because of I don't know, the athleticism that I see,
- 1:16Speaker 4: the endurance that I see. But there's but I wait
- 1:22Speaker 4: on your comment and then I'm gonna come back with
- 1:24Speaker 4: one of my one of my negatives about it.
- 1:26Speaker 5: But you know, I think it's one of them things
- 1:29Speaker 5: that like, it's definitely like if you grew up in
- 1:31Speaker 5: a time where we grew up, it was you know,
- 1:33Speaker 5: it was football, basketball, baseball, right track even and even
- 1:37Speaker 5: tennis you can probably throw in there. So we didn't
- 1:39Speaker 5: grow up watching soccer, didn't grow up playing soccer, and
- 1:42Speaker 5: none of that. But I think to see it up
- 1:44Speaker 5: close and personal, I went to, you know, a couple
- 1:47Speaker 5: of Westervirginian State women's soccer games, a couple you see
- 1:51Speaker 5: men's soccer games, and it's just elite athleticism like that.
- 1:55Speaker 5: These guys are not you know, maybe what we used
- 1:58Speaker 5: to make fun of back.
- 1:59Speaker 2: In the day, right, ain't them guys? These?
- 2:01Speaker 5: I mean when you talk about the footwork and like
- 2:03Speaker 5: I said, the speed and agility to being able to
- 2:06Speaker 5: get pick the ball out of the air, you know,
- 2:08Speaker 5: these are legit, you know athletes, and you can look
- 2:13Speaker 5: at them and you can see them kind of like
- 2:15Speaker 5: at different times they're they're they're walking, so you can
- 2:19Speaker 5: kind of make it if you look at that and
- 2:21Speaker 5: you try to judge that and say, okay, well yeah,
- 2:23Speaker 5: you don't have to really be in great shape to
- 2:25Speaker 5: do it. But the amount of time that they're out
- 2:29Speaker 5: there and the number of up and down the field
- 2:33Speaker 5: and the field I'm thinking if I'm not, if I'm correct,
- 2:36Speaker 5: it's just a little bit over a football field, I believe. So, yeah,
- 2:41Speaker 5: just a little bit over a football field. So imagine
- 2:45Speaker 5: going up and down the football field. What, yeah, fifty times, No,
- 2:52Speaker 5: it's probably more than that. It's like basketball, like they
- 2:54Speaker 5: keep those sort of similar stat as far as possession,
- 2:56Speaker 5: shots and different things of that nature. So it's you know,
- 3:00Speaker 5: it's it's a it's a it's a good game once
- 3:02Speaker 5: you give it a chance.
- 3:03Speaker 2: What what is what is it?
- 3:05Speaker 4: What is the draw to you from you to watch it?
- 3:09Speaker 4: What is the what is it what catches your attention?
- 3:12Speaker 5: My kids played soccer, okay, But also I would say,
- 3:15Speaker 5: you know what, I would say it started there because
- 3:17Speaker 5: I just I actually had to like sit down and
- 3:19Speaker 5: watch it. So after watching it, like you can just
- 3:23Speaker 5: see the skills. I think for me, I enjoyed probably
- 3:26Speaker 5: the even more than just the shots, just the dribbling
- 3:30Speaker 5: in between with your feet, like right, so it has
- 3:32Speaker 5: they like maneuvering traffic, maneuvering one that we've just seen
- 3:36Speaker 5: a head shot right now, maneuvering between defenders and and
- 3:41Speaker 5: and the pass, and it's and like once you get
- 3:43Speaker 5: the birds eye of view, it's it's very similar to
- 3:46Speaker 5: basketball to how they're cutting and sitting up, placing and
- 3:49Speaker 5: different things of that nature.
- 3:50Speaker 2: So yeah, it's.
- 3:53Speaker 4: I know for me when I watch it, like for
- 3:57Speaker 4: a long time, all I could see was people running around,
- 4:01Speaker 4: and then you couldn't really see quote like maybe a plan.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Uh And And I think if you haven't.
- 4:09Speaker 4: Sit and really kind of watch it and see the
- 4:12Speaker 4: thought processes of what's really taking place, you might not
- 4:16Speaker 4: be able to enjoy it. But I think once you
- 4:19Speaker 4: realize what's what's taking place and what these guys are
- 4:22Speaker 4: trying to do, I think it's a. I think it's
- 4:25Speaker 4: just a it's amazing. I don't think now if I
- 4:29Speaker 4: were to go back, and the question would be would
- 4:33Speaker 4: I play it, I don't. I don't know if I would,
- 4:38Speaker 4: and and and I don't. I can't really even say,
- 4:41Speaker 4: like necessarily why I wouldn't. But if you had a
- 4:44Speaker 4: choice with that versus football, what would what would you
- 4:48Speaker 4: pick in?
- 4:48Speaker 5: I mean I would I would definitely pick football, but
- 4:50Speaker 5: I would you would want to play as long as
- 4:52Speaker 5: it's not conflicting with like football, I would definitely give
- 4:55Speaker 5: it a shot. And like again, that's a good thing
- 4:57Speaker 5: about soccer is that, you know, like basketball, all you
- 5:01Speaker 5: particularly at the youth level, you'll have you know, multiple seasons,
- 5:04Speaker 5: so there's a fall, spring, summer, winter. So I would
- 5:08Speaker 5: have definitely liked to play. You know, I only knew,
- 5:12Speaker 5: Like really, I ain't gonna say they only knew, but
- 5:14Speaker 5: I know a couple of football players, like, for example,
- 5:16Speaker 5: Ryan Switcher when he was young he played soccer. God
- 5:20Speaker 5: played with high school Rick Sales he played soccer, and
- 5:23Speaker 5: they were both pretty good athletes, had all, you know,
- 5:26Speaker 5: really good feet, working different things of that nature. So
- 5:28Speaker 5: I think it's definitely some transferable skills to other sports.
- 5:31Speaker 4: All right, Well, I know you had a couple of
- 5:33Speaker 4: topics that you would you had talked about on the
- 5:35Speaker 4: phone earlier, so you might let's let's roll with some
- 5:38Speaker 4: of those.
- 5:38Speaker 2: I just wanted to get that out of the way
- 5:40Speaker 2: for sure.
- 5:40Speaker 5: Yeah, we have a few Marshall students Marshall University athletes rather,
- 5:46Speaker 5: and they are suing the n C DOUBLEA to play
- 5:49Speaker 5: an additional year, so they have completed their four years
- 5:54Speaker 5: of eligibility and they want an extra year. So what
- 5:57Speaker 5: happened was this past I think when the last couple
- 6:00Speaker 5: of months or whatever, the NCAA pass what's known as
- 6:04Speaker 5: like a five for five, so you get five seasons
- 6:08Speaker 5: to play five so you get five years to play
- 6:10Speaker 5: five seasons. So they have eliminated like the red shirt,
- 6:12Speaker 5: the gray shirt, and even some medical exemptions, although there
- 6:16Speaker 5: are some exceptions within that. So essentially what happens now
- 6:19Speaker 5: is that you get five years to play five seasons,
- 6:22Speaker 5: so essentially you can play five years in collegiate sports. However,
- 6:27Speaker 5: the rule I don't believe the rule was retroactive. So
- 6:31Speaker 5: for example, those students who graduated in twenty twenty two,
- 6:35Speaker 5: it's twenty twenty six, so if you completed that four
- 6:38Speaker 5: years of eligibility, then you're technically quote unquote done. Well,
- 6:43Speaker 5: they're arguing that, you know, essentially, I guess they're arguing
- 6:46Speaker 5: that it should be retroactive and that they should have
- 6:49Speaker 5: one more year, so they what should technically be done
- 6:53Speaker 5: in twenty twenty seven.
- 6:55Speaker 2: So that's the lawsuit.
- 6:56Speaker 4: All right, I got two I don't know if you
- 7:00Speaker 4: can actually answer them, but you could maybe have a.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Side on it.
- 7:07Speaker 4: At one point in time, you know, we were talking
- 7:10Speaker 4: about you know, a four year college and you you had,
- 7:13Speaker 4: you had you could do five years and still but
- 7:16Speaker 4: you can only play four years?
- 7:18Speaker 2: You had the red shirt and then yes, yes.
- 7:22Speaker 4: How how are you where does the academics play in
- 7:27Speaker 4: in that in that role? How do you what if
- 7:32Speaker 4: I what if I'm not maybe I haven't completed my school?
- 7:37Speaker 5: Okay, what's which standpoint are you talking about? Because you
- 7:39Speaker 5: can argue this, you can argue on both side fire
- 7:41Speaker 5: bar sides. Yeah, so you could argue that, hey, I
- 7:44Speaker 5: need you know, the five years will give me extra
- 7:46Speaker 5: time to complete my undergrad or you could say I
- 7:48Speaker 5: could possibly complete an undergrad and a graduate degree within
- 7:51Speaker 5: that time, So it could work out either way, right.
- 7:55Speaker 4: Yes, okay? Do you what is your thought process on
- 8:00Speaker 4: five years with no injury or anything? Just a straight
- 8:03Speaker 4: like like I'm gonna play four, now, I'm gonna now,
- 8:06Speaker 4: I'm gonna ask for.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Five, like cannot play five? Well? I think there should
- 8:10Speaker 2: it be? I think so? I don't.
- 8:14Speaker 5: I mean, because for example, if you're you know, you're
- 8:16Speaker 5: essentially playing to your twenty three so you if you
- 8:19Speaker 5: if you come in in seventeen eighteen, you'll play till
- 8:23Speaker 5: you're twenty three. Let's say, right, so you get that
- 8:26Speaker 5: extra year, and I think that you know, you kind
- 8:29Speaker 5: of already getting in anyway if you had a red shirt,
- 8:31Speaker 5: although you're not competing. And I think the thought process
- 8:33Speaker 5: is to try to eliminate like all the transfer and
- 8:37Speaker 5: just eliminate people getting around the rules because it was
- 8:40Speaker 5: some kids who were staying in college for like seven
- 8:42Speaker 5: eight years, you know what I mean. So they're trying
- 8:44Speaker 5: to condense it in that way. It don't matter if
- 8:47Speaker 5: you move your your clock starts. If you and JUCO,
- 8:51Speaker 5: your clock starts. So if you spend that two years
- 8:53Speaker 5: in JUCO, that means you only gonna have so much
- 8:56Speaker 5: time once you get to you know where you're going.
- 8:58Speaker 4: But I don't think that you should get any more
- 9:00Speaker 4: more than the total four.
- 9:01Speaker 2: You think it should be limited? Yeah, to me, I don't.
- 9:06Speaker 4: I can't see, okay, because here's my issue. I'm coming in,
- 9:13Speaker 4: I'm coming into college, coming straight out of high school.
- 9:18Speaker 4: You're getting ready to be in your fifth year, and
- 9:22Speaker 4: let's say there might be six or seven players that
- 9:26Speaker 4: are are getting ready to be in their fifth year,
- 9:30Speaker 4: and if even the possible, if they can squeeze into six, like,
- 9:34Speaker 4: how does that?
- 9:36Speaker 5: I guess the thought process is like, well, heck, you're
- 9:38Speaker 5: already there five years anyway. Like so if you take
- 9:40Speaker 5: the red shir excuse me, red shirt, you're gonna be
- 9:43Speaker 5: here five years anyway.
- 9:45Speaker 4: I don't think that that should make you eligible to
- 9:48Speaker 4: be that because just because it's gonna take you five years,
- 9:52Speaker 4: because it took me more than five to get mine.
- 9:55Speaker 2: So do I get sick? I'm not sure.
- 9:57Speaker 5: We ain't talking about necessarily, We're not talking about academics here.
- 10:00Speaker 2: We're talking about just playing. So you don't think they
- 10:03Speaker 2: should have five years on.
- 10:04Speaker 4: The field, No, I mean it's it's it's okay, So
- 10:11Speaker 4: how does that play for your draft?
- 10:13Speaker 2: Okay?
- 10:13Speaker 4: So, like let's say if you're trying to get you know,
- 10:15Speaker 4: you're a football player, you you you you're not going
- 10:18Speaker 4: to go in the draft on the year that you're
- 10:20Speaker 4: supposed to, and then you're gonna wait and try to
- 10:24Speaker 4: go the following year, and and and could there be
- 10:28Speaker 4: better quarterbacks? Could there be better dbs in that next class?
- 10:32Speaker 4: I mean, all of those kind of things could be
- 10:34Speaker 4: an issue to me too, I just don't like. I
- 10:39Speaker 4: just don't like. I don't like the idea of the age,
- 10:46Speaker 4: the maturity piece of the athlete that is playing in
- 10:51Speaker 4: his fifth year versus a freshman or even a sophomore.
- 10:57Speaker 2: I just I just don't I understand that.
- 11:00Speaker 5: I mean, I get that, but I guess what's happening
- 11:02Speaker 5: now is like again, you got some people who been
- 11:05Speaker 5: in college six seven years.
- 11:07Speaker 2: So it's like that. You don't want that either.
- 11:09Speaker 5: You don't want somebody who took a red shirt, then
- 11:12Speaker 5: played three years, then had a medical red shirt, then
- 11:15Speaker 5: played another two years. Now they're in a six to
- 11:17Speaker 5: seven year of college. So this condenses all that to say, hey,
- 11:21Speaker 5: you got really accept you know, some exception, you only
- 11:25Speaker 5: got this much time.
- 11:26Speaker 4: But this much time is academic. It doesn't it should
- 11:31Speaker 4: not be, you know, talk academics right out the window. Well,
- 11:33Speaker 4: we don't care about it. I mean, let's be honest.
- 11:36Speaker 4: Well I do agree with you. I do agree with you,
- 11:38Speaker 4: But like for all these times, all this pressure that
- 11:42Speaker 4: that I can remember about being you know, you gotta
- 11:49Speaker 4: be academically eligible, you gotta be this, you got to
- 11:51Speaker 4: take this classic.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Nobody said anything.
- 11:55Speaker 5: And when you heard the kids being dismissed from a
- 11:57Speaker 5: team for academics in years, and you got to look
- 11:59Speaker 5: at it from the kids perspective, Like, you know, I
- 12:02Speaker 5: can earn, So I got five years to earn. So
- 12:05Speaker 5: even if I'm not quite a pro player, I'm just
- 12:07Speaker 5: a good college player. Maybe I can earn money for
- 12:10Speaker 5: that entire five years. So that gives me an extra
- 12:13Speaker 5: year not only just to play, but to earn. And
- 12:16Speaker 5: it gives you know, maybe it's some incentive for you know,
- 12:19Speaker 5: to stay around the program a little bit longer. If
- 12:21Speaker 5: I know I have a this finite time tonally do it,
- 12:25Speaker 5: so I don't. It's sort of a wash to me.
- 12:29Speaker 5: It's not necessarily a good thing, not a bad thing.
- 12:31Speaker 5: It's just like I said, it's it's like you just wrangle.
- 12:34Speaker 4: It for you You're you're like, Okay, whatever y'all decide
- 12:37Speaker 4: is going to is.
- 12:38Speaker 2: What it is.
- 12:39Speaker 5: I think, like I said, I think it could just
- 12:40Speaker 5: be a pathway to like know that, you know, I
- 12:44Speaker 5: can't all that moveing I was doing. That may end
- 12:48Speaker 5: up hurting me because I don't have time to do that.
- 12:50Speaker 5: Like I'm not gonna get a graduate. I don't think
- 12:51Speaker 5: you can get like a graduate transfer. If I get injured,
- 12:54Speaker 5: that hurts if I, you know, I don't get a
- 12:56Speaker 5: red shirt. So maybe the incentive is like, hey, I'm
- 12:58Speaker 5: going to just stay around WV as long as possible
- 13:01Speaker 5: instead of just hopping up and leaving.
- 13:04Speaker 2: You know.
- 13:07Speaker 4: I just I don't know, man, I just feel like,
- 13:10Speaker 4: to be honest, I feel like we're doing too much,
- 13:13Speaker 4: you know, I think the you know, and again i'm.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Self appointed old school.
- 13:23Speaker 4: I just really think that I don't think that there
- 13:26Speaker 4: should be there's a need for any additional time to
- 13:32Speaker 4: play in college, and to play in college now what
- 13:37Speaker 4: you do academically be there ten years, I don't care.
- 13:41Speaker 2: But I just don't see the athletic side of it.
- 13:48Speaker 4: I don't see how you can get past any more
- 13:50Speaker 4: than four years, maybe a fifth year, if you didn't
- 13:54Speaker 4: play a season. I just don't. I I just don't see.
- 13:58Speaker 4: And again I understand, especially if you're trying to get
- 14:03Speaker 4: to the league and you maybe need an extra year
- 14:06Speaker 4: or thinking that you need the extra year.
- 14:10Speaker 2: I don't. I don't.
- 14:12Speaker 4: You know, again, I'll say it this way, which it
- 14:14Speaker 4: sounds terrible. Nobody gave me an extra year.
- 14:18Speaker 2: And I know that's not.
- 14:19Speaker 4: I know that sounds bad, but like I just I
- 14:23Speaker 4: don't feel like.
- 14:26Speaker 2: It just doesn't make sense to me.
- 14:27Speaker 5: Well, I mean, like I said, it's financial repercussions. It's
- 14:31Speaker 5: it's a pathway. For example, if you did graduate college
- 14:34Speaker 5: in three years, you can like stay the extra two
- 14:37Speaker 5: still play, get it paid for. You can get your
- 14:39Speaker 5: master's degree in that time. So I think it's just
- 14:42Speaker 5: a net positive like I said. And you can earn,
- 14:45Speaker 5: so it's an extra you get to turn in il. So,
- 14:49Speaker 5: like I said, I just you know, I don't think
- 14:52Speaker 5: it's a bad thing. And like I said, I think
- 14:54Speaker 5: on the other end, it's one of the situations where heck,
- 14:56Speaker 5: we rather have you stay five than seven, you know
- 15:01Speaker 5: what I mean.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Yeah, Okay, okay, you got we got some we got
- 15:06Speaker 2: some Marshall stuff you got for us. Yeah, that was
- 15:08Speaker 2: that was the mark, the Marshall. Yeah, we got.
- 15:11Speaker 5: We're talking about like I know, we've we've uh we
- 15:14Speaker 5: haven't really been talking about it, but there's a ton
- 15:17Speaker 5: of movement going We talk about. Movement is transfer uh
- 15:21Speaker 5: you know far as trades in the NBA. Uh yanchis Tacobo.
- 15:25Speaker 5: He got traded from Milwaukee to Miami, Junon Brown got
- 15:29Speaker 5: traded from the Celtics. Yeah, Celtics to the seventies six ers,
- 15:34Speaker 5: and we got Lebron James out there now again Lebron,
- 15:38Speaker 5: he he just said he's not gonna resign. He hasn't
- 15:41Speaker 5: resigned with the Lakers. No, I mean he won't. But
- 15:45Speaker 5: I think he's out there fishing to see where he's
- 15:47Speaker 5: going to go. There's been rumors that he might team
- 15:49Speaker 5: up with Jenden Brown in Philly. He might go to
- 15:52Speaker 5: Golden State, may go back to Cleveland. You know, like
- 15:57Speaker 5: I said, the NBA is doing a good job of
- 16:00Speaker 5: keeping themselves in the headline with all this movement and trading.
- 16:04Speaker 5: So what do you think about just the when we
- 16:07Speaker 5: talk about movement, I mean, you know we these are
- 16:10Speaker 5: established players. These are players who won championships, you know,
- 16:13Speaker 5: the grief grief. We won a championship in Milwaukee. Now
- 16:16Speaker 5: he's out, Jaylen Brown won a championship in Boston. Now
- 16:20Speaker 5: he's out. Novis Lebron. So these are these aren't like
- 16:23Speaker 5: minimal moves. These are big move.
- 16:25Speaker 4: Do you think so this is this is a question.
- 16:28Speaker 4: Do you think it is the opportunity to go to
- 16:34Speaker 4: another place with the with the thought process of winning
- 16:40Speaker 4: another championship not no for any part anybody. Yeah, because
- 16:45Speaker 4: think about it when you start when you start talking
- 16:47Speaker 4: about winning championships.
- 16:48Speaker 2: It sounds good.
- 16:49Speaker 4: You want to at LA, but it's different to me.
- 16:53Speaker 4: If you won one, you won two in l A,
- 16:55Speaker 4: you won one in Cleveland, you want, you know, just
- 16:57Speaker 4: wherever you have that in your resume.
- 17:01Speaker 2: I think that's I think that's.
- 17:02Speaker 4: The that's the draw because I can't figure out, like,
- 17:06Speaker 4: because some of these guys are not necessarily these are
- 17:08Speaker 4: not top teams. They're not the top team that some
- 17:11Speaker 4: of the guys are going to. I don't think I
- 17:13Speaker 4: don't Yeah, I don't think any of them are like, yeah,
- 17:15Speaker 4: you know, so I'm going to a team that I'm
- 17:17Speaker 4: gonna be the guy on that may not take us
- 17:22Speaker 4: to a championship. They may not get me to a championship.
- 17:26Speaker 4: What am I going there for?
- 17:27Speaker 5: I think, like in the case of Gianni's, I think
- 17:30Speaker 5: he wanted to get out of Milwaukee, and I don't
- 17:33Speaker 5: know if that's lifestyle. You know, when we talk about
- 17:36Speaker 5: Mammy Heat, they haven't been that good for a little
- 17:38Speaker 5: bit now, but they do have a championship culture. They
- 17:41Speaker 5: won championships in the last ten fifteen years, so they
- 17:45Speaker 5: have a championship quote unquote culture.
- 17:47Speaker 2: So maybe that's what it is.
- 17:48Speaker 5: Jayleb Browny, he has an interesting story because he had
- 17:53Speaker 5: probably one of the best seasons. He was an All
- 17:55Speaker 5: NBA guy, He had one of the best seasons last year,
- 17:58Speaker 5: took a depleted team to the playoffs, and he he
- 18:02Speaker 5: was just arbitrarily traded by the Celtics. There's been a
- 18:06Speaker 5: lot of rumors like, well, maybe he's too smart for the.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Room, maybe he's this, maybe he's that.
- 18:10Speaker 5: Maybe, you know, there's been a lot of narrative spun
- 18:13Speaker 5: around him. As far as Lebron, I mean, you know, uh,
- 18:18Speaker 5: it's one of them cases with Lebron, like, man, do
- 18:20Speaker 5: you just do you ride off into the sunset? Do
- 18:23Speaker 5: you want to have kind of that one to your point?
- 18:25Speaker 5: Do you want to have another just one championship run
- 18:28Speaker 5: before you say hang it up? Or is it just
- 18:31Speaker 5: maybe a case you just have trouble letting go, Because
- 18:33Speaker 5: I mean, Lebron, does he have anything left to prove?
- 18:38Speaker 5: As much as you may like him or dislike him,
- 18:41Speaker 5: does he have anything to prove?
- 18:43Speaker 2: I don't think so. I think he's he's.
- 18:45Speaker 4: Gonna go down as one of the best players to
- 18:49Speaker 4: play in the NBA. Yeah, and durability and all those
- 18:54Speaker 4: kinds of things. He's gonna have that factor that, yeah,
- 18:57Speaker 4: you have to scoring, scoring all that championships, all the
- 19:04Speaker 4: records and stats and playoffs and this, and that he
- 19:06Speaker 4: could walk out into the sunset and be celebrated forever.
- 19:12Speaker 4: The worst thing that, my thing, is what you don't
- 19:17Speaker 4: always know when that body's gonna just shut down on you.
- 19:20Speaker 4: Oh yeah, you're out there and all of a sudden
- 19:23Speaker 4: in your head, you're like good, you know, and then
- 19:26Speaker 4: all of a sudden you realize, oh, you can't make
- 19:28Speaker 4: that play, and you're gonna downplay it first and before
- 19:31Speaker 4: you know what, this plays you can't make that you
- 19:33Speaker 4: used to could do easily, And now all of a
- 19:37Speaker 4: sudden you're stuck.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Because you're playing, like don't go out, Like no.
- 19:41Speaker 4: Don't go Why not go out on the top, And
- 19:44Speaker 4: that don't have to be a championship, that just has
- 19:47Speaker 4: to be usally Yeah, yeah, you physically right now.
- 19:52Speaker 2: Have been known.
- 19:55Speaker 4: Talked about as being the best, one of the best
- 19:58Speaker 4: players ever to play in the NBA. You could go
- 20:02Speaker 4: out on that without any average season. You don't have
- 20:08Speaker 4: to have an average.
- 20:08Speaker 5: So so let's say let's just hypothetically he goes somewhere else,
- 20:12Speaker 5: he goes to seventy six, he goes anywhere else. He
- 20:15Speaker 5: has a subpar season, he has just an average Lebron season.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Let's say, do you.
- 20:19Speaker 5: Think just him going from that many teams, do you
- 20:23Speaker 5: think that hurts his legacy?
- 20:24Speaker 2: I do? I do.
- 20:25Speaker 4: I think You're gonna if you keep jumping team the
- 20:28Speaker 4: team and you build that team up, whether you win
- 20:32Speaker 4: a championship or not, you build that team up, you
- 20:34Speaker 4: get all that credit, but all of a sudden, when
- 20:37Speaker 4: you get to a team and you don't build that
- 20:39Speaker 4: team up, it doesn't really move.
- 20:43Speaker 2: You.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Now become because can you imagine him on a team
- 20:46Speaker 4: that's not being successful and him doing all the things
- 20:50Speaker 4: that he does. Now, who's everybody ain't gonna like that?
- 20:54Speaker 5: Yeah, it's gonna be taugh because you know people already
- 20:57Speaker 5: have issues with Lebron. And again, those aren't the only
- 20:59Speaker 5: three big names I want to mention. Uh Job Moran,
- 21:03Speaker 5: he went from the Grizzlies to Portland. Paul George, he
- 21:07Speaker 5: went from seventy six ers to to to Boston in
- 21:12Speaker 5: that trade with Jaylen Brown. Julius Rando also got changed traded.
- 21:16Speaker 5: The biggest one though, that I was like shocked by,
- 21:21Speaker 5: was LaMelo Ball.
- 21:22Speaker 2: LaMelo Ball is a young player.
- 21:24Speaker 5: He played for Charlotte and they were like, they made
- 21:28Speaker 5: the playoffs this year. They sent they tend to be tending,
- 21:31Speaker 5: ascending in the right direction. And he gets traded to
- 21:36Speaker 5: I think it shocked everybody to Minnesota. And I just
- 21:39Speaker 5: don't know how him and the ant man are, Like,
- 21:41Speaker 5: I don't know how those two play together. Basically, you
- 21:44Speaker 5: got two ball doc line, I would say ball dominant
- 21:48Speaker 5: guards one one or two. I guess they could flip
- 21:51Speaker 5: flop either one. And I just don't know how that's
- 21:54Speaker 5: gonna work. It just don't seem like it's enough balls
- 21:57Speaker 5: around and and and the thing is is like when
- 21:59Speaker 5: you have and I'll ask you this, when you have
- 22:02Speaker 5: like just a and this is just general, but when
- 22:04Speaker 5: you have like a young superstar, when you got like
- 22:06Speaker 5: a young kid superstar, he's flamboyant, he's and I would say,
- 22:11Speaker 5: I don't know if Lamel Lamela Ball, if he plays basketball,
- 22:14Speaker 5: he just hoop, right, He just like he hoop very effectively.
- 22:18Speaker 5: But it looks like he hoops, like, what signs are
- 22:22Speaker 5: there when thanks, I guess from a back office perspective,
- 22:26Speaker 5: what signs are there to say, Hey, this kid, he
- 22:29Speaker 5: looks like he's all right, but we may wanted to
- 22:31Speaker 5: go to another direction. Now when everything seems from the
- 22:35Speaker 5: outside looking in, it seems to be like Dan, they're
- 22:37Speaker 5: coming up.
- 22:38Speaker 4: Well see, I'm thinking, okay, that the whole reasoning behind
- 22:43Speaker 4: that was. And I'll use a Viking uh scenario like
- 22:50Speaker 4: you bringing it like us bringing in herschel Walker.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Yeah, you you.
- 22:56Speaker 4: There's a there's a thought process that this is going
- 22:58Speaker 4: to be the the change, this is the this is
- 23:01Speaker 4: the final piece to us actually getting to the super
- 23:05Speaker 4: Bowl and winning it. I'm thinking this is the same
- 23:08Speaker 4: kind of the same kind of risk that you're taking,
- 23:12Speaker 4: and you're putting this on this particular player. And I
- 23:16Speaker 4: think I don't think that that that has been overly
- 23:20Speaker 4: successful in any in anywhere when you start talking about
- 23:26Speaker 4: letting players go and bringing in somebody, a single guy
- 23:30Speaker 4: and he's going to be the guy.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Now, think about it.
- 23:34Speaker 4: If they bring you I'm a quarterback and they bring
- 23:37Speaker 4: you in, and I'm thinking I'm doing okay, you know,
- 23:40Speaker 4: like I you know, nobody sit me down. Ain't nobody
- 23:43Speaker 4: really come at me. But all of a sudden, they
- 23:45Speaker 4: either draft you first round or they bring you in
- 23:48Speaker 4: from another team and give four or five players that
- 23:51Speaker 4: were playing. They're not gonna get four or five players
- 23:54Speaker 4: to somebody else and you not play. Yeah, and and
- 23:58Speaker 4: so to me, I think it's a hard it's a hard.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Thing to do and keep the unity of the team.
- 24:08Speaker 4: I think it's if you can do that, man, I
- 24:10Speaker 4: think it's a I think it's a huge, a huge asset.
- 24:15Speaker 4: But I don't know if anybody has ever done a
- 24:18Speaker 4: trade like that who have sent great players away and
- 24:22Speaker 4: ended up having a super successful season with whomever they
- 24:27Speaker 4: bring in.
- 24:28Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, it's it's it's one other things. I mean,
- 24:31Speaker 5: he averaged twenty points. Lamulla Ball averaged twenty points, four
- 24:36Speaker 5: point eight rebounds, and seven assist the game. So I'm
- 24:39Speaker 5: just I guess what I'm I'm just wondering what are
- 24:43Speaker 5: they seeing that says like, Okay, he can't grow, he
- 24:47Speaker 5: can't get better, so we might as well cut our losses.
- 24:49Speaker 2: Now.
- 24:50Speaker 5: When you take a team like that who has been
- 24:52Speaker 5: bad for a while, you take him to the playoffs.
- 24:54Speaker 5: You have a but basically a darn are all pro
- 24:58Speaker 5: season far statistics is can turn and it's just much
- 25:02Speaker 5: Maybe is it?
- 25:03Speaker 2: Is it that intangible? Is that leadership? Is it? You know?
- 25:07Speaker 2: What is it that say it's like.
- 25:09Speaker 5: Okay, well we're just going to get rid of this
- 25:10Speaker 5: young twenty something superstar and just let him go?
- 25:14Speaker 4: Well, you know, it's the same thing like what was
- 25:18Speaker 4: what when did you all sit down and have a
- 25:20Speaker 4: conversation and say we want to let six seven eight
- 25:23Speaker 4: guys go.
- 25:24Speaker 2: And bring in herschel Walker? Like what was you know,
- 25:28Speaker 2: Heschel Walker. I'll never let it go.
- 25:30Speaker 4: But but you know what I'm saying that that like
- 25:32Speaker 4: what is what motivates that conversation? Like what makes you?
- 25:37Speaker 4: And and how does does everybody agree to it?
- 25:41Speaker 2: Maybe?
- 25:42Speaker 5: I don't know, man, That's that's a hard that's a
- 25:44Speaker 5: good question. I'm sure there have to be some somebody
- 25:46Speaker 5: in the room saying I don't know about this one. Yes,
- 25:49Speaker 5: and thisbody ain't got no cloud.
- 25:51Speaker 4: And in this situation that you're talking about again, who
- 25:54Speaker 4: who was in the room saying let's do this? This
- 25:58Speaker 4: this makes perfectly good sense. I think, well, I think
- 26:01Speaker 4: we we come out on the winning in on.
- 26:03Speaker 2: This do you do you?
- 26:06Speaker 5: And then the final one is Kawhi Leonard. He goes
- 26:08Speaker 5: from the Clippers to back to Toronto, so we'll see
- 26:14Speaker 5: how that works out. He won a championship with Toronto
- 26:17Speaker 5: some years back, so we'll we'll see how this works out.
- 26:21Speaker 5: But you know, like I said, the NBA, they're definitely
- 26:24Speaker 5: trying to compete with the NFL when it comes to
- 26:26Speaker 5: off season with all these trades and and and you know,
- 26:29Speaker 5: drafts and all these sort of things like that, they're
- 26:31Speaker 5: trying to keep themselves in the news, which seems like
- 26:34Speaker 5: they're doing a pretty good job.
- 26:35Speaker 4: Do you think the money been that? Do you think
- 26:38Speaker 4: the money in the trades and and and and all
- 26:42Speaker 4: of those types of things that that take that's taking place. Now,
- 26:46Speaker 4: do you think for the player it's okay? Like it
- 26:50Speaker 4: doesn't bother them.
- 26:52Speaker 5: Like they're not they're not depend I mean, for example,
- 26:55Speaker 5: I like I said, as far as like if you
- 26:59Speaker 5: take a Gyannis and to to Kubo, if you take him,
- 27:02Speaker 5: he appears that he wanted to be out of there.
- 27:04Speaker 5: He done with that, so he wanted to go. But conversely,
- 27:08Speaker 5: if you take somebody like LaMelo Ball, who I thought
- 27:10Speaker 5: at least at thought, And I would say, maybe I'm
- 27:13Speaker 5: not the only person who thinks like this. He appeared
- 27:16Speaker 5: to be the face of that franchise, right I went
- 27:18Speaker 5: to a Charlotte game this past year. He appeared to
- 27:20Speaker 5: be like, Okay, we gotta get the guy. We're putting
- 27:23Speaker 5: our money on him. He's going to be like the
- 27:25Speaker 5: face that we have moving forward. And I would I
- 27:28Speaker 5: would imagine that he would feel some type of way.
- 27:31Speaker 5: And in addition, and you take somebody like John Moran
- 27:35Speaker 5: who had it all he was, he was that emerged.
- 27:39Speaker 5: He was definitely the face of the franchise. He was
- 27:42Speaker 5: an emerging like almost face of the league. And then
- 27:44Speaker 5: he gets in all this little silly trouble that he
- 27:46Speaker 5: constantly gets into. So maybe they didn't have a choice
- 27:50Speaker 5: but to send him out. And I'm sure there's an
- 27:52Speaker 5: understanding at least if he's mature enough to get it
- 27:54Speaker 5: that there's an understanding hoods portion like that. And I
- 27:56Speaker 5: did through all this messing up, so they was probably justified.
- 27:59Speaker 5: So I think it depends on your perspective and your
- 28:02Speaker 5: position you probably had prior to anything.
- 28:06Speaker 4: I don't know if that. I mean, I again, money's
- 28:08Speaker 4: always money. But I think when you're playing at that
- 28:11Speaker 4: level with those guys, I mean, yeah.
- 28:15Speaker 2: It don't make it. It really don't make any different
- 28:16Speaker 2: coming either way, you know what I mean.
- 28:18Speaker 4: And I would think I would think that if you're
- 28:24Speaker 4: in those kinds of situations.
- 28:26Speaker 2: And I can remember when I first heard that, like.
- 28:28Speaker 4: I I might be in the herschel Walker conversation. It
- 28:35Speaker 4: was the worst feeling, not even about him, but like that,
- 28:39Speaker 4: I'm you know, you're gonna you're gonna.
- 28:41Speaker 2: Trade me, You're gonna let me go, you know.
- 28:43Speaker 4: And now, was that prior to free agents free agency
- 28:47Speaker 4: or that was after free agency because you because it
- 28:50Speaker 4: was a portion of your career you played, really wasn't
- 28:52Speaker 4: no free agency?
- 28:53Speaker 2: Yes you couldn't.
- 28:54Speaker 4: Yeah, there was no free agency at that point in time,
- 28:57Speaker 4: So it was like you were more tied to the yeah, organization,
- 29:00Speaker 4: you had, you had, you had a contract, you were,
- 29:02Speaker 4: you were there, you know, and unless they wanted to
- 29:06Speaker 4: do something. So I would imagine it's kind of like
- 29:08Speaker 4: a different mind state maybe than players have today. Maybe
- 29:11Speaker 4: I would I would they understand, like I play for
- 29:13Speaker 4: this team, that team.
- 29:14Speaker 2: I don't think I think it's it's not I'm not
- 29:17Speaker 2: loyal to.
- 29:19Speaker 4: Anybody necessarily if if it's gonna get me what I want.
- 29:24Speaker 4: Some of that might be some for some players, that
- 29:26Speaker 4: might be money. Some players that might be a championship.
- 29:30Speaker 4: You know, you look at somebody like a Steph Curry.
- 29:32Speaker 4: He you know, he ain't gonna go nowhere just for
- 29:34Speaker 4: the money. Yep, that's good, you know he he he
- 29:38Speaker 4: wants to go somewhere where he wants to, where he
- 29:40Speaker 4: thinks he can win.
- 29:41Speaker 2: Yeah. And I doubt he ever leave Gold. I couldn't have.
- 29:45Speaker 2: I could not imagine. I would like to see him
- 29:47Speaker 2: just just finish on now. Yeah, I would too.
- 29:50Speaker 4: And and there was some conversation, what would you think
- 29:55Speaker 4: about Lebron going there? I think that changes the whole
- 30:00Speaker 4: dynamic of that whole team.
- 30:03Speaker 2: Yeah, And I just don't I mean, I just don't
- 30:06Speaker 2: like that.
- 30:06Speaker 4: Man.
- 30:07Speaker 5: It's just it's like one of those moves where it's like,
- 30:10Speaker 5: you know, they they've been competing against each other, whether
- 30:13Speaker 5: it's like when Lebron's in the East, they're competing for
- 30:16Speaker 5: championships against each other, they're competing for position. When Lebron
- 30:19Speaker 5: went to the West, a Western conference, that is, so
- 30:22Speaker 5: it's like, man, just stay rivals, like we don't like
- 30:25Speaker 5: everybody don't got to partner up, you.
- 30:26Speaker 2: Know what I mean.
- 30:27Speaker 5: I think that's like a I know it may be
- 30:29Speaker 5: sound cliche, but I like some some guys just being
- 30:32Speaker 5: rivals of one another.
- 30:34Speaker 2: You know what I mean.
- 30:35Speaker 4: Yeah, Like I can be your buddy in the off season,
- 30:39Speaker 4: but I don't want to play with you.
- 30:41Speaker 5: Yeah, it's like Patrick you in and like Michael Jordan
- 30:43Speaker 5: playing again. Come on, man, y'all say that for the
- 30:46Speaker 5: elect y'all can do that exactly, you know what I mean? Yeah,
- 30:50Speaker 5: they competing and and.
- 30:52Speaker 4: And I think I think they're gonna what they're gonna
- 30:55Speaker 4: do if they continue into that struck. Sure, I think
- 31:01Speaker 4: they're gonna lose the fan base, you know. And and
- 31:04Speaker 4: I think if anybody has a fan base, it is basketball.
- 31:09Speaker 4: I mean they they Basketball has kind of been teeter
- 31:12Speaker 4: and I think what happened It came back this year
- 31:15Speaker 4: and I think, uh, you know, Victor Wimammie Wimby. I
- 31:18Speaker 4: think he was a major part of that because he
- 31:20Speaker 4: has that old school mentality. You know, Jaylen Brust and
- 31:22Speaker 4: the boys in the New York they had that old
- 31:24Speaker 4: school mentality where we're going to war with each.
- 31:27Speaker 2: Other and against you. Yes, you know what I mean.
- 31:29Speaker 4: And I feel like that there's there seems to be
- 31:34Speaker 4: to me.
- 31:36Speaker 2: Just a new life in in in the NBA. I don't.
- 31:41Speaker 2: I don't feel that in the NFL. You don't. I don't.
- 31:46Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 31:46Speaker 5: Man, we gotta see when I mean, I think again,
- 31:50Speaker 5: when we could definitely talk about this, I know this
- 31:52Speaker 5: is something we touched on last week. I just think
- 31:56Speaker 5: stuff like and again, this is not, uh, I don't,
- 31:59Speaker 5: this is not when we're not attributing to him specifically.
- 32:03Speaker 5: But I think you know the story with you know,
- 32:05Speaker 5: Chris Johnson last week, that stuff hurts because people are
- 32:09Speaker 5: seeing like the ramifications, and now not only are we
- 32:13Speaker 5: seeing the ramifications, but we're seeing the direct correlation. You're
- 32:18Speaker 5: seeing sort of the research behind these things. And there
- 32:22Speaker 5: and and I think the NFL doesn't. It's one of
- 32:24Speaker 5: those things that where you have to address it in
- 32:26Speaker 5: a real way. Last week, you brought up CTE and
- 32:30Speaker 5: and als and how they are direct not tied to
- 32:33Speaker 5: one another, but they are directly tied to NFL players.
- 32:37Speaker 5: And we talked about soccer earlier and different things of
- 32:40Speaker 5: that nature. And I think them type of stories they
- 32:42Speaker 5: don't help. No, no, And and.
- 32:47Speaker 4: I'll say this, the NFL has I mean, they were
- 32:53Speaker 4: so late in even trying to even make a case
- 32:57Speaker 4: that we're going to even try.
- 32:58Speaker 2: To help you. Yea.
- 32:59Speaker 4: You know, there was so many guys. I saw some
- 33:03Speaker 4: of the older guys when I was in the league
- 33:06Speaker 4: and was young, and and you know, just running around
- 33:09Speaker 4: just meeting these guys, and and and now you know
- 33:13Speaker 4: some of those guys, some of them have passed, you know,
- 33:16Speaker 4: but you know some of them are struggling mentally.
- 33:21Speaker 2: Like like when did you when did you start?
- 33:25Speaker 4: When did you first realize that this type of contact.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Is a problem, you know? And and when were you
- 33:33Speaker 2: gonna tell us?
- 33:34Speaker 4: You're you're waiting until all of a sudden, this this
- 33:37Speaker 4: massive group of former players or players all of a
- 33:41Speaker 4: sudden are having memory issues. And now you want to say, oh, okay,
- 33:46Speaker 4: go get go get your tests. We'll pay for you
- 33:47Speaker 4: to go get your tests. What about telling us about
- 33:51Speaker 4: what the what the risk were and and and when
- 33:54Speaker 4: you had those head injuries and I won't call them injuries,
- 33:58Speaker 4: when you had what we called you get you can
- 34:00Speaker 4: get your bail rung. When you get your bail rung,
- 34:03Speaker 4: maybe you can't come back in two or three plays.
- 34:06Speaker 4: Maybe you don't even need to be back in the
- 34:07Speaker 4: game the rest of that game, no matter what it is.
- 34:11Speaker 5: And I know that's something they're trying to do a
- 34:13Speaker 5: better job of now and speaking of it, because it
- 34:18Speaker 5: made me think, like I think a lot of what
- 34:20Speaker 5: happened to like a lot of former football players, because
- 34:22Speaker 5: you always see like kind of the violence and different
- 34:25Speaker 5: things kind of post career, maybe like towards the end
- 34:28Speaker 5: of their career. I think a lot of that probably
- 34:30Speaker 5: could be explained because of that that you know that trauma,
- 34:33Speaker 5: and I know we talked earlier in one of the
- 34:34Speaker 5: things that I said is that should there be a
- 34:37Speaker 5: cap on NFL players? Should there be like okay, similar
- 34:41Speaker 5: to like but doing in college you only got ten
- 34:44Speaker 5: or twelve years to play and then after that you
- 34:46Speaker 5: maxed out and you have to you have to stop
- 34:48Speaker 5: playing at x amount X year. Do you think something
- 34:51Speaker 5: like that should be considered? I think I think so.
- 34:57Speaker 5: And but what I'll add to that is there needs
- 35:03Speaker 5: to be a check up. There needs to be a
- 35:07Speaker 5: yearly checkup for players to test is there any damage
- 35:13Speaker 5: to your memory already taking effect?
- 35:16Speaker 2: Something just that they're doing something like that.
- 35:19Speaker 4: I don't know if it's current players that are playing,
- 35:21Speaker 4: I don't. I don't know that I thought they were
- 35:23Speaker 4: doing some sort of cognitive it. But but I think
- 35:26Speaker 4: that if that's the case, then you're you're gonna know
- 35:30Speaker 4: because you might get there's a ton of players who've
- 35:32Speaker 4: got twelve years in and are okay right now. But
- 35:37Speaker 4: a guy like a Joey Browner, you know, who's a
- 35:43Speaker 4: huge physical specimen and was hitting people like crazy and
- 35:49Speaker 4: he's and he's gone now.
- 35:51Speaker 2: You know.
- 35:52Speaker 4: And and there's there's a number of players and a
- 35:55Speaker 4: number of situations where.
- 35:58Speaker 2: Guys have.
- 36:01Speaker 4: Find themselves in that situation. And I don't know if
- 36:05Speaker 4: there's what what is the results of the help that
- 36:09Speaker 4: you're getting, Like, where's the help coming from? Letting you
- 36:13Speaker 4: know that it is isn't isn't help you to me?
- 36:19Speaker 4: You gotta do something more. I don't know yet you
- 36:21Speaker 4: know what all that is? And that's that's you know,
- 36:25Speaker 4: that's unsorry.
- 36:26Speaker 5: You're saying, like maybe like if there was some sort
- 36:28Speaker 5: of tests, Uh yeah. NFL players must take cognitive tests
- 36:32Speaker 5: and brain evaluations during training camp known has baseline testing
- 36:36Speaker 5: and whenever they show signs of a concussion during a game. Uh,
- 36:40Speaker 5: it's before the season starts. Obviously, when they take a
- 36:46Speaker 5: player cannot return to the sport until their mental test
- 36:49Speaker 5: scores returned. But again that's not necessarily. I think what
- 36:52Speaker 5: you're talking about, what you're talking about is like a
- 36:54Speaker 5: more holistic test to say, hey, is your brain damage
- 36:58Speaker 5: enough where you need to stop playing at this right?
- 37:02Speaker 4: Because if you're just gonna test to see, you know, ada,
- 37:06Speaker 4: if you can play the next game, okay, well yeah
- 37:08Speaker 4: it might be okay today, But where is it?
- 37:12Speaker 5: I think these are more like concussion protocols. Yes, and
- 37:17Speaker 5: they said the cts found in nearly ninety two percent
- 37:20Speaker 5: of NFL players studied by Boston.
- 37:22Speaker 2: And I don't know a player.
- 37:26Speaker 4: I don't know a player who I have talked to,
- 37:29Speaker 4: who played when I played, who has not said to
- 37:34Speaker 4: me that they have memory issues to to whatever degree. Yeah, okay, functional,
- 37:41Speaker 4: some functional, some are you can tell that you know,
- 37:45Speaker 4: there's a there's a struggle there somewhere.
- 37:48Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 37:48Speaker 4: I don't I don't know if I know a player
- 37:51Speaker 4: who's okay, fine, like nothing, you know, and and then
- 37:57Speaker 4: you have the you also have that pride of players
- 38:02Speaker 4: who may be going through something, but they don't want
- 38:05Speaker 4: to say.
- 38:05Speaker 5: They don't want to say, man, I mean this is
- 38:08Speaker 5: a this is this is definitely a sensitive, touchy issue
- 38:10Speaker 5: because I just don't the thing is, you're not going
- 38:13Speaker 5: to eliminate head and brain trauma and just hard hits.
- 38:17Speaker 5: You're not you laminated at the game, right, So it's
- 38:20Speaker 5: just like, at what point do you I think you
- 38:23Speaker 5: can make it safer. I think they've done a good
- 38:25Speaker 5: job with like heads of football making sure that people
- 38:27Speaker 5: are tackling better. I mean I would often say like
- 38:31Speaker 5: maybe we need to and again, this is definitely not
- 38:34Speaker 5: gonna win me any points, but I think there needs
- 38:36Speaker 5: to be a consideration of possibly eliminating youth football. I
- 38:40Speaker 5: don't know if you need to take those hitstead early,
- 38:44Speaker 5: particularly when you're in development stage. And I think even
- 38:46Speaker 5: and if we're going to have you football, I think
- 38:49Speaker 5: there has to be a consideration of, you know, making
- 38:53Speaker 5: sure whoever the coaches are and I'm not saying they
- 38:55Speaker 5: have to be this or that, but if you are
- 38:57Speaker 5: going to coach, then you have to get a significant
- 39:00Speaker 5: amount of training to make sure that you are teaching
- 39:03Speaker 5: correct techniques. And maybe there has to be some sort
- 39:06Speaker 5: of Again, I hate saying this. I don't want to
- 39:09Speaker 5: say registry, but I think there maybe have to be
- 39:12Speaker 5: something that says, hey, like, you can't play your season
- 39:17Speaker 5: ten twelve games and then go play travel ball and
- 39:19Speaker 5: then go do this. I mean, I see kids now
- 39:21Speaker 5: it's ninety degrees they're out there playing travel ball, and
- 39:24Speaker 5: then in two months they're going to go play football
- 39:27Speaker 5: at their middle school or their little league. So I
- 39:30Speaker 5: think maybe there needs to be a cutoff on the
- 39:32Speaker 5: mount you play. There has to be something.
- 39:35Speaker 4: I'm gonna say this to anybody who's playing travel ball
- 39:41Speaker 4: and playing any other football anywhere else. For whatever you
- 39:48Speaker 4: think you are getting athletically or skill set based by
- 39:54Speaker 4: playing more football is not more is better? Yeah, and
- 40:00Speaker 4: you and you more is the worst adjective that you
- 40:05Speaker 4: could put with that, because it is it's just not.
- 40:11Speaker 4: You can teach a kid different like footwork. You can
- 40:15Speaker 4: teach you footwork without contact. You can teach them how
- 40:18Speaker 4: to frow without contact. There's a ton of things you
- 40:21Speaker 4: can teach him how to block, how to use your
- 40:23Speaker 4: hands to tackle, and how to use your hands to block.
- 40:25Speaker 4: You can do all that without contact. You don't have
- 40:28Speaker 4: to more football and I and I'll just be outright
- 40:34Speaker 4: like I hate travel football like I hate it.
- 40:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not a fan of it.
- 40:38Speaker 5: I know, like even Signetti coach at any Enda Whotia
- 40:42Speaker 5: who just won the collegiate championship. I know kind of
- 40:45Speaker 5: their methodology and they don't grind guys. They don't do
- 40:48Speaker 5: like a whole bunch of like practicing and hitting different things.
- 40:51Speaker 5: It's more like testing your cognitive ability, watching film, getting skills,
- 40:56Speaker 5: doing stuff like that. Like you're saying, So I just
- 40:58Speaker 5: I mean I think that again, not to pit it
- 41:00Speaker 5: on like you athletes or parents or whatever, but I
- 41:03Speaker 5: think when we talk about those, uh you know, those
- 41:06Speaker 5: cognitive issues, they're not starting once you get to the NFL. No,
- 41:10Speaker 5: it's not like you just like you, okay, you're waiting
- 41:13Speaker 5: to college and I need to worry about it.
- 41:15Speaker 2: It's not starting there. It's starting as soon as you
- 41:17Speaker 2: strap it up.
- 41:18Speaker 5: Because I could say, I know, I believe again, I
- 41:21Speaker 5: don't have any you know, this is imperial. I don't
- 41:23Speaker 5: have any empirical data. This is just my own conjecture.
- 41:26Speaker 5: Like I believe. You know, some guys that you know
- 41:29Speaker 5: play just little league through high school and now you
- 41:31Speaker 5: can kind of look at them and tell man, some
- 41:33Speaker 5: is yes, and.
- 41:35Speaker 2: There's no family history.
- 41:36Speaker 4: It's just something where you know, and you know those
- 41:38Speaker 4: guys were hitters and the way they we were taught
- 41:41Speaker 4: back then. So you know, again, I think it's something
- 41:45Speaker 4: we're going to have to address early and often. And
- 41:48Speaker 4: I don't know if there is a probably because I
- 41:51Speaker 4: mean even with CTE, they can't necessarily diagnose that until
- 41:55Speaker 4: really after your that you passed, right, they can't exactly
- 42:00Speaker 4: now once once you pass the way that I understand it,
- 42:03Speaker 4: after you pass, then they can actually then they know
- 42:07Speaker 4: they know for sure, they know all the symptoms. You
- 42:11Speaker 4: can't really tell you. Yeah, but they can't they because
- 42:13Speaker 4: it could be anything else. It could be anything.
- 42:16Speaker 5: But and then when you add als to that, when
- 42:18Speaker 5: you're at a l US too, you know it is
- 42:21Speaker 5: high in football players and it's high in military personnel.
- 42:25Speaker 5: They can't necessarily tell you to call. So it's just
- 42:27Speaker 5: like one of them things.
- 42:28Speaker 4: Where again, we love football, we want to play it,
- 42:32Speaker 4: but maybe we need to think about kind of when
- 42:35Speaker 4: we do it, right.
- 42:36Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 42:37Speaker 4: Yeah, you know I would I would love a couple,
- 42:40Speaker 4: a couple like I'd love us to get out of
- 42:44Speaker 4: the five six seven, you know, I'd love us to
- 42:47Speaker 4: get out of that, even though that's my job.
- 42:50Speaker 2: I'd like us to get out of that. And and
- 42:53Speaker 2: and then.
- 42:53Speaker 4: Just do you know, if you at best two seasons
- 42:58Speaker 4: two seasons maybe of youth football and then go to
- 43:01Speaker 4: and then go to middle school.
- 43:03Speaker 2: And and I think and as old as they.
- 43:05Speaker 4: As the older, the better of the last two seasons
- 43:10Speaker 4: or the first two seasons of football I think would
- 43:12Speaker 4: be great.
- 43:13Speaker 2: So maybe start fourth and fifth grade, Yes, if.
- 43:15Speaker 4: You could do fourth and fifth grade or something like that.
- 43:17Speaker 4: And man, do flag for the other yes, and do
- 43:19Speaker 4: flag for the other one. And everybody knows the flag is.
- 43:22Speaker 4: You know, kids love to run around and pull a
- 43:23Speaker 4: flag and all that kind of stuff. That so let's
- 43:26Speaker 4: let's take advantage of that as as as best we
- 43:31Speaker 4: can and allow kids to get used to being out
- 43:36Speaker 4: running and all that kind of stuff. And then let's
- 43:39Speaker 4: put them in the situation to where at least they're
- 43:42Speaker 4: just a tad bit older and and I don't want
- 43:45Speaker 4: to say mature, but at least they have a better
- 43:48Speaker 4: understanding of the game. But but you know what, and
- 43:52Speaker 4: and and this is the This is the sad thing
- 43:54Speaker 4: about it because what we just said and our timeline,
- 43:59Speaker 4: people will, man, that's crazy, you know, and and yes
- 44:06Speaker 4: it is crazy, but it'll take something crazy in order
- 44:10Speaker 4: to fix something that's that bad.
- 44:12Speaker 5: But but I think people don't want to come to
- 44:13Speaker 5: reality too, because what you're not gonna tell me. You're
- 44:16Speaker 5: not gonna tell me the accumulations of hits. If you've
- 44:19Speaker 5: been playing football since you're six years old, and then
- 44:22Speaker 5: you play, and then you God bless you, you play
- 44:25Speaker 5: till your thirty you make the NFL, you're not gonna
- 44:28Speaker 5: tell me twenty five years of accumulations of hits.
- 44:32Speaker 2: And that's saying And think about it.
- 44:34Speaker 5: If you play, if you're an offensive linement, that's hitting
- 44:36Speaker 5: every play, play, defensive linement, every play.
- 44:40Speaker 2: Linebacker you're hitting you know what I'm saying.
- 44:42Speaker 4: Running back, you're getting hit every single placially in the
- 44:46Speaker 4: U level. Yeah, sure, there's only so many positions that
- 44:49Speaker 4: you're not actually getting like. And the thing is, when
- 44:51Speaker 4: we talk about football, hockey, rugby, now, these aren't these
- 44:55Speaker 4: are collision sports. It's not contact sports. So the accumulation
- 44:59Speaker 4: of hits add up over time, and for every cushion
- 45:02Speaker 4: concussion that you diagnosed with. You probably got five other
- 45:05Speaker 4: ones that you didn't that you really didn't realize was
- 45:08Speaker 4: a mile.
- 45:09Speaker 5: Like you said, when them times when you get get
- 45:11Speaker 5: up and you see the stars a concussion, But yes,
- 45:14Speaker 5: you got one.
- 45:15Speaker 4: If you're if you pick a kid up, he's laying
- 45:18Speaker 4: there on the turf and you look at.
- 45:20Speaker 2: Him and he's just laying there.
- 45:24Speaker 4: You pick him up, and he's kind of walking side
- 45:27Speaker 4: to side, and you take him to the bench, and
- 45:31Speaker 4: if you put him in two three plays later.
- 45:36Speaker 2: You have.
- 45:37Speaker 4: What you have done is you are helping this major
- 45:44Speaker 4: issue perpetuate. Yes, I and I think to me, and
- 45:49Speaker 4: you don't And I want to make sure that you
- 45:50Speaker 4: know it.
- 45:51Speaker 2: So you won't do you don't don't.
- 45:53Speaker 5: Yeah, And I think to go along with that, I
- 45:57Speaker 5: think the ultimate problem that I've always that. I say
- 46:00Speaker 5: I've always that, particularly when I started to coach football
- 46:03Speaker 5: and I got and I had a unique opportunity because
- 46:05Speaker 5: I had to I got the luxury of coaching at
- 46:08Speaker 5: all levels. I've come from little league to college. I
- 46:10Speaker 5: didn't coach pro, but I coached from little league, youth
- 46:13Speaker 5: sports to college sports. And the thing is, I think
- 46:15Speaker 5: the problem with football ultimately, is that it's just too
- 46:18Speaker 5: much based on winning, right, I think that you know,
- 46:21Speaker 5: and again I understand that because you only get so
- 46:24Speaker 5: many finite games within that season.
- 46:25Speaker 2: It's not like basketball baseball.
- 46:27Speaker 5: But when you take sports like basketball, baseball, soccer, because
- 46:31Speaker 5: you get to play so many games and this is
- 46:33Speaker 5: just playing within your season, there's a lot of time
- 46:36Speaker 5: to develop and what counts is winning for your particular
- 46:39Speaker 5: athlete is different, you know what I mean? With football,
- 46:42Speaker 5: you don't get that opportunity to have development. So I
- 46:45Speaker 5: would love to see, like I said, in addition to
- 46:48Speaker 5: maybe a starting contact football just a tad later.
- 46:51Speaker 2: And I ain't talking about much, but just a tad later.
- 46:54Speaker 4: Well, you're talking about having a kid that's in fourth
- 46:57Speaker 4: grade in eighth grade, So fourth through eighth grade, that
- 47:00Speaker 4: should all be predicated on development. Winning should be secondary.
- 47:04Speaker 4: And I think for that to happen, we're gonna have
- 47:06Speaker 4: to have a cultural change where where we talk about
- 47:10Speaker 4: from fourth grade to eighth grade, those are strictly developmental years.
- 47:14Speaker 4: We ought to be teaching during that time and not
- 47:17Speaker 4: necessarily the focus is always purely on winning.
- 47:21Speaker 2: Is that also with coaches on the field, I'm talking coaches.
- 47:24Speaker 5: That's what I'm talking about. It's all my coaches. I'm
- 47:26Speaker 5: talking to my parents. I'm talking we understand that, hey,
- 47:29Speaker 5: you know, this group may not win a championship every year,
- 47:34Speaker 5: but we're gonna make sure that they understand how to tackle.
- 47:36Speaker 5: We understand that they understand how to take care of
- 47:39Speaker 5: their bodies. I'm gonna understan We're gonna make sure they
- 47:41Speaker 5: understand the game of football, and just when it's not
- 47:43Speaker 5: out there calling random plays, right, We're gonna make sure
- 47:45Speaker 5: that there's a there's a high level of understanding within
- 47:48Speaker 5: those developmental years. So when they go to you know,
- 47:52Speaker 5: high school, you know, like I said, they know how
- 47:54Speaker 5: to take care of themselves.
- 47:55Speaker 4: They understand the games, they understand what to do and
- 47:57Speaker 4: what not to do. I'm gonna give I'm gonna, I'm
- 47:59Speaker 4: gonna get of this to you and say to you
- 48:03Speaker 4: that you know, this could maybe be something that could
- 48:07Speaker 4: that that must be done right, one of those kinds
- 48:11Speaker 4: of things that well, I'm gonna, I'm gonna.
- 48:13Speaker 2: I'm gonna. I got something new.
- 48:14Speaker 4: I got something new, And it came to me as
- 48:17Speaker 4: you as you were talking.
- 48:20Speaker 2: I think that.
- 48:24Speaker 4: Before every season, I think that what you need to
- 48:29Speaker 4: have is you need to have a medical doctor, a
- 48:33Speaker 4: sports doctor to sit down have a conversation with parents
- 48:41Speaker 4: with coaches. Kids don't necessarily have to be there and
- 48:47Speaker 4: needs to explain to you because you know, you may
- 48:50Speaker 4: not hear me.
- 48:51Speaker 2: You may not you may not want to listen to me.
- 48:53Speaker 4: You may think like, oh, he he trying to kill football, Okay,
- 48:58Speaker 4: hollis he he doing it for whatever?
- 49:01Speaker 2: You know.
- 49:03Speaker 4: I think that we need to make sure that parents
- 49:07Speaker 4: understand what the actual risk is. And I'm not asking
- 49:11Speaker 4: I'm not saying to give them the risk to not
- 49:14Speaker 4: have the kid play, but also understand what to look for, Yes,
- 49:20Speaker 4: what kind of symptoms when he gets home, you know,
- 49:24Speaker 4: check check him out, and if there's anything that you
- 49:26Speaker 4: can do that is off the field to make sure
- 49:30Speaker 4: he's okay, What should he be doing after the games?
- 49:35Speaker 4: I mean, there could be a whole lot of different
- 49:37Speaker 4: things that I think they could ask and get an
- 49:42Speaker 4: answer to and put our kids in a in a
- 49:46Speaker 4: in a safer spot, because as long as they're in
- 49:49Speaker 4: the hands of us, we're just trying to we're just
- 49:53Speaker 4: trying to play, you know, and and right wrong and
- 49:56Speaker 4: any different that's just that's just the reality of it.
- 49:58Speaker 4: We want to play, we want to and everything else
- 50:02Speaker 4: is second secondary and that can't be.
- 50:05Speaker 5: That can't I just I don't know, I don't think
- 50:08Speaker 5: it can be anymore. Like we have to figure out
- 50:11Speaker 5: something different. And you know, like I said, I don't
- 50:13Speaker 5: think that's necessarily you know, a bad thing.
- 50:17Speaker 2: I know.
- 50:17Speaker 5: We talked about the Samari Role. He's a former NFL
- 50:20Speaker 5: football player. He's like a neurologist and a medical doctor
- 50:23Speaker 5: and he and he recently was hired by the Players
- 50:27Speaker 5: Association to do something similar to what you're saying, and
- 50:31Speaker 5: we and we discussed whether that's whether that's what will
- 50:36Speaker 5: that be effective even on that level as far as
- 50:39Speaker 5: having you know, he's an NFL Players Association, as a pointed,
- 50:44Speaker 5: former NFL safety and role scholar, doctor Samrii role has
- 50:48Speaker 5: a strategic advisor role centered on players health, bring cognition,
- 50:53Speaker 5: and preventative care. So it's something you're talking about something
- 50:56Speaker 5: like that maybe at all levels.
- 50:58Speaker 4: Yes, I think I think you have to have that
- 51:01Speaker 4: and you have to have opportunities for some of these
- 51:05Speaker 4: younger kids to get checked out because they could already
- 51:09Speaker 4: be in a bad spot and you don't know, you know,
- 51:14Speaker 4: I don't. I don't know, man, I just think that
- 51:17Speaker 4: I just think that we're not doing We're not doing
- 51:21Speaker 4: enough for young kids who are playing football. I just
- 51:26Speaker 4: don't think and I and I and I and I
- 51:28Speaker 4: would I think that there's a place for somebody to
- 51:34Speaker 4: call the attention to to sit down and say, Okay,
- 51:39Speaker 4: let's talk about this and see what are some of
- 51:42Speaker 4: the changes that we can make into youth football, in
- 51:46Speaker 4: the middle school, football in the high school. Because just
- 51:48Speaker 4: to be safe, and again to.
- 51:50Speaker 5: Your point, man, I know you guys NFL players, y'all
- 51:53Speaker 5: going to get all the attention when it comes to
- 51:55Speaker 5: these difference you know, new route uh like diseases and
- 51:59Speaker 5: different things that nature.
- 52:00Speaker 2: But I would imagine how.
- 52:02Speaker 5: Many college football players right now, how many high school
- 52:04Speaker 5: football players are like silently, I wouldn't even say solid,
- 52:07Speaker 5: just don't even like unaware that they have some sort
- 52:11Speaker 5: of issue cognitively because of the amount of hits that
- 52:14Speaker 5: they've teen.
- 52:14Speaker 4: How many times would you that you got hit, got
- 52:20Speaker 4: dizzy and all that kind of stuff And now when
- 52:23Speaker 4: you look back, yes, I'm telling you, I could probably
- 52:26Speaker 4: recall about ten times.
- 52:28Speaker 5: I know what I know. We played Saint Alvin's high
- 52:30Speaker 5: school here lately. Jason Rader, he played for Marshall, Georgia
- 52:33Speaker 5: and he even don't play for the NFL for a while.
- 52:35Speaker 5: I know he hit me like once I was out
- 52:37Speaker 5: of it.
- 52:37Speaker 2: I was out, Yea.
- 52:38Speaker 5: I played the whole game like now that I think
- 52:39Speaker 5: back on it, I didn't realize what it was at
- 52:42Speaker 5: the time, but I remember like two plays from that game.
- 52:45Speaker 5: And I can remember other times in college where you know,
- 52:47Speaker 5: you just took that hits. And I'm saying the way
- 52:49Speaker 5: we practiced all that back and again they've corrected a
- 52:52Speaker 5: bunch of stuff. So I don't want to say it
- 52:54Speaker 5: and say like there's not been no corrections, but I
- 52:56Speaker 5: think to your point, you know, in order for the
- 52:59Speaker 5: game to us to keep playing it, we gotta start
- 53:02Speaker 5: to maybe consider some other stuff. And I think to me,
- 53:05Speaker 5: to me, I think that we need to start playing later,
- 53:08Speaker 5: and I think we need to focus on development for
- 53:10Speaker 5: those prime years and and and then we can move
- 53:14Speaker 5: on to more competitive And I think, and I think,
- 53:17Speaker 5: if if the WV s a c.
- 53:22Speaker 4: If anybody who's listening today just happened to be listening
- 53:26Speaker 4: to us today, or you know somebody that's there. I
- 53:30Speaker 4: would highly recommend that we create they create some kind
- 53:37Speaker 4: of system, some kind of structure to where players get
- 53:43Speaker 4: tested prior to their next season coming up, just so.
- 53:50Speaker 2: They're okay.
- 53:51Speaker 4: We we already know that they're okay, because at this point,
- 53:56Speaker 4: nobody's gonna know.
- 53:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:58Speaker 4: You know, with my memory, I can forget something and
- 54:02Speaker 4: if somebody doesn't know, they just think, oh, he just
- 54:05Speaker 4: forgot it.
- 54:07Speaker 2: I know that, No, I didn't just forget it.
- 54:10Speaker 4: It's my memory, and and and and there's a difference
- 54:13Speaker 4: in that compared to you know, just you take a
- 54:20Speaker 4: kid that's let's say, second year in high school, and
- 54:25Speaker 4: he's been playing and maybe he's had some big hits,
- 54:30Speaker 4: and we don't know what those big hits are doing.
- 54:35Speaker 2: Yes we we we.
- 54:36Speaker 4: Don't know, and and and who's he's never gonna get
- 54:40Speaker 4: tested if he doesn't, you know, there's no because he's good.
- 54:43Speaker 4: He's already good, he's up, so he's not gonna get tested.
- 54:46Speaker 4: I just think that somewhere there has to be some
- 54:48Speaker 4: tests to be included into whatever the physical is.
- 54:52Speaker 2: We need that as more important than anything.
- 54:57Speaker 5: I mean, I would agree with you on that, like it,
- 55:00Speaker 5: something has to be you know, I think in order
- 55:02Speaker 5: for us to like keep football, we're gonna have to
- 55:05Speaker 5: change something.
- 55:05Speaker 4: We could be the first in West Virginia to start
- 55:10Speaker 4: looking into it. Man, I just think we just have to.
- 55:13Speaker 4: But ladies and gentlemen, we gotta get out of here.
- 55:15Speaker 4: We appreciate you listening, and we will be back again
- 55:17Speaker 4: next week.
