- 0:00Hello, and welcome to the Becker's Healthcare podcast.
- 0:02My name is Chanel Banger. Today, I have
- 0:04the pleasure of speaking with doctor Sarah Matt,
- 0:06a brilliant physician leader, entrepreneur,
- 0:09author, and a whole lot more, who joins
- 0:11the podcast today to share insights in our
- 0:13background,
- 0:14turn cheese keeping in, and a bit more.
- 0:16Doctor Matt, thank you so much for joining
- 0:17me today.
- 0:18Absolutely. It's always been fun to be on
- 0:19the Beggars podcast. Perfect. Well, to get us
- 0:22started out, for listeners who may not know
- 0:24who you are yet, could you please introduce
- 0:25yourself and tell us a bit about your
- 0:27background?
- 0:28Of course. So I'm doctor Sarah Matt. I
- 0:30like to think I'm a recovering surgeon. So
- 0:32I started off a 100% clinical and then
- 0:34moved into the tech sector early in my
- 0:36career. So I have been in leadership roles
- 0:38at lots of different startups, everything from ESO,
- 0:41which exited to Vista, to
- 0:43Savato, which most recently I was a chief
- 0:45strategy officer focused on remote robotic surgery. But
- 0:48I also spent a lot of time at
- 0:49NextGen Healthcare focused on critical access and patient
- 0:51engagement. And then I was at Oracle, both
- 0:54building out the OCI business for health care
- 0:56and life sciences and then helping with the
- 0:58Cerner acquisition, which was definitely a huge part
- 1:00of the excitement of health care a couple
- 1:02years ago. So these days, I do a
- 1:05lot of speaking, a lot of consulting.
- 1:07My book, the borderless health care revolution, came
- 1:09out in December as a national bestseller. And
- 1:11so I do a lot of work in
- 1:13the access space, not just for the government
- 1:15programs, but with how health care organizations
- 1:18and tech companies can include access as a
- 1:21key differentiator in their practices.
- 1:23Love it. Thank you so much for that
- 1:25introduction. And now as somebody with their hands
- 1:27in so many different pots, I'm curious to
- 1:29know what health care trends are you currently
- 1:31watching either in digital health, the government space,
- 1:34or just health care overall?
- 1:36So it's '26.
- 1:38The conference season has been in full swing.
- 1:41Everything from ACHE to HIMSS to Vibe, and
- 1:44now GTC is in full blast. And everything
- 1:47I'm seeing is porting towards
- 1:49not just AI, but are we gonna actually
- 1:52make it work? And I think that the
- 1:54biggest trend I'm seeing is
- 1:56AI governance, what it means for clinical executives,
- 2:00but also what it means for health tech
- 2:02companies that are in the space and trying
- 2:05to not just push
- 2:06implementation of their technology,
- 2:08but true implementation into the entire programmatic area
- 2:12of the health care ecosystem.
- 2:14So that means,
- 2:15hey. Once we implement, it's not just
- 2:18SLAs around uptime, it's SLAs around outcomes.
- 2:22Got it. Got it. And
- 2:24now looking forward, I am curious to know
- 2:26what are you most focused on and excited
- 2:28about going into the next part of 2026?
- 2:31And then looking back at last year, the
- 2:33last six to eighteen months or so, can
- 2:35you talk about something that you've accomplished that
- 2:37you're proud of?
- 2:38Well, first, I'll start with what I'm proud
- 2:40of. I'd say that
- 2:42bringing the health
- 2:44care access message to the masses in The
- 2:46United States has been a really big push
- 2:48for me. The borderless health care revolution really
- 2:50focuses on the five pillars of access, which
- 2:53I define as geography, financial, cultural, digital, and
- 2:57trust and knowledge. And I think that that's
- 2:58really resonating with both tech companies and health
- 3:01delivery systems
- 3:02because everyone, you, me, anyone listening to this
- 3:06podcast is having a difficult time with their
- 3:08own health care access. And so what I'd
- 3:10say is that people are now recognizing that
- 3:12it's everywhere, it's not just them, and it's
- 3:14not just specific populations. It's
- 3:16one of those things everyone can talk about.
- 3:19When it comes to what I'm excited about
- 3:21for the next six to twelve months,
- 3:24I'd say that it's really seen
- 3:26how the technology sector improves
- 3:29its ability to communicate
- 3:31with clinicians
- 3:33and build that trust.
- 3:34So we all know that the tech is
- 3:36the easy part when it comes to the
- 3:38new advances in innovation,
- 3:40and, ultimately,
- 3:41that's gonna keep going fast and furious. We
- 3:43can't stop that one.
- 3:45When it comes to actually adopting it, bringing
- 3:48it into workflows, and helping delivery systems
- 3:52actually improve outcomes,
- 3:54that's the tricky part. No matter how amazing
- 3:56your algo is, no matter how amazing your
- 3:58therapeutic, no matter how amazing your digital tool,
- 4:01ultimately,
- 4:03getting that clinical backing
- 4:05and getting real folks that are at the
- 4:08front lines utilizing your systems
- 4:10and bringing that value to patients is the
- 4:13hard part. And so, again, seeing huge advancements
- 4:17in tech, I'm excited to see how we're
- 4:19now making, hopefully,
- 4:21new advancements in that adoption and trust.
- 4:24Absolutely. You have a lot of things going
- 4:26on in health care right now. And now
- 4:29in the short conversation, I could tell that
- 4:30you're a very driven and impactful leader.
- 4:33With that, I'm curious, what advice would you
- 4:35give to other evolving leaders looking to have
- 4:38that same impact and drive in their careers
- 4:40as you have?
- 4:41So if you've been under a rock,
- 4:44then maybe you wouldn't understand this, but
- 4:46you have to evolve. And so here in
- 4:49'26 I mean, right now, we're talking today
- 4:51in March. It's been three months. And just
- 4:53in the last three months, not only has
- 4:55the market in health care and life sciences
- 4:57grown exponentially,
- 4:59what the technology has,
- 5:00the implications, the trends,
- 5:03everything's changing at such an astronomical rate that
- 5:06we can't,
- 5:07I'd say, rely on how we learned in
- 5:09the past. So what I'd say for any
- 5:12evolving leader, whether you're new
- 5:14in health care and tech or whether you've
- 5:16been in this ecosystem for decades,
- 5:19it's time to up your game. It's time
- 5:21to start learning more and more. So not
- 5:24only can you stay up with the times,
- 5:25but you can be at the bleeding edge
- 5:27and start pushing it in the right direction.
- 5:29Excellent advice. Well, doctor Matt, I wanna thank
- 5:31you for your time today. But before I
- 5:33let you go, is there anything else that
- 5:34listeners should know?
- 5:36What I'd say is that if you've resonated
- 5:38with some of the messages I've said today,
- 5:40I'd love to see you. Hit me up
- 5:41on doctor ceramat dot com. My primary platform
- 5:44is LinkedIn, and I work with
- 5:46small tech companies, delivery systems, etcetera, every day
- 5:50solving these big problems. So would be excited
- 5:52to chat.
- 5:53Perfect. Well, that's a great spot to end
- 5:55on. Doctor. Brown, I wanna thank you once
- 5:56again for your time today and for sharing
- 5:57your insights on the Becker's Healthcare podcast. Thank
- 5:59you so much. Thanks, Janelle.
